There has been substantial growth in the UAV market along with an expansion in their applications. However, the successful execution of a UAV mission is very often dependent on the use of a GNSS. Unfortunately, the vulnerability of GNSS signals, due to their lack of encryption and authentication, poses a significant cybersecurity issue. This vulnerability makes various attacks, particularly the "GNSS spoofing attack," and "GNSS jamming attack" easily executable. Generally speaking, during this attack, the drone is manipulated into altering its path, usually resulting in an immediate forced landing or crash. As far as we know, we are the first to propose a lightweight-solution that enable a drone to autonomously rescue itself, assuming it is under GNSS attack and the GNSS is no longer available, and return safely to its initial takeoff position, thereby preventing any potential crashes. During the flight, wind plays a critical role as it can instantaneously alter the drone's position. To solve this problem, we have devised a highly effective 2-phases solution: (i) Forward Phase, for monitoring and recording the forward journey, and (ii) Backward Phase, that generates a backward route, based on the Forward Phase and wind presence. Source Inference Attack (SIA) in Federated Learning (FL) aims to identify which client used a target data point for local model training. It allows the central server to audit clients' data usage. In cross-silo FL, a client (silo) collects data from multiple subjects (e.g., individuals, writers, or devices), posing a risk of subject information leakage. Subject Membership Inference Attack (SMIA) targets this scenario and attempts to infer whether any client utilizes data points from a target subject in cross-silo FL. However, existing results on SMIA are limited and based on strong assumptions on the attack scenario. Therefore, we propose a Subject-Level Source Inference Attack (SLSIA) by removing critical constraints that only one client can use a target data point in SIA and imprecise detection of clients utilizing target subject data in SMIA. The attacker, positioned on the server side, controls a target data source and aims to detect all clients using data points from the target subject. Our strategy leverages a binary attack classifier to predict whether the embeddings returned by a local model on test data from the target subject include unique patterns that indicate a client trains the model with data from that subject. To achieve this, the attacker locally pre-trains models using data derived from the target subject and then leverages them to build a training set for the binary attack classifier. Our SLSIA significantly outperforms previous methods on three datasets. Specifically, SLSIA achieves a maximum average accuracy of 0.88 over 50 target subjects. Analyzing embedding distribution and input feature distance shows that datasets with sparse subjects are more susceptible to our attack. Finally, we propose to defend our SLSIA using item-level and subject-level differential privacy mechanisms.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), commonly mimicking neurons with non-linear functions to output floating-point numbers, consistently receive the same signals of a data point during its forward time. Unlike ANNs, Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) get various input signals in the forward time of a data point and simulate neurons in a biologically plausible way, i.e., producing a spike (a binary value) if the accumulated membrane potential of a neuron is larger than a threshold. Even though ANNs have achieved remarkable success in multiple tasks, e.g., face recognition and object detection, SNNs have recently obtained attention due to their low power consumption, fast inference, and event-driven properties. While privacy threats against ANNs are widely explored, much less work has been done on SNNs. For instance, it is well-known that ANNs are vulnerable to the Membership Inference Attack (MIA), but whether the same applies to SNNs is not explored. In this paper, we evaluate the membership privacy of SNNs by considering eight MIAs, seven of which are inspired by MIAs against ANNs. Our evaluation results show that SNNs are more vulnerable (maximum 10% higher in terms of balanced attack accuracy) than ANNs when both are trained with neuromorphic datasets (with time dimension). On the other hand, when training ANNs or SNNs with static datasets (without time dimension), the vulnerability depends on the dataset used. If we convert ANNs trained with static datasets to SNNs, the accuracy of MIAs drops (maximum 11.5% with a reduction of 7.6% on the test accuracy of the target model). Next, we explore the impact factors of MIAs on SNNs by conducting a hyperparameter study. Finally, we show that the basic data augmentation method for static data and two recent data augmentation methods for neuromorphic data can considerably (maximum reduction of 25.7%) decrease MIAs' performance on SNNs.

We report the observation of a two-dimensional dam break flow of a photon fluid in a nonlinear optical crystal. By precisely shaping the amplitude and phase of the input wave, we investigate the transition from one-dimensional (1D) to two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear dynamics. We observe wave breaking in both transverse spatial dimensions with characteristic timescales determined by the aspect ratio of the input box-shaped field. The interaction of dispersive shock waves propagating in orthogonal directions gives rise to a 2D ensemble of solitons. Depending on the box size, we report the evidence of a dynamic phase characterized by a constant number of solitons, resembling a 1D solitons gas in integrable systems. We measure the statistical features of this gaseous-like phase. Our findings pave the way to the investigation of collective solitonic phenomena in two dimensions, demonstrating that the loss of integrability does not disrupt the dominant phenomenology.

