While decent work has emerged as the central theme of the psychology of work theory and a global concept and directive for promoting social, political, and economic justice, it has garnered increasing scientific and political attention in the past two decades. However, until now, no defined measurement scale for the pharmaceutical supply chain exists. The present study aims to design and validate key performance indicators (KPIs) for 'decent work' in the pharmaceutical industry supply chain of Iran, using the Decent Work Daffi Scale (2017) as a reliable framework with five sub-scales and 15 items, tested and validated. For the validation of the Decent Work Scale, a quantitative survey study was conducted among selected pharmaceutical industry experts with a sample size of 228 individuals in the year 2023. The current study adopted an exploratory factor analysis approach using SPSS software and a confirmatory factor analysis through AMOS version 24 software. In this context, the factor structure, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and Cronbach's alpha coefficients were examined. The results showed that the five-factor structure outperforms the one-factor model with evidence supporting the convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity of the five-factor scale. Thus, the measurement of decent work in the pharmaceutical industry of Iran comprises five sub-scales: occupational safety conditions, access to healthcare, adequate remuneration, Free time and rest, and alignment of organizational values with family and societal values. This scale can serve as a useful tool for industrial and organizational psychology research, as well as for studies on the sustainability of social supply chains.

The application of supply chain management within the construction industry presents significant challenges due to the transient nature of construction projects, high levels of customization, low repeatability of activities, absence of a production line, and interdependent relationships among activities. Construction supply chains are intricate systems, where the final performance results from numerous decisions made across multiple independent companies. Interactions among supply chain stakeholders and the unique characteristics of each project create complex phenomena with multiple interconnected elements and variables. The Viable System Model (VSM), rooted in organizational cybernetics, provides a structured approach to addressing complex and unstructured problems. This structured approach allows analysts to gain in-depth insights into the functional issues of the existing system and understand how to modify the system design to adapt to internal and external disruptions.MethodologyDespite the extensive capabilities of the Viable System Model as a diagnostic tool for assessing organizational structure and achieving viability, a systematic and distinct methodology for its application is lacking. Researchers in VSM often do not employ a specific methodology for systems analysis. In this study, we propose a methodology for applying the VSM as a diagnostic tool for organizations, derived from a review of theoretical foundations and practical requirements of VSM. Building on Jackson's methodology outlined in his book "System Thinking, Creative Holism for Managers," we have developed a methodology by integrating Jackson's approach with case study research. This methodology includes stages such as designing a diagnostic framework, selecting case studies, identifying systems, conducting system diagnosis, and validating the model. We applied this methodology to diagnose the supply chain of an Iranian petrochemical construction project, resulting in the development of a viable system model. The validity of the research methodology and findings was confirmed through expert participation and the application of multiple qualitative criteria.ResultsFollowing the selection of a case study and the identification of systems, we investigated the existence and function of five subsystems and communication channels within the focal system using a case study approach to gather information and develop the viable system model. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted at various managerial and technical levels within a prominent project-oriented company in Iran's petrochemical industry. These interviews lasted between 45 and 60 minutes each. Data collection methods also included observation and document examination. The research involved a semi-structured interview with 18 individuals to explore complications within each of the five systems. Subsequently, the collected data was adapted to the model's requirements, and findings were extracted through intra-case analysis and coding. This process led to model development and the identification of weaknesses within the construction supply chain from the perspective of the five systems and communication channels, with a focus on achieving viability.ConclusionsThe developed model highlights weaknesses and bottlenecks within the focal system, shedding light on the most significant issues. A critical issue identified in the case study is the evident lack of coherence within System 4 and System 5. The results reveal that the incoherence of System 5, divided between parts of the company at level 0 and the parent company at a higher recursion level outside the focal system, results in defects within the communication channels related to this system, including C14 (Connection of System 4 with System 5), C9 (Algedonic channel), and C16 (Connection of System 5 with the homeostatic loop of Systems 3 and 4). Additionally, System 4, which is jointly managed by a segment of the company and the project management consultant, leads to disruptions in channels related to this system, particularly C13 (Homeostatic loop between Systems 3 and 4), C14 (Communication between System 4 and System 5), and C15 (Homeostat of System 4 with the future environment). Concerning common errors, the dominant error is E5, attributed to the lack of coherence between Systems 4 and 5 and the weak performance of System 2. This error largely stems from inconsistencies between the two operational units responsible for the engineering phase and the construction and installation phase. To achieve viability within the focal system, several measures should be taken, including the establishment of centralized Systems 4 and 5 within the company and strengthening communication channels with incomplete or insufficient capacity. These channels include the connection between System 4 and System 5 (C14), the Algedonic channel (C9), the connection of System 5 with the homeostatic loop of Systems 3 and 4 (C16), the homeostatic loop of System 3 and System 4 (C13), and the homeostat of System 4 with the future environment (C15). A crucial homeostatic link involves the communication and interaction between System 3 and System 4 (C13) to establish dynamic communication between the current project environment and its future. However, the interaction between these two systems is currently conflicting and misaligned due to the lack of coherence within System 4 and differences in functionality between System 3's perspective on the current state and System 4's perspective on the future state. Balancing the emphasis on System 4 and the future with the daily operations of the supply chain's operational units within System 1 is essential to avoid supply chain disruptions or inefficiencies. The lack of coherence within System 4 also affects the performance of other systems, particularly System 5, as well as the stability of System 4 in relation to the future environment. Inadequate information about the future environment can hinder informed decision-making within the system. By addressing these points within the model, the construction project's supply chain can move toward viability and better adapt to changes in the project environment. This research represents one of the limited studies in the implementation of VSM within the construction project environment.

