Endowing the set of functional graphs (FGs) with the sum (disjoint union of graphs) and product (standard direct product on graphs) operations induces on FGs a structure of a commutative semiring R. The operations on R can be naturally extended to the set of univariate polynomials R[X] over R. This paper provides an algorithmic pipeline for studying the intrinsic structure of a finite discrete dynamical system (DDS) modelling an evolving phenomenon. Here, by intrinsic structure we mean, regarding the dynamics of the DDS under observation, the feature of resulting from the "cooperation" of the dynamics of two or more smaller DDS. The intrinsic structure is described by an equation over DDS which represents a hypothesis over the phenomenon under observation. The pipeline allows solving such an equation, i.e., validating the hypothesis over the phenomenon, as far the asymptotic behavior and the number of states of the DDS under observation are concerned. The results are about the soundness and completeness of the pipeline and they are obtained by exploiting the algebraic setting for DDS introduced in [10]., Comment: Accepted for publication by Journal of Computational Science

We investigate the computational complexity of deciding whether a given univariate integer polynomial p(x) has a factor q(x) satisfying specific additional constraints. When the only constraint imposed on q(x) is to have a degree smaller than the degree of p(x) and greater than zero, the problem is equivalent to testing the irreducibility of p(x) and then it is solvable in polynomial time. We prove that deciding whether a given monic univariate integer polynomial has factors satisfying additional properties may lead to NP-complete problems in the strong sense. In particular, given any constant value k in Z, we prove that it is NP-complete in the strong sense to detect the existence of a factor that returns a prescribed value when evaluated at x=k or to detect the existence of a pair of factors - whose product is equal to the original polynomial - that return the same value when evaluated at x=k.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a finite commutative ring, and let $\mathbb{L}$ be a commutative $\mathbb{K}$-algebra. Let $A$ and $B$ be two $n \times n$-matrices over $\mathbb{L}$ that have the same characteristic polynomial. The main result of this paper states that the set $\left\{ A^0,A^1,A^2,\ldots\right\}$ is finite if and only if the set $\left\{ B^0,B^1,B^2,\ldots\right\}$ is finite. We apply this result to Cellular Automata (CA). Indeed, it gives a complete and easy-to-check characterization of sensitivity to initial conditions and equicontinuity for linear CA over the alphabet $\mathbb{K}^n$ for $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ i.e., CA in which the local rule is defined by $n\times n$-matrices with elements in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. To prove our main result, we derive an integrality criterion for matrices that is likely of independent interest. Namely, let $\mathbb{K}$ be any commutative ring (not necessarily finite), and let $\mathbb{L}$ be a commutative $\mathbb{K}$-algebra. Consider any $n \times n$-matrix $A$ over $\mathbb{L}$. Then, $A \in \mathbb{L}^{n \times n}$ is integral over $\mathbb{K}$ (that is, there exists a monic polynomial $f \in \mathbb{K}\left[t\right]$ satisfying $f\left(A\right) = 0$) if and only if all coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of $A$ are integral over $\mathbb{K}$. The proof of this fact relies on a strategic use of exterior powers (a trick pioneered by Gert Almkvist). Furthermore, we extend the decidability result concerning sensitivity and equicontinuity to the wider class of additive CA over a finite abelian group. Boolean automata networks, genetic regulation networks, and metabolic networks are just a few examples of biological modelling by discrete dynamical systems (DDS). A major issue in modelling is the verification of the model against the experimental data or inducing the model under uncertainties in the data. Equipping finite discrete dynamical systems with an algebraic structure of commutative semiring provides a suitable context for hypothesis verification on the dynamics of DDS. Indeed, hypothesis on the systems can be translated into polynomial equations over DDS. Solutions to these equations provide the validation to the initial hypothesis. Unfortunately, finding solutions to general equations over DDS is undecidable. In this article, we want to push the envelope further by proposing a practical approach for some decidable cases in a suitable configuration that we call the Hypothesis Checking. We demonstrate that for many decidable equations all boils down to a "simpler" equation. However, the problem is not to decide if the simple equation has a solution, but to enumerate all the solutions in order to verify the hypothesis on the real and undecidable systems. Reaction systems are discrete dynamical systems inspired by bio-chemical processes, whose dynamical behaviour is expressed by set-theoretic operations on finite sets. Reaction systems thus provide a description of bio-chemical phenomena that complements the more traditional approaches, for instance those based on differential equations. A comprehensive list of decision problems about the dynamical behavior of reaction systems (such as cycles and fixed/periodic points, attractors, and reachability) is provided along with the corresponding computational complexity, which ranges from tractable problems to PSPACE-complete problems., Comment: Preprint

