Glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1) regulates glycemic excursions by augmenting insulin production and inhibiting glucagon secretion. Liraglutide, a long‐acting GLP‐1 analog, can improve glycemic control for treating type 2 diabetes and prevent neutrophil extravasation in inflammation. Here, we explored the role of liraglutide in the development and therapy of murine lung and liver cancers. In this study, liraglutide substantially decreased circulating neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) markers myeloperoxidase, elastase, and dsDNA in Lewis lung cancer (LLC) and Hepa1‐6 tumor‐bearing mice. Furthermore, liraglutide downregulated NETs and reactive oxygen species (ROS) of neutrophils in the tumor microenvironment. Functionally, in vitro experiments showed that liraglutide reduced NET formation by inhibiting ROS. In addition, we showed that liraglutide enhanced the anti‐tumoral efficiency of programmed cell death‐1 (PD‐1) inhibition in LLC and Hepa1‐6 tumor‐bearing C57BL/6 mice. However, the removal of NETs significantly weakened the antitumor efficiency of liraglutide. We further demonstrated that the long‐term antitumor CD8+ T cell responses induced by the combination therapy rejected rechallenges by respective tumor cell lines. Taken together, our findings suggest that liraglutide may promote the anti‐tumoral efficiency of PD‐1 inhibition by reducing NETs in lung and liver cancers.

Abstract Purpose The research endeavors to explore the implications of CD47 in cancer immunotherapy effectiveness. Specifically, there is a gap in comprehending the influence of CD47 on the tumor immune microenvironment, particularly in relation to CD8 + T cells. Our study aims to elucidate the prognostic and immunological relevance of CD47 to enhance insights into its prospective utilities in immunotherapeutic interventions. Methods Differential gene expression analysis, prognosis assessment, immunological infiltration evaluation, pathway enrichment analysis, and correlation investigation were performed utilizing a combination of R packages, computational algorithms, diverse datasets, and patient cohorts. Validation of the concept was achieved through the utilization of single-cell sequencing technology. Results CD47 demonstrated ubiquitous expression across various cancer types and was notably associated with unfavorable prognostic outcomes in pan-cancer assessments. Immunological investigations unveiled a robust correlation between CD47 expression and T-cell infiltration rather than T-cell exclusion across multiple cancer types. Specifically, the CD47-high group exhibited a poorer prognosis for the cytotoxic CD8 + T cell Top group compared to the CD47-low group, suggesting a potential impairment of CD8 + T cell functionality by CD47. The exploration of mechanism identified enrichment of CD47-associated differentially expressed genes in the CD8 + T cell exhausted pathway in multiple cancer contexts. Further analyses focusing on the CD8 TCR Downstream Pathway and gene correlation patterns underscored the significant involvement of TNFRSF9 in mediating these effects. Conclusion A robust association exists between CD47 and the exhaustion of CD8 + T cells, potentially enabling immune evasion by cancer cells and thereby contributing to adverse prognostic outcomes. Consequently, genes such as CD47 and those linked to T-cell exhaustion, notably TNFRSF9, present as promising dual antigenic targets, providing critical insights into the field of immunotherapy.

Background: Microglia-mediated inflammation is a critical factor in the progression of ischemic stroke. Consequently, mitigating excessive microglial activation represents a potential therapeutic strategy for ischemic injury. Thymol, a monophenol derived from plant essential oils, exhibits diverse beneficial biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, with demonstrated protective effects in various disease models. However, its specific effects on ischemic stroke and microglial inflammation remain unexplored. Methods: Rodent transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) model was established to simulate ischemic stroke. TTC staining, modified neurological function score (mNSS), and behavioral tests were used to assess the severity of neurological damage. Then immunofluorescence staining and cytoskeleton analysis were used to determine activation of microglia. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was utilized to induce the inflammatory response of primary microglia in vitro. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed to exam the expression of inflammatory cytokines. And western blot was used to investigate the mechanism of the anti-inflammatory effect of thymol. Results: In this study, we found that thymol treatment could ameliorate post-stroke neurological impairment and reduce infarct volume by mitigating microglial activation and pro-inflammatory response (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α). Mechanically, thymol could inhibit the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K), sink serine/threonine kinase (Akt), and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), thereby suppressing the activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that thymol could reduce the microglial inflammation by targeting PI3K/Akt/mTOR/NF-κB signaling pathway, ultimately alleviating ischemic brain injury. These findings suggest that thymol is a promising candidate as a neuroprotective agent against ischemic stroke.

Ultrasound imaging has a history of several decades. With its non-invasive, low-cost advantages, this technology has been widely used in medicine and there have been many significant breakthroughs in ultrasound imaging. Even so, there are still some drawbacks. Therefore, some novel image reconstruction and image analysis algorithms have been proposed to solve these problems. Although these new solutions have some effects, many of them introduce some other side effects, such as high computational complexity in beamforming. At the same time, the usage requirements of medical ultrasound equipment are relatively high, and it is not very user-friendly for inexperienced beginners. As artificial intelligence technology advances, some researchers have initiated efforts to deploy deep learning to address challenges in ultrasound imaging, such as reducing computational complexity in adaptive beamforming and aiding novices in image acquisition. In this survey, we are about to explore the application of deep learning in medical ultrasound imaging, spanning from image reconstruction to clinical diagnosis.

Abstract Background Schizochytrium limacinum holds significant value utilized in the industrial-scale synthesis of natural DHA. Nitrogen-limited treatment can effectively increase the content of fatty acids and DHA, but there is currently no research on chromatin accessibility during the process of transcript regulation. The objective of this research was to delve into the workings of fatty acid production in S. limacinum by examining the accessibility of promoters and profiling gene expressions. Results Results showed that differentially accessible chromatin regions (DARs)-associated genes were enriched in fatty acid metabolism, signal transduction mechanisms, and energy production. By identifying and annotating DARs-associated motifs, the study obtained 54 target transcription factor classes, including BPC, RAMOSA1, SPI1, MYC, and MYB families. Transcriptomics results revealed that several differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including SlFAD2, SlALDH, SlCAS1, SlNSDHL, and SlDGKI, are directly related to the biosynthesis of fatty acids, meanwhile, SlRPS6KA, SlCAMK1, SlMYB3R1, and SlMYB3R5 serve as transcription factors that could potentially influence the regulation of fatty acid production. In the integration analysis of DARs and ATAC-seq, 13 genes were identified, which were shared by both DEGs and DARs-associated genes, including SlCAKM, SlRP2, SlSHOC2, SlTN, SlSGK2, SlHMP, SlOGT, SlclpB, and SlDNAAF3. Conclusions SlCAKM may act as a negative regulator of fatty acid and DHA synthesis, while SlSGK2 may act as a positive regulator, which requires further study in the future. These insights enhance our comprehension of the processes underlying fatty acid and DHA production in S. limacinum. They also supply a foundational theoretical framework and practical assistance for the development of strains rich in fatty acids and DHA.

