Middle leaders were required to navigate the complexities of educational disruption and respond to internal and external demands throughout the pandemic. This shifting educational context necessitated a sensemaking process to better understand and act on the issues which gave rise to ambiguities in their school environment. This study investigated the sensemaking processes employed by 27 middle leaders from 20 government schools in Qatar, at a time when COVID-related restrictions had been lifted and face-to-face learning had resumed. To collect and analyze data, Q-methodology was applied. A 34-statement Q-sample was developed based on a proposed conceptual framework of sensemaking during times of disruption which included three dimensions: intrapersonal, relational, and institutional. Q-factor analysis revealed two significantly different viewpoints regarding how participants enacted certain practices in response to educational disruption. These were (1) sensemaking as a relational endeavor and (2) sensemaking as an agentic endeavor. The two viewpoints differed in sources of sensemaking and its mechanisms. Sensemaking offered a useful theoretical construct as it revealed middle leaders' perceptions and enactments, and their struggles in maintaining a balance between structure and agency. The study has implications for middle leadership policy and practices in times of educational disruption and beyond, with its distinctive methodological and contextual contributions.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the presence of systems thinking after an educational proposal on climate sustainability based on reflection and video creation. To evaluate this competency, an evaluation rubric was constructed. Design/methodology/approach: This research is a case study with a mixed approach. It was carried out with 82 future teachers of Primary Education, making content analysis of the videos made. For the design of the rubric, a specific review of the literature was conducted. Findings: The results showed that trainee teachers can identify, relate and understand interconnected processes, but have difficulties in thinking temporally or in understanding the hidden dimensions of the system. The results reveal how the development of systems thinking in the Climate Change framework is a complex learning process. The rubric created allowed us to systematize the evaluation by making it possible to assess the subskills involved. Originality/value: To improve the development of systemic thinking, using real data linked to the consequences of this problem and ICT applications that foster an approximation to future realities is suggested. In addition, conscious and fair decision-making should be promoted on the basis of a transformative education that favors this thinking in interaction with other key competences in sustainability. The innovative rubric allows the evaluation of systemic thinking skills for the study of climate change, conceptualized from the interrelationships of the natural, social and economic dimensions and from its implications for life, on different geographical and temporal levels.

This study delves into the complex relationship between storytelling and historical understanding. Focused on how lower-secondary students employ narrative discourse in writing, it examines the extent to which their storytelling aids or limits historical comprehension. Drawing on systemic-functional linguistics and history education theories, the study highlights that while narratives might encourage personalized perspective-taking, thus potentially undermining objective historical analysis, they also reveal a more complex interplay between narrative form and historical insight than previously recognized. Through a comparative evaluation of student texts, it explores how certain types of narratives--descriptive, evocative, and emotive--interact with different foci of historical understanding. The analysis underscores the challenge of integrating broader historical analysis within personal narratives but also showcases successful examples of this integration. The article proposes strategies for educators to leverage storytelling more effectively, emphasizing the need for linguistic scaffolding to enhance students' historical narratives.

Background: More students with a bachelor's degree in psychology are seeking graduate studies, though many lack knowledge about the admission process. Objective: We created a brief educational presentation to increase student knowledge of the application process, positive outcome expectations for obtaining a master's degree in psychology, and intention to apply. Method: We recruited N=55 undergraduate psychology majors at a public university in Texas. We randomly assigned participants to either a 52-min written or video version of the educational presentation. Results: Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that participants increased their positive outcome expectations for a master's degree in psychology and increased their perceived knowledge of the application process. Our qualitative content analysis revealed improvements in participants' objective knowledge of what to include in a curriculum vitae and personal statement, who to ask for a letter of recommendation, and what resources exist for funding graduate school. Conclusions: Professors could consider using evidence-based, brief educational presentations in mentoring undergraduate students on career goals including graduate study in psychology. Teaching Implications: Additional training may be required to help educational professionals to incorporate evidence-based career planning during key stages of students' undergraduate psychology study.

This study aimed to understand pre-service teachers' motivations and learning psychologies in language teaching. The study used a phenomenology pattern, a qualitative research method, to gather pre-service teachers' views about language teaching, motivations and learning psychologies during translation activities. The study group consisted of 42 language department undergraduate students from the Education Faculty of a private university in TRNC in the 2022-2023 academic year, selected using the criterion sampling method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The NVIVO-R1 qualitative data analysis program was used for categorisation and coding in the data analysis. The findings revealed that translation studies motivate and improve comprehension--explanation skills, increasing academic success, positively impacting learning psychology, and reducing anxiety. Effective teaching methods and motivation were influential factors in teaching language to pre-service teachers. The study also found that reinforcers, intrinsic motivation, exemplification--association, measurable goals, teaching environment, teaching method and applied learning significantly affect the language teaching process and academic success. It was concluded that pre-service teachers are attentive to their professional careers and motivations. Additionally, the study revealed that learning the historical development of the language and different types of translation positively contributed to the motivation levels, academic achievement and language learning knowledge and skills of pre-service teachers. Regarding grammar teaching, pre-service teachers highlighted the importance of focusing on the social and interactional dimensions of language in addition to grammar learning. They expressed that language learning anxiety stemmed from insufficient practice. Finally, the study suggested that the language-learning problems of pre-service teachers could be attributed to the neglect of translation studies.

This grounded theory study explored how primary-grade teachers perceive and enact dialogic English Language Arts (ELA) comprehension pedagogy in the novel context of pandemic-induced digital learning. The study involved nine diverse rural primary teachers teaching digitally during the coronavirus disease pandemic. The researchers followed a constructivist, postmodern orientation to co-construct substantive theory with the knowledge of participating teachers. The researchers conducted two rounds of virtual interviews and collected digital artifacts of ELA comprehension instruction. Qualitative data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis to address teacher perceptions and enactments of digital dialogic comprehension instruction. The emergent substantive theory represents connected, iterative processes of teachers perceiving and enacting dialogic, digital instruction. First, teachers espoused a dialogic stance toward ELA instruction based on their beliefs in various comprehension paradigms, diverse funds of knowledge, and multiplicity of voices in discourse. Relatedly, teachers responded to particularities of virtual contexts, digital discourses, and pandemic times to enact dialogic ELA comprehension instruction through a reconstruction of literacy pedagogies. Implications for research and practice are discussed, including the need for ongoing negotiation of dialogic pedagogy in diverse instructional contexts, to cultivate teachers' dialogic literacy practices in locally and culturally responsive ways.

