Abstract In recent years, lightwave has stood out as an ultrafast, non-contact control knob for developing compact superconducting circuitry. However, the modulation efficiency is limited by the low photoresponse of superconductors. Plasmons, with the advantages of strong light-matter interaction, present a promising route to overcome the limitations. Here we achieve effective modulation of superconductivity in thin-film NbSe2 via near-field coupling to plasmons in gold nanoparticles. Upon resonant plasmon excitation, the superconductivity of NbSe2 is substantially suppressed. The modulation factor exceeds 40% at a photon flux of 9.36 × 1013 s−1mm−2, and the effect is significantly diminished for thicker NbSe2 samples. Our observations can be theoretically interpreted by invoking the non-equilibrium electron distribution in NbSe2 driven by the plasmon-associated evanescent field. Finally, a reversible plasmon-driven superconducting switch is realized in this system. These findings highlight plasmonic tailoring of quantum states as an innovative strategy for superconducting electronics.

The traditional complications of diabetes are well known and continue to pose a considerable burden to millions of people with diabetes mellitus (DM). With the continuous accumulation of medical data and technological advances, artificial intelligence has shown great potential and advantages in the prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of DM. When DM is diagnosed, some subjective factors and diagnostic methods of doctors will have an impact on the diagnostic results, so the use of artificial intelligence for fast and effective early prediction of DM patients can provide decision-making support to doctors and give more accurate treatment services to patients in time, which is of great clinical medical significance and practical significance. In this paper, an adaptive Stacking ensemble model is proposed based on the theory of “error-ambiguity decomposition,” which can adaptively select the base classifiers from the pre-selected models. The adaptive Stacking ensemble model proposed in this paper is compared with KNN, SVM, RF, LR, DT, GBDT, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, MLP and traditional Stacking ensemble models. The results showed that the adaptive Stacking ensemble model achieved the best performance in five evaluation metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, F1 value and AUC value, which were 0.7559, 0.7286, 0.8132, 0.7686 and 0.8436. The model can effectively predict DM patients and provide a reference value for the screening and diagnosis of clinical DM.

Cognitive dysfunction is a core symptom common in psychiatric disorders including depression that is primarily managed by antidepressants lacking efficacy in improving cognition. In this study, we report a novel dual serotonin transporter and voltage-gated potassium Kv7/KCNQ/M-channel inhibitor D01 (a 2-methyl-3-aryloxy-3-heteroarylpropylamines derivative) that exhibits both anti-depression effects and improvements in cognition. D01 inhibits serotonin transporters (Ki = 30.1 ± 6.9 nmol/L) and M channels (IC50 = 10.1 ± 2.4 μmol/L). D01 also reduces the immobility duration in the mouse FST and TST assays in a dose-dependent manner without a stimulatory effect on locomotion. Intragastric administrations of D01 (20 and 40 mg/kg) can significantly shorten the immobility time in a mouse model of chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced depression-like behavior. Additionally, D01 dose-dependently improves the cognitive deficit induced by CRS in Morris water maze test and increases the exploration time with novel objects in normal or scopolamine-induced cognitive deficits in mice, but not fluoxetine. Furthermore, D01 reverses the long-term potentiation (LTP) inhibition induced by scopolamine. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that D01, a dual-target serotonin reuptake and M channel inhibitor, is highly effective in the treatment-resistant depression and cognitive deficits, thus holding potential for development as therapy of depression with cognitive deficits.

Abstract Some plant sensor nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) receptors detect pathogen effectors through their integrated domains (IDs). Rice RGA5 sensor NLR recognizes its corresponding effectors AVR-Pia and AVR1-CO39 from the blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae through direct binding to its heavy metal-associated (HMA) ID to trigger the RGA4 helper NLR-dependent resistance in rice. Here, we report a mutant of RGA5 named RGA5HMA5 that confers complete resistance in transgenic rice plants to the M. oryzae strains expressing the noncorresponding effector AVR-PikD. RGA5HMA5 carries three engineered interfaces, two of which lie in the HMA ID and the other in the C-terminal Lys-rich stretch tailing the ID. However, RGA5 variants having one or two of the three interfaces, including replacing all the Lys residues with Glu residues in the Lys-rich stretch, failed to activate RGA4-dependent cell death of rice protoplasts. Altogether, this work demonstrates that sensor NLRs require a concerted action of multiple surfaces within and outside the IDs to both recognize effectors and activate helper NLR-mediated resistance, and has implications in structure-guided designing of sensor NLRs.

The main components of sandalwood heartwood essential oil are terpenoids, approximately 80% of which are α-santalol and β-santalol. In the synthesis of the main secondary metabolites of sandalwood heartwood, the key gene, santalene synthase (SaSSY), can produce α-santalene and β-santalene by catalyzed (E, E)-FPP. Furthermore, santalene is catalyzed by the cytochrome monooxygenase SaCYP736A167 to form sandalwood essential oil, which then produces a fragrance. However, the upstream regulatory mechanism of the key gene santalene synthase remains unclear. In this study, SaSSY (Sal3G10690) promoter transcription factors and SaSSY cis-elements were screened. The results showed that the titer of the sandalwood cDNA library was 1.75 × 107 CFU/mL, 80% of the inserted fragments identified by PCR were over 750 bp in length, and the positivity rate of the library was greater than 90%. The promoter region of the SaSSY gene was shown to have the structural basis for potential regulatory factor binding. After sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, we successfully obtained 51 positive clones and identified four potential SaSSY transcriptional regulators. Sal6G03620 was annotated as the transcription factor MYB36-like, and Sal8G07920 was annotated as the small heat shock protein HSP20 in sandalwood. Sal1G00910 was annotated as a hypothetical protein of sandalwood. Sal4G10880 was annotated as a homeobox-leucine zipper protein (ATHB-15) in sandalwood. In this study, a cDNA library of sandalwood was successfully constructed using a yeast one-hybrid technique, and the transcription factors that might interact with SaSSY gene promoters were screened. This study provides a foundation for exploring the molecular regulatory mechanism involved in the formation of sandalwood heartwood.

