The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between teachers' reports of classroom adversity, a measure of classroom hardship, and student problem behavior in a sample of students with or at risk of emotional/behavioral disorders. We also examined the extent to which this relation varied as a function of multiple domains of classroom quality. A series of multiple regression models, adjusting for the nesting of students within classrooms, were conducted. Models revealed a significant effect of the interaction between classroom adversity and classroom emotional support on teachers' reports of student problem behaviors. This effect indicated that in low-adversity classrooms, teachers differed in their reports of students' problem behaviors depending on their level of emotional support. In high-adversity classrooms, however, teachers' reports of students' problem behaviors were relatively similar regardless of their level of emotional support. Findings suggest classroom adversity is likely an important contextual factor to consider when examining student outcomes and that teacher emotional support may mitigate the influence of classroom adversity. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of this work for research and practice.

Bacterial pneumonia can present in both dogs and cats as either acute or chronic disease, and clinical signs may suggest respiratory or systemic impairment. Aspiration pneumonia, a common form of disease, can be caused by esophageal or laryngeal disease, vomiting, or altered mentation, such as with CNS disease or general anesthesia. Bacterial pneumonia can also develop due to inhaled airway foreign bodies, reduced local immune function, or impaired clearance of respiratory secretions. Rapid identification of the etiology and associated risk factors for pneumonia can help veterinarians develop a targeted therapeutic plan and prevent recurrence of disease.

This article explores the experiences of project directors at two-year Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions in the Midwest. Specifically, we examined how project directors faced racialized campus environments, navigated support structures (or the lack thereof), and continually combatted misperceptions about the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AA/PI) communities and the Midwest. We discussed the isolation, myths, lack of institutional support, and campus climate for project directors and AA/PI communities. We end with recommendations.

Introduction: Due to usability, feasibility, and acceptability concerns, observational treatment fidelity measures are often challenging to deploy in schools. Teacher self-report fidelity measures with specific design features might address some of these barriers. This case study outlines a community-engaged, iterative process to adapt the observational Treatment Integrity for Elementary Settings (TIES-O) to a teacher self-report version designed to assess the use of practices to support children's social-emotional competencies in elementary classrooms. Method: Cognitive walkthrough interviews were conducted with teachers to improve the usability of the teacher self-report measure, called the Treatment Integrity for Elementary Schools-Teacher Report (TIES-T). Qualitative content analysis was used to extract themes from the interviews and inform changes to the measure. Results: Increasing clarity and interactive elements in the measure training were the dominant themes, but suggestions for the measure format and jargon were also suggested. Conclusion: The suggested changes resulted in a brief measure, training, and feedback system designed to support the teacher's use of practices to support children's social-emotional competencies in elementary classrooms. Future research with the TIES-T will examine the score reliability and validity of the measure.

Babesia species infect a very wide range of mammal hosts across the globe, and zoonotic infections are of growing concern. Several species of the Babesia genus infect dogs, and some of these cause significant morbidity and mortality. The Apicomplexan parasite resides within the red cell and infections result in direct damage to the host through intra- and extravascular hemolysis. An exuberant inflammatory response by the host to some species of Babesia parasites also results in significant collateral damage to the host. Canine infections have been the subject of many studies as the well-being of these companion animals is increasingly threatened by the spread of tick vectors and an increasingly mobile dog population. There are currently no widely available and effective vaccines, and effective treatment can be challenging. Understanding disease pathogenesis underlies the development of new treatments. The varying pathogenicity of the various Babesia parasite species that infect dogs offers an opportunity to explore the molecular basis for the wide range of diseases caused by infection with this parasite genus. In this review, we focus on what has been reported about the clinical presentation of Babesia-infected dogs in an attempt to compare the severity of disease caused by different Babesia species.

BACKGROUND: Polyautoimmunity is the expression of more than one autoimmune disease in a single patient. This report documents polyautoimmunity in a mixed breed dog with concurrent uveitis, cutaneous depigmentation, and inflammatory myopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 1-year-old male neutered mixed breed dog was presented for progressive generalized leukotrichia and leukoderma, bilateral panuveitis, and masticatory muscle atrophy. The latter progressed to myositis of lingual, pharyngeal, and masticatory muscles confirmed by biopsy. Temporalis muscle was completely replaced by adipose and fibrous tissue, and necrotic myofibers with extensive infiltration of mononuclear cells indicated active myositis of lingual muscle. Skin biopsies showed severe melanin clumping in epidermis, hair follicles, and hair shafts, and perifollicular pigmentary incontinence. Uveitis, depigmentation, and myositis affecting the masticatory, pharyngeal, and tongue muscles were diagnosed based on clinical, histological, and laboratory findings. CONCLUSIONS: To the authors knowledge, this is the first report of concurrent uveitis, progressive cutaneous depigmentation, and inflammatory myopathy in a dog.