Teaching with virtual worlds provides new means for collaborative learning but creates challenges for teachers in terms of IT skills. To address these challenges, we developed a teaching model for using virtual worlds in classroom practices and applied it to Minecraft in several rounds of design-based research experiments. Our conceptual framework combines ideas from software engineering (sociotechnical congruence) and social sciences (intersubjectivity and emergence). Empirically, we addressed the problem of how shared understanding evolves in computer-mediated learning activities. We video-recorded classroom activities and analyzed them using interaction analysis. The teaching model engaged the students in two interdependent processes, referred to as objects: (1) a social object (discussions) that led to a shared knowledge object (video-recorded role-play) and (2) a technology object (Minecraft buildings) for staging the role-play. Our findings include an empirical phenomenon that we call emergent group understanding, which arose from the complex social interactions between social and technology objects when Minecraft was used as a virtual world in a social studies classroom. This revealed two connected subprocesses: (1) a spontaneous act of providing information to assist learners in contextualizing their actions and interactions against a common background, and (2) setting localized goals to guide future actions and interactions. This finding extends previous research by identifying fine-grained processes of intersubjectivity that contribute to collaborative learning. More generally, our teaching model addresses the problem of balancing creative and instructional learning goals.

In this paper, and as a tribute to our friend and collaborator Barbara White, we explore how Generative AI (GenAI) technology can create stimulating new learning environments that support complex sense-making activities. We present a case study of expert use of a chat-based generative AI tool to examine the feasibility of using human-computer collaborative interactions to support metacognition and sociometacognition, i.e., knowledge about, awareness of, and ability to regulate individual (meta) and collective (sociometa) cognition. Our questions are: (RQ1) Is it possible for human-GenAI collaborative interactions to support metacognition, and (RQ2) Is it possible for them to support sociometacognition, i.e., knowledge about, awareness of, and ability to regulate individual (meta) and collective (sociometa) cognition. Our initial findings, though limited by the exploratory, case-based methods used, indicate the promise of GenAI as a valuable social interaction and cultural simulation tool for learners to practice collective sensemaking skills. Although the limitations of chat-based GenAI technologies, including their tendency to provide definitive answers unsupported by evidence, are worth mentioning, our findings contribute to the ongoing conversations around how to develop technologies to support learners' argumentation practices. Accordingly, this study has important implications for future research and practice on using chat-based GenAI as a partner for students to practice the knowledge and skills connected to argumentation and scientific claims, especially in larger courses or broader audiences.

We offer a new angle to explain the comprehension of mathematical infinity. We use Action-Process-Object-Schema (APOS) theory to explore the construction of different aspects of the cognitive Object related to this notion. We focus our attention on different ways of interacting with infinity, and how to act on infinite entities. Our aim is to shed light on the nature of mental constructions that take place when individuals deal with mathematical infinity. An infinite union of finite subsets of N provides the context for our theoretical analysis and the design of interviews conducted with graduate students and instructors. In this study we identify three types of Actions with different complexity levels. When these Actions are performed, they lead to the construction of different facets of the associated Object. We question the construction of an Object conception in infinity-related situations and offer an explanation that might change the way we think about the learning of certain mathematical concepts. We discuss the implications of our research for the advancement of APOS theory. We also offer pedagogical suggestions related to the comprehension of mathematical infinity.

The significance of social justice in education has become increasingly important, as education plays a crucial role in empowering individuals and fostering a dynamic environment that promotes awareness of social justice issues. This study focuses on exploring social justice education (SJE) within the context of Türkiye, where research in this area is relatively limited, particularly in terms of classroom-based investigations. This qualitative study adopted the case study design and facilitates as an extracurricular activity focusing on sustainable development goals, given the absence of a predefined curriculum or specific lesson plans for SJE. The study involved 15 students from a state university preparatory English class and utilized diverse online resources. The study's results indicated a significant transformative influence, specifically in enhancing the comprehension of the scope of social justice and fostering critical thinking abilities. The implications of the study are discussed in detail.

This study explored a middle school science teacher's curricular sensemaking in interaction with their use of an educative storyline curriculum, aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, that was intentionally designed for more opportunities for students' scientific sensemaking. Using a phenomenological case study methodology, we examined how the focal teacher perceived and resolved (un)certainties in their understanding that emerged in their interaction with the curriculum (i.e., their curricular sensemaking), and how the teachers' curricular sensemaking impacted opportunities for students' scientific sensemaking. Findings served to expand our notions of how teachers engage in curricular sensemaking, when this sensemaking occurs, and what teachers make sense of as they experience a new, reform-oriented curriculum for the first time. In particular, the focal teacher found two types of (un)certainty to be salient at various time points during his curriculum use: (un)certainty around students' scientific sensemaking through particular science practices and (un)certainty about how to navigate the storyline curriculum using students' ideas to drive learning forward. Cutting across these types of (un)certainty, our findings suggest the need to (1) support teachers in problematizing their own understandings about particular science practices and the extent to which their previous instruction aligns with reform-oriented conceptualizations of those practices, (2) build teachers' capacity to differentiate between various causes of student discomfort and uncertainty so that students' needs and scientific sensemaking goals can be attended to simultaneously, and (3) provide teachers with opportunities to consider how they might use a variety of participation structures to move learning forward while preserving students' rights and responsibilities for the scientific sensemaking.

Despite the ideological and political support of inclusive education for students with disabilities in U.S schools, the interpretation of the concept of inclusion is still vague and disputed. This article proposes a continuum model of inclusion based on current research, policies, and practice. The inclusion continuum model was developed to provide all stakeholders including practitioners, school leaders, policy makers, and researchers with a common lexicon that will allow them to discuss inclusion for all students with disabilities through a shared understanding that may allow for more insightful student placement decisions. Quality indicators for the model are described that can be used by stakeholders and decision makers to identify current inclusion practices and to provide guidance for how inclusive practices can be implemented most effectively and equitably for all students. The article also provides organizational guidance for the systemic changes necessary for successful inclusion implementation.

