Abstract Ongoing Arctic greening can increase productivity and reindeer pasture quality in the tundra. However, greening may also entail proliferation of unpalatable species, with consequences for pastoral social-ecological systems. Here we show extensive greening across 20 reindeer districts in Norway between 2003 and 2020, which has reduced pasture diversity. The allelopathic, evergreen dwarf-shrub crowberry increased its biomass by 60%, with smaller increases of deciduous shrubs and no increase in forbs and graminoids, the most species rich growth forms. There was no evidence for higher reindeer densities promoting crowberry. The current management decision-making process aims at sustainable pasture management but does not explicitly account for pasture changes and reduced diversity. Large-scale shifts towards evergreening and increased allelopathy may thus undermine the resource base for this key Arctic herbivore and the pastoral social-ecological system. Management that is sensitive to changes in pasture diversity could avoid mismanagement of a social-ecological system in transition.

This study proposes a novel approach to address the challenges posed by the increasing number of renewable sources in power grids, particularly focusing on networked microgrids. The proposed method integrates digital twin technology and blockchain technology to provide power support in networked microgrids. The method comprises three main components: 1) Blockchain Network: A blockchain network is established, utilizing a modified proof of stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This network is responsible for maintaining hourly records and tracking system changes, including faults. Fault events are recorded in real-time, and a bidding mechanism is employed to determine which microgrids interconnect and provide power support to mitigate power imbalances. 2) Digital Twins: Digital twins are created for each distributed generation and energy storage unit within the microgrids. These digital twins play a crucial role in the proposed PoS consensus mechanism, providing an additional layer of validation for transaction records. 3) Long short-term memory (LSTM)-based Controller: An LSTM-based controller is implemented to ensure stable operation of the microgrids, even during fault events and interconnections with other microgrids. The controller is trained to maintain stable voltage levels within the system. The digital twins and LSTM-based controllers are optimized using Bayesian Optimization to determine the best parameters and hyperparameters. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively records hourly system details and fault events. Additionally, power hardware-in-the-loop simulations confirm that the LSTM-based controller can maintain stable voltage levels and outperforms other controllers in terms of performance.

Introduction and Objectives: Alcoholic Hepatitis (AH) causes acute inflammation of the liver. The prognosis depends on the recovery of the liver from rapid improvement to multi-organ failure and death. There are scales that establish the prognosis and respond to steroid in AH, based on biochemical markers, none uses lactate levels. The lactate level in a patient with hepatitis may be increased. To determine if the MELD-Lactate scale is better than MELD for predicting with greater accuracy the severity and early mortality in patients with Alcoholic Hepatitis. Materials and Patients: Retrospective, retrollective and analytical study, from 2019 to 2022. The variables were obtained with laboratories upon admission, including lactate levels. The area under the curve for sensitivity and specificity was calculated for predictive scales and MELD-lactate to determine mortality at 28 and 90 days. Results: Include 70 patients, 59 men (84.2%) and 11 women (15.7%), age 43.2 ±9.8 years. The mortality at 28 days was 19 patients (27.1%) and at 90 days it was 18 patients (25.7%), a total of 37 (52%). The area under the curve for MELD-Lactate was in general mortality 0.823; 0.705-0.941 (sensibility 81.8% specificity 72.4%), at 28 days 0.874; 0.780-0.968 (sensibility 88.9%; specificity 71.3%) and 90 days there was no significance, compared with MELD which was general mortality 0.741; 0.603-0.878 (sensibility 81.8% specificity 66.1%), at 28 days MELD 0.766; 0.615-.916 (sensibility 88.9% specificity 63.3%) and at 90 days there was no significance, with the rest of the scales (MELD 3.0, ABIC, Maddrey, MELD- Na and Glasgow, it was less than that of MELD-Lactate. (Figure 1,2). Conclusions: Patients with severe AH have higher mortality, either early or late. In our study we showed that the MELD-lactate scale may be a better prognostic scale for early mortality in patients with alcohol hepatitis, since it showed a better performance than all the other scales used, although these results must be confirmed in other hospital centers, we can recommend their use.

In this manuscript, we introduce a novel parametric family of multistep iterative methods designed to solve nonlinear equations. This family is derived from a damped Newton’s scheme but includes an additional Newton step with a weight function and a “frozen” derivative, that is, the same derivative than in the previous step. Initially, we develop a quad-parametric class with a first-order convergence rate. Subsequently, by restricting one of its parameters, we accelerate the convergence to achieve a third-order uni-parametric family. We thoroughly investigate the convergence properties of this final class of iterative methods, assess its stability through dynamical tools, and evaluate its performance on a set of test problems. We conclude that there exists one optimal fourth-order member of this class, in the sense of Kung–Traub’s conjecture. Our analysis includes stability surfaces and dynamical planes, revealing the intricate nature of this family. Notably, our exploration of stability surfaces enables the identification of specific family members suitable for scalar functions with a challenging convergence behavior, as they may exhibit periodical orbits and fixed points with attracting behavior in their corresponding dynamical planes. Furthermore, our dynamical study finds members of the family of iterative methods with exceptional stability. This property allows us to converge to the solution of practical problem-solving applications even from initial estimations very far from the solution. We confirm our findings with various numerical tests, demonstrating the efficiency and reliability of the presented family of iterative methods.

This paper introduces an iterative method with a remarkable level of accuracy, namely fourth-order convergence. The method is specifically tailored to meet the optimality condition under the Kung–Traub conjecture by linear combination. This method, with an efficiency index of approximately 1.5874, employs a blend of localized and semi-localized analysis to improve both efficiency and convergence. This study aims to investigate semi-local convergence, dynamical analysis to assess stability and convergence rate, and the use of the proposed solver for systems of nonlinear equations. The results underscore the potential of the proposed method for several applications in polynomiography and other areas of mathematical research. The improved performance of the proposed optimal method is demonstrated with mathematical models taken from many domains, such as physics, mechanics, chemistry, and combustion, to name a few.

La pandemia por el virus COVID-19 ha obligado a muchos docentes universitarios a iniciarse en el uso de herramientas docentes basadas en la Web 2.0. A través de una encuesta, en la que han participado 1.344 profesores españoles y 3.930 profesores italianos de todos los campos de conocimiento, se ha evaluado si los docentes perciben que el uso de herramientas como las plataformas de videos, los blogs o las aplicaciones de trabajo colaborativo aumentará en los próximos años y modificará su forma de dar clases, aunque sea en un sistema de docencia presencial. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que, en ambos países, la percepción del cambio es bastante alta y que esta percepción depende principalmente de características psicográficas del profesor, tales como la actitud, la utilidad percibida, la norma social y el compromiso afectivo con la docencia. Se comentan semejanzas y diferencias entre las dos muestras de profesores universitarios.