Dunaliella salina is by far the most salt-tolerant organism and contains many active substances, including β-carotene, glycerol, proteins, and vitamins, using in the production of dried biomass or cell extracts for the biofuels, pharmaceutical formulations, food additives, and fine chemicals, especially β-carotene. We report a high-quality genome sequence of D. Salina FACHB435, which has a 472 Mb genome size, with a contig N50 of 458 Kb. A total of 30,752 protein-coding genes were predicted. The annotation results evaluated by BUSCO was shown that completeness was 91.0% and replication was 53.1%. The fragments were 6.3% and the deletions were 2.6%. Phylogenomic and comparative genomic analyses revealed that A. thaliana diverged from Volvocales about 448 million years ago, then Volvocales C. eustigma, D. salina, and other species diverged about 250 million years ago. High light could promote the accumulation of β-carotene in D. salina at a 13 d stage of culture. The enrichment of DEGs in KEGG, it notes that the predicted up-regulated genes of carotenoid metabolic pathway include DsCrtB, DsPDS, DsZ-ISO, DsZDS, DsCRTISO, DsLUT5, DsCrtL-B, and DsCCD8, while the predicted down-regulated genes include DsCrtF, and DsLUT1. The four genes that were both up-regulated and down-regulated were DsZEP, DsCrtR-b, DsCruA/P and DsCrtZ 4. The research results can provide scientific basis for the industrialization practice of D. salina.

IntroductionAcupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method that achieves therapeutic effects through the interaction of neurotransmitters and neural regulation. It is generally carried out manually, making the related process expert-biased. Meanwhile, the neural stimulation effect of acupuncture is difficult to track objectively. In recent years, virtual reality (VR) in medicine has been on the fast lane to widespread use, especially in therapeutic stimulation. However, the use of related technologies in acupuncture has not been reported.MethodsIn this work, a novel acupuncture stimulation technique using VR is proposed. To track the stimulation effect, the electroencephalogram (EEG) is used as the marker to validate brain activities under acupuncture.Results and discussionAfter statistically analyzing the data of 24 subjects during acupuncture at the “Zusanli (ST36)” acupoint, it has been determined that Virtual Acupuncture (VA) has at least a 63.54% probability of inducing similar EEG activities as in Manual Acupuncture (MA). This work may provide a new solution for researchers and clinical practitioners using Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) in acupuncture.

Abstract Ionic and electronic transport in electrodes is crucial for electrochemical energy storage technology. To optimize the transport pathway of ions and electrons, electrode materials are minimized to nanometer-sized dimensions, leading to problems of volumetric performance, stability, cost, and pollution. Here we find that a bulk hexagonal molybdenum oxide with unconventional ion channels can store large amounts of protons at a high rate even if its particle size is tens of micrometers. The diffusion-free proton transport kinetics based on hydrogen bonding topochemistry is demonstrated in hexagonal molybdenum oxide whose proton conductivity is several orders of magnitude higher than traditional orthorhombic molybdenum oxide. In situ X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculation reveal that the structural self-optimization in the first discharge effectively promotes the reversible intercalation/de-intercalation of subsequent protons. The open crystal structure, suitable proton channels, and negligible volume strain enable rapid and stable proton transport and storage, resulting in extremely high volumetric capacitance (~1750 F cm–3), excellent rate performance, and ultralong cycle life (>10,000 cycles). The discovery of unconventional materials and mechanisms that enable proton storage of micrometer-sized particles in seconds boosts the development of fast-charging energy storage systems and high-power practical applications.

COVID-19 is caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Current systemic vaccines generally provide limited protection against viral replication and shedding within the airway. Recombinant VSV (rVSV) is an effective vector which inducing potent and comprehensive immunities. Currently, there are two clinical trials investigating COVID-19 vaccines based on VSV vectors. These vaccines were developed with spike protein of WA1 which administrated intramuscularly. Although intranasal route is ideal for activating mucosal immunity with VSV vector, safety is of concern. Thus, a highly attenuated rVSV with three amino acids mutations in matrix protein (VSVMT) was developed to construct safe mucosal vaccines against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. It demonstrated that spike protein mutant lacking 21 amino acids in its cytoplasmic domain could rescue rVSV efficiently. VSVMT indicated improved safeness compared with wild-type VSV as the vector encoding SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. With a single-dosed intranasal inoculation of rVSVΔGMT-SΔ21, potent SARS-CoV-2 specific neutralization antibodies could be stimulated in animals, particularly in term of mucosal and cellular immunity. Strikingly, the chimeric VSV encoding SΔ21 of Delta-variant can induce more potent immune responses compared with those encoding SΔ21 of Omicron- or WA1-strain. VSVMT is a promising platform to develop a mucosal vaccine for countering COVID-19.

Aiming at the low observable target detection under sea clutter backgrounds, this paper emphasizes the exploration of distinguishable full-polarization features between target and sea clutter echoes. To overcome the shortcomings of the existing polarization feature-based methods, the full-polarization features of sea clutter are modeled and analyzed in detail by using Van Zyl polarization decomposition. Then, three polarimetric features (the relative surface scattering energy, the relative dihedral scattering energy and the relative diffuse scattering energy) are extracted from the fully polarimetric radar sea clutter echoes, which improve the feature differences between sea clutter and targets. And a tri-polarimetric feature detector with constant false alarm rate (CFAR) is constructed based on the fast convex hull learning algorithm. The experimental results on the real measured IPIX radar datasets prove that the proposed full-polarization feature detector obtains more competitive detection performance and lower computational complexity than the several existing feature-based detectors.

Despite global and Rwandan progress in reducing under-five mortality, the risk of children dying before their fifth birthday persists, necessitating intensified research on determinants. Thus, this study analyzed the birth history data to shed light on the underlying causes of under-five mortality in Rwanda. The study is a secondary analysis of data sourced from the 2020 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) cross-sectional design. Using SPSS, the data was cleaned, recoded, and weighted, with descriptive and inferential statistics applied. The dependent variable was the child's living status, while independent variables included socio-demographic, media exposure status of mothers, child, and environmental factors. A total of 10267 under-five children of all interviewed mothers were included in the final analysis, of which 12.3% (1260) died. As a highly regarded superconducting material with a concise layered structure, MgB2 has attracted significant scientific attention and holds vast potential for applications. However, its limited current-carrying capacity under high magnetic fields has greatly hindered its practical use. To address this issue, we have enhanced the superconducting performance of MgB2 by incorporating inhomogeneous phase nanostructures of p-n junctions with electroluminescent properties. Through temperature-dependent measurements of magnetization, electronic specific heat, and Hall coefficient under various magnetic fields, we have confirmed the crucial role of inhomogeneous phase electroluminescent nanostructures in improving the properties of MgB2. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of electroluminescent inhomogeneous phases effectively enhances the superconducting performance of MgB2. Moreover, by controlling the size of the electroluminescent inhomogeneous phases and optimizing grain connectivity, density, and microstructural uniformity, we can further improve the critical temperature (TC) and flux-pinning capability of MgB2 superconducting materials. Comprehensive studies on the physical properties of MgB2 superconducting structures added with p-n junction electroluminescent inhomogeneous phases also confirm the general effectiveness of electroluminescent inhomogeneous phases in enhancing the performance of superconducting materials.