The success of learning-based coding techniques and the development of learning-based image coding standards, such as JPEG-AI, point towards the adoption of such solutions in different fields, including the storage of biometric data, like fingerprints. However, the peculiar nature of learning-based compression artifacts poses several issues concerning their impact and effectiveness on extracting biometric features and landmarks, e.g., minutiae. This problem is utterly stressed by the fact that most models are trained on natural color images, whose characteristics are very different from usual biometric images, e.g, fingerprint or iris pictures. As a matter of fact, these issues are deemed to be accurately questioned and investigated, being such analysis still largely unexplored. This study represents the first investigation about the adaptability of learning-based image codecs in the storage of fingerprint images by measuring its impact on the extraction and characterization of minutiae. Experimental results show that at a fixed rate point, learned solutions considerably outperform previous fingerprint coding standards, like JPEG2000, both in terms of distortion and minutiae preservation. Indeed, experimental results prove that the peculiarities of learned compression artifacts do not prevent automatic fingerprint identification (since minutiae types and locations are not significantly altered), nor do compromise image quality for human visual inspection (as they gain in terms of BD rate and PSNR of 47.8% and +3.97dB respectively)., Comment: Accepted ad Wifs 2024

In smart retail applications, the large number of products and their frequent turnover necessitate reliable zero-shot object classification methods. The zero-shot assumption is essential to avoid the need for re-training the classifier every time a new product is introduced into stock or an existing product undergoes rebranding. In this paper, we make three key contributions. Firstly, we introduce the MIMEX dataset, comprising 28 distinct product categories. Unlike existing datasets in the literature, MIMEX focuses on fine-grained product classification and includes a diverse range of retail products. Secondly, we benchmark the zero-shot object classification performance of state-of-the-art vision-language models (VLMs) on the proposed MIMEX dataset. Our experiments reveal that these models achieve unsatisfactory fine-grained classification performance, highlighting the need for specialized approaches. Lastly, we propose a novel ensemble approach that integrates embeddings from CLIP and DINOv2 with dimensionality reduction techniques to enhance classification performance. By combining these components, our ensemble approach outperforms VLMs, effectively capturing visual cues crucial for fine-grained product discrimination. Additionally, we introduce a class adaptation method that utilizes visual prototyping with limited samples in scenarios with scarce labeled data, addressing a critical need in retail environments where product variety frequently changes. To encourage further research into zero-shot object classification for smart retail applications, we will release both the MIMEX dataset and benchmark to the research community. The exoplanet sub-Neptune population currently poses a conundrum. Are small-size planets volatile-rich cores without atmosphere, or are they rocky cores surrounded by H-He envelope? To test the different hypotheses from an observational point of view, a large sample of small-size planets with precise mass and radius measurements is the first necessary step. On top of that, much more information will likely be needed, including atmospheric characterisation and a demographic perspective on their bulk properties. We present the concept and strategy of THIRSTEE, a project which aims at shedding light on the composition of the sub-Neptune population across stellar types by increasing their number and improving the accuracy of bulk density measurements, as well as investigating their atmospheres and performing statistical, demographic analysis. We report the first results of the program, characterising a 2-planet system around the M dwarf TOI-406. We analyse TESS and ground-based photometry, together with ESPRESSO and NIRPS/HARPS RVs to derive the orbital parameters and investigate the internal composition of the 2 planets orbiting TOI-406, which have radii and masses of $R_b = 1.32 \pm 0.12 R_{\oplus}$, $M_b = 2.08_{-0.22}^{+0.23} M_{\oplus}$ and $R_c = 2.08_{-0.15}^{+0.16} R_{\oplus}$, $M_c = 6.57_{-0.90}^{+1.00} M_{\oplus}$, and periods of $3.3$ and $13.2$ days, respectively. Planet b is consistent with an Earth-like composition, while planet c is compatible with multiple internal composition models, including volatile-rich planets without H/He atmospheres. The 2 planets are located in 2 distinct regions in the mass-density diagram, supporting the existence of a density gap among small exoplanets around M dwarfs. With an equilibrium temperature of only 368 K, TOI-406 c stands up as a particularly interesting target for atmospheric characterisation with JWST in the low-temperature regime., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures. High frame rate and accurate depth estimation plays an important role in several tasks crucial to robotics and automotive perception. To date, this can be achieved through ToF and LiDAR devices for indoor and outdoor applications, respectively. However, their applicability is limited by low frame rate, energy consumption, and spatial sparsity. Depth on Demand (DoD) allows for accurate temporal and spatial depth densification achieved by exploiting a high frame rate RGB sensor coupled with a potentially lower frame rate and sparse active depth sensor. Our proposal jointly enables lower energy consumption and denser shape reconstruction, by significantly reducing the streaming requirements on the depth sensor thanks to its three core stages: i) multi-modal encoding, ii) iterative multi-modal integration, and iii) depth decoding. The Software Supply Chain (SSC) security is a critical concern for both users and developers. Recent incidents, like the SolarWinds Orion compromise, proved the widespread impact resulting from the distribution of compromised software. The reliance on open-source components, which constitute a significant portion of modern software, further exacerbates this risk. To enhance SSC security, the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) has been promoted as a tool to increase transparency and verifiability in software composition. However, despite its promise, SBOMs are not without limitations. Current SBOM generation tools often suffer from inaccuracies in identifying components and dependencies, leading to the creation of erroneous or incomplete representations of the SSC. Despite existing studies exposing these limitations, their impact on the vulnerability detection capabilities of security tools is still unknown. In this paper, we perform the first security analysis on the vulnerability detection capabilities of tools receiving SBOMs as input. We comprehensively evaluate SBOM generation tools by providing their outputs to vulnerability identification software. Based on our results, we identify the root causes of these tools' ineffectiveness and propose PIP-sbom, a novel pip-inspired solution that addresses their shortcomings. PIP-sbom provides improved accuracy in component identification and dependency resolution. Compared to best-performing state-of-the-art tools, PIP-sbom increases the average precision and recall by 60%, and reduces by ten times the number of false positives.

We explore the effects of stress on silicon donor bound exciton ($\mathrm{D^0X}$) transitions in bulk silicon and in microfabricated silicon devices. We first study $\mathrm{D^0X}$ transitions in an isotopically purified silicon-28 bulk doped sample under controlled uniaxial stress, confirming the validity of existing models in the low strain ($\lesssim 10^{-5}$) regime. We then demonstrate the localised photoconductive detection of a few thousand donors illuminated by a 1078 nm resonant laser with $4~\mathrm{\mu m}$ spot focused on a microfabricated device consisting of an implanted phosphorus layer between a pair of metallic contacts. We observe local variations in the strained exciton peak splitting from $10~\mathrm{\mu eV}$ to $200~\mathrm{\mu eV}$, and obtain scanning microscopy stress maps in good agreement with finite-element-model thermal stress simulations. Our results suggest a potential use of donor bound excitons for in-situ stress sensing, and demonstrate pathways for the miniaturisation of $\mathrm{D^0X}$ photoconductive detection., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for AdS$_3$ solutions of $d=11$ supergravity to preserve ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry in terms of G-structures. Such solutions necessarily support an SU(3)-structure on the internal 8-manifold M$_8$, in terms of which we phrase the conditions for supersymmetry preservation. We use this to derive the local form of all ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetric AdS$_3$ solutions in $d=11$, for which M$_8$ decomposes as a foliation of a 3-sphere over a 5 dimensional base. There are 3 independent classes, 2 of which preserve the small superconformal algebra and one preserving its large counterpart for which M$_5$ contains a second 3-sphere. We show that for each solution with large (4,4) supersymmetry there are two corresponding solutions with small $(4,4)$, one for which M$_5$ maintains its 3-sphere, one where this blows up to $\mathbb{R}^3$ which can be compactified to $\mathbb{T}^3$. The codling moth pest poses a significant threat to global crop production, with potential losses of up to 80% in apple orchards. Special camera-based sensor nodes are deployed in the field to record and transmit images of trapped insects to monitor the presence of the pest. This paper investigates the embedding of computer vision algorithms in the sensor node using a novel State-of-the-Art Microcontroller Unit (MCU), the GreenWaves Technologies' GAP9 System-on-Chip, which combines 10 RISC-V general purposes cores with a convolution hardware accelerator. We compare the performance of a lightweight Viola-Jones detector algorithm with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), MobileNetV3-SSDLite, trained for the pest detection task. On two datasets that differentiate for the distance between the camera sensor and the pest targets, the CNN generalizes better than the other method and achieves a detection accuracy between 83% and 72%. Thanks to the GAP9's CNN accelerator, the CNN inference task takes only 147 ms to process a 320$\times$240 image. Compared to the GAP8 MCU, which only relies on general-purpose cores for processing, we achieved 9.5$\times$ faster inference speed. When running on a 1000 mAh battery at 3.7 V, the estimated lifetime is approximately 199 days, processing an image every 30 seconds. Our study demonstrates that the novel heterogeneous MCU can perform end-to-end CNN inference with an energy consumption of just 4.85 mJ, matching the efficiency of the simpler Viola-Jones algorithm and offering power consumption up to 15$\times$ lower than previous methods. The aim of this paper is to present an alternative formulation of the attention scoring function in translation tasks. Generally speaking, language is deeply structured, and this is reflected in the attention scoring matrix. We exploit this property to define the attention pooling function, taking this aspect into account. In the first chapters, we introduce the attention mechanism in mathematical terms and explain its limitations and alternative formulations. Next, we focus on the experimental session that led to the alternative formulation. Essentially, we guide queries and keys to interact in a specific manner, encoding the distinct roles of attention heads and directing values on where to seek context. In mathematical terms, we can think of this formula as projecting the attention scores matrix, say $H$, onto the space of band matrices with fixed bandwidth. This convex subspace is clearly finite-dimensional and therefore closed. As a consequence, the projection on this space is well-posed and unique. However, at the price of losing the uniqueness of the projection (i.e., the best approximation for $H$), we defined a new space consisting of band matrices plus error sparse matrices. We prove that this is a compact subspace which guarantees the existence of a matrix that best approximates $H$. We conclude the thesis by validating the new formula, namely calculating how well the new formula for attention scores approximates the original one. Additionally, we explore the impact of different parameters such as w (context windows) and num-pos (number of relevant words in a sentence). These analyses provide deeper insights into how languages are processed and translated, revealing nuances in the roles of context and word relevance.

The use of data collection to support decision making through the reduction of uncertainty is ubiquitous in the management, operation, and design of building energy systems. However, no existing studies in the building energy systems literature have quantified the economic benefits of data collection strategies to determine whether they are worth their cost. This work demonstrates that Value of Information analysis (VoI), a Bayesian Decision Analysis framework, provides a suitable methodology for quantifying the benefits of data collection. Three example decision problems in building energy systems are studied: air-source heat pump maintenance scheduling, ventilation scheduling for indoor air quality, and ground-source heat pump system design. Smart meters, occupancy monitoring systems, and ground thermal tests are shown to be economically beneficial for supporting these decisions respectively. Event stereo matching is an emerging technique to estimate depth from neuromorphic cameras; however, events are unlikely to trigger in the absence of motion or the presence of large, untextured regions, making the correspondence problem extremely challenging. Purposely, we propose integrating a stereo event camera with a fixed-frequency active sensor -- e.g., a LiDAR -- collecting sparse depth measurements, overcoming the aforementioned limitations. Such depth hints are used by hallucinating -- i.e., inserting fictitious events -- the stacks or raw input streams, compensating for the lack of information in the absence of brightness changes. With the rise of Embodied Foundation Models (EFMs), most notably Small Language Models (SLMs), adapting Transformers for edge applications has become a very active field of research. However, achieving end-to-end deployment of SLMs on microcontroller (MCU)-class chips without high-bandwidth off-chip main memory access is still an open challenge. In this paper, we demonstrate high-efficiency end-to-end SLM deployment on a multicore RISC-V (RV32) MCU augmented with ML instruction extensions and a hardware neural processing unit (NPU). To automate the exploration of the constrained, multi-dimensional memory vs. computation tradeoffs involved in aggressive SLM deployment on heterogeneous (multicore+NPU) resources, we introduce Deeploy, a novel Deep Neural Network (DNN) compiler, which generates highly-optimized C code requiring minimal runtime support. We demonstrate that Deeploy generates end-to-end code for executing SLMs, fully exploiting the RV32 cores' instruction extensions and the NPU: We achieve leading-edge energy and throughput of \SI{490}{\micro\joule \per Token}, at \SI{340}{Token \per \second} for an SLM trained on the TinyStories dataset, running for the first time on an MCU-class device without external memory., Comment: Accepted for publication at ESWEEK - CASES 2024

One of the challenges for Tiny Machine Learning (tinyML) is keeping up with the evolution of Machine Learning models from Convolutional Neural Networks to Transformers. We address this by leveraging a heterogeneous architectural template coupling RISC-V processors with hardwired accelerators supported by an automated deployment flow. We demonstrate an Attention-based model in a tinyML power envelope with an octa-core cluster coupled with an accelerator for quantized Attention. Speaker identification (SI) determines a speaker's identity based on their spoken utterances. Previous work indicates that SI deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to backdoor attacks. Backdoor attacks involve embedding hidden triggers in DNNs' training data, causing the DNN to produce incorrect output when these triggers are present during inference. This is the first work that explores SI DNNs' vulnerability to backdoor attacks using speakers' emotional prosody, resulting in dynamic, inconspicuous triggers. We conducted a parameter study using three different datasets and DNN architectures to determine the impact of emotions as backdoor triggers on the accuracy of SI systems. Additionally, we have explored the robustness of our attacks by applying defenses like pruning, STRIP-ViTA, and three popular preprocessing techniques: quantization, median filtering, and squeezing. Our findings show that the aforementioned models are prone to our attack, indicating that emotional triggers (sad and neutral prosody) can be effectively used to compromise the integrity of SI systems. However, the results of our pruning experiments suggest potential solutions for reinforcing the models against our attacks, decreasing the attack success rate up to 40%.

We study the two families of AdS$_3\times S^3\times S^2\times \Sigma_2$ solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with small and large $(0,4)$ supersymmetries constructed recently in the literature, in connection with the AdS$_7\times S^2\times I$ solutions to massive Type IIA, to which they asymptote locally. Based on our analysis of various observables, that we study holographically, we propose an interpretation of the first class of solutions as dual to deconstructed 6d (1,0) CFTs dual to AdS$_7$, and of the second class as dual to surface defects in the same 6d theories. We study half-BPS flows in gauged minimal 7d supergravity featured by an AdS$_3\times S^3$ slicing of the metric, supported by a dyonic three-form field. We first present a novel strategy for analytic integration of the BPS equations, which makes use of the integrals of motion. Subsequently, we discuss the suitable choice of integration constants that gives rise to smooth geometries. These flows are asymptotically locally AdS$_7$ in their UV limit, while their IR geometry is AdS$_3\times \mathbb{R}^4$. We then discuss their uplifts to 11d and massive IIA supergravity and observe that they describe one-parameter deformations of their AdS$_7\times S^4$ and AdS$_7\times S^3$ vacua, respectively, their holographic interpretation being as conformal defect CFT$_2$'s within the corresponding dual SCFT$_6$'s. We report the discovery of the transiting planet GJ 238 b, with a radius of $0.566\pm0.014$ R$_{\oplus}$ ($1.064\pm0.026$ times the radius of Mars) and an orbital period of 1.74 day. The transit signal was detected by the TESS mission and designated TOI-486.01. The star's position close to the Southern ecliptic pole allows for almost continuous observations by TESS when it is observing the Southern sky. The host star is an M2.5 dwarf with $V=11.57\pm0.02$ mag, $K=7.030\pm0.023$ mag, a distance of $15.2156\pm0.0030$ pc, a mass of $0.4193_{-0.0098}^{+0.0095}$ M$_{\odot}$, a radius of $0.4314_{-0.0071}^{+0.0075}$ R$_{\odot}$, and an effective temperature of $3{,}485\pm140$ K. We validate the planet candidate by ruling out or rendering highly unlikely each of the false positive scenarios, based on archival data and ground-based follow-up observations. In this paper, we introduce MoRSE (Mixture of RAGs Security Experts), the first specialised AI chatbot for cybersecurity. MoRSE aims to provide comprehensive and complete knowledge about cybersecurity. MoRSE uses two RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) systems designed to retrieve and organize information from multidimensional cybersecurity contexts. MoRSE differs from traditional RAGs by using parallel retrievers that work together to retrieve semantically related information in different formats and structures. Unlike traditional Large Language Models (LLMs) that rely on Parametric Knowledge Bases, MoRSE retrieves relevant documents from Non-Parametric Knowledge Bases in response to user queries. Subsequently, MoRSE uses this information to generate accurate answers. In addition, MoRSE benefits from real-time updates to its knowledge bases, enabling continuous knowledge enrichment without retraining. We have evaluated the effectiveness of MoRSE against other state-of-the-art LLMs, evaluating the system on 600 cybersecurity specific questions. The experimental evaluation has shown that the improvement in terms of relevance and correctness of the answer is more than 10\% compared to known solutions such as GPT-4 and Mixtral 7x8.