Resumo: Estudo transversal, de base hospitalar, nacional, com entrevista de 23.894 puérperas, em 2011-2012, com os objetivos de estimar a prevalência de consumo de álcool na gestação e identificar grupos mais vulneráveis. O uso de álcool na gestação foi identificado por meio da escala TWEAK, sendo classificadas como “diagnóstico presumível de uso inadequado de álcool” mulheres com pontuação ≥ 2. Calculou-se a prevalência nacional de uso de álcool e em subgrupos de acordo com características maternas, com respectivos intervalos de 95% de confiança (IC95%). Foram encontradas, de forma gráfica, coexistência de tabagismo, inadequação de consultas pré-natais e ingestão de bebidas alcoólicas na gestação. A prevalência de uso de álcool foi de 14% (IC95%: 13,3-14,7), com 10% (IC95%: 9,3-10,6) das mulheres apresentando diagnóstico presumível de uso inadequado de álcool na gestação. Maiores prevalências de uso de álcool e de diagnóstico presumível de uso inadequado foram observadas em mulheres pretas, com 12-19 anos de idade, com menor índice de escolaridade, de classe econômica mais baixa, sem companheiro, sem trabalho remunerado, com mais de três partos anteriores, que não queriam engravidar, com assistência pré-natal inadequada, com parto em serviços públicos e que referiram tabagismo na gestação. Estima-se que 1,2% das mulheres entrevistadas apresentavam concomitância dos três fatores de risco para desfechos perinatais negativos: fumo, álcool e assistência pré-natal inadequada. Os resultados demonstraram alta prevalência de uso de álcool na gestação e de diagnóstico presumível de uso inadequado, principalmente por mulheres em situação de vulnerabilidade social. São relevantes a elaboração de políticas públicas que contemplem ações de prevenção do uso de bebidas alcoólicas e a prestação de serviços de apoio para cessação do uso de álcool na gravidez.

Birds, including canaries and other birds, have become increasingly popular as pets. Bird fairs, where breeders gather and show their production in a championship setting, present a setting for possible Salmonella spp. contamination and transmission. Therefore, this study estimated the rate of Salmonella spp. isolation from cage papers, located in the bottom of cages of exotic pet birds, including canaries. Collected Salmonella isolates were used to determine the antimicrobial resistance profile to 52 antibiotics and 17 commercial disinfectants, based on pure or a mixture of acids, alcohols, aldehydes, alkalis, halogens, peroxygen, and quaternary ammonium compounds. The samples consisted of 774 cage papers taken in the 2015 Argentinean canary breeder championship, pooling three cage papers into one sterile sampling bag. Only one pool of the cage papers was positive for Salmonella spp. (0.4%), which belonged to the sample from three frill canary cages. Two strains of Salmonella serotype Glostrup were isolated, which were only resistant to sulfonamides and erythromycin and sensitive to alkali-based product PL301 AS. Although the rate of Salmonella spp. isolation from cage papers in an Argentinean canary breeder championship is low, it should not be discounted because Salmonella ser. Glostrup can be a source of human Salmonella outbreaks and they show high resistance to disinfecting products.

In this paper, we present a three-step sixth-order class of iterative schemes to estimate the solutions of a nonlinear system of equations. This procedure is designed by means of a weight function technique. We apply this procedure for predicting the shear strength of a reinforced concrete beam. The values for the parameters of the nonlinear system describing this problem were randomly selected inside the prescribed ranges by technical standards for structural concrete. Moreover, some of these parameters were fixed taking into consideration the solvability region of the adopted steel constitutive model. The effectiveness of the new class is also compared with other current schemes in terms of the computational efficiency and numerical performance, with very good results. The advantages of this new class come from the low computational cost, due to the existence of an only inverse operator.

Aim of study: Intensive agriculture impacts physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil; therefore, the addition of organic matter (OM) to soil can have significant implications for crop production. This study investigated the impact of three crop management systems on tomato production and soil microbial communities in intensive greenhouse farming. Area of study: Province of Almería (Spain). Material and methods: The three crop management systems included: (1) conventional management, using synthetic chemical fertilizers without OM application (CM); (2) conventional management, using synthetic chemical fertilizers with at least one OM application in the last three years (CMOM); and (3) fully organic management, featuring yearly OM applications and no use of synthetic chemical fertilizers (ORG). Main results: Compared to CM soils, OM addition in CMOM and ORG led to higher soil NO3- and NH4+ content, which in turn increased nitrogen (N) availability, leading to an increase in soil respiration. The addition of OM also altered the composition of prokaryotic and fungal soil communities. Besides, the addition of OM reduced the presence and abundance of potential fungal pathogenic organisms, like Sclerotinia sp. and Plectosphaerella cucumerina. OM addition to conventionally managed greenhouses (CMOM) led to higher crop yields compared to CM greenhouses, resulting in an overall increase of 880 g m-2. Production under fully organic management (ORG) was lowest, possibly due to the nutrient and pest management practices used. Research highlights: Our data show the importance of organic matter management in shaping microbial communities in intensive greenhouse systems, which can be a key factor in developing a more sustainable agriculture to feed a growing human population.

IntroductionShrub promotes the survival, growth and reproduction of understory species by buffering the environmental extremes and improving limited resources (i.e., facilitation effect) in arid and semiarid regions. However, the importance of soil water and nutrient availability on shrub facilitation, and its trend along a drought gradient have been relatively less addressed in water-limited systems.MethodsWe investigated species richness, plant size, soil total nitrogen and dominant grass leaf δ13C within and outside the dominant leguminous cushion-like shrub Caragana versicolor along a water deficit gradient in drylands of Tibetan Plateau.ResultsWe found that C. versicolor increased grass species richness but had a negative effect on annual and perennial forbs. Along the water deficit gradient, plant interaction assessed by species richness (RIIspecies) showed a unimodal pattern with shift from increase to decrease, while plant interaction assessed by plant size (RIIsize) did not vary significantly. The effect of C. versicolor on soil nitrogen, rather than water availability, determined its overall effect on understory species richness. Neither the effect of C. versicolor on soil nitrogen nor water availability affected plant size.DiscussionOur study suggests that the drying tendency in association with the recent warming trends observed in drylands of Tibetan Plateau, will likely hinder the facilitation effect of nurse leguminous shrub on understories if moisture availability crosses a critical minimum threshold.

