In this study, high pressure synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction is used to investigate the compression of two high pressure polymorphs of \ce{CrSb2}. The first is the \ce{CuAl2}-type polymorph with an eight-fold coordinated Cr, which can be quenched to ambient conditions from high-pressure high-temperature conditions. The second is the recently discovered \ce{MoP2}-type polymorph, which is induced by compression at room temperature, with a seven-fold coordinated Cr. Here, the assigned structure is unambiguously confirmed by solving it from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the electrical properties of the \ce{MoP2}-type polymorph were investigated theoretically and the resistance calculations under pressure were accompanied by resistance measurements under high pressure on a single crystal of \ce{CrSb2}. The calculated electronic band structure for the \ce{MoP2}-type phase is discussed and we show that the polymorph is semimetallic and possesses type-I Weyl points. No further phase transitions were observed for the \ce{CuAl2}-type structure up to 50 GPa and 40 GPa for the \ce{MoP2}-type structure. Even though the \ce{CuAl2}-phase has the highest coordination number of Cr, it was found to be less compressible than the \ce{MoP2}-phase having a seven-fold coordinated Cr, which was attributed to the longer Cr-Sb distance in the \ce{CuAl2}-type phase. The discovery of a type-I Weyl semimetallic phase in \ce{CrSb2} opens up for discovering other Weyl semimetals in the transition metal di-pnictides under high pressure., Comment: 20 pages, 4 tables, 6 figures

Polytypism of incommensurately modulated structures was hitherto unobserved. Here, we found the phenomenon in simple halogen systems of bromine and iodine upon molecular dissociation in the solids under pressure. Single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction in laser heated diamond anvil cells pressurised up to 112 GPa revealed a number of allotropes of bromine and iodine including polytypes of Br-III{\gamma} (Fmmm(00{\gamma})s00) with {\gamma} varying within 0.18 to 0.3.

Nitrogen represents an archetypal example of material exhibiting a pressure driven transformation from molecular to polymeric state. Detailed investigations of such transformations are challenging because of a large kinetic barrier between molecular and polymeric structures, making the transformation largely dependent on kinetic stimuli. In the case of nitrogen, additional complications occur due to the rich polymorphism in the vicinity of the transition. Here, we report the observation of both molecular (\theta) and polymeric (BP) phases, crystallized upon temperature quenching of fluid nitrogen to room temperature at 97-114 GPa. Synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles theoretical calculations have been used for diagnostics of the phases and determination of their structure and stability. Molecular \theta-nitrogen is the most stable among molecular phases bordering the stability field of polymeric phases, partially settling a previously noted discrepancy between theory and experiment concerning the thermodynamic stability limit of molecular phases., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

We present detailed studies of the superconductivity in high-pressure H3S. X-ray diffraction measurements show that cubic Im-3m H3S was synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen donor ammonia borane (NH3BH3). Our electrical transport measurements confirm superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc = 197 K at 153 GPa. From the analysis of both the normal state resistivity and the slope of the critical field, we conclude that the superconductivity is described by clean-limit behaviour. A significant broadening of the resistive transition in finite magnetic field is found, as expected for superconductors. We identify a linear temperature-over-field scaling of the resistance at the superconducting transition which is not described by existing theories.

More than thirty years ago, carbon nitrides featuring 3D frameworks of tetrahedral CN4 units were identified as one of the great aspirations of materials science, expected to have a hardness greater than or comparable to diamond. Since then, no unambiguous experimental evidence of their existence has been delivered. Here, we report the high-pressure high-temperature synthesis of the long-sought-after covalent carbon nitrides, tI14-C3N4, hP126-C3N4, and tI24-CN2, in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Their structures were solved and refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In these solids, carbon atoms, all sp3-hybridized, and nitrogen atoms are fully saturated, forming four and three covalent bonds, respectively, leading to three-dimensional arrangements of corner-sharing CN4 tetrahedra. These carbon nitrides are ultra-incompressible, with hP126-C3N4 and tI24-CN2 even rivalling diamond's incompressibility, and superhard. These novel compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions in crystalline form and chemically stable in air. Being wide-band gap semiconductors with intriguing features in their electronic structure, they are expected to exhibit multiple exceptional functionalities besides their mechanical properties, opening new perspectives for materials science.

