Abstract

Background: The dynamic risk outcome scales (DROS) was developed to assess treatment progress of clients with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning using dynamic risk factors. We studied the predictive value of the DROS on various classifications and severity levels of recidivism. Method: Data of 250 forensic clients with intellectual disabilities were linked to recidivism data from the Judicial Information Service in the Netherlands. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were used to determine the predictive values. Results: The DROS total score could not significantly predict recidivism. A DROS recidivism subscale predicted general, violent and other recidivism. These predictive values were comparable to those of a Dutch tool validated for risk assessment in the general forensic population. Conclusions: The DROS recidivism subscale predicted various classifications of recidivism better than chance. At present, the DROS appears to have no added value beyond the HKT-30 for the purpose of risk assessment.

Abstract

Background: The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Dynamic Risk Outcome Scales (DROS ), an instrument developed to measure dynamic risk factors in individuals with mild intellectual disabilities or borderline intellectual functioning (MID -BIF ) and externalizing (including offending-like) behaviour problems. Method: The sample consisted of 606 clients (86% male) from inpatient treatment wards at a facility for individuals with MID-BIF and externalizing behaviour problems. Results: The DROS showed an acceptable factor structure, good internal consistency, significant test-retest reliability and fair to excellent inter-rater reliabilities for most subscales and total score. Compared to the Adult Behavior Checklist (ABCL; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2003 "Manual for the ASEBA adult forms and profiles." Burlington, VT: University of Vermont, Research Center for Children, Youth, & Families), the DROS showed convergent and divergent validity, concurrent and longitudinal validity. Conclusions: The DROS is a reliable and valid instrument to measure dynamic risk factors in clients with MID-BIF. Future research on the DROS will focus on the assessment of recidivism and the inclusion of internalizing problems.

Abstract

Background: The Dynamic Risk Outcome Scales (DROS) was developed to assess treatment progress of patients with mild intellectual disability (MID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) and severe behavioral and/or psychiatric problems. Because of the focus on dynamic risk factors, practitioners also see this instrument as a tool for risk assessment.
AIM: To investigate the predictive value of the DROS on different classifications and severities of recidivism.
METHOD: DROS data from the routine outcome monitoring (ROM) of 250 forensic patients with MID-BIF who were discharged between 2007 and end of 2014 were linked to recidivism data from the Judicial Information Service.
RESULTS: The DROS total score predicted general, violence and sexual recidivism better than chance (AUCs > 0.58), although the effect was small. A DROS-recidivism subscale predicted general, violence and other recidivism with a medium to large effect (AUCs > 0.67). The predictive values of the DROS total score and DROS-recidivism subscale were comparable to those of the Historic, Clinical, Future (in Dutch: HKT)-30.
CONCLUSION: The DROS total score and DROS-recidivism subscale predict different classifications of recidivism better than chance. However, for risk assessment the DROS appears to have no added value to the HKT-30.

Doel: De voorspellende waarde onderzoeken van de DROS op verschillende classificaties en ernst van recidive. Methode: DROS-scores uit de routine outcome monitoring (ROM) van 250 forensische patiënten met een lvb die uitstroomden tussen 2007 en eind 2014 werden gekoppeld aan recidivegegevens van de Justitiële Informatie Dienst. Resultaten: De DROS-totaalscore voorspelde algemene, geweld- en seksuele recidive beter dan kans (AUC's > 0,58), maar het effect was klein. Een DROS-recidivesubschaal voorspelde algemene, geweld en overige recidive met een middelgroot tot groot effect (AUC's > 0,67). De voorspellende waarden van de dros-totaalscore en DROS-recidivesubschaal waren in dit onderzoek vergelijkbaar met die van de Historisch, Klinisch, Toekomstig (HKT)-30, een risicotaxatie-instrument. Conclusie: De DROS-totaalscore en DROS-recidivesubschaal voorspellen verschillende recidiveclassificaties beter dan kans, maar voor risicotaxatie-doeleinden lijkt de DROS geen meerwaarde te hebben ten opzichte van de HKT-30.

This review article discusses Lotte Dros-Hendriks’ PhD thesis ‘Not another book on Verb Raising’ (2018), part of which is also published in Linguistic Variation 18 (p. 145-197) as: Sjef Barbiers, Hans Bennis, and Lotte Dros-Hendriks ‘Merging verb cluster variation’. The book provides a simple, principled account for the geographical distribution of the various word orders found in so-called “verb” clusters in the Dutch dialects. It will be shown, however, that the account is based on a number of controversial and insufficiently motivated premises. This article raises a number of potential problems for these premises, which should find a satisfactory solution before we can wholeheartedly adopt the core insights provided by this interesting work.