Abstract We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies assessing HCV infection rates in haemodialysis patients in Brazil (Prospero CRD #42021275068). We included studies on patients under haemodialysis, comprising both convenience samples and exhaustive information from selected services. Patients underwent HCV serological testing with or without confirmation by HCV RNA PCR. Exclusion criteria were the following: absence of primary empirical information and studies without information on their respective settings, study year, accurate infection rates, or full specification of diagnostic tests. Studies with samples ≤ 30 and serial assessments with repeated information were also excluded. Reference databases included PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, and Web of Science for the period 1989–2019. A systematic review was carried out, followed by two independent meta-analyses: (i) studies with data on HCV prevalence and (ii) studies with a confirmatory PCR (i.e., active infection), respectively. A comprehensive set of different methods and procedures were used: forest plots and respective statistics, polynomial regression, meta-regression, subgroup influence, quality assessment, and trim-and-fill analysis. 29 studies and 11,290 individuals were assessed. The average time patients were in haemodialysis varied from 23.5 to 56.3 months. Prevalence of HCV infection was highly heterogeneous, with a pronounced decrease from 1992 to 2001, followed by a plateau and a slight decrease in recent years. The summary measure for HCV prevalence was 34% (95% CI 26–43%) for studies implemented before 2001. For studies implemented after 2001, the corresponding summary measure was 11% (95% CI 8–15%). Estimates for prevalence of active HCV infection were also highly heterogeneous. There was a marked decline from 1996 to 2001, followed by a plateau and a slight increase after 2010. The summary measure for active HCV infection was 19% (95% CI 15–25%) in studies carried out before 2001. For studies implemented after 2001, the corresponding summary measure was 9% (95% CI 6–13%). Heterogeneity was pervasive, but different analyses helped to identify its underlying sources. Besides the year each study was conducted, the findings differed markedly between geographic regions and were heavily influenced by the size of the studies and publication biases. Our systematic review and meta-analysis documented a substantial decline in HCV prevalence among Brazilian haemodialysis patients from 1992 to 2015. CKD should be targeted with specific interventions to prevent HCV infection, and if prevention fails, prompt diagnosis and treatment. Although the goal of HCV elimination by 2030 in Brazil remains elusive, it is necessary to adopt measures to achieve micro-elimination and to launch initiatives towards targeted interventions to curb the spread of HCV in people with CKD, among other high-risk groups. This is of particular concern in the context of a protracted COVID-19 pandemic and a major economic and political crisis.

Networked microgrids have many advantages for consumers and small energy producers, including higher reliability than non-networked microgrids. However, energy transaction, network interconnection, the intermittent nature of renewable sources, and other problems lead to challenges in the practical implementation of networked microgrids. Despite its favorable use of space, a floating PV system presents challenges that differ from those associated with its land-based counterparts because it is prone to the motion of the surface of the water, resulting in an unpredictable power output. This work presents a hierarchical energy management system (EMS) to address these issues. In level 1 of the EMS, which is for the overall management thereof, a blockchain model is used to manage transactions among microgrids. A grid synchronization algorithm is implemented in level 2 of the EMS, which manages the interconnection of microgrids. Level 2 is activated when an energy transaction between microgrids is needed. An on-line recurrent neural network (RNN)-based controller for an energy storage system (ESS), which is designed specifically to mitigate the problem caused by a floating PV platform, is deployed in level 3 as a local controller. The results of a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation demonstrate that the EMS can properly coordinate the levels in the hierarchical scheme to interconnect and provide power support between the microgrids. Real-time simulation results show that the ESS controller responds well, proving the viability of the hardware controller. According to these findings, the hierarchical EMS that is proposed in this work can solve the considered problems.

Brazil has a historical gap regarding information on violence against women. Herein we aimed to evaluate the association of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics with physical violence against women in Brazil, as well as the possible escalation of violence to severe patterns of violence. We analysed data from the 3rd Brazilian Household Survey on Substance Use, in 2015. The main outcomes were reporting any physical violence and being stabbed/shot in the last 12-months. Logistic regressions were fitted to assess the association between socioeconomic and demographic variables with the outcomes. We estimated 3.8 million women reported any physical violence (5.52%): 3.79% reported threats to beat/ push/kick, 1.87% threats with knife/gun, 2.49% were beaten/pushed/kicked, 0.63% were spanked/ choked, and 0.21% were stabbed/shot. The higher the severity of violence, the higher the number of types of violence experienced. The likelihood of reporting any violence was higher among women 18–24 years, without a stable partner, who were at an informal job or unemployed, and who live in urban areas. The sociodemographic characteristics associated with reporting any violence reinforce the importance of addressing gender inequalities. Evidence of escalation violence reinforces the need to protect and care for women who report any type of violence.

Objetivo. Evaluar la cobertura y las desigualdades en las intervenciones de salud maternoinfantil entre haitianos, migrantes haitianos en la República Dominicana y dominicanos. Métodos. Estudio transversal con datos de encuestas representativas en el nivel nacional realizadas en Haití en el 2012 y en la República Dominicana en el 2014. Se compararon nueve indicadores: la demanda de planificación familiar satisfecha con métodos modernos, la atención prenatal, la atención del parto (por personal de salud calificado), la vacunación infantil (con vacuna con la tuberculosis, el sarampión y tres dosis de la vacuna triple bacteriana), la gestión de casos de enfermedad en la infancia (administración de sales de rehidratación oral para la diarrea y búsqueda de atención sanitaria ante la sospecha de neumonía) e índice de cobertura compuesto. La riqueza se midió mediante un índice basado en los activos, dividido en terciles, y el lugar de residencia (urbano o rural) se determinó según la definición del país. Resultados. La población haitiana mostró la menor cobertura respecto de la demanda de planificación familiar satisfecha con métodos modernos (44,2%), atención prenatal (65,3%), asistencia calificada en el parto (39,5%) y búsqueda de atención sanitaria ante la sospecha de neumonía (37,9%), y la mayor cobertura respecto de la administración de sales de rehidratación oral para la diarrea (52,9%); los migrantes haitianos presentaron la menor cobertura en DPT3 (44,1%) y la administración de sales de rehidratación oral para la diarrea (38%) y la mayor cobertura en la búsqueda de atención sanitaria ante la sospecha de neumonía (80,7%). La población dominicana presentó la cobertura más alta en la mayoría de los indicadores, excepto en la administración de sales de rehidratación oral para la diarrea y en la búsqueda de atención sanitaria ante la sospecha de neumonía. El índice de cobertura compuesto fue de 79,2% para los dominicanos, 69,0% para los migrantes haitianos y 52,6% para los haitianos. Las desigualdades socioeconómicas tuvieron, en general, un patrón a favor de los ricos y de las zonas urbanas en todos los grupos analizados. Conclusión. Los migrantes haitianos en la República Dominicana presentaron una mayor cobertura que la población haitiana residente en Haití, pero menor que la población dominicana. Ambos países deberían planificar acciones y políticas para aumentar la cobertura y abordar las desigualdades existentes en las intervenciones de salud materna.

