Abstract

Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) is a species of limited distribution, with three native populations in California. In 1986, a disease known as pitch canker, caused by the fungus Fusarium circinatum, was identified as the cause of extensive mortality in planted Monterey pines in Santa Cruz County. Monitoring studies on the Monterey Peninsula documented rapid progression of the disease in the native forest during the 1990s, with most trees sustaining some level of infection. However, between 1999 and 2013, the severity of pitch canker stabilized, with many previously diseased trees then free of symptoms, and plots monitored between 2011 and 2015 documented a steady decline in the occurrence of new infections. Consequently, whereas pitch canker was once a conspicuous visual blight in the forest, by the end of the observation period, symptomatic trees had become a rarity. The arrested development of pitch canker is suggestive of a reduction in the frequency and duration of fog near the coast, which provides conditions necessary for the pathogen to establish infections.

Abstract

Hector is an open-source reduced-complexity climate–carbon cycle model that models critical Earth system processes on a global and annual basis. Here, we present an updated version of the model, Hector V3.2.0 (hereafter Hector V3), and document its new features, implementation of new science, and performance. Significant new features include permafrost thaw, a reworked energy balance submodel, and updated parameterizations throughout. Hector V3 results are in good general agreement with historical observations of atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global mean surface temperature, and the future temperature projections from Hector V3 are consistent with more complex Earth system model output data from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. We show that Hector V3 is a flexible, performant, robust, and fully open-source simulator of global climate changes. We also note its limitations and discuss future areas for improvement and research with respect to the model's scientific, stakeholder, and educational priorities.

Abstract

Native Monterey pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) forests are currently found at three disjunct locations in coastal California and on two islands off the coast of Mexico. The mainland forests comprise, in total, approximately 4,500 ha (11), whereas the two island populations are limited to 150 ha on Cedros Island and fewer than 400 trees on Guadalupe Island (28). Collectively, these populations are significant ecological and recreational resources, but they are also a valuable repository of useful genetic traits for improved varieties of Monterey pine, which are widely used by the timber industry. In California, Monterey pine is important as a landscape tree, with an estimated 50 million standing trees as of 1985. Monterey pines were especially popular for plantings on freeway rights-of-way, where they served as visual and sound barriers for the adjacent properties. It was among such trees that a dieback problem became apparent in Santa Cruz County (Fig. 1) during the mid-1980s. In 1986, A. H. McCain, extension plant pathologist at University of California Berkeley, established that the affected trees were suffering from pitch canker (30), caused by Fusarium circinatum Nirenberg & O’Donnell (=Fusarium subglutinans (Wollenweb. & Reinking) Nelson, Toussoun, & Marasas f. sp. pini). Subsequent surveys showed the disease to be widespread in coastal Santa Cruz County, with a clearly disjunct infestation being found farther inland, in Alameda County (Fig. 1). Curiously, the disease was also found in Christmas tree farms in Los Angeles and San Diego counties, more than 450 km to the southeast (8).

4. Relationship between field resistance to Phytophthora ramorum and constitutive phenolic chemistry of coast live oak

Abstract

Sudden oak death, caused by Phytophthora ramorum, has resulted in high levels of coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia Nee (CLO) mortality. However, some CLO survive in areas with high disease pressure and may thus be resistant. We tested the hypothesis that such field resistant trees contain constitutively higher levels of phenolics than susceptible trees. Phloem was sampled from the trunks of two groups of trees (one previously inoculated, one naturally infected with P. ramorum) categorized over the course of several years as putatively resistant (PR, no symptoms), in remission (IR, showed symptoms but then recovered), and symptomatic (S). Individual and total soluble phenolics from these trees were quantified. There were no significant differences in individual or total soluble phenolics between groups of naturally infected trees. However, inoculated PR and IR trees were characterized by higher constitutive levels of total phenolics, as well as ellagic acid and tyrosol hexoside pentoside, than S trees. Threshold concentrations that predicted an individual tree’s response to inoculation with P. ramorum were determined using logistic regression analysis for ellagic acid, tyrosol hexoside pentoside, and total phenolics. The identification of low molecular weight compounds (biomarkers) associated with resistance may lead to minimally invasive assays for assessing the response of individual coast live oaks or populations to P. ramorum. The ability to identify resistant trees prior to the arrival of the pathogen increases the options for managing threatened forests, e.g., by protecting highly resistant stands from logging, fire, and development.

Summary Pitch canker, caused by Gibberella circinata, was discovered in California in 1986. Although initially quite damaging to Monterey pines (Pinus radiata), the severity of pitch canker has moderated in areas where the disease was first observed and some trees appear to have recovered completely. The absence of symptoms on trees that were once severely affected implies they have become more resistant to the disease. Experimental work has shown that P. radiata can manifest systemic induced resistance (SIR) in response to infection by the pitch canker pathogen and observations of disease remission may indicate that SIR is operative under natural conditions as well. As a test of this hypothesis, the susceptibility of trees in remission was assessed by inoculating them with G. circinata and recording the extent of lesion development. In addition, randomly selected trees in areas that differed in residence time of pitch canker were inoculated to determine if trees with a longer period of exposure to the pathogen were more resistant to the disease. The results of these tests showed that 89% of trees observed to be in remission sustained very limited lesion development, consistent with resistance to pitch canker. Furthermore, trees in areas where pitch canker was well established tended to be more resistant than trees in areas where the disease was of more recent occurrence. In sum, these findings support the view that SIR occurs in P. radiata and is contributing to a moderation of the impact of pitch canker under natural conditions.

