3. Using Group Messaging to Facilitate Peer Support among Early Doctoral Students: A Thematic Analysis of One Cohort's Text Messages

Abstract

Students face multiple stressors while earning their doctorates. Since peer support is a common recommendation for easing this stress, we realized graduate students, faculty, and academic program administrators might have interest in how our cohort used group messaging to facilitate peer support early in our studies. We conducted a thematic analysis examining how group messaging helped new doctoral students in a hybrid program maintain ongoing engagement with course content and build interpersonal relationships. McClusky's Theory of Margin provided a theoretical framework for this project. Results of thematic analysis emphasize that students utilized this communication medium to reach out to peers for support and to form interpersonal relationships with peers at a distance.

10. Learning to Listen: Collaborative Approaches to Choral Musicking

Abstract

Choral ensembles often operate as hierarchical institutions where the conductor maintains a position of control over the musical, educational, and social aspects of singing with little or no input from singers. This dissertation reconceptualizes the choral experience as a dialogical process where conventional boundaries between conductor and singers blur. This study was conducted online with a vocal ensemble of ten experienced adult avocational singers and asks how a collaborative spirit may transform the ensemble, individual singers, and the conductor. Using a critical participatory action research approach, we engaged in dialogue and group problem solving as we created collective and individual musical projects over the course of ten rehearsals. The research design emphasized collective reflection and democratic decision making. This research journey is presented through a collection of multimodal data fragments such as musical recordings, practitioner reflections and collated singer reflections, rehearsal transcriptions and narratives, photographs, and poetry. Informed by decolonizing and post-qualitative methodologies, this dissertation highlights the ethical dilemmas, rewards, and uncertainties of both collaborative research and learner-centered approaches to education. In investigating how singers might increase their influence within the ensemble setting, we discovered that singers talking back to the conductor set in motion conditions for a choral paradigm that I describe as "back talk choral pedagogy." This pedagogical orientation draws on critical and relational perspectives and is characterized by four interconnected commitments: (a) relational accountability; (b) mutual recognition of knowledge; (c) cultivation of a public square; and (d) responsiveness to input. Singer back talk manifested itself in myriad ways, including the reporting of information or observations, sharing opinions and suggestions, directly contesting the conductor, storytelling, and silence. Singer back talk produced noticeable fruits--a culture of shared vulnerability and trust, unique singer contributions, role fluidity between conductor and singers, and choral communion--which positively impacted the learning environment. This inquiry suggests that by centering relational and ethical aspects of musical collaboration, "back talk choral pedagogy" has the potential to build flourishing, dynamic musical spaces, increase singer ownership, and challenge conductors to expand their teaching practice. 16. A Case Study of Eastern Region Arkansas PROMISE Participants and Their Expectations for the Future

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop an in-depth understanding of how Eastern Arkansas youth with disabilities and their parents describe their expectations for the future, after participating in the Arkansas PROMISE program. The study sought an understanding of how participants viewed themselves and their expectations for the future, for employment, for participation in higher education, for independent living, and for future financial support. The research used a case study approach, interviewing five students and five parent participants. Participants were asked a series of questions to get an understanding of their experiences, their expectations for the future, and their understanding of the program's impact on their lives. Thematic analysis of the interviews, case management records, and other major documents, yielded five major findings that addressed the central research question guiding this study, which is how did Arkansas PROMISE participants in Eastern Arkansas describe their expectations for the future? Participants had an expectation of success for the future, especially as it relates to employment, while expectations for higher education, independent living and future financial support were low or mixed. Overall, participants viewed the Arkansas PROMISE program as having had an impact on their lives. The findings suggested Arkansas PROMISE supported the development of self-determination in participants, through its use of learning through experience and interaction with the world. Findings suggested the multiple components offered in Arkansas PROMISE, along with the coordination of services, supported the development of an expectancy for success, especially as it relates to employment. The findings also suggested participation in early employment opportunities for the Eastern Arkansas participants impacted their expectations in employment. Sustained employment impacted participants' expectations for independent living and future financial success. Findings suggested adult influences supported the development, or nondevelopment, of expectations for success in education, independent living, and future financial support. Further study on the impact of adult mentoring or coaching, and the use of integrated resource teams in the provision of transition supports for students and youth with disabilities, was also suggested. Abstract