Objetivo: El propósito de este estudio es reportar datos epidemiológicos y clínicos de los pacientes que ingresaron con heridas por arma de fuego en columna. Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo y observacional. Se incluyeron pacientes que presentaban una lesión medular a secundaria a una herida por arma de fuego que ingresaron en nuestro hospital (centro de trauma de nivel III) desde julio de 2018 hasta julio de 2020. Se registraron datos demográficos y clínicos que incluían edad, sexo, estado civil, ocupación, grado de lesión (cervical, torácica o lumbar), grado de deterioro neurológico al ingreso, lesiones asociadas, tratamiento establecido, duración de la estancia hospitalaria y tasa de mortalidad. Resultados: Se incluyeron en el estudio un total de 55 pacientes, de los cuales 50 pacientes (90,9%) eran hombres y 5 mujeres (9,09%). La edad media fue de 30,2 años. Tres pacientes fallecieron durante la hospitalización lo que representa una tasa de mortalidad del 5,45%. Conclusiones: Las lesiones por arma de fuego en la columna están asociadas con secuelas importantes, que requieren tratamientos largos y costosos. Este estudio obtuvo una de las incidencias más altas de heridas por arma de fuego en la columna vertebral reportadas en la literatura.

In this paper, an iterative procedure to find the solution of a nonlinear constitutive model for embedded steel reinforcement is introduced. The model presents different multiplicities, where parameters are randomly selected within a solvability region. To achieve this, a class of multipoint fixed-point iterative schemes for single roots is modified to find multiple roots, achieving the fourth order of convergence. Complex discrete dynamics techniques are employed to select the members with the most stable performance. The mechanical problem referred to earlier, as well as some academic problems involving multiple roots, are solved numerically to verify the theoretical analysis, robustness, and applicability of the proposed scheme.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To evaluate the support of the Brazilian population to the alcohol-policies proposed by the World Health Organization to decrease alcohol harm (specifically: to decrease alcohol availability and advertising, and to increase pricing). In addition, we evaluated the factors associated with being against those policies. METHODS Data from 16,273 Brazilians, aged 12–65 years, interviewed in the 3rd Brazilian Household Survey on Substance Use (BHSU-3) were analyzed. The BHSU-3 is a nationwide, probability survey conducted in 2015. Individuals were asked if they would be against, neutral, or in favor of seven alcohol policies grouped as: 1) Strengthen restrictions on alcohol availability; 2) Enforce bans or restrictions on alcohol advertising, sponsorship, and promotion; and 3) Raise prices on alcohol through excise taxes and pricing. Generalized linear models were fitted to evaluate factors associated with being against each one of those policies and against all of policies. RESULTS Overall, 28% of the Brazilians supported all the above mentioned policies, whereas 16% were against them. The highest rate of approval refers to restricting advertising (53%), the lowest refers to increasing prices (40%). Factors associated with being against all policies were: being male (AOR = 1.1; 95%CI: 1.0–1.3), not having a religion (AOR = 1.4; 95%CI: 1.1–1.8), being catholic (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI: 1.1–1.5), and alcohol dependence (AOR = 1.6; 95%CI: 1.1–2.4). CONCLUSIONS The Brazilian government could count on the support of most of the population to restrict alcohol advertising. This information is essential to tackle the lobby of the alcohol industry and its clever marketing strategy.

Abstract Introduction Recent research has suggested an increase in the global prevalence of psychiatric symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess whether lifestyle behaviors can predict the presence of depression and anxiety in the Brazilian general population, using a model developed in Spain. Methods A web survey was conducted during April-May 2020, which included the Short Multidimensional Inventory Lifestyle Evaluation (SMILE) scale, assessing lifestyle behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Depression and anxiety were examined using the PHQ-2 and the GAD-7, respectively. Elastic net, random forest, and gradient tree boosting were used to develop predictive models. Each technique used a subset of the Spanish sample to train the models, which were then tested internally (vs. the remainder of the Spanish sample) and externally (vs. the full Brazilian sample), evaluating their effectiveness. Results The study sample included 22,562 individuals (19,069 from Brazil, and 3,493 from Spain). The models developed performed similarly and were equally effective in predicting depression and anxiety in both tests, with internal test AUC-ROC values of 0.85 (depression) and 0.86 (anxiety), and external test AUC-ROC values of 0.85 (depression) and 0.84 (anxiety). Meaning of life was the strongest predictor of depression, while sleep quality was the strongest predictor of anxiety during the COVID-19 epidemic. Conclusions Specific lifestyle behaviors during the early COVID-19 epidemic successfully predicted the presence of depression and anxiety in a large Brazilian sample using machine learning models developed on a Spanish sample. Targeted interventions focused on promoting healthier lifestyles are encouraged.

Objective. To assess coverage and inequalities in maternal and child health interventions among Haitians, Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic and Dominicans. Methods. Cross-sectional study using data from nationally representative surveys carried out in Haiti in 2012 and in the Dominican Republic in 2014. Nine indicators were compared: demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods, antenatal care, delivery care (skilled birth attendance), child vaccination (BCG, measles and DPT3), child case management (oral rehydration salts for diarrhea and careseeking for suspected pneumonia), and the composite coverage index. Wealth was measured through an asset-based index, divided into tertiles, and place of residence (urban or rural) was established according to the country definition. Results. Haitians showed the lowest coverage for demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods (44.2%), antenatal care (65.3%), skilled birth attendance (39.5%) and careseeking for suspected pneumonia (37.9%), and the highest for oral rehydration salts for diarrhea (52.9%), whereas Haitian migrants had the lowest coverage in DPT3 (44.1%) and oral rehydration salts for diarrhea (38%) and the highest in careseeking for suspected pneumonia (80.7%). Dominicans presented the highest coverage for most indicators, except oral rehydration salts for diarrhea and careseeking for suspected pneumonia. The composite coverage index was 79.2% for Dominicans, 69.0% for Haitian migrants, and 52.6% for Haitians. Socioeconomic inequalities generally had pro-rich and pro-urban pattern in all analyzed groups. Conclusion. Haitian migrants presented higher coverage than Haitians, but lower than Dominicans. Both countries should plan actions and policies to increase coverage and address inequalities of maternal health interventions.