Abstract Background In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has evolved from an alternative to a necessity in older adults for health, medical care, and social interaction. Upper limb (UL) motor skill, is an important ability in manipulating VR systems and represents the brain’s regulation of movements using the UL muscles. In this study, we used a haptic-feedback Virtual Box and Block Test (VBBT) system and an Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) to examine age-related differences in UL motor performance and intrinsic motivation in VR use. The findings will be helpful for the development of VR applications for older adults. Methods In total, 48 young and 47 older volunteers participated in our study. The parameters including VBBT score, number of velocity peaks, velocity, grasping force and trajectory length were calculated to represent the task performance, manual dexterity, coordination, perceptive ability and cognitive ability in this study. To improve wheel trafficability in soft and muddy soils such as paddy fields, a bionic walking wheel is designed based on the structural morphology and movement mode of the feet of waders living in marshes and mudflats, similar to the muddy soil of paddy fields. The bionic walking wheel adopts the arrangement of double-row wheel legs and staggered arrays to imitate the walking posture of waders. The two legs move alternately, cooperate with each other, and improve the smoothness of movement. The cam inside the bionic walking wheel is used to control the movement mode of the feet. The flippers open before touching the ground to increase the contact area and reduce sinking, and the toes bend and grip the ground while touching the ground to increase traction. Multi-rigid-body dynamics software (Adams View 2020) is used to simulate the movement of the wheel during the wading process, and the movement coordination and interference between the wheel legs are analyzed. The simulation results show that there is no interference between the parts and that the movement smoothness is good. The interaction between the bionic walking wheel and muddy soil was analyzed via coupled EDEM–ADAMS simulation, and the simulation analysis and experiments were conducted and compared with those for a common paddy wheel. The results showed that the bionic walking wheel designed in this paper improved the drawbar pull by 113.56% compared with that of a common paddy wheel and had better anti-sinking performance. By analyzing the effect of toe grip on traction, it was found that the soil under the feet can be disturbed to provide greater traction when the toe is bent downward. This study provides a reference for improving the trafficability of walking mechanisms in soft and muddy soils, such as paddy fields.

BackgroundLung cancer is a significant health concern in China. There is limited available data of its burden and trends. This study aims to evaluate the trends of lung cancer across different age groups and genders in China and the Group of Twenty (G20) countries, explore the risk factors, and predict the future trends over a 20-year period.MethodsThe data were obtained from the GBD study 2019. The number of cases, age standardized rate (ASR), and average annual percentage changes (AAPC) were used to estimate the trend in lung cancer by age, gender, region and risk factor. The trend of lung cancer was predicted by autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model by the “xtarimau” command. The joinpoint regression analysis was conducted to identify periods with the highest changes in incidence and mortality. Additionally, the relationship between AAPCs and socio-demographic index (SDI) was explored.ResultsFrom 1990 to 2019, both the incidence and mortality of lung cancer in China and G20 significantly increased, with China experiencing a higher rate of increase. The years with the highest increase in incidence of lung cancer in China were 1998-2004 and 2007-2010. Among the G20 countries, the AAPC in incidence and mortality of lung cancer in the Republic of Korea was the highest, followed closely by China. Although India exhibited similarities, its AAPC in lung cancer incidence and mortality rates was lower than that of China. The prediction showed that the incidence in China will continue to increase. In terms of risk factors, smoking was the leading attributable cause of mortality in all countries, followed by occupational risk and ambient particulate matter pollution. Notably, smoking in China exhibited the largest increase among the G20 countries, with ambient particulate matter pollution ranking second.ConclusionLung cancer is a serious public health concern in China, with smoking and environmental particulate pollution identified as the most important risk factors. The incidence and mortality rates are expected to continue to increase, which places higher demands on China’s lung cancer prevention and control strategies. It is urgent to tailor intervention measures targeting smoking and environmental pollution to contain the burden of lung cancer.

Isochrysis galbana is considered an ideal bait for functional foods and nutraceuticals of humans because of its high fucoxanthin (Fx) content. However, multi-omics analysis of the regulatory networks for Fx biosynthesis in I. galbana has not been reported. In this study, we report a high-quality genome assembly of I. galbana LG007, which has a genome size of 92.73 Mb, with a contig N50 of 6.99 Mb and 14,900 protein-coding genes. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the monophyly of Haptophyta, with I. galbana sister to Emiliania huxleyi and Chrysochromulina tobinii. Evolutionary analysis revealed an estimated divergence time between I. galbana and E. huxleyi of ∼ 133 million years ago. Gene family analysis indicated that lipid metabolism-related genes exhibited significant expansion, including IgPLMT, IgOAR1, and IgDEGS1. Metabolome analysis showed that the content of carotenoids in I. galbana cultured under green light for 7 days was higher than that under white light, and β-carotene was the main carotenoid, accounting for 79.09% of the total carotenoids. Comprehensive multi-omics analysis revealed that the content of β-carotene, antheraxanthin, zeaxanthin, and Fx was increased by green light induction, which was significantly correlated with the expression of IgMYB98, IgZDS, IgPDS, IgLHCX2, IgZEP, IgLCYb, and IgNSY. These findings contribute to the understanding of Fx biosynthesis and its regulation, providing a valuable reference for food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract Nano‐biosensors that are composed of recognition molecules and nanomaterials have been extensively utilized in disease diagnosis, health management, and environmental monitoring. As a type of nano‐biosensors, molecular specificity field‐effect transistor (FET) biosensors with signal amplification capability exhibit prominent advantages including fast response speed, ease of miniaturization, and integration, promising their high sensitivity for molecules detection and identification. With intrinsic characteristics of high stability and structural tunability, aptamer has become one of the most commonly applied biological recognition units in the FET sensing fields. This review summarizes the recent progress of FET biosensors based on aptamer functionalized nanomaterials in medical diagnosis and environmental monitoring. The structure, sensing principles, preparation methods, and functionalization strategies of aptamer modified FET biosensors were comprehensively summarized. The relationship between structure and sensing performance of FET biosensors was reviewed. Furthermore, the challenges and future perspectives of FET biosensors were also discussed, so as to provide support for the future development of efficient healthcare management and environmental monitoring devices.

