Athletic buoyancy is the ability to handle everyday challenges in sports, though little research has been conducted. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine intrapersonal and interpersonal factors related to athletic buoyancy, as well as a potential outcome variable. Collegiate club sport athletes (N = 239) completed a questionnaire assessing predictors (fear of failure, anxiety, sport enjoyment, enthusiastic commitment), an outcome variable (intentions to continue sport participation), a mediator (athletic buoyancy), and a moderator (social support) between the predictors and both athletic buoyancy and intentions. Results indicated that athletic buoyancy was not a mediator; however, anxiety and fear of failure were significant, negative predictors of athletic buoyancy. Social support moderated the enthusiastic commitment-intentions relationship, and the fear of failure-athletic buoyancy relationship, where athletes with higher social support reported a greater negative impact of fear of failure on athletic buoyancy. Although failures and other experiences can capture attention and motivate organizations to learn and improve, this knowledge is not always retained over time, leaving some organizations dangerously prone to repeat the same mistakes repeatedly. We adapt theory on the attention-based view—and specifically on attentional engagement and vigilance—to shed new light on this process. While prior research has examined how competing events may draw attention away, our theory leads us to consider the circumstances that will motivate employees to maintain attention on learning from failure that has already occurred. Our framework examines the conditions that preserve attention to past failures by increasing the perception that related issues exist elsewhere, serving as continuing reminders of or cues about the failure when attention begins to drift away. We find support for related hypotheses involving a failure's complexity, the firm's culpability, and the ongoing use of routines related to those involved in the failure. Our findings contribute to the attention-based view by developing theory about attentional engagement and vigilance and by emphasizing the conditions that can keep attention focused on, rather drawn away from, past failure. Marketers commonly use ads that associate brands with success in persuasive communications. Yet, these ads may not be the most effective way to promote brands, particularly masculine brands. The current research examines when and why failure messaging can be an effective promotional approach. Across eight studies using both observational and experimental data from field and lab settings, the authors demonstrate that experiences of failure in achievement contexts, and ads that employ failure (vs. success) messaging, are more effective in promoting masculine but not feminine or neutral brands. An increase in consumers' hostility mediates these effects. Feminine brands that employ aggressive branding cues (e.g., the color red) can also benefit from failure messaging. Additionally, the benefits of failure messaging are enhanced when people do (vs. do not) take responsibility for their failures, and this moderating effect is intensified (weakened) when failures are attributed to unstable (stable) causes. In recent years, the way that maintenance is carried out has evolved due to the incorporation of digital tools and Industry 4.0 concepts. By connecting to and communicating with their production system, companies can now gather information about the current and future health of the equipment, enabling more efficient control through a process called predictive maintenance (PdM). The goal of PdM is to reduce unplanned downtimes and proactively address maintenance needs before failures occur. However, it can be challenging for industrial practitioners to implement an intelligent maintenance system that effectively manages data. This paper presents a methodology for developing and implementing a PdM system in the automotive industry, using open standards and scalable data management capabilities. This article focuses on a specific type of coherent system in which, when the coherent system fails, either no active component remains or the remaining active components are connected in parallel. Roy and Gupta (2023) also considered the same type of coherent systems. We observe the restart of such a coherent system using two cold standby components. In our study, standbys are not placed into action simultaneously. They are put into action one by one. We compute the reliability function of the considered coherent system, which is equipped with two cold standby components. In addition, we show that when we use a stronger standby component (in the sense of failure rate order) at first, we get a longer system lifetime. Time-to-event data are very common in medical applications. Regression models have been developed on such data especially in the field of survival analysis. Kernels are used to handle even more complicated and enormous quantities of medical data by injecting non-linearity into linear models. In this study, a Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) method has been proposed to optimize survival outcomes under the Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) model, a useful alternative to the Proportional Hazards (PH) frailty model. In other words, a survival parametric regression framework has been presented for clinical data to effectively integrate kernel learning with AFT model using a gradient descent optimization strategy. This methodology involves applying four different parametric models, evaluated using 19 distinct kernels to extract the best fitting scenario. This culminated in a sophisticated strategy that combined these kernels through MKL. We conducted a comparison between the Frailty model and MKL due to their shared fundamental properties. The models were assessed using the Concordance index (C-index) and Brier score (B-score). Each model was tested on both a case study and a replicated/independent dataset. This study investigates the impact of active learning instruction on the motivational orientation of pre-service language teachers. The data were collected by using the AGQ-R and the StRIP questionnaire, and analyzed through repeated measures of MANOVAs and correlation coefficient. Pre-service language teachers reported a higher approach goal orientation emphasizing the desire to succeed rather than avoidance goal orientation, i.e., the fear of failure. In terms of classroom practices, the participants report having experienced all types of instruction (passive, active, interactive and constructive) in the language education program. Although the pre-service teachers' perception of instruction as passive is preponderant in this study, it does not necessarily point to a higher use of traditional passive lecture and note taking practices. Regardless of the perceived instruction type, the participants' motivation and engagement remain high, as they report high cognitive and emotional