Bio‐logging has revealed much about high‐latitude seabird migratory strategies, but migratory behaviour in tropical species may differ, with implications for understanding nutrient deposition. Here we use combined light‐level and saltwater immersion loggers to study the year‐round movement behaviour of adult red‐footed boobies Sula sula rubripes from the Chagos Archipelago, tropical Indian Ocean, to assess migratory movements and estimate nutrient deposition rates based on the number of days they spent ashore. Light levels suggest that red‐footed boobies are resident in the Chagos Archipelago year‐round, although there are large latitudinal errors this close to the equator. Immersion data also indicate residency with tracked birds returning to land every one or two days. Spending an average of 79.86 ± 2.80 days and 280.84 ± 2.64 nights per year on land allows us to estimate that the 21 670 pairs of red‐footed boobies deposit 37.34 ± 0.56 tonnes year−1 of guano‐derived nitrogen throughout the archipelago. Our findings have implications for tropical seabird conservation and phylogenetics, as well as for assessing the impact of seabird nutrients on coral reef ecosystems.

Abstract

Urban environments provide opportunities for some species but are inhospitable for others. However, those which thrive can be found at higher densities in human‐dominated landscapes than in more rural habitats. This highlights the importance of understanding species responses to human environments. It is not only important for the conservation of urban wildlife but also may provide fundamental insights into human‐wildlife coexistence globally.Here, we use citizen science data to predict the habitat suitability of Greater London for the West European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), the European badger (Meles meles) and the Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).Results indicate that the four target species prefer different urban habitats, indicating different levels of urbanisation potential. Foxes and grey squirrels are able to thrive in inner urban areas, with the highest values of habitat suitability for these species found in central London, whereas for hedgehogs and badgers, the highest habitat suitability occurs in suburban and more rural habitats in outer London, respectively.These results highlight a gradient in urban tolerance, from squirrels and foxes to hedgehogs and badgers. Abstract

Recent analyses have reported catastrophic global declines in vertebrate populations.sup.1,2. However, the distillation of many trends into a global mean index obscures the variation that can inform conservation measures and can be sensitive to analytical decisions. For example, previous analyses have estimated a mean vertebrate decline of more than 50% since 1970 (Living Planet Index.sup.2). Here we show, however, that this estimate is driven by less than 3% of vertebrate populations; if these extremely declining populations are excluded, the global trend switches to an increase. The sensitivity of global mean trends to outliers suggests that more informative indices are needed. We propose an alternative approach, which identifies clusters of extreme decline (or increase) that differ statistically from the majority of population trends. We show that, of taxonomic-geographic systems in the Living Planet Index, 16 systems contain clusters of extreme decline (comprising around 1% of populations; these extreme declines occur disproportionately in larger animals) and 7 contain extreme increases (around 0.4% of populations). The remaining 98.6% of populations across all systems showed no mean global trend. However, when analysed separately, three systems were declining strongly with high certainty (all in the Indo-Pacific region) and seven were declining strongly but with less certainty (mostly reptile and amphibian groups). Accounting for extreme clusters fundamentally alters the interpretation of global vertebrate trends and should be used to help to prioritize conservation efforts. Abstract

The role of a professional and creative writing degree is to provide resources, structured workshops, professional interactions--and the potential for creative risk. Opportunities for risk, within the structured environment of the university, challenge the individual's perspectives and judgements, as well as their ability to analyse and to reflect on their writing and creative practices. From this starting point the authors, both writing industry practitioners and academics, have developed experiential projects with the aim of transforming their teaching practice from a model of narrative hierarchies of knowledge to learning through performativity, social connectedness and immersive workplace learning. As the case studies illustrate, this transitional approach has enabled our millennial learners more confidently to take risks, accept challenges and transform their understanding of their own knowledge, skills and identities.

