The primary objective of the book on'Contemporary Topics in Medium Energy Physics'is to help the reader in exploring important frontier research, as of the year of 1992, in the area of medium energy physics. The book is the result of the multi-pronged efforts by the authors who were invited to speak at the Second German­ Chinese Symposium on'Medium Energy Physics'(September 7-10, 1992, Bochum, Germany). The premise of the meeting is to investigate primarily how quantum chromo dynamics (QCD), the candidate theory of strong interactions, manifests itself in high energy and nuclear physics. This book is divided into four parts: (i) field-theoretic treatments in QCD; (ii) effective chirally symmetric models and QCD; (iii) electroweak physics in general; and (iv) topological solutions. The focus is more on exposition of new ideas, rather than a comprehensive review of the current status, concerning these subjects, as of the year of 1992. As there are many distinctly different research areas in contemporary intermediate energy physics, we could only choose a few topics of current interest, especially those which are related, directly or indirectly, to the structural studies of the nucleon (proton or neutron). Fortunately, there are in recent years merging trends in these studies: There is a call for an alternative, and more efficient, method to handle problems related to strong interactions (as described by QCD). This is the focus of the papers included in Part I.

The first Europhysics Study Conference on Electroweak Effects at High Energies was held at the'Ettore Majorana'Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from February 1 -12, 1983. The conference was attended by 61 physicists from 11 countries. The conference was sponsored by the European Physical Society, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Technological Research, the Sicilian Regional Government and the California Institute of Technology. CONFERENCE FORMAT The Study Conference followed a new intensive format in which the state of our knowledge of the electroweak interaction, and the relation of the electroweak sector to Grand Unified and Superunified Theories was reviewed in some depth. During the two week conference, 54 experimental and theoretical talks were presented, and four evening discussion sessions were held. The Erice surroundings, the wide-ranging conference program, and the fact that nearly all of the participants were directly involved in recent major experimental or theoretical developments, led to animated and very friendly discussions. Participants had the rare opportunity to view most of the major trends in high energy physics in a short interval of time, and to discuss and contemplate the trends in the uniquely peaceful yet stimulating atmosphere which is an Erice tradition.

This volume presents an authoritative review of the physics of strongly and electroweakly interacting elementary particle matter in extreme conditions that prevailed in the very early Universe, and which are being recreated in high energy physics laboratories today. Exciting, high-quality experimental results from RHIC collider at Brookhaven, collected since summer 2000, suggest that strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma has indeed been produced. The study of these phenomena will form an important part of theoretical particle and nuclear physics for years to come.Based on the discussions of more than a hundred experts at the Strong and Electroweak Matter 2004 Meeting, this volume contains an up-to-date overview of present ideas on QCD matter: quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions, phase structure, kinetics, thermalization and transport properties. Also discussed are topics related to the cosmology of the early Universe, dark matter, inflation and creation of particle-antiparticle asymmetries. Both analytic and numerical lattice Monte Carlo methods are emphasized.

The SEWM2002 workshop, like the ones before, brought together theoretical physicists working on thermal field theory and, more generally, on (resummation) techniques for deriving effective actions based on QCD and the electroweak standard model of elementary particle physics, but describing nonstandard situations. The focus was on the temperature/chemical potential phase diagram of QCD, considered both analytically and with lattice gauge theory, equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermo field theory, and on heavy ion physics. Other related topics were “small x physics” in QCD, electroweak baryogenesis, inflation, and dark energy in the early universe.

This book presents material that includes introductory reviews of astrophysics, the status of electroweak theories, Higgs searches, and precision tests of the standard model. Recent results on CP violation from CERN's NA48 experiment are discussed, along with the most recent results from the Babar and Belle experiments at the B factories at SLAC in the US and KEK in Japan. Following that are theoretical talks on heavy quark decays and non-perturbative QCD. There are also discussions on QCD results from CERN's LEP and DESY's HERA colliders. Pre-conference presentations cover applications of the field in the environmental and medical domains.

The NEWS 99 international symposium discusses symmetries in electroweak processes in nuclei. Many phenomena in nuclear and particle physics are related to symmetry. It is known that we are living in a left-handed world as far as the Weak interaction is concerned, but neutrino physics suggests that a right-handed world may also be relevant. Chiral symmetry and its breaking plays an essential role in generating hadron masses. Symmetries related to flavor in the strong interaction like isospin, SU(3) and so on are known to be violated although they play a crucial role for the understanding of phenomena in nuclear and particle physics. The treatment of tiny breaking is of particular importance. Weak and electromagnetic interactions are well established at the fundamental level and can be used to probe the structure of nuclei and hadrons.A wide variety of phenomena in nuclear and particle physics were discussed in NEWS 99 with an emphasis on symmetry. Topics ranged from nuclear structure to neutrino properties, covering highly phenomenological to fundamental fields.