Virtual reality (VR) has been a promising tool for developing visuospatial tasks. Among visuospatial tasks, mental rotation tasks are widely used in the assessment of visuospatial ability. Males have a distinct advantage in mental rotation ability compared to females, yet it is generally produced by investigations based on two-dimensional (2D) images on a computer screen. Sex differences in mental rotation tasks with three-dimensional (3D) objects in VR were not fully investigated. It is unclear whether the male's advantages in 2D mental rotation tasks are weakened in 3D tasks. The aim of this study was to provide new insights into the understanding of sex differences in mental rotation tasks presented in VR. Here, we developed a VR mental rotation task (VR-MRT) using 3D objects presented by a head-mounted display (HMD) and used VR-based eye tracking and electroencephalography (EEG) to examine eye movements and neural oscillations for males and females. Our results showed that females preferred a piecemeal strategy compared to males, suggesting a significant sex difference in visual strategy. More importantly, we found no significant sex differences in alpha-band and beta-band oscillations related to rotation processes of VR-MRT. These findings indicated that sex differences in the VR-MRT were mainly attributed to the selection of visual strategy rather than the rotation processes. The study helps to comprehensively understand the dominant factors contributing to the sex differences in the VR-MRT.

Summary: In daily life, our brain needs to eliminate irrelevant signals and integrate relevant signals to facilitate natural interactions with the surrounding. Previous study focused on paradigms without effect of dominant laterality and found that human observers process multisensory signals consistent with Bayesian causal inference (BCI). However, most human activities are of bilateral interaction involved in processing of interhemispheric sensory signals. It remains unclear whether the BCI framework also fits to such activities. Here, we presented a bilateral hand-matching task to understand the causal structure of interhemispheric sensory signals. In this task, participants were asked to match ipsilateral visual or proprioceptive cues with the contralateral hand. Our results suggest that interhemispheric causal inference is most derived from the BCI framework. The interhemispheric perceptual bias may vary strategy models to estimate the contralateral multisensory signals. The findings help to understand how the brain processes the uncertainty information coming from interhemispheric sensory signals.

Clinical diagnosis of epilepsy significantly relies on identifying interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) in electroencephalogram (EEG). IED is generally interpreted manually, and the related process is very time-consuming. Meanwhile, the process is expert-biased, which can easily lead to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. In recent years, with the development of deep learning, related algorithms have been used in automatic EEG analysis, but there are still few attempts in IED detection. This study uses the currently most popular convolutional neural network (CNN) framework for EEG analysis for automatic IED detection. The research topic is transferred into a 4-labels classification problem. The algorithm is validated on the long-term EEG of 11 pediatric patients with epilepsy. The computational results confirm that the CNN-based model can obtain high classification accuracy, up to 87%. The study may provide a reference for the future application of deep learning in automatic IED detection.

Superconducting materials exhibit unique physical properties and have great scientific value and vast industrial application prospects. However, due to limitations, such as the critical temperature (TC) and critical current density (JC), the large-scale application of superconducting materials remains challenging. Chemical doping has been a commonly used method to enhance the superconductivity of B(P)SCCO. However, satisfactory enhancement results have been difficult to achieve. In this study, we introduce green-light GaN p-n junction particles as inhomogeneous phases into B(P)SCCO polycrystalline particles to form a smart meta-superconductor (SMSC) structure. Based on the electroluminescence properties of the p-n junction, the Cooper pairs were stimulated and strengthened to enhance the superconductivity of B(P)SCCO. The experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of inhomogeneous phases can indeed enhance the critical temperature TC, critical current density JC, and complete diamagnetism (Meissner effect) of B(P)SCCO superconductors. Moreover, when the particle size of the raw material of B(P)SCCO is reduced from 30 to 5 μm, the grain size of the sintered samples also decreases, and the optimal doping concentration of the inhomogeneous phases increases from 0.15 wt.% to 0.2 wt.%, further improving the superconductivity.

Abstract Background and aims Clarifying the association between 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and homocysteine and the effect pattern of methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T) may contribute to the management of homocysteine and may serve as a significant reference for a randomized controlled trial of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate intervention. This study aimed to reveal the association between these two biochemical indices. Methods Study population was drawn from the baseline data of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT), including 2328 hypertensive participants. 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and homocysteine were determined by stable-isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and automatic clinical analyzers, respectively. MTHFR C677T polymorphisms were detected using TaqMan assay. Multiple linear regression was performed to evaluate the association between serum 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and homocysteine. Results There was a significant inverse association between 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and homocysteine when 5-methyltetrahydrofolate was ≤ 10 ng/mL, and this association was modified by MTHFR C677T (per 1-ng/mL increment; All: β = − 0.50, P

Alien plant invaders are often considered to be more competitive than natives, and species-rich plant communities are often considered to be more resistant to invaders than species-poor communities. However, the competitive interactions between invaders and assemblages of different species richness are unlikely to be static over time (e.g. during a growth season). To test this, we grew five alien and five native species as invaders in a total of 21 artificial assemblages of one, two or four native competitor species. To test for temporal changes in the reciprocal effects of invaders and the competitor assemblages on each other, and how these depend on the species richness of the assemblages, we harvested plants at three growth stages (weeks 4, 8 and 12). We found that the invaders and competitor assemblages had negative effects on each other. Aboveground biomass of invaders was reduced by the presence of a competitor assemblage, irrespective of its species richness, and this difference gradually increased over time. Alien invaders accumulated more aboveground biomass than the native invaders, but only after 12 weeks of growth. Meanwhile, the invaders also negatively affected the biomass of the competitor assemblages. For multi-species assemblages, the increase in the negative effect of the presence of the invader occurred mainly between weeks 4 and 8, whereas it happened mainly between weeks 8 and 12 for the one-species assemblages. Our results suggest that although alien invaders are more competitive than native invaders, the competitive effects of the invaders on and their responses to native competitor assemblages changed over time, irrespective of the origin of the invaders.

IntroductionEye-tracking technology provides a reliable and cost-effective approach to characterize mental representation according to specific patterns. Mental rotation tasks, referring to the mental representation and transformation of visual information, have been widely used to examine visuospatial ability. In these tasks, participants visually perceive three-dimensional (3D) objects and mentally rotate them until they identify whether the paired objects are identical or mirrored. In most studies, 3D objects are presented using two-dimensional (2D) images on a computer screen. Currently, visual neuroscience tends to investigate visual behavior responding to naturalistic stimuli rather than image stimuli. Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology used to provide naturalistic stimuli, allowing the investigation of behavioral features in an immersive environment similar to the real world. However, mental rotation tasks using 3D objects in immersive VR have been rarely reported.MethodsHere, we designed a VR mental rotation task using 3D stimuli presented in a head-mounted display (HMD). An eye tracker incorporated into the HMD was used to examine eye movement characteristics during the task synchronically. The stimuli were virtual paired objects oriented at specific angular disparities (0, 60, 120, and 180°). We recruited thirty-three participants who were required to determine whether the paired 3D objects were identical or mirrored.ResultsBehavioral results demonstrated that the response times when comparing mirrored objects were longer than identical objects. Eye-movement results showed that the percent fixation time, the number of within-object fixations, and the number of saccades for the mirrored objects were significantly lower than that for the identical objects, providing further explanations for the behavioral results.DiscussionIn the present work, we examined behavioral and eye movement characteristics during a VR mental rotation task using 3D stimuli. Significant differences were observed in response times and eye movement metrics between identical and mirrored objects. The eye movement data provided further explanation for the behavioral results in the VR mental rotation task.