We propose a discrete lattice model of the energy of dislocations in three-dimensional crystals which properly accounts for lattice symmetry and geometry, arbitrary harmonic interatomic interactions, elastic deformations and discrete crystallographic slip on the full complement of slip systems of the crystal class. Under the assumption of diluteness, we show that the discrete energy converges, in the sense of $\Gamma$-convergence, to a line-tension energy defined on Volterra line dislocations, regarded as integral vector-valued currents supported on rectifiable curves. Remarkably, the line-tension limit is of the same form as that derived from semi-discrete models of linear elastic dislocations based on a core cutoff regularization. In particular, the line-tension energy follows from a cell relaxation and differs from the classical ansatz, which is quadratic in the Burgers vector.

Given the diverse array of physical systems available for quantum computing and the absence of a well-defined quantum internet protocol stack, the design and optimisation of quantum networking protocols remain largely unexplored. To address this, we introduce an approach that facilitates the establishment of paths capable of delivering end-to-end fidelity above a specified threshold, without requiring detailed knowledge of the quantum network properties, which we call the 'grey box approach'. In this study, we define algorithms that are specific instances of this approach and evaluate them in comparison to Dijkstra shortest path algorithm and a fully knowledge-aware algorithm through simulations. Our results demonstrate that one of the grey box algorithms consistently outperforms the other methods in delivering paths above the fidelity threshold, across various network topologies and the number of source-destination pairs involved, while maintaining significant levels of fairness among the users and being robust to inaccurate estimations of the expected end-to-end fidelity., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

The Remote ID (RID) regulation recently introduced by several aviation authorities worldwide (including the US and EU) forces commercial drones to regularly (max. every second) broadcast plaintext messages on the wireless channel, providing information about the drone identifier and current location, among others. Although these regulations increase the accountability of drone operations and improve traffic management, they allow malicious users to track drones via the disclosed information, possibly leading to drone capture and severe privacy leaks. In this paper, we propose Obfuscated Location disclOsure for RID-enabled drones (OLO-RID), a solution modifying and extending the RID regulation while preserving drones' location privacy. Rather than disclosing the actual drone's location, drones equipped with OLO-RID disclose a differentially private obfuscated location in a mobile scenario. OLO-RID also extends RID messages with encrypted location information, accessible only by authorized entities and valuable to obtain the current drone's location in safety-critical use cases. We design, implement, and deploy OLO-RID on a Raspberry Pi 3 and release the code of our implementation as open-source. We also perform an extensive performance assessment of the runtime overhead of our solution in terms of processing, communication, memory, and energy consumption. We show that OLO-RID can generate RID messages on a constrained device in less than 0.16 s while also requiring a minimal energy toll on a relevant device (0.0236% of energy for a DJI Mini 2). We also evaluate the utility of the proposed approach in the context of three reference use cases involving the drones' location usage, demonstrating minimal performance degradation when trading off location privacy and utility for next-generation RID-compliant drone ecosystems., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. Nano-sized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are ideal candidates for flying Internet-of-Things smart sensors to collect information in narrow spaces. This requires ultra-fast navigation under very tight memory/computation constraints. The PULP-Dronet convolutional neural network (CNN) enables autonomous navigation running aboard a nano-UAV at 19 frame/s, at the cost of a large memory footprint of 320 kB -- and with drone control in complex scenarios hindered by the disjoint training of collision avoidance and steering capabilities. In this work, we distill a novel family of CNNs with better capabilities than PULP-Dronet, but memory footprint reduced by up to 168x (down to 2.9 kB), achieving an inference rate of up to 139 frame/s; we collect a new open-source unified collision/steering 66 k images dataset for more robust navigation; and we perform a thorough in-field analysis of both PULP-Dronet and our tiny CNNs running on a commercially available nano-UAV. Our tiniest CNN, called Tiny-PULP-Dronet v3, navigates with a 100% success rate a challenging and never-seen-before path, composed of a narrow obstacle-populated corridor and a 180{\deg} turn, at a maximum target speed of 0.5 m/s. We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