Abstract Oligomeric species arising during the aggregation of α-synuclein are implicated as a major source of toxicity in Parkinson’s disease, and thus a major potential drug target. However, both their mechanism of formation and role in aggregation are largely unresolved. Here we show that, at physiological pH and in the absence of lipid membranes, α-synuclein aggregates form by secondary nucleation, rather than simple primary nucleation, and that this process is enhanced by agitation. Moreover, using a combination of single molecule and bulk level techniques, we identify secondary nucleation on the surfaces of existing fibrils, rather than formation directly from monomers, as the dominant source of oligomers. Our results highlight secondary nucleation as not only the key source of oligomers, but also the main mechanism of aggregate formation, and show that these processes take place under conditions which recapitulate the neutral pH and ionic strength of the cytosol.

Heating and cooling in buildings accounts for over 20% of total energy consumption in China. Therefore, it is essential to understand the thermal requirements of building occupants when establishing building energy codes that would save energy while maintaining occupants thermal comfort. This paper introduces the Chinese thermal comfort dataset, established by seven participating institutions under the leadership of Xian University of Architecture and Technology. The dataset comprises 41,977 sets of data collected from 49 cities across five climate zones in China over the past two decades. The raw data underwent careful quality control procedure, including systematic organization, to ensure its reliability. Each dataset contains environmental parameters, occupants subjective responses, building information, and personal information. The dataset has been instrumental in the development of indoor thermal environment evaluation standards and energy codes in China. It can also have broader applications, such as contributing to the international thermal comfort dataset, modeling thermal comfort and adaptive behaviors, investigating regional differences in indoor thermal conditions, and examining occupants thermal comfort responses.

A 10-year-old, female spayed Labrador Retriever was referred for acute hepatopathy and urinary retention. Blood work from the initial presentation (day 0) revealed a severe, mixed hepatopathy. Over the course of the patient’s hospitalization, the patient developed liver insufficiency. Urine was submitted for toxicological screening and revealed detection of a trace concentration of alpha-amanitin. The patient was treated supportively for alpha-amanitin intoxication and was discharged from the hospital on day 8, with most biochemical parameters being markedly improved. The patient was persistently hyporexic at the time of discharge. On day 15, at a recheck appointment, the patient had lost 2.4 kg and liver enzymology revealed improved values. On day 24, the patient was presented for anorexia and vomiting and had lost another 2.3 kg. Blood work and endocrinological testing at that time were consistent with hypoadrenocorticism. The patient was started on glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. At day 106, the patient was doing well clinically while receiving monthly mineralocorticoids and daily glucocorticoids. This case report is the first to describe the chronological association between alpha-amanitin-induced liver dysfunction and the subsequent development of adrenal insufficiency in a dog.

BackgroundAwareness of prescribing practices helps identify opportunities to improve antibiotic use (AU).ObjectivesTo estimate AU prevalence in dogs and cats in U.S. veterinary teaching hospitals (VTHs) and identify antibiotic drugs commonly prescribed, indications for use, and evidence of bacterial infection.AnimalsMedical record data were collected from dogs and cats examined at 14 VTHs.MethodsData were collected from VTH medical records of dogs and cats examined by primary care, urgent care, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, and surgery services on a single day during August 13-September 3, 2020. Data included signalment; clinical service; inpatient or outpatient status; clinical conditions; diagnostic tests; evidence of bacterial infection; intended reason for AU; name and route of antibiotics prescribed.ResultsOf 883 dogs and cats, 322 (36.5%) were prescribed at least 1 antibiotic. Among 285 antibiotics administered systemically intended for treatment of infection, 10.9% were prescribed without evidence of infection. The most common class of antibiotics presribed for systemic administration was potentiated penicillin for dogs (115/346, 33.3%) and cats (27/80, 33.8%). For dogs and cats, first-generation cephalosporins (93/346, 26.9% and 11/80, 13.8%, respectively) and fluoroquinolones (51/346, 14.7% and 19/80, 23.8%, respectively) was second or third most-prescribed. Common AU indications included skin, respiratory, and urinary conditions, and perioperative use.Conclusions and clinical importanceCollaborative data collection provides a sustainable methodology to generate national AU prevalence estimates and bring attention to areas requiring additional research and detailed data collection. These efforts can also identify practice improvement opportunities in settings where future veterinarians are trained.

