Search

Synchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons above the photosphere of a relativistic ejecta is a natural candidate for the dominant process for the prompt GRB emission. There is however a tension between the predicted low-energy spectral index $\alpha=-3/2$ in the fast cooling regime and observations. Radiating electrons have time to travel away from their acceleration site and may experience an evolving magnetic field. To study the impact on the synchrotron spectrum, we compute the radiation from electrons in a decaying magnetic field, including adiabatic cooling, synchrotron radiation, IC scatterings and pair production. We explore the physical conditions in the comoving frame of the emission region and focus on the fast cooling regime where the radiative timescale of electrons with a Lorentz factor $\Gamma_{m}$ responsible for the peak of the emission, $t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})$, is much shorter than the dynamical timescale $t_{dyn}$. We find that the effect depends on the decay characteristic timescale $t_{B}$: (i) for a slow decay with $t_{B}\gtrsim 10 t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})$, the effect is very weak and the spectral shape is mostly determined by the impact of the IC scatterings on the electron cooling, leading to $-3/2\le \alpha\le -1$; (ii) for a fast decay with $0.1 t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})\lesssim t_{B}\lesssim 10 t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})$, the magnetic field decay has a strong impact, leading naturally to the synchrotron marginally fast cooling regime, where $\alpha$ tends to $-2/3$ while the radiative efficiency remains high. The high energy IC component is enhanced in this regime ; (iii) for an even faster decay, the whole electron population is slow cooling. We conclude that efficient synchrotron radiation in a rapidly decaying magnetic field can reproduce low-energy photon indices ranging from $\alpha=-3/2$ to $-2/3$, in agreement with the measured value in the majority of GRB spectra., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to A&A

We present a complete numerical model of the afterglow of a laterally structured relativistic ejecta from the radio to very high energies (VHE). This includes a self-consistent calculation of the synchrotron radiation, with its maximum frequency, and of synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scattering that takes the Klein-Nishina regime into account. Attenuation due to pair production is also included. This model is computationally efficient and allows multi-wavelength data fitting. As a validation test, the radiative model was used to fit the broad-band spectrum of GRB 190114C at 90 s up to the TeV range. The full model was then used to fit the afterglow of GW 170817 and predict its VHE emission. We find that the SSC flux at the peak was much dimmer than the upper limit from H.E.S.S. observations. However, we show that either a smaller viewing angle or a higher external density would make similar off-axis events detectable in the future at VHE, even above 100 Mpc with the sensitivity of the Cherenkov telescope array. High external densities are expected in the case of fast mergers, but the existence of a formation channel for these binary neutron stars is still uncertain. The early steep decay, a rapid decrease in X-ray flux as a function of time following the prompt emission, is a robust feature seen in almost all gamma-ray bursts with early enough X-ray observations. This peculiar phenomenon has often been explained as emission from high latitudes of the last flashing shell. However, in photospheric models of gamma-ray bursts, the timescale of high-latitude emission is generally short compared to the duration of the steep decay phase, and hence an alternative explanation is needed. In this paper, we show that the early steep decay can directly result from the final activity of the dying central engine. We find that the corresponding photospheric emission can reproduce both the temporal and spectral evolution observed. This requires a late-time behaviour that should be common to all GRB central engines, and we estimate the necessary evolution of the kinetic power and the Lorentz factor. If this interpretation is correct, observation of the early steep decay can grant us insights into the last stages of central activity, and provide new constraints on the late evolution of the Lorentz factor and photospheric radius., Comment: Updated to match the published version. GRB030329 displays one clear and, possibly, multiple less intense fast-rising ($\Delta t / t \sim 0.3$) jumps in its optical afterglow light curve. The decay rate of the optical light curve remains the same before and after the photon flux jumps. This may be the signature of energy injection into the forward and reverse shocked material at the front of the jet. In this study, we model the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) ejecta as a series of shells of material. We follow the dynamical evolution of the ejecta as it interacts with itself (i.e., internal shocks) and with the circumburst medium (i.e., external forward and reverse shocks), and we calculate the emission from each shock event assuming synchrotron emission. We confirm the viability of the model proposed by \citet{2003Natur.426..138G} in which the jumps in the optical afterglow light curve of GRB030329 are produced via refreshed shocks. The refreshed shocks may be the signatures of the collisions