The lanthanum-hydrogen system has attracted significant attention following the report of superconductivity in LaH10 at near-ambient temperatures and high pressures. Here, we present the results of our single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies on this system, supported by density functional theory calculations, which reveal an unexpected chemical and structural diversity of lanthanum hydrides synthesized in the range of 50 to 180 GPa. Seven lanthanum hydrides were produced, LaH3, LaH~4, LaH4+{\delta}, La4H23, LaH6+{\delta}, LaH9+{\delta}, and LaH10+{\delta}, and the atomic coordinates of lanthanum in their structures determined. The regularities in rare-earth element hydrides unveiled here provide clues to guide the search for other synthesizable hydrides and candidate high-temperature superconductors. The hydrogen content variability in lanthanum hydrides and the samples' phase heterogeneity underline the challenges related to assessing potentially superconducting phase(s) and the nature of electronic transitions in high-pressure hydrides.

Non-metal nitrides are an exciting field of chemistry, featuring a significant number of compounds that can possess outstanding material properties. This characteristic relies on maximizing the number of strong covalent bonds, with crosslinked XN6 octahedra frameworks being particularly intriguing. In this study, the phosphorus-nitrogen system was studied up to 137 GPa in laser-heated diamond anvil cells and three previously unobserved phases were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. Delta-P3N5 and PN2 were found to form at 72 and 134 GPa, respectively, and both feature dense 3D networks of the so far elusive PN6 units. The two are ultra-incompressible, having a bulk modulus of K0 = 322 GPa for delta-P3N5 and K0 = 339 GPa for PN2. Upon decompression below 7 GPa, delta-P3N5 undergoes a transformation into a novel alpha'-P3N5 solid, stable at ambient conditions, that has a unique structure type based on PN4 tetrahedra. The formation of alpha'-P3N5 underlines that a phase space otherwise inaccessible can be explored through high-pressure formed phases.

Recent high-pressure synthesis of pentazolates and subsequent stabilization of the aromatic [N5]- anion at atmospheric pressure had an immense impact on nitrogen chemistry. Here, we present the first synthesis of an aromatic hexazine [N6]4- anion realized in high-pressure potassium nitride K9N56 at 46 and 61 GPa. The extremely complex structure of K9N56 was solved based on synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and corroborated by density functional theory calculations. This result resolves a long-standing question of the aromatic hexazine stability and the possibility of its synthesis.

A gasket is an important constituent of a diamond anvil cell (DAC) assembly, responsible for the sample chamber stability at extreme conditions for x-ray diffraction studies. In this work, we studied the performance of gaskets made of metallic glass Fe0.79Si0.07B0.14 in a number of high-pressure x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments in DACs equipped with conventional and toroidal-shape diamond anvils. The experiments were conducted in either uniaxial or radial geometry with x-ray beams of micron to sub-micron size. We report that the Fe0.79Si0.07B0.14 metallic glass gaskets offered stable sample environment under compression exceeding one megabar in all XRD experiments described here, even in those involving inter- or small-molecule gases (e.g. Ne, H2) used as pressure transmitting media or in those with laser heating in a DAC. These emphasize the material's importance for a great number of delicate experiments conducted under extreme conditions. Our results indicate that the application of Fe0.79Si0.07B0.14 metallic glass gaskets in XRD experiments of both uniaxial and radial geometries substantially improves the signal-to-noise ratio in comparison to that with conventional gaskets made of Re, W, steel or other crystalline metals.

Charged nitrogen dimers are ubiquitous in high-pressure binary metal-nitrogen systems. They are known to possess integer formal charges x varying from one through four. Here, we present the investigation of the binary alkali- and alkaline earth metal-nitrogen systems, Na-N, Ca-N, Sr-N, Ba-N to 70 GPa. We report on compounds-Na3(N2)4, Ca3(N2)4, Sr3(N2)4, and Ba(N2)3-featuring charged nitrogen dimers with paradigm-breaking non-integer charges, x = 0.67, 0.75 and 1.5. The metallic nature of all four compounds is deduced from ab initio calculations. The conduction electrons occupy the pi* antibonding orbitals of the charged nitrogen dimers that results in anion-driven metallicity. Delocalization of these electrons over the pi* antibonding states enables the non-integer electron count of the dinitrogen species. Anion-driven metallicity is expected to be found among a variety of compounds with homoatomic anions (e.g., polynitrides, carbides, and oxides), with the conduction electrons playing a decisive role in their properties.

High pressure chemistry is known to inspire the creation of unexpected new classes of compounds with exceptional properties. Here we report the synthesis at ~90 GPa of novel beryllium polynitrides, monoclinic and triclinic BeN4. The triclinic phase, upon decompression to ambient conditions, transforms into a compound with atomic-thick BeN4 layers interconnected via weak van der Waals bonds consisting of polyacetylene-like nitrogen chains with conjugated {\pi}-systems and Be atoms in square-planar coordination. Theoretical calculations for a single BeN4 layer show that its electronic lattice is described by a slightly distorted honeycomb structure reminiscent of the graphene lattice and the presence of Dirac points in the electronic band structure at the Fermi level. The BeN4 layer, i.e. beryllonitrene, represents a qualitatively new class of 2D materials that can be built of a metal atom and polymeric nitrogen chains and host anisotropic Dirac fermions.

