- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Este processo tem sido detectado em diferentes ecossistemas e diversos grupos de organismos, em especial para peixes de água doce. Entretanto, sua dinâmica permanece pouco esclarecida, principalmente quanto às escalas espaciais e temporais utilizadas e os mecanismos determinantes: introdução de espécies não-nativas, extinção de espécies nativas e modificações ambientais. Nesse sentido, dada à importância desse processo, faz-se necessária a síntese dos dados quantitativos de diferentes estudos, com o objetivo de encontrar generalizações, identificar as lacunas e direcionar estudos futuros. Sendo assim, foi utilizada a abordagem cienciométrica e o método de hierarquização-de-hipóteses, através do qual o processo de homogeneização biótica foi dividido em sub-hipóteses mais específicas. As regiões zoogeográficas Neártica e Paleártica apresentaram o maior número de artigos publicados relacionados ao processo de homogeneização biótica em peixes de água doce. Houve um maior número de artigos publicados avaliando o processo de homogeneização em rios, lagos e reservatórios, enfatizando que especial atenção deve ser destinada à riachos. A maioria das sub-hipóteses apresentaram observações suportando a homogeneização biótica. Quanto às formas de homogeneização, a maior parte das observações foi para a homogeneização taxonômica, sendo esta suportada em amplas escalas espaciais e temporais. Além disso, ficou evidente a escassez de estudos avaliando a dinâmica do processo em escalas temporais e espaciais mais refinadas. Adicionalmente, buscando avaliar a dinâmica do processo em reservatórios Neotropicais, a quantificação da homogeneização biótica em diferentes escalas temporais e espaciais mostrou que, na escala interbacias ocorreu homogeneização biótica devido, principalmente, à introdução e estabelecimento das mesmas espécies não-nativas na maioira dos reservatórios (i.e. espécies com alta pressão de propágulos como tilápias). Enquanto em escala intrabacias foi detectada diferenciação biótica, devido ao estabelecimento de diferentes espécies não-nativas em cada reservatório e a extirpação de espécies nativas. Por fim, devido a falta de estudos quantificando a dinâmica da homogeneização funcional na região Neotropical, a qual possui a maior diversidade funcional para peixes de água doce, buscou-se um melhor detalhamento e distinção dos principais aspectos desse processo em reservatórios. Para tal, a dinâmica das mudanças na composição de espécies e atributos funcionais foi avaliada, considerando diferentes escalas temporais e espaciais. Na escala inter-ecoregiões, devido à introdução de espécies não-nativas com traços funcionais similares, e a perda de espécies nativas exibindo tanto traços similares como distintos, foi detectado o aumento da similaridade taxonômica (homogeneização taxonômica), enquanto ocorreu a diferenciação functional no primeiro período e, no último período a homogeneização funcional. Para a escala intra-ecoregião, para a maioria das ecoregiões avaliadas, foi detectada diferenciação taxonômica e functional, devido a introdução de diferentes espécies não-nativas, possuindo traços funcionais distintos. No entanto, nesta escala, para a ecoregião do Iguaçu, foi detectada diferenciação taxonômica enquanto houve homogeneização funcional, devido à extirpação de espécies nativas com traços funcionais distintos e, à introdução de diferentes espécies não-nativas funcionalmente redundantes. Abstract: Biotic homogenization is defined as the increase in the taxonomic, functional or genetic similarity, between two or more biotas over time. This process has been detected in different ecosystems and several taxonomic groups, especially for freshwater fish. However, its dynamics remain unclear, mainly regarding the spatial and temporal scales used and the determining mechanisms: introduction of non-native species, extinction of native species and environmental modifications. In this sense, given the importance of this process, it is necessary to synthesize quantitative data from different studies, with the aim of find generalizations, identify gaps and conduct future studies. Thus, was used the scientometric approach and the hypothesis-hierarchical method, through which the biotic homogenization process was divided into more specific sub-hypotheses. The zoogeographic regions Nearctic and Palearctic presented the largest number of published articles related to the process of biotic homogenization in freshwater fish. There was a greater number of published articles evaluating the homogenization process in rivers, lakes and reservoirs, emphasizing that special attention should be directed to streams. Most of the sub-hypotheses presented observations supporting the biotic homogenization. Related to the forms of homogenization, most of the observations were to the taxonomic homogenization, which was supported in wide spatial and temporal scales. In addition, it was evident the scarcity of studies evaluating the dynamics of the process in more refined temporal and spatial scales. Additionally, in order to evaluate the dynamics of the process in Neotropical reservoirs, the quantification of biotic homogenization at different temporal and spatial scales showed that biotic homogenization occurred at the interbasin scale, mainly due to the introduction and establishment of the same non-native species in most reservoirs (i.e. species with high propagule pressure such as