between earlier ejected material with an average Lorentz factor $\bar{\Gamma}\gtrsim 100$ and later ejected material with $\bar{\Gamma} \sim 10$ once the early material has decelerated due to interaction with the circumburst medium. We show that even if the late material is ejected with a spread of Lorentz factors, internal shocks naturally produce a narrow distribution of Lorentz factors ($\Delta\Gamma/\Gamma\lesssim0.1$), which is a necessary condition to produce the observed quick rise times of the jumps. These results imply a phase of internal shocks at some point in the dynamical evolution of the ejecta, which requires a low magnetization in the outflow., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We develop a model to explain the flaring activity in gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows within the framework of slightly misaligned observers to structured jets. We suggest that flares could be the manifestation of prompt dissipation within the core of the jet, appearing to a misaligned observer in the X-ray band because of less favorable Doppler boosting. These flares appear during the afterglow phase because of core--observer light travel delays. In this picture, the prompt emission recorded by this observer comes from material along their line of sight, in the lateral structure of the jet, outside the jet's core. We start by laying down the basic analytical framework to determine the flares characteristics as a function of those of the gamma-ray pulse an aligned observer would see. We show that there is viable parameter space to explain flares with typical observing times and luminosities. We then analytically explore this model, showing that it naturally produces flares with small aspect ratios, as observed. We perform fits of our model to two $Swift$/XRT flares representing two different types of morphology, to show that our model can capture both. The ejection time of the core jet material responsible of the flare is a critical parameter. While it always remains small compared to the observed time of the flare, confirming that our model does not require very late central engine activity, late ejection times are strongly favored, sometimes larger than the observed duration of the parent gamma-ray burst's prompt emission as measured by $T_{90}$., Comment: Main text 11 pages, 4 figures and 2 tables. The binary neutron star merger gravitational-wave signal GW170817 was followed by three electromagnetic counterparts, including a kilonova arising from the radioactivity of freshly synthesized $r$-process elements in ejecta from the merger. Finding kilonovae after gravitational-wave triggers is crucial for (i) the search for further counterparts, such as the afterglow, (ii) probing the diversity of kilonovae and their dependence on the system's inclination angle, and (iii) building a sample for multi-messenger cosmology. During the third observing run of the gravitational-wave interferometer network, no kilonova counterpart was found. We aim to predict the expected population of detectable kilonova signals for the upcoming O4 and O5 observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA instruments. Using a simplified criterion for gravitational-wave detection and a simple GW170817-calibrated model for the kilonova peak magnitude, we determine the rate of kilonovae in reach of follow-up campaigns and their distributions in magnitude for various bands. We briefly consider the case of GW190425, the only binary neutron star merger confirmed since GW170817, and obtain constraints on its inclination angle from the non-detection of its kilonova, assuming the source was below the follow-up thresholds. We also show that non-gravitational-wave-triggered kilonovae can be a numerous class of sources in future surveys and briefly discuss associations with short bright gamma-ray bursts. Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (LGRBs) have been shown to be powerful probes of the Universe, in particular to study the star formation rate up to very high redshift ($z \sim 9$). Since LGRBs are produced by only a small fraction of massive stars, it is paramount to have a good understanding of their underlying intrinsic population in order to use them as cosmological probes without introducing any unwanted bias. The goal of this work is to constrain and characterise this intrinsic population. We developed a Monte Carlo model where each burst is described by its redshift and its properties at the peak of the lightcurve. We derived the best fit parameters by comparing our synthetic populations to carefully selected observational constraints based on the CGRO/BATSE, Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT samples with appropriate flux thresholds. We explored different scenarios in terms of cosmic evolution of the luminosity function and/or of the redshift distribution as well as including or not the presence of intrinsic spectral-energetics (Ep-L) correlations. We find that the existence of an intrinsic Ep-L correlation is preferred but with a shallower slope than observed($\alpha_A \sim 0.3$) and a larger scatter ($\sim 0.4$ dex). We find a strong degeneracy between the cosmic evolution of the luminosity and of the LGRB rate, and show that a sample both larger and deeper than SHOALS by a factor of three is needed to lift this degeneracy. The observed We conclude that Ep-L correlation cannot be explained only by selection effects although these do play a role in shaping the observed relation. The degeneracy between cosmic evolution of the luminosity function and of the redshift distribution of LGRBs should be included in the uncertainties of star formation rate estimates; these amount to a factor of 10 at $z=6$ and up to a factor of 50 at $z=9$., Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures

We study the enrichment of the interstellar medium with rapid neutron capture (r-process) elements produced in binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. We use a semi-analytic model to describe galactic evolution, with merger rates and time delay distributions of BNS mergers consistent with the latest population synthesis models. In order to study the dispersion of the relative abundances of r-process elements and iron, we applied a turbulent mixing scheme, where the freshly synthesized elements are gradually dispersed in the interstellar medium. We show that within our model the abundances observed in Milky-Way stars, in particular the scatter at low metallicities, can be entirely explained by BNS mergers. Our results suggest that binary neutron star mergers could be the dominant source of r-process elements in the Galaxy., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures. Late activity of the central engine is often invoked in order to explain the flares observed in the early X-ray afterglow of gamma-ray bursts, either in the form of an active neutron star remnant or (fall-back) accretion onto a black hole. However, these scenarios are not always plausible, in particular when flares are delayed to very late times after the burst. Recently, a new scenario was proposed that suggests X-ray flares can be the result of the passing of a long-lived reverse shock through a stratified ejecta, with the advantage that it does not require late-time engine activity. In this work, we numerically demonstrate this scenario to be physically plausible, by performing onedimensional simulations of ejecta dynamics and emission using our novel moving-mesh relativistic hydrodynamics code. Improved efficiency and precision over previous work enables the exploration of a broader range of setups. We can introduce a more physically realistic description of the circumburst medium mass density. We can also locally trace the cooling of electrons when computing the broadband emission from these setups. We show that the synchrotron cooling timescale can dominate the flare decay time if the stratification in the ejecta is constrained to a localised angular region inside the jet, with size corresponding to the relativistic causal connection angle, and that it corresponds to values reported in observations. The only binary neutron star merger gravitational wave event with detected electromagnetic counterparts recorded to date is GRB170817A. This merger occurred in a rarefied medium with a density smaller than $10^{-3}-10^{-2}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$. Since kicks are imparted to neutron star binaries upon formation, and due to their long delay times before merger, such low-density circum-merger media are generally expected. However, there is some indirect evidence for fast-merging or low-kick binaries, which would coalesce in denser environments. Nonetheless, present astronomical data are largely inconclusive on the possibility of these high-density mergers. We describe a method to directly probe this hypothetical population of high-density mergers through multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star merger afterglows, exploiting the high sensitivity of these signals to the density of the merger environment. This method is based on a sample of merger afterglows that has yet to be collected. Its constraining power is large, even with a small sample of events. We discuss the method's limitations and applicability. Following the historical observation of GW170817 and its electromagnetic follow-up, new neutron star merger afterglows are expected to be observed as counterparts to gravitational wave signals during the next science runs of the gravitational interferometer network. The diversity of the observed population of afterglows of these future events is subject to various factors, which are (i) intrinsic, such as the energy of the ejecta, (ii) environmental, such as the ambient medium density or (iii) observational, such as the viewing angle and distance of the source. Through prescribing a population of mergers and modelling their afterglows, we study the diversity of those events to be observed jointly in gravitational waves and electromagnetic bands. Using multiple observational arguments, recent work has shown that cosmological GRBs are typically viewed at angles within, or close to the cores of their relativistic jets. One of those arguments relied on the lack of tens-of-days-long periods of very shallow evolution that would be seen in the afterglow light-curves of GRBs viewed at large angles. Motivated by these results, we consider that GRBs efficiently produce $\gamma$-rays only within a narrow region around the core. We show that, on these near-core lines-of-sight, structured jets naturally produce shallow phases in the X-ray afterglow of GRBs. These plateaus would be seen by a large fraction of observers and would last between $10^2-10^5$ s. They naturally reproduce the observed distributions of time-scales and luminosities as well as the inter-correlations between plateau duration, plateau luminosity and prompt $\gamma$-ray energy. An advantage of this interpretation is that it involves no late time energy injection which would be both