Background: We are a research team of clinical, academic and advocacy-based researchers with and without learning disabilities, working on the "Humanising Healthcare" (for people with learning disabilities) project. The project is dedicated to finding and sharing healthcare practices that enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities. As part of our ethics applications to access National Health Service study sites for fieldwork, we worked together to write guiding principles for co-producing research ethics with researchers with learning disabilities. In this paper, we introduce these Participatory Ethics Good Practice Guidelines and reflect on our collaboration. Methods: We reflect on developing the Participatory Ethics Good Practice Guidelines. These guidelines were developed during online co-production meetings with our full research team, including advocacy-based organisation researchers, clinical researchers and university researchers. We considered consent, understanding research, and understanding research methods during the development of these Guidelines. Findings: We present ten guidelines for co-producing research with people with learning disabilities. Conclusions: Our findings may be helpful to researchers with learning disabilities, university and clinical researchers, funders, and those who work in research governance (e.g., ethics committees and university research departments).

Although research on the home literacy environment and its impact on early literacy has long focused on mothers, the past decade has seen a shift in scholarly attention to the role of fathers. Building on this shift, we examined whether the nature of parent-child interactions during shared storybook reading varies with parent gender, child gender and the interaction between the two, and we analysed whether possible differences in the nature of mother- and father-child interactions are related to story comprehension. We made video observations of mothers and fathers within 36 relatively highly educated families reading a storybook with their kindergartener (age 4 - 5) and registered the use of cognitively challenging (i.e. decontextualized) talk during these activities. After each shared reading session, we additionally administered a test assessing children's understanding of the story being read. Two-way mixed ANOVA's revealed no effects of parent gender or child gender on either the use of cognitively challenging talk or children's story comprehension, nor did we find interaction effects of parent and child gender. The extent of cognitively challenging talk was significantly correlated to children's comprehension scores for fathers, but not for mothers. This correlation seems to have masked another association, however: when correlations were computed separately for girls and boys, we found that the proportion of cognitively challenging utterances of both parents was correlated to comprehension scores for boys, but not for girls. The absence of parent gender effects provides further insights into the way mothers and fathers shape interactions during shared reading, but also stresses the need for studies with larger, more diverse samples. The observation that more frequent use of cognitively challenging talk was paralleled by better story comprehension for boys invites further research on the specific effects of shared reading for boys.

Learning science requires students to conceptualize complex scientific concepts, discover scientific facts, and share ideas with others. In this process, scientific vocabulary and language of science help students develop their understanding of science. Given the interlink between language and conceptual development, the current study aimed to improve seventh-grade students' scientific vocabulary and communicative interactions using teaching materials designed for the "cell and divisions" subject. Through an embedded mixed research design, the study was conducted with 31 (21 girls, 10 boys) students (aged 13-14 years) drawn from a middle school in the city of Trabzon, Türkiye. A scientific vocabulary test, observation form, and video recordings were used to collect data. The findings showed significant improvements in students' scientific vocabulary and communicative interactions. Future studies should examine the effect of students' scientific vocabulary on communicative development.

Purpose: Investigate first- to third-graders' understandings of the police. Design/methodology/approach: Phenomenography is used to analyze elementary students' understandings of the police as a social institution Findings: The results indicate three qualitatively different ways of understanding the police. The police as: attributes, activities and as a part of the democratic welfare state. Practical implications: Civics teaching that aims to develop students' understandings of the police can benefit from taking the three different ways of understanding into consideration.

An increasing number of K-12 schools and educational organizations in the U.S. emphasize Global Citizenship Education (GCE) in their curricula. As a kind of social studies education, GCE is often marketed as an effective means to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to succeed in our unpredictable, challenging future. However, there is little research on how students, the target audience, perceive and may be influenced by GCE. As such, this study explores how transnational high school students in the U.S. respond to the GCE to which they are exposed and whether and how these views differ by their gender, racial, and socioeconomic identities. Through descriptive statistics, the data show that when students engaged with GCE, they (1) perceived themselves to learn more skills and conceptual understandings rather than factual knowledge, (2) perceived their schools' formal curricula and diversity at school to contribute most to their learning, and (3) were influenced to change more in their thinking, not actions. These findings raise questions about how to balance teaching skills and knowledge, as well as GCE's challenge in promoting critical action. Further, based on t-tests and ANOVA, the data show that girls perceived themselves to learn more global citizenship at school, that more aspects of school contributed to their GCE, and that GCE influenced their lives more significantly, compared with boys. While the study did not find statistically significant differences in participant perspectives based on socioeconomic status, it did show that in terms of racial differences, Asian transnational students saw themselves as being the least influenced by GCE, compared with White and other students of Color. Given these findings, further research is required to explore how GCE may be implemented more equitably for diverse students.

This study aimed to identify science teacher candidates' mental structures about the concept of the atom. This study included 120 science teacher candidates who were chosen using the convenience sampling method. This research is a phenomenological study. The data on students' mental models of the atom was collected using a metaphor form and an open-ended question form. Forms were utilized to collect written feedback from teaching candidates. The research data were subjected to content analysis. In addition, the MAXQDA application was utilized to assess and generate categorization. As a result of the research, science teacher candidates' mental structures about the concept of the atom were divided into six major categories. It has been discovered that atom models are most vividly represented in the mental structures of science teacher candidates while addressing the concept of the atom. Then, mental structures relating to the atom's structural properties, definition or conceptual explanation, historical process, subatomic particles, and functional function arose in that order. When the codes in these categories were reviewed in detail, it was discovered that the explanations provided were extremely cursory.

