Abstract Traditional chemotherapy drugs for cervical cancer often cause significant toxic side effects and drug resistance problems, highlighting the urgent need for more innovative and effective treatment strategies. Magnesium alloy is known to be degradable and biocompatible. The release of degradation products Mg2+, OH−, and H2 from magnesium alloy can alter the tumor microenvironment, providing potential anti-tumor properties. We explored the innovative use of magnesium alloy biomaterials in the treatment of cervical cancer, investigating how various concentrations of Mg2+ on the proliferation and cell death of cervical cancer cells. The results revealed that varying concentrations of Mg2+ significantly inhibited cervical cancer by arresting the cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase and inducing apoptosis in SiHa cells, effectively reducing tumor cell proliferation. In vivo experiments demonstrated that 20 mM Mg2+ group had the smallest tumor volume, exhibiting a potent inhibitory effect on the biological characteristics of cervical cancer. This enhances the therapeutic potential of this biomaterial as a local anti-tumor therapy and lays a theoretical foundation for the potential application of magnesium in the treatment of cervical cancer.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is an important serum glycoprotein and a major component of antibodies. Glycans on IgG affect the binding of IgG to the Fc receptor or complement C1q, which in turn affects the biological activity and biological function of IgG. Altered glycosylation patterns on IgG emerge as important biomarkers in the aging process and age-related diseases. Key aging-related alterations observed in IgG glycosylation include reductions in galactosylation and sialylation, alongside increases in agalactosylation, and bisecting GlcNAc. Understanding the role of IgG glycosylation in aging-related diseases offers insights into disease mechanisms and provides opportunities for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. This review summarizes five aspects of IgG: an overview of IgG, IgG glycosylation, IgG glycosylation with inflammation mediation, IgG glycan changes with normal aging, as well as the relevance of IgG glycan changes to aging-related diseases. This review provides a reference for further investigation of the regulatory mechanisms of IgG glycosylation in aging-related diseases, as well as for evaluating the potential of IgG glycosylation changes as markers of aging and aging-related diseases.

Abstract Greenspace, offering multifaceted ecological and socioeconomic benefits to the nature system and human society, is integral to the 11th Sustainable Development Goal pertaining to cities and communities. Spatially and temporally explicit information on greenspace is a premise to gauge the balance between its supply and demand. However, existing efforts on urban greenspace mapping primarily focus on specific time points or baseline years without well considering seasonal fluctuations, which obscures our knowledge of greenspace’s spatiotemporal dynamics in urban settings. Here, we combined spectral unmixing approach, time-series phenology modeling, and Sentinel-2 satellite images with a 10-m resolution and nearly 5-day revisit cycle to generate a four-year (2019–2022) 10-m and 10-day resolution greenspace dynamic data cube over 1028 global major cities (with an urbanized area >100 km2). This data cube can effectively capture greenspace seasonal dynamics across greenspace types, cities, and climate zones. It also can reflect the spatiotemporal dynamics of the cooling effect of greenspace with Landsat land surface temperature data. The developed data cube provides informative data support to investigate the spatiotemporal interactions between greenspace and human society.

Abstract Introduction Sepsis is associated with neurocognitive impairment among preterm neonates but less is known about term neonates with sepsis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide an update of neurocognitive outcomes including cognitive delay, visual impairment, auditory impairment, and cerebral palsy, among neonates with sepsis. Methods We performed a systematic review of PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and Web of Science for eligible studies published between January 2011 and March 2023. We included case–control, cohort studies and cross-sectional studies. Case reports and articles not in English language were excluded. Using the adjusted estimates, we performed random effects model meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of developing neurocognitive impairment among neonates with sepsis. Results Of 7,909 studies, 24 studies (n = 121,645) were included. Majority of studies were conducted in the United States (n = 7, 29.2%), and all studies were performed among neonates. 17 (70.8%) studies provided follow-up till 30 months. Sepsis was associated with increased risk of cognitive delay [adjusted odds ratio, aOR 1.14 (95% CI: 1.01—1.28)], visual impairment [aOR 2.57 (95%CI: 1.14- 5.82)], hearing impairment [aOR 1.70 (95% CI: 1.02–2.81)] and cerebral palsy [aOR 2.48 (95% CI: 1.03–5.99)]. Conclusion Neonates surviving sepsis are at a higher risk of poorer neurodevelopment. Current evidence is limited by significant heterogeneity across studies, lack of data related to long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes and term infants.

Functional tremor is the most common subtype of functional movement disorder (FMD). At present, there is no "gold standard" for diagnosis. Most clinical manifestations coincide with organic tremor, which can easily lead to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Characteristic electrophysiological manifestations can provide objective and repeatable diagnostic information, effectively supplement the history and physical examination, and can also be used in the differential diagnosis from organic tremor. This article reviews the electrophysiological characteristics of functional tremor and its application in diagnosis and differential diagnosis, in order to improve the clinical understanding of this disease.