1 Experiments were conducted to determine whether propagule loads on the twig beetles Pityophthorus setosus and Pityophthorus carmeli (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) influence the pathogen infection of the host tree in the Monterey pine-Fusarium circinatum system. 2 On an average, F. circinatum was isolated from 2.6% and 3.3% of trapped P. setosus and P. carmeli, respectively, although the isolation percentages varied over the season, being highest in the spring and lowest in late summer and fall for both species. Mean pathogen load was 13.4 and 22.6 propagules per beetle, on P. setosus and P. carmeli, respectively, and decreased from May to November for both species. The pathogen was also isolated from approximately 55% of both beetle species that emerged from infected branches. Mean propagule load on emerged P. setosus and P. carmeli was 39 and 66.5, respectively. 3 On the basis of these data, beetle species were treated with one of three propagule loads (low, medium, high) and caged onto live branches to determine whether they could transmit the pathogen. At all propagule loads, both species transmitted the pathogen, and transmission percentage and lesion length, a measure of tree susceptibility, were positively correlated with propagule load. 4 To investigate further whether the previous transmission by beetles could affect response of the same trees to subsequent infection with F. circinatum, different branches were inoculated on the same trees used in the transmission study, and lesion lengths were measured. Lesion lengths were lower on trees that had been previously exposed to beetles treated with high or medium propagule loads than on trees that had previously been exposed to beetles treated with low propagule loads. This suggests that the initial infection by beetles carrying high or medium propagule loads induced resistance to subsequent infections of the host, whereas infections caused by beetles with low propagule loads did not.

We tested a new formulation of verbenone, an antiaggregation pheromone of the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), for area-wide protection of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Douglas ex Loudon) stands in the western United States. Helicopter applications of verbenone-releasing laminated flakes were made at the rate of 370 g of active ingredient/ha to two sites, one in California and one in Idaho, during summer 2005. Each site consisted of five 20.23-ha treated plots and five matching 20.23-ha untreated plots. We assessed D. ponderosae flight into study plots using traps baited with aggregation pheromones and we tallied D. ponderosae attack rates on P. contorta trees in treated and control plots before and after application. There were no significant differences between numbers of D. ponderosae trapped on treated and control plots. However, a significantly smaller proportion of P. contorta trees was attacked in treated plots than in control plots at both sites; the attack rate in untreated stands was roughly three times that of treated stands in both California and Idaho, even at this low application rate. Furthermore, attack rate in 2004 was a significant explanatory variable for the response in 2005 regardless of treatment in both California and Idaho. There was no significant treatment effect at either site on attraction of Temnochila chlorodia (Coleoptera: Trogositidae) Mannerheim, a key predator of D. ponderosae, to the prey aggregation pheromone.

We tested methylcyclohexenone (MCH), an anti-aggregation pheromone for the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae), for protection of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) stands by applying MCH-releasing polymer flakes by helicopter twice during summer 2006 to five 4.05-ha plots in the State of Washington, USA. Five similar plots served as untreated controls. We assessed D. pseudotsugae flight into study plots using baited pheromone traps, and tallied D. pseudotsugae attack rates on all P. menziesii trees in 2005 and 2006. We also measured stand basal area and incorporated that as an explanatory variable in the analysis. Significantly fewer D. pseudotsugae were trapped in treated plots than in control plots, and significantly fewer P. menziesii trees were attacked in treated plots than in control plots. The attack rate in untreated stands was nearly 10 times that of treated plots, and stands with higher basal area were significantly more likely to be attacked by D. pseudotsugae than were stands of lower basal area. Attack rates in 2006 and 2005 were significantly correlated, regardless of treatment.

The relative importance of beetle species associated with Fusarium circinatum -infected Monterey pines was investigated in three Monterey pine forests along the coast of central California, USA from April to November in 2004 and 2005. Fusarium circinatum was frequently isolated from Ips mexicanus and I. plastographus . The mean percentage isolation based upon numbers of I. mexicanus and I. plastographus carrying propagules of F. circinatum was 17·7 and 10·9% in 2004 and 16·7 and 17·3% in 2005, respectively. The mean percentage isolation was high in the spring and early summer and low in late summer and autumn in all three locations for both species. Isolation was higher from beetles emerging from harvested F. circinatum -infected pine-stems than for trapped beetles, 42·4% for I. mexicanus and 45·9% for I. plastographus . The mean ( ± SE) propagule load of trapped I. mexicanus was 269·5 ( ± 14·1) in 2004 and 281·7 ( ± 35·7) in 2005 and was 216·1 ( ± 28·9) in 2004 and 251·9 ( ± 28·4) in 2005 for I. plastographus . Mean propagule loads decreased from May to November in all locations for both species. Propagule loads of beetles emerged from infected stems were lower than that of trapped beetles, with means of 89·4 ( ± 23·2) and 93·0 ( ± 23·2) for I. mexicanus and I. plastographus , respectively. Thus beetles must acquire fungal propagules from more than one infected host. These results also suggest that higher contamination rates and propagule loads in spring and early summer may indicate a higher risk of pitch canker transmission, relative to late summer or autumn.