Botryosphaeria dothidea infects hundreds of woody plants and causes a severe economic loss to apple production. In this study, we characterized BdLM1, a protein from B. dothidea that contains one LysM domain. BdLM1 expression was dramatically induced at 6 h post-inoculation in wounded apple fruit, strongly increased at 7 d post-inoculation (dpi), and peaked at 20 dpi in intact shoots. The knockout mutants of BdLM1 had significantly reduced virulence on intact apple shoots (20%), wounded apple shoots (40%), and wounded apple fruit (40%). BdLM1 suppressed programmed cell death caused by the mouse protein BAX through Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana, reduced H2O2 accumulation and callose deposition, downregulated resistance gene expression, and promoted Phytophthora nicotianae infection in N. benthamiana. Moreover, BdLM1 inhibited the active oxygen burst induced by chitin and flg22, bound chitin, and protected fungal hyphae against degradation by hydrolytic enzymes. Taken together, our results indicate that BdLM1 is an essential LysM effector required for the full virulence of B. dothidea and that it inhibits plant immunity. Moreover, BdLM1 could inhibit chitin-triggered plant immunity through a dual role, i.e., binding chitin and protecting fungal hyphae against chitinase hydrolysis.

Abstract Ubiquitination is an important modification process in eukaryotic organisms, and ubiquitin ligase (E3) is the most diversified component of this system. APIP6 (AvrPiz-t interacting protein 6) is one of the E3s of rice, and is involved in the recognition of AvrPiz-t, one effector from the pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, for the initiation of host defense against M. oryzae. However, the structural detail of how APIP6 performs its function remains elusive. Here, we present crystal structure of the RING domain (i.e., the E2-interaction domain) of APIP6 (APIP6-RING). APIP6-RING exists as a homodimer in crystal packing, in solution and in vivo. APIP6-RING consists of one β hairpin and one α helix, and β hairpins of two APIP6-RING molecules interact with each other in a novel ‘shoulder-to-shoulder’ mode to form a β sheet, and also rendering APIP6-RING to form a homodimer. Hydrogen bonds play a major role in the dimer formation of APIP6-RING, while hydrophobic-intermolecular interactions are inconspicuous. Due to the interaction mode between RING-type E3 and E2 is generally conserved, we constructed and verified a model of APIP6-RING/E2 complex, and proposed a working model of APIP6 with E2, ubiquitin, and the substrate AvrPiz-t. Taken together, our research presents the first structure of plant simple RING-type E3 ligase that exists in an unreported dimerization manner, as well as a working model of APIP6.

Background The lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) -based second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been used for treating HIV/AIDS patients in China for more than 10 years, but post-therapy immunological non-response (INR) in these patients has been rarely studied. Objective To explore the prevalence and influencing factors of post-therapy INR in HIV/AIDS patients switching from first- to second-line ART. Plant nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins are immune sensors that detect pathogen effectors and initiate a strong immune response. In many cases, single NLR proteins are sufficient for both effector recognition and signaling activation. These proteins possess a conserved architecture, including a C-terminal leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domain, a central nucleotide-binding (NB) domain, and a variable N-terminal domain. Nevertheless, many paired NLRs linked in a head-to-head configuration have now been identified. The ones carrying integrated domains (IDs) can recognize pathogen effector proteins by various modes; these are known as sensor NLR (sNLR) proteins. Structural and biochemical studies have provided insights into the molecular basis of heavy metal-associated IDs (HMA IDs) from paired NLRs in rice and revealed the co-evolution between pathogens and hosts by combining naturally occurring favorable interactions across diverse interfaces. Focusing on structural and molecular models, here we highlight advances in structure-guided engineering to expand and enhance the response profile of paired NLR-HMA IDs in rice to variants of the rice blast pathogen MAX-effectors (Magnaporthe oryzae AVRs and ToxB-like). These results demonstrate that the HMA IDs-based design of rice materials with broad and enhanced resistance profiles possesses great application potential but also face considerable challenges.

ABSTRACT Blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae threatens rice production worldwide, and chemical control is one of the main methods of its management. The high mutation rate of the M. oryzae genome results in drug resistance, which calls for novel fungicide targets. Fungal proteins that function during the infection process might be potential candidates, and Mps1 (M. oryzae mitogen-activated protein kinase 1) is such a protein that plays a critical role in appressorium penetration of the plant cell wall. Here, we report the structure-aided identification of a small-molecule inhibitor of Mps1. High-throughput screening was performed with Mps1 against a DNA-encoded compound library, and one compound, named A378-0, with the best performance was selected for further verification. A378-0 exhibits a higher binding affinity than the kinase cosubstrate ATP and can inhibit the enzyme activity of Mps1. Cocrystallization of A378-0 with Mps1 revealed that A378-0 binds to the catalytic pocket of Mps1, while the three ring-type substructures of A378-0 constitute a triangle that squeezes into the pocket. In planta assays showed that A378-0 could inhibit both the appressorium penetration and invasive growth but not the appressorium development of M. oryzae, which is consistent with the biological function of Mps1. Furthermore, A378-0 exhibits binding and activity inhibition abilities against Mpk1, the Mps1 ortholog of the soilborne fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum. Collectively, these results show that Mps1 as well as its orthologs can be regarded as fungicide targets, and A378-0 might be used as a hit compound for the development of a broad-spectrum fungicide. IMPORTANCE M. oryzae is the causal agent of rice blast, one of the most devastating diseases of cultivated rice. Chemical control is still the main strategy for its management, and the identification of novel fungicide targets is indispensable for overcoming existing problems such as drug resistance and food safety. With a combination of structural, biochemical, and in planta assays, our research shows that Mps1 may serve as a fungicide target and confirms that compound A378-0 binds to Mps1 and possesses bioactivity in inhibiting M. oryzae virulence. As fungal orthologs of Mps1 are conserved, A378-0 may serve as a hit for broad-spectrum fungicide development, as evidenced with Mpk1, the Mps1 ortholog of F. oxysporum. Additionally, A378-0 contains a novel chemical scaffold that has not been reported in approved kinase inhibitors, suggesting its potential to be considered the basis for the development of other kinase inhibitors.