Abstract Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most lethal diseases worldwide. Cancer-derived exosomes, benefiting from the protective role of the lipid membrane, exhibit remarkable stability in the circulatory system. These exosomes, released by tumor microenvironment, contain various biomolecules such as proteins, RNAs, and lipids that plays a pivotal role in mediating distant communication between the local pancreatic tumor and other organs or tissues. They facilitate the transfer of oncogenic factors to distant sites, contributing to the compromised body immune system, distant metastasis, diabetes, cachexia, and promoting a microenvironment conducive to tumor growth and metastasis in pancreatic cancer patients. Beyond their intrinsic roles, circulating exosomes in peripheral blood can be detected to facilitate accurate liquid biopsy. This approach offers a novel and promising method for the diagnosis and management of pancreatic cancer. Consequently, circulating exosomes are not only crucial mediators of systemic cell-cell communication during pancreatic cancer progression but also hold great potential as precise tools for pancreatic cancer management and treatment. Exosome-based liquid biopsy and therapy represent promising advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. Exosomes can serve as drug delivery vehicles, enhancing the targeting and efficacy of anticancer treatments, modulating the immune system, and facilitating gene editing to suppress tumor growth. Ongoing research focuses on biomarker identification, drug delivery systems, and clinical trials to validate the safety and efficacy of exosome-based therapies, offering new possibilities for early diagnosis and precision treatment in pancreatic cancer. Leveraging the therapeutic potential of exosomes, including their ability to deliver targeted drugs and modulate immune responses, opens new avenues for innovative treatment strategies.

In order to study the effect of ultrafine grinding time on the quality characteristics of whole wheat flour and dough, wheat was used as raw material and the whole grain wheat was ultra-finely ground by direct grinding method. The effects of particle size on the gelatinization characteristics, thermomechanical properties of whole wheat flour rheological properties of dough, color and texture of dough were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of crushing time, the particle size of whole wheat flour decreased, and the D50 decreased from 107.20 um to 45.65 um. The particle size distribution was more concentrated. The peak viscosity decreased, and the setback value decreased from 623.33 mPa·s to 485.33 mPa·s. The reduction of particle size could delay the aging of dough and product. The hardness of dough gradually decreased with the decrease of particle size, and the elasticity and cohesion gradually increased. The water absorption rate of dough increased from 65.7% to 76.7%, and the stabilization time also showed an upward trend. The low-temperature ultrafine grinding technology of wheat grains can improve the quality of whole wheat flour, and it is feasible to apply this technology to the field of whole grain processing.

The virtual coupling technology of urban rail trains offers an effective solution to unbalanced temporal and spatial distribution of passenger flow. Based on the key requirements for urban rail trains, namely punctuality, comfort and sufficient time for platform operations, this study proposed a cooperative speed planning algorithm for virtual coupling, featuring information centralized decision-making, following an investigation into train traction and braking characteristics, vehicle kinematics and dynamics models. This algorithm was further devised to incorporate constraint conditions, objective functions, and optimal solutions, and then used to calculate the planning sequence of displacements, speeds, accelerations, traction or braking forces, jerks and operating conditions during the operation of two coupled trains over time. In subsequent field experiments, the arrival time differences of the coupled trains were less than 3 s, stopping time differences between the preceding and following trains were less than 2 s, jerks were maintained at less than 0.1 m/s3, and smooth switching was achieved between traction and braking conditions, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in facilitating safe, punctual, comfortable and efficient operation of coupled trains. The study outcomes lay a solid foundation for future engineering applications.

To investigate the effect of combined treatment with L-ascorbic acid (AA) and ultrasound (US) (AS) on the storage quality of fresh-cut taro, the present study measured changes in the sensory quality and browning-related enzyme activities during storage of Yongding grown fresh-cut Liuyuehong taro soaked in 2% AA solution for 15 minutes, followed by US treatment (53 kHz and 400 W for 10 minutes). Compared with the control group, combined treatment with AS could reduce the water loss rate of fresh-cut taro, maintain higher hardness, delay the increase in browning index, reduce cell membrane permeability, inhibit the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), and suppress surface microbial growth, thereby maintaining higher sensory quality of fresh-cut taro. In addition, AS treatment could also maintain higher activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), decrease the activities of peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), inhibit the consumption of phenolic substances, slow down the loss of nutrients such as starch, soluble proteins, and soluble solids, suppress the accumulation of soluble quinones, and delay the flavor deterioration of fresh-cut taro during storage. These results indicated that AS treatment could maintain better storage quality of fresh-cut taro.

Abstract Background Existing research on chyle leak (CL) after pancreatic surgery is mostly focused on pancreaticoduodenectomy and lacks investigation on total pancreatectomy (TP). This study aimed to explore potential risk factors of CL and develop a predictive model for patients with pancreatic tumor undergoing TP. Methods This retrospective study enrolled 90 consecutive patients undergoing TP from January 2015 to December 2023 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. According to the inclusion criteria, 79 patients were finally included in the following analysis. The LASSO regression and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify risk factors associated with CL and construct a predictive nomogram. Then, the ROC analysis, calibration curve, decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve (CIC) were performed to assess its discrimination, accuracy, and efficacy. Due to the small sample size, we adopted the bootstrap resampling method with 500 repetitions for validation. Lastly, we plotted and analyzed the trend of postoperative drainage volume in CL patients. Results We revealed that venous resection (OR = 4.352, 95%CI 1.404–14.04, P = 0.011) was an independent risk factor for CL after TP. Prolonged operation time (OR = 1.473, 95%CI 1.015–2.237, P = 0.052) was also associated with an increased incidence of CL. We included these two factors in our prediction model. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.752 (95%CI 0.622–0.874) after bootstrap. The calibration curve, DCA and CIC showed great accuracy and clinical benefit of our nomogram. In patients with CL, the mean drainage volume was significantly higher in venous resection group and grade B CL group. Conclusion Venous resection was an independent risk factor for chyle leak after TP. Patients undergoing vascular resection during TP should be alert for the occurrence of CL after surgery. We then constructed a nomogram consisted of venous resection and operation time to predict the odds of CL in patients undergoing TP.