Abstract

We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detections of high-energy (>100 MeV) gamma-ray emission from two recent optically bright classical novae, V1369 Centauri 2013 and V5668 Sagittarii 2015. At early times, Fermi target-of-opportunity observations prompted by their optical discoveries provided enhanced LAT exposure that enabled the detections of gamma-ray onsets beginning ~2 days after their first optical peaks. Significant gamma-ray emission was found extending to 39-55 days after their initial LAT detections, with systematically fainter and longer duration emission compared to previous gamma-ray detected classical novae. These novae were distinguished by multiple bright optical peaks that encompassed the timespans of the observed gamma rays. The gamma-ray light curves and spectra of the two novae are presented along with representative hadronic and leptonic models, and comparisons to other novae detected by the LAT are discussed., 13 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, ApJ accepted

For better characterization of the risk of pitch canker (caused by Gibberella circinata , anamorph = Fusarium circinatum ) to Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ), Californian isolates, selected exotic isolates, and ascospore progeny of a cross between wild-type Californian isolates were tested for aggressiveness to this host species. In addition, seedlings from representative provenances of P. menziesii in California were tested for susceptibility to pitch canker. The results revealed only minor differences between isolates, but differences in susceptibility between trees were often significant. The majority of the tested trees were relatively resistant as indicated by the development of only very short lesions, but some were clearly susceptible.

Abstract

Steroid receptors are key transcriptional regulators of mammary growth, development and lactation. Expression of estrogen receptors alpha (ERalpha) and beta (ERbeta), progesterone receptor (PR), and estrogen-related receptor alpha-1 (ERRbeta) have been evaluated in bovine mammary gland. The ERRalpha is an orphan receptor that, in other species and tissues, appears to function in the regulation of estrogen-response genes including lactoferrin and medium chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase and in mitochondrial biogenesis. Expression of ERalpha, ERbeta, PR and ERRalpha was characterized in mammary tissue obtained from multiple stages of bovine mammary gland development using quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Expression was evaluated in prepubertal heifers, primigravid cows, lactating non-pregnant cows, lactating pregnant cows and non-lactating pregnant cows (n=4 to 9 animals/stage). In addition, ERalpha, ERbeta, PR and ERRalpha were mapped to chromosomes 9, 10, 15 and 29 respectively, by linkage and radiation hybrid mapping. Results indicated that expression of ERalpha, PR and ERRalpha was largely coordinately regulated and they were present in significant quantity during all physiological stages evaluated. In contrast, ERbeta transcripts were present at a very low concentration during all stages. Furthermore, no ERbeta protein could be detected in bovine mammary tissue by immunohistochemistry. The ERalpha and PR proteins were detected during all physiological states, including lactation. Our results demonstrate the presence of ERalpha, PR and ERRalpha during all physiological stages, and suggest a functional role for ERRalpha and a relative lack of a role for ERbeta in bovine mammary gland development and lactation.

The plant pathogenic fungus, Fusarium circinatum, is the cause of a major epidemic of pitch canker in urban forests of Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) in California. This pathogen is now also well established in all three mainland, native populations of Monterey pine where it causes conspicuous branch die-back and, frequently in association with native bark beetles, increased tree mortality. In the present study, permanent plots were established on the Monterey peninsula to characterize the severity and progress of pitch canker in the largest of the native P. radiata populations. The results indicate that the disease is significantly more severe, and is progressing more rapidly, in managed stands than in the wildland areas. Furthermore, the disease is progressing significantly faster in the coastal zone than in more inland locations.

Un plus grand nombre de Pityophtorus spp. ont emerge des branches jaunes (moyenne ± ecart type = 12,1 ± 1,7 par 30 cm) que des branches rouges (6,9 ± 0,9) au cours d'une etude a un site a l'interieur des terres (Oakland), mais a un site le long de la cote (Pebble Beach) les moyennes ne differaient pas significativement (4,3 ± 0,6 et 3,8 ± 0,7). Le taux moyen de phoresie de tous les insectes a l'emergence etait plus eleve a Pebble Beach (17,7 ± 0,6 %) qu'a Oakland (5,3 ± 0,2 %). Aux deux sites, il y avait une variation temporelle considerable de la proportion de branches colonisees par les scolytes des rameaux, du nombre moyen de scolytes a l'emergence et des taux de phoresie chez les insectes emerges. La taille des branches en copeaux reduisait d'environ 95 % l'emergence des Pityophthorus spp. et autres especes associees comparativement a l'emergence dans les branches intactes. L'agent pathogene a pu etre isole a partir de branches et de copeaux de bois de 1 an dans 68 % des echantillons, mais n'a ete trouve dans les branches de 3 ans que dansl echantillon sur 46. Nous recommandons d'eviter le transport de branches coupees et de copeaux provenant d'arbres porteurs de symptomes dans les zones d'ou la maladie semble absente.

Abstract

Body dysmorphic disorder describes the preoccupation with an imagined defect of appearance. A subgroup of patients suffer from the so-called Thersites complex, in which a minimal physical deformity causes excessive psychological disturbances and distress. Patients with body dysmorphic disorder tend primarily to visit a plastic surgeon for relief with distinct plans for surgical correction of their "deformity." Psychotherapy is generally refused or ineffective. The plastic surgeon should be familiar with this mental disorder and recognize these patients during consultation. Most of these patients should be excluded from surgery; however, patients of the Thersites complex category might be candidates for plastic surgical correction after careful selection. Only the experienced plastic surgeon should make the decision to operate in this situation. A successful treatment can relieve the patient from his or her distress and improve the quality of life substantially. A surgical result that is not accepted by the patient can end in a tragedy for either the patient or the doctor.

Abstract

To investigate possible circadian and ultradian periodicities for peripheral insulin and urea in lactating dairy cows, integrated 15-min blood samples were taken sequentially over 48 hr from six cows. In addition, radiotelemetry measurements of body temperature were averaged over the same 15-min periods. Cows were housed in an environmental chamber at 19 degrees C with lights on 0700 to 2300 hr; fed daily at 0900 hr; and milked at 0800 and 2000 hr. For five of the six cows, body temperature showed a circadian rhythm peaking at 2323 hr with an amplitude of 0.34 degree C. For the sixth cow, body temperature was 180 degrees out-of-phase, peaking at 1230 hr with an amplitude of 0.12 degree C. Circadian rhythms for insulin and urea were consistent for all six cows peaking at 1743 hr with an amplitude of 0.74 ng/ml for insulin and at 1034 hr with an amplitude of 3.83 mM for urea. Body temperature and insulin also displayed episodic increases that often exceeded the amplitudes of circadian rhythms. For body temperature, a broad increase in spectral power was seen for periods between 100 and 175 min; time intervals between peaks averaged around 100 min. For insulin, power spectra for individual cows universally indicated rhythms with periods of approximately 45 and 80 min; time intervals between peaks averaged approximately 65 min. For urea, almost all spectral energy was confined to the 24-hr rhythm, although there was evidence of a low-amplitude, 60-min rhythm. In conclusion, when animals are acclimated to a rigidly controlled environment and frequent blood sampling is accomplished with minimal intervention, it is possible to detect rhythms inherent in the regulation of metabolic variables.

Abstract

Using data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), we report the first clear gamma-ray measurement of a delay between flares from the gravitationally lensed images of a blazar. The delay was detected in B0218+357, a known double-image lensed system, during a period of enhanced gamma-ray activity with peak fluxes consistently observed to reach >20-50x its previous average flux. An auto-correlation function analysis identified a delay in the gamma-ray data of 11.46 +/- 0.16 days (1 sigma) that is similar to 1 day greater than previous radio measurements. Considering that it is beyond the capabilities of the LAT to spatially resolve the two images, we nevertheless decomposed individual sequences of superposing gamma-ray flares/delayed emissions. In three such similar to 8-10 day-long sequences within a similar to 4 month span, considering confusion due to overlapping flaring emission and flux measurement uncertainties, we found flux ratios consistent with similar to 1, thus systematically smaller than those from radio observations. During the first, best-defined flare, the delayed emission was detailed with a Fermi pointing, and we observed flux doubling timescales of similar to 3-6 hr implying as well extremely compact gamma-ray emitting regions.

Abstract

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) observed two bright X-class solar flares on 2012 March 7, and detected gamma-rays up to 4 GeV. We detected gamma-rays both during the impulsive and temporally-extended emission phases, with emission above 100 MeV lasting for approximately 20 hours. Accurate localization of the gamma-ray production site(s) coincide with the solar active region from which X-ray emissions associated with these flares originated. Our analysis of the >100 MeV gamma-ray emission shows a relatively rapid monotonic decrease in flux during the first hour of the impulsive phase, and a much slower, almost monotonic decrease in flux for the next 20 hours. The spectra can be adequately described by a power law with a high energy exponential cutoff, or as resulting from the decay of neutral pions produced by accelerated protons and ions with an isotropic power-law energy distribution. The required proton spectrum has a number index ~3, with minor variations during the impulsive phase, while during the temporally extended phase the spectrum softens monotonically, starting with index ~4. The >30 MeV proton flux and spectra observed near the Earth by the GOES satellites also show a monotonic flux decrease and spectral softening during the extended phase, but with a harder spectrum, with index ~3. Based on the Fermi-LAT and GOES observations of the flux and spectral evolution of these bright flares, we explore the relative merits of prompt and continuous acceleration scenarios, hadronic and leptonic emission processes, and acceleration at the solar corona by the fast Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) as explanations for the observations. We conclude that the most likely scenario is continuous acceleration of protons in the solar corona which penetrate the lower solar atmosphere and produce pions that decay into gamma-rays., Comment: Contact Authors: N. Abstract

This catalog summarizes 117 high-confidence > 0.1 GeV gamma-ray pulsar detections using three years of data acquired by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi satellite. Half are neutron stars discovered using LAT data, through periodicity searches in gamma-ray and radio data around LAT unassociated source positions. The 117 pulsars are evenly divided into three groups: millisecond pulsars, young radio-loud pulsars, and young radio-quiet pulsars. We characterize the pulse profiles and energy spectra and derive luminosities when distance information exists. Spectral analysis of the off-peak phase intervals indicates probable pulsar wind nebula emission for four pulsars, and off-peak magnetospheric emission for several young and millisecond pulsars. We compare the gamma-ray properties with those in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. We provide flux limits for pulsars with no observed gamma-ray emission, highlighting a small number of gamma-faint, radio-loud pulsars. The large, varied gamma-ray pulsar sample constrains emission models. Fermi's selection biases complement those of radio surveys, enhancing comparisons with predicted population distributions., Comment: 145 pages. Abstract