Academic writing presents a range of challenges for students, particularly those enrolled in distance university institutions. These challenges encompass various facets such as understanding citation and referencing, developing a distinctive writer's voice, mastering academic discourse, paraphrasing, summarising, and adhering to academic conventions. Notably, deficiencies in academic writing skills often trace back to inadequate preparation during high school education, potentially leading to qualification deferment and high dropout rates. To tackle these challenges, podcasts and vodcasts emerged as essential tools to bridge academic gaps, catering to diverse learning styles and offering flexibility beyond traditional teaching methods. However, the efficacy of supplemental multimedia tools warrants exploration, considering uncertainties regarding student acceptance. Thus, this study aimed to identify accessibility challenges, to reduce existing barriers and enhance accessibility in open distant institutions. Utilising qualitative research methodologies, including focus group discussions and literature analysis, data collection was conducted. The study drew upon Moore's theory of transactional distance and Garrison et al.'s community of inquiry framework to create collaborative online interactions and meaningful lecturer-student engagement, culminating in the construction of new knowledge. Findings revealed that students did not encounter accessibility challenges and expressed preference for shorter podcasts and vodcasts. These multimedia formats alleviated boredom, clarified complex concepts, prevented monotony, enhanced attention and comprehension, stimulated interest, facilitated active learning, and accommodated various learning styles. Podcasts and vodcasts reduced transactional distance and created a sense of community. Contrary to prevailing literature, students did not encounter accessibility challenges, shifting the focus towards shorter, high-quality multimedia content rather than accessibility concerns.

The goal of this quasi-experimental study was to assess the effects of Dual-Coding Theory on domain-specific vocabulary and comprehension in a 5th grade social studies classroom. The pretest/posttest design research was conducted in a rural elementary school (N = 49). Twenty-three students participated in an intervention of dual-coding based strategies. This study sought to determine if the instructional strategies that incorporated dual coding were more effective than traditional social studies strategies to promote domain-specific vocabulary learning and academic achievement. In addition to the measures for vocabulary and comprehension, students completed a motivational questionnaire on their view of social studies to ascertain if their motivation and enjoyment changed after the experiment. ANCOVA analyses showed consistent, statistically significant results indicating that dual coding strategies benefitted students in the area of academic achievement. Dual coding strategies appeared to have had a positive impact on student vocabulary learning and academic achievement.

Professionals in the authors' setting -- The Children's Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf (CCCBSD) -- embed foundational language comprehension strategies within language-rich environments. This occurs in traditional classrooms as well as in a variety of other settings, such as therapeutic services, programs in related arts (e.g., art, music, physical education) and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, math), and community-based activities. Professionals in these settings strive to make their learning environments not just language-rich but also rich in fostering the development of foundational language comprehension skills. At CCCBSD, all professionals -- including teachers, teaching assistants, related service providers/therapists, and specialists -- participated in professional development on building language comprehension across contexts. A solid foundation in language fosters the ability to understand and engage with the world. While many deaf learners acquire foundational language comprehension skills through daily interactions, this may not be true for all learners, particularly those with limited language access and those who are deafdisabled. For these students, foundational skills may need to be taught. Training educational professionals throughout the school to recognize opportunities for developing these skills promotes not just a language-rich environment but one that is language comprehension-rich.

The course of development of technology, its speed in the recent period and the point it has reached have led our relationship with technology to become a necessity rather than a choice. In this respect, teaching activities that are not intertwined with technology and do not include digital elements will remain as practices that will not go beyond the interest and expectations of students who are the subject of educational environments. This study, which examines the effect of digital content on listening skill in secondary school Turkish teaching, is at an important point in terms of showing the effect of digital elements on listening skill, which is the first learning channel of human beings and will continue until death, and which should be carefully emphasized in terms of forming the basis for other language skills. The sample of this study consists of 60 students in the seventh grade of a secondary school in Elazig province. In the study, mixed research method was preferred as the method and sequential explanatory design was preferred as the design. Quasi-experimental design was used in the quantitative part of the study and phenomenology design was used in the qualitative part. In the quantitative part of the study, there was one control and one experimental group. In order to obtain quantitative data within the scope of the research, the Listening Skills Scale developed by Yalçin & Özcan (2022) was applied to the control and experimental groups as pre-test and post-test. The experimental and control groups were determined according to the pre-test results of the students participating in the study. In the qualitative part of the study, data were obtained from interviews with the students and these interviews were analyzed by content analysis. The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the listening skill scale scores of the students in the experimental and control groups in the post-test application in favor of the experimental group, there was a significant increase between the pre-test and post-test scores of the listening skill scale applied to the control group, and there was a significant difference between the pre and post-application listening skill scale scores of the experimental group. Considering the results obtained from the interviews, it was seen that listening practices enriched with digital content facilitated comprehension, digital content practices improved listening skills and created a desire to participate in new activities. At the end of the study, suggestions were made for researchers, educators and related institutions.

Vygotsky's (1934; 1980) sociocultural theories of learning posit that learning is a socially negotiated activity. Learners can sustain this activity, and specifically how they engage in literacy practices, through participatory experiences with experts, known in sociocultural theory as a more knowledgeable other (MKO). However, hierarchies in academia can make these possibilities for collaboration scarce or difficult to break through for doctoral students, sustaining traditional hierarchies and bureaucracies of education. Digital platforms, though, can afford the possibility of subverting these divisions of social order in the academy and make room for different interlocutors to not only better access these MKOs but to also become an analogous MKO. In socially-mediated spaces such as Twitter, otherwise known as X, an acceptance of ontological and epistemological plurality can occur in virtual communities of practice. Through three examples with the American Educational Research Association's (AERA) Writing and Literacies monthly Twitter chats, the authors showcase how Vygotsky's concept of the MKO can appear in digital spaces, demonstrate the participatory nature of online writing communities, present the possibilities in providing opportunities for online collaborative experiences, and highlight the importance of a plurality of knowledge in public scholarship.

This study aims to analyze the graphical comprehension of 5th and 6th grade students in multigrade rural primary education in Chile. The theoretical framework considers levels of reading and semiotic levels in statistical graphs. A qualitative methodology of descriptive level is followed, using content analysis method for the responses given to a questionnaire by 22 students from five multigrade rural schools. The results show that, overall, students do not encounter difficulties in answering questions at level 1 reading (literal reading), but difficulties gradually increase as the reading level increases. Regarding semiotic levels, difficulties arise in constructing graphs using data distribution (semiotic level 3) and completing a graph with two data distributions (semiotic level 4).