Abstract

Conservation of breeding seabirds typically requires detailed data on where they feed at sea. Ecological niche models (ENMs) can fill data gaps, but rarely perform well when transferred to new regions. Alternatively, the foraging radius approach simply encircles the sea surrounding a breeding seabird colony (a foraging circle), but overestimates foraging habitat. Here, we investigate whether ENMs can transfer (predict) foraging niches of breeding tropical seabirds between global colonies, and whether ENMs can refine foraging circles. We collate a large global dataset of tropical seabird tracks (12000 trips, 16 species, 60 colonies) to build a comprehensive summary of tropical seabird foraging ranges and to train ENMs. We interrogate ENM transferability and assess the confidence with which unsuitable habitat predicted by ENMs can be excluded from within foraging circles. We apply this refinement framework to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia to identify a network of candidate marine protected areas (MPAs) for seabirds. We found little ability to generalise and transfer breeding tropical seabird foraging niches across all colonies for any species (mean AUC: 0.56, range 0.4-0.82). Low global transferability was partially explained by colony clusters that predicted well internally but other colony clusters poorly. After refinement with ENMs, foraging circles still contained 89% of known foraging areas from tracking data, providing confidence that important foraging habitat was not erroneously excluded by greater refinement from high transferability ENMs nor minor refinement from low transferability ENMs. Foraging radii estimated the total foraging area of the GBR breeding seabird community as 2,941,000 km2, which was refined by excluding between 197,000 km2 and 1,826,000 km2 of unsuitable foraging habitat. ENMs trained on local GBR tracking achieved superior refinement over globally trained models, demonstrating the value of local tracking. Our framework demonstrates an effective method to delineate candidate MPAs for breeding seabirds in data-poor regions.

39. Environmental Technology Transfer Needs of Bay Area Business and Environmental Consultants.

Abstract

In 1995, Merritt College, in Oakland, California, conducted telephone interviews with 23 hazardous waste generating businesses and 30 environmental professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area to determine interest in receiving training from the college related to waste management and areas of training needed. An analysis of responses revealed the following: (1) 83% of the responding waste-generating businesses handled hazardous waste, with two-thirds reporting that they required permits; (2) with respect to these businesses' training needs, worker health and safety was the most cited area of greatest importance, while access to regulations, environmental cleanup, hazardous waste management, recycling, and managing wastewater discharges were also cited; (3) most of the waste-generating businesses preferred one-on-one education, while 4- to 16-hour day or evening classes and ongoing, onsite training also received support; (4) smaller waste-generating companies primarily expressed interest in learning overall compliance regulations in a hands-on setting, while businesses of all sizes were interested in training to reduce the cost of compliance; (5) for the 30 environmental professionals, 60% served more private than public clients; and (6) 66% of these professionals expressed a need for information on soil vapor extraction and 40% were interested in environmental design. 42. Environmental Careers: A Pilot Employment Market Survey.

Abstract

In June 1994, Merritt College, in Oakland, California, conducted a study to determine career employment prospects for high school graduates and community college students in programs in the college's Environmental Sciences (ES) department and tech prep program. A sample of 178 organizations from the environmental industry was developed and divided into the categories of small businesses, large businesses or corporations, non-governmental organizations or advocacy groups, non-advocacy groups, governmental organizations, research organizations, physical plant management, professional and trade societies, and listing organizations. Telephone interviews were completed with individuals at 69% of the organizations, requesting their perceptions of employment trends and needs. In general, responses indicated that there was a growth in and an ongoing demand for community college graduates in environmental industries, especially through internships and affirmative action programs. Larger government and private sector companies, however, reported less growth than smaller agencies and businesses. Job skills needed by graduates that were commonly cited by respondents included interpersonal, public contact, and teamwork abilities, as well as general understanding of technical and scientific principles and familiarity with the tools of the workplace. Recommendations for improving programs in the department include improving articulation and academic advising efforts, updating curricula, restructuring majors into a broader core with specialty options, upgrading facilities, and improving student support and program coordination. Appendixes include a description of ES programs at Merritt College, a curriculum development proposal, a progress report on the development of environmental programs at the college, and sample tech prep course selections.