Objectives Based on the acknowledged organ-specific immune microenvironment, little is known regarding the efficacy of immunotherapy in patients with lung cancer according to metastatic sites. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) vs chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer with liver metastases (LM) or brain metastases (BM).Design Meta-analysis and systematic review.Data sources We systematically searched in electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science), up to 31 January 2022. We also reviewed the abstracts from major international conferences. Eligibility criteria were randomised controlled phase II or III trials reporting the overall survival (OS) or progression-free survival (PFS) of LM or BM subsets.Data extraction and synthesis Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs for OS and PFS were extracted and aggregated using a random-effects model.Results Twenty-four randomised controlled trials with available outcomes for patients with BMs or LMs were identified. A total of 1124 patients with BM and 2077 patients with LM were included in the analysis. The pooled OS HR of patients with LMs was 0.83 (95% CI 0.72 to 0.95), and that of patients without LM 0.73 (95% CI 0.69 to 0.79). LM was associated with less benefits from ICIs. In patients with BM treated with ICIs, the pooled OS HR compared with the control arms was 0.71 (95% CI 0.53 to 0.94). Subgroup analyses by histology suggested that only patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with BM could gain benefit from ICIs (HR 0.53, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.68). BM negatively influenced efficacy of immunotherapy in patients with small cell lung cancer.Conclusions Our results showed immunotherapy demonstrated efficacy in patients with lung cancer with LM and BM, survival benefits dominantly favoured patients with NSCLC. Patients with lung cancer with LM obtained less benefits from ICIs than those without. Therefore, organ-specific immunotherapeutic approaches should be considered.PROSPERO registration number CRD42020212797.

Isochrysis galbana, as a potential accumulator of fucoxanthin, has become a valuable material to develop functional foods for humans. Our previous research revealed that green light effectively promotes the accumulation of fucoxanthin in I. galbana, but there is little research on chromatin accessibility in the process of transcriptional regulation. This study was conducted to reveal the mechanism of fucoxanthin biosynthesis in I. galbana under green light by analyzing promoter accessibility and gene expression profiles. Differentially accessible chromatin regions (DARs)-associated genes were enriched in carotenoid biosynthesis and photosynthesis-antenna protein formation, including IgLHCA1, IgLHCA4, IgPDS, IgZ-ISO, IglcyB, IgZEP, and IgVDE. The motifs for the MYB family were also identified as candidates controlling metabolic regulation responses to green light culture of I. galbana, including IgMYB1, IgMYB2, IgMYB33, IgMYB42, IgMYB98, IgMYB118, and IgMYB119. The results of differential expression analysis and WGCNA showed that several genes or transcription factors (TFs) related to carotenoid metabolism and photosynthesis exhibited a higher expression level and were significantly upregulated in A-G5d compared with A-0d and A-W5d, including IgMYB98, IgLHCA1, IgLHCX2, IgLHCB4, and IgLHCB5. This suggests that upregulation of these genes by green light may be the key factor leading to fucoxanthin accumulation by regulating the photosynthesis-antenna protein pathway. An integrated analysis of ATAC-seq and RNA-seq showed that 3 (IgphoA, IgPKN1, IgOTC) of 34 DARs-associated genes displayed obvious changes in their chromatin regions in ATAC-seq data, suggesting that these genes specific for green light may play a key role in fucoxanthin biosynthesis in I. galbana through a complex regulatory network of multiple metabolic pathways interacting with each other. These findings will facilitate in-depth understanding the molecular regulation mechanisms of fucoxanthin in I. galbana and its role in response to green light regulation, providing technical support for the construction of high fucoxanthin content strains.

Abstract Background Oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios, is associated with chromosomal aberrations, particularly aneuploidy. However, its correlation with copy number variation (CNV) remains unclear. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 428 cases with an abnormal level of amniotic fluid, comprising of 139 cases of single ultrasound findings (SU group) and 289 cases of multiple ultrasound findings (MU group), by CNV sequencing (CNV‐Seq) and followed their pregnancy outcomes. Results The overall detection rate of clinically significant findings was 8%, with 5% in the SU group and 11% in MU group. Besides, 18 microdeletion/microduplication syndromes were detected, with the highest rate of renal cysts and diabetes syndrome (22%, 4/18). Pain is an integrative phenomenon coupled with dynamic interactions between sensory and contextual processes in the brain, often associated with detectable neurophysiological changes. Recent advances in brain activity recording tools and machine learning technologies have intrigued research and development of neurocomputing techniques for objective and neurophysiology-based pain detection. This paper proposes a pain detection framework based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) and deep convolutional neural networks (CNN). The feasibility of CNN is investigated for distinguishing induced pain state from resting state in the recruitment of 10 chronic back pain patients. The experimental study recorded EEG signals in two phases: 1. movement stimulation (MS), where induces back pain by executing predefined movement tasks; 2. video stimulation (VS), where induces back pain perception by watching a set of video clips. A multi-layer CNN classifies the EEG segments during the resting state and the pain state. The novel approach offers high and robust performance and hence is significant in building a powerful pain detection algorithm. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of our approach is 0.83 ± 0.09 and 0.81 ± 0.15, in MS and VS, respectively, higher than the state-of-the-art approaches. The sub-brain-areas are also analyzed, to examine distinct brain topographies relevant for pain detection. The results indicate that MS-induced pain tends to evoke a generalized brain area, while the evoked area is relatively partial under VS-induced pain. This work may provide a new solution for researchers and clinical practitioners on pain detection.

High-yield rice varieties with a suitable growth duration are required for mechanical transplanting in multiple cropping systems. Daily yield is an appropriate criterion for the selection of machine-transplanted rice varieties. The aim of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics and grain production in machine-transplanted medium indica hybrid rice with a high daily yield. We conducted a field experiment on 20 medium indica hybrid rice varieties in 2017 and 2018. Grain yield decreased significantly with growth duration between jointing and heading, but it increased with dry matter accumulation, growth rate between jointing and heading, dry matter partitioning to the stem plus sheath at heading, daily yield, and number of spikelets per panicle. Compared with the medium and low daily yield variety types, the high daily yield variety type increased shoot biomass by improving crop growth rate and dry matter accumulation amount between jointing and heading and after heading. The high daily yield variety type decreased the growth duration pre-heading and the proportions of dry matter partitioned to the leaf lamina at heading and maturity, but it also increased the post-heading accumulated dry matter in the grain and the remobilization of dry matter stored in the vegetative organs. Furthermore, the high daily yield variety type significantly increased the occurrence rate of tillers, which is beneficial for the formation of a larger panicle size and an increase in the grain-filling rate. These changes contributed to a 6.51–23.16% relative increase in grain yield of the high daily yield variety type. In conclusion, the selection of high daily yield indica hybrid rice varieties with shorter pre-heading growth duration, greater tiller occurrence rate and spikelet numbers per panicle, higher post-jointing growth rates and stem plus sheath dry matter accumulation at heading is suitable for machine-transplanted rice.