Abstract Background Co-production of research with communities and stakeholders is recognised as best practice, but despite this, transparent reporting and reflective accounts on co-producing research is lacking. Born in Bradford Age of Wonder (AoW) is a large longitudinal health research project, following the health trajectories of up to 30,000 young people across the Bradford district; moreover, AoW has been entirely co-produced with teachers, parents, and young people. This paper describes the co-production of the Born in Bradford Age of Wonder (AoW) project and shares general reflections on co-production from peer researchers involved in co-producing AoW. Methods A co-operative inquiry (CI) approach was used to gather written reflections on co-production from ten peer researchers (one teacher, one parent, eight young people) involved in co-producing the AoW project. Written reflections were collected and rough “themes” were identified using thematic analysis. Results Four key ‘themes’ were identified: (1) promoting young people’s voice and views (2) identifying impacts of co-production, (3) fostering a collaborative ethos, and (4) suggested improvements to the co-production work in AoW. Peer researchers’ reflections highlighted how co-production can positively impact research projects such as AoW, whilst also holding broader benefits including giving young people a voice, facilitating their personal development, and fostering a collaborative ethos both within AoW and with partner organisations. Suggested improvements to AoW co-production included supporting greater numbers of young people and researchers to engage in co-production, organising more regular sessions, and establishing clearer communication channels. Conclusions Peer researchers’ reflections highlight positive impacts of engaging in co-production, both for research projects (including AoW) and for peer researchers’ personal and professional development. That said, continued efforts are needed in AoW to meet young people’s needs and interests, maintain trusting relationships, and foster sustained growth of co-production efforts within and beyond the AoW project. Evaluation of AoW co-production, along with wider partnership building are key to these efforts.

Abstract Objective Mental health complaints are prevalent among people with epilepsy, yet there are major barriers that prevent access to psychological care, including high out‐of‐pocket costs and a lack of accessible specialized services. The purpose of the current study is to examine the comparative efficacy, acceptability, cost‐effectiveness, and long‐term outcomes of a digital psychological intervention when delivered under two models of care (i.e., guided vs. unguided) in supporting the mental health and functioning of adults with epilepsy. Method Approximately 375 participants across Australia will be enrolled. Eligible participants will have a confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy, experience difficulties with their emotional health, be at least 18 years of age, and live in Australia. Participants will be randomized (2:2:1) to receive the Wellbeing Neuro Course, a 10‐week internet‐delivered program, with (i.e., guided) or without guidance by a mental health clinician (i.e., unguided), or be allocated to a treatment‐as‐usual waiting‐list control group. Participants will complete online questionnaires at pre‐, post‐treatment, and 3‐ and 12‐month follow‐up and consent to have their data linked to their medical records to capture healthcare system resource use and costs. Analysis Primary outcome measures will be symptoms of depression and anxiety. A cost‐utility analysis will be undertaken using the Australian healthcare system perspective and according to current economic evaluation guidelines. Resource use and costs to the healthcare system during the study period will be captured via data linkage to relevant administrative datasets in Australia. Significance The results of this trial will provide important data concerning the relative outcomes of these different models of care and will inform the integration of digital psychological interventions translation into healthcare services. Ethics and Dissemination The Human Research Ethics Committee of Macquarie University approved the proposed study (Reference No: 520231325151475). Plain Language Summary This study seeks to find out if a 10‐week online psychological treatment can improve the mental health and well‐being of Australian adults with epilepsy. Around 375 participants will be randomly assigned to different groups: one will receive treatment with guidance from mental health clinician (guided group), one without guidance (unguided group), and one starting later (waiting control group). All participants will fill out the same outcome measures online. The main goal of this research is to compare these groups and assess how well the treatment works in improving mental health outcomes.

BackgroundAmphotericin-B (AmB) is an essential medication for the treatment of life-threatening systemic mycoses but the incidence and risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) after its administration are not known in dogs.ObjectiveDetermine the incidence of and risk factors for AKI in dogs receiving AmB.AnimalsFifty-one client owned dogs receiving AmB for the treatment of systemic mycoses.MethodsRetrospective study. Signalment, potential risk factors, AKI development (creatinine ≥0.3 mg/dL from baseline), drug formulation (deoxycholate [AmB-D] or lipid complex [ABLC]), dose, and treatment duration were recorded. The probability of an AKI diagnosis was evaluated using a log-rank test. The incidence of AKI and odds ratios were calculated for potential risk factors.ResultsIncidence of AKI was 5/12 (42%) for dogs receiving AmB-D and 14/39 (36%) for dogs receiving ABLC. Of the 19 dogs that developed AKI, 16 (84%) continued treatment after a pause in the planned dosing protocol. BackgroundThe ability to detect bacteriuria in dogs with a point-of-care test might improve medical care and antimicrobial stewardship.Hypothesis and objectiveA rapid immunoassay (RIA; RapidBac) will provide acceptable sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of bacteriuria.AnimalsForty-four client-owned dogs with a clinical indication for urinalysis and aerobic bacterial urine culture.MethodsProspective study. Urine, collected by cystocentesis, was submitted for urinalysis and culture at a diagnostic laboratory. Owners completed an enrollment questionnaire regarding their dogs' clinical signs. The RIA was performed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Results were compared to culture.ResultsForty-four urine specimens were evaluated from 44 dogs. The sensitivity and specificity of the RIA test to detect bacteriuria compared to urine culture were 81.8% (95% CI, 65.7%-97.9%) and 95.5% (95% CI, 86.8%-99.9%), respectively. For cultures yielding ≥103  CFU/mL, sensitivity increased to 90.0% (95% CI, 76.9%-100%) and specificity was similar at 95.2% (95% CI, 86.1%-99.9%). Malodorous urine, bacteriuria, and pyuria were more likely to be present in dogs with positive RIA or urine culture results compared to dogs with negative results.Conclusions and clinical importanceThe RIA was easy to perform and had good sensitivity and excellent specificity in this group of dogs. The RIA might be a useful screening test for decision-making regarding antimicrobial therapy in dogs with a clinical indication for urine culture. Consideration could be given to amending the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Disease definition of bacterial cystitis as the presence of signs of lower urinary tract disease together with positive culture or a positive RIA.

Background: In internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) programs, beyond standardized core ICBT lessons, brief additional resources are sometimes available to clients to address comorbid concerns or offer additional information/strategies. These resources remain understudied in terms of how they are selected and perceived by clients, as well as their relationship to satisfaction and outcomes. Methods: Among clients (N = 793) enrolled in a 5-lesson transdiagnostic ICBT course, we examined client use and perceptions of 18 additional resources at 8 weeks in terms of whether clients found resources informative (yes/no) and or helpful (yes/no). Resources elaborated on cognitive strategies (managing beliefs, risk calculation) or on managing specific problems (agricultural stress, alcohol misuse, anger, assertiveness, chronic conditions, communication, grief, health anxiety, motivation, pain, panic, postpartum depression/anxiety, PTSD, sleep, workplace accomodations, worry). Clients also completed symptom measures and ICBT satisfaction questions at 8 weeks. Results: Approximately 50 % (n = 398) of clients rated the resources and, on average, clients reported that 3.35 (SD = 3.34) resources were informative and 2.35 (SD = 2.52) resources were helpful as measured by direct questions developed for this study. Higher pre-treatment PTSD and GAD scores were related to a greater number of resources perceived as informative and or helpful. Rating more resources as informative and or helpful had a weak but positive association with ICBT satisfaction and depression, anxiety, PTSD and insomnia change scores. Limitations of the study include that 31 % (n = 245) did not respond to questions about use of resources and 18.9 % (n = 150) said they did not review resources. Conclusions: There is considerable use of diverse additional resources in ICBT in routine care. Associations suggest that clients are using resources to personalize treatment to their needs and these resources are associated with treatment satisfaction and outcomes. The correlational associations between symptoms and perceived helpfulness of resources can help inform personalization algorithms to optimize ICBT delivery for clients. Further research on how to match clients with, encourage use of, and maximize benefits of resources would be beneficial.

Abstract Introduction People living with HIV (PLWH) have higher rates of non‐infectious comorbid diseases (NCDs) than individuals without HIV. We characterized the risk of NCDs among PLWH with undetectable viral load and persistent low‐level viraemia (pLLV) in the African Cohort Study (AFRICOS). We secondarily quantified the role of immune activation in the association between LLV and NCDs. Methods AFRICOS enrols participants in 12 clinics in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria. Abstract Background Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with a predilection for the genitalia. Although, the association between squamous cell cancer and genital LS is well established, a link with genital melanoma has not been thoroughly explored. However, we have recently published a case series of penile melanoma where 9/11 (82%) of patients seen over a 10 year period with penile melanoma were retrospectively found to have histological and/or clinical evidence of genital LS on review. Objectives The aim of this study was to illuminate further the relationship between vulval melanoma and genital LS by reviewing all the cases managed by our hospital and undertaking a literature review. Methods We identified all the cases with a diagnosis of vulval melanoma over a 16‐year period (2006–2022) where histology was available. The clinical notes were retrospectively reviewed, and the histological features of all cases were reassessed by two independent mutually ‘blinded’ histopathologists. We also performed a literature review of genital LS in patients with vulval melanoma. Results A total of 11 patients with vulval melanoma were identified for the review. Histopathological review found evidence of genital LS in seven of them (64%). Genital LS was not documented in any of the original histology reports. Clinical notes and letters were available in nine cases. The literature review identified 12 relevant studies with a total of 18 patients. Twelve cases concerned adult women, and six concerned female children. Conclusion The presence of genital LS in as high as 64% of our vulval melanoma cases might indicate a causative relationship between genital LS and vulval melanoma. The pathogenesis of vulval melanoma remains largely unknown. Although ultraviolet radiation is an important pathogenic factor for cutaneous melanoma, it cannot be a factor in vulval melanoma. While possible mechanisms behind this association remain unclear, it is possible that chronic inflammation from genital LS leads to melanocytic distress and increased mutagenesis.