Abstract Background At present, it has been found that many patients have acquired resistance to radiotherapy, which greatly reduces the effect of radiotherapy and further affects the prognosis. CircRNAs is involved in the regulation of radiosensitivity of many kinds of tumor cells. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to explore the regulatory effect of CircRNA_101491 on radiosensitivity of ESCC and its related mechanism. Methods We established ESCC radiation-resistant cell line (KYSE150R cell) by gradient dose method, and tested the difference of KYSE150 between KYSE150R cell and parent cell in vitro. Then, after knocking down the expression of CircRNA_101491, a series of in vitro experiments were conducted to verify the effects of CircRNA_101491 on the phenotype and radiosensitivity of KYSE150R cells, and further analyzed the related regulatory mechanism. In addition, we also used the model of transplanted tumor in nude mice to investigate the effect of CircRNA_101491 on the radiosensitivity of ESCC in vivo. Results According to a series of in vitro experiments, we confirmed that KYSE150R cells lost the epithelial phenotype and obtained interstitial cell-like phenotype, and found that CircRNA_101491 was highly expressed in KYSE150R cells. In addition, we found that knocking down the expression of CircRNA_101491 will lift the inhibition of miR-125a-5p, and then reverse the process of EMT, accelerate the process of apoptosis, thus play a role in radiosensitization. The in vivo experiment of transplanted tumor in nude mice also showed that knocking down the expression of CircRNA_101491 could enhance the radiosensitivity of ESCC. Conclusion In conclusion, we confirmed that interfering with the expression of CircRNA_101491 can relieve the inhibition of miR-125a-5p, thus reverse the process of interstitial phenotype, accelerate the process of apoptosis, and enhance the radiosensitivity of ESCC.

Abstract The ongoing war in Ukraine has seriously impacted the agricultural sector, yet its exact effects on agricultural production are not well understood. Here we combine satellite imagery, machine learning, and statistical regression approaches to present a spatially detailed assessment of agricultural losses for five high-risk provinces in eastern Ukraine (Crimea, Donets’k, Kherson, Luhans’k, and Zaporizhzhya). Our findings indicated that approximately 18.11 ± 2.47% of croplands were left unplanted following the war. Among the cultivated areas, wheat, sunflower, and rapeseed experienced average production losses of 36.39–37.19% in 2022 compared to pre-war levels during 2019–2021. Economically, the indirect losses resulting from decreased production, corresponding to $520.36 ± 22.52, $427.59 ± 24.62, and $205.02 ± 11.53 million USD for wheat, sunflower, and rapeseed crops, respectively, were 1.31–2.16 times higher than direct losses due to unplanted. We also found that reductions in crop production were primarily affected by war intensity indicated by changes in nighttime lights. This methodology offers a comprehensive framework for quantifying agricultural damages from wars, which can be applicable beyond the Russia-Ukraine context.

Abstract The importance of molecular docking in drug discovery lies in the precise recognition between potential drug compounds and their target receptors, which is generally based on the computational method. However, it will become quite interesting if the rigid cavity structure of supramolecular macrocycles can precisely recognize a series of guests with specific fragments by mimicking molecular docking through co-crystallization experiments. Herein, we report a phenylphosphine oxide-bridged aromatic supramolecular macrocycle, F[3]A1-[P(O)Ph]3, which precisely recognizes benzonitrile derivatives through non-covalent interactions to form key-lock complexes by co-crystallization method. A total of 15 various benzonitrile derivatives as guest molecules are specifically bound by F[3]A1-[P(O)Ph]3 in co-crystal structures, respectively. Notably, among them, crisaborole (anti-dermatitis) and alectinib (anti-cancer) with the benzonitrile fragment, which are two commercial drug molecules approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), could also form a key-lock complex with F[3]A1-[P(O)Ph]3 in the crystal state, respectively.

Abstract Background Clozapine is an off-label drug used in most countries to prevent suicide in individuals with schizophrenia. However, few studies have reported real-world prescription practices. This study aimed to explore the association between a history of suicidal behavior and clozapine prescribing during eight weeks of hospitalization for individuals with early-stage schizophrenia. Methods This observational cohort study used routine health data collected from a mental health hospital in Beijing, China. The study included 1057 inpatients who had schizophrenia onset within 3 years. History of suicidal behavior was coded from reviewing medical notes according to the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Information on antipsychotic use during hospitalization was extracted from the prescription records. Time to clozapine use was analyzed using Cox regression models adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical covariates. Results The prevalence rates of self-harm, suicidal behavior, and suicide attempt were 12.3%, 7.5%, and 5.4%, respectively. A history of self-harm history was positively associated with clozapine uses upon admission (4.1% vs. 0.8%, exact p = 0.009). Among those who had not used clozapine and had no clozapine contraindication, A history of suicidal behavior increased the possibility of switch to clozapine within 56 days after admission (Hazard Ratio[95% CI], 6.09[2.08–17.83]) or during hospitalization (4.18[1.62–10.78]). Conclusion The use of clozapine for early-stage schizophrenia was more frequent among those with suicidal behavior than among those without suicidal behavior in China, although the drug instructions do not label its use for suicide risk.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is known to be a common pathogen causing human respiratory infections. On December 7, 2022, the Chinese government announced 10 new measures of Prevention and Control of COVID-19, marking the onset of the post-COVID-19 era. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of MP infections among children from January 2021 to June 2023.

