Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, and leads to a substantial burden on healthcare services. Effective and timely management of patients with COPD has been essential to alleviate COPD exacerbation, improve the quality of life, and consequently reduce the economic burden. To achieve this, we propose an innovative tele-medicine system based on Smart Breath Analyzer (SBA) device and devoted to the tele-monitoring of exhaled air in patients suffering chronic respiratory failure and home-assisted by mechanical ventilation. In this work the main characteristics of the developed tele-medicine system are presented together with preliminary pre-clinical test results. The preliminary tests demonstrated the effective possibility to enter the SBAs in medical practice in home-ventilo-therapy protocols by suitable interpretation of the monitored parameters from a physiological point of view. Thanks to a network composed by many SBA devices that send patients data to a remote server, the doctor can tele-monitor the status of patient in order to check any state of exacerbation of the disease and consequently improve quality of life in COPD.

Abstract

In this work, the perception of affordances was analysed in terms of cognitive neuroscience during an interactive experience in a virtual reality environment. In particular, we chose a virtual reality scenario based on the Leap Motion controller: this sensor device captures the movements of the user’s hand and fingers, which are reproduced on a computer screen by the proper software applications. For our experiment, we employed a sample of 10 subjects matched by age and sex and chosen among university students. The subjects took part in motor imagery training and immersive affordance condition (a virtual training with Leap Motion and a haptic training with real objects). After each training sessions the subject performed a recognition task, in order to investigate event-related potential (ERP) components. The results revealed significant differences in the attentional components during the Leap Motion training. During Leap Motion session, latencies increased in the occipital lobes, which are entrusted to visual sensory; in contrast, latencies decreased in the frontal lobe, where the brain is mainly activated for attention and action planning. Abstract

Performance improvements in graphics hardware have made it possible to visualize complex virtual environments and provided opportunities to interact with these in a more realistic way. In this paper two different types of Virtual Reality applications for simulating a billiards game are presented. In one application a commercial haptic interface is used to provide a force feedback, thus rendering the interaction realistic and exciting to the user. However, there are limitations due to the use of a commercial haptic device which has not been specifically designed for this game and thus limits the workspace. Also, in the commercial device, it is not possible to use the left hand when aiming and striking the ball, as you can in a real game of billiards. In order to overcome these limitations another type of simulation has been developed using a real billiard cue; its movements are reproduced in the virtual environment using a visual marker detection system. No force feedback is provided to the player. In the game simulations the virtual environments have been built using the development environment XVR in the first simulator and OpenSceneGraph in the second; rigid body dynamics have been simulated utilizing the ODE and PhysX physics engines. ARToolkit was the visual marker-based detection system utilized to replicate the movements of the real cue used by the player in the virtual environment of the second simulator. Abstract

The aim of this work is to develop a realistic virtual model of the human brain that could be used in a neurosurgical simulation for both educational and preoperative planning purposes. The goal of such a system would be to enhance the practice of surgery students, avoiding the use of animals, cadavers and plastic phantoms. A surgeon, before carrying out the real procedure, will, with this system, be able to rehearse by using a surgical simulator based on detailed virtual reality models of the human brain, reconstructed with real patient's medical images. In order to obtain a realistic and useful simulation we focused our research on the physical modelling of the brain as a deformable body and on the interactions with surgical instruments. The developed prototype is based on the mass-spring-damper model and, in order to obtain deformations similar to the real ones, a three tiered structure has been built. In this way, we have obtained local and realistic deformations using an ad-hoc point distribution in the volume where the contact between the brain surface and a surgical instrument takes place. Abstract

The developed system is the first prototype of a virtual interface designed to avoid contact with the computer so that the surgeon is able to visualize 3D models of the patient's organs more effectively during surgical procedure or to use this in the pre-operative planning. The doctor will be able to rotate, to translate and to zoom in on 3D models of the patient's organs simply by moving his finger in free space; in addition, it is possible to choose to visualize all of the organs or only some of them. All of the interactions with the models happen in real-time using the virtual interface which appears as a touch-screen suspended in free space in a position chosen by the user when the application is started up. Finger movements are detected by means of an optical tracking system and are used to simulate touch with the interface and to interact by pressing the buttons present on the virtual screen. Abstract

Recent years have seen revolutionary changes in CAS field thanks to the introduction of advanced Augmented Reality technologies. In this brief will be presented the overall study carried out in order to develop an AR application to support the doctor during the surgery. It will be described the way the surgeon can perform a more accurate diagnosis by using not just the traditional bidimensional grey-scale CT/MRI images, but also a more realistic three-dimensional marker-based visualization of the patient’s organs. Specific focus will be given to the extremely beneficial way the surgeon can interact with this kind of digital information in the operating room. It will be presented a highly innovative gesture-control device which allows the doctor to interact with IT equipment in a touchless and as natural as possible way, without coming into contact with it or interrupting the surgery, thus preserving the surgical environment from the danger of contamination.

Abstract

Maxillo-facial surgery is a surgical field where surgical planning and navigation tools are commonly used but there is still a visualization gap among planned surgical activities and those in the operating room. We propose an Augmented Reality platform that includes a planning module and a drill guidance system. Some laboratory tests on 3D printed mandibles have been carried out in order to evaluate the system guidance uncertainty with different sets of fiducial points. The obtained mean value of guidance uncertainty has been of 1.37 mm when 2 anatomical points and 3 implanted screws were used and 1.43 mm when 5 anatomical points were used. The use of three fixed screws reduces the system mean guidance uncertainty and surgeons judged the augmented reality technology helpful in this kind of surgical procedures.

Abstract

The paper deals with the development of virtual surgical simulator for microanastomosis developed within the INTERREG (Italy-Greece) MICRO project. Microanastomosis is a surgical technique that involves, under optical magnification, the conjunction of blood vessels of a few millimeters diameter and is used also to support the surgical treatment of tumours. This manuscript describes the two principal solutions analysed during the progress of the MICRO project. The first step concerns the development of the simulator using the Unity3D engine; the second step describes an evolution of the surgical simulator to support remote control by a haptic interface via web using the WebGL platform based on JavaScript code. For both, a force feedback module has been implemented that reads data coming from the simulator and converts them to generate a servo control action on the haptic interface. For both solutions, some results of the implemented simulator are described .

Abstract

Minimally invasive surgery offers advantages that make it the best choice for many diseases. The Virtual Reality technology gives a great support to this kind of surgical procedures through medical image processing and visualization, 3D organ's reconstruction and intra-operative surgical guidance. In this paper is presented an advanced visualization and navigation system and the surgeon has the possibility to visualize both the traditional patient information, as the CT image set, and a 3D model of the patient's anatomy built from this. Two different visualization modalities are available in real time and dynamically. According to the surgeon needs, it is possible to obtain the automatic reslicing of the orthogonal planes in order to have an accurate visualization of the 3D model and slices exactly next to the actual position of the surgical instrument tip. In addition, it is possible to activate the clipping modality that allows cutting the 3D model in correspondence of a chosen visualization plane. The system can be used as support for the diagnosis, for the surgical preoperative planning and also for an image-guided surgery.

Abstract

In this paper we describe part of the MediaEvo project on a Digital Heritage application aimed to serve as an edutainment tool. Visitors are able to virtually explore the reconstructed heritage environment of Otranto town and learn about the medieval world through a virtual experience. The project aims to identify the methodologies related to interactive learning and an approach oriented to the instructive paths which take advantage of multi-sensory media and their level of interaction. At the moment the MediaEvo project is in progress and in this paper the obtained results are shown.