Atomic and electronic structures of Cu2H and CuH have been investigated by high pressure NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and ab-initio calculations. Metallic Cu2H was synthesized at a pressure of 40 GPa, and semi-metallic CuH at 90 GPa, found stable up to 160 GPa. Experiments and computations suggest the formation of a metallic 1H-sublattice as well as a high 1H mobility of ~10-7 cm2/s in Cu2H. Comparison of Cu2H and FeH data suggests that deviations from Fermi gas behavior, formation of conductive hydrogen networks, and high 1H mobility could be common features of metal hydrides.

Studies of polynitrogen phases are of great interest for fundamental science and for the design of novel high energy density materials. Laser heating of pure nitrogen at 140 GPa in a diamond anvil cell led to the synthesis of a polymeric nitrogen allotrope with the black phosphorus structure, bp-N. The structure was identified in situ using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and further studied by Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The discovery of bp-N brings nitrogen in line with heavier pnictogen elements, resolves incongruities regarding polymeric nitrogen phases and provides insights into polynitrogen arrangements at extreme densities.

Laser heating of rhenium in a diamond anvil cell to 3000 K at about 200 GPa results in formation of two previously unknown rhenium carbides, hexagonal WC-type structured ReC and orthorhombic TiSi2-type structured ReC2. The Re-C slid solution formed at multimegabar pressure has the carbon content of ca. 20 at%. Unexpectedly long C-C distances (ca. 1.76-1.85 A) in 'graphene-like' carbon nets in the structure of ReC2 cannot be explained by a simple covalent bonding between carbon atoms and suggest that at very high pressures the mechanism of interaction between carbon atoms in inorganic compounds may be different from that considered so far.

High pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is known to uncover behavior of matter at extreme conditions. However, significant maintenance demands, space requirements and high costs of superconducting magnets render its application unfeasible for regular modern high pressure laboratories. Here, we present a table-top NMR system based on permanent Halbach magnet arrays with dimensions of 25 cm diameter and 4 cm height. At the highest field of 1013 mT, 1H-NMR spectra of Ice VII have been recorded at 25 GPa and ambient temperature. The table-top NMR system can be used together with double sided laser heating set-ups. Feasibility of high-pressure high-temperature NMR was demonstrated by collecting 1H-NMR spectra of H2O at 25 GPa and 1063(50) K. We found that the change in signal intensity in laser-heated NMR diamond anvil cell yields a convenient way for temperature measurements.

Here we report the synthesis of metallic, ultraincompressible (bulk modulus $K_{0}$ = 428(10) GPa) and very hard (nanoindentation hardness 36.7(8) GPa) rhenium (V) nitride pernitride Re$_{2}$(N$_{2}$)N$_{2}$. While the empirical chemical formula of the compound, ReN$_{2}$, is the same as for other known transition metals pernitrides, e.g. IrN$_{2}$, PtN$_{2}$, PdN$_{2}$ and OsN$_{2}$, its crystal chemistry is unique. The known pernitrides of transition metals consist of a metal in the oxidation state +IV and pernitride anions N$_{2}^{4-}$. ReN$_{2}$ contains both pernitride N$_{2}^{4-}$ and discrete N$^{3-}$ anions, which explains its exceptional properties. Moreover, in the original experimental synthesis of Re$_{2}$(N$_{2}$)N$_{2}$ performed in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell via a direct reaction between rhenium and nitrogen at pressures from 40 to 90 GPa we observed that the material was recoverable at ambient conditions. Consequently, we developed a route to scale up its synthesis through a reaction between rhenium and ammonium azide, NH$_{4}$N$_{3}$, in a large-volume press at 33 GPa. Our work resulted not only in a discovery of a novel material with unusual crystal chemistry and a set of properties attractive for potential applications, but also demonstrated a feasibility of surmounting conceptions common in material sciences.

Knowledge of the behavior of hydrogen in metal hydrides is the key for understanding their electronic properties. So far, no experimental methods exist to access these properties beyond 100 GPa, where high-Tc superconductivity emerges. Here, we present an 1H-NMR study of cubic FeH up to 200GPa. We observe a distinct deviation from the ideal metallic behavior between 64 and 110 GPa that suggests pressure-induced H-H interactions. Accompanying ab-initio calculations support this interpretation, as they reveal the formation of an intercalating sublattice of electron density, which enhances the hydrogen contribution to the electronic density of states at the Fermi level. This study shows that pressure induced H-H interactions can occur in metal hydrides at much lower compression and larger H-H distances than previously thought and stimulates an alternative pathway in the search for novel high-temperature superconductors., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures
