Attributed to its excellent physicochemical properties, graphene (GR) has very active applications in the fields of catalysis, optoelectronic devices, and battery electrode materials. However, until now, regulating the type and density of carriers in GR is still crucial for its practical applications. Here, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-Bi2Te3 heterojunctions doped with different contents were prepared by a simple one-step method. The Bi2Te3 materials containing different RGO were made into broadband (365–850 ​nm) photoelectrochemical-type detectors, and the effects of the doping amount of RGO on the optoelectronic behavior of the devices and the intrinsic operation mechanism of the devices were investigated in detail. The results show that the values of Iph/Idark, Ri, and D∗ of Bi2Te3/RGO heterojunction devices obtained with 1 ​mg of RGO doping are 412, 6.072 ​mA/W, and 2.406 ​× ​1010 Jones, respectively. It is anticipated that this work will provide a research basis for future quantitative tuning of the performance of micro-nano devices by GR.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major global health concern with increasing incident cases and deaths. Homocysteine (Hcy) has been investigated for its potential association with CVD, researchers have debated the extent to which Hcy should be considered a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, as only 50% of CVD can be explained by classical risk factors. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study using NHANES 1999–2006 data, analyzing 1,739 US patients aged at least 30 with CVD. Cox proportional hazards regression and restricted cubic splines were used to examine the relationship between Hcy levels and mortality, adjusting for covariates. Result A total of 1,739 participants with cardiovascular disease (CVD) were enrolled, with a median follow-up period of 126 months. Among them, 1,194 participants died, including 501 deaths due to cardiovascular causes. After adjusting for covariates, the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for CVD mortality at different levels of homocysteine (Hcy) (T1 ( 12.5)) were 1.26 (0.92, 1.73) (T2), and 1.69 (1.14, 2.51) (T3) (P for trend = 0.0086). Abstract Background The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index, a tool for assessing insulin resistance, is increasingly recognized for its ability to predict cardiovascular and metabolic risks. However, its relationship with trauma and surgical patient prognosis is understudied. This study investigated the correlation between the TyG index and mortality risk in surgical/trauma ICU patients to identify high-risk individuals and improve prognostic strategies. Methods This study identified patients requiring trauma/surgical ICU admission from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database, and divided them into tertiles based on the TyG index. The outcomes included 28-day mortality and 180-day mortality for short-term and long-term prognosis. The associations between the TyG index and clinical outcomes in patients were elucidated using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and RCS models. Results A total of 2103 patients were enrolled. The 28-day mortality and 180-day mortality rates reached 18% and 24%, respectively. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that an elevated TyG index was significantly related to 28-day and 180-day mortality after covariates adjusting. An elevated TyG index was significantly associated with 28-day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% confidence interval 1.04–1.37) and 180-day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.24; 95% confidence interval 1.11–1.39). RCS models revealed that a progressively increasing risk of mortality was related to an elevated TyG index. According to our subgroup analysis, an elevated TyG index is associated with increased risk of 28-day and 180-day mortality in critically ill patients younger than 60 years old, as well as those with concomitant stroke or cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, in nondiabetic patients, an elevated TyG index is associated with 180-day mortality. Conclusion An increasing risk of mortality was related to an elevated TyG index. In critically ill patients younger than 60 years old, as well as those with concomitant stroke or cardiovascular diseases, an elevated TyG index is associated with adverse short-term and long-term outcomes. Furthermore, in non-diabetic patients, an elevated TyG index is associated with adverse long-term prognosis.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization (WHO) has established recommended daily intakes for sodium and potassium. However, there is currently some controversy regarding the association between sodium intake, potassium intake, the sodium-to-potassium ratio, and overall mortality. To assess the correlations between sodium intake, potassium intake, the sodium-to-potassium ratio, and overall mortality, as well as the potential differences in sodium and potassium intake thresholds among different population groups, we analyzed data from NHANES 2003–2018. Methods NHANES is an observational cohort study that estimates sodium and potassium intake through one or two 24-h dietary recalls. Hazard ratios (HR) for overall mortality were calculated using multivariable adjusted Cox models accounting for sampling design. A total of 13855 out of 26288 participants were included in the final analysis. Restricted cubic spline analyses were used to examine the relationship between sodium intake, potassium intake, and overall mortality. If non-linearity was detected, we employed a recursive algorithm to calculate inflection points. Results Based on one or two 24-h dietary recalls, the sample consisted of 13,855 participants, representing a non-institutionalized population aged 40–80 years, totaling 11,348,771 person-months of mean follow-up 99.395 months. Daily sodium intake and daily potassium intake were inversely associated with all-cause mortality. Restrictive cubic spline analysis showed non-linear relationships between daily sodium intake, potassium intake, sodium–potassium ratio, and total mortality. The inflection point for daily sodium intake was 3133 mg/d, and the inflection point for daily potassium intake was 3501 mg/d, and the inflection point for daily sodium–potassium ratio intake was 1.203 mg/mg/d. In subgroup analyses, a significant interaction was found between age and high sodium intake, which was further confirmed by the smooth curves that showed a U-shaped relationship between sodium intake and all-cause mortality in the elderly population, with a inflection point of 3634 mg/d. Conclusion Nonlinear associations of daily sodium intake, daily potassium intake and daily sodium–potassium ratio intake with all-cause mortality were observed in American individuals. The inflection point for daily sodium intake was 3133 mg/d. And the inflection point for daily sodium intake was 3634 mg/d in elderly population. The inflection point for daily potassium intake was 3501 mg/d. The inflection point for daily sodium–potassium ratio intake was 1.203 mg/mg/d, respectively, A healthy diet should be based on reasonable sodium intake and include an appropriate sodium-to-potassium ratio.