engagement, as well as very high participation and low distraction levels. Regarding correlations, motivation, engagement and active instruction are all highly correlated with each other, as highly motivated and engaged individuals tend to benefit more from active instruction than less motivated students, who chiefly rely on passive instruction for academic success. The results of the study may indicate an emergent need for a careful balance between various teaching strategies and approaches in language education programs in particular, and possibly at tertiary level pedagogy in general. We show that ordinary appointments can act as effective substitutes for hard commitment devices and increase demand for a critical healthcare service, particularly among those with self-control problems. We show this using an experiment that randomly offered HIV testing appointments and hard commitment devices to high-risk men in Malawi. Appointments more than double testing rates, with effects concentrated among those who demand commitment. In contrast, most men who take up hard commitments lose their investments. Appointments overcome commitment problems without the potential drawback of commitment failure, and have the potential to increase demand for healthcare in the developing world. In this research, the mystical experiences of Bayazid Bastami in the narrative of Attar's Tazkira Al -Awaliya were analyzed with a semiotic -semantic approach in order to explain the mechanism and how the meaning is formed in the text in question. In this discourse, Bayezid is cared for and chosen by God before birth. Then, in the process of development, there is an activism that does not reach the goal during austerities, worships, worldly travels and all the actions that are considered valuable actions in the ontology of Islamic mystics, including Attar as the narrator of the text. The outcome of these actions is being; Unsuccessful outcomes and shortcomings, failures and emotional stress, intense desire versus lack of necessity, and complete denial of what is right eventually cause him to dissolve his sense of self, transcend his limits, and unite with existence and God. The stronger and more intense the desire, the more severe the failure resulting from not being able to be and the more meaningful the emotional tension. A meaning that is full of emotion, perception and presence. The feeling and perception of the narrator, sometimes with an external phenomenon and sometimes by confronting the inner world, leads to the emergence of meaning. Some external experiences are the result of adaptation, reflection and some internal experiences are the result of attraction, co - presence and unity. The mention of Bayezid and his ascension is a mirror of the whole view of what mystics call mystical experience. An unexpected event, a passivity that brings with it an outburst of meaning and enthusiasm of the language. The research method is descriptive -analytical. The theoretical approach of the research is based on the theoretical foundations of semiotic -semantic knowledge in the analysis of mystical experiences. The scope of the research includes re -reading and reflecting on the mystical experiences of Bayazid Bastami in the narrative of Attar's Tazkireh Awaliya, which tries to analyze the formation of meaning in an emotional discourse, between the system of action, tension and excitement. Objectives: Tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP) is a common method for post‐laryngectomy speech rehabilitation. Despite its common use, some patients ultimately fail TEP rehabilitation. TEP dysfunction negatively affects quality of life due to poor voice quality and need for repeated interventions to restore TEP function. Occasionally, voice rehabilitation with TEP is completely unsuccessful. We performed a scoping review to characterize the main reasons for total TEP failure, in hopes of guiding selection of optimal TEP candidates. Study design: Scoping review using PubMed of all English language articles from 1990 to 2020 addressing causes of TEP failure. Methods: This scoping review followed the population, intervention, comparison, outcome and study (PICOS) guidelines. Total TEP failure was defined as complete loss or abandonment of TEP voice or tract. A comprehensive search strategy using PubMed's MeSH subject headings and keywords was created. Causes and rates of failure were reviewed. Results: Among 544 peer‐reviewed journal articles reviewed for inclusion. Seventy articles met inclusion criteria, resulting in a total of 4928 TEP voice restoration patients for analysis. 15.2% of these patients had total TEP failure. The most common reasons for failure were dissatisfaction with voice (26.3%), leakage (17.9%), inadequate patient motivation (14.7%), comorbidities (14.2%), stoma problems (11.6%), and abandonment of TEP after dislodgement (10.6%). Conclusion: Common reasons for TEP failure included voice dissatisfaction, leakage, lack of patient motivation, patient comorbidities, and stoma problems. Product development in innovation-driven industries often fails. Although such failures cause new ventures to struggle to raise follow-on investments, some overcome this challenge. Why? Synthesizing insights from the research on signaling and social evaluation theory, we identify how certain resources can mitigate the risk of funding termination for new ventures despite product development failure. Through a longitudinal study of 254 venture capital-funded biotechnology ventures, we show that internal quality signals decrease in their effectiveness while industry endorsement signals increase in their effectiveness as quality signals over time. Collaborative spaces such as fab labs, incubators, and coworking spaces have become a worldwide phenomenon based on their promise of fostering creativity and entrepreneurship. Mature, large organizations have also tried to benefit from this by creating such spaces in-house. This paper studies a failed attempt to create one such space in a large bureaucratic organization. Our study shows that succeeding in actualizing a space for play, creativity, and entrepreneurship in the place of the office requires attention to organizational 'common sense'. With our process perspective and its upgrading of the role of affect, our study's contributions highlight (1) The potential for research in organizational entrepreneurship of an affect-based conceptualization of common sense, which also emphasizes the political, in understanding the failure of entrepreneuring, and (2) The importance of 'spacing' and the space-place dynamics for entrepreneuring in organizations. Active learning Kriging-based Inverse reliability analyses (AK-IRs) is proposed to addresses nonlinear and low-probability failure issues in inverse reliability analysis (IRA). Departing from linear approximations and inverse most probable point (iMPP) calculations, AK-IRs utilizes an active learning Kriging approach with proposed learning functions and discrimination criteria for precise limit state identification. This