BackgroundSpecific daily actions (eg, goal setting, meaningful activities) are associated with mental health. Performing specific daily actions at a higher frequency is associated with significantly lower baseline symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as better psychological treatment outcomes for depression and anxiety. ObjectiveThis study explored how the frequency of specific daily actions associated with mental health may differ prior to, during, and following treatment according to demographic and clinical characteristics. MethodsUsing a sample of 448 patients from an Australian national digital psychology service, we examined baseline differences in daily action frequency and changes in daily action frequency during a digital psychological treatment according to demographic and clinical subgroups. A total of 5 specific types of daily actions were measured using the Things You Do Questionnaire: healthy thinking, meaningful activities, goals and plans, healthy habits, and social connections. ResultsThe frequency of daily actions differed according to employment status (largest P=.005) and educational level (largest P=.004). Daily action frequency was lower in those participants with more severe or chronic depression or anxiety symptoms (largest P=.004). BackgroundA large number of modifiable and measurable daily actions are thought to impact mental health. The “Things You Do” refers to 5 types of daily actions that have been associated with mental health: healthy thinking, meaningful activities, goals and plans, healthy habits, and social connections. Previous studies have reported the psychometric properties of the Things You Do Questionnaire (TYDQ)–21-item (TYDQ21). The 21-item version, however, has an uneven distribution of items across the 5 aforementioned factors and may be lengthy to administer on a regular basis. ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and evaluate a brief version of the TYDQ. To accomplish this, we identified the top 10 and 15 items on the TYDQ21 and then evaluated the performance of the 10-item and 15-item versions of the TYDQ in community and treatment-seeking samples. MethodsUsing confirmatory factor analysis, the top 2 or 3 items were used to develop the 10-item and 15-item versions, respectively. Model fit, reliability, and validity were examined for both versions in 2 samples: a survey of community adults (n=6070) and adults who completed an assessment at a digital psychology service (n=14,878). Treatment responsivity was examined in a subgroup of participants (n=448). ResultsParallel analysis supported the 5-factor structure of the TYDQ. The brief (10-item and 15-item) versions were associated with better model fit than the 21-item version, as revealed by its comparative fit index, root-mean-square error of approximation, and Tucker-Lewis index. Configural, metric, and scalar invariance were supported. The 15-item version explained more variance in the 21-item scores than the 10-item version. Internal consistency was appropriate (eg, the 15-item version had a Cronbach α of >0.90 in both samples) and there were no marked differences between how the brief versions correlated with validated measures of depression or anxiety symptoms. The measure was responsive to treatment. ConclusionsThe 15-item version is appropriate for use as a brief measure of daily actions associated with mental health while balancing brevity and clinical utility. Further research is encouraged to replicate our psychometric evaluation in other settings (eg, face-to-face services). Summary: Background: Ross River virus (RRV), Australia's most notifiable vector-borne disease transmitted through mosquito bites, has seen increased transmission due to rising temperatures. Quantifying the burden of RRV infection attributable to increasing temperatures (both current and future) is pivotal to inform prevention strategies in the context of climate change. Methods: As RRV-related deaths are rare in Australia, we utilised years lived with disability (YLDs) associated with RRV infection data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) Burden of Disease database between 2003 and 2018. We obtained relative risks per 1 °C temperature increase in RRV infection from a previous meta-analysis. Exposure distributions for each Köppen-Geiger climate zone were calculated separately and compared with the theoretical-minimum-risk exposure distribution to calculate RRV burden attributable to increasing temperatures during the baseline period (2003–2018), and projected future burdens for the 2030s and 2050s under two greenhouse gas emission scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5), two adaptation scenarios, and different population growth series. Findings: During the baseline period (2003–2018), increasing mean temperatures contributed to 35.8 (±0.5) YLDs (19.1%) of the observed RRV burden in Australia. The mean temperature attributable RRV burden varied across climate zones and jurisdictions. Under both RCP scenarios, the projected RRV burden is estimated to increase in the future despite adaptation scenarios. By the 2050s, without adaptation, the RRV burden could reach 45.8 YLDs under RCP4.5 and 51.1 YLDs under RCP8.5. Implementing a 10% adaptation strategy could reduce RRV burden to 41.8 and 46.4 YLDs, respectively. Interpretation: These findings provide scientific evidence for informing policy decisions and guiding resource allocation for mitigating the future RRV burden. The current findings underscore the need to develop location-specific adaptation strategies for climate-sensitive disease control and prevention. Depression is common during pregnancy and is associated with reduced adherence to HIV-related care, though little is known about perinatal trajectories of depression and viral suppression among women living with HIV (WLHV) in sub-Saharan Africa. We sought to assess any association between perinatal depressive symptoms and viral non-suppression among WLWH. Depressive symptomatology and viral load data were collected every 6 months from WLWH enrolled in the African Cohort Study (AFRICOS; January 2013-February 2020). Generalized estimating equations modeled associations between depressive symptoms [Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) ≥ 16] and viral non-suppression. Of 1722 WLWH, 248 (14.4%) had at least one pregnancy (291 total) and for 61 pregnancies (21.0%), women reported depressive symptoms (13.4% pre-conception, 7.6% pregnancy, 5.5% one-year postpartum). Depressive symptomatology was associated with increased odds of viral non-suppression (aOR 2.2; 95% CI 1.2-4.0, p = 0.011). Identification and treatment of depression among women with HIV may improve HIV outcomes for mothers.