Abstract The efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is currently limited by poor light adsorption, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, and ineffective surface reaction rate. Although heterojunctions with innovative morphologies and structures can strengthen built‐in electric fields and maximize the separation of photogenerated charges. However, how to rational design of novel multidimensional structures to simultaneously improve the above three bottleneck problems is still a research imperative. Herein, a unique Cu2O─S@graphene oxide (GO)@Zn0.67Cd0.33S Three dimensional (3D) hollow heterostructure is designed and synthesized, which greatly extends the carrier lifetime and effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated charges. The H2 production rate reached 48.5 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light after loading Ni2+ on the heterojunction surface, which is 97 times higher than that of pure Zn0.67Cd0.33S nanospheres. Furthermore, the H2 production rate can reach 77.3 mmol g−1 h−1 without cooling, verifying the effectiveness of the photothermal effect. Meanwhile, in situ characterization and density flooding theory calculations reveal the efficient charge transfer at the p‐n 3D hollow heterojunction interface. This study not only reveals the detailed mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in depth but also rationalizes the construction of superior 3D hollow heterojunctions, thus providing a universal strategy for the materials‐by‐design of high‐performance heterojunctions.

Objectives: Evidence on cardiovascular-related and all-cause mortality risks in a wide range of cancer survivors is scarce but needed to inform prevention and management.Methods: We performed a nationwide prospective cohort study using information from the Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States and the linked mortality follow-up files, available for public access. A propensity score-matched analysis with a 1:1 ratio was conducted to reduce the baseline differences between participants with and without cancer. The relationship between cancer status and the cardiovascular-related and all-cause mortality risk was examined using weighted Cox proportional hazards regression. Independent stratification analysis and cancer-specific analyses were also performed.Results: The study sample included 44,342 participants, aged 20–85, interviewed between 1999 and 2018. Of these, 4,149 participants had cancer. All-cause death occurred in 6,655 participants, of whom 2,053 died from cardiovascular causes. Propensity-score matching identified 4,149 matched pairs of patients. A fully adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression showed that cancer was linked to an elevated risk of cardiovascular-related and all-cause mortality both before and after propensity score matching. Stratification analysis and cancer-specific analyses confirmed robustness of results.Conclusion: Our study confirmed that cancer was strongly linked to cardiovascular-related and all-cause mortality, even after adjusting for other factors that could impact a risk, including the American Heart Association (AHA)’s Life’s Simple 7 cardiovascular health score, age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, income, and education level.