method focuses training points near the limit state, ensuring precise approximations in complex nonlinear scenarios. By constructing high-precision Kriging models without relying on gradient information, AK-IRs significantly enhances solution efficiency in IRA challenges. Background: The lateral locking plate for the proximal humerus is currently the most commonly used surgical procedure for the treatment of elderly proximal humeral comminuted fractures. Previous studies have found that the rate of postoperative complications in patients of proximal humerus fractures with medial column involvement is relatively high. Through biomechanical methods, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the conventional lateral locking plate fixation along with the addition of the metacarpal supporting plate on the medial column in the treatment for proximal humeral fractures involving the medial column. The goal is to reduce the rate of postoperative internal fixation failure in patients with medial column injury. Methods: Thirty artificial synthetic humerus models are used as experimental samples. A proximal humerus fracture model with medial column injury was created, and then divided into two groups. Group A was fixed with a proximal humerus lateral locking plate (single-plate group). Group B was fixed with a proximal humerus lateral locking plate and a metacarpal supporting plate on the medial column (double-plate group). The failure displacement, stiffness, and strength of the repaired proximal humerus fractures with two different methods were tested under compression at posterior extension of 15°, forward flexion of 15°, and vertical direction. Results: There was no statistical significance in the comparison of the failure displacement of repaired proximal humeral fractures between the two groups under compression at posterior extension of 15° and forward flexion of 15° (P > 0.05). However, the failure displacement of the fracture was longer in single-plate group than in double-plate group under compression at vertical direction (P < 0.05). The double-plate group was better in terms of biomechanical stiffness and strength compared to the single-plate group at all three testing angles (P < 0.05). Conclusions: For patients whose proximal humeral fractures involve the medial column, the addition of a support plate on the medial side of the humerus is recommended along with the lateral locking plate. The double-plate strategy can increase the stability of the medial column of the proximal humerus, and enhance the overall biomechanical property of the repaired proximal humerus. Using definitions of gentrification and examples of place-based artworks and practice, in this article I suggest that in their role in the processes of ‘regeneration’ artists sit on conflicting sides of a debate about who has the right to live in a particular place and the impact of differing powers of mobility. Connecting with Katie Beswick’s position that estate-based artworks may tread a fine line between engagement and ‘art-washing’, I explore how artists could approach work with communities by connecting the aspirational nature of art to residents’ own lives rather than imposing work and practices that do not fully consider the context of an area. Using examples of site-specific and site-responsive artwork on the Heygate Estate and the Alton Estate, both in London, and my own practice exploring place-making and the dual narratives of ‘failure’ and ‘home’, I examine how artists can risk taking narratives of home out of the hands of residents. I argue for the creation of embedded community practices which enable residents to develop a sense of ownership and control, and which highlight the lives and priorities of existing populations of areas threatened by gentrification and displacement. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore how Iranian EFL learners conceptualize writing anxiety and to identify the contributing factors and manifestations of this anxiety within the specific cultural and educational context of Iran. Methods and Materials: The study employed a qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews to collect data from 38 Iranian EFL learners of varying ages and proficiency levels. The grounded theory approach was used to analyze the data, following the stages of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding to identify key themes and sub-themes related to writing anxiety. Findings: The analysis revealed one core category, "EFL Writing Anxiety," under which three main themes were identified: "Physiological Arousal," "Dysfunctional Thoughts," and "Maladaptive Behaviors." The findings indicate that Iranian EFL learners experience significant writing anxiety, influenced by fear of negative evaluation, GPA concerns, cultural emphasis on academic success, and traditional grammar-focused teaching methods. The study also found that cognitive anxiety, driven by high expectations and fear of failure, was the most severe form of anxiety experienced during writing. Conclusion: The study concludes that writing anxiety among Iranian EFL learners is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon influenced by cultural, educational, and psychological factors. Addressing writing anxiety is essential for effective language instruction, and the findings provide valuable insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers to develop strategies to mitigate writing anxiety and improve writing performance in EFL learners. Featured Application: This study shows that working memory training can improve operators' ability to react quickly and make decisions in complex or emergency situations, preventing situational awareness failure and thus improving workplace safety, especially in industries that require high levels of alertness and accurate judgment, such as mining, aviation, and transportation. The digitization of the instrument control system in monitoring operations makes the problem of the operator's situational awareness failure more prominent. In order to better prevent this occurrence, this paper explores the failure of situational awareness from the perspective of cognitive function. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: a working memory training group and a control group. Working memory measurements and coal mining machine monitoring simulation system operation tasks were performed before and after training, and the task performance, situational awareness scale, and EEG index data were recorded. The results showed that, after the training, there was a significant improvement in the task performance of the monitoring operation and the scores of the situational awareness scale, and there were different degrees of activation in the θ, α2, and β1 frequency bands. It was demonstrated that working memory training could help to improve the rapid reaction and decision-making abilities of operators in complex or emergency situations, thus preventing the failure of situational awareness. Real-time condition monitoring of machinery is increasingly being adopted to minimize costs and enhance operational efficiency. By leveraging large-scale data acquisition and intelligent algorithms, failures can be detected and predicted, thereby reducing machine downtime. In this paper, we present a novel hybrid edge–cloud system for detecting rotational bearing failures using accelerometer data. We evaluate both supervised and unsupervised neural network approaches, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations. Supervised models demonstrate high accuracy but require labeled datasets representative of the failures of interesting data that are challenging to acquire due to the rarity of anomalies. Conversely, unsupervised models rely on data from normal operational conditions, which is more readily available. However, these models classify all deviations from normalcy as anomalies, including those unrelated to failure, leading to costly false positives. To address these challenges, we propose a distributed system that integrates supervised and unsupervised learning. A compact unsupervised model is deployed on edge devices near the machines to compress sensor data, which are then transmitted to a centralized cloud-based system. Over time, these data are automatically labeled and used to train a supervised model, improving the accuracy of failure predictions. Our approach enables efficient, scalable failure detection across a fleet of machines while balancing the trade-offs between supervised and unsupervised learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scientific writing is a key feature of academic work often connected to publication pressure, fear of failure, and stress. In addition, there are many academics describing negative experiences of peer-review and feedback. To enhance a positive academic work environment, reduce writer’s block and stress related to sharing and receiving feedback on scientific texts, feedforward can be a useful option. When testing feedforward in a hybrid structured feedforward event with a multidisciplinary supervisor panel, it was evident that feedforward is still experienced as novel and empowering both for PhD students and senior researchers. Research on violence can be debilitating and traumatic. Research fields that explore obvious violence that is largely ignored, minimised or erased can induce epistemic effects that may look like failure or procrastination. That there is very little research on or support for researchers who do research on violence lays bare the ontological presuppositions of the ideal researcher. This article explores what it felt like to do research where ontological erasure was normalised, and places pressure on the presuppositions of the ideal researcher amid scholarship on obvious violence. Debilitation can be a response to epistemic gaslighting, epistemic violence and epistemic trauma and indicate affective refusals and ethical tussling. Being brought to a standstill by research on violence can offer critical epistemic insight that requires using and valuing failure as symptomatic of epistemic relations and refusing the hyper-ableist demands of the academy. ABSTRACT Affect and emotions matter to science learning. They also matter because they are integral to science identity formation and sense of belonging. This study aims to foreground the epistemic and affective character of laboratory work in higher science education by conceptualizing it as epistemic practice, in which students activate their body and mind in discursive processes of proposing, communicating, and evaluating knowledge. On this conceptualization is an emerging construct, “epistemic affect,” which refers to how one feels when engaging with epistemic practices. Several methods were used to provide triangulated evidence for student learning processes and lived experiences in the chemistry laboratory. Students were observed and interviewed using custom protocols based on previously validated works. The empirical materials consist of audio recordings and transcripts of focus group interviews, audio and video recordings of students doing an experiment in analytical chemistry, verbatim transcripts of utterances and non‐verbal cues, as well as instructional artifacts (laboratory manuals, textbooks, and reports). Key findings from the study reveal a range of epistemic emotions experienced by students, including curiosity, frustration, and joy, which are intertwined with their engagement in experimental work and exploration of scientific principles. The study also identifies affective constructs such as confidence, pride, and humility, which contribute to students’ identity development within the context of laboratory‐related epistemic practices. These affective experiences are situated in the embodied nature of laboratory work, where failures and mistakes are common, but also serve as opportunities for learning. The research underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing the affective dimensions of learning in the chemistry laboratory. It suggests that fostering positive epistemic emotions and resolving negative ones can enhance students’ learning experiences and engagement with science. Success in participatory organisational interventions is often viewed as improvements in employee wellbeing. In this debate paper, we argue that we need to move beyond relying solely on the scientific evaluation, focusing on improvements in working conditions and employee wellbeing as the criteria for success. We suggest that we also need to explore whether an intervention is seen as a success for, and by, organisational members. Second, we argue that to determine a participatory organisational intervention’s success, we need not only to focus on improved working conditions and employee wellbeing, but we also need to assess whether the participating organisation has developed their change capability, i.e. whether organisational members will be able to continually go through the participatory process and develop solutions for improving working conditions and employee wellbeing. Only if such capability has been developed are we likely to see a sustainable effect of the intervention. We build on sensemaking theory and argue that the participatory process provides stimuli and cues that organisational members translate into cognitive schemata that lead to conclusions about whether the intervention can be viewed as a success or a failure and that such sensemaking processes may be crucial in developing organisational members’ change capability. Student suicide ideation increased globally during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. There is scarce literature addressing suicide ideation during global health crises. Therefore, this study investigates prevalence and predictors of suicide ideation during India's COVID-19 Second Wave. We also examine the 3-Step Theory's assertion that both pain and hopelessness are necessary to have suicidal thoughts. Sample recruitment was through an online anonymous questionnaire. Inclusion criteria included students aged 18 or older, living