challenging from the point of view of the central engine and, as we show here, less natural given the observed correlations between plateau and prompt properties., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Following the historical observations of GW170817 and its multi-wavelength afterglow, more radio afterglows from neutron star mergers are expected in the future as counterparts to gravitational wave inspiral signals. We wish to describe these events using our current knowledge of the population of neutron star mergers coming from gamma-ray burst science, and taking into account the sensitivities of current and future gravitational wave and radio detectors. We combine analytical models for the merger gravitational wave and radio afterglow signals to a population model prescribing the energetics, circum-merger density and other relevant parameters of the mergers. We report the expected distributions of observables (distance, orientation, afterglow peak time/flux, etc.) from future events and study how these can be used to further probe the population of binary neutron stars, their mergers and related outflows during future observing campaigns. In the case of the O3 run of the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration, the radio afterglow of one third of gravitational-wave-detected mergers should be detectable (and detected if the source is localized thanks to the kilonova counterpart) by the Very Large Array, and these events should have viewing angles similar to that of GW170817. These findings confirm the radio afterglow as a powerful insight on these events, though some key afterglow-related techniques, such as very long baseline interferometry imaging of the merger remnant, may no longer be feasible as the gravitational wave horizon increases., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The X-ray light curves of the early afterglow phase from gamma-ray bursts present a puzzling variability, including flares. The origin of these flares is still debated, and often associated with a late activity of the central engine. We discuss an alternative scenario where the central engine remains short-lived and flares are produced by the propagation of a long-lived reverse shock in a stratified ejecta. Here we focus on the hydrodynamics of the shock interactions. We perform one-dimensional ultrarelativistic hydrodynamic simulations with different initial internal structure in the gamma-ray burst ejecta. We use them to extract bolometric light curves and compare with a previous study based on a simplified ballistic model. We find a good agreement between both approaches, with similar slopes and variability in the light curves, but identify several weaknesses in the ballistic model: the density is underestimated in the shocked regions, and more importantly, late shock reflections are not captured. With accurate dynamics provided by our hydrodynamic simulations, we confirm that internal shocks in the ejecta lead to the formation of dense shells. The interaction of the long-lived reverse shock with a dense shell then produces a fast and intense increase of the dissipated power. Assuming that the emission is due to the synchrotron radiation from shock-accelerated electrons, and that the external forward shock is radiatively inefficient, we find that this results in a bright flare in the X-ray lightcurve, with arrival times, shapes, and duration in agreement with the observed properties of X-ray flares in GRB afterglows., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the strongest explosions in the Universe, which due to their extreme character likely involve some of the strongest magnetic fields in nature. This review discusses the possible roles of magnetic fields in GRBs, from their central engines, through the launching, acceleration and collimation of their ultra-relativistic jets, to the dissipation and particle acceleration that power their $\gamma$-ray emission, and the powerful blast wave they drive into the surrounding medium that generates their long-lived afterglow emission. In this contribution we briefly introduce a mechanism for short gamma ray burst emission different from the usually assumed compact object binary merger progenitor model. It is based on the energy release in the central regions of neutron stars. This energy injection may be due to internal self-annihilation of dark matter gravitationally accreted from the galactic halo. We explain how this effect may trigger its full or partial conversion into a quark star and, in such a case, induce a gamma ray burst with isotropic equivalent energies in agreement with those measured experimentally. We perform a detailed study on the dynamics of a relativistic blast wave with the presence of a long-lived reverse shock (RS). Although a short-lived RS has been widely considered, the RS is believed to be long-lived as a consequence of a stratification expected on the ejecta Lorentz factors. The existence of a long-lived RS makes the forward shock (FS) dynamics to deviate from a self-similar Blandford-McKee solution. Employing the "mechanical model" that correctly incorporates the energy conservation, we present an accurate solution for both the FS and RS dynamics. We conduct a sophisticated calculation of the afterglow emission. Adopting a Lagrangian description of the blast wave, we keep track of an adiabatic evolution of numerous shells between the FS and RS. An evolution of the electron spectrum is also followed individually for every shell. We then find the FS and RS light curves by integrating over the entire FS and RS shocked regions, respectively. In particular, we make use of an analytic expression for observed spectral flux, which we derive here in terms of an observed frequency and observer time. Exploring a total of 20 different ejecta stratifications, we explain in detail how a stratified ejecta affects its blast wave dynamics and afterglow light curves. We show that, while the FS light curves are not sensitive to the ejecta stratifications, the RS light curves exhibit much richer features, including steep declines, plateaus, bumps, re-brightenings, and a variety of temporal decay indices. These distinctive RS features may be observable if the RS has higher values of the micophysics parameters than the FS. Observations of GRB 100724B with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) find that the spectrum is dominated by the typical Band functional form, which is usually taken to represent a non-thermal emission component, but also includes a statistically highly significant thermal spectral contribution. The simultaneous observation of the thermal and non-thermal components allows us to confidently identify the two emission components. The fact that these seem to vary independently favors the idea that the thermal component is of photospheric origin while the dominant non-thermal emission occurs at larger radii. Our results imply either a very high efficiency for the non-thermal process, or a very small size of the region at the base of the flow, both quite challenging for the standard fireball model. From July 2008 to October 2009, the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST) has detected 320 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). About 20% of these events are classified as short based on their T90 duration below 2 s. We present here for the first time time-resolved spectroscopy at timescales as short as 2 ms for the three brightest short GRBs observed with GBM. The time-integrated spectra of the events deviate from the Band function, indicating the existence of an additional spectral component, which can be fit by a power-law with index ~-1.5. The time-integrated Epeak values exceed 2 MeV for two of the bursts, and are well above the values observed in the brightest long GRBs. Their Epeak values and their low-energy power-law indices ({\alpha}) confirm that short GRBs are harder than long ones. We find that short GRBs are very similar to long ones, but with light curves contracted in time and with harder spectra stretched towards higher energies. In our time-resolved spectroscopy analysis, we find that the Epeak values range from a few tens of keV up to more than 6 MeV. In general, the hardness evolutions during the bursts follows their flux/intensity variations, similar to long bursts. However, we do not always see the Epeak leading the light-curve rises, and we confirm the zero/short average light-curve spectral lag below 1 MeV, already established for short GRBs. We also find that the time-resolved low-energy power-law indices of the Band function mostly violate the limits imposed by the synchrotron models for both slow and fast electron cooling and may require additional emission processes to explain the data. The paucity of reliable achromatic breaks in Gamma-Ray Burst afterglow light curves motivates independent measurements of the jet aperture. Serendipitous searches of afterglows, especially at radio wavelengths, have long been the classic alternative. These survey data have been interpreted assuming a uniformly emitting jet with sharp edges (``top-hat'' jet), in which case the ratio of weakly relativistically beamed afterglows to GRBs scales with the jet solid angle. In this paper, we consider, instead, a very wide outflow with a luminosity that decreases across the emitting surface. In particular, we adopt the universal structured jet (USJ) model, that is an alternative to the top-hat model for the structure of the jet. However, the interpretation of the survey data is very different: in the USJ model we only observe the emission within the jet aperture and the observed ratio of prompt emission rate to afterglow rate should solely depend on selection effects. We compute the number and rate of afterglows expected in all-sky snapshot observations as a function of the survey sensitivity. We find that the current (negative) results for OA searches are in agreement with our expectations. In radio and X-ray bands this was mainly due to the low sensitivity of the surveys, while in the optical band the sky-coverage was not sufficient. In general we find that X-ray surveys are poor tools for OA searches, if the jet is structured. On the other hand, the FIRST radio survey and future instruments like the Allen Telescope Array (in the radio band) and especially GAIA, Pan-Starrs and LSST (in the optical band) will have chances to detect afterglows., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. We propose to explain the recent observations of GRB early X-ray afterglows with SWIFT by the dissipation of energy in the reverse shock which crosses the ejecta as it is decelerated by the burst environment. We compute the evolution of the dissipated power and discuss the possibility that a fraction of it can be radiated in the X-ray range. We show that this reverse shock contribution behaves in a way very similar to the observed X-ray afterglows if the following two conditions are satisfied: (i) the Lorentz factor of the material which is ejected during the late stages of