Over-consumption of limited fossil fuels has caused serious environmental pollution and a global energy crisis, threatening human life and biodiversity. As an ideal, environmentally friendly renewable energy, hydrogen can satisfy human clean energy requirements. Therefore, whether hydrogen can be catalytically generated in the wastewater treatment process is a highly meaningful investigation. Herein, Bi2Te3/Te/C heterojunction nanowires with high specific surface area and rich pore structure were successfully synthesized. The efficient catalytic degradation process is accompanied by the generation of hydrogen. The catalytic degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange was achieved in less than 20 s and 150 s, respectively. Meanwhile, in scaled-up degradation/hydrogen production experiments, fast and efficient H2 production from NaBH4 can be realized in the presence of Bi2Te3/Te/C nanowires. The mechanism of efficient synergistic organic dye degradation and hydrogen production is due to the efficient carrier transfers and accumulation at the hetero-interface. In contrast to previous work, rapid degradation of organic dyes and hydrogen production by decomposition of NaBH4 were achieved without the help of high-cost catalysts such as precious metals. This work could provide an alternative pathway for the future degradation of organic matter in synergistic heterogeneous catalytic wastewater and recovery of by-products including hydrogen.

This paper reports the preparation of margarine fat using Lipozyme TL IM as a catalyst and peony seed oil (PSO), palm stearin (PS) and coconut oil (CO) as raw materials. The results indicate that there were no significant changes in fatty acid composition before or after interesterification of the oil samples. However, the total amount of medium- and long-chain triglycerides (MLCTs) increased from 2.92% to 11.38% in sample E1 after interesterification, mainly including LaLaO, LaMO, LaPM, LaOO, LaPO and LaPP. Moreover, the slip melting point (SMP) of sample E1 decreased from 45.9 °C (B1) to 33.5 °C. The solid fat content (SFC) of all the samples at 20 °C was greater than 10%, indicating that they could effectively prevent oil exudation. After interesterification, the samples exhibited a β′ crystal form and could be used to prepare functional margarine.

Abstract Missense mutation C694R in the RING domain of the LRSAM1 gene results in a dominantly inherited polyneuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2P (CMT2P). We have generated and characterized a Lrsam1 C698R knock-in mouse model produced through CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Both heterozygous (Lrsam1 +/C698R) and homozygous (Lrsam1 C698/C698R) knock-in mice exhibited normal motor functions on behavioral tests as well as normal on nerve conduction studies. Axonal density and myelin thickness were not significantly different between mutants and wild-type mice by sciatic nerve morphometric analysis up to 17 months of age. In line with these normal findings, protein–protein interactions between mutant LRSAM1 and RNA-binding proteins (such as FUS and G3BP1) were still present in mouse cells, which differs from the disrupted interactions between these proteins in human CMT2P cells. However, after crush nerve injury, Lrsam1 +/C698R mice had a mild, but statistically significant, reduced compound nerve action potential and conduction velocity during recovery. Therefore, C698R mutation results in a mild impaired nerve regeneration in mice. We speculate that repetitive nerve injuries may, at least partially, contribute to the slowly progressive axonal loss in CMT2P.