Today, improving machine availability is vital for industries to compete in the global market. Spare parts play an essential role in the maintenance and repair of equipment, but planning an extensive network in strategic industries with various spare parts can be very challenging due to the existence of different decision factors. The spare parts supply chain deals with inventory management issues, which necessitates considering the related decisions such as determining the stock level and order quantity. Moreover, demand uncertainty and long supply time make decision-making more complex. This paper presents a repair and supply planning model for repairable spare parts while considering a modified formulation of demand uncertainty to minimize costs. The model determines the optimal stock level, lateral transshipment, assignment of spare part orders to suppliers, equipment to repair centers, and the number of intervals over the planning horizon used in demand estimation. This research contributes to the literature by integrating recent decisions, using demand approximation by piecewise linearization, and considering backorder in warehouses evaluated by queuing models. A hybrid approach, including heuristic and genetic algorithms, is used to optimize the model using data from an oil company. The results show that using piecewise linearization and integrated repair and supply planning decisions optimizes costs and improves performance. Also, the availability is affected by the demand estimation, which necessitates precision prediction.

Productions of the industries around the world depend on using equipment and machines. Therefore, it is vital to support the supply of equipment and spare parts for maintenance operations, especially in strategic industries that separate optimization of inventory management, supplier selection, network design, and planning decisions may lead to sub-optimal solutions. The integration of forward and reverse spare part logistics network can help optimize total costs. In this paper, a mathematical model is presented for designing and planning an integrated forward-reverse repairable spare parts supply chain to make optimal decisions. The model considers the uncertainty in demand during the lead-time and the optimal assignment of repairable equipment to inspection, disassembly, and repair centers. A METRIC (Multi-Echelon Technique for recoverable Item Control) model is integrated into the forward-reverse supply chain to handle inventory management. A case study of National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) is presented to validate the model. The non-linear constraints are linearized by using a linearization technique; then the model is solved by an iterative procedure in GAMS. A prominent outcome of the analyses shows that the same policies for repair and purchase of all the equipment and spare parts do not result in optimal solutions. Also, considering supply, repair, and inventory management decisions of spare parts simultaneously helps decision-makers enhance the supply chain's performance by applying a well-balanced repairing and purchasing policy.

Retailers selling fresh products often encounter unsold inventory remains at the end of each period. The leftover product has a lower perceived quality than the new product. Therefore, retailers try to influence consumers’ preferences through price differentiation that leads to an internal competition based on product age and prices. This paper addresses the pricing and inventory control problem for fresh products to capture the influence of this competition on the supply chain members’ decisions and profits. A new coordination model based on a return policy with the revenue and cost-sharing contract is developed to improve the profits of independent supply chain members. The supply chain consists of one supplier and one retailer, where consumers are sensitive to the product’s retail price and freshness degree. Firstly, the retailer’s optimal decisions are derived in a decentralized decision-making structure. Then a centralized approach is used to optimize the supply chain decisions from the whole supply chain viewpoint. Eventually, a new coordination contract is designed to convince the members to participate in the coordination model. Numerical examples are carried out to compare the performance of different decision-making approaches. Our findings indicate that the proposed contract can coordinate the supply chain effectively. Furthermore, the coordinated decision-making model is more profitable and beneficial for the whole supply chain compared to the decentralized one. The results also demonstrate that when consumers are more sensitive to freshness, the simultaneous sale of multiple-aged products at different prices is more profitable.