To select the appropriate polymer thin films for liquid oxygen composite hoses, the liquid oxygen compatibility and the cryogenic mechanical properties of four fluoropolymer films (PCTFE, ETFE, FEP and PFA) and two non-fluoropolymer films (PET and PI) before and after immersion in liquid oxygen for an extended time were investigated. The results indicated that the four fluoropolymers were compatible with liquid oxygen before and after immersion for 60 days, and the two non-fluoropolymers were not compatible with liquid oxygen. In addition, the cryogenic mechanical properties of these polymer films underwent changes with the immersion time, and the changes in the non-fluoropolymer films were more pronounced. The cryogenic mechanical properties of the two non-fluoropolymer films were always superior to those of the four fluoropolymer films during the immersion. Further analysis indicated that the fundamental reason for these changes in the cryogenic mechanical properties was the variation in the crystalline phase structure caused by the ultra-low temperature, which was not related to the strong oxidizing properties of the liquid oxygen. Analytical results can provide useful guidance on how to select the appropriate material combination to obtain a reasonable liquid oxygen composite hose structure.

Sepsis remains a major challenge owing to its severe adverse effects and high mortality, against which specific pharmacological interventions with high efficacy are limited. Mitigation of hyperactive inflammatory responses is a key factor in enhancing the likelihood of survival in patients with sepsis. The Aloe genus has several health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties. The toxicological implications of aloe-emodin (AE), extracted from various Aloe species, remain uncertain in clinical contexts. However, AE has been shown to inhibit inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide-induced mice, indicating its potential as a therapeutic approach for sepsis treatment. Nonetheless, there is a paucity of data regarding the therapeutic benefits of AE in the widely recognized cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis model, which is commonly used as the gold standard model for sepsis research. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of AE in the treatment of CLP-induced sepsis and investigates its underlying mechanism, along with the efficacy of postoperative AE treatment in mice with CLP-induced sepsis. The results of this study suggest that AE can mitigate sepsis in mice by diminishing systemic inflammation and regulating the gut microbiota. The study provides novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of AE.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is an important sugar-producing and energy crop worldwide. The sugar beet pure line IMA1 independently bred by Chinese scientists is a standard diploid parent material that is widely used in hybrid-breeding programs. In this study, a high-quality, chromosome-level genome assembly for IMA1was conducted, and 99.1% of genome sequences were assigned to nine chromosomes. A total of 35,003 protein-coding genes were annotated, with 91.56% functionally annotated by public databases. Compared with previously released sugar beet assemblies, the new genome was larger with at least 1.6 times larger N50 size, thereby substantially improving the completeness and continuity of the sugar beet genome. A Genome-Wide Association Studies analysis identified 10 disease-resistance genes associated with three important beet diseases and five genes associated with sugar yield per hectare, which could be key targets to improve sugar productivity. Nine highly expressed genes associated with pollen fertility of sugar beet were also identified. The results of this study provide valuable information to identify and dissect functional genes affecting sugar beet agronomic traits, which can increase sugar beet production and help screen for excellent sugar beet breeding materials. In addition, information is provided that can precisely incorporate biotechnology tools into breeding efforts.

Abstract As "molecular bridge," coupling agents can not only realize the covalent connection of composites, but also affect their properties, thus affecting the properties of devices based on them. Herein, leveraging differences in charge conduction properties of the (3‐aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane and 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(4‐aminophenyl)‐21H,23H‐porphine caused by conjugacy structural differences, two kinds of layer‐by‐layer assembled smart carbon materials with different electrical properties are obtained at the same reduction temperature. The two graphene ultrathin films are then “planted” on Si/SiO2 substrates, respectively, as semiconductor layer and source/drain electrodes to fabricate an ultra‐stable all‐graphene field effect transistor (AG‐FET). Enabled by the covalent functionalized configuration and the functionally diverse of coupling agents, the AG‐FET obtained by this simple method won the high electrical characteristics, the hole, electron mobility, and the shelflife could reach 3.79 cm2/(V·s), 3.78 cm2/(V·s), and 18 months, respectively. In addition, good material stability and excellent device structure endow the device exceptional stability, electrical stability, and solvent resistance, improving its application prospect in solution phase sensing/detection. Such characteristics could be used to sense, transduce, and respond to external stimuli, especially in solution phase to monitor the important analytes, such as Hg2+ in a flowing sewage environment. We believe that such easy‐to‐manufacture AG‐FETs with ultrahigh performance and ultrahigh stability could also show great application prospects in other significant fields.

Magnetoencephalography is a noninvasive neuromagnetic technology to record epileptic activities for the pre-operative localization of epileptogenic zones, which has received increasing attention in the diagnosis and surgery of epilepsy. As reported by recent studies, pathological high frequency oscillations (HFOs), when utilized as a biomarker to localize the epileptogenic zones, result in a significant reduction in seizure frequency, even seizure elimination in around 80% of cases. Thus, objective, rapid, and automatic detection and recommendation of HFOs are highly desirable for clinicians to alleviate the burden of reviewing a large amount of MEG data from a given patient. Despite the advantage, the performance of existing HFOs rarely satisfies the clinical requirement. Consequently, no HFOs have been successfully applied to real clinical applications so far. In this work, we propose a multi-head self-attention-based detector for recommendation, termed MSADR, to detect and recommend HFO signals. Taking advantage of the state-of-the-art multi-head self-attention mechanism in deep learning, the proposed MSADR achieves a more superior accuracy of 88.6% than peer machine learning models in both detection and recommendation tasks. In addition, the robustness of MSADR is also extensively assessed with various ablation tests, results of which further demonstrate the effectiveness and generalizability of the proposed approach.

In recent years, the Burden of Amplitudes and Epileptiform Discharges (BASED) score has been used as a reliable, accurate, and feasible electroencephalogram (EEG) grading scale for infantile spasms. However, manual EEG annotation is, in general, very time-consuming, and BASED scoring is no exception. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have proven their great potential in many EEG classification problems. However, very few research studies have focused on the use of CNNs for BASED scoring, a challenging but vital task in the diagnosis and treatment of infantile spasms. This study proposes an automatic BASED scoring framework using EEG and a deep CNN. The feasibility of using CNN for automatic BASED scoring was investigated in 36 patients with infantile spasms by annotating their long-term EEG data with four levels of the BASED score (scores 5, 4, 3, and ≤2). In the validation set, the accuracy was 96.9% by applying a multi-layer CNN to classify the EEG data as a 4-label problem. The extensive experiments have demonstrated that our proposed approach offers high accuracy and, hence, is an important step toward an automatic BASED scoring algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use a CNN to construct a BASED-based scoring model.