Using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) we performed deep observations to search for radio pulsations in the directions of unidentified Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray sources. We report the discovery of an eclipsing black-widow millisecond pulsar, PSR J1544+4937, identified with the un-cataloged gamma-ray source Fermi J1544.2+4941. This 2.16 ms pulsar is in a 2.9 hours compact circular orbit with a very low-mass companion (Mc > 0.017 Msun). At 322 MHz this pulsar is found to be eclipsing for 13% of its orbit, whereas at 607 MHz the pulsar is detected throughout the low-frequency eclipse phase. Variations in the eclipse ingress phase are observed, indicating a clumpy and variable eclipsing medium. Moreover, additional short-duration absorption events are observed around the eclipse boundaries. Using the radio timing ephemeris we were able to detect gamma-ray pulsations from this pulsar, confirming it as the source powering the gamma-ray emission., 15 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Abstract

A single active fraction, eliciting both induction of trail-following and trail orientation, was isolated by HPLC from dichloromethane extracts of excised fourth and fifth sternites of Reticulitermes hesperus workers. GC separation of the active high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fraction and subsequent bioassays indicated that a single major component is responsible both for induction of trail-following and for orientation of termites on the trail. Solvent extracts of intact termite bodies and excised sternites elicited greater trail-following activity than extracts of excised abdomens or thoraxes not separated from heads. Workers from two geographically separate colonies responded similarily to dichloromethane extracts of intact bodies and excised sternites from members of either colony, providing no evidence of extractable colony-recognition compounds, although the results suggest that different colonies may produce different quantities of trail pheromone.

Abstract

The first station of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA1) was completed in April 2011 and is currently performing observations resulting from its first call for proposals in addition to a continuing program of commissioning and characterization observations. The instrument consists of 258 dual-polarization dipoles, which are digitized and combined into beams. Four independently-steerable dual-polarization beams are available, each with two "tunings" of 16 MHz bandwidth that can be independently tuned to any frequency between 10 MHz and 88 MHz. The system equivalent flux density for zenith pointing is ~3 kJy and is approximately independent of frequency; this corresponds to a sensitivity of ~5 Jy/beam (5sigma, 1 s); making it one of the most sensitive meter-wavelength radio telescopes. LWA1 also has two "transient buffer" modes which allow coherent recording from all dipoles simultaneously, providing instantaneous all-sky field of view. LWA1 provides versatile and unique new capabilities for Galactic science, pulsar science, solar and planetary science, space weather, cosmology, and searches for astrophysical transients. Results from LWA1 will detect or tightly constrain the presence of hot Jupiters within 50 parsecs of Earth. LWA1 will provide excellent resolution in frequency and in time to examine phenomena such as solar bursts, and pulsars over a 4:1 frequency range that includes the poorly understood turnover and steep-spectrum regimes. Observations to date have proven LWA1's potential for pulsar observing, and just a few seconds with the completed 256-dipole LWA1 provide the most sensitive images of the sky at 23 MHz obtained yet. We are operating LWA1 as an open skies radio observatory, offering ~2000 beam-hours per year to the general community., accepted to the Journal of Astronomical Instrumentation, 29 pages, 14 figures

The Long Wavelength Array Software Library (LSL) is a Python module that provides a collection of utilities to analyze and export data collected at the first station of the Long Wavelength Array, LWA1. Due to the nature of the data format and large-N ($\gtrsim$100 inputs) challenges faced by the LWA, currently available software packages are not suited to process the data. Using tools provided by LSL, observers can read in the raw LWA1 data, synthesize a filter bank, and apply incoherent de-dispersion to the data. Abstract

To investigate possible circadian and ultradian periodicities for peripheral prolactin in lactating dairy cows, integrated 15-min blood samples taken sequentially over 48 h from six cows were analyzed by radioimmunoassay. Cows were housed in an environmental chamber at 19 degrees C with lights on 0700 to 2300, fed daily at 0900, and milked at 0800 and 2000. Peripheral concentrations exhibited sinusoidal circadian rhythms. For two cows, a nadir of 15 ng/ml occurred around 1900 and a zenith of 29 ng/ml around 0730. For four cows, circadian rhythms were 180 degrees out of phase, with a nadir of 28 ng/ml around 0840 and a zenith of 40 mg/ml around 1920. Ultradian peaks, which varied in amplitude within and among animals, showed no consistent relationship with either milking or feeding. Spectral analyses indicated rhythms around 100 min for the first two animals and 150 min for the four animals. In conclusion, there were no simple relations between prolactin rhythms and lights on or lights off. Further, results suggest that changes in the phase of circadian rhythms may be associated with changes in the periods of ultradian rhythms.

Abstract

Circadian and ultradian rhythms of thyroxine and triiodothyronine were analyzed by radioimmunoassay on integrated 15-min blood samples collected for 48 h from six lactating dairy cows. Body temperatures were recorded every 1.4 min using radiotelemetry. The cows were housed in an environmental chamber at 19.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C (lights on between 0700 and 2300 h), fed daily at 0900 h, and milked at 0800 and 2000 h. Mean concentrations of plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine exhibited similar circadian rhythms with minima (0500-1300 h) and maxima (1700-0200 h) separated by 12 h. Triiodothyronine peaked 2 h before thyroxine. The thyroxine circadian rhythm preceded a circadian body temperature rhythm by 2 h. Superimposed on the circadian rhythm was an ultradian rhythm with a 90-min period that was 15-20% of the mean thyroid hormone concentrations. Peak thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentrations were 50 +/- 2 and 1.58 +/- 0.17 ng/ml, and minimal concentrations were 42 +/- 2 and 0.94 +/- 0.17 ng/ml, respectively. Our data indicate that peripheral triiodothyronine is regulated independently of peripheral thyroxine concentration.