Abstract Background Low molecular weight carrageenan (Cg) is a seaweed-derived sulfated polysaccharide widely used as inflammatory stimulus in preclinical studies. However, the molecular mechanisms of Cg-induced inflammation are not fully elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the molecular basis involved in Cg-induced macrophages activation and cytokines production. Methods Primary culture of mouse peritoneal macrophages were stimulated with Kappa Cg. The supernatant and cell lysate were used for ELISA, western blotting, immunofluorescence. Cg-induced mouse colitis was also developed. Results Here we show that Cg activates peritoneal macrophages to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF and IL-1β. While Cg-induced TNF production/secretion depends on TLR4/MyD88 signaling, the production of pro-IL-1β relies on TLR4/TRIF/SYK/reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling pathway. The maturation of pro-IL1β into IL-1β is dependent on canonical NLRP3 inflammasome activation via Pannexin-1/P2X7/K+ efflux signaling. In vivo, Cg-induced colitis was reduced in mice in the absence of NLRP3 inflammasome components. Conclusions In conclusion, we unravel a critical role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in Cg-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines production and colitis, which is an important discovery on the pro-inflammatory properties of this sulfated polysaccharide for pre-clinical studies. A load flow study referred to as a power flow study is a numerical analysis of the electricity that flows through any electrical power system. For instance, if a transmission line needs to be taken out of service for maintenance, load flow studies allow us to assess whether the remaining line can carry the load without exceeding its rated capacity. So, we need to understand about the voltage level and voltage phase angle on each bus under steady-state conditions to keep the bus voltage within a specific range. In this paper, our goal is to present a higher order efficient iterative method to carry out a power flow study to determine the voltages (magnitude and angle) for a specific load, generation and network conditions. We introduce a new seventh-order three-step iterative scheme for obtaining approximate solution of nonlinear systems of equations. We attain the seventh-order convergence by using four function evaluations which makes it worthy of interest. Moreover, we show its applicability to the electrical power system for calculating voltages and phase angles. By calculating the bus angle and voltage level, we conclude that the performance of the power system is assessed in a more efficient manner using the new scheme. In addition, dynamical planes of the methods applied on nonlinear systems of equations show global convergence.

The Iberian pig breed includes several well-differentiated strains. The present study evaluated carcass traits, fat deposition and muscle expression of important lipogenic genes (SCD, ME1, ACACA, FASN, EGR1, ACOX and ACLY) using 65 male pigs of 3 Iberian strains (20 Lampiño, 23 Torbiscal, and 22 Retinto) finished either in a conventional, concentrate-based system (CF) or in montanera (MF), a traditional free-range system with acorn feeding. Torbiscal had the highest ham, Longissimus thoracis and prime cuts yields, and the thinnest subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). Retinto had the highest monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and percentage of intramuscular fat (IMF), while Lampiño had the greatest content of saturated fatty acids (SFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), atherogenic (AI) and thrombogenic (TI) indexes in SAT. Conventionally finished pigs had the highest ham, L. thoracis and prime cuts yields, and SFA. Montanera-finished animals had the highest PUFA and MUFA contents, and the lowest AI, TI and n6/n3 ratio in SAT. In relation to gene expression, Retinto had the greatest SCD, FASN and ACLY levels. Most studied genes were overexpressed in CF pigs. In conclusion, MF pigs had healthier fat than CF pigs, and Retinto had the healthiest fat and the greatest lipogenic trend in muscle, supported by IMF and lipogenic gene expression.

This manuscript is focused on a new parametric class of multi-step iterative procedures to find the solutions of systems of nonlinear equations. Starting from Ostrowski’s scheme, the class is constructed by adding a Newton step with a Jacobian matrix taken from the previous step and employing a divided difference operator, resulting in a triparametric scheme with a convergence order of four. The convergence order of the family can be accelerated to six by setting two parameters, resulting in a uniparametric family. We performed dynamic and numerical development to analyze the stability of the sixth-order family. Previous studies for scalar functions allow us to isolate those elements of the family with stable performance for solving practical problems. In this regard, we present dynamical planes showing the complexity of the family. In addition, the numerical properties of the class are analyzed with several test problems.

Objectives: Previous studies have estimated the 30-day prevalence of alcohol use to be approximately 21% among youth in Brazil, despite the legal drinking age of 18 years. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of underage drinking and its associated factors among adolescents in Brazil. Methods: The 3rd National Survey on Drug Use by the Brazilian Population (III Levantamento Nacional sobre o Uso de Drogas pela População Brasileira) is a nationwide, multi-stage, probability-sample household survey. Herein, youth between the ages of 12-17 years were included. Lifetime and 12-month alcohol use prevalence were estimated. Factors associated with 12-month alcohol use were evaluated through multivariate analysis considering survey weights and design. Results: Overall, 628 youth were interviewed. Estimated lifetime and 12-month alcohol use were 34.3% (standard error [SE] = 1.9) and 22.2% (SE = 1.7), respectively. Factors associated with 12-month drinking were: other/no religion vs. Christianity; living in rural vs. urban areas; self-reported diagnosis of depression vs. no self-reported depression; lifetime tobacco use vs. no history of tobacco use; and any illicit drug use vs. no history of illicit drug use. Conclusion: Considering that alcohol use is a major risk factor for early death among Brazilian youth, our findings highlight the importance of preventative measures to reduce underage drinking.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a multidrug-resistant pathogen responsible for infections in immunocompromised patients. Here, itraconazole (ITR), a commercial antifungal drug with low effectiveness against C. neoformans, was combined with different synthetic antimicrobial peptides (SAMPs), Mo-CBP3-PepII, RcAlb-PepII, RcAlb-PepIII, PepGAT, and PepKAA. The Mo-CBP3-PepII was designed based on the sequence of MoCBP3, purified from Moringa oleifera seeds. RcAlb-PepII and RcAlb-PepIII were designed using Rc-2S-Alb, purified from Ricinus communis seed cakes. The putative sequence of a chitinase from Arabidopsis thaliana was used to design PepGAT and PepKAA. All SAMPs have a positive liquid charge and a hydrophobic potential ranging from 41–65%. The mechanisms of action responsible for the combined effect were evaluated for the best combinations using fluorescence microscopy (FM). The synthetic peptides enhanced the activity of ITR by 10-fold against C. neoformans. Our results demonstrated that the combinations could induce pore formation in the membrane and the overaccumulation of ROS on C. neoformans cells. Our findings indicate that our peptides successfully potentialize the activity of ITR against C. neoformans. Therefore, synthetic peptides are potential molecules to assist antifungal agents in treating Cryptococcal infections.

Research interest in iterative multipoint schemes to solve nonlinear problems has increased recently because of the drawbacks of point-to-point methods, which need high-order derivatives to increase the order of convergence. However, this order is not the only key element to classify the iterative schemes. We aim to design new multipoint fixed point classes without memory, that improve or bring together the existing ones in different areas such as computational efficiency, stability and also convergence order. In this manuscript, we present a family of parametric iterative methods, whose order of convergence is four, that has been designed by using composition and weight function techniques. A qualitative analysis is made, based on complex discrete dynamics, to select those elements of the class with best stability properties on low-degree polynomials. This stable behavior is directly related with the simplicity of the fractals defined by the basins of attraction. In the opposite, particular methods with unstable performance present high-complexity in the fractals of their basins. The stable members are demonstrated also be the best ones in terms of numerical performance of non-polynomial functions, with special emphasis on Colebrook-White equation, with wide applications in Engineering.