source activity decreases to small values Gamma < 10 and (ii) a large part of the shock dissipated energy is transferred to a small fraction (zeta < 0.1) of the electron population. We consider the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by an early generation of Population III stars coupled with a normal mode of star formation at lower redshift. The computation is performed in the framework of hierarchical structure formation and is based on cosmic star formation histories constrained to reproduce the observed star formation rate at redshift $z \la 6$, the observed chemical abundances in damped Lyman alpha absorbers and in the intergalactic medium, and to allow for an early reionization of the Universe at $z\sim 10-20$ as indicated by the first year results released by WMAP. We find that the normal mode of star formation produces a gravitational wave background which peaks at 300-500 Hz and is within LIGO III sensitivity. The Population III component peaks at lower frequencies (30-100 Hz depending on the model), and could be detected by LIGO III as well as the planned BBO and DECIGO interferometers., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Evidence from the WMAP polarization data indicates that the Universe may have been reionized at very high redshift. It is often suggested that the ionizing UV flux originates from an early population of massive or very massive stars. Depending on their mass, such stars can explode either as type II supernovae or pair-instability supernovae, or may entirely collapse into a black hole. The resulting neutrino emission can be quite different in each case. We consider here the relic neutrino background produced by an early burst of Population III stars coupled with a normal mode of star formation at lower redshift. The computation is performed in the framework of hierarchical structure formation and is based on cosmic star formation histories constrained to reproduce the observed star formation rate at redshift z \la 6, the observed chemical abundances in damped Lyman alpha absorbers and in the intergalactic medium, and to allow for an early reionization of the Universe at z \sim 10-20. We find that although the high redshift burst of Population III stars does lead to an appreciable flux of neutrinos at relatively low energy (E_\nu \approx 1 MeV), the observable neutrino flux is dominated by the normal mode of star formation. We also find that predicted fluxes are at the present level of the SuperK limit. As a consequence, the supernova relic neutrino background has a direct impact on models of chemical evolution and/or supernova dynamics., Comment: 22 pages, 13 eps figures

The cosmic star formation histories are evaluated for different minimum masses of the initial halo structures, with allowance for realistic gas outflows. With a minimum halo mass of 10^{7} - 10^{8} M_odot and a moderate outflow efficiency, we reproduce both the current baryon fraction and the early chemical enrichment of the IGM. The intensity of the formation rate of ``normal'' stars is also well constrained by the observations: it has to be dominated by star formation in elliptical galaxies, except perhaps at very low redshift. The fraction of baryons in stars is predicted as are also the type Ia and II supernova event rates. Comparison with SN observations in the redshift range z=0-2 allows us to set strong constraints on the time delay of type Ia supernovae (a total delay of \sim 4 Gyr is required to fit the data), the lower end of the mass range of the progenitors (2 - 8 M_odot) and the fraction of white dwarfs that reproduce the type Ia supernova (about 1 per cent). The intensity in the initial starburst of zero metallicity stars below 270 M_\odot must be limited in order to avoid premature overenrichment of the IGM. Only about 10 - 20 % of the metals present in the IGM at z = 0 have been produced by population III stars at very high z. The remaining 80 - 90 % are ejected later by galaxies forming normal stars, with a maximum outflow efficiency occurring at a redshift of about 5. We conclude that 10^{-3} of the mass in baryons must lie in first massive stars in order to produce enough ionizing photons to allow early reionization of the IGM by z \sim 15., Comment: 51 pages, 23 eps figures

Motivated by the WMAP results indicating an early epoch of reionization, we consider alternative cosmic star formation models which are capable of reionizing the early intergalactic medium. We develop models which include an early burst of massive stars (with several possible mass ranges) combined with standard star formation. We compute the stellar ionizing flux of photons and we track the nucleosynthetic yields for several elements: D, He4, C, N, O, Si, S, Fe, Zn. We compute the subsequent chemical evolution as a function of redshift, both in the intergalactic medium and in the interstellar medium of forming galaxies, starting with the primordial objects which are responsible for the reionization. We apply constraints from the observed abundances in the Lyman alpha forest and in Damped Lyman alpha clouds in conjunction with the ability of the models to produce the required degree of reionization. We also consider possible constraints associated with the observations of the two extremely metal-poor stars HE 0107-5240 and CS22949-037. We confirm that an early top-heavy stellar component is required, as a standard star formation model is unable to reionize the early Universe and reproduce the abundances of the very metal-poor halo stars. A bimodal (or top-heavy) IMF (40 - 100 M_\odot) is our preferred scenario compared to the extreme mass range (\ga 100 M_\odot) often assumed to be responsible for the early stages of reionization. A mode of even more extreme stellar masses in the range (\ge 270 M_\odot) has also been considered. All massive stars in this mode collapse entirely into black holes, and as a consequence, chemical evolution and reionization are de-correlated. We present results from a comprehensive number of relativistic, time-dependent, axisymmetric simulations of the runaway instability of non-constant angular momentum thick discs around black holes. This second paper extends earlier results where only constant angular momentum discs were considered. All relevant aspects of the theory of stationary thick discs around rotating black holes, necessary to build the initial state in our simulations, are presented in great detail. The angular momentum of the discs is assumed to increase outwards with the radial distance according to a power law. The main simplifying assumptions of our approach are not to include magnetic fields and self-gravity in the discs. Furthermore, the dynamics of the spacetime is accounted for by computing the transfer of mass and angular momentum from the disc to the black hole through the event horizon : the evolution of the central black hole is assumed to follow a sequence of Kerr black holes of increasing mass and spin. In agreement with previous results based on stationary models we find that by allowing the mass and the spin of the black hole to grow, constant angular momentum discs rapidly become unstable on a dynamical timescale. The comparison with the results of paper I shows that the effect of the angular momentum transfer from the torus to the black hole is to make constant angular momentum discs less unstable, increasing the timescale of the instability. However, we find that non-constant angular momentum discs are dramatically stabilized for very small values of the angular momentum slope. We have developed a toy model for internal shocks which has been used to generate a large number of synthetic GRBs in order to find in the parameter space the conditions which can lead to the formation of X-ray flashes. We present a simple, semi-analytical model to explain GRB temporal and spectral properties in the context of the internal shock model. Each individual pulse in the temporal profiles is produced by the deceleration of fast moving material by a comparatively slower layer within a relativistic wind. The spectral evolution of synthetic pulses is first obtained with standard equipartition assumptions to estimate the post-shock magnetic field and electron Lorentz factor. We get Ep propto t^-delta with delta=7/2 which is much steeper than the observed slopes delta(obs) <= 1.5. We therefore consider the possibility that the equipartition parameters depend on the shock strength and post-shock density. We then get a much better agreement with the observations and our synthetic pulses satisfy both the hardness-intensity and hardness-fluence correlations. We also compute time lags between profiles in different energy channels and we find that they decrease with increasing hardness. We finally compare our predicted time lag - luminosity relation to the Norris et al. (2000) result obtained from 6 bursts with known redshift., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Such "internal shocks" can occur if the wind is generated with a highly non uniform distribution of the Lorentz factor Gamma. Taking into account such a variable distribution of Gamma, we estimate the expected thermal emission of the relativistic wind when it becomes transparent. We compare this emission (temporal profile + spectrum) to the emission produced by the internal shocks. In most cases we predict a rather bright thermal emission that could easily be detected. This favors acceleration mechanisms for the wind where the main energy reservoir is under magnetic rather than thermal form. Heise et al. (2001) have reported the identification of a new class of sources by Beppo-SAX, the so-called X-ray flashes (XRFs), which have many common properties with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) but are not detected in the gamma-ray range. Discerning the likelihood of the so-called runaway instability of thick accretion disks orbiting black holes is an important issue for most models of cosmic gamma-ray bursts. To this aim we investigate this phenomenon by means of time-dependent, hydrodynamical simulations of black hole plus torus systems in general relativity. The evolution of the central black hole is assumed to be that of a sequence of Kerr black holes of increasing mass and spin, whose growth rate is controlled by the transfer of mass and angular momentum from the material of the disk spiralling in through the event horizon of the black hole. The self-gravity of the disk is neglected. We find that when the black hole mass and spin are allowed to increase, constant angular momentum disks undergo a runaway instability on a dynamical timescale (a few orbital periods). However, our simulations show that a slight increase of the specific angular momentum of the disk outwards has a dramatic stabilizing effect. Our results, obtained in the framework of general relativity, are in broad agreement with earlier studies based both on stationary models and on time-dependent simulations with Newtonian and pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potentials., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present