Abstract

Following attack by Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte, ponderosa pines were periodically sampled over 7 weeks. Xylem water conduction was assessed using a dye flow technique. Fungal isolations were made from functioning and occluded xylem. Neither Ophiostoma nigrocarpum (Davids.) de Hoog or other bluestain fungi were commonly found at the interface of the occluded and functioning xylem. Instead, blue-stain fungi appear to colonize already occluded xylem, not cause xylem occlusion by direct hyphal penetration of functioning sapwood. No evidence for a mutualistic association of D. brevicomis and its vectored bluestain fungi was found.

Abstract

Twenty-four Holstein cows, producing at least 21 kg of milk/d, were used in two replicate experiments to determine the effect of presence or absence of pulsation on loss of teat canal keratin during machine milking. Left quarters were milked without pulsation and right quarters were milked with pulsation. On d 0 and 10, keratin was collected from one left and from one right teat canal of each cow prior to milking and from the remaining two teat canals after milking. Milk was collected for assessment of SCC and bacteriological status on d 0 and approximately every 3 d until d 18. Quantity of keratin recovered before milking on d 10 did not differ between teats milked with or without pulsation, but loss of keratin because of milking was greater from teats milked with pulsation. By d 7, 30% (12 of 43) of quarters milked without pulsation had become infected, but no (0 of 47) quarters milked with pulsation were infected. By d 14 to 16, new infections had increased to 68% (28 of 41) of quarters milked without pulsation and 2% (1 of 43) in quarters milked with pulsation; mean SCC in pulsationless quarters increased sevenfold relative to pulsation quarters. Protein and water content of keratin did not differ because of treatment, and changes in lipid composition were minor. Histological analysis of the teats of 4 cows indicated that the mean diameter of the teat canal, within 2 h after milking, was greater without pulsation than with pulsation (680 vs. 483 μm).

Abstract

We report on the discovery of \geq 100 MeV {\gamma} rays from the binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board Fermi. The system comprises a radio pulsar in orbit around a Be star. We report on LAT observations from near apastron to ~ 60 days after the time of periastron, tp, on 2010 December 15. No {\gamma}-ray emission was detected from this source when it was far from periastron. Faint {\gamma}-ray emission appeared as the pulsar approached periastron. At ~ tp + 30d, the \geq 100 MeV {\gamma}-ray flux increased over a period of a few days to a peak flux 20-30 times that seen during the pre-periastron period, but with a softer spectrum. For the following month, it was seen to be variable on daily time scales, but remained at ~ 1 - 4 \times 10^-6 cm^-2 s^-1 before starting to fade at ~ tp + 57d. The total {\gamma}-ray luminosity observed during this period is comparable to the spin-down power of the pulsar. Simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of the source showed no corresponding dramatic changes in radio and X-ray flux between the pre-periastron and post-periastron flares. The American Academy of Pediatrics and its members are committed to improving the health care system to provide the best and safest health care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. In response to a 1999 Institute of Medicine report on building a safer health system, a set of principles was established to guide the profession in designing a health care system that maximizes quality of care and minimizes medical errors through identification and resolution. This set of principles provides direction on setting up processes to identify and learn from errors, developing performance standards and expectations for safety, and promoting leadership and knowledge.

Abstract

The Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO) is the only spaceborne hyperspectral sensor designed for characterization of the coastal maritime environment. It was taken from a set of written requirements to a complete hardware package ready for spacecraft-level testing in 16 months. It had to meet NASA's safety requirements for the ISS. A means of directing the sensor's line of sight to off-nadir directions was essential. Construction of HICO was made possible by extensive use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, with minor modifications for spaceflight/vacuum conditions where necessary. Efficient engineering combined these components into a complete system that met all requirements.

Abstract

The design and early results of the Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO) are presented. The performance requirements imposed on the sensor to measure the low signals and to differentiate the optically complex spectra of the coastal ocean are discussed. It is shown the as-built sensor meets or exceeds the design parameters. Further, environmental products from early retrievals of the HICO imagery are presented.

Abstract

This paper presents a search for radio transients at a frequency of 73.8 MHz (4 m wavelength) using the all-sky imaging capabilities of the Long Wavelength Demonstrator Array (LWDA). The LWDA was a 16-dipole phased array telescope, located on the site of the Very Large Array in New Mexico. The field of view of the individual dipoles was essentially the entire sky, and the number of dipoles was sufficiently small that a simple software correlator could be used to make all-sky images. From 2006 October to 2007 February, we conducted an all-sky transient search program, acquiring a total of 106 hr of data; the time sampling varied, being 5 minutes at the start of the program and improving to 2 minutes by the end of the program. We were able to detect solar flares, and in a special-purpose mode, radio reflections from ionized meteor trails during the 2006 Leonid meteor shower. We detected no transients originating outside of the solar system above a flux density limit of 500 Jy, equivalent to a limit of no more than about 10^{-2} events/yr/deg^2, having a pulse energy density >~ 1.5 x 10^{-20} J/m^2/Hz at 73.8 MHz for pulse widths of about 300 s. This event rate is comparable to that determined from previous all-sky transient searches, but at a lower frequency than most previous all-sky searches. Abstract