Abstract Background Flies are acknowledged as vectors of diseases transmitted through mechanical means and represent a significant risk to human health. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of enteropathogens carried by flies in Pudong New Area to inform strategies for preventing and controlling flies. Methods Samples were collected from various locations in the area using cage trapping techniques between April and November 2021, encompassing various habitats such as parks, residential areas, restaurants, and farmers’ markets. The main fly species were identified using cryomicrography and taxonomic enumeration, with 20 samples per tube collected from different habitats. Twenty-five enteropathogens were screened using GI_Trial v3 TaqManTM microbial arrays. Results A total of 3,875 flies were collected from 6,400 placements, resulting in an average fly density of 0.61 flies per cage. M. domestica were the most common species at 39.85%, followed by L. sericata at 16.57% and B. peregrina at 13.14%. Out of 189 samples, 93 tested positive for enteropathogens, with nine different pathogens being found. 12.70% of samples exclusively had parasites, a higher percentage than those with only bacteria or viruses. The study found that M. domestica had fewer enteropathogens than L. sericata and B. peregrina, which primarily harbored B. hominis instead of bacteria and viruses such as E. coli, Astrovirus, and Sapovirus. During spring testing, all three fly species exhibited low rates of detecting enteropathogens. M. domestica were found in residential areas with the highest number of pathogen species, totaling six. In contrast, L. sericata and B. peregrina were identified in farmers’ markets with the highest number of pathogen species, totaling six and seven, respectively. Conclusions Flies have the potential to serve as vectors for the transmission of enteropathogens, thereby posing a substantial risk to public health.

Abstract Objective To digitally measure the fixation trajectory of anatomical plates used in the combined reduction of quadrilateral acetabular fractures via the posterior approach, and to develop anatomical plates that align with the characteristics of the pelvis in the Chinese population. Methods Pelvic computed tomography (CT) data from 102 adult patients were collected at the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University. This group included 51 males and 51 females, aged between 20 and 60 years. Using Mimics software (version 21.0), a three-dimensional model of each pelvic data point was reconstructed. The fixation path for the combined reset anatomical steel plate was drawn, where the curves on the fixation path were approximated as arcs. The radius of curvature and length of these curves were measured, and an anatomical steel plate was designed to best fit the pelvic structure. Results The combined anatomical reduction plate fixation system for quadrilateral acetabular fractures using a posterior approach consisted of two parts: a locking plate and a reduction plate. Abstract Background In orthodontics, anterior open bite is a common malocclusion that recurs frequently. Because the causes of anterior open bite are so varied, medical professionals must create customized treatment programs for each patient based on their unique etiology. Through the lowering of the posterior teeth, closure of the anterior teeth gap, and cooperation with intermaxillary traction, the treatment plan outlined in this case study sought to achieve a stable occlusion. Case presentation This case report aims to describe an orthodontic camouflage treatment of a 15-year-old female patient with anterior open bite, arch width discrepancy and a history of temporomandibular joint disorder. The patient was treated with intermaxillary vertical elastics and the multiple edgewise arch wire (MEAW) approach. A satisfactory occlusion with a neutral molar relationship was attained after 29 months of orthodontic therapy. The condylography recording showed that this patient’s occlusion tended to be more stable both before and after our treatment. The purpose of this case study is to provide an overview of an orthodontic camouflage treatment for a female patient, who had a history of temporomandibular joint disease, anterior open bite, and arch width disparity. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that more attention should be paid to levelling the occlusal plane, intrusion of the molars, decompression of temporomandibular joints and the etiology factors of malocclusion during the orthodontic period for those patients with anterior open bite.

Purposes Zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial-based targeting drug delivery system has shown broad application prospects in the field of tumor therapy since the complex is constructed by using carbon nanomaterials with good stability and biocompatibility as drug carries and carries drugs, genes, and targeting components. Methods In this review, the structure of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial as drug carriers, the construction of targeting drug delivery systems, and their applications in chemotherapy, gene therapy, and integration of diagnosis and treatment are reviewed. First, the structure of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial is classified. Second, the construction strategies of carbon nanomaterial-based targeting drug delivery system are summarized from two aspects: targeting modification and drug loading. Finally, the application advances of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial-based targeting drug delivery system is reviewed, and the current problems they face in tumor treatment are presented. Conclusions This work provides some theoretical support and practical experience for the extensive application of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial-based targeting drug delivery systems in the biomedical field.