in India during the time of the study (N = 535). Data collection was through the online questionnaire. Three categories of variables were investigated as potential predictors of suicide ideation: Sociodemographic (e.g., age, gender, education, economic status), COVID-19-specific (e.g., online classes, fear of virus contagion, vaccination status) and Clinical (e.g., sad mood, fear, loneliness, hopelessness). Data analysis (using SPSS-26) included descriptive statistics for describing data characteristics, Spearman Rho Correlation (assess the strength and direction of association between variables), and Binary Logistic Regression to help identify predictors of suicide ideation. Ordinal variables were measured using Likert scales with some recoded into binomial variables for the Regression analysis. Clinical variables predicted suicidal ideation, including fear of failure (OR = 4.17, 95% CI:2.51–6.94; p <.001), sleep disturbance (OR = 3.04, CI:1.67–5.52; p <.001), loneliness (OR = 2.77, CI:1.21–6.32; p <.01), sadness (O = 2.89, CI:1.59–5.32), and loss of interest (OR = 2.60, CI:1.37–4.93). Suicidal thoughts were reported by 48.7% of the student-participants. The Three-Step Theory was partially supported, as students feeling psychological pain but not hopelessness still reported suicidal ideation. Anticipating future global health crises, policy-supported mental health mitigation strategies are critically needed for youth, designed to reduce suicidal ideation, enhance resiliency, and to foster mental skills. Anonymous communication is crucial for preserving user privacy in various applications, such as anonymous browsing, secure online payments, and electronic voting. However, current systems face significant challenges related to robustness, fault tolerance, and efficient communication management. This paper introduces SRFACS (Secure and Robust Framework for Anonymous Communication Systems), designed to address these issues by integrating advanced cryptographic techniques with a structured communication framework. Traditional anonymous communication systems usually lack sufficient fault tolerance, making them vulnerable to node failures, especially in asynchronous environments. In order to overcome these limitations and ensure that the system can keep running in the event of node failure (especially in an asynchronous environment), SRFACS integrates an improved asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (ABFT) protocol. We use this protocol to expand the traditional single communication node into a structured node group, and handle up to (n − 1)/3 faulty nodes in these groups, so as to enhance fault tolerance and maintain continuous operation. To efficiently manage inter-group communication, SRFACS utilizes leader nodes to coordinate and streamline the communication processes. To mitigate the risks associated with leader failures, we have implemented an efficient leader change protocol that promptly replaces defective leaders, ensuring uninterrupted system performance. Additionally, to prevent erroneous leader actions from compromising the system, we have introduced an advanced multi-signature scheme. This approach secures communication by requiring multiple signatures for verification processes. Furthermore, we have implemented a reputation incentive mechanism to encourage nodes to maintain optimal performance and avoid malicious behavior. This mechanism evaluates nodes according to their past activities and reliability to achieve dynamic updates of SRFACS node groups. While neurofeedback represents a promising tool for neuroscience and a brain self-regulation approach to psychological rehabilitation, the field faces several problems and challenges. Current research has shown great variability and even failure among human participants in learning to self-regulate target features of brain activity with neurofeedback. A better understanding of cognitive mechanisms, psychological factors and neural substrates underlying self-regulation might help improve neurofeedback's scientific and clinical practices. This article reviews the current understanding of the neural mechanisms of brain self-regulation by drawing on findings from human and animal studies in neurofeedback, brain–computer/machine interfaces and neuroprosthetics. In this article, we look closer at the following topics: cognitive processes and psychophysiological factors affecting self-regulation, theoretical models and neural substrates underlying self-regulation, and finally, we provide an outlook on the outstanding gaps in knowledge and technical challenges. Due to constant loads, gear wear, and harsh working conditions, gearboxes are subject to fault occurrences. Faults in the gearbox can cause damage to the engine components, create unnecessary noise, degrade efficiency, and impact power transfer. Hence, the detection of faults at an early stage is highly necessary. In this work, an effort was made to use transfer learning to identify gear failures under five gear conditions—healthy condition, 25% defect, 50% defect, 75% defect, and 100% defect—and three load conditions—no load, T1 = 9.6, and T2 = 13.3 Nm. Vibration signals were collected for various gear and load conditions using an accelerometer mounted on the casing of the gearbox. The load was applied using an eddy current dynamometer on the output shaft of the engine. The obtained vibration signals were processed and stored as vibration radar plots. Residual network (ResNet)‐50, GoogLenet, Visual Geometry Group 16 (VGG‐16), and AlexNet were the network models used for transfer learning in this study. Hyperparameters, including learning rate, optimizer, train‐test split ratio, batch size, and epochs, were varied in order to achieve the highest classification accuracy for each pretrained network. In the Compensatory-Dissociative Online Gaming (C-DOG; Giardina et al., 2024) model, we proposed a continuum from compensatory to dissociative gaming involvement. This continuum represents different degrees of integration between physical and virtual environments with three core processes – Active Escapism, Escape, and Dissociation – and two peripheral processes – Gaming-Related Relaxation and Body-Mind Detachment. Here, we developed and tested a multidimensional measure based on this model. We capitalized on existing items for measuring escapism and dissociation and we generated new items consistent with the hypothesized model dimensions. A total of 54 items were administered to 1,176 online gamers playing different game genres, together with measures of problematic gaming, passion for gaming, and other psychological distress indicators. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses yielded a six-factor, 36-item structure, with multiple hierarchical regression analyses highlighting unique associations with other psychological constructs assessed. The following factors were identified: (1) Emotional Displacement - redirection of negative emotion into the game with associated relaxation; (2) Absorption - detachment of the player from time and space while gaming; (3) Active Escapism - simulative use of the game to compensate for lack of self-confidence in reaching physical life objectives; (4) Virtual Withdrawal – maladaptive gaming to balance impaired social functioning, predicted by traumatic experiences and pervasive depression; (5) Dissociative Regulation - dysfunctional level of engagement associated with excessive anxiety; (6) Failure Escape - problematic avoidance via gaming related to fear of future failures. This article examines the role of leadership development interventions in pre-empting leader derailments. The research literature suggests that derailments are not only commonplace but associated with a range of significant costs, from financial, to mental health, to morale, to employee turnover, to missed opportunities. Given these costly consequences, this article seeks to answer the question: "Can leadership development—especially at early managerial-career stages and during transitions—play a significant role in mitigating leader derailments?" Research suggests that the majority of leadership failures occur—or are more visible—at senior organizational levels. This begs the question of whether development interventions earlier in a leader's career might have pre-empted their later failure. What if the field of leadership development were to adopt a 'preventative medicine' model in which pre-empting derailments was the focus rather than 'fixing' leaders as they are derailing? Moreover, there appears to be an overreliance on coaching as the intervention of choice. What if the field were to leverage a broader range of development interventions beyond coaching to ensure a greater probability of minimizing derailments? This study focuses on the underlying causes of aspirations failure among young children of Bangladesh's tea workers and how this aspirations failure hinders their future career plans and entraps them in poverty. Drawing on Appadurai's theorisation of the capacity to aspire, Ray's aspiration window and aspiration gap and Boudreau's distinction and habitus, we investigated and explained the root causes of aspirations failure of tea workers' children and its resultant effects on their life. We conducted a qualitative case study of two tea gardens located in greater Sylhet Division in Bangladesh to explore the lived experiences of the research participants employing a triangulation of methods for data collection including in-depth interviews, case studies, and direct observation. The study finds that aspiration failure among tea workers' children is rooted in the structural constraints and other concomitant factors also created due to these constraints, which forces them into poverty traps. To pursue, in the aftermath of, and in the face of the harsh and, at times, disorienting conditions of the present, is to continue with steadfast and reciprocal care. In writing this, I aspire toward personal and collective reflection on that which has been (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing racial and other forms of discrimination) toward that which can be. Honoring movement, the pursuit of care requires an understanding of failure and the prospects of risk(-taking) as well as the responsibility afforded through and with a sense of care. To tangentially encapsulate the epic and disproportionate fails continuously wrought by educational, social, and political systems in the U.S. during these pandemic years, I move between the self and the systems that be. Offering both a wide view and reflections, I seek to shed light on the ways in which those systems and structures can fuel and foster individual feelings and perceptions of failure. Accounting for the histories of disenfranchisement and neglect perpetrated by these larger systems and structures, I attempt to demonstrate the ways in which individuals and smaller collectives move through perceptions of failure toward possibility. Background: The most common therapy for gallstones is laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). How to help young residents avoid bile duct injuries (BDI) during surgery and grasp LC seems to be a paradox. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 145 cases of LC operated by two residents under indocyanine green (ICG)–guided mode or normal LC procedures to illustrate the role of ICG mode in boosting the LC learning curve. The clinic data were analyzed by logistic regression, receiver operator curve tests, Cumulative Sum (CUSUM), and Risk-Adjusted Cumulative Sum (RA-CUSUM) analysis. Results: The operation failure rate is similar. However, operation time under ICG mode is shorter than that under normal mode. The peak at the 49th case represented the normal resident's complete mastery of the surgery, while the peak point of ICG mode appeared at the 36th case in the fitting curve. The most significant cumulative risk (peak point) of operation failure of LC was at the 35th case in ICG LC mode, while it appeared in the 49th in normal LC mode. Conclusions: Owing to the advantage of real-time imaging and the stable success rate of cholangiography, ICG-guided LC helps residents shorten the operation time, boost the learning curve, and manage to control the operation failure rate. This article explores spectator racism across three high-profile professional men's football codes in Australia (Australian Football League, National Rugby League and the A-League). To pursue this goal, the study conducted an online survey from April 2021 to June 2021, securing 2047 responses. Our focus in this article centres on those participants who self-identified as White to gather their insights on racism as they witnessed and understood it being expressed in the context of attending a professional men's football code match in Australia. Applying Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus to theorise why some White spectators overtly express racist language and behaviour, our findings indicated the resilience of Whiteness as a source of power and domination, with many White participants reporting they had witnessed racial bigotry in recent years. Concurrently, many demonstrated anti-racist sensibilities, expressing frustration that change has been limited, if at all. Some participants suggested racism is an individual failing rather than being subject to institutions and community norms. This paper proposes a new approach to the interface between linguistic form and speech acts. The basic idea is to rethink prevailing canonicity assumptions about the inventory of syntactic forms used to perform speech acts. I argue for a new concept of canonicity in that domain, which is based on the following claim: pragmatically unmarked versions of the major speech acts requests, questions, and assertions comply with the socio-pragmatic principle of 'maximize politeness'. According to this principle, speakers try to minimize the risk of failure in achieving the relevant illocutionary goals of individual speech acts, and they can minimize that risk by using unambiguous linguistic forms that express politeness. I