Currently, vision-related neuroscience studies are undergoing a trend from simplified image stimuli toward more naturalistic stimuli. Virtual reality (VR), as an emerging technology for visual immersion, provides more depth cues for three-dimensional (3D) presentation than two-dimensional (2D) image. It is still unclear whether the depth cues used to create 3D visual perception modulate specific cortical activation. Here, we constructed two visual stimuli presented by stereoscopic vision in VR and graphical projection with 2D image, respectively, and used electroencephalography to examine neural oscillations and their functional connectivity during 3D perception. We find that neural oscillations are specific to delta and theta bands in stereoscopic vision and the functional connectivity in the two bands increase in cortical areas related to visual pathways. These findings indicate that low-frequency oscillations play an important role in 3D perception with depth cues.

Abstract Background Polyploid species often originate recurrently. While this is well known, there is little information on the extent to which distinct allotetraploid species formed from the same parent species differ in gene expression. The tetraploid yarrow species Achillea alpina and A. wilsoniana arose independently from allopolyploidization between diploid A. acuminata and A. asiatica. The genetics and geography of these origins are clear from previous studies, providing a solid basis for comparing gene expression patterns of sibling allopolyploid species that arose independently. Results We conducted comparative RNA-sequencing analyses on the two Achillea tetraploid species and their diploid progenitors to evaluate: 1) species-specific gene expression and coexpression across the four species; 2) patterns of inheritance of parental gene expression; 3) parental contributions to gene expression in the allotetraploid species, and homeolog expression bias. Diploid A. asiatica showed a higher contribution than diploid A. acuminata to the transcriptomes of both tetraploids and also greater homeolog bias in these transcriptomes, possibly reflecting a maternal effect. Comparing expressed genes in the two allotetraploids, we found expression of ca. 30% genes were species-specific in each, which were most enriched for GO terms pertaining to “defense response”. Despite species-specific and differentially expressed genes between the two allotetraploids, they display similar transcriptome changes in comparison to their diploid progenitors. Conclusion Two independently originated Achillea allotetraploid species exhibited difference in gene expression, some of which must be related to differential adaptation during their post-speciation evolution. On the other hand, they showed similar expression profiles when compared to their progenitors. This similarity might be expected when pairs of merged diploid genomes in tetraploids are similar, as is the case in these two particular allotetraploids.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has rapidly spread and poses a major threat to public health worldwide. The whole genome sequencing plays a crucial role in virus surveillance and evolutionary analysis. In this study, five genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 were obtained from nasopharyngeal swab samples from Zhengzhou, China. Following RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis, multiplex PCR was performed with two primer pools to produce the overlapped amplicons of ~1,200 bp. The viral genomes were obtained with 96% coverage using nanopore sequencing. Abstract With the rapid development of different kinds of wearable electronic devices, flexible and high‐capacity power sources have attracted increasing attention. In this study, a facile strategy to fabricate Ni nanoparticles embedded in N‐doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (Ni@NCNTs) homogeneously coated on the surface of carbon fiber with a multistructural component of molybdenum carbide (MoC/Ni@NCNTs/CC) was synthesized. There are two forms of MoC in MoC/Ni@NCNTs/CC, including the MoC nanoclusters in a size of 2 to 4 nm anchored on Ni@N‐doped CNTs and the MoC nanoparticles as an interface between MoC/Ni@NCNTs and carbon cloth (CC). Multifunctional MoC/Ni@NCNTs/CC served as both positive and negative electrode and a heater in flexible supercapacitors and in wearable devices, which exhibited excellent electrochemical and heating performance. Besides, an all‐solid‐state supercapacitor consists of two pieces of MoC/Ni@NCNTs/CC that exhibited extraordinary energy storage performance with high‐energy density (78.7 µWh/cm2 at the power density of 2.4 mW/cm2) and excellent cycling stability (≈91% capacity retention after 8000 cycles). Furthermore, all‐solid‐state flexible supercapacitors were incorporated with an MoC/Ni@NCNTs/CC electrode into self‐heating flexible devices for keeping the human body warm. Thus, MoC/Ni@NCNTs/CC is a promising electrode material for flexible and wearable storage systems and heating electronic application.

Abstract Nanomaterials are known to exhibit a number of interesting physical and chemical properties for various applications, including energy conversion and storage, nanoscale electronics, sensors and actuators, photonics devices and even for biomedical purposes. In the past decade, laser as a synthetic technique and laser as a microfabrication technique facilitated nanomaterial preparation and nanostructure construction, including the laser processing-induced carbon and non-carbon nanomaterials, hierarchical structure construction, patterning, heteroatom doping, sputtering etching, and so on. The laser-induced nanomaterials and nanostructures have extended broad applications in electronic devices, such as light–thermal conversion, batteries, supercapacitors, sensor devices, actuators and electrocatalytic electrodes. Here, the recent developments in the laser synthesis of carbon-based and non-carbon-based nanomaterials are comprehensively summarized. An extensive overview on laser-enabled electronic devices for various applications is depicted. With the rapid progress made in the research on nanomaterial preparation through laser synthesis and laser microfabrication technologies, laser synthesis and microfabrication toward energy conversion and storage will undergo fast development.

The deposition of sulfur particles in gathering and transportation pipeline system can cause serious safety problems and economic losses. When the high sulfur content natural gas (HSCNG) flows through the throttle valve of the gathering and transportation system, it will cause the supersaturation of elemental sulfur in the gas phase, and then the sulfur crystal nuclei and sulfur particles will appear in the pipeline system. Studying the initial growth behavior of sulfur crystal nuclei and sulfur particles can lay a necessary prerequisite for the accurate prediction of sulfur particle deposition in high sulfur content natural gas gathering and transportation (HSCNGGT) pipelines. Based on the homogeneous nucleation theory in crystallization kinetics, a mathematical model of elemental sulfur nucleation was established. Taking the throttling condition in the process of HSCNGGT as an example, the effects of temperature, pressure and H2S concentration in HSCNG on the critical nucleation radius and nucleation rate of elemental sulfur were explored. The results show that: (1) after the supersaturation of elemental sulfur, sulfur crystal nuclei with nanoscale radius will be precipitated. The temperature and pressure after throttling have great influence on the nucleation radius, and the influence of H2S concentration on the nucleation radius is more complex. (2) The temperature, pressure and H2S concentration after throttling also have great influence on the nucleation rate. By solving the growth kinetics model of sulfur particles based on Brownian condensation, it is found that the nano-sized sulfur crystal nuclei can grow into micron-sized sulfur particles in a very short time.

The larger surface-to-volume ratio of the hierarchical nanostructure means it has attracted considerable interest as a prototype gas sensor. Both TiO2 and SnS2 can be used as sensitive materials for humidity sensing with excellent performance. However, TiO2-SnS2 nanocomposites are rarely used in humidity detection. Therefore, in this work, a new humidity sensor was prepared by a simple one-step synthesis process based on nano-heterostructures, and the humidity sensing performance of the device was systematically characterized by much faster response/recovery behavior, better linearity and greater sensitivity compared to pure TiO2 or SnS2 nanofibers. The enhanced sensitivity of the nanoheterostructure should be attributed to its special hierarchical structure and TiO2-SnS2 heterojunction, which ultimately leads to a significant change in resistance upon water molecule exposure. In consideration of its non-complicated, cost-effective fabrication process and environmental friendliness, the TiO2-SnS2 nanoheterostructure is a hopeful candidate for humidity sensor applications.