The spacer grid models are important models for simulating the thermal-hydraulics phenomena during reflooding process. The spacer grid pressure drop model, wall heat transfer enhancement model, interfacial heat transfer enhancement model, droplet breakup model, spacer grid re-wet model and grid temperature model are integrated in COSINE multiphase sub-channel code. In this paper, the typical rod bundle heat transfer (RBHT) reflooding tests were selected to assess the spacer grid model in the code. The calculation results show that the spacer grid models can significantly enhance the code predicted heat transfer capacity, accelerate the quench rate and reduce the peak cladding temperature (PCT) during the reflooding process, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. In addition, the deviation of the PCT predicted by the code is reduced from 10% to 7% due to the adoption of the spacer grid models. The spacer grid models have the ability to enhance the interfacial heat transfer between vapor and droplet, therefore the calculated results with the spacer grid models show a significantly faster decrease in vapor temperature than that without the spacer grid models. And the calculated vapor temperatures with spacer grid models are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. The trend of the code predicted spacer grid temperature agrees well with the experimental results, but the code predicted spacer grid temperature is slightly higher than the experimental measurements. Furthermore, the early wetting of the temperature probe located on the spacer grid in the experiment results in a rapid decrease in the spacer grid temperature, however，the code predicted spacer grid temperature does not show as sharp a decrease as the experimental results due to the interpolation method in the calculation of the spacer grid temperature. The spacer grid models adopted in the code can simulate the breakup of droplets across the spacer grid, the diameter ratio of the shattered droplets predicted by the code is in good agreement with the experimental measurements, and the calculation results of the Cheung model are more accurate than those of the Paik model in the test case 7151. In addition to this, the code can predict the trend of droplet velocity near the spacer grid during reflooding process, but the calculated droplet velocity decreases significantly faster than the experimental measurements, and it needs more work in future. In general, the calculated results with the spacer grid models are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the spacer grid models adopted in the code are reasonable and reliable.

Extant studies have empirically tested the main two behavior responses following ostracism: prosocial or antisocial. Few studies have investigated the relationship between ostracism and social withdrawal. According to the temporal need-threat model and the self-verification theory, the present study aimed to examine the influence mechanism of ostracism on social withdrawal, especially the mediating role of self-esteem and the moderating role of rejection sensitivity. A total of 1,315 Chinese high school students (52.6% female) completed a written questionnaire. Results showed that ostracism was positively correlated with social withdrawal. Ostracism not only directly predicted social withdrawal, but also indirectly affected social withdrawal by threatening adolescents’ self-esteem. High rejection sensitivity may help aggravate adolescents’ self-esteem threaten perceive from ostracism. Adolescents with high rejection sensitivity felt a greater threat to self-esteem when ostracized. Findings suggest a new direction for understanding individuals’ responses to ostracism.

In this work, the topology-optimized lattices structures were designed to serve as ductile nylon reinforcements in lattice-enhanced cementitious composites. The mechanical behavior of the prepared composites was examined via a flexural test where the strength and mid-span deflection were especially concerned. The digital image correlation (DIC) approach was employed to monitor and evaluate the failure pattern and strain distribution. Further investigation was conducted on the mechanical effects of two major optimization factors in the lattice design process, namely cell size and optimization volume fracture. Finally, the improved ductile performance of the suggested composites was compared to that of prior works. The results indicated that the proposed topology-optimized lattices significantly promote the mechanical performance of the prepared composites, i.e., strength and ductility. It may present a higher ductility enhancement efficiency than homogenous lattices under an identical volume. The cell size of lattices is inversely related to the enhancing effects, and more extensive optimization volume fracture enhances composite strength and ductility. Compared with previous works, this study gained advancement in terms of printing materials, unit topology, and cement types. The topology-optimized lattice generally provides a novel solution to the ductility enhancement effect, providing both superior performance and greater design flexibility.

BackgroundSodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) are important second-line treatments for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Patients taking SGLT2i have favorable cardiovascular outcomes via various mechanisms, including autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation. This study aimed to use neuro-electrocardiography (neuECG) to test the effects of SGLT2i or DPP4i on the ANS.MethodsPatients with T2DM, who did not reach target hemoglobin (Hb)A1C levels despite metformin treatment, were enrolled. SGLT2i or DPP4i were prescribed randomly unless a compelling indication was present. NeuECG and heart rate were recorded for 10 min before and after a 3-month treatment. The patients were treated according to standard practice and the obtained data for skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) and ANS entropy were analyzed offline.ResultsWe enrolled 96 patients, of which 49 received SGLT2i and 47 received DPP4i. The baseline parameters were similar between the groups. No adverse event was seen during the study period. In the burst analysis of SKNA at baseline, all parameters were similar. After the 3-month treatment, the firing frequency was higher in SGLT2i group (0.104 ± 0.045 vs 0.083 ± 0.033 burst/min, p < 0.05), with increased long firing duration (7.34 ± 3.66 vs 5.906 ± 2.921, p < 0.05) in 3-s aSKNA scale; the other parameters did not show any significant change. By symbolic entropy, the most complex patterns (Rank 3) were found to be significantly higher in SGLT2i-treated patients than in DDP4i-treated group (0.084 ± 0.028 vs 0.07 ± 0.024, p = 0.01) and the direction of change in Rank 3, after SGLT2i treatment, was opposite to that observed in the DDP4i group (0.012 ± 0.036 vs. −0.005 ± 0.037, p = 0.024). Our findings demonstrated the favorable autonomic modulation by SGLTi and the detrimental effects of DPP4i on ANS.ConclusionWe demonstrated the autonomic modulation by SGLTi and DPP4i using SKNA in patients with DM, which might provide insights into the favorable outcomes of SGLT2i. Furthermore, we refined the analytical methods of neuECG, which uses SKNA to evaluate autonomic function.