We introduce a natural concept of positive definiteness for bundle maps between Fell bundles over (possibly different) discrete groups and describe several examples. Such maps induce completely positive maps between the associated full cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras in a functorial way. Under the assumption that the kernel of the homomorphism connecting the groups under consideration is amenable, they also induce completely positive maps between the associated reduced cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we define an approximation property for a Fell bundle over a discrete group which generalizes Exel's approximation property and still implies the weak containment property. One of the most impactful measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in its early first years was the lockdown, implemented by governments to reduce physical contact among people and minimize opportunities for the virus to spread. As people were compelled to limit their physical interactions and stay at home, they turned to online social platforms to alleviate feelings of loneliness. Ego networks represent how people organize their relationships due to human cognitive constraints that impose limits on meaningful interactions among people. Physical contacts were disrupted during the lockdown, causing socialization to shift entirely online, leading to a shift in socialization into online platforms. Our research aimed to investigate the impact of lockdown measures on online ego network structures potentially caused by the increase of cognitive expenses in online social networks. In particular, we examined a large Twitter dataset of users, covering 7 years of their activities. We found that during the lockdown, there was an increase in network sizes and a richer structure in social circles, with relationships becoming more intimate. Despite its well-known security issues, the Controller Area Network (CAN) is still the main technology for in-vehicle communications. Attackers posing as diagnostic services or accessing the CAN bus can threaten the drivers' location privacy to know the exact location at a certain point in time or to infer the visited areas. This represents a serious threat to users' privacy, but also an advantage for police investigations to gather location-based evidence. In this paper, we present On Path Diagnostic - Intrusion \& Inference (OPD-II), a novel path inference attack leveraging a physical car model and a map matching algorithm to infer the path driven by a car based on CAN bus data. Differently from available attacks, our approach only requires the attacker to know the initial location and heading of the victim's car and is not limited by the availability of training data, road configurations, or the need to access other victim's devices (e.g., smartphones). We implement our attack on a set of four different cars and a total number of 41 tracks in different road and traffic scenarios. We achieve an average of 95% accuracy on reconstructing the coordinates of the recorded path by leveraging a dynamic map-matching algorithm that outperforms the 75% and 89% accuracy values of other proposals while removing their set of assumptions.

The "ego network of words" model captures structural properties in language production associated with cognitive constraints. While previous research focused on the layer-based structure and its semantic properties, this paper argues that an essential element, the concept of an active network, is missing. The active part of the ego network of words only includes words that are regularly used by individuals, akin to the ego networks in the social domain, where the active part includes relationships regularly nurtured by individuals and hence demanding cognitive effort. In this work, we define a methodology for extracting the active part of the ego network of words and validate it using interview transcripts and tweets. The robustness of our method to varying input data sizes and temporal stability is demonstrated. We also demonstrate that without the active network concept (and a tool for properly extracting the active network from data), the "ego network of words" model is not able to properly estimate the cognitive effort involved and it becomes vulnerable to the amount of data considered (leading to the disappearance of the layered structure in large datasets). Our results are well-aligned with prior analyses of the ego network of words, where the limitation of the data collected led automatically (and implicitly) to approximately consider the active part of the network only. Generative models are gaining significant attention as potential catalysts for a novel industrial revolution. Since automated sample generation can be useful to solve privacy and data scarcity issues that usually affect learned biometric models, such technologies became widely spread in this field. In this paper, we assess the vulnerabilities of generative machine learning models concerning identity protection by designing and testing an identity inference attack on fingerprint datasets created by means of a generative adversarial network. The rise of IT-dependent operations in modern organizations has heightened their vulnerability to cyberattacks. As a growing number of organizations include smart, interconnected devices in their systems to automate their processes, the attack surface becomes much bigger, and the complexity and frequency of attacks pose a significant threat. Consequently, organizations have been compelled to seek innovative approaches to mitigate the menaces inherent in their infrastructure. In response, considerable research efforts have been directed towards creating effective solutions for sharing Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI). Current information-sharing methods lack privacy safeguards, leaving organizations vulnerable to leaks of both proprietary and confidential data. To tackle this problem, we designed a novel framework called SeCTIS (Secure Cyber Threat Intelligence Sharing), integrating Swarm Learning and Blockchain technologies to enable businesses to collaborate, preserving the privacy of their CTI data. Moreover, our approach provides a way to assess the data and model quality, and the trustworthiness of all the participants leveraging some validators through Zero Knowledge Proofs. An extensive experimental campaign demonstrates our framework's correctness and performance, and the detailed attack model discusses its robustness against attacks in the context of data and model quality.

Assessing the capabilities of large multimodal models (LMMs) often requires the creation of ad-hoc evaluations. Currently, building new benchmarks requires tremendous amounts of manual work for each specific analysis. This makes the evaluation process tedious and costly. In this paper, we present APEx, Automatic Programming of Experiments, the first framework for automatic benchmarking of LMMs. Given a research question expressed in natural language, APEx leverages a large language model (LLM) and a library of pre-specified tools to generate a set of experiments for the model at hand, and progressively compile a scientific report. The report drives the testing procedure: based on the current status of the investigation, APEx chooses which experiments to perform and whether the results are sufficient to draw conclusions. Finally, the LLM refines the report, presenting the results to the user in natural language. Thanks to its modularity, our framework is flexible and extensible as new tools become available. We report the discovery and validation of HD 21520 b, a transiting planet found with TESS and orbiting a bright G dwarf (V=9.2, $T_{eff} = 5871 \pm 62$ K, $R_{\star} = 1.04\pm 0.02\, R_{\odot}$). HD 21520 b was originally alerted as a system (TOI-4320) consisting of two planet candidates with periods of 703.6 and 46.4 days. However, our analysis supports instead a single-planet system with an orbital period of $25.1292\pm0.0001$ days and radius of $2.70 \pm 0.09\, R_{\oplus}$. Three full transits in sectors 4, 30 and 31 match this period and have transit depths and durations in agreement with each other, as does a partial transit in sector 3. We also observe transits using CHEOPS and LCOGT. SOAR and Gemini high-resolution imaging do not indicate the presence of any nearby companions, and MINERVA-Australis and CORALIE radial velocities rule out an on-target spectroscopic binary. Additionally, we use ESPRESSO radial velocities to obtain a tentative mass measurement of $7.9^{+3.2}_{-3.0}\, M_{\oplus}$, with a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit of 17.7 $M_{\oplus}$. Due to the bright nature of its host and likely significant gas envelope of the planet, HD 21520 b is a promising candidate for further mass measurements and for atmospheric characterization., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Optimal deployment of deep neural networks (DNNs) on state-of-the-art Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) is crucial for tiny machine learning (TinyML) at the edge. The complexity of these SoCs makes deployment non-trivial, as they typically contain multiple heterogeneous compute cores with limited, programmer-managed memory to optimize latency and energy efficiency. We propose HTVM - a compiler that merges TVM with DORY to maximize the utilization of heterogeneous accelerators and minimize data movements. HTVM allows deploying the MLPerf(TM) Tiny suite on DIANA, an SoC with a RISC-V CPU, and digital and analog compute-in-memory AI accelerators, at 120x improved performance over plain TVM deployment., Comment: Presented at DAC2023. Hydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuel, however storing it efficiently poses challenges. One promising solution is to adsorb hydrogen on solid materials demonstrating quasi-molecular bonding with hydrogen. The hydrogen adsorption energy can be tuned by changing the morphology or stoichiometry of bimetallic nanoparticles. Here we used complementary techniques to unveil the chemical compositional and morphological transformation undergone by PdxNi100-x nanoparticles during H2 adsorption. Our findings reveal NiO-rich shell and Pd-rich core as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. During hydrogen adsorption, which mainly occurs on Pd atoms, the Pd-rich core fragments into small pockets, increasing its surface area. This process is more pronounced for nanoparticles with lower Pd loading, emphasizing the role of NiO. These results shed light on the atomic changes occurring in the PdxNi100-x nanoparticles during hydrogen adsorption and can be applicable on multi-metallic systems to improve hydrogen storage properties.