Agri-food supply chains have received the attention of many researchers in recent years for various reasons, including food security and health-related issues. Wheat, as a staple food in many countries, is the most cultivated crop in the world. Due to the importance of wheat, this paper proposes a mixed-integer linear mathematical model for redesigning and planning of the wheat supply chain. The proposed model determines the location and capacity of new storage facilities while addressing supplier selection, ordering, storing, transportation, and distribution problems. This model considers the differences between long-term and short-term storage facilities and the quality of wheat. Moreover, the proposed model addresses the uncertainties associated with the quantity of domestic supply and demand through a stochastic scenario-based programming approach. Applicability of this model is investigated using real data from the wheat supply chain of Iran. Results show that seven new long-term storage facilities should be opened, which decreases total costs by 3.45 percent.

In this paper, an inventory-routing problem for a network of appliance repair service is discussed including several repair depots and customers. The customer in this network makes a demand to have his/her faulty appliance repaired. Then, the repairman is assigned to the demand based on the skill needed for repairing of appliance differing for each one. The assigned repairman picks up the faulty appliance from the customer place using the vehicle for transferring faulty appliances to repair depot. The vehicle for picking up and delivering the appliances has a maximum capacity. Additionally, the repair depot needs spare parts to repair the faulty appliances that is supplied either by the supplier or lateral transshipment from the other depots. The capacitated vehicle inventory-routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery is NP-hard which needs special optimization procedure. Regarding the skill of repairman, it becomes more complex. Many solution approaches have been provided so far which have their pros and cons to deal with. In this study, an augmented angle-based sweep method is developed to cluster nodes for solving the problem. Finally, the heuristic is used in the main body of genetic algorithm with special representation.

Agricultural food supply chains of different grains such as wheat, rice, and corn include several processes from cropping and harvesting to distribution. Integrating these processes to reduce costs, in addition to providing sufficient supply, are of the major goals of agri-food supply chain management. Rice is an important grain that constitutes an important part of people’s diets throughout the world. FAO predicts that global rice utilization would increase over the next few years. Considering rice's importance, in this paper, a mixed-integer linear mathematical model for designing and planning of rice supply chain is proposed which aims to maximize total profit by integrating different decisions of the rice supply chain including supplier selection, cropping, fertilizing, pest control, harvesting, milling, transportation, and distribution. This model considers different rice varieties and takes into account irrigation water requirements of crops and available water resources. A case study of Iran farmlands in Gilan province is employed to show the applicability and advantages of the proposed model for the rice supply chain. Results indicate that increasing conversion ratio of paddy to rice and reducing labor costs would have a significant impact on the total profit of the supply chain.

One of the most important challenges of designing a supply chain network is possible disruptions. This study is intended to design a supply chain network considering the minimum amount of receiving as a customer satisfaction index. To overcome disruptions, the three main methods applied include establishing new facilities, using bilateral agreements, and using the existing facilities of instantaneous services market. To do so, a complex integer linear programming model is established and examined as a case study of a subscription plan for publications. In the case of disruptions, three possibilities will happen. Firstly, if the cost of disruption is low, it will be cost-effective to choose whether an instantaneous market or the adoption of shortage. Secondly, if the cost of disruption and shortage is high but less than the budget allocated to facilities, the bilateral agreements will be used. Finally, if the cost of disruptions and shortage is too high, the establishment of a new facility will be cost-effective. It should be noticed that by increasing for demand or in the probability of disruption, the cost gap between the use of the existing background facility and/or buying the service of the instantaneous market would be narrowed by establishing the facility.

Tehran, as one of the most populated capital cities worldwide, is categorized in the group of highly polluted cities in terms of the geographical location as well as increased number of industries, vehicles, domestic fuel consumption, intra-city trips, increased manufacturing units, and in general excessive increase in the consumption of fossil energies. City logistics models can be effectively helpful for solving the complicated problems of this city. In the present study, a queuing theory-based bi-objective mathematical model is presented, which aims to optimize the environmental and economic costs in city logistics operations. It also tries to reduce the response time in the network. The first objective is associated with all beneficiaries and the second one is applicable for perishable and necessary goods. The proposed model makes decisions on urban distribution centers location problem. Subsequently, as a case study, the fruit and vegetable distribution network of Tehran city is investigated and redesigned via the proposed modelling. The results of the implementation of the model through traditional and augmented ε-constraint methods indicate the efficiency of the proposed model in redesigning the given network.