BackgroundPrior research on women who had hysterectomies has shown mixed results on whether or not hysterectomies increased the incidence of stroke and cause-specific or all-cause mortality.MethodsUsing information from the Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States, including linked mortality follow-up files available for public access, a multicycle cross-sectional design mortality linkage study was performed.ResultsConducted during the years 2005–2018, the study sample included 14,214 female participants ranging in age from 20 to 85 years. The relationship between the hysterectomy status and the risk of stroke and cause-specific and all-cause mortality was examined using a series of weighted logistic regressions and Cox proportional hazards regressions, respectively. The presence of a hysterectomy was consistently linked to an elevated risk of stroke using weighted logistic regression models. The hysterectomy status, however, consistently showed no effect on survival by adjusted weighted Cox regression analysis.ConclusionOur study found a significant association between hysterectomy and stroke, even after adjusting for other factors that could impact risk, such as the American Heart Association (AHA)'s Life's Simple 7 cardiovascular health score and variables of age, ethnicity, marital status, income, education, and depression severity.

Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) is the lysine methyltransferase of polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) that catalyzes H3K27 tri-methylation. Aberrant expression and loss-of-function mutations of EZH2 have been demonstrated to be tightly associated with the pathogenesis of various myeloid malignancies characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis, such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). However, the function and mechanism of EZH2 in human erythropoiesis still remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that EZH2 regulates human erythropoiesis in a stage-specific, dual-function manner by catalyzing histone and non-histone methylation. During the early erythropoiesis, EZH2 deficiency caused cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase, which impaired cell growth and differentiation. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing and RNA sequencing discovered that EZH2 knockdown caused a reduction of H3K27me3 and upregulation of cell cycle proteindependent kinase inhibitors. In contrast, EZH2 deficiency led to the generation of abnormal nuclear cells and impaired enucleation during the terminal erythropoiesis. Interestingly, EZH2 deficiency downregulated the methylation of HSP70 by directly interacting with HSP70. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that the expression of AURKB was significantly downregulated in response to EZH2 deficiency. Furthermore, treatment with an AURKB inhibitor and small hairpin RNAmediated AURKB knockdown also led to nuclear malformation and decreased enucleation efficiency. These findings strongly suggest that EZH2 regulates terminal erythropoiesis through a HSP70 methylation-AURKB axis. Our findings have implications for improved understanding of ineffective erythropoiesis with EZH2 dysfunction.

BackgroundMorbidity and mortality of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) varied according to socioeconomic status (SES), and evidence on the association between SES and ASCVD risk, and cause-specific and all-cause mortality was nevertheless lacking in large-scale or population-based studies.MethodsA multicycle cross-sectional design and mortality linkage study was conducted using data from Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States, including public use linked mortality follow-up files through December 31, 2019. Poverty income ratio (PIR) served as a SES index. A series of weighted Logistic regressions and Cox proportional hazards regressions were used to investigate the association between the SES and the risk of ASCVD and mortality, respectively.ResultsThe study sample was comprised of 30,040 participants aged 20–85 years old during the 2005–2018 period. Weighted Logistic regression models consistently indicated significant relationship between people experiencing poverty and increased risk of ASCVD, and linear trend tests were all statistically significant (all P for trend < 0.001). Additionally, weighted Cox regression analysis consistently demonstrated that the hazards of cause-specific and all-cause mortality increased, with the decrease of each additional income level, and trend analyses indicated similar results (all P for trend < 0.001).ConclusionsOur study confirmed that the SES was strongly linked to living with ASCVD, and cause-specific and all-cause mortality, even after adjusting for other factors that could impact risk, such as the American Heart Association (AHA)'s Life's Simple 7 cardiovascular health score and variables of age, sex, marital status, education, and depression severity.