This paper presents a novel general-purpose stereo and depth data fusion paradigm that mimics the active stereo principle by replacing the unreliable physical pattern projector with a depth sensor. It works by projecting virtual patterns consistent with the scene geometry onto the left and right images acquired by a conventional stereo camera, using the sparse hints obtained from a depth sensor, to facilitate the visual correspondence. Purposely, any depth sensing device can be seamlessly plugged into our framework, enabling the deployment of a virtual active stereo setup in any possible environment and overcoming the severe limitations of physical pattern projection, such as the limited working range and environmental conditions. Exhaustive experiments on indoor and outdoor datasets featuring both long and close range, including those providing raw, unfiltered depth hints from off-the-shelf depth sensors, highlight the effectiveness of our approach in notably boosting the robustness and accuracy of algorithms and deep stereo without any code modification and even without re-training. Additionally, we assess the performance of our strategy on active stereo evaluation datasets with conventional pattern projection. Indeed, in all these scenarios, our virtual pattern projection paradigm achieves state-of-the-art performance. We explore the potential of spatial-photonic Ising machines (SPIMs) to address computationally intensive Ising problems that employ low-rank and circulant coupling matrices. Our results indicate that the performance of SPIMs is critically affected by the rank and precision of the coupling matrices. By developing and assessing advanced decomposition techniques, we expand the range of problems SPIMs can solve, overcoming the limitations of traditional Mattis-type matrices. Our approach accommodates a diverse array of coupling matrices, including those with inherently low ranks, applicable to complex NP-complete problems. We explore the practical benefits of low-rank approximation in optimization tasks, particularly in financial optimization, to demonstrate the real-world applications of SPIMs. Finally, we evaluate the computational limitations imposed by SPIM hardware precision and suggest strategies to optimize the performance of these systems within these constraints., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

The simulation of many complex phenomena in engineering and science requires solving expensive, high-dimensional systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). To circumvent this, reduced-order models (ROMs) have been developed to speed up computations. However, when governing equations are unknown or partially known, typically ROMs lack interpretability and reliability of the predicted solutions. In this work we present a data-driven, non-intrusive framework for building ROMs where the latent variables and dynamics are identified in an interpretable manner and uncertainty is quantified. Starting from a limited amount of high-dimensional, noisy data the proposed framework constructs an efficient ROM by leveraging variational autoencoders for dimensionality reduction along with a newly introduced, variational version of sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy), which we refer to as Variational Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (VINDy). In detail, the method consists of Variational Encoding of Noisy Inputs (VENI) to identify the distribution of reduced coordinates. Simultaneously, we learn the distribution of the coefficients of a pre-determined set of candidate functions by VINDy. Once trained offline, the identified model can be queried for new parameter instances and new initial conditions to compute the corresponding full-time solutions. The probabilistic setup enables uncertainty quantification as the online testing consists of Variational Inference naturally providing Certainty Intervals (VICI). In this work we showcase the effectiveness of the newly proposed VINDy method in identifying interpretable and accurate dynamical system for the R\"ossler system with different noise intensities and sources. Then the performance of the overall method - named VENI, VINDy, VICI - is tested on PDE benchmarks including structural mechanics and fluid dynamics.

Macroscopic properties of materials stem from fundamental atomic-scale details, yet for insulators, resolving surface structures remains a challenge. The basal (0001) plane of ${\alpha}$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ was imaged with noncontact atomic force microscopy with an atomically-defined tip apex. The surface forms a complex $({\sqrt31} {\times} {\sqrt31})R{\pm}9{\deg}$ reconstruction. The lateral positions of the individual O and Al surface atoms come directly from experiment; how these connect to the underlying crystal bulk was determined based on computational modeling. Before the restructuring, the surface Al atoms assume an unfavorable, threefold planar coordination; the reconstruction allows a rehybridization with subsurface O that leads to a substantial energy gain. The reconstructed surface remains stoichiometric, Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$.