This article will provide a brief reflection on Garwood's summary of research on special education teacher burnout and fidelity of implementation in delivery of evidence-based behavioral interventions. Subsequently, we provide a conceptual and empirical summary of key issues for supporting teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs) through the lens of BEST in CLASS (a Tier 2 intervention supporting teacher's use of evidence-based practices with students with or at risk for EBD). This summary will (a) outline the theoretical structure that supports how BEST in CLASS may improve teacher-student relationships and reduce teacher burnout, (b) demonstrate the influence of BEST in CLASS on teacher burnout in a sample of elementary school teachers and discuss findings, (c) propose that researchers consider burnout within the context of dynamic classroom systems, and (d) link these suggestions to theoretical frameworks. We conclude with a discussion of Garwood's call to action and implications for future research. [For the corresponding grantee submission, see ED628149.]

Abstract Background Pancreatitis is an important cause of disease and death in dogs. Available circulating biomarkers are not sufficiently sensitive and specific for a definitive diagnosis. Hypothesis Circulating microRNAs would be differentially expressed in dogs with chronic pancreatitis and could have potential as diagnostic biomarkers. Animals Healthy controls (n = 19) and dogs with naturally occurring pancreatitis (n = 17). Methods A retrospective case‐control study. Dogs with pancreatitis were included if they satisfied diagnostic criteria for pancreatitis as adjudicated by 3 experts. MicroRNA was extracted from stored serum samples and sequenced. Reads were mapped to mature microRNA sequences in the canine, mouse, and human genomes. Differentially expressed microRNAs were identified and the potential mechanistic relevance explored using Qiagen Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA). Results Reads mapping to 196 mature microRNA sequences were detected. The Multi-Carrier Modulation (MCM) technique in the Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) propagation mode poses a challenge due to the ionosphere’s dynamic behavior. The selection of the main bandwidth and transmission frequency in the MCM-NVIS system should consider the different ionospheric refraction indexes within each available frequency of the ionosphere channel. This ensures that all transmitted sub-carriers arrive at the receiver at an acceptable time. It is important to note that not all transmission frequencies may reach the receiver, and the propagation time of each received frequency may differ significantly. Using sub-carrier frequencies with varying propagation times in the MCM technique may negatively impact the system’s performance. Therefore, information on the NVIS propagation mode frequency window with homogeneous Time of Flight (ToF) values is crucial for successfully implementing the MCM technique. In this paper, we explore the frequency window with homogeneous ToF values for NVIS propagation based on ionograms. The width of the frequency window and its center frequency variation can be used to determine the main bandwidth and transmission frequency of the MCM-NVIS system. Our numeric simulation with the inputs of the widest frequency window based on the ionograms at Kupang in 2022 shows that the maximum value of ergodic capacity is up to $10^{6}$ bps at 20 dB SNR during the daytime.