Abstract The sub‐nanometer‐diameter transitional‐metal chalcogenides (M6X6) molecular wires are ideal 1D quantum systems. The electronic properties of such system are very sensitive to the interface interaction and local imperfection. Here, the atomic structure and local electronic structure of van der Waals (vdW) stacking Mo6Te6 nanowires fabricated by using molecular beam epitaxy are reported. Atomic‐resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurement shows that the vdW interface distance varies from 0.71 to 1.05 nm when Mo6Te6 wires stacked on graphite, MoTe2, and Mo6Te6 surfaces. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy confirmed the 1D quantum effect of van Hove singularity and Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid behavior at 77.8 K. Single Te vacancies and their effect to the local structure distortion are observed as well. These observations shed light on the local structure and quantum effects of the M6X6 nanowire materials, which may find applications in future electronic devices.

Restoring vegetation on waste dumps is imperative because soil erosion heavily impacts these areas and creates erosion micro-topographies, including bare slopes, rills, ephemeral gullies, and deposit bodies. These micro-topographies may affect seedling emergence by forming special micro-habitats, although the mechanism is vague. This study determined the substrate chemical (i.e., pH and electrical conductivity) and physical (i.e., capillary porosity, capillary water content, and mechanical composition) properties of different micro-topographies. In addition, the temporal dynamics of micro-climates (i.e., air temperature and air humidity), substrate hydrothermal conditions (i.e., substrate temperature and water content), and seedling emergence were investigated. Redundancy analysis (RDA), random forest (RF), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were then used to identify the main factors affecting seedling emergence and clarify the relationships among the environmental conditions. Our results demonstrate that seedling densities in the rill, ephemeral gully, and deposit body were 1.78 times, 3.42 times, and 3.97 times higher than those on the bare slope, respectively. More species were found in the rill, ephemeral gully, and deposit body (Artemisia annua, Salsola collina, Setaria viridis, and Tribulus terrestris) than on the bare slope (Salsola collina). The main factors affecting seedling emergence were air humidity, substrate temperature, and substrate water content. The mechanical composition may have affected substrate water content during the initial stage of seedling emergence and substrate temperature during the entire period. We demonstrate that the ephemeral gully and deposit body may provide micro-habitats with a lower substrate temperature and higher substrate water content, which are favorable to seedling emergence, thus guiding vegetation restoration on waste dumps or other disturbed areas.

Despite the high prevalence of gastrointestinal tumors, early diagnosis and treatment of these tumors is limited by the lack of effective and specific biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Exosomes carry active molecules to mediate cell-to-cell communication, especially in the tumor microenvironment, and are promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets for cancer. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are stably enriched in exosomes and show a unique circular structure, high stability, conservation, and tissue specificity. Exosomal circRNAs play important roles in regulating cell proliferation, metastasis, angiogenesis, metabolism, and the immune microenvironment of gastrointestinal tumors and exhibit great potential as tumor biomarkers and anti-tumor targets or tools. This review briefly introduces the characteristics and functions of circRNAs and exosomes, and systematically describes the biological roles and mechanisms of exosomal circRNAs in gastrointestinal tumors. This article also summarizes the detection methodology of exosomal circRNAs and discusses their clinical significance as biomarkers and targets for gastrointestinal tumors.

Restricted by the cost of generating labels for training, semi-supervised methods have been applied to semantic segmentation tasks and have achieved varying degrees of success. Recently, the semi-supervised learning method has taken pseudo supervision as the core idea, especially self-training methods that generate pseudo labels. However, pseudo labels are noisy. In semi-supervised learning, as training progresses, the model needs to focus on more semantic classes and bias towards the newly learned classes. Moreover, due to the limitation of the amount of labeled data, it is difficult for the model to “stabilize” the learned knowledge. That raise the issue of the model forgetting previously learned knowledge. Based on this new view, we point out that alleviating “catastrophic forgetting” of the model is beneficial for enhancing the quality of pseudo labels, and propose a pseudo label enhancement strategy. In this strategy, the pseudo labels generated by the previous model are used to rehearse the previous knowledge. Additionally, conflict reduction is proposed to resolve the conflicts of pseudo labels generated from both the previous and current models. We evaluate our scheme on two general semi-supervised semantic segmentation benchmarks, and both achieve state-of-the-art performance. Our codes are released at https://github.com/wing212/DMT-PLE.

Flowering is an essential part of the productive process, and flowering time is determined by endogenous genetic components and many ambient factors. SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE (SVP), a MADS-box transcription factor, regulates floral transition by repressing floral integrator genes and is involved in ABA-mediated drought stress. In this study, we transformed the poplar (Populus) clone “84K” with the SVP-Like gene, while stable overexpression transgenic lines were obtained. Transcriptome analysis of the leaves of the transgenic lines and WT (Wide Type) poplars revealed that a total of 477 genes showed significantly altered expression, overexpressing SVL genes, including 342 upregulated and 135 downregulated genes. Ten subclusters in DEGs were analyzed, and KEGG terms of the largest subcluster were associated with two key pathways: hormone-related genes and glutathione metabolism. Meanwhile, many transcriptional factors were involved. Our results are helpful for in-depth analysis of the MADS transcriptional factor in poplars. This work provides the basis for studying woody plant growth, and development and molecular mechanisms responded to environmental stresses.

AREB/ABF/ABI5 (ABA-responsive element-binding protein/ABRE binding factors and ABA INSENSITIVE 5) transcription factors are involved in regulating the expression of ABA (abscisic acid)-related genes and improving plant adaptability to environmental stress. To explore the influence of AREB/ABF transcription factors on santalol synthesis, we conducted a genome-wide analysis of the AREB gene family in sandalwood, identified 10 SaAREB genes, and divided them into five subfamilies. We found that all SaAREB genes encoded unstable hydrophilic proteins and the subcellular localization prediction of SaAREBs was that they are located in the nucleus. AREB/ABF genes belong to the bZIP-A subfamily and we found that the 10 AREB proteins all contained bZIP (basic region leucine zipper) and four potential phosphorylation sites (RXXS/T). According to the collinearity analysis results, four of the SaAREB genes were involved in two fragment duplication events. Through qRT-PCR (real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR), we explored the expression profile of SaAREB in different tissues; the effects of ABA treatment and drought treatment on AREB transcription factors were predicted. From the expression of different tissues, we found that SaAREB1 not only responded to prolonged drought but also was highly expressed in stems. Moreover, SaAREB3, SaAREB7, and SaAREB8 specifically respond to ABA treatment. Based on RNA-seq (RNA sequencing) data, we found that SaAREB6 and SaAREB8 were highly expressed in the sapwood and transition regions. Regarding SaCYP736A167, as a key gene in santalol synthesis, its promoter contains the most ABRE cis-reactive elements. These results provide a basis for further analysis of the role of the Santalum album L. (S. album) ABRE/ABF/ABI5 genes in the formation of santalols.