BackgroundCircadian rhythm disruptions are a common concern for poststroke patients undergoing rehabilitation and might negatively impact their functional outcomes. ObjectiveOur research aimed to uncover unique patterns and disruptions specific to poststroke rehabilitation patients and identify potential differences in specific rest-activity rhythm indicators when compared to inpatient controls with non–brain-related lesions, such as patients with spinal cord injuries. MethodsWe obtained a 7-day recording with a wearable actigraphy device from 25 poststroke patients (n=9, 36% women; median age 56, IQR 46-71) and 25 age- and gender-matched inpatient control participants (n=15, 60% women; median age 57, IQR 46.5-68.5). To assess circadian rhythm, we used a nonparametric method to calculate key rest-activity rhythm indicators—relative amplitude, interdaily stability, and intradaily variability. Relative amplitude, quantifying rest-activity rhythm amplitude while considering daily variations and unbalanced amplitudes, was calculated as the ratio of the difference between the most active 10 continuous hours and the least active 5 continuous hours to the sum of these 10 and 5 continuous hours. We also examined the clinical correlations between rest-activity rhythm indicators and delirium screening tools, such as the 4 A’s Test and the Barthel Index, which assess delirium and activities of daily living. ResultsPatients who had a stroke had higher least active 5-hour values compared to the control group (median 4.29, IQR 2.88-6.49 vs median 1.84, IQR 0.67-4.34; P=.008). The most active 10-hour values showed no significant differences between the groups (stroke group: median 38.92, IQR 14.60-40.87; control group: median 31.18, IQR 18.02-46.84; P=.93). The stroke group presented a lower relative amplitude compared to the control group (median 0.74, IQR 0.57-0.85 vs median 0.88, IQR 0.71-0.96; P=.009). Further analysis revealed no significant differences in other rest-activity rhythm metrics between the two groups. Among the patients who had a stroke, a negative correlation was observed between the 4 A’s Test scores and relative amplitude (ρ=–0.41; P=.045). Across all participants, positive correlations emerged between the Barthel Index scores and both interdaily stability (ρ=0.34; P=.02) and the most active 10-hour value (ρ=0.42; P=.002). ConclusionsThis study highlights the relevance of circadian rhythm disruptions in poststroke rehabilitation and provides insights into potential diagnostic and prognostic implications for rest-activity rhythm indicators as digital biomarkers.

Neutralization slag (NS) of copper smelting is a waste residue mainly composed of calcium sulfate, which is produced during the process of metal smelting. The large accumulation and storage of NS poses a significant threat to the environment. Therefore, it is imperative to explore a new economically and environmentally friendly approach for recycling NS. This study proposes a method for preparing a new eco-friendly geopolymer material by utilizing NS. A geopolymer with satisfactory mechanical properties was created by employing a hybrid solid activator consisting of CaO-Na2SiO3. The effects of hybrid solid alkali activators calcium oxide (CaO)/sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) ratio on the hydration properties of the NS-based geopolymer were studied, and its curing mechanism was discussed. The results show that, when the hybrid solid activator CaO/Na2SiO3 ratio was 3:1, the maximum 28 d compressive strength of the geopolymer reached 27.8 MPa. The solid activator at a suitable ratio can accelerate the hydration reaction, form higher amounts of C-A-S-H gel and ettringite, reduce the proportion of harmful macropores in the geopolymer, and improve the microstructure of the geopolymer. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test confirmed that the NS-based geopolymer had a solidification effect on heavy metals. The leaching concentration of elemental Pb from the neutralised slag feedstock was 7.241 mg/L, while the lowest concentration was 0.286 mg/L in the NS based geopolymer. As a green cementitious material, the NS-based geopolymer is expected to be applied in engineering practice.

Abstract Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of postoperative recurrence or metastasis in patients with low-risk stromal tumors, in order to take individualized postoperative management and treatment for patients with low-risk GISTs with relatively high recurrence. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological and follow-up data of patients with GISTs who underwent surgical resection in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from March 2010 to December 2021. A total of 282 patients with low-risk GISTs were included, none of whom were treated with imatinib. Univariate and multivariate Cox analysis and survival curves were used to explore the relationship between clinical features and recurrence or metastasis in patients with low-risk GISTs. Results Of the 282 patients with low-risk GISTs who met inclusion criteria, 14 (4.96%) had recurrence or metastasis. There was a correlation between tumor size, primary site, resection type, Ki67 index, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and CD34 expression and postoperative recurrence or metastasis of GISTs (P < 0.05). Subsequently, multifactorial analysis showed that tumor primary site, tumor size, and Ki67 index were independent risk factors affecting postoperative recurrent or metastasis in patients with low-risk GISTs (P < 0.05). Ultimately, According to Kaplan-Meier analysis, non-gastric primary tumors, larger tumors, and high Ki67 index were significantly associated with poor progression-free survival ( PFS ). Conclusions Tumor location, tumor size and Ki-67 were independent risk factors for postoperative recurrence and metastasis in patients with low-risk GISTs. Based on the 2008 modified NIH recurrence risk grading system, combined with the above three factors, it can be used to evaluate the prognosis of patients with low-risk GISTs and provide personalized postoperative review and follow-up management recommendations.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer and belongs to the category of malignant tumors of the thyroid gland. Autophagy plays an important role in PTC. The purpose of this study is to develop a novel diagnostic model using autophagy-related genes (ARGs) in patients. In this study, RNA sequencing data of PTC samples and normal samples were obtained from GSE33630 and GSE29265. Then, we analyzed GSE33630 datasets and identified 127 DE-ARGs. Functional enrichment analysis suggested that 127 DE-ARGs were mainly enriched in pathways in cancer, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, toll-like receptor pathway, MAPK pathway, apoptosis, neurotrophin signaling pathway, and regulation of autophagy. Subsequently, CALCOCO2, DAPK1, and RAC1 among the 127 DE-ARGs were identified as diagnostic genes by support vector machine recursive feature elimination and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithms. Then, we developed a novel diagnostic model using CALCOCO2, DAPK1, and RAC1 and its diagnostic value was confirmed in GSE29265 and our cohorts. Importantly, CALCOCO2 may be a critical regulator involved in immune microenvironment because its expression was related to many types of immune cells. Overall, we developed a novel diagnostic model using CALCOCO2, DAPK1, and RAC1 which can be used as diagnostic markers of PTC.