Online learning has become an important advance in education in the last decade. We developed an online learning system related to land and tree measurements. University students were given pre- and postexposure surveys for two courses offered within the online system. Surveys were designed to assess whether the knowledge level and confidence of students increased through interaction with the online system. A final assessment was conducted to understand user experiences with the online technology. Statistically significant increases in knowledge and confidence concerning land measurement concepts and tree measurement topics were evident among survey participants. Survey participants agreed that the course functioned properly, that graphics and images within the courses were useful, and that using the system prior to in-person instruction helped students better understand concepts.

The objective of this study was to find effect of Jazz smart classroom's online quiz on academic achievement of students at secondary school level. Experimental design was used in which two groups were selected one was control and other was experimental group. Experimental group was given a treatment of six weeks by using Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz. A sample of 30 students of class 10 was selected. Convenience sampling technique was used. Instrument used for collection of data was pre-test and post-test. Twenty lessons were delivered by using Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz. Same pre-test and post-test used. The test was validated by the experts from University of Okara. The reliability of test was determined by reliability analysis with SPSS. The t-test was used for the comparison of data of control and experimental group. The results of experiment showed that the mean scores of students in post-test which were taught by using Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz scored significantly higher than those taught by using traditional method. Some recommendations were made for teachers and students to use online quiz for better teaching and learning. Government should take an initiative to use Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz in high schools.

Vocational high schools in "3T" area on Bawean Island have limitations in human resources quality, equipment, production or practice tools, and industrial partnership, which differed from the vocational high schools located in advanced and developed areas. This research objective is to discover the description of employability to the vocational high school students in "3T" area in Bawean island. The research method applied was the qualitative method using the phenomenology approach. The data collection was obtained through semi-structured interviews. This research participant was eight students at vocational high school "X," "Y," "Z," and "W" schools in Bawean Island, which is one of the "3T" area. The analysis method in this research was content analysis. This research result shows that students in the "3T" area were showing their effort to prepare themselves in facing the job market by enhancing their employability in learning activities within the class or practice in the laboratory. The students' employability includes skills, knowledge, comprehension, personality, career identity, social and human relations, and personal adaptability. Students realize that they are in the "3T" area and must work harder to improve their work skills so as not to lose their jobs.

The issue of students' difficulties in solving context-based mathematics problems has been extensively investigated by numerous studies. However, limited study focus on how pre-service primary school teacher (PSPSTs) encounter difficulties in solving context-based fundamental mathematics problems. To fill this gap, this study aims to investigate PSPSTs' difficulties encountered while solving context-based mathematics tasks by identifying the error type they made based on the error classification proposed in Newman Error Analysis (NEA). This is an error analysis study with a summative qualitative content analysis approach involving 87 PSPSTs in an Indonesian Islamic University. Data were collected through a test, in-depth interviews and document analysis of the PSPSTs' responses. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative content analysis was performed using Atlas.ti software. The findings revealed that many PSPSTs encounter difficulties in solving context-based problems. Approximately 22.1% of PSPSTs committed errors in comprehension, 17.5% each in reading and encoding, 14.7% in transformation, and 8.7% in process skill. Furthermore, the findings indicated a hierarchical structure in the occurrence of errors. Errors in the early stages have a high potential to cause errors in subsequent problem-solving stages. All the results are discussed, along with their implications for practice and suggestions for future research.

The present educational intervention study focused on addressing some areas of improvement in the teaching and learning of trigonometric ratios in high school students. A diagnostic evaluation was performed that revealed an instrumental understanding of trigonometric concepts by the students. Subsequently, a didactic sequence was implemented that incorporated practical applications of trigonometric ratios in the context of displacement vectors. The results of the study indicated significant improvements in students' understanding after the intervention, marking a shift toward relational understanding. This proposal is presented as an effective strategy and suggests promising ways to improve pedagogy in this field.

The use of #digitalpowerups is a technique that involves associating keywords with prompts in online discussion forums, which enables students to have more choice and voice. These powerups not only help structure responses but also enrich discussions and develop academic skills necessary for online assignments. The approach leverages the social media interaction space of discussion forums by introducing hashtags that remind students of the prompt being addressed and indicate the level of Bloom's being engaged. By using the powerups, students can engage in mid-levels and higher-order levels of Bloom's, along with the lower levels that they typically engage in based on the design and facilitation of the discussion. Students typically participate in the lower levels of Bloom's taxonomy (#remember, #understand) due to the way the discussion is structured and facilitated. However, the use of #digitalpowerups encourages students to move beyond these levels and engage in mid-levels (#apply, #analyze, #evaluate) and higher-order levels (#create, #connect) during discussions. The powerups also scaffold or frame student responses with habits of mind skills. This article examines how the #digitalpowerups strategy supports learning in a virtual community for Environmental Concerns in the Environmental Sociology Course through content analysis of student discussion postings. The primary data (total of 375 postings) were collected from the Environmental Sociology Class throughout the following academic years: Fall 2020 (96 postings), Fall 2021 (67 postings), Spring 2022 (92 postings) and Spring 2023 (120 postings).

Students believed physics was one of the most challenging sciences in education, and their interest in learning physics was lacking. Therefore, this study aims to enhance students' understanding and creativity in the STEAM learning system on electricity by creating a project (Paper Circuit) using the students' creativity at the junior high school level - quantitative research with a pre-experimental design used for this study. The population is 8th grade and 9th grade (50 students adapted to the curriculum used in the school) in one of the Junior Secondary Schools located in Bandung and Cimahi, Indonesia. The data is obtained from the pretest-posttest results, which show that the average pre-test score was 57.04 and the post-test score was 76.64. The nonparametric test was tested using the Wilcoxon test to measure student understanding. The results from e Wilcoxon are 0.000, which shows sig. <0.05, which means there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. Students' creativity is obtained from the Creativity Product Analysis Matrix (CPAM), and the result for Project 1 is 73.71%, categorized as enough, and Project 2 is 83.13%, categorized as good. Based on the result, Paper Circuit STEAM project-based learning can enhance student understanding and creativity. STEAM project-based learning can be used as an alternative teaching strategy in junior secondary school.