Satellite remotely sensed solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is an effective index for detecting the ecosystem-level photosynthetic capacity, yet it remains poorly understood how vegetation photosynthesis responds to water constraints. This study determined the spatial–temporal changes and water constraints on vegetation photosynthesis based on the Self-Calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and global Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 SIF (GOSIF) data in the Yangtze River and Yellow River basin between 2000 and 2018. Abstract In a phase 1 randomized, single-center clinical trial, inactivated influenza virus vaccine delivered through dissolvable microneedle patches (MNPs) was found to be safe and immunogenic. Here, we compare the humoral and cellular immunologic responses in a subset of participants receiving influenza vaccination by MNP to the intramuscular (IM) route of administration. We collected serum, plasma, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells in 22 participants up to 180 days post-vaccination. Hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) titers and antibody avidity were similar after MNP and IM vaccination, even though MNP vaccination used a lower antigen dose. MNPs generated higher neuraminidase inhibition (NAI) titers for all three influenza virus vaccine strains tested and triggered a larger percentage of circulating T follicular helper cells (CD4 + CXCR5 + CXCR3 + ICOS + PD-1+) compared to the IM route. Our study indicates that inactivated influenza virus vaccination by MNP produces humoral and cellular immune response that are similar or greater than IM vaccination.

The use of seashells to replace traditional cement-based materials and study their adsorption capacity for pollutants can expand the functional engineering application range of cement-based materials. A large amount of seashell waste is produced in coastal areas every year. How to deal with and utilize this seashell waste is a common problem faced by coastal countries and regions. This paper first reviews the principles of adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms to demonstrate the adsorption mechanism of shell materials. Then the effects of pH, contact time, temperature, pollutant concentration and other factors on the adsorption of heavy metal ions and basic dyes to seashells are discussed. Finally, the relevant applications of seashells in the construction field are reviewed. The results showed that the optimal pH value in the process of seashell adsorption was 5–7, the active site on the surface of the seashell particles was limited, and that it would reach saturation at a certain concentration, but would not further increase with the increase of time. The active site area of the seashell would increase with the decrease of particle size, so the selection of seashell powder with small particle size was conducive to enhancing the absorption capacity and removal efficiency. The experimental use of seashells instead of cementitious materials or natural aggregates in cement-based materials showed good adsorption capacity and would have a wide range of application prospects in permeable concrete and architectural coatings. By analyzing the research progress on factors influencing seashell adsorption performance and the applications of seashell adsorption behaviors in cement-based materials, this paper could provide ideas and methods for the design of functional cement-based adsorption materials from multiple angles.

With the wide application of petroleum resources, oil substances have polluted the environment in every link from crude oil extraction to utilization. Cement-based materials are the main materials in civil engineering, and the study of their adsorption capacity for oil pollutants can expand the scope of functional engineering applications of cement-based materials. Based on the research status of the oil-wet mechanism of different kinds of oil-absorbing materials, this paper lists the types of conventional oil-absorbing materials and introduces their application in cement-based materials while outlining the influence of different oil-absorbing materials on the oil-absorbing properties of cement-based composites. The analysis found that 10% Acronal S400F emulsion can reduce the water absorption rate of cement stone by 75% and enhance the oil-absorption rate by 62%. Adding 5% polyethylene glycol can increase the oil–water relative permeability of cement stone to 1.2. The oil-adsorption process is described by kinetic and thermodynamic equations. Two isotherm adsorption models and three adsorption kinetic models are explained, and oil-absorbing materials and adsorption models are matched. The effects of specific surface area, porosity, pore interface, material outer surface, oil-absorption strain, and pore network on the oil-absorption performance of materials are reviewed. It was found that the porosity has the greatest influence on the oil-absorbing performance. When the porosity of the oil-absorbing material increases from 72% to 91%, the oil absorption can increase to 236%. In this paper, by analyzing the research progress of factors affecting oil-absorption performance, ideas for multi-angle design of functional cement-based oil-absorbing materials can be obtained.

Abstract Enhancing network feature representation capabilities and reducing the loss of image details have become the focus of semantic segmentation task. This work proposes the bilateral attention network for semantic segmentation. The authors embed two attention modules in the encoder and decoder structures . Specifically, high‐level features of the encoder structure integrate all channel maps through dense channel relationships learned by the channel correlation coefficient attention module. The positively correlated channels promote each other, and the negatively correlated channels suppress each other. In the decoder structure, low‐level features selectively emphasize the edge detail information in the feature map through the position attention module. The feature expression of semantic segmentation is improved by feature fusion of the two attention modules to obtain more accurate segmentation results . Finally, to verify the effectiveness of the model, the authors conduct experiments on the PASCAL VOC 2012 and Cityscapes scene analysis benchmark data sets and achieve a mean intersection‐over‐union of 74.92% and 66.63%, respectively.