Abstract Cockroaches are considered mechanical transmitters of infectious diseases, posing a threat to human health. This study assessed the potential of cockroaches in food-related environments to mechanically transmit intestinal pathogens. Cockroaches captured with traps were placed together into a low temperature refrigerator at − 80° for 2 h. Standard taxonomic keys and Fluorescent quantitative PCR techniques were applied for species identification and digestive tract etiological examination. A total of 360 cockroach traps were placed, with a positive rate of 20.8%, and 266 cockroaches were captured. In general, compared with other places and areas, the degree of infestation of cockroaches was more serious in catering places and kitchens. Blattella germanica were most found in catering places (40.2%), followed by Periplaneta fuliginosa in schools (22.2%). According to the life stage, among the 128 cockroach samples, 23 were positive for nymphs and 13 were positive for adults. Previously, only three species of the genus Neurigona Rondani of the subfamily Neurigoninae were known from Yunnan Province. Here, we reviewed the species of Neurigona from Yunnan and added the following seven new species: N. apicilata sp. nov., N. basicurva sp. nov., N. brevidigitata sp. nov., N. convexa sp. nov., N. huanglianshana sp. nov., N. quadrimaculata sp. nov., and N. ventriprocessa sp. nov. All seven new species are sympatric and were collected from below a reservoir in the Huanglianshan Nature Reserve in Yunnan using three Malaise traps in 2019. This suggests a very high species richness in the Yunnan fauna. A key to the species of Neurigona from Chinese mainland is provided.

Abstract Several studies have demonstrated that exosomes (Exos) are involved in the regulation of macrophage polarization and osteoclast differentiation. However, the characteristics as well as roles of exosomes from human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs-Exos) in M1/M2 macrophage polarization and osteoclast differentiation remain unclear. Here, periodontal ligament cells were successfully extracted by method of improved Type-I collagen enzyme digestion. hPDLCs-Exos were extracted by ultracentrifugation. hPDLCs-Exos were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and western blotting (WB). Osteoclast differentiation was evaluated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), WB and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. M1/M2 macrophage polarization were evaluated by RT-qPCR and WB. The results showed hPDLCs-Exos promoted osteoclast differentiation and M2 macrophage polarization, but inhibited M1 macrophage polarization. Moreover, M1 macrophages inhibited osteoclast differentiation, whereas M2 macrophages promoted osteoclast differentiation. It has shown that hPDLCs-Exos promoted osteoclast differentiation by inhibiting M1 and promoting M2 macrophage polarization.

Abstract Background Traditional knowledge associated with medicinal food plants (MFPs) plays a vital role in fighting hidden hunger and safeguarding the health of local people. MFPs resources are abundant in the Gaoligongshan area, a biosphere reserve with the richest biocultural diversity in China. Local people of different linguistic groups also have rich traditional botanical knowledge. However, there are still few comprehensive and systematic studies on MFPs there. Methods Ethnobotanical investigation including market survey, semi-structured interviews, free listing and key informant interviews was conducted in the Gaoligongshan area, Western Yunnan, Southwest China. A total of 13 local farmers’ markets were selected and information about medicinal food plants, including food categories, medicinal and edible parts, modes of consumption, medicinal effects, and distribution were collected. The relative occurrence frequency (RFO) and cultural food significance index (CFSI) were calculated to identify the culturally significant MFPs. Results A total of 184 species of MFPs, belonging to 83 families, were collected in the Gaoligongshan area, including vegetables (77), medicinal diets (26), fruits (25), spices (18), herbal tea (13), tea substitutes (11), substitutes for staple food (8), nuts (5), oils and fats (4), and dye material (1). The most frequently used families were Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Apiaceae, with 11, 10, and 9 species, respectively. The most frequently used plant parts were the stems, followed by fruits and leaves. Based on the evaluation results of the CFSI and RFO indices, 18 species of MFPs with magnificent local cultural importance have been screened out, such as Houttuynia cordata, Eryngium foetidum, Sechium edule, Centella asiatica and Pseudocydonia sinensis. Conclusion These findings have guiding significance for conservation of traditional knowledge associated with MFPs and facilitation of scientific utilization of MFPs to meet local people’s needs for a healthy life.