In today’s competitive world, supply chain management gains more attention every day. One of the most challenging topics in this field for managers and researchers is supply chain disruption management. When a disruption occurs in an echelon of a multi level supply chain, it may affect other echelon’s performance in that supply chain as well. The main objective of current research is helping decision makers to choose best supply, production and ordering quantity between echelons so that after disruption occurrence, SC recovers and returns to pre-disruption plan with minimum recovering costs.In this paper, production and retailers disruptions are studied and a mathematical recovery plan is designed with objective function of minimizing total cost of supply chain in the recovery period to help all members of the supply chain in returning to normal situation. The proposed model is solved in MATLAB 2011 by the suggested heuristic method as well as GAMS software. Finally, results of both solvers are compared which shows the applicability of heuristic method

Purpose: The main objective of this paper is to investigate the role of supply chain management in research-development projects and to provide a conceptual model for project supply chain management efforts specially designed for project-based organization. Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual article examining current perspectives of project supply chain management applied in project-based organization requirements. It provides a general framework for project supply chain management. Findings: Providing a conceptual project supply chain management framework can be applied to organizations practically. This framework has been applied in a large case study in Iran and is supported by practical implementation in defence industries, one of the most important high-tech industries in Iran. Practical implications: This paper provides a very helpful guideline for practitioners in implementing project supply chain management throughout the organizations and especially in large scale ones. Originality/value: The paper may be of high value to researchers in the project supply chain management field and to practitioners involved with SCM adoption in the organizations. This study further opens up new lines of rescarch and highlights implications for project supply chain management efforts, including change management programs through SCM tools. The paper also provides a synthesis and analysis of the viewpoints and the main factors as reflected in the literature on various dimensions of project supply chain management.

Recently, urbanization has been expanded rapidly in the world and a number of metropolitan areas have been appeared with a population of more than 10 million people. Because of dense population in metropolitan and consequently increasing the delivery of goods and services, there has been a lot of problems including traffic congestion, air pollution, accidents and high energy consumption. This made some complexities in distribution of urban goods; Therefore, it is essential to provide creative solutions to overcome these complexities. City logistics models can be effective in solving these complexities. In this paper, concepts and definitions related to city logistics are explained to provide a mathematical model in order to design city logistics distribution network aim at minimizing response times. This objective is effective for goods and emergency services, especially in times of crisis and also for goods that are delivered as soon as possible. This is a three-level network and has been used in modeling of queuing theory. To validate the model, a numerical example has been established and results of the model have been explained using BARON solver in Gams software. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future research are presented.

Up to now, blood products in various conditions such as severe bleeding, organ transplants were essential for human. One of the situations that leads to increase in needs of blood products highly and blood transfusion network is faced with problem to supply of them, when a disaster for example an earthquake happens. In this paper, for approaching to the real world, a mathematical model for designing of blood products supply chain in disaster time is proposed and due to inability of affected city to supply of needed blood products, the issue of transferring of these products from adjacent provinces has considered. The model is bi-objective and the corrected constraint method is used to solve it. The case study about the earthquake disaster in Tehran has studied using the data of blood transfusion network. The results show considering the possibility of blood products transfusion from other provinces can help to decision makers in order to increase the service to applicants of blood products in disaster time.

Inventory management has frequently been targeted by researchers as one of the most pivotal problems in supply chain management. With the expansion of research studies on inventory management in supply chains, perishable inventory has been introduced and its fundamental differences from non-perishable inventory have been emphasized. This article presents livestock as a type of inventory that has been less studied in the literature. Differences between different inventory types, affect various levels of strategic, tactical and operational decision-making. In most articles, different levels of decision-making are discussed independently and sequentially. In this paper, not only is the livestock inventory introduced, but also a model has been developed to integrate decisions across different levels of decision-making using bi-level programming. Computational results indicate that the proposed bi-level approach is more efficient than the sequential decision-making approach.

Thousands of victims and millions of affected people are hurt by natural disasters every year. Therefore, it is essential to prepare proper response programs that consider early activities of disaster management. In this paper, a multiobjective model for distribution centers which are located and allocated periodically to the damaged areas in order to distribute relief commodities is offered. The main objectives of this model are minimizing the total costs and maximizing the least rate of the satisfaction in the sense of being fair while distributing the items. The model simultaneously determines the location of relief distribution centers and the allocation of affected areas to relief distribution centers. Furthermore, an efficient solution approach based on genetic algorithm has been developed in order to solve the proposed mathematical model. The results of genetic algorithm are compared with the results provided by simulated annealing algorithm and LINGO software. The computational results show that the proposed genetic algorithm provides relatively good solutions in a reasonable time.