Research on the association between level of depression and coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke risk, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality is lacking in large-scale or population-based studies incorporating cardiovascular disease (CVD) endpoints. We aim to assess the relationship between the level of a person's depression and their risk of CHD, stroke, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Utilizing data from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), multicycle cross-sectional design and mortality linkage studies were conducted. The study sample included 30918 participants aged 20–85 years old during the 2005–2018 period. Depression was assessed using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), with scores of 5, 10, 15, and 20 being the cut-off points for mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe depression, respectively. A series of weighted logistic regression analyses and Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to examine the relationship between the level of depression with the risk of CHD, stroke, all-cause, and cardiovascular mortality. Trend analyses were conducted by entering the level of depression as a continuous variable and rerunning the corresponding regression models. Weighted logistic regression models consistently indicated a statistically significant association between the level of depression and increased risk of CHD and stroke, and those linear trend tests were statistically significant (P for trend < 0.001). Furthermore, weighted Cox regression analyses consistently indicated that participants who had a more severe degree of depression were at a higher risk of all-cause death, and trend analyses suggested similar results (P for trend < 0.001). Another weighted Cox regression analysis also consistently indicated that except for severe depression, the hazard of cardiovascular death was increased with each additional level increase of depression. Our study confirmed that the level of depression was strongly associated with CHD, stroke, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, even after accounting for other factors that could impact risk, including variables of age, gender, ethnicity, income, education, body mass index (BMI), marital, and smoking status.

Reconstruction surgery for acute proximal anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears remains controversial. Recently, ACL primary repair has received increasing attention in ACL treatment. This study aimed to explore the histological characteristics of ACL healing in primary repair and compare its therapeutic and prognostic results with the reconstruction of acute proximal ACL tears. Histological experiments using rabbits and a prospective clinical trial were conducted. We established a rabbit model of ACL primary repair, and histological changes were observed using haematoxylin and eosin (HE) and toluidine blue staining. We performed immunohistochemical analysis of CD34 and S-100 and measured the expression of collagen I and II using qRT-PCR, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. The prospective clinical trial involved performing ACL primary repair and reconstruction in patients with acute proximal ACL tears to detect proprioception and evaluate the function of joints. We discovered that primary repair promoted cell proliferation in the tendon-bone transition and ligament portions, reduced osteoarthritis-like pathological changes, and maintained blood vessels and proprioceptors within the ACL. In the clinical trial, primary repair achieved similar therapeutic outcomes, including recovery of knee function and proprioception, in the follow-up period as ACL reconstruction. However, the primary repair had a significantly shorter operative time and lower cost than reconstruction. Therefore, doctors should consider the benefit of primary repair in treating acute proximal ACL tears.

The influence of the O2 flow rate on the properties of gallium oxide (Ga2O3) by RF magnetron sputtering was studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmittance spectra, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra have been employed to study the Ga2O3 thin films. With the increase in oxygen flow rate, both the crystal quality and luminescence intensity of the Ga2O3 samples first decrease and then enhance. All these observations suggested that the reduction in the oxygen defect density is responsible for the improvement in the crystal quality and emission intensity of the material. Our results demonstrated that high-quality Ga2O3 materials could be obtained by adjusting the oxygen flow rate.

In this study, the event-triggered decentralized fault tolerant control (FTC) problem is investigated for a class of interconnected nonlinear time delay systems in strict feedback form with input quantization and actuator faults. The model of interconnected nonlinear time delay systems includes unstructured uncertainties and unmeasurable states. Firstly, the radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) are introduced to identify the unstructured uncertainties and time delay functions. An adaptive RBFNNs state observer is constructed to identify the unmeasurable states, which will be used to the design of decentralized fault tolerant controller. By utilizing the adaptive backstepping technique with low pass filter, an event-based decentralized FTC strategy is developed for the considered interconnected nonlinear systems, such that the output signals could track the reference signals, and the stability of the closed loop systems is guaranteed. Finally, the effectiveness of the designed control strategy is illustrated by a practical simulation example.

We report electron transport studies of a thin InAs-Al hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowire device using a four-terminal design. Compared to previous studies, thinner InAs nanowire (diameter less than 40 nm) is expected to reach fewer subband regime. The four-terminal device design excludes electrode contact resistance, an unknown value, which has inevitably affected previously reported device conductance. Using tunneling spectroscopy, we find large zero bias peaks (ZBPs) in differential conductance on the order of 2e^{2}/h. At specific gate voltage settings, we find a magnetic-field-driven transition between a zero bias peak and a zero bias dip while the zero-bias conductance sticks close to 2e^{2}/h. We discuss a topologically trivial interpretation involving disorder, smooth potential variation and quasi-Majorana zero modes.