Potentially serving as the primary national literacy initiative, the Reading Seed Programme (RSP) by PUSTAKA Negeri Sarawak aims to enculturate a reading culture from an early age. For instance, RSP was invented to promote reading culture by having the pregnant mother read to their infant until the child was three years old. The process is vital to helping children learn to read from a young age and eventually empower them to be independent readers for life. Particularly, the objectives of RSP are to promote reading habits by getting parents to read to their children, strengthen a child's vocabulary, and develop their confidence, especially in reading. Thus, this paper is primarily designed to investigate the demographic differences between RSP participation and the programme's objectives, i.e., reading habits, parent's engagement, vocabulary ability, and confidence development. To assess how well the RSP achieved its goal of assisting toddlers in developing their confidence as readers. An online survey yielded 385 completed responses, representing a 92.33% response rate among RSP participants. The key findings indicated that the age of the child, mode of joining the programme, and year received the RSP's kits are the most important indicators of the usefulness of the programme (RSP and RSP's kits) and the programme's objectives attainment, especially in straightening the child's vocabulary and comprehension and developing their confidence, especially in reading and knowledge. Nonetheless, the results of this study highlighted the novelty of the early literacy programme of the RSP in cultivating the reading culture, parent-child engagement in reading, and preparing children to acquire knowledge.

The present study explores the integration of critical thinking skills concepts in agricultural project management instruction at the undergraduate level, using the traditional classroom theoretical approach and a blended learning model. The study, encompassing 118 undergraduate students, compares the effectiveness of these methods in enhancing students' understanding, measured through examination scores, group presentations, and students' overall perceptions of the use of the methods. Students achieved a mean examination score of 64.82% under the traditional approach and 72.66% for the blended learning approach. Statistical analysis, including a t-test, revealed significant differences favoring the blended approach. Additionally, performance assessments using six criteria during presentations yielded varied mean scores. ANOVA analysis showed a significant difference among the groups, and post hoc tests highlighted distinctions between specific groups' means, emphasizing the effectiveness of blended learning in enhancing students understanding. Students' perceptions, gathered through a 5-point Likert scale, underscored satisfaction with the blended approach due to its flexibility, catering to diverse learning styles, and fostering critical thinking skills. We recommend institutions strengthen project management instruction by adopting blended learning, emphasizing critical thinking, and prioritizing continuous assessment and student-centric approaches since they cultivate an engaging learning experience, preparing students for managing future complexities on projects. Game-based learning has emerged as a promising approach to enhance students' engagement and understanding in educational settings. This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating physics education technology (PhET) simulations as game-based learning tools in teaching physics concepts related tao equilibrium system. A quasi-experimental design was employed, comparing the performance of students exposed to PhET simulations (experimental group) with those taught through traditional methods (control group). Results indicate significant improvements in both understanding and motivation among students in the experimental group, particularly in solving complex physics problems. Furthermore, students perceived PhET simulations positively, emphasizing their value in enhancing learning experiences. The findings underscore the potential of game-based learning tools like PhET simulations in promoting active learning and conceptual understanding in physics education. Future research directions include exploring long-term effects, conducting comparative studies across diverse educational contexts, and investigating the impact on various learning outcomes to further validate the efficacy of game-based learning approaches.

Basketball, as one of the most popular sports courses in Chinese colleges and universities, has always been taught in a traditional ball teaching method, which has caused many problems in students' learning effects, such as poor basketball tactics, weaker physical fitness and so on. Therefore, it is imperative to reform the basketball courses in colleges and universities. Accordingly, this paper is aimed to explore the effects of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) method in basketball courses on male students from the Class of 2023, a university in Shanghai, China, in terms of their basketball tactics and physical fitness. The study sampled 60 students randomly selected from 1850 students who took the optional basketball courses. The selected students were divided into two classes, either with 30 students: the experimental classes taught with the TGFU method and the control class taught with the traditional method. The data were collected from the pre-tests and post-tests of both classes and analyzed by the tool Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS 24.0). Including the calculation of average values and standard deviation for T-test. It is found that the TGFU adopted in the basketball courses has significantly improved students' basketball tactics and physical fitness, and that this method is advised to apply in college courses for students of all grades.

Through signs and symbols, language serves as a means of expressing ideas and sentiments. These signs and symbols are used to encode and decode the information. The world has many different languages in use. As their first language, a baby learns their mother tongue. From birth, he or she is exposed to this language. Any additional language that is learned or acquired is referred to as a second language. There are two definitions of SLA, which stands for second language acquisition. It is a term that is generally used to describe learning a second language. To be more explicit, it is the name of the theory that outlines how individuals learn a second language. As we focus on speaking, this largely unconscious process happens. It is comparable to the acquisition of a second language, which explains how formal language teaching helps us acquire languages more deliberately. The ideas that the teacher can create communication contexts that support language learning, that language learning progresses naturally, that affective filters exist that hinder language learning, especially for adults, and that input is of utmost importance are all implications for the language classroom. This study aims to investigate the impact of language training on young children's language acquisition. The technique is qualitative and draws its methods from literature reviews.

Literary discussions are widely utilized in education, yet their profound impact on students' comprehension requires in-depth exploration. This paper delves into the influence of literary discussions on student comprehension and examines how these discussions can enhance students' understanding and analytical skills. Through literature reviews and case analyses, this study investigates teaching strategies, student engagement levels, classroom ambiance, and other factors involved in literary discussions, revealing the potential mechanisms through which literary discussions influence student comprehension. The paper explores variations in the application of literary discussions across different types of literary works (novels, poetry, drama, etc.) and their relationship with students' creative thinking. Finally, the paper provides recommendations to assist educators in effectively utilizing literary discussions to enhance students' comprehension skills. Students must have the opportunity to discuss literature in ways that provoke deep thought and meaning from each work they encounter. Therefore, English Language Arts teachers and instructors must be creative in finding unique ways in which they encourage their students to experience and respond to literature. This paper discusses a variety of strategies to implement in virtual and in-person classrooms, such as Socratic seminar, Teacher-led as a facilitator, Teacher-led as a promoter of diverse perspectives, Using student-generated discussion questions whole class, Using student-generated discussion questions in small groups, Using Close-ended questions, Using Open-ended questions, Inquiry-based, Making real-world connections to the literature, Literature Circles. These literary discussion strategies can be used for both fiction and nonfiction literature.