Babesia species are intraerythrocytic piroplasms that can result in disease characterized by hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Of the 5 species that are known to infect canids in the United States, Babesia conradae is most frequently diagnosed in California, and Babesia vogeli is prevalent in the US. Despite the recent re-emergence of B. conradae, the mechanism of transmission is not known. Coyotes (Canis latrans) have been a proposed reservoir of disease, and previous work has shown that dogs with known aggressive interactions with coyotes are at greater risk for infection. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of B. conradae in wild coyote populations in California to assess the viability of coyotes as a potential source of infection for domestic dogs. Four hundred and sixty-one splenic samples were obtained during post-mortem examination of coyote carcasses from Southern California, Fresno, and Hopland. Demographic data including age, sex, cause of death, and urbanity were collected for each coyote. DNA was extracted from samples and amplified using real-time PCR with primers specific for the B. conradae ITS-2 gene. The 18S gene was amplified and sequenced using conventional PCR primers specific to the Babesia genus from any coyotes positive for B. conradae. In total, 22 coyotes tested positive for B. conradae in Fresno (n = 15), Orange (n = 4), San Bernardino (n = 1), and Los Angeles counties (n = 1) with an overall prevalence of 4.8%. Canine babesiosis results from infection of 1 of 5 identified protozoal species in the United States (Babesia conradae, Babesia sp. "coco," Babesia gibsoni, Babesia vogeli, and Babesia vulpes). They are part of the Apicomplexa family of protozoa and are obligate intraerythrocytic parasites. Domestic and wild canids are suspected of being intermediate hosts. This updated article aims to provide practical guidance about the clinical manifestations of disease, treatment options, and outcomes. In addition, the authors hope to provide some clarity about the taxonomy and nomenclature of these organisms, as they have undergone multiple changes since their initial discovery.

To produce actionable and accessible assessment findings that drive innovation and improvement, strategies should be implemented at the national and local level throughout each stage of the assessment process. Fostering these findings is the need to authentically engage stakeholders throughout the assessment process. Done well, the engagement of stakeholders' aids in the creation of relevant outcomes, and, importantly, sharing results using strong data visualization techniques with data storytelling elements. This paper is a summary of the strategies and tactics compiled to address the Grand Challenges in Assessment initiative. The authors listed in this project contributed many hours of discussion, literature review, professional scholarship, and shared personal experiences at their institutions. The product is a collaboration that cannot be attributed to one person or to rank the efforts of team member contributions. The first two listed authors cochaired the group, and the team members are listed as authors in alphabetical order.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer associated with shorter survival and a higher likelihood of recurrence. In early TNBC, platinum chemotherapy has been shown to improve pathological complete response (pCR); however, its effect on long-term survival outcomes has not been fully elucidated. Methods: Randomised controlled trials examining neoadjuvant or adjuvant platinum chemotherapy for early TNBC were included. Primary outcomes were disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Secondary outcomes were pCR, treatment adherence, grade III or IV toxicity related to chemotherapy, and quality of life. Results: From 3972 records, we included 20 published studies. All studies reporting DFS and OS used carboplatin. Inclusion of platinum chemotherapy improved DFS (neoadjuvant: hazard ratio (HR) 0.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.53 to 0.75; adjuvant: HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.54 to 0.88) and OS (neoadjuvant: HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.86; adjuvant: 0.70, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.96). Our analysis confirmed platinum chemotherapy increased pCR rates (risk ratio (RR) 1.44, 95% CI 1.31 to 1.59). There were no differences seen in examined subgroups. Platinum chemotherapy was associated with reduced dose intensity and increased haematological toxicity. Conclusions: Platinum-based chemotherapy using carboplatin in the adjuvant or neoadjuvant setting improves long-term outcomes of DFS and OS in early TNBC, with no evidence of differences by subgroup. This was at the cost of more frequent chemotherapy delays and dose reductions, and greater haematological toxicity. These findings support the use of platinum-based chemotherapy for people with early TNBC.

Abstract Peat‐forming wet woodlands (forested wetlands) are naturally occurring carbon‐dense ecosystems that have considerable potential to form an important part of net zero woodland establishment and peatland strategies, as well as provide crucial co‐benefits to restore biodiversity and regulate hydrological systems. Despite their potential, temperate peat‐forming wet woodlands have been widely lost, are critically understudied and are being overlooked in land‐use strategies. Unlike temperate ‘dry’ woodlands, some wet woodlands are peat forming and can store large amounts of carbon below‐ground in peat in addition to the carbon in the tree biomass. The complex structure of these peat‐forming wet woodlands creates high abiotic heterogeneity, resulting in a wide variety of microhabitats to support high levels of biodiversity, and this structural complexity can also increase water storage in the landscape and slow flood flows, providing natural flood protection. Co‐written by experts in academia and UK Government, we highlight critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of peat‐forming wet woodlands that, once addressed, could form the basis for radical changes to their inclusion in net zero and land‐use policies. Policy and practice implications: The significant role that peatland restoration has to play in reaching net zero presents an immediate policy opportunity to consider the full range of ecosystems to achieve net zero targets, while protecting and enhancing socio‐ecological sustainability. In co‐writing this paper, our aim is to stimulate discussion and sharing of knowledge between those involved in research, policy and practice in order to strengthen the evidence base for peat‐forming wet woodland re‐establishment and future management. We call on researchers, policymakers and land managers to take temperate wet woodlands from understudied and overlooked, to integrated ecosystems that hold great promise in the contributions they can make as nature‐based solutions.