The photocatalysis technique has been proven to be a promising method to solve environmental pollution in situations of energy shortage, and has been intensively investigated in the field of pollutant degradation. In this work, a band structure-controlled solid solution of BiOBrXI1−X (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 1.00) with highly efficient light-driven photocatalytic activities was successfully synthesized via simple solvothermal methods. The phase composition, crystal structure, morphology, internal molecular vibration, optical properties, and energy band structure were characterized and analyzed by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS, Raman, and UV Vis DRS. To evaluate the photocatalytic activity of BiOBrXI1−X, rhodamine B was selected as an organic pollutant. In particular, BiOBr0.15I0.85 displayed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity by virtue of modulating the energy band position, optimizing redox potentials, and accelerating carrier separation. Moreover, the enhancement mechanism was elucidated on the basis of band structure engineering, which provides ideas for the design of highly active photocatalysts for practical application in the fields of environmental issues and energy conservation.

The investigation of photodetectors with broadband response and high responsivity is essential. Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanowire has the potential of application in photodetectors, owing to the great optoelectrical property and good stability in the atmosphere. However, due to a large number of nonradiative centers at interface and the capture of surface state electrons, the photocurrent of ZnO based photodetectors is still low. In this work, 2D Bi2Se3/ZnO NWAs heterojunction with type-I band alignment is established. This heterojunction device shows not only an enhanced photoresponsivity of 0.15 A/W at 377 nm three times of the bare ZnO nanowire (0.046 A/W), but also a broadband photoresponse from UV to near infrared region has been achieved. These results indicate that the Bi2Se3/ZnO NWAs type-I heterojunction is an ideal photodetector in broadband detection.

Photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen is regarded as one of the key solutions to the deterioration of the global environment and energy. Due to the significantly reduced grain boundaries, ZnO nanorods facilitate a fast electron transfer through their smooth tunnels and are well suited as a photocatalyst. However, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of pristine ZnO nanorods is still low due to the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the less light absorption. Here, a novel structure about black ZnO nanorods (NRs)/TiO2-X mesoporous spheres (MSs) heterojunction has been prepared and the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance has been explored. The photocatalytic activity test results showed that ZnO NRs/TiO2-X MSs exhibited higher catalytic activity than ZnO NRs for hydrogen production. Compared to the pure ZnO NRs photoanode, the photocurrent of ZnO NRs/TiO2-X MSs heterojunction photoanode could reach 0.41 mA/cm2 in view of the expanding spectral response region and effective inhibition of e−/h+ recombination at the same condition. Using a relatively integrated experimental investigation and mechanism analysis, we scrutinized that after being treated with NaBH4, TiO2 MSs introduce oxygen vacancies expanding the photocatalytic activity of pure TiO2, and improving conductivity and charge transport capabilities through coating on ZnO NRs. More importantly, the results provide a promising approach in the NRs/MSs composite structure serving as photoanodes for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

We develop a nonperturbative approach for calculating the superconducting transition temperatures (T_{c}'s) of liquids. The electron-electron scattering amplitude induced by electron-phonon coupling (EPC), from which an effective pairing interaction can be inferred, is related to the fluctuation of the T matrix of electron scattering induced by ions. By applying the relation, EPC parameters can be extracted from a path-integral molecular dynamics simulation. For determining T_{c}, the linearized Eliashberg equations are reestablished nonperturbatively. We apply the approach to estimate T_{c}'s of metallic hydrogen liquids. It indicates that metallic hydrogen liquids in the pressure regime from 0.5 to 1.5TPa have T_{c}'s well above their melting temperatures and therefore are superconducting liquids.