Higher-order cellular automata (HOCA) are a variant of cellular automata (CA) used in many applications (ranging, for instance, from the design of secret sharing schemes to data compression and image processing), and in which the global state of the system at time $t$ depends not only on the state at time $t-1$, as in the original model, but also on the states at time $t-2, \ldots, t-n$, where $n$ is the memory size of the HOCA. We provide decidable characterizations of two important dynamical properties, namely, sensitivity to the initial conditions and equicontinuity, for linear HOCA over the alphabet $\mathbb{Z}_m$. Such characterizations extend the ones shown in [23] for linear CA (LCA) over the alphabet $\mathbb{Z}^{n}_m$ in the case $n=1$. We also prove that linear HOCA of size memory $n$ over $\mathbb{Z}_m$ form a class that is indistinguishable from a specific subclass of LCA over $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$. This enables to decide injectivity and surjectivity for linear HOCA of size memory $n$ over $\mathbb{Z}_m$ using the decidable characterization provided in [2] and [19] for injectivity and surjectivity of LCA over $\mathbb{Z}^n_m$. We continue the study of asynchrony immunity in cellular automata (CA), which can be considered as a weaker version of correlation immunity in the context of vectorial Boolean functions. The property could have applications as a countermeasure for side-channel attacks in CA-based cryptographic primitives, such as S-boxes and pseudorandom number generators. We first give some theoretical results on the necessary conditions that a CA rule must satisfy in order to meet asynchrony immunity, the most important one being center permutivity. Next, we perform an exhaustive search of all asynchrony immune CA rules of neighborhood size up to $5$, leveraging on the discovered theoretical properties to greatly reduce the size of the search space., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, extended version of the paper "Asynchrony Immune Cellular Automata" by L. This paper investigates acceptance conditions for finite automata recognizing omega-regular languages. As a first result, we show that, under any acceptance condition that can be defined in the MSO logic, a finite automaton can recognize at most omega-regular languages. Starting from this, the paper aims at classifying acceptance conditions according to their expressive power and at finding the exact position of the classes of omega-languages they induced according to the Borel hierarchy. A new interesting acceptance condition is introduced and fully characterized. A step forward is also made in the understanding of the expressive power of (fin, =).

We study the set of strictly periodic points in surjective cellular automata, i.e., the set of those configurations which are temporally periodic for a given automaton but they not spatially periodic. This set turns out to be dense for almost equicontinuous surjective cellular automata while it is empty for the positively expansive ones. In the class of additive cellular automata, the set of strictly periodic points can be either dense or empty. In this paper we study $\nu$-CA on one-dimensional lattice defined over a finite set of local rules. The main goal is to determine how the local rules can be mixed to ensure the produced $\nu$-CA has some properties. In a first part, we give some background for the study of $\nu$-CA. Then surjectivity and injectivity are studied using a variant of DeBruijn graphs. The next part is dedicated to the number-conserving property.

The dynamical behavior of non-uniform cellular automata is compared with the one of classical cellular automata. Several differences and similarities are pointed out by a series of examples. Decidability of basic properties like surjectivity and injectivity is also established. This work studies some aspects of the computational power of fully asynchronous cellular automata (ACA). We deal with some notions of simulation between ACA and Turing Machines. In particular, we characterize the updating sequences specifying which are "universal", i.e., allowing a (specific family of) ACA to simulate any TM on any input. We also consider the computational cost of such simulations.

In this paper we introduce the notion of quasi-expansivity for 2D CA and we show that it shares many properties with expansivity (that holds only for 1D CA). Similarly, we introduce the notions of quasi-sensitivity and prove that the classical dichotomy theorem holds in this new setting. Moreover, we show a tight relation between closingness and openness for 2D CA. In this paper, we exhibit a strong relation between the sand automata configuration space and the cellular automata configuration space. This relation induces a compact topology for sand automata, and a new context in which sand automata are homeomorphic to cellular automata acting on a specific subshift. We show that the existing topological results for sand automata, including the Hedlund-like representation theorem, still hold. In this context, we give a characterization of the cellular automata which are sand automata, and study some dynamical behaviors such as equicontinuity. Furthermore, we deal with the nilpotency. We show that the classical definition is not meaningful for sand automata. Then, we introduce a suitable new notion of nilpotency for sand automata. Finally, we prove that this simple dynamical behavior is undecidable.
