29. Accessibility of Sporting Activities for Mainstreamed Students with Visual Impairment in Schools in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province

Abstract

This study investigated the accessibility of sporting activities for mainstreamed students with visual impairment in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province. The purpose of the study was to identify preparedness of institutions and sports clubs in catering for sporting activities for persons with visual impairment. The study also sought to examine barriers to participation in sports by persons with visual impairment. The descriptive survey design was employed in the study. The sample comprised twenty learners with visual impairment, ten adults, ten administrators, ten teachers and ten policy makers, bringing a total of sixty persons sampled for the study. Questionnaires and interviews were administered to this sample resulting in a quantitative and qualitative approach to the study. Results revealed that regular class teachers and coaches lacked adequate knowledge and skills in handling persons with visual impairment in sporting activities, and this resulted in persons with visual impairment being confined to a very limited number of sports disciplines. It also emerged that financial and material resources were inadequate, and that physical infrastructure was inaccessible to persons with visual impairment. It was recommended that there was need to avail resources, conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of sports for learners with visual impairment, to conduct in-service training and adapt sports facilities to accommodate persons with visual impairment.

Abstract

The article discusses the modification conducted on the flotation cells at the Kennecott Copperton concentrator, particularly on the installation of concentric circumferential launders and crowders to reduce froth transport time and distance between cells. Also cited are the improvements in copper and molybdenum flotation recoveries due to the modification, and the benefits of larger mechanical flotation cells in mineral processing.

36. EFFECT OF EARLY SEXUAL DEBUT ON HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Abstract

Early sexual debut is of major concern because it is a correlate for health and economic shocks experienced in adulthood. In South Africa, this concern has provided impetus for research directed at the HIV and AIDS epidemic, teenage pregnancy and the effect of adolescent sexual behaviour on persistence in school. Of interest to the present study is high school completion, which is a well-established empirical barometer of adult socioeconomic opportunities. Using data from the five waves of the Cape Area Panel Study (CAPS), this paper examines the association between sexual behaviours initiated in pre- and early adolescence and high school completion rates. The CAPS study is a longitudinal survey that was designed to investigate young people's (aged 14-22 years) educational attainment and sexual behaviours in Cape Town, South Africa. The sample was constituted from 3213 individuals who had initiated sex during their teenage years and the analysis was undertaken when the youngest cohort was aged 21, an age at which they should have completed high school if they were on time. Logistic regression models were fitted separately for males and females. Overall, the results reveal that early sexual debut is correlated with long-term negative educational outcomes. Individuals who experience early sexual debut are less likely to complete high school than their counterparts who make their sexual debut later on in life. This effect is worse for Africans, who also disproportionately have an earlier sexual debut than other race groups. Apart from race however, the findings also reinforce the effect of other demographic factors on high school completion, namely, place of residence and family socioeconomic status as measured by parental education and household income. Hence, early sexual debut adds another layer of inequality and worsens the plight of Africans, females, those living in rural areas and those who come from low-income families. Abstract

Current general purpose mobility solutions like Mobile-IP involve multiple router-crossings even when the mobile host moves within an intranet from one subnet of a router to another. An environment consisting of a large number of mobile hosts would congest the router causing hosts to experience high latency and jitter. This paper presents a mechanism to eliminate multiple router-crossings in a mobile intranet by making the routers aware of mobility, which reduces the load on the routers and the hand-off and data latency at the mobile hosts.

Abstract

The strategies for managing computer based geometry are described. The computer model of geometry is the basis for communication, manipulation, and analysis of shape information. The research on integrated programs for aerospace-vehicle design (IPAD) focuses on the use of data base management system (DBMS) technology to manage engineering/manufacturing data. The objectives of IPAD is to develop a computer based engineering complex which automates the storage, management, protection, and retrieval of engineering data. In particular, this facility must manage geometry information as well as associated data. The approach taken on the IPAD project to achieve this objective is discussed. Geometry management in current systems and the approach taken in the early IPAD prototypes are examined.

Abstract

General capabilities of data base management technology are described. Information requirements posed by the space station life cycle are discussed, and it is asserted that data base management technology supporting engineering/manufacturing in a heterogeneous hardware/data base management system environment should be applied to meeting these requirements. Today's commercial systems do not satisfy all of these requirements. The features of an R&D data base management system being developed to investigate data base management in the engineering/manufacturing environment are discussed. Features of this system represent only a partial solution to space station requirements. Areas where this system should be extended to meet full space station information management requirements are discussed.

Abstract

The strategies for managing Integrated Programs for Aerospace Design (IPAD) computer-based geometry are described. The computer model of geometry is the basis for communication, manipulation, and analysis of shape information. IPAD's data base system makes this information available to all authorized departments in a company. A discussion of the data structures and algorithms required to support geometry in IPIP (IPAD's data base management system) is presented. Through the use of IPIP's data definition language, the structure of the geometry components is defined. The data manipulation language is the vehicle by which a user defines an instance of the geometry. The manipulation language also allows a user to edit, query, and manage the geometry. The selection of canonical forms is a very important part of the IPAD geometry. IPAD has a canonical form for each entity and provides transformations to alternate forms; in particular, IPAD will provide a transformation to the ANSI standard. The DBMS schemas required to support IPAD geometry are explained.