Approximately 30% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) present steroid resistance (SR). Macrophage migration inhibition factor (MIF) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) could be related to SR. This work aims to evaluate the relationship between MIF and P-pg serum levels in SR in SLE. Methods: Case–control study including 188 SLE patients who were divided into two groups (90 in the steroid-resistant group and 98 in the steroid-sensitive (SS) group) and 35 healthy controls. MIF and P-gp serum levels were determined by ELISA. Multivariable logistic regression and chi-squared automatic interaction detection (CHAID) were used to explore risk factors for SR. Results: The steroid-resistant group presented higher MIF and P-gp serum levels in comparison with the SS (p < 0.001) and reference (p < 0.001) groups. MIF correlated positively with P-gp (rho = 0.41, p < 0.001). MIF (≥15.75 ng/mL) and P-gp (≥15.22 ng/mL) were a risk factor for SR (OR = 2.29, OR = 5.27). CHAID identified high P-gp as the main risk factor for SR and high MIF as the second risk factor in those patients with low P-gp. Conclusions: An association between MIF and P-gp serum levels was observed in SR. CHAID identified P-gp ≥ 15.22 ng/mL as the main risk factor for SR. More studies are needed to validate these results.

Objetivo: Comparar la eficiencia de las cuatro técnicas quirúrgicas más utilizadas para el manejo de la espondilitis tuberculosa. Método: Estudio retrospectivo en el que se incluyeron pacientes adultos con diagnóstico confirmado de espondilitis tuberculosa, afectación de dos niveles vertebrales o menos y sin deformidad vertebral grave. Se recopilaron y revisaron los expedientes médicos, los estudios de imagen y los datos demográficos de los pacientes intervenidos para analizar retrospectivamente los resultados clínicos y funcionales de cada grupo. Las variables primarias fueron la erradicación de la infección, la fusión vertebral y las complicaciones. Entre las variables secundarias se estudiaron el sangrado intraoperatorio, la estancia hospitalaria y el tiempo quirúrgico. Resultados: Entre los grupos analizados no hubo diferencias significativas (p ≥ 0.05) en la mayoría de las variables analizadas, pero sí (p ≤ 0.001) respecto al sangrado, el tiempo quirúrgico, la estancia intrahospitalaria y las complicaciones, a favor del abordaje posterior único. Conclusiones: El abordaje posterior único logró una eficacia clínica similar a la del resto de los abordajes en términos de erradicación de la infección y fusión vertebral; sin embargo, se asoció a menores tiempo quirúrgico, sangrado, estancia hospitalaria y complicaciones.

El uso prolongado de terapia anti-factor de necrosis tumoral es cada vez más frecuente en los pacientes con enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal. Esto expone a los pacientes a un mayor riesgo de infecciones oportunistas y a disminución de la inmunovigilancia que impide la carcinogénesis. Presentamos un reporte de caso de linfoma colorrectal primario asociado a uso prolongado de terapia biológica e infección por citomegalovirus.

Background Cervical cancer (CC) is the fourth leading cause of death from neoplasms in women and is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Several methods have been developed for the screening of cervical lesions and HPV; however, some socio-cultural factors prevent women from undergoing gynecological inspection, which results in a higher risk of mortality from cervical cancer in certain population groups as indigenous communities. This study aimed to compare the concordance in HPV detection from urine and cervical samples, to propose an alternative to cervical scraping, which is commonly used in the cervical cancer screening. Methodology The DNA from cervical scrapings and urine samples was extracted using the proteinase K method followed by precipitation with alcohol, phenol andchloroform; a modification of the proteinase K method was developed in the management of urine sediment. Viral genotyping was performed using INNOLipa. Results The study population consisted of 108 patients from an indigenous population at southern Mexico, 32 without squamous intraepithelial lesions (NSIL) and 76 with low squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL). The majority of NSIL cervical scrapes were negative for HPV (90.63%), whereas more than half of LSIL cases were high-risk HPV positive (51.32%), followed by multiple infection by HR-HPV (17.11%), and multiple infection by LR- and HR-HPV (9.21%). No statistically significant relationship between the cytological diagnosis and the HPV genotypes detected in the urine samples was observed. A concordance of 68.27% for HPV positivity from urine and cervical samples was observed. Similarly, a concordance of 64.52% was observed in the grouping of HPVs by oncogenic risk. HR-HPV was detected in 71% of the urine samples from women with LSIL diagnosis, which suggests that HR-HPV detected in a urine sample could indicate the presence or risk of developing SIL. Conclusion HR-HPV detection in urine samples could be an initial approach for women at risk of developing LSIL and who, for cultural reasons, refuse to undergo a gynecological inspection.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To examine the HIV care cascade among trans women and travestis in São Paulo – Brazil, the most populous city in South America. METHODS: Using data from a cross-sectional study carried out between November 2016 and May 2017 in the city of São Paulo (Divas Research). Respondent driven sampling (RDS) was used to recruit 386 transgender women and travestis who participated in a HIV risk survey and were tested for HIV. The cascade was defined as HIV prevalence, HIV diagnosed, Antiretroviral (ART) Prescription, and currently on ART. A multiple analysis model was conducted to identify the association between sociodemographics and the cascade gaps. RESULTS: Of the trans women living with HIV, 80.9% were already diagnosed, 76.6% of them had been prescribed, of which 90.3% were currently on treatment. Those who were registered in care had a higher rate of ART (aPR 2.06; 95%CI 1.09-3.88). Trans women between 31-40 years old (aPR 1.65; 95%CI 1.09-2.50) and those older than 40 (aPR 1.59; 95%CI 1.04-2.43) had higher prevalence of ART. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest an increase in the testing and treatment policy implementation among trans women in the city of São Paulo, although gaps have been found in the linkage to care. However, young trans women and those not registered in health care service may benefit from efforts to engage this part of the population in care to improve HIV treatment and care outcomes.