Background and ObjectivesDiets containing red or processed meat are associated with a growing risk of digestive system cancers. Whether a plant-based diet is protective against cancer needs a high level of statistical evidence.MethodsWe performed a meta-analysis of five English databases, including PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science databases, and Scopus, on October 24, 2021 to identify published papers. Cohort studies or case-control studies that reported a relationship between plant-based diets and cancers of the digestive system were included. Summary effect-size estimates are expressed as Risk ratios (RRs) or Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals and were evaluated using random-effect models. The inconsistency index (I2) and τ2 (Tau2) index were used to quantify the magnitude of heterogeneity derived from the random-effects Mantel-Haenszel model.ResultsThe same results were found in cohort (adjusted RR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.78–0.86, P < 0.001, I2 = 46.4%, Tau2 = 0.017) and case-control (adjusted OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.64–0.77, P < 0.001, I2 = 83.8%, Tau2 = 0.160) studies. The overall analysis concluded that plant-based diets played a protective role in the risk of digestive system neoplasms. Subgroup analyses demonstrated that the plant-based diets reduced the risk of cancers, especially pancreatic (adjusted RR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.59–0.86, P < 0.001, I2 = 55.1%, Tau2 = 0.028), colorectal (adjusted RR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.69–0.83, P < 0.001, I2 = 53.4%, Tau2 = 0.023), rectal (adjusted RR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.78–0.91, P < 0.001, I2 = 1.6%, Tau2 = 0.005) and colon (adjusted RR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.82–0.95, P < 0.001, I2 = 0.0%, Tau2 = 0.000) cancers, in cohort studies. Fanconi anemia (FA) group D2 (FANCD2) is a ferroptosis-related gene crucial for DNA damage repair and negative ferroptosis regulation. Our study aimed to evaluate its prognostic value as well as its association with ferroptosis and immune infiltration in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Transcriptome sequencing data, clinical information, and immunohistochemistry data were collected from the TCGA, GEO, and HPA databases, respectively, for three independent cohorts. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess the correlations between FANCD2 expression and overall survival or clinicopathological parameters. cBioPortal was utilized to investigate the FANCD2 alteration status. Gene and protein networks based on FANCD2 interactions were generated using GeneMANIA and STRING, respectively. Based on the CancerSEA database, the function of FANCD2 was explored at the single-cell level. The relationships between FANCD2 expression levels and tumor-infiltrating immune cells and their equivalent gene signatures were analyzed using TIMER, GEPIA, TISIDB, and ssGSEA databases. CIBERSORT was used to analyze the relevance of the infiltration of 24 types of immune cells. The results revealed that FANCD2 expression was significantly upregulated in LUAD and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) tissues than that in normal tissues. Further, the overexpression of FANCD2 was closely associated with poor survival for Patients with LUAD but not for patients with LUSC. FANCD2 expression levels were related to tumor-infiltrating immune cells and their matching gene signatures, including CD8+ T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells (DC), and Th2 cells in cases of LUAD. Therefore, FANCD2 was identified as a crucial molecule underlying the synergistic effects of ferroptosis and immunotherapy for Patients with LUAD.

In the DCF framework, a crucial component except DCF trackers is the adopted feature map, especially when we need the tracker to be applied in practical. The powerful feature map from CNN achieves an outstanding performance when compared to the handcrafted feature (HOG, Color-Name), however, it makes the tracker slower and could not meet the need in the real-time scene. In this paper, we visualize the respective feature maps, filter, and location score from CNN, HOG and ColorName, to make a comparison. We also dig into the detail of the target label, for balance the accuracy and robustness of the tracker. Experiments on OTB-2015 show the performance loss from handcrafted feature is acceptable for the real-time application.

The background and scientific objectives of the Mars Climate Station (MCS) for Tianwen-1 are introduced, accompanied by a comparative review of the status of related meteorological observation missions and of advanced sensing technologies. As one of the China Tianwen-1 Mission’s principal scientific payloads, the MCS contains four measurement sensors and one electronic processing unit that are specially designed to measure local temperature, pressure, wind, and sound on the Martian surface. The MCS’s measurement principles, technical schemes, ground calibration techniques, and adaptability evaluation to the Mars surface environment of MCS are introduced in details. The conclusion presents measurement performance specifications of the MCS, based on ground test results, that will provide guidance to future research based on data from the Tianwen-1 and later Mars missions.

Understanding the time-lag responses of grassland productivity to climate change is crucial for revealing grassland ecosystem behavior, predicting future grassland productivity, and guiding animal husbandry practices. This study developed a new analytical method to examine lag effects of climate change by integrating three techniques of time-lag effect analysis, time-lag accumulation computation and partial least-square regression. Net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation was used as an evaluation indicator for grassland productivity. Based on the monthly scale of the continuous growing season (with a delay of 0–3 months), the effects of temperature and precipitation on grassland productivity of Inner Mongolia were assessed. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between the estimated NPP based on the CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) model and the MOD17A3-NPP data reached 0.949. Plant-specific Rac/Rop small GTPases, also known as Rop, belong to the Rho subfamily. Rac proteins can be divided into two types according to their C-terminal motifs: Type I Rac proteins have a typical CaaL motif at the C-terminal, whereas type II Rac proteins lack this motif but retain a cysteine-containing element for membrane anchoring. The Rac gene family participates in diverse signal transduction events, cytoskeleton morphogenesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and hormone responses in plants as molecular switches. S. album is a popular semiparasitic plant that absorbs nutrients from the host plant through the haustoria to meet its own growth and development needs. Because the whole plant has a high use value, due to the high production value of its perfume oils, it is known as the “tree of gold”. Based on the full-length transcriptome data of S. album, nine Rac gene members were named SaRac1-9, and we analyzed their physicochemical properties. Evolutionary analysis showed that SaRac1-7, AtRac1-6, AtRac9 and AtRac11 and OsRac5, OsRacB and OsRacD belong to the typical plant type I Rac/Rop protein, while SaRac8-9, AtRac7, AtRac8, AtRac10 and OsRac1-4 belong to the type II Rac/ROP protein. Tissue-specific expression analysis showed that nine genes were expressed in roots, stems, leaves and haustoria, and SaRac7/8/9 expression in stems, haustoria and roots was significantly higher than that in leaves. The expression levels of SaRac1, SaRac4 and SaRac6 in stems were very low, and the expression levels of SaRac2 and SaRac5 in roots and SaRac2/3/7 in haustoria were very high, which indicated that these genes were closely related to the formation of S. album haustoria. To further analyze the function of SaRac, nine Rac genes in sandalwood were subjected to drought stress and hormone treatments. These results establish a preliminary foundation for the regulation of growth and development in S. album by SaRac.