Malware has become a formidable threat as it has been growing exponentially in number and sophistication, thus, it is imperative to have a solution that is easy to implement, reliable, and effective. While recent research has introduced deep learning multi-feature fusion algorithms, they lack a proper explanation. In this work, we investigate the power of fusing Convolutional Neural Network models trained on different modalities of a malware executable. We are proposing a novel multimodal fusion algorithm, leveraging three different visual malware features: Grayscale Image, Entropy Graph, and SimHash Image, with which we conducted exhaustive experiments independently on each feature and combinations of all three of them using fusion operators such as average, maximum, add, and concatenate for effective malware detection and classification. The proposed strategy has a detection rate of 1.00 (on a scale of 0-1) in identifying malware in the given dataset. We explained its interpretability with visualization techniques such as t-SNE and Grad-CAM. Experimental results show the model works even for a highly imbalanced dataset. We also assessed the effectiveness of the proposed method on obfuscated malware and achieved state-of-the-art results. The proposed methodology is more reliable as our findings prove VGG16 model can detect and classify malware in a matter of seconds in real-time.

Sub-Neptunes with $2-3R_\oplus$ are intermediate in size between rocky planets and Neptune-sized planets. The orbital properties and bulk compositions of transiting sub-Neptunes provide clues to the formation and evolution of close-in small planets. In this paper, we present the discovery and follow-up of four sub-Neptunes orbiting M dwarfs (TOI-782, TOI-1448, TOI-2120, and TOI-2406), three of which were newly validated by ground-based follow-up observations and statistical analyses. TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b have radii of $R_\mathrm{p} = 2.740^{+0.082}_{-0.079}\,R_\oplus$, $2.769^{+0.073}_{-0.068}\,R_\oplus$, $2.120\pm0.067\,R_\oplus$, and $2.830^{+0.068}_{-0.066}\,R_\oplus$ and orbital periods of $P = 8.02$, $8.11$, $5.80$, and $3.08$\,days, respectively. Doppler monitoring with Subaru/InfraRed Doppler instrument led to 2$\sigma$ upper limits on the masses of $<19.1\ M_\oplus$, $<19.5\ M_\oplus$, $<6.8\ M_\oplus$, and $<15.6\ M_\oplus$ for TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b, respectively. The mass-radius relationship of these four sub-Neptunes testifies to the existence of volatile material in their interiors. These four sub-Neptunes, which are located above the so-called ``radius valley'', are likely to retain a significant atmosphere and/or an icy mantle on the core, such as a water world. We find that at least three of the four sub-Neptunes (TOI-782 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b) orbiting M dwarfs older than 1 Gyr, are likely to have eccentricities of $e \sim 0.2-0.3$. The smart grid represents a pivotal innovation in modernizing the electricity sector, offering an intelligent, digitalized energy network capable of optimizing energy delivery from source to consumer. It hence represents the backbone of the energy sector of a nation. Due to its central role, the availability of the smart grid is paramount and is hence necessary to have in-depth control of its operations and safety. To this aim, researchers developed multiple solutions to assess the smart grid's stability and guarantee that it operates in a safe state. Artificial intelligence and Machine learning algorithms have proven to be effective measures to accurately predict the smart grid's stability. Despite the presence of known adversarial attacks and potential solutions, currently, there exists no standardized measure to protect smart grids against this threat, leaving them open to new adversarial attacks. In this paper, we propose GAN-GRID a novel adversarial attack targeting the stability prediction system of a smart grid tailored to real-world constraints. Our findings reveal that an adversary armed solely with the stability model's output, devoid of data or model knowledge, can craft data classified as stable with an Attack Success Rate (ASR) of 0.99. Also by manipulating authentic data and sensor values, the attacker can amplify grid issues, potentially undetected due to a compromised stability prediction system. These results underscore the imperative of fortifying smart grid security mechanisms against adversarial manipulation to uphold system stability and reliability.

Studying the relative orientations of the orbits of exoplanets and wide-orbiting binary companions (semimajor axis greater than 100 AU) can shed light on how planets form and evolve in binary systems. Previous observations by multiple groups discovered a possible alignment between the orbits of visual binaries and the exoplanets that reside in them. In this study, using data from \textit{Gaia} DR3 and TESS, we confirm the existence of an alignment between the orbits of small planets $(R<6 R_\oplus)$ and binary systems with semimajor axes below 700 AU ($p=10^{-6}$). However, we find no statistical evidence for alignment between planet and binary orbits for binary semimajor axes greater than 700 AU, and no evidence for alignment of large, closely-orbiting planets (mostly hot Jupiters) and binaries at any separation. The lack of orbital alignment between our large planet sample and their binary companions appears significantly different from our small planet sample, even taking into account selection effects. Therefore, we conclude that any alignment between wide-binaries and our sample of large planets (predominantly hot Jupiters) is probably not as strong as what we observe for small planets in binaries with semimajor axes less than 700 AU. The difference in the alignment distribution of hot Jupiters and smaller planets may be attributed to the unique evolutionary mechanisms occuring in systems that form hot Jupiters, including potentially destabilizing secular resonances that onset as the protoplanetary disk dissipates and high-eccentricity migration occurring after the disk is gone., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submitted to AJ.
