Neutrino beams obtained from proton accelerators were first operated in 1962. Since then, neutrino beams have been intensively used in particle physics and evolved in many different ways. We describe the characteristics of various neutrino beams, relating them to the historical development of the physics studies and discoveries. Abstract

The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We have measured the cross section for inverse muon decay in the CERN neutrino wide band beam. From 4808 events observed in the CHARM II detector we derived for the Born term of the asymptotic cross section slope the result (18.16±1.36) × 10 −42 cm 2 GeV −1 . This cross section is in good agreement with the standard model prediction and allows to constrain the scalar coupling of the electron and muon to their neutrinos to | g LL S | 2

Abstract

We report on the first observation of neutrino induced production of muon pairs in the electromagnetic field of a nucleus. The data has been obtained using the CHARM II detector exposed to the CERN wideband neutrino and antineutrino beams. A clear signal of 55 ± 16 events is seen in a sample of dimuons of opposite charge without visible recoil at the vertex. The cross section is determined and found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction.

Abstract

The CHORUS calorimeter is a large scale application of the lead-scintillating fibre calorimetry technique for high energy physics experiments. It uses 1450 km of fibres for a total calorimeter weight of 110 tons. We report here about the time stability of the scintillating fibres performances over five years of data taking in the CERN-WANF neutrino beam. The identification capability of particles produced in neutrino interactions is discussed. The identification algorithm is based on a neural network approach.

Abstract

Measurements of coherent π0 production by muon-neutrinos and antineutrinos on nuclei in marble have been carried out using the CHARM neutrino detector in the CERN-SPS neutrino wide-band beam. We determined the cross sections σ ν = (96±42)×10 −40 cm 2 and σ ν = (79±26)×10 −40 cm 2 per average marble nucleus. Comparing these experimental results to theoretical predictions we evaluated the isovector axial vector neutral-current coupling constant ∣β∣ = 1.08±0.24, averaged over the neutrino and the antineutrino results, and found agreement with the prediction of the standard model, β = 1.0. From the ratio of coherent π0 production by neutral-current interactions observed in this experiment and of coherent π− production by charged-current interactions of antineutrinos measured in BEBC a value of ∣β∣ = 1.10±0.23 is derived.

Abstract

Calorimeters have been used extensively for the study of neutrino interactions in the last decade. This paper describes the need for calibration of such calorimeters and how this was realized for the case of the CHARM fine-grained calorimeter. The energy and spatial response of the calorimeter to both hadronic and electromagnetic showers was measured in π and electron beams from 5 to 140 GeV. The results and resolutions are presented.

Abstract

A search for fractionally chargedQ=1/3 (2/3) particles of different properties of interaction produced in (anti)neutrino-nucleus and in protonnucleus collisions was performed using the scintillator system of the CHARM neutrino detector at the CERN SPS. No events of the cases considered were found. In (anti)neutrino beams production was found to be less than a few times 10−5 per interaction of a beam particle. In a proton beam an upper limit on the production cross section of ∼10−40 cm2 was obtained.

Abstract

The ratio of the coupling strengths of electron- and muon-neutrinos to the neutral weak current, derived from measurements of total semileptonic neutrino cross sections on an isoscalar target, is reported on. Using an enriched electron-neutrino beam with equal fluxes of νe and ν e produced by dumping the 400 GeV on beam of the CERN-SPS into thick copper targets (beam-dump), σ( NC ( (−) ν e ))/σ( CC ( (−) ν e )) = 0.406 −0.135 +0.145 is measured. Combining this value with the re we obtained in an exposure to a narrow band neutrino beam, the ratio of the coupling constants g ν e ν e /gνμvμ = =1.05−0.18+0.15 is derived, in good agreement with universal coupling strength of the electron- and muon-neutrino to the neutral weak current.