Auxin response factors (ARFs) are essential transcription factors in plants that play an irreplaceable role in controlling the expression of auxin response genes and participating in plant growth and stress. The ARF gene family has been found in Arabidopsis thaliana, apple (Malus domestica), poplar (Populus trichocarpa) and other plants with known whole genomes. However, S. album (Santalum album L.), has not been studied. In this study, we analyzed and screened the whole genome of S. album and obtained 18 S. album ARFs (SaARFs), which were distributed on eight chromosomes. Through the prediction of conserved domains, we found that 13 of the 18 SaARFs had three intact conserved domains, named DBD, MR, Phox and Bem1 (PB1), while the extra five SaARFs (SaARF3, SaARF10, SaARF12, SaARF15, SaARF17) had only two conserved domains, and the C-terminal PB1 domain was missing. By establishing a phylogenetic tree, 62 ARF genes in S. album, poplar and Arabidopsis were divided into four subgroups, named Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ. According to the results of collinearity analysis, we found that ten of the eighteen ARF genes were involved in five segmental duplication events and these genes had short distance intervals and high homology in the SaARF gene family. Finally, tissue-specific and drought-treatment expression of SaARF genes was observed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and six genes were significantly overexpressed in haustorium. Meanwhile we found SaARF5, SaARF10, and SaARF16 were significantly overexpressed under drought stress. These results provide a basis for further analysis of the related functions of the S. album ARF gene and its relationship with haustorium formation.

In this paper, by introducing the software-defined networking (SDN) controller, we conduct traffic scheduling under dual connectivity (DC) pattern to support handover management in the heterogeneous aeronautical network. First, we construct a stochastic optimization problem of handover overhead with queue backlog, under the condition of ensuring user fairness and limited resource constraints. Then, we utilize the Lyapunov optimization theory to transform the stochastic optimization problem into a deterministic optimization problem and propose feasible and optimal strategies. Finally, we verify the feasibility and effectiveness of those strategies on handover management by simulations in two different aeronautical scenarios.

Contextual information and the dependencies between dimensions is vital in image semantic segmentation. In this paper, we propose a multiple-attention mechanism network (MANet) for semantic segmentation in a very effective and efficient way. Concretely, the contributions are as follows: (1) a novel dual-attention mechanism for capturing feature dependencies in spatial and channel dimensions, where the adjacent position attention captures the dependencies between pixels well; (2) a new cross-dimensional interactive attention feature fusion module, which strengthens the fusion of fine location structure information in low-level features and category semantic information in high-level features. We conduct extensive experiments on semantic segmentation benchmarks including PASCAL VOC 2012 and Cityscapes datasets. Our MANet achieves the mIoU scores of 75.5% and 72.8% on PASCAL VOC 2012 and Cityscapes datasets, respectively. The effectiveness of the network is higher than the previous popular semantic segmentation networks under the same conditions.

Object detection is one of the key tasks in an automatic driving system. Aiming to solve the problem of object detection, which cannot meet the detection speed and detection accuracy at the same time, a real-time object detection algorithm (MobileYOLO) is proposed based on YOLOv4. Firstly, the feature extraction network is replaced by introducing the MobileNetv2 network to reduce the number of model parameters; then, part of the standard convolution is replaced by depthwise separable convolution in PAnet and the head network to further reduce the number of model parameters. Finally, by introducing an improved lightweight channel attention modul—Efficient Channel Attention (ECA)—to improve the feature expression ability during feature fusion. The Single-Stage Headless (SSH) context module is introduced to the small object detection branch to increase the receptive field. The experimental results show that the improved algorithm has an accuracy rate of 90.7% on the KITTI data set. Compared with YOLOv4, the parameters of the proposed MobileYOLO model are reduced by 52.11 M, the model size is reduced to one-fifth, and the detection speed is increased by 70%.

Salt stress is an adverse environmental factor for plant growth and development. Under salt stress, plants can activate the selective autophagy pathway to alleviate stress. However, the regulatory mechanism of selective autophagy in response to salt stress remains largely unclear. Here, we report that the selective autophagy receptor PagNBR1 (neighbor of BRCA1) is induced by salt stress in Populus. Overexpression of PagNBR1 in poplar enhanced salt stress tolerance. Compared with wild type (WT) plants, the transgenic lines exhibited higher antioxidant enzyme activity, less reactive oxygen species (ROS), and higher net photosynthesis rates under salt stress. Furthermore, co-localization and yeast two-hybrid analysis revealed that PagNBR1 was localized in the autophagosome and could interact with ATG8 (autophagy-related gene). PagNBR1 transgenic poplars formed more autophagosomes and exhibited higher expression of ATG8, resulting in less accumulation of insoluble protein and insoluble ubiquitinated protein compared to WT under salt stress. The accumulation of insoluble protein and insoluble ubiquitinated protein was similar under the treatment of ConA in WT and transgenic lines. In summary, our results imply that PagNBR1 is an important selective autophagy receptor in poplar and confers salt tolerance by accelerating antioxidant system activity and autophagy activity. Moreover, the NBR1 gene is an important potential molecular target for improving stress resistance in trees.

Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) process is widely used to produce lightweight composite components owing to its excellent flexibility and efficiency. However, the out-of-plane fiber waviness induced by gaps and overlaps inevitably formed in the AFP process lack experimental studies. Therefore, an experimental research is proposed to study the influence mechanism of out-of-plane fiber waviness. Herein, based on the description of the shape of the fiber waviness, the relationship between the magnitude factor and the axial elastic modulus of laminate with fiber waviness is established. By embedding gaps and overlaps in the layup, a new approach to manufacturing composite laminate with fiber waviness of sine wave and sine-like wave is proposed, and the rationality of the theoretical analysis on the elastic properties of laminate with fiber waviness is verified. Finally, the effect of the magnitude factor on the mechanical properties of composite laminate is obtained by tensile and compression test. Experimental results show that the tensile and compression properties of laminate decrease significantly with the increase of magnitude factor. The effect of sine-like wave on mechanical properties is similar to that of sine wave, and it is feasible to splice sine-like wave into sine wave for mechanical property analysis.

The human immune response to eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) infection is poorly characterized due to the rarity of infection. We examined the humoral and cellular immune response to EEEV acquired from an infected donor via liver transplantation. Both binding and highly neutralizing antibodies to EEEV as well as a robust EEEV-specific IgG memory B cell response were generated. Despite triple-drug immunosuppressive therapy, a virus-specific CD4+ T cell response, predominated by interferon-γ production, was generated. T cell epitopes on the E2 envelope protein were identified by interferon-γ ELISpot. Although these results are from a single person who acquired EEEV by a non-traditional mechanism, to our knowledge this work represents the first analysis of the human cellular immune response to EEEV.