results from a numerical study of the runaway instability of thick discs around black holes. This instability is an important issue for most models of cosmic gamma-ray bursts, where the central engine responsible for the initial energy release is such a system consisting of a thick disc surrounding a black hole. We have carried out a comprehensive number of time-dependent simulations aimed at exploring the appearance of the instability. Our study has been performed using a fully relativistic hydrodynamics code. The general relativistic hydrodynamic equations are formulated as a hyperbolic flux-conservative system and solved using a suitable Godunov-type scheme. We build a series of constant angular momentum discs around a Schwarzschild black hole. Furthermore, the self-gravity of the disc is neglected and the evolution of the central black hole is assumed to be that of a sequence of exact Schwarzschild black holes of varying mass. The black hole mass increase is thus determined by the mass accretion rate across the event horizon. In agreement with previous studies based on stationary models, we find that by allowing the mass of the black hole to grow the disc becomes unstable. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that for all disc-to-hole mass ratios considered (between 1 and 0.05), the runaway instability appears very fast on a dynamical timescale of a few orbital periods, typically a few 10 ms and never exceeding 1 s for our particular choice of the mass of the black hole ($2.5 \mathrm{M_\odot}$) and a large range of mass fluxes ($\dot{m} \ga 10^{-3} \mathrm{M_{\odot}/s}$). Most models for the central engine of gamma-ray bursts involve a stellar mass black hole surrounded by a thick disk formed after the merging of a system of compact objects or the collapse of a massive star. Energy released from the accretion of disk material by the black hole or from the rotation of the hole itself extracted by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism powers a relativistic wind along the system axis. Lorentz factors of several hundreds are needed to solve the compactness problem in the wind which implies the injection of a tremendous power into a very small amount of matter. The Blandford-Znajek mechanism, where the outflow follows magnetic field lines anchored to the black hole is probably the best way to prevent baryonic pollution and can even initially produce a purely leptonic wind. In this paper we rather study the wind emitted from the inner part of the disk where the risk of baryonic pollution is much larger since the outflow originates from high density regions. We show that the baryonic load of this wind sensitively depends on the disk temperature and magnetic field geometry and that the outflow can become ultra-relativistic (Lorentz factor Gamma>100) under quite restrictive conditions only. Conversely, if Gamma remains of the order of unity the dense wind emitted from the inner disk could help to confine the central jet but may also represent a source of baryon contamination for the Blandford-Znajek mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to be published in A&A

We investigate a possible nucleosynthetic signature of highly energetic explosions of C-O cores ("hypernovae," HNe) which might be associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We note that the direct impact of C- and O-enriched hypernova ejecta on the ambient hydrogen and helium leads to spallation reactions which can produce large amounts of the light nuclides lithium, beryllium, and boron (LiBeB). Using analytic velocity spectra of the hypernova ejecta, we calculate the LiBeB yields of different exploding C-O cores associated with observed hypernovae. The deduced yields are $\sim 10^3$ times higher than those produced by similar (direct) means in normal Type II supernovae, and are higher than the commonly used ones arising from shock wave acceleration induced by Type II supernova (SN) explosions. To avoid overproduction of these elements in our Galaxy, hypernovae should be rare events, with $\la 10^{-3}$ hypernovae per supernova, assuming a constant HN/SN ratio over time. This rate is in good agreement with that of long duration GRBs if we assume that the gamma-ray emission is focussed with a beaming factor $\Omega/4\pi \la 10^{-2}$. This encouraging result supports the possible HN-GRB association. Thus, Galactic LiBeB abundance measurements offer a promising way to probe the HN rate history and the possible HN-GRB correlation. On the other hand, if hypernovae are associated to very massive pregalactic stars (Population III) they would produce a LiBeB pre-enrichment in proto-galactic gas, which could show up as a plateau in the lowest metallicities of the Be-Fe relation in halo stars., Comment: 12 pages, AASTeX, no figures

The source of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (hereafter GRBs) is usually believed to be a stellar mass black hole accreting material from a thick disk. The mechanism for the production of a relativistic wind by such a system is still unknown. We investigate here one of the proposal where the disk energy is extracted by a magnetic field amplified to very large values B \sim 10^15 G. Using some very simple assumptions we compute the mass loss rate along magnetic field lines and then estimate the Lorentz factor \Gamma at infinity. We find that \Gamma can reach high values only if severe constraints on the field geometry and the conditions of energy injection are satisfied.