This book contains articles by experts on the plasma phase of quantum chromodynamics, and the plasma phase of electroweak interactions. The former plasma phase is being tested at RHIC (Brookhaven), and has been tested at CERN. Both plasmas have played roles in the development of the Universe since the Big Bang. A third topic is that of the high density colour superconductive state of matter, which may be present in the core of neutron stars.

This volume deals with the electroweak interactions at low and high energies. The results of the collider experiments are discussed, and the low energy experiments with complications for astrophysics are considered. Also, theoretical developments are presented to highlight the impact of forthcoming experiments and to find new directions of study.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the X Jorge André Swieca Summer School — Particles and Fields. It includes topics on non-commutative geometry, constructive quantum field theory and duality in quantum field theory, as well as various subjects in high energy physics and phenomenology.

Stanford University hosted the XIX International Symposium on Lepton and Photon Interactions at High Energies on August 9 - 14, 1999, at the Law School on the Stanford University Campus, the site of the previous Symposia. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Symposium.

Already in 1997, the topics included in this meeting had been enlarged to include all different phases and phase transitions relevant on laboratory scales or in cosmology. The'98 meeting followed this trend, and there was a balanced combination of the physics associated with both strong and electroweak interactions (and beyond). The main motivation continues to be the understanding of the standard model in “extreme” situations, particularly relevant on the cosmological scale. Most contributions were in one way or another concerned with the finite-temperature aspects of strong and electroweak interactions, and, as in the previous meeting, one persistent theme was the present understanding of baryon-number asymmetry: how it can be created, and how it can be maintained beyond the earliest stages of the Universe. The recent progress in describing the real-time and nonequilibrium dynamics of the non-Abelian gauge was covered in a number of the main talks, as well as in several shorter contributions and posters. The conference presented examples of impressive analytical progress and equally impressive results from numerical simulations: the two techniques continue to fruitfully complement each other. One completely new theme at this conference was the recent suggestion that finite-density QCD may contain new and interesting condensed phases in the neighborhood of the conventional critical density separating quark matter from hadronic matter. All of these developments, and many more, are reflected in this book.

This volume provides a broad picture of the current understanding of electroweak and strong interactions, according to most recent experimental results from some of the world's largest particle accelerators: LEP II, Tevatron, HERA and SPS. Special attention is given to CP violation, the Higgs boson search, and precision tests of the electroweak thoery. Although generally oriented, the contributions are targeted at postgraduate students in particle physics.

The twentieth Johns Hopkins Workshop on current problems in particle theory took place in Heidelberg. The topic of the workshop was chosen in view of the phantastic success enjoyed by the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions.Until today, no significant deviations from the predictions of the standard model have been observed. However, precision tests have been dominantly performed in the high-energy domain, where the QCD coupling constant is small enough to allow for a perturbative treatment of the strong interaction. It is therefore very important to consider also the low-energy region for which non-perturbative aspects of QCD come into play.

This book deals with the most recent achievements in the following areas of high energy physics: physics of e+e- collisions, lepton-nucleon scattering, relativistic heavy ion collisions (the quest for quark-gluon plasma), and multiparticle production. New experimental results from Tevatron, LEP, SPS and HERA and the theoretical progress in the aforementioned fields are presented.

The purpose of this workshop was to explore the potential of present (TRISTAN, LEP1, SLC) and future (LEP2, NLC) e⁺e⁻ colliding-beam experiments to test the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions with high precision and to probe new physics.

The week-long Lake Louise Winter Institute starts with three days of pedagogical lectures by invited speakers, and the remainder of the time is for short presentations on current research topics. This year, the theme of the Institute was'Topics in Electroweak Physics'. The invited lecturers were Drs E G Adelberger, G Altarelli, J Ellis, J-M Poutissou, B Sadoulet and S Wojcicki.

The proceedings include review talks and short contributions concerning the most recent theoretical as well as experimental results in high energy physics directly connected with the research programs on the accelerators LEP, UNK and LHC.

Despite the great success of the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions to describe the phenomena observed in high energy physics experiments, the mechanism by which the elementary particles are endowed with their masses is yet to be unraveled. Does nature choose the Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking as predicted by the standard model, or do we need some alternative explanation? The purpose of the workshop is to capture new trends and ideas in this exciting area of fundamental physics, and to explore the potential of recent (LEPI), present (HERA, LEPII, SLC, Tevatron), and future (FMC, LHC, NLC) colliding-beam experiments to shed light on the Higgs puzzle.

The symposium focused on the following hot topics of particle physics, such as heavy flavor productions and decays; QCD corrections; EW symmetry breaking theories; precise tests of Standard Model and physics beyond Standard Model; CP violation and rare decays etc. There are 30 talks presented at the symposium by participants from all over the world, who are active in the forefront of the fields.

The Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI) has become the major summer school for advanced students in elementary particle theory in the United States, offering courses in particle theory, phenomenology, and mathematical physics. The theme of the 1990 school,'Testing the Standard Model', was chosen because of the many new high precision results that had recently become available from the TEVATRON, SLC, and LEP. The goal was to explore the theoretical background and implications of experiments at these and future facilities, both in and beyond the standard model.

The proceedings presents in a systematic way Top searches, Jets, Gauge Boson production, precision tests of electroweak theory, Ln s Physics, heavy Flavours and exotics. In addition, contributions to the sessions'News from the World','Short term future'and'Long term future'show the progress of SSC in USA, of LHC at CERN, UNK/VLEPP in USSR together with Perspectives of Hadron Collider Physics.

This volume contains the talks given at the above workshop which was devoted to discussing the newest developments in various models of electroweak symmetry breaking forming the basis of modern particle physics. It includes various aspects of Higgs physics and condensate models embodying dynamical symmetry breaking.

This volume covers the collective behaviour of the Standard Model at finite temperature and density. The main physics motivation for this research comes from the early history of the Universe and also from the experimental efforts to create the quark-gluon plasma in laboratory experiments. Advances in theoretical investigations (effective theories, progress in numerical simulations, etc.) as well as the phenomenological applications figure in the broad spectrum of invited lectures. Prospective studies of beyond-the-Standard-Model theories receive particular attention. Non-equilibrium phenomena, especially questions related to baryon generation due to the electroweak anomaly and inflationary dynamics, are also discussed.

Professor J Dirk Walecka has made significant and lasting contributions to the field of nuclear physics. His work on many-body theory and electron scattering from nuclei profoundly influenced the direction of research in electromagnetic nuclear physics. His formulation of semileptonic weak interactions with nuclei introduced many nuclear physicists to the'standard model'and the concept of the nucleus as a'laboratory'for studying fundamental interactions. His development of meson-baryon field theories for nuclear systems ('quantum hadrodynamics') initiated novel research on relativistic effects in nuclei, high-density nuclear matter, and applications of field-theoretic techniques to the nuclear many-body problem.This proceedings focusses on three major areas of Professor Walecka's research: many-body theory, electroweak interactions in nuclei and relativistic nuclear physics. The topics discussed cover a broad and interesting range in condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high-energy physics and cosmology.

Recent results from all types of high energy colliders (e⁺e⁻, pp, ep) are presented from the view point of electroweak interaction and QCD/Jet physics together with related phenomenological reviews. Expected physics at future colliders, both being built or planned, are also discussed including e+e- linear collider, pp collider and heavy ion collider.

By adopting the approach of simulating actual morning report sessions experienced by hospital doctors, Clinical Case Studies in Pediatrics provides a compendium of commonly seen types of pediatrics cases that require hospital admission. Each case study is presented by description of indication of admission to the hospital, the physical examination and laboratory test results, followed by a differential diagnosis, discussion of the differential diagnosis, and finally an in-depth discussion of the actual diagnosis. The proceedings contains reviews and short communications on the following topics: status of the standard model, rare decays and CP violation, heavy quark physics, neutrino physics, Higgs bosons and electroweak breaking, nonperturbative effects in electroweak interactions, physics beyond the standard models, quantum chromodynamics and strong interactions.

The papers presented here focus on new developments in both theoretical and phenomenological aspects of standard theory, with an emphasis on understanding of the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. This workshop covers the formal aspects and the related new models of electroweak symmetry breaking and the present status of the Standard Model.

High energy physics has witnessed a remarkable development toward the theory of everything (TOE), whose best candidate is superstring theory. This development started with supersymmetry and has now reached the point of subjecting to experiment the problem of understanding the origin of space-time. This wide spectrum of unprecedented conceptual developments has its roots in our present knowledge of the fundamental forces of nature. This volume covers the most recent advances concerning these topics, taking into account their impact on observable phenomena. In addition, it reviews the status and prospects of all known gauge forces, including the experimental results on their validity.

This book constitutes the proceedings of an up-to-date and comprehensive meeting devoted to the question whether baryon number violation can occur — in the standard model of weak and electromagnetic interactions — at rates which can be relevant to cosmology and particle experiment. There has been a great deal of activity and many new results in the past year, and the meeting was the first occasion for a review of the field. It is the only source in which all the work in this field is reviewed in a single volume. As such, it would provide a useful reference for graduate students and researchers wanting to learn more about this area.

The workshop collected together theoreticians and experimentalists for a discussion about the most recent experiments and their impact on theoretical ideas. The discussion included the new data from LEP and SLD, the evidence for the top quark from Tevatron, the structure function measurements from HERA, and the searches for dark matter. Also, new projects for physics with large neutrino detectors and CP violation at e+e- factories were presented, and a survey of high energy astroparticle physics was included. Particular attention was paid to the interplay between microscopical and cosmological scales.