The dense extracellular matrix and high interstitial fluid pressure of tumor tissues prevent the ability of anti-tumor agents to penetrate deep into the tumor parenchyma for treatment effects. C-end rule (CendR) peptides can enhance the permeability of tumor blood vessels and tumor tissues via binding to neuropilin-1 (NRP-1), thus aiding in drug delivery. In this study, we selected one of the CendR peptides (sequence RGERPPR) as the parent l-peptide and substituted d-amino acids for the l-amino acids to synthesize its inverso peptide D(RGERPPR). We investigated the NRP-1 binding activity and tumor-penetrating ability of D(RGERPPR). We found that the binding affinity of D(RGERPPR) with NRP-1 and the cellular uptake was significantly higher than that of RGERPPR. Evans Blue tests revealed that D(RGERPPR) exhibited improved tumor-penetrating ability in C6, U87 and A549 tumor-bearing nude mice. Using nude mice bearing A549 xenograft tumors as a model, we found that the rate of tumor growth in the group co-administered with D(RGERPPR) and gemcitabine (Gem) was significantly lower than the gemcitabine-treated group with a tumor suppression rate (TSR%) of 55.4%. Summary: The major mechanism of antibody-mediated neutralization of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) involves competition with the cellular receptor dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) for binding to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike (S) glycoprotein. Here, we report a unique epitope and unusual neutralizing mechanism of the isolated human antibody MERS-4. Structurally, MERS-4 approached the RBD from the outside of the RBD-DPP4 binding interface. Such binding resulted in the folding of the β5-β6 loop toward a shallow groove on the RBD interface critical for accommodating DPP4. The key residues for binding are identified through site-directed mutagenesis. Structural modeling revealed that MERS-4 binds to RBD only in the “up” position in the S trimer. Furthermore, MERS-4 demonstrated synergy with several reported antibodies. These results indicate that MERS-4 neutralizes MERS-CoV by indirect rather than direct competition with DPP4. This mechanism provides a valuable addition for the combined use of antibodies against MERS-CoV infection. : Zhang et al. report the structural and functional analysis of the potent MERS-CoV neutralizing antibody MERS-4. MERS-4 recognizes a unique epitope and indirectly disrupts interaction between the receptor binding domain and the receptor DPP4. Object detection is one of the key algorithms in automatic driving systems. Aiming at addressing the problem of false detection and the missed detection of both small and occluded objects in automatic driving scenarios, an improved Faster-RCNN object detection algorithm is proposed. First, deformable convolution and a spatial attention mechanism are used to improve the ResNet-50 backbone network to enhance the feature extraction of small objects; then, an improved feature pyramid structure is introduced to reduce the loss of features in the fusion process. Three cascade detectors are introduced to solve the problem of IOU (Intersection-Over-Union) threshold mismatch, and side-aware boundary localization is applied for frame regression. Finally, Soft-NMS (Soft Non-maximum Suppression) is used to remove bounding boxes to obtain the best results. The experimental results show that the improved Faster-RCNN can better detect small objects and occluded objects, and its accuracy is 7.7% and 4.1% respectively higher than that of the baseline in the eight categories selected from the COCO2017 and BDD100k data sets.

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of different trajectory planning methods on the mechanical properties of components. The scope of the research includes finite element simulation calculation and experimental tests of the actual structure. The test shall be carried out in the whole load range until the failure of the structure occurs. Taking the composite conical shell as an example, a variable angle initial path generation method of the conical shell surface is proposed, and the parallel offset algorithms based on partition and the circumferential averaging are proposed to fill the surface. Then, finite element analysis is carried out for the paths that satisfy the manufacturability requirements, the analysis results show that the maximum deformation and maximum transverse as well as longitudinal stress of fiber of circumferential averaging variable angle path conical shell are reduced by 16.3%, 5.85%, and 19.76%, respectively, of that of the partition variable angle path. Finally, the strength analysis of conical shells manufactured by different trajectory design schemes is carried out through finite element analysis and actual failure tests. The finite element analysis results are in good agreement with the experimental results of the actual structure. The results show that the circumferential uniform variable angle has good quality, and it is proved that the path planning algorithm that coordinates path planning and defect suppression plays an important role in optimizing placement trajectory and improving mechanical properties of parts.

The stringer-stiffened structure is widely used due to its excellent mechanical properties. Improving the manufacturing quality of stringer-stiffened structure which have complex geometry is important to ensure the bearing capacity of aviation components. Herein, composite hat-stiffened composite structures were manufactured by different filling forms and bladders with various properties, the deformation of silicone rubber bladder in co-curing process was studied by using the finite element method. The thickness measurement at different positions of the hat-stiffened structure was performed to determine the best filling form and bladder property. Moreover, in view of the detection difficulties in R-zone of stringer, numerical simulation was performed to get the sound pressure and impulse response of at the R-zone of stringer by Rayleigh integration method, and an effective equipment which could stably detect the manufacturing quality of R-zone was designed to verify the correctness of sound field simulation and realize the detection of stringer. With the optimum filling form and bladder properties, hat-stiffened composites can be manufactured integrally with improved surface quality and geometric accuracy, based on co-curing process.

The cellular immune responses elicited by an investigational vaccine against an emergent variant of influenza (H3N2v) are not fully understood. Twenty-five subjects, enrolled in an investigational influenza A/H3N2v vaccine study, who received two doses of vaccine 21 days apart, were included in a sub-study of cellular immune responses. H3N2v-specific plasmablasts were determined by ELISpot 8 days after each vaccine dose and H3N2v specific CD4+ T cells were quantified by intracellular cytokine and CD154 (CD40 ligand) staining before vaccination, 8 and 21 days after each vaccine dose. Results: 95% (19/20) and 96% (24/25) subjects had pre-existing H3N2v specific memory B, and T cell responses, respectively. Plasmablast responses at Day 8 after the first vaccine administration were detected against contemporary H3N2 strains and correlated with hemagglutination inhibition HAI (IgG: p = 0.018; IgA: p < 0.001) and Neut (IgG: p = 0.038; IgA: p = 0.021) titers and with memory B cell frequency at baseline (IgA: r = 0.76, p < 0.001; IgG: r = 0.74, p = 0.0001). The CD4+ T cells at Days 8 and 21 expanded after prime vaccination and this expansion correlated strongly with early post-vaccination HAI and Neut titers (p ≤ 0.002). In an adult population, the rapid serological response observed after initial H3N2v vaccination correlates with post-vaccination plasmablasts and CD4+ T cell responses.