Survival and development of Ips paraconfusus Lanier larvae reared individually in intact Pinus ponderosa Laws. phloem without associated fungi and dietary supplements was demonstrated. Survival was reduced.in intact ponderosa pine phloem previously occupied by other larvae or by bluestaining fungi [i.e. Ophiostoma ips (Rumb.) vectored by I. paraconfusus, O. minus (Hedge.) H. & P. Syd. vectored by Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte, O. clavigerum (Robins.-Jeff. & Davids.) vectored by D. ponderosae Hopkins, and Leptographium terebrantis Barras & Perry vectored by D. valens LeConte] compared with those reared without fungi or symbiotic yeasts. The highest proportion of larvae initiating tunnels and surviving to adult was observed for untreated eggs, and the lowest proportion occurred in the L. terebrantis treatment. Size was reduced and developmental rate was slower for larvae reared without fungi compared with larvae reared with associated fungi.Tunnels excavated by first- and second-instar larvae reared without associated fungi were longer than those excavated by larvae reared with associated fungi. The most frequent larval turnabouts occurred with larvae reared axenically and reared with Ips yeast and O. ips. The fewest occurred with larvae reared with Ips egg niche plugs and from untreated eggs. Females reared free of any fungi or with Penicillium or Aspergillus did not oviposit in surface-sterilized ponderosa pine logs. Naturally eclosed females from ponderosa pine logs in which they developed, laid eggs in these sterilized logs. Potential for a new association among bark beetles and fungi is discussed.

Abstract

The onset of medium-chain fatty acid synthesis in the human mammary gland was investigated. Colostrum and serum were collected from 31 healthy women and the fatty acid composition of total lipid was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. Although colostrum/serum ratios for most fatty acids range from 0.7-2.4, very low levels of 10:0 and 12:0 were present in serum lipids as compared to much higher concentrations of these fatty acids in colostrum lipids (colostrum/serum ratio 16.23 and 17.11 for 10:0 and 12:0, respectively). We have previously found that medium-chain fatty acid levels are very low in prepartum mammary secretions (6-10 wk before term delivery) but are higher and similar in colostrum of women who deliver preterm (3-14 wk) or at full term. The data indicate that parturition, irrespective of length of pregnancy, is the trigger for medium-chain fatty acid synthesis in the human mammary gland.

Abstract

Fatty acid composition ofcolostrum, milk, and serum was studied during two consecutive lactations in the same woman. There were marked differences between milk and serum: medium chain fatty acids (C6:0-Cl4:0) were higher in milk (8.36-2 1.37%) than in serum (1 .59-9.6%) throughout lactation. The high milk-serum ratio of medium chain fatty acids (up to 28.4, 30.2, and 6.2 for 10:0, 12:0, and 14:0, respectively) indicates synthesis in the mammary gland. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (C20:l-C22:6) of the n-3 and n-6 series were higher in serum (6.76-12.53%) than in milk (1 .57-4.42%). With the exception of colostrum, the fatty acid composition of milk and serum changed little during lactation and was similar in two consecutive lactations in the same woman. Comparison of milk and serum fatty acids provides a noninvasive approach for the assessment ofthe synthetic activity ofthe human mammary gland. Am J Cliii Nuir 1992:56:65-70.

Abstract

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on--board the Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope began its on--orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft boresight alignments. Here we describe on orbit calibration results obtained using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch. These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly released in August 2009., 60 pages, 34 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The laboratory characterization of the optical and radiometric properties of the Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO) is presented. It is shown the as-built sensor meets or exceeds the design parameters necessary to meet the stringent requirements imposed by maritime hyperspectral imaging. The results confirm that in general, the design parameters have been satisfied and the measured system response and signal to noise ratio is shown to match the sensor model. The results are discussed.

42. A permafrost implementation in the simple carbon–climate model Hector v.2.3pf

Abstract

Permafrost currently stores more than a fourth of global soil carbon. A warming climate makes this carbon increasingly vulnerable to decomposition and release into the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases. The resulting climate feedback can be estimated using land surface models, but the high complexity and computational cost of these models make it challenging to use them for estimating uncertainty, exploring novel scenarios, and coupling with other models. We have added a representation of permafrost to the simple, open-source global carbon–climate model Hector, calibrated to be consistent with both historical data and 21st century Earth system model projections of permafrost thaw. We include permafrost as a separate land carbon pool that becomes available for decomposition into both methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) once thawed; the thaw rate is controlled by region-specific air temperature increases from a preindustrial baseline. We found that by 2100 thawed permafrost carbon emissions increased Hector’s atmospheric CO2 concentration by 5 %–7 % and the atmospheric CH4 concentration by 7 %–12 %, depending on the future scenario, resulting in 0.2–0.25 ∘C of additional warming over the 21st century. The fraction of thawed permafrost carbon available for decomposition was the most significant parameter controlling the end-of-century temperature change in the model, explaining around 70 % of the temperature variance, and was distantly followed by the initial stock of permafrost carbon, which contributed to about 10 % of the temperature variance. The addition of permafrost in Hector provides a basis for the exploration of a suite of science questions, as Hector can be cheaply run over a wide range of parameter values to explore uncertainty and can be easily coupled with integrated assessment and other human system models to explore the economic consequences of warming from this feedback.