The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between teacher and student mindsets in relation to the student's comprehension of mathematics concepts. This study used a qualitative research type with a case study method. Participants in this study were 30 students and one teacher from one of the public junior high schools in Cianjur, Indonesia. Data sources used in this study were collected through teacher and student questionnaires, class observations, and semi-structured interviews. The class observation material was about linear function, and the learning process was carried out using the Complex Instruction (CI) approach based on growth mindset instruction. The questionnaire results show that teachers and students tend to have a fixed mindset. The fixed mindset of both the students and the teacher is particularly evident in their beliefs about the nature of math and their orientation towards student mastery and performance. The results of observations and interviews show a relationship between this mindset and student performance in class. Most students tend to show low performance in understanding linear function concepts. Based on the observations, students experienced problems in algebra thinking, had difficulty understanding mathematical concepts as a whole, and showed a lack of motivation and self-confidence. The results indicate that there is a significant relationship between the fixed mindsets of teachers and students towards students' lower performance in mathematics learning in the classroom.

Understanding by Design (UbD) is a well-known curricular methodology aiming at leading students to develop a deep understanding of the arguments proposed by teachers. Through a path including stimulating questions, student motivation, deepening of the argument, reflection, design and assessment of authentic performances, the students develop a broad understanding of the learned argument. While there are plenty of articles describing various experiences in classrooms and schools showing the benefits of UbD, rarely has this methodology been the object of experimental or quasi-experimental studies. A study conforming to quasi-experimental criteria has been performed in a Swiss vocational school, where a teacher taught two groups of students using UbD principles, while using with a third group a more usual teaching approach. The curriculum topic was the study of mathematical relations and functions. The results, collected during one school year, showed that the first two groups outperformed the third and that the effect of UbD lasted at least for one school year. Since the teacher remained the same, we can likely attribute the outcome to the use of the methodology.

Within the past decade, there has been a shift in how our guiding professional documents conceptualise information literacy (IL) - evolving from a skills-based conceptualisation to one emphasising ways of thinking and knowing. This has been both productive and disruptive. Our professional documentation does not provide a framework for making this shift or for scaffolding learning to develop complex and sophisticated ways of thinking and knowing. In this study, we apply Bloom's revised taxonomy for educational objectives to instructor descriptions of IL (n=51) to develop a draft taxonomy that attempts to build a bridge between these two conceptualisations. The data was drawn from a survey that was administered to instructors and instructional support staff immediately preceding their participation in a multi-day teaching professional development workshop related to IL. We believe that this model has implications for how we approach the development of learners' IL with intentionality, both in collaboration with faculty and for our own teaching practices as librarians.

Game-based learning has gained significant attention from educational researchers because of its ability to create an engaging and enjoyable learning environment for students. However, there was a research gap regarding the design of game mechanics that specifically helped students understand abstract scientific concepts. Also, the impact of increased motivation, interest, and engagement on conceptual understanding remained uncertain. The objective of this study was, therefore, to analyze the efficacy of using analogy teaching as a learning design principle for creating game mechanics to improve students' conceptions of bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate whether providing a clear analogy comparison after gameplay could have a significant impact on students' learning outcomes. The research also examined the correlation between students' enjoyment level during gameplay and their learning outcomes. An embedded experimental mixed methods design was utilized to address the research objectives. The participants were 54 undergraduate students from non-science disciplines. They were divided into two groups: the Game-based Learning [GL] group and the Game-based Learning with eXplicit analogy discussion [GLX] group. Both groups used a board game to learn about bioaccumulation and biomagnification. The GL group had reflective discussions about the concepts after playing the game. The GLX group had an additional task where they identified similarities and differences between the gameplay and the scientific concepts, and they explicitly discussed these through a worksheet provided before the discussion. Results showed that after engaging in game-based learning, both groups exhibited a significant improvement in their understanding of bioaccumulation and biomagnification, moving from incomplete or partial understanding to more scientifically accurate concepts. Notably, the GLX group scored higher in post-tests compared to the GL group. Despite high levels of enjoyment during gameplay, there was no correlation between this enjoyment and the post-test scores. An unexpected slight negative correlation was found between immersion during the game and post-test scores. Discussion and implementation of the research results were provided.

The objective of this study is to develop e-modules for bump pass learning for seventh-grade students. This study identified the problems and needs of students in learning bump pass skills, e-module eligibility and the effect of the e-module on students' bump pass skills. Two groups of seventh grades, two teachers serving as content experts and two media experts participated in this study at State Junior High School 1 Talawi. Five steps were used in conducting this research: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The researchers collected data through questionnaires, interviews, observation, documentation, expert testing and tests. The questionnaire, interview, observation and documentation results were analyzed using an interactive data analysis model. Expert test data were analyzed using the inter-rater agreement model and test result data were analyzed using an independent t-test. There are three findings in this research. First, the reason for the students' difficulties in learning bump passes is their lack of interest in the content found in their textbooks. They need learning media that are interesting and can be accessed through smartphones. Thus, e-modules are a suitable learning medium to solve problems and meet their needs. Second, the developed e-module was confirmed to have high content validity and meet the criteria for good learning materials and media based on the feasibility test results. Third, the e-module has positively and significantly affected students' understanding and bump pass skills. Thus, it is suggested that the module be used for teaching bump pass skills at other schools.

This narrative essay describes a basic writing instructor's engagement with student confusion in a hybrid Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) course. The story examines the ways confusion can mark sites of engagement for students and teachers and how ALP courses, in particular, might mediate effective (and ineffective) forms of confusion.

We examined how noun frequency and the typicality of surrounding linguistic context contribute to children's real-time comprehension. Monolingual English-learning toddlers viewed pairs of pictures while hearing sentences with typical or atypical sentence frames ("Look at the…" vs. "Examine the…"), followed by nouns that were higher- or lower-frequency labels for a referent ("horse" vs. "pony"). Toddlers showed no significant differences in comprehension of nouns in typical and atypical sentence frames. However, they were less accurate in recognizing lower-frequency nouns, particularly among toddlers with smaller vocabularies. We conclude that toddlers can recognize nouns in diverse sentence contexts, but their representations develop gradually.