Abstract This research, carried out in two phases, is a response to questions raised regarding the validity of surveys based on artificial nest boxes, positioned at around 1.4 m from ground level, to determine the presence of dormice (Muscardinus avellanarius). This species is generally considered to be an arboreal mammal that visits the ground infrequently other than for winter hibernation. In Phase 1, artificial nest boxes were positioned high in the tree canopy and at standard height on the same tree. The presence of leaves and material from the woodland floor in nests informed the design of Phase 2 with the inclusion of a third box, on an isolated post with no arboreal connectivity, carried out on a different site. Results demonstrate the presence of dormice and their nests in artificial nest boxes positioned in the tree canopy, at conventional height and on isolated posts with no arboreal connectivity. This suggests that the current method of surveying for dormice using boxes at around 1.4 m from ground level may not result in robust ‘likely absence’ conclusions for surveys aimed at determining the presence of dormice on a site. Previous experience of long‐term surveys has indicated that use of artificial next boxes declines with age of box. This was confirmed over the 6 years of the second project reported here. While often taken to indicate decline in population alternative explanations are proposed and this is highlighted as requiring further investigation. The apparent decline of hazel dormice and the contraction of their range is evidenced by surveys carried out according to current ‘good practice’ guidance. The results of this research suggest that these should be reviewed and revised to ensure conservation objectives are being met.

BackgroundIsavuconazole is a triazole antifungal drug that has shown good efficacy in human patients. Absorption and pharmacokinetics have not been evaluated in cats.ObjectivesTo determine the pharmacokinetics of isavuconazole in cats given a single IV or PO dose.AnimalsEight healthy, adult research cats.MethodsFour cats received 100 mg capsules of isavuconazole PO. Four cats received 5 mg/kg isavuconazole solution IV. Serum was collected at predetermined intervals for analysis using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Data were analyzed using a 2-compartment uniform weighting pharmacokinetic analysis with lag time for PO administration and a 2 compartment, 1/y2 weighting for IV administration. Predicted 24 and 48-hour dosing intervals of 100 mg isavuconazole administered PO were modeled and in vitro plasma protein binding was assessed.ResultsBoth PO and IV drug administration resulted in high serum concentrations. Intravenous and PO formulations of isavuconazole appear to be able to be used interchangeably. Peak serum isavuconazole concentrations occurred 5 ± 3.8 hours after PO administration with an elimination rate half-life of 66.2 ± 55.3 hours. Intersubject variability was apparent in both the PO and IV groups. Two cats vomited 6 to 8 hours after PO administration. No adverse effects were observed in the IV group. Oral bioavailability was estimated to be approximately 88%. Serum protein binding was calculated to be approximately 99.0% ± 0.03%.Conclusions and clinical importanceIsavuconazole might prove to be useful in cats with fungal disease given its favorable pharmacokinetics. Additional studies on safety, efficacy, and tolerability of long-term isavuconazole use are needed.

Abstract In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), there is an unmet need for novel biomarkers that reliably track kidney injury, demonstrate treatment-response, and predict outcomes. Here, we investigate the potential of retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) to achieve these ends in a series of prospective studies of patients with pre-dialysis CKD (including those with a kidney transplant), patients with kidney failure undergoing kidney transplantation, living kidney donors, and healthy volunteers. Compared to health, we observe similar retinal thinning and reduced macular volume in patients with CKD and in those with a kidney transplant. However, the choroidal thinning observed in CKD is not seen in patients with a kidney transplant whose choroids resemble those of healthy volunteers. In CKD, the degree of choroidal thinning relates to falling eGFR and extent of kidney scarring. Following kidney transplantation, choroidal thickness increases rapidly (~10%) and is maintained over 1-year, whereas gradual choroidal thinning is seen during the 12 months following kidney donation. In patients with CKD, retinal and choroidal thickness independently associate with eGFR decline over 2 years. These observations highlight the potential for retinal OCT to act as a non-invasive monitoring and prognostic biomarker of kidney injury.

Objectives: HIV and malaria coinfection impacts disease management and clinical outcomes. This study investigated hematologic abnormalities in malaria-asymptomatic people living with HIV (PLHIV) in regions with differing malaria transmission. Methods: Study participants were enrolled in the African Cohort Study: two sites in Kenya, one in Uganda, and one in Nigeria. Data was collected at enrollment and every 6 months. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios for associations between HIV/malaria status and anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leucopenia. Results: Samples from 1587 participants with one or more visits comprising 1471 (92.7%) from PLHIV and 116 (7.3%) without HIV were analyzed.