Abstract

Ips mexicanus (Hopkins) and I. paraconfusus Lanier can transmit a frugal pathogen that causes pitch canker [Fusarium subglutinans (Wollenw, and Reink.) Nelson, Toussoun, andMarasas], a disease recently identified in Monterey pines (Pirns radiata D. Don) in California. In Santa Cruz County, F. subglutinans was recovered from Ips spp. that emerged from pitch canker-in fee ted P. radiata and were captured in multiple-funnel traps baited with racemic Ips spp. pheromones. Ips paraconfusus adults experimentally contaminated with propagules of the fungus transmitted it to seedlings and mature pines. Field transmission was demonstrated when cankers were produced following pheromone-induced beetle attacks on pines. Ips spp. inoculated F. subglutinans into pine slash, thus creating reservoirs of this fungus. Larvae, pupae, and young adults acquired the fungus when their parents introduced it into logs. Ips spp. progeny production and development were not significantly altered by the fungus. In proximity to other bark beetle-associated fungi, growth of F. subglutinans was reduced and patchy. A new association may be developing among native Ips spp. and F. subglutinans.

Abstract

Blood samples from six lactating dairy cows were analyzed to determine whether circulating neutral lipids exhibit rhythmic variations. Plasma neutral lipids were measured by quantitative TLC on every fourth integrated 15-min blood sample taken over 48-h periods. Cows were housed in an environmental chamber at 20 degrees C with 16 h light:8 h dark (lights on at 0700 h), fed daily at 0900 h, and milked at 0830 and 2000 h. Other variables monitored included: body temperature, ammonia nitrogen, urea nitrogen, glucose, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, somatotropin, insulin, cortisol, and prolactin. Mean concentrations of cholesterol, cholesteryl esters, free fatty acids, and triglycerides were 21.4, 175.4, 3.1, and 6.3 mg/dl, respectively. Visual and power spectral analysis of the pulsatile fluctuations in lipids indicated rhythms with periods of 2 to 3 h. Amplitudes of rhythms for free fatty acids and triglycerides were 60% of mean concentrations and for cholesterol and cholesteryl esters were 20% of mean concentrations. The presence of these rhythms was conserved when data were averaged across time by cow. However, because of nonstationary conditions, rhythms identified by spectral analysis were not statistically significant. There was no evidence of circadian patterns in circulating neutral lipid components. All other metabolic and hormonal variables except cortisol exhibited distinct circadian rhythms.

Abstract

Methods for collecting keratin from the teat canal were examined to select a procedure to obtain representative samples for lipid analysis. Data obtained by solvent extraction of excised teats were compared with those obtained by scraping keratin from dissected teats of lactating and dry cows. Solvent extraction with petroleum ether or 2:1 chloroform-methanol yielded similar dry weights of material. However, both solvents removed large amounts of material other than keratin from the teat canal. The lipid class and fatty acid profiles of the material extracted by solvent flushing were not similar to profiles obtained by scraping keratin from the teat canal. A metal tapestry needle was suitable for collection of keratin from the teat canal of living cows. About 78% of the keratin present in the teat was collected with the needle. Lipid composition of keratin collected with the needle was the same as in keratin scraped from excised teats. The tapestry needle was suitable as a tool for collecting repeatable, representative samples of keratin for analysis from single teat canals of living cows.

Abstract

The Unconventional Stellar Aspect (USA) experiment is a multi-purpose experiment built around an X-ray sensor viewing celestial sources. The objectives include both basic research in X-ray Astronomy and the systematic exploration of certain applied uses of X-ray sensors in space. The applied uses depend in large part upon exploiting understanding of celestial X-ray sources accumulated through research. A further feature is that the experiment includes a testbed devoted to the study of methods for reliable cm puting in space. The experiment was launched from Vandenberg AFB, CA aboard the Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite (ARGOS). The ARGOS launch occurred on 23 February 1999. ARGOS is in a sun synchronous, circular orbit at 830 km altitude. The experiment was initialized in April 1999. It consists of a pair of proportional counters mounted in a two-axis gimbal for offset pointing from the nadir-pointed ARGOS. We will present an overview of the experiment, discuss its science goals, and present an overview of results from the experiment.

Abstract

Adherence of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil to feeding tubes during gavage feeding of Enfamil formula was quantitated. Infants were fed similar volumes of either unfortified formula (n = 11) or MCT oil-fortified formula (0.5 ml/oz); either the MCT oil was mixed with the formula before feeding (n = 11) or the MCT oil was delivered into the feeding tube and then was followed by formula (n = 11). The fat residue in the feeding sets was quantitated by gravimetry, and individual fatty acids were characterized by gas-liquid chromatography. The data show that only trace amounts of lipid (0.23 +/- 0.04%) adhered to feeding sets during feeding of unfortified formula. Significantly more lipid (p less than 0.0005) adhered when formula was fortified with MCT oil, and the method of feeding greatly affected lipid adherence, i.e., 1.52 +/- 0.21% when the MCT oil was followed by formula versus 10.20 +/- 1.76% when the MCT oil was mixed with formula before feeding. Analysis of the fat residue of fortified formula showed that greater than 90% was composed of C8:0 and C10:0, the major fatty acid components of MCT oil. We suggest that care be exercised when fortifying infant formula with MCT oil.

Abstract

Although there is a continuing need for timely review of child deaths, no uniform system exists for investigation in the United States. Investigation of a death that is traumatic, unexpected, obscure, suspicious, or otherwise unexplained in a child younger than 18 years requires a scene investigation and an autopsy. Review of these deaths requires the participation of pediatricians and other professionals, usually as a child death review team. An appropriately constituted team should evaluate the death investigation process, review difficult cases, and compile child death statistics.