tilapia). Whereas at intrabasin scale the biotic differentiation was detected due to the establishment of different non-native species in each reservoir and the extirpation of native species. Finally, due to the lack of studies quantifying the dynamics of the functional homogenization in the Neotropical region, which possess the greatest functional diversity for freshwater fish, it was sought a better detailing and distinction of the main aspects of this process in reservoirs. For this, the dynamics of the changes in the species composition and functional attributes was evaluated, considering different temporal and spatial scales. In the inter-ecoregions scale, due to the introduction of non-native species with similar functional traits, and the loss of native species exhibiting each similar and distinct traits, the increase in the taxonomic similarity (taxonomic homogenization) was detected, whereas the functional differentiation occurred in the first period and, in the last period the functional homogenization. To the intra-ecoregion scale, for most ecoregions evaluated, the taxonomic and functional differentiation may be detected, due to introduction of different non-native species, with different functional traits. However, at this scale, to the Iguaçu ecoregion, taxonomic differentiation was detected while functional homogenization occurred, due to the extirpation of native species with distinct functional traits and, the introduction of different non-native species, which were functionally redundant. Samples were collected from January 2004 to December 2008, with periodicity quarterly in reservoirs Foz do Areia, Segredo and Salto Caxias, while in reservoirs Salto Santiago and Salto Osório samples were bimonthly. Catches were made with the aid of gillnets (mesh size of 2.4 to 16 cm) and trammel nets (witches, 6, 7 and 8 cm between non-adjacent), operated on the surface, margin and bottom, exposed for 24 hours with checked at 8:00, 16:00 and 22:00 hours. Fish caught were identified, measured and weighed. The community structure was evaluated by its attributes of species (richness), abundance (biomass and number of individuals) and diversity index of Shannon. The environmental variables were plotted on a matrix (physics and chemistry) and is summarized by principal component analysis (PCA). To summarize the data on the composition and structure of the assemblages of native and nonnative fish, analysis of non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) was used. The degree of association between multivariate matrices (environmental variables and the composition and structure of the assemblages of native fish and non-native) was assessed by means of a Procrustes routine. During the study period were collected from 152,007 specimens, 148,084 individuals of native species and 3,923 specimens of non-native species, which were divided into six orders, 16 families, 32 genera and 50 species. The most abundant native species were Astyanax sp. B (40.1%), Astyanax sp. C (19.1%) and Pimelodus britskii (9.1%). The non-native species were more abundant Odontesthes bonariensis (85.1%), Prochilodus lineatus (7.5%) and Tilapia rendalli (4.9%). The distribution of abundance in numbers and weight was higher in Salto Santiago, both native and non native. Spatial and temporal differences were apparent for wealth, for both native and non native, but the Shannon diversity index showed significant differences only for native species. The composition and structure of the assembly of native and nonnative fish showed significant differences along the longitudinal gradient of the Iguaçu River. The physical and chemical variables (water temperature, water transparency, pH and electrical conductivity) were significant for the separation of the reservoirs along the longitudinal gradient. Procrustes analysis showed that an association exists between the physical and chemical variables, and the spatial arrangement of the composition and structure of the assemblages of native fish. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a composição e estrutura da assembleia de peixes nativos e não nativos, ao longo do gradiente espacial e temporal no rio Iguaçu e, suas relações com as variáveis ambientais em cinco reservatórios. As amostragens foram realizadas de janeiro de 2004 à dezembro de 2008, com periodicidade trimestral nos reservatórios de Foz do Areia, Segredo e Salto Caxias, enquanto que nos reservatórios de Salto Santiago e Salto Osório as amostragens foram bimestrais. As capturas foram realizadas com o auxílio de redes de espera simples (malhas de 2,4 a 16 cm) e tresmalhos (feiticeiras de 6, 7 e 8 cm entre nós não adjacentes), operadas na superfície, margem e fundo, expostas por 24 horas com revistas às 8:00, 16:00 e 22:00 horas. Os peixes capturados foram identificados, medidos e pesados. A estrutura da comunidade foi avaliada pelos seus atributos número de espécies (riqueza), abundância (biomassa e número de indivíduos) e índice de diversidade de Shannon. As variáveis ambientais foram plotadas em uma matriz (física e química), sendo essa sumarizada pela análise de componentes principais (PCA). Para sumarizar os dados de composição e estrutura da assembleia de peixes nativos e não nativos, a análise de escalonamento multidimensional não-métrico (NMDS) foi utilizada. O grau de associação entre as matrizes multivariadas (variáveis ambientais e composição e estrutura da assembleia de peixes nativos e não nativos) foi