illustrate this account for unmarked forms of requests, questions, and assertions in German because in this language, the pragmatically unmarked versions of each of those speech acts can be signaled by dedicated particle elements (bitte 'please' in requests; denn 'then' in questions; and ja 'yes' in assertions). I claim that these particles are an overt realization of a syntactic head of a functional projection that encodes socio-pragmatic meaning in the left periphery of the clause. Here it will briefly be recalled how an enthusiastic and innovative institution builder gained a central place in the making of the new European political science, and how Blondel coupled this with his tireless exploration of new fields of comparative politics, while being at the same time a generous mentor of PhD students and younger scholars and, for many, a great friend. This essay uses attachment and dynamic systems theory to argue that qualities of confusion, despair, and failure in Rebecca Harding Davis's work are aspects of the process of change. Looking at Margret Howth and her short fiction, especially "John Lamar," it shows how Davis's bleak attentions to motion and interaction contain aspects of the implicit relational knowing central to attachment relationships and how they shape her approach to race. In an ideological and aesthetic terrain that does not fall in line with liberal or sentimental approaches to progress, Davis pursues an aesthetic and ethic of attending to compromise, loss, and despair as the grounds of compassion. Study Design. Retrospective review of prospectively collected data. Objective. To identify the risk factors associated with failure to respond to erector spinae plane (ESP) block following minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF). Summary of Background Data. ESP block is an emerging opioid-sparing regional anesthetic that has been shown to reduce immediate postoperative pain and opioid demand following MI-TLIF--however, not all patients who receive ESP blocks perioperatively experience a reduction in immediate postoperative pain. Methods. This was a retrospective review of consecutive patients undergoing one-level MI-TLIF who received ESP blocks by a single anesthesiologist perioperatively at a single institution. ESP blocks were administered in the OR following induction. Failure to respond to ESP block was defined as patients with a first numerical rating scale (NRS) score postsurgery of >5.7 (mean immediate postoperative NRS score of control cohort undergoing MI TLIF without ESP block). Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to identify predictors for failure to respond to ESP block. Results. A total of 134 patients were included (mean age 60.6 yr, 43.3% females). The median and interquartile range (IQR) first pain score postsurgery was 2.5 (0.0-7.5). Forty-nine (36.6%) patients failed to respond to ESP block. In the multivariable regression analysis, several independent predictors for failure to respond to ESP block following MI TLIF were identified: female sex (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.04-5.98, P= 0.040), preoperative opioid use (OR 2.75, 95% CI 1.03-7.30, P= 0.043), anxiety requiring medication (OR 3.83, 95% CI 1.27-11.49, P= 0.017), and hyperlipidemia (OR 3.15, 95% CI 1.31-7.55, P= 0.010). Conclusions. Our study identified several predictors for failure to respond to ESP block following MI TLIF, including female gender, preoperative opioid pain medication use, anxiety, and hyperlipidemia. This article seeks to expand on our understanding of lifting by utilizing the benefits of deep plane release and repositioning. The deep plane is a more logical and natural approach to lifting of the face and neck, lifting along the natural anatomic glide planes. Deep plane face and neck lifting have demonstrated superior results in the authors' experience with less dependence on ancillary measures such as fat grafting or implantation for midface volumization. The deep plane technique allows for the face and neck to be treated and lifted as a single composite unit, providing a more natural and long-lasting result and less distortion of underlying structures (i.e., mimetic muscle function). Among facelift surgeons, there is still debate and discussion over treatment of various regions including submandibular gland prominence, jowling and deepened prejowl sulcus, anterior digastric prominence, and a low hyoid. In this article, given the opportunity to share personal experiences, we seek to provide additional insight on the merits of deep plane release in rhytidectomy and our novel approaches to avoiding surgical failures. The advent of CubeSats, compact satellites with a standardized form factor, has disrupted traditional space research paradigms, fostering innovation and collaboration across academic institutions and industries. Following deployment, CubeSats typically employ magnetorquer rods to initiate the detumbling sequence, gradually reducing the angular velocity before transferring control to reaction wheels for complete spin neutralization. However, this conventional approach entails a substantial spacecraft space requirement, necessitating an alternative and disruptive methodology. Furthermore, considering that approximately 50% of Attitude Determination and Control Subsystems (ADCS) failures are attributed to faults related to the moving parts in reaction wheels, strategies are taken into consideration to address a worst-case scenario of reaction wheels failure. This paper introduces a disruptive approach that uses diverse geometries and a non-unity track width ratio in PCB-integrated magnetorquers with reaction wheels for comprehensive control. We demonstrate the effectiveness of various coil configurations through a series of extensive simulations and establish a systematic framework to select optimal hybrid designs tailored to specific mission requirements. Objective: We explore the idea that inhibitory self‐control and prohedonic emotion regulation may be incompatible concerns. Background: Specifically, we propose that because some forms of self‐control involve denying oneself hedonic pleasures, it may lead to negative affect. Because people may then prioritize emotion regulation over self‐control, negative affect may in turn lead to emotion regulation efforts, specifically the use of emotion regulation strategies, and an increased likelihood of self‐control failure. Method: To explore the relationship between emotion regulation and self‐control in daily life, we conducted a secondary analysis of a 6‐week, 6‐signal‐per‐day ambulatory assessment data set (N = 125 participants with a total of 22,845 completed measurement occasions). Results: Consistent with our predictions, we found that self‐control efforts of resisting a pleasurable desire led to significantly increased subsequent negative affect, which, in turn, led to significantly increased emotion regulation efforts and to significantly more likely self‐control failures. Conclusions: We found evidence for the notion that inhibitory