Brucella abortus is a pathogen that survives in macrophages. Several virulence factors participate in this process, including the open reading frame (ORF) BAB1_0270 codifying for a zinc-dependent metalloproteinase (ZnMP). Here, its contribution in the intracellular adaptation of B. abortus was analyzed by infecting RAW264.7 macrophages with the mutant B. abortus Δ270 strain. Results showed that this ZnMP did not participated in either the adherence or the initial intracellular traffic of B. abortus in macrophages. Nevertheless, its deletion significantly increased the co-localization of B. abortus Δ270 with phagolysosomal cathepsin D and reduced its co-localization with calnexin present in endoplasmic reticulum (RE)-derived vesicles. Although B. abortus Δ270 showed an upregulated expression of genes involved in virulence (vjbR, hutC, bvrR, virB1), it was insufficient to reach a successful intracellular replication within macrophages. Furthermore, its attenuation favored in macrophages infected the production of high levels of cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) and co-stimulatory proteins (CD80 and CD86), signals required in T cell activation. Finally, its deletion significantly reduced the ability of B. abortus Δ270 to adapt, grow and express several virulence factors under acidic conditions. Based on these results, and considering that this ZnMP has homology with ImmA/IrrE proteases, we discuss its role in the virulence of this pathogen, concluding that ZnMP is required in the intracellular adaptation of B. abortus 2308 during the infection of macrophages.

Los resultados no deseados de las acciones de comunicación se conocen como outcomes no intencionados según los modelos de evaluación más extendidos. La medición de estos outcomes adquiere enorme relevancia en tanto pueden representar efectos adversos para los grupos de interés (stakeholders) que están vinculados a la organización: esta correlación pone en peligro los objetivos comunicativos y puede impactar negativamente en la actividad. En este artículo se analiza el resultado no deseado de una acción de comunicación estratégica. De manera más específica, se propone un análisis de contenido de la aparición de críticas en los medios a las políticas engañosas sobre compromiso medioambiental (greenwashing) durante la celebración de la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Cambio Climático (COP25) realizada en Madrid en 2019. A través de la observación cuantitativa de la cobertura mediática y la cuantificación de las variables extraídas, se llega a definir la verdadera implicación mediática de la perspectiva del greenwashing y, específicamente, su afectación en los potenciales stakeholders.

The promotion of academic entrepreneurship through the creation of university spin-offs (USOs) as a transfer system has been enhanced during the last two decades. This commitment of universities and public policy makers has been based mainly on the use of investments of public funds in universities and the capacity for such investments to create employment and economic growth. In this sense, entrepreneurial skills are one of the strongest determinants of intention. For this reason, the present study proposes the use of the paradigm known as Big Five, which proposes as personality variables those recognized by the acronym OCEAN (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) to recognize if they are determinants of entrepreneurial skills and entrepreneurial intent, all through the application of Theory Planed Behavior (TPB). To study the influence of entrepreneurial skills, a self-administrated questionnaire was sent to more than 33,000 Spanish academics. The responses yielded a sample size of 799. The results show that entrepreneurial skills are the prime determinants of attitude and perceived control, and attitude is the decisive factor that determines the intention to go into business. Therefore, investment in training and the cultivation of skills and attitudes constitute the most relevant factors for achieving an increase in the creation of USOs.

Resumo: Estimativas de mulheres que fizeram aborto provocado em localidades cujas leis são restritivas ainda são escassas na literatura científica, e a não coincidência de estimativas oriundas dos métodos hoje em uso clama pela aplicação de métodos inovadores, como novos métodos indiretos. Tal necessidade é especialmente aguda nas áreas mais densamente povoadas, como as capitais brasileiras, dada a magnitude do fenômeno e os danos e riscos daí decorrentes. O artigo objetiva estimar o número de mulheres que fez aborto provocado no Município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, em 2011, por meio de um modelo hierárquico bayesiano. Ele foi aplicado aos dados de um inquérito domiciliar que subsidiou a utilização do método network scale-up, no Município do Rio de Janeiro, um modelo hierárquico bayesiano utilizando as informações indiretas baseadas na rede de contatos dos participantes selecionados de forma aleatória da população. Das 1.758.145 mulheres de 15-49 anos residentes no Município do Rio de Janeiro (13.025; ICr95%: 10.635; 15.748) mulheres fizeram aborto provocado em 2011, resultando numa incidência acumulada média de 7,41 (ICr95%: 6,05; 8,96) para cada 1.000 mulheres de 15-49 anos. O estudo de autovalidação do modelo permitiu identificar padrões de subestimação em subpopulações estigmatizadas com baixa visibilidade social, como mulheres fizeram aborto provocado. O abortamento provocado é uma prática recorrente entre as mulheres no Município do Rio de Janeiro. Novos métodos de estimação indireta podem contribuir para a apreensão mais precisa do evento, considerando o contexto de ilegalidade, e contribuir para formulação de políticas de saúde.

Abstract Cushion plants are life forms with a hemispherical or mat‐like, prostrate canopy well adapted to the extreme conditions of cold regions that have appealed to scientists for their ability to cope with extreme environments in most mountains, arctic, and subantarctic regions of the world. They can buffer the effects of low temperature and drought and improve soil conditions, which makes them notable facilitator species. Living at the edge in the Atacama Desert is one such species, Azorella compacta (yareta or llareta), in the Apiaceae family that can reach much over 6 m (~20 ft) in diameter with a mat‐like shape that tends to hemispherical growth form. Azorella compacta can be found in the dry Puna system, which spreads from northern Chile and Argentina to southern Peru and western Bolivia, between 3800 and 5200 m elevation, making it one of the woody plant species occurring at highest elevations in the world. In this deserted edge of the Atacama, nutrient limitation adds to other stressors such as water scarcity and high UV radiation. A compact canopy and the fact that they are embedded in resin prevent beneficiary species from growing within the cushion and condition how senesced leaves decompose inside the canopy. They can reach 3000 yr old and have to deal with episodic disturbance and herbivory events. Plants in such environments may potentially act as microbial refuges, and it could be expected that bacterial endophytes and mycorrhizal fungi have a main role in the functioning of these survival champions.

Abstract Background Arterial stiffness is emerging as an independent risk factor for the development of chronic kidney disease. The sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which lower serum glucose by inhibiting SGLT2-mediated glucose reabsorption in renal proximal tubules, have shown promise in reducing arterial stiffness and the risk of cardiovascular and kidney disease in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Since hyperglycemia contributes to arterial stiffness, we hypothesized that the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin (EMPA) would improve endothelial function, reduce aortic stiffness, and attenuate kidney disease by lowering hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetic female mice (db/db). Materials/methods Ten-week-old female wild-type control (C57BLKS/J) and db/db (BKS.Cg-Dock7m+/+Leprdb/J) mice were divided into three groups: lean untreated controls (CkC, n = 17), untreated db/db (DbC, n = 19) and EMPA-treated db/db mice (DbE, n = 19). EMPA was mixed with normal mouse chow at a concentration to deliver 10 mg kg−1 day−1, and fed for 5 weeks, initiated at 11 weeks of age. Results Compared to CkC, DbC showed increased glucose levels, blood pressure, aortic and endothelial cell stiffness, and impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation. Furthermore, DbC exhibited impaired activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, increased renal resistivity and pulsatility indexes, enhanced renal expression of advanced glycation end products, and periarterial and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. EMPA promoted glycosuria and blunted these vascular and renal impairments, without affecting increases in blood pressure. In addition, expression of “reversion inducing cysteine rich protein with Kazal motifs” (RECK), an anti-fibrotic mediator, was significantly suppressed in DbC kidneys and partially restored by EMPA. Confirming the in vivo data, EMPA reversed high glucose-induced RECK suppression in human proximal tubule cells. Conclusions Empagliflozin ameliorates kidney injury in type 2 diabetic female mice by promoting glycosuria, and possibly by reducing systemic and renal artery stiffness, and reversing RECK suppression.