Abstract Background Colon cancer is the most common type of gastrointestinal cancer and has high morbidity and mortality. Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is the main pathological type of colon cancer, and much evidence has supported the correlation between the prognosis of COAD and the immune system. The current study aimed to develop a robust prognostic immune-related gene pair (IRGP) model to estimate the overall survival of patients with COAD. Methods The gene expression profiles and clinical information of patients with colon adenocarcinoma were obtained from the TCGA and GEO databases and were divided into training and validation cohorts. Immune genes were selected that showed a significant association with prognosis. Results Among 1647 immune genes, a model with 17 IRGPs was built that was significantly associated with OS in the training cohort. High-frequency oscillations (HFOs), observed within 80–500 Hz of magnetoencephalography (MEG) data, are putative biomarkers to localize epileptogenic zones that are critical for the success of surgical epilepsy treatment. It is crucial to accurately detect HFOs for improving the surgical outcome of patients with epilepsy. However, in clinical practices, detecting HFOs in MEG signals mainly depends on visual inspection by clinicians, which is very time-consuming, labor-intensive, subjective, and error-prone. To accurately and automatically detect HFOs, machine learning approaches have been developed and have demonstrated the promising results of automated HFO detection. More recently, the transformer-based model has attracted wide attention and achieved state-of-the-art performance on many machine learning tasks. In this paper, we are investigating the suitability of transformer-based models on the detection of HFOs. Specifically, we propose a transformer-based HFO detection framework for biomedical MEG one-dimensional signal data. For signal classification, we develop a transformer-based HFO (TransHFO) classification model. Then, we investigate the relationship between depth of deep learning models and classification performance. The experimental results show that the proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art HFO classifiers, increasing classification accuracy by 7%. Furthermore, we find that shallow TransHFO (< 10 layers) outperforms deep TransHFO models (≥10 layers) on most data augmented factors.

Cyclocarya paliurus, a well-known nutrient and beverage plant, is under development for use in functional health care products best and natural and organic foods. We hypothesis that the composition and metabolic accumulation of hypoglycemic nutrient metabolites exhibit significant differences depending on harvest time. Therefore, it is of great significance to establish the best harvest time for C. paliurus leaves for the further development of healthy teas and other products. However, the detail compositions and molecular mechanisms of nutrients biosynthesis in C. paliurus leaves during different harvest stages remain largely unclear. Metabolome analysis showed that a suitable leaf-harvesting strategy for C. paliurus could be in September or October each year due to the high content of hypoglycemic nutrient metabolites. We found that two of the seven differentially accumulated phenolic acid metabolites have a relatively good inhibitory effect on α-amylase, indicating that they may play a role in the hypoglycemic function. Combined analysis of coexpression, ceRNA network, and weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA) showed that several genes or transcription factors (TFs) in three modules correlated highly with hypoglycemic nutrient metabolites, including CpPMM, CpMan, CpFK, CpSUS, CpbglX, Cp4CL, CpHCT, and CpWRKY1. These findings help in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks of the hypoglycemic nutrient metabolites in C. paliurus leaves which are dependent on harvest time and provide theoretical guidance in the development of functional health care products and foods from C. paliurus.

Due to physical limitation in resolution of display device, it is usually very difficult to achieve a high spatial resolution and a high angular resolution simultaneously for a three-dimensional (3D) light field display. Here, a computational super-resolution full-parallax 3D light field display is demonstrated, which can achieve both high spatial resolution and angular resolution. The proposed display consists of a specially designed backlight unit with controlled scattering angle, two cascadedly arranged LCDs with a resolution of 3840 × 2160, an aberration-suppressed compound lens array, and a holographic functional screen. The optical image formation processing of the display is analyzed and modeled as a whole process, and the superresolution light field synthesis method is presented. By co-designing the optical elements with computation processing, our proposed display architecture can improve the spatial resolution and angular resolution with a factor of 2× in both horizontal and vertical directions, comparing with these of the conventional light field display with single LCD and standard lens array. Finally, a super-resolution full-parallax 3D light field display with a designed spatial resolution of about 640 × 360 in a display area of 21.5 inches and an angular resolution of 166 × 166 in a viewing angle of 45 × 45 degrees is constructed, and an excellent 3D visual experience with improved image quality can be perceived.

Characterization of structure-related variation in corneal biomechanical properties is important for the design of corneal implants with a controllable degradation. In the current study, we conducted an in-vitro inflation experiment on contact and structural-damaged porcine corneas and mapped the strain distribution during using digital image correlation (DIC) algorithm. The inflation experiment was performed with a pressure loading device, a steady-state pressure transducer and DIC system. Corneal samples with uniformly-distributed paint particles were fixed on the loading device, and then were subjected increasing pressure load through injection with a constant velocity (0.134 ​ml/min). Three-dimensional (3D) DIC algorithm was performed to present a map of the full-field strain distribution on the corneal surface. The results showed a significant difference in the strain distribution between the intact and damaged corneas. The time-strain history also exhibited differently when the two types of cornea samples were subjected to inflation. It indicated that the DIC technology is validated to characterize structure-related variation in corneal biomechanical properties.

Nagashima-type palmoplantar keratoderma (NPPK) is characterized by non-progressive, diffuse, and cross-gradient hyperkeratosis caused by mutations in the SERPINB7 gene on chromosome 18q21.33. Chromosome 18q deletion syndrome (18q- syndrome) is a terminal deletion or microdeletion syndrome characterized by intellectual disability and congenital malformations. This paper describes an 18-year-old man with palmoplantar keratoderma and diffuse white matter abnormalities in the brain. Trio-based exome sequencing (ES) revealed a suspected mosaic compound heterozygous mutation for c.796C>T (p.Arg266∗) in exon 8 inherited from the mother and a de novo exons 4–6 deletion of SERPINB7. Additional copy number variant (CNV) analysis of the ES data indicated a heterozygous gross deletion of 18q22.3-q23. The two SERPINB7 gene variants were verified by Sanger sequencing and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Finally, low-coverage whole-genome sequencing (WGS) confirmed the 18q22.3-q23 deletion and additionally detected a mosaic 18q21.33-q22.3 deletion, together explaining NPPK and the neurological phenotypes of the proband. The gross deletion of all exons of SERPINB7 was revealed for the first time. More rarely, c.796C>T (p.Arg266∗) was likely to be mosaic, while the exon deletion was mosaic. In conclusion, the combination of multiple molecular genetic testing methods provides comprehensive informative molecular findings and promotes the diagnosis of complex diseases, as in this case.