Typically, vocabulary instruction is associated as part of reading instruction. However, vocabulary instruction is also a necessary component of mathematics instruction. In fact, state and national standards (e.g., Common Core State Standards) require elementary students to communicate about mathematics to provide clear explanations, construct coherent arguments, and critique mathematical reasoning. Students need to become proficient in mathematics language and vocabulary to meet these standards. This article provides guidelines for selecting which mathematics terms to teach, describes the vocabulary map routine used in Stevens et al. (2023), and provides a sample vocabulary map with step-by-step modeling.

Background: People with communication problems experience challenges in participation. Optimizing communicative participation for this population is an important outcome of speech and language therapy. Participation experiences are best assessed from the patient's perspective, using a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM). The Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) has been developed to identify perceived problems in communicative participation. However, previous research has shown that the item bank does not cover all domains and concepts of communicative participation, contains general communication items, and is not suitable for all people with communication problems. Aims: To develop a comprehensive PROM aimed at measuring communicative participation for all adults with communication problems and test its content validity. Methods & Procedures: An initial pool of 242 items was based on three sources: relevant content from an earlier literature review and concept elicitation study, and the translation of the items of the CPIB. This item pool was pilot-tested for comprehensibility and comprehensiveness using cognitive debriefing interviews in adults with different communication problems (speech, language, voice, hearing and cognitive communication disorders). This resulted in a second version of the item bank. The content validity of this version was tested in a group of professionals. The last (third) version of 133 items was tested for content validity in a second, new group of adults with various communication problems. Outcomes & Results: The initial pool of 242 items was developed and pilot-tested in 27 adults with different communication problems. After modifications, 161 items remained, which were tested in a content validity study with 25 people with different communication problems and five professionals (in the field of speech and language therapy and speech and language research). The professionals considered 91.9% of the item bank relevant and comprehensible, and comprehensive by adding two items. The item bank was then considered relevant, comprehensible and comprehensive by the group of adults with communication problems. A total of 133 items remained in the item bank, related to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Activities and Participation domains 'mobility', 'self-care', 'domestic life', 'interpersonal interactions and relationships', 'major life areas' and 'community, social and civic life'. Conclusions & Implications: MyCommunication--Adults is an item bank for measuring communicative participation in adults with communication difficulties. The next step is to test the psychometric properties of the item bank, in order to establish a final item bank. The refined description of the construct of communicative participation can already be used for participation-focused goal-setting between individuals with communication problems and speech and language therapists.

Background: The abbreviated version of the Token Test (aTT) is widely used to assess language comprehension deficits in stroke patients (SPs). However, aTT has not been validated for Latin American Spanish speakers, so clinicians tend to use cut-off scores for aTT validated in developed countries. Aims: To provide normative data for the Spanish aTT (Sp-aTT) in healthy Chilean Spanish-speaking and SP, determining the influence of sociodemographic variables such as gender, age and education on Sp-aTT performance. Methods & Procedures: A total of 210 healthy volunteers (age range = 18-88 years) and 197 SPs (age range = 23-94 years), all native speakers of Chilean Spanish, were recruited. The association of age, gender and years of education on the Sp-aTT performance was analysed. Specificity and sensibility analyses of the Sp-aTT to diagnose language comprehension deficits were completed. Outcomes & Results: Only age (p < 0.001) and years of education (p < 0.001) impacted the total score of Sp-aTT. Gender did not show an association with Sp-aTT performance (p = 0.181). For SPs, the Sp-aTT score showed a significant positive correlation (rho = 0.4, p < 0.001) with the aphasia severity rating scale (ASRS) score. For Sp-aTT, the area under the curve was 0.97, and the optimal cut-off score for the Sp-aTT was 30 (0.73 of sensitivity, 0.92 of specificity and a Youden index of 0.644). Conclusions & Implications: Age and years of education are two key factors to be controlled for when determining the optimal cut-off points for the Sp-aTT. Our results also highlight the need for language-specific norms in stroke and aphasia research.

Reading comprehension and arithmetic skills are essential abilities for children, particularly at the early career. Examine the link between language proficiency and numeral information process amongst primary school children. This study examines numeral comprehension in 600 Chinese primary second graders with different levels of decoding and linguistic comprehension skills. Four groups of children were compared, including typical readers (TR), poor decoders (PD), poor comprehenders (PC) and general poor readers (GPR). Results showed that the four groups had similar performances in numeral comprehension when the answer options to a question on the quantity of numerals were presented in Arabic numbers. However, when the answer options to a question on the quantity of numeral information were presented in analogue nonsymbolic magnitude representations, the PC group outperformed the PD and GPR group. The findings of this study has demonstrated the link between language proficiency and numerical information process in reading comprehension.

The present study aimed to examine whether Mandarin-speaking children on the autism spectrum showed differences in comprehending spatial demonstratives ("this" and "that", and "here" and "there"), as compared to typically developing (TD) children. Another aim of this study was to investigate the roles of theory of mind (ToM) and executive functions (EF) in the comprehension of spatial demonstratives. Twenty-seven autistic children (mean age 6.86) and 27 receptive-vocabulary-matched TD children (mean age 5.82) were recruited. Demonstrative comprehension was assessed based on participants' ability to place objects in certain locations according to experimenters' instructions which involved these demonstratives in three different conditions (same-, opposite-, and spectator-perspective conditions). Four false-belief tasks were administered to measure ToM, and the word-span task and the dimensional change card sort task were used to measure two subcomponents of EF -- working memory and mental flexibility -- respectively. Children on the autism spectrum were found to score below TD children in the comprehension of spatial demonstratives. In addition, the results showed that ToM and working memory were conducive to the correct interpretation of spatial demonstratives. The two cognitive abilities mutually influenced their respective roles in spatial demonstrative comprehension in the three different conditions. The findings suggest that the comprehension of spatial demonstratives comprehension is an area of need in Mandarin-speaking children on the autism spectrum, and it might be linked to their differences in cognitive abilities.