self‐control and prohedonic emotion regulation are, on average, somewhat incompatible concerns. "Reboot," especially NoFap, promotes abstinence from masturbation and/or pornography to treat "pornography addiction," an unrecognized diagnosis. While the intention of Reboot/NoFap is to decrease distress, qualitative studies have consistently suggested that "Reboots" paradoxically cause more distress. The distress appears to occur in response to (1) the abstinence goal, which recasts common sexual behaviors as personal "failures," and (2) problematic and inaccurate Reboot/NoFap forum messaging regarding sexuality and addiction. This preregistered survey asked men about their experience with perceived "relapse" and NoFap forums. Participants reported that their most recent relapse was followed by feeling shameful, worthless, sad, a desire to commit suicide, and other negative emotions. A novel predictor of identifying as a pornography addict in this lower religiosity sample was higher narcissism. Participants reported that NoFap forums contained posts that were misogynist (73.7% of participants), bullying (49.1%), anti-LGBT (42.9%), antisemitic (32.0%), instructing followers to harm or kill themselves (23.5%), or threats to hurt someone else (21.1%). More engagement in NoFap online forums was associated with worse symptoms of erectile dysfunction, depression, anxiety, and more sex negativity. This paper draws on Yu Ying-shih's Zhu Xi's Historical World to reexamine the thought of Toegye. Just as Zhu Xi lived in the so-called "post-Wang Anshi era," under the shadow of repeated literati purges, Toegye"s historical context can similarly be described as the "post-Jo Gwang-jo era" (post-Gi-myo era). Reflecting on the lessons of the Gi-myo literati purges, Toegye proposed the concept of "false learning leads to failure" and, with his emphasis on "practical learning," explored Zhu Xi's letters in depth, advocating that "only with the completion of learning can one take on responsibility." In contrast to Yu Ying-shih's classification of the two paths--"winning the favor of the ruler" and "enlightening the people"--Toegye represents a different model of East Asian Confucian scholar-official: that of the "inheritor of the Confucian orthodoxy." Returning to the historical context, the proposition that "only with the completion of learning (inner cultivation) can one take on responsibility (outer governance)" was not meant to establish a political logic of sequential order or necessary causality. By observing Toegye"s frequent emphasis on his own "incomplete learning" through personal practice, we can better understand that the Confucian concept of "inner cultivation and outer governance" is less a form of blind moral absolutism and more a form of self-criticism and caution directed at those in power. This article critically examines the EU AI Act's attempt to regulate AI-based emotion recognition systems, a key development in the realm of emotional data and mental privacy protection. While the AI Act includes provisions specifically addressing emotion recognition, it falls short of providing meaningful safeguards. The AI Act not only offers limited protection against certain types of emotion recognition systems but also inadvertently legitimises emotional data use that verges on manipulation. Given the AI Act's failure to adequately protect emotional privacy, this article explores the protective capacity of the GDPR with respect to emotional data. While the GDPR offers some welcome safeguards, it remains insufficient in addressing the unique risks posed by emotion recognition technologies. Against this backdrop, the article advocates for a novel legal approach: a complete prohibition of emotion recognition systems for non-medical purposes, alongside a nuanced taxonomy regulating their use in medical contexts. Using a real-effort experiment, we show that people project their current tastes onto others when forecasting others' behavior, even when their tastes are exogenously manipulated and transparently different. In the first part of our experiment, "workers" stated their willingness to continue working on a tedious task. We varied how many initial tasks workers completed before eliciting their willingness to work (WTW); some were relatively fresh when stating their WTW, whereas others were relatively tired. Later, a separate group of "predictors"—who also worked on the task—guessed the WTW of workers in each state. We find: (i) tired workers were less willing to work than fresh workers; (ii) predictors (in aggregate) accurately guessed the WTW of workers when they were in the same state as the workers about whom they were predicting; but (iii) when fresh predictors were guessing about tired workers, they substantially overestimated their WTW; and (iv) when tired predictors were guessing about fresh workers, they underestimated their WTW. Using an additional treatment, we find that workers also mispredicted their own future WTW, and we compare the magnitudes of intrapersonal and interpersonal projection bias. Firms can derive insights not only from their own failures but also from the innovation failures of counterparts in the same industry. This study investigates how 109 Chinese A‐share listed high‐tech firms (2013–2022) learn from counterparts' innovation failures to improve their success rate of innovation and emphasizes the crucial role of venture capital (VC) syndication networks in facilitating knowledge transfer. Central VCs within the network notably enhance vicarious learning from others' failures. The study focuses on the language learning experiences of adult migrants from refugee backgrounds with limited educational experiences before migration. This group is often referred to as LESLLA learners; LESLLA is an acronym for Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults. The study used Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT) — a data-driven, bottom-up methodology for qualitative research — to gain understanding of the conditions that help or hinder LESLLA learners' language development and of the strategies they use to enhance learning and to overcome obstacles. The dataset is comprised of thirty interviews with adult refugees from Syria and Eritrea learning Dutch in the Netherlands. The analyses identified self-efficacy, which has been described as 'the soul of strategies' (Oxford, 2017), as a core category, differentiating between learners who showed contentment about their language learning achievements and expressed confidence in further learning, and those who expressed little confidence and a sense of failure. Conditions hindering self-efficacy include the cognitive conditions 'forgetting' and 'stress', and the social condition 'isolation'. Facilitative conditions in the cognitive realm are 'motivation' and 'language learning strategies'. 'Social strategies in new social networks' is the condition that stands out as strongly supportive for self-efficacy. The data showed how LESLLA learners are often not in the position of power to build their networks.