avaliado por meio de uma rotina Procrustes. Durante o período amostral foram coletados 152.007 exemplares, sendo 148.084 indivíduos de espécies nativas e 3.923 exemplares de espécies não nativas, que foram distribuídos em seis ordens, 16 famílias, 32 gêneros e 50 espécies. As espécies nativas mais abundantes foram Astyanax sp. B (40,1%), Astyanax sp. C (19,1%) e Pimelodus britskii (9,1%). As espécies não nativas mais abundantes foram Odontesthes bonariensis (85,1%), Prochilodus lineatus (7,5%) e Tilapia rendalli (4,9%). A distribuição de abundância, em número de indivíduos e peso foi maior em Salto Santiago, tanto para espécies nativas como não nativas. Diferenças espaciais e temporais significativas foram verificadas para a riqueza, tanto para espécies nativas como não nativas, entretanto o índice de diversidade de Shannon, mostrou diferenças significativas somente para as espécies nativas. A composição e estrutura da assembleia de peixes nativos e não nativos, apresentaram diferenças significativas ao longo do gradiente longitudinal do rio Iguaçu. As variáveis físicas e químicas (temperatura da água, transparência da água, pH e condutividade elétrica), foram significativas para a separação dos reservatórios ao longo do gradiente longitudinal. A análise de Procrustes mostrou que existe associação entre as variáveis físicas e químicas, e o arranjo espacial da composição e estrutura da assembleia de peixes nativos.

The introduced species that can establish themselves generally present life history characteristics different from the native biota and with this they can adapt easily in the altered environments. Environments modified with the formation of a reservoir generate appropriate conditions for the establishment of tolerant and opportunistic nonnative species. 2- Our study compared functional traits between native and non-native fish species in 20 reservoirs of three diferente Neotropical ecoregions in order to observe if the functional traits of the two sets of species are associated and influence the establishment of non- native. Our hypothesis was that the traits of native species significantly influence the establishment of non-native species, since the two sets of species present differences in their functional characteristics. 3- The co-inertia analysis simultaneously ordered the traits of the non-native species in relation to the native traits and the permutational test revealed that these ordinations were significantly associated (RV = 0.40, p = 0.008). This result demonstrates that the process of establishment of the non-native species is highly dependent on the characteristics of the species of the host communities. 4- According to the environmental characteristics, each reservoir presented distinct traits for the set of native and non-native species, so that the Iguaçu ecoregion was the one with the greatest functional differentiation among the species sets. 5- Therefore, our results demonstrated that the process of establishment of nonnative species is not random but highly dependent on the functional characteristics of the host assembly. The non-native species that can establish themselves are those that are successful in the competition with the native ones or by the opportunities observed when the natives do not exploit the same resources of the introduced ones. 1- A introdução de espécies não-nativas pode causar impactos no ambiente, bem como efeitos negativos na funcionalidade de um ecossistema. As espécies introduzidas que conseguem se estabelecer geralmente apresentam características de história de vida diferentes da biota nativa e conseguem se adaptar facilmente nos ambientes alterados. Ambientes modificados com a formação de um reservatório geram condições apropriadas para o estabelecimento de espécies não-nativas tolerantes e oportunistas. 2- Nosso estudo comparou os traços funcionais entre espécies de peixes nativas e não-nativas em 20 reservatórios de três diferentes ecorregiões Neotropicais, a fim de observar se os traços funcionais dos dois conjuntos de espécies estão associadas e se influenciam no estabelecimento das espécies não-nativas. Nossa hipótese foi que os traços das espécies nativas influenciam significativamente no estabelecimento das espécies não-nativas, pois os dois conjuntos de espécies apresentam diferenças em suas características funcionais. 3- A análise de co-inércia ordenou simultaneamente os traços das espécies nãonativas em relação aos traços das nativas e o teste permutacional revelou que estas ordenações foram significativamente associadas (RV = 0,40; p = 0,008). Esse resultado demonstra que o processo de estabelecimento das espécies nãonativas é altamente dependente das características das espécies das comunidades receptoras. 4- De acordo com as características ambientais, cada reservatório apresentou traços distintos para o conjunto de espécies nativas e não-nativas, de forma que a ecorregião do Iguaçu foi a que apresentou maior diferenciação funcional entre os conjuntos de espécies. 5- Portanto, nossos resultados demonstraram que o processo de estabelecimento das espécies não-nativas não é aleatório, mas sim altamente dependente das características funcionais da assembleia receptora. As espécies não-nativas que conseguem se estabelecer são as que apresentam sucesso na competição com as nativas ou pelas oportunidades observadas quando às nativas não exploram os mesmos recursos das introduzidas.

- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.