High concentrations of Na+ in saline soil impair plant growth and agricultural production. Protein tyrosine phosphorylation is crucial in many cellular regulatory mechanisms. However, regulatory mechanisms of plant protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) in controlling responses to abiotic stress remain limited. We report here the identification of a Tyrosine (Tyr)-specific phosphatase, PdPTP1, from NE19 (Populus nigra × (P. deltoides × P. nigra). Transcript levels of PdPTP1 were upregulated significantly by NaCl treatment and oxidative stress. PdPTP1 was found both in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Under NaCl treatment, transgenic plants overexpressing PdPTP1 (OxPdPTP1) accumulated more Na+ and less K+. In addition, OxPdPTP1 poplars accumulated more H2O2 and O2·−, which is consistent with the downregulation of enzymatic ROS-scavengers activity. Furthermore, PdPTP1 interacted with PdMAPK3/6 in vivo and in vitro. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that PdPTP1 functions as a negative regulator of salt tolerance via a mechanism of affecting Na+/K+ and ROS homeostasis.

Poplar (Populus) is one of the most important woody plants worldwide. Drought, a primary abiotic stress, seriously affects poplar growth and development. Multiple organellar RNA editing factor (MORF) genes—pivotal factors in the RNA editosome in Arabidopsis thaliana—are indispensable for the regulation of various physiological processes, including organelle C-to-U RNA editing and plasmid development, as well as in the response to stresses. Although the poplar genome sequence has been released, little is known about MORF genes in poplar, especially those involved in the response to drought stress at the genome-wide level. In this study, we identified nine MORF genes in the Populus genome. Based on the structural features of MORF proteins and the topology of the phylogenetic tree, the P. trichocarpa (Ptr) MORF family members were classified into six groups (Groups I–VI). A microsynteny analysis indicated that two (22.2%) PtrMORF genes were tandemly duplicated and seven genes (77.8%) were segmentally duplicated. Based on the dN/dS ratios, purifying selection likely played a major role in the evolution of this family and contributed to functional divergence among PtrMORF genes. Moreover, analysis of qRT-PCR data revealed that PtrMORFs exhibited tissue- and treatment-specific expression patterns. PtrMORF genes in all group were involved in the stress response. These results provide a solid foundation for further analyses of the functions and molecular evolution of MORF genes in poplar, and, in particular, for improving the drought resistance of poplar by genetics manipulation.

Poplars have evolved various strategies to optimize acclimation responses to environmental conditions. However, how poplars balance growth and nitrogen deficiency remains to be elucidated. In the present study, changes in root development, carbon and nitrogen physiology, and the transcript abundance of associated genes were investigated in slow-growing Populus simonii (Ps) and fast-growing Populus euramericana (Pe) saplings treated with low, medium, and high nitrogen supply. The slow-growing Ps showed a flourishing system, higher δ15N, accelerated C export, lower N uptake and assimilation, and less sensitive transcriptional regulation in response to low N supply. The slow-growing Ps also had greater resistance to N deficiency due to the transport of photosynthate to the roots and the stimulation of root development, which allows survival. To support its rapid metabolism and growth, compared with the slow-growing Ps, the fast-growing Pe showed greater root development, C/N uptake and assimilation capacity, and more responsive transcriptional regulation with greater N supply. These data suggest that poplars can differentially manage C/N metabolism and photosynthate allocation under different N supply conditions.

The problem of consensus-based distributed tracking in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with switching network topologies and outlier-corrupted sensor observations is considered. First, to attack the outlier-corrupted measurements, a robust Kalman filtering (RKF) scheme with weighted matrices on innovation sequences is introduced. The proposed RKF possesses high robustness against outliers while having similar computational burden as traditional Kalman filter. Then, each node estimates the network-wide agreement on target state using only communications between one-hop neighbors. In order to improve the convergent speed of the consensus filter in case of switching topologies, an adaptive weight update strategy is proposed. Note that the proposed algorithm relaxes the requirement of Gaussian noise statistics in contrast to the decentralized/distributed Kalman filters. Besides, unlike the existing consensus-based filters, we do not need to perform consensus filtering on the covariance matrices, which will reduce the computational and communicational burden abundantly. Finally, simulation examples are included to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed RKF and effectiveness of adaptive consensus approach.

This paper addresses the problem of estimation fusion in a distributed wireless sensor network (WSN) under the following conditions: (i) sensor noises are contaminated by outliers or gross errors; (ii) process noise and sensor noises are correlated; (iii) cross-correlation among local estimates is unknown. First, to attack the correlation and outliers, a correlated robust Kalman filtering (coR 2 KF) scheme with weighted matrices on innovation sequences is introduced as local estimator. It is shown that the proposed coR 2 KF takes both conventional Kalman filter and robust Kalman filter as a special case. Then, a novel version of our internal ellipsoid approximation fusion (IEAF) is used in the fusion center to handle the unknown cross-correlation of local estimates. The explicit solution to both fusion estimate and corresponding covariance is given. Finally, to demonstrate robustness of the proposed coR 2 KF and the effectiveness of IEAF strategy, a simulation example of tracking a target moving on noisy circular trajectories is included.

Optimizing the design of tracking system under energy and bandwidth constraints in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is of paramount importance. In this paper, the problem of collaborative target tracking in WSNs is considered in a framework of quantized measurement fusion. First, the measurement in each local sensor is quantized by probabilistic quantization scheme and transmitted to a fusion center (FC). Then, the quantized messages are fused and sequential importance resampling (SIR) particle filtering is employed to estimate the target state. In the FC, quantized measurement fusion via both augmented approach and weighted approach is investigated. For both approaches, the closed-form solution to the optimization problem of bandwidth scheduling is given, where the total energy consumption is minimized subject to a constraint on the fusion performance. Finally, posterior Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) on the tracking accuracy using quantized measurement fusion are derived. Simulation results reveal that both approaches perform very closely to the posterior CRLB while obtaining average communication energy saving up to 72.8% and 45.1%, respectively.