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy has become the standard of care for lymph node staging in melanoma and the most important predictor of survival in clinically node-negative disease. Previous guidelines recommend completion lymph node dissection (CLND) in cases of positive SLN; however, the lymph nodes recovered during CLND are only positive in a minority of these cases. Recent evidence suggests that conservative management (i.e. observation) has similar outcomes compared to CLND. We sought to review the most current literature regarding the management of SLN in metastatic melanoma and to discuss potential future directions.

Onychomycosis induced by Candida spp. has several limitations regarding its treatment. Nail lacquers display the potential to overcome these drawbacks by providing therapeutic compliance and increasing local drug bioavailability. Thus, this work aimed to produce a nail lacquer loaded with Amphotericin B (AmB) and evaluate its performance. The AmB-loaded nail lacquer was produced and preliminarily characterized. An AmB quantification method was developed. Stability, drug release, permeability and anti-Candida activity assays were conducted. The analytical method validation met the acceptance criteria. The drug loading efficiency was 100% (0.02 mg/g of total product), whereas the AmB stability was limited to ≅7 days (≅90% remaining). The nail lacquer displayed a drying time of 187 s, non-volatile content of around 20%w/w, water-resistance of approximately 2%w/w of weight loss and satisfactory in vitro adhesion. Moreover, the in vitro antifungal activity against different Candida spp. strains was confirmed. The AmB release and the ex vivo permeability studies revealed that AmB leaves the lacquer and permeates the nail matrix in 47.76 ± 0.07% over 24 h. In conclusion, AmB-loaded nail lacquer shows itself as a promising extemporaneous dosage form with remarkable anti-Candida activity related to onychomycosis.

Metabolic reprogramming is considered one of the hallmarks in cancer and is characterized by increased glycolysis and lactate production, even in the presence of oxygen, which leads the cancer cells to a process called “aerobic glycolysis” or “Warburg effect”. The E6 and E7 oncoproteins of human papillomavirus 16 (HPV 16) favor the Warburg effect through their interaction with a molecule that regulates cellular metabolism, such as p53, retinoblastoma protein (pRb), c-Myc, and hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). Besides, the impact of the E6 and E7 variants of HPV 16 on metabolic reprogramming through proteins such as HIF-1α may be related to their oncogenicity by favoring cellular metabolism modifications to satisfy the energy demands necessary for viral persistence and cancer development. This review will discuss the role of HPV 16 E6 and E7 variants in metabolic reprogramming and their contribution to developing and preserving the malignant phenotype of cancers associated with HPV 16 infection.

Oxidative stress causes several chronic diseases including cancer. Some chemotherapeutic agents are not selective against tumor cells, causing oxidative stress in non-tumor cells. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of acetone extract of Ficus crocata(Miq.) Mart. ex Miq. (F. crocata) leaves (Ace-EFc) on cervical cancer cells, as well as its protective effect on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced lipoperoxidation and cytotoxicity in non-tumor HaCaT cells. Antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH and ABTS radicals. Cell viability and lipoperoxidation were determined with MTT and 1-methyl-2-phenylindole assays, respectively. A model of H2O2-induced cytotoxicity and oxidative damage in HaCaT cells was established. HaCaT cells were exposed to the extract before or after exposure to H2O2, and oxidative damage and cell viability were evaluated. Ace-EFc inhibited the DPPH and ABTS radicals and showed a cytotoxic effect on SiHa and HeLa cells. Furthermore, the extract treatment had a protective effect on hydrogen peroxide-induced lipoperoxidation and cytotoxicity, avoiding the increase in MalonDiAldehyde (MDA) levels and the decrease in cell viability (p < 0.001). These results suggest that the metabolites of F. crocata leaves possess antioxidant and cytoprotective activity against oxidative damage. Thus, they could be useful for protecting cells from conditions that cause oxidative stress.

A straightforward family of one-point multiple-root iterative methods is introduced. The family is generated using the technique of weight functions. The order of convergence of the family is determined in its convergence analysis, which shows the constraints that the weight function must satisfy to achieve order three. In this sense, a family of iterative methods can be obtained with a suitable design of the weight function. That is, an iterative algorithm that depends on one or more parameters is designed. This family of iterative methods, starting with proper initial estimations, generates a sequence of approximations to the solution of a problem. A dynamical analysis is also included in the manuscript to study the long-term behavior of the family depending on the parameter value and the initial guess considered. This analysis reveals the good properties of the family for a wide range of values of the parameter. In addition, a numerical test on academic and engineering multiple-root functions is performed.

Superfruit guava (Psidium guajava L.) is one of the healthiest fruits due to its high antioxidant dietary fiber and vitamin content. However, the growth and development of this plant are severely affected by salinity stress, mostly at the seedling stage. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding, endogenous, highly conserved RNA molecules that play key regulatory roles in plant development, organ morphogenesis, and stress response signaling. In this study, applying computational approaches and following high stringent filtering criteria, a total of 40 potential microRNAs belonging to 19 families were characterized from guava. The identified miRNA precursors formed stable stem-loop structures and exhibited high sequence conservation among diverse and evolutionarily distant plant species. Differential expression pattern of seven selected guava miRNAs (pgu-miR156f-5p, pgu-miR160c-5p, pgu-miR162-3p, pgu-miR164b-5p, pgu-miR166t, pgu-miR167a-5p, and pgu-miR390b-5p) were recorded under salinity stress and pgu-miR162-3p, pgu-miR164b-5p as well as pgu-miR166t were found to be the most affected ones. Using the psRNATarget tool, a total of 49 potential target transcripts of the characterized guava miRNAs were identified in this study which are mostly involved in metabolic pathways, cellular development, and stress response signaling. A biological network has also been constructed to understand the miRNA mediated gene regulation using the minimum free energy (MFE) values of the miRNA-target interaction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of guava miRNAs and their targets.