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder that presents a diagnostic challenge due to symptom overlap with other disorders. Neuromelanin (NM) imaging is a promising biomarker for PD, but adoption has been limited, in part due to subpar performance at standard MRI field strengths. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of ultra-high field 7T NM-sensitive imaging in the diagnosis of PD versus controls and essential tremor (ET), as well as NM differences among PD subtypes. A retrospective case-control study was conducted including PD patients, ET patients, and controls. 7T NM-sensitive 3D-GRE was acquired, and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) volumes, contrast ratios, and asymmetry indices were calculated. Statistical analyses, including general linear models and ROC curves, were employed. Twenty-one PD patients, 13 ET patients, and 18 controls were assessed. PD patients exhibited significantly lower SNpc volumes compared to non-PD subjects. SNpc total volume showed 100% sensitivity and 96.8% specificity (AUC = 0.998) for differentiating PD from non-PD and 100% sensitivity and 95.2% specificity (AUC = 0.996) in differentiating PD from ET. BackgroundHuman biological rhythms are commonly assessed through physical activity (PA) measurement, but mental activity may offer a more substantial reflection of human biological rhythms. ObjectiveThis study proposes a novel approach based on human-smartphone interaction to compute mental activity, encompassing general mental activity (GMA) and working mental activity (WMA). MethodsA total of 24 health care professionals participated, wearing wrist actigraphy devices and using the “Staff Hours” app for more than 457 person-days, including 332 workdays and 125 nonworkdays. PA was measured using actigraphy, while GMA and WMA were assessed based on patterns of smartphone interactions. To model WMA, machine learning techniques such as extreme gradient boosting and convolutional neural networks were applied, using human-smartphone interaction patterns and GPS-defined work hours. The data were organized by date and divided into person-days, with an 80:20 split for training and testing data sets to minimize overfitting and maximize model robustness. The study also adopted the M10 metric to quantify daily activity levels by calculating the average acceleration during the 10-hour period of highest activity each day, which facilitated the assessment of the interrelations between PA, GMA, and WMA and sleep indicators. Phase differences, such as those between PA and GMA, were defined using a second-order Butterworth filter and Hilbert transform to extract and calculate circadian rhythms and instantaneous phases. This calculation involved subtracting the phase of the reference signal from that of the target signal and averaging these differences to provide a stable and clear measure of the phase relationship between the signals. Additionally, multilevel modeling explored associations between sleep indicators (total sleep time, midpoint of sleep) and next-day activity levels, accounting for the data’s nested structure. Improving the heat resistance of bio-based and biodegradable polyesters is of great significance to extend their applications. Herein, N,N’-trans-1,4-cyclohexane-bis(pyrrolidone-4-methyl carboxylate) (T-CBPMC) was prepared through efficient Michael-addition reaction between dimethyl itaconate and trans-1,4-cyclohexanediamine. The obtained T-CBPMC was copolymerized into aliphatic poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), and a series of PBSPs copolymers with T-CBPMC (BP) molar percentages between 41−80 mol % and weight average molecular weight (Mw) values ranging between 5.77*104 and 6.67*104 g/mol were prepared. BP units efficiently facilitated the melting temperature (203-251 °C) and isothermal-crystallization rate (t1/2 < 20 s) of PBSPs, endowing the highest heat resistance among commercial biodegradable polyesters, which helps maintain stable in pasteurization, high-temperature disinfection, and microwave environments. Moreover, these copolymers displayed remarkable mechanical, gas barrier properties and degradability. PBSP40-PBSP60 obtained high elastic modulus (335–872 MPa) and tensile strength (24.7–31.5 MPa), and good toughness simultaneously. Multiple-ring structures and large steric hindrance of BP units resulted in superior O2 barrier performance than that of non-degradable PET films. Importantly, the PBSP copolyesters showed obvious degradation in water environments and relatively better enzymatic degradation. It was interesting to find that even with 70 % of the BP units, the PBSP copolyesters still retained hydrolysis ability. The resulting PBSP copolyesters open the way for alternative candidates of biodegradable packaging materials with rapid crystallization, high heat-resistance and gas barrier.

ObjectiveTo investigate parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward adolescent depression.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2022 and October 2023 at The First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University among parents of adolescents diagnosed with depression. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the parents’ demographic characteristics and KAP toward adolescent depression.ResultsA total of 522 questionnaires were collected from parents of depressed adolescents. Among the participants, 383 (73.37%) were female. In addition, 426 participants (81.61%) had children aged 14–18. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 9.09 ± 2.37 (possible range: 0–12), 37.04 ± 4.11 (possible range: 11–55), and 31.53 ± 3.84 (possible range: 8–40), respectively. BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the relationships between adiposity and circadian rhythm and compare the measurement of circadian rhythm using both actigraphy and a smartphone app that tracks human-smartphone interactions. ObjectiveWe hypothesized that the app-based measurement may provide more comprehensive information, including light-sensitive melatonin secretion and social rhythm, and have stronger correlations with adiposity indicators. MethodsWe enrolled a total of 78 participants (mean age 41.5, SD 9.9 years; 46/78, 59% women) from both an obesity outpatient clinic and a workplace health promotion program. All participants (n=29 with obesity, n=16 overweight, and n=33 controls) were required to wear a wrist actigraphy device and install the Rhythm app for a minimum of 4 weeks, contributing to a total of 2182 person-days of data collection. The Rhythm app estimates sleep and circadian rhythm indicators by tracking human-smartphone interactions, which correspond to actigraphy. We examined the correlations between adiposity indices and sleep and circadian rhythm indicators, including sleep time, chronotype, and regularity of circadian rhythm, while controlling for physical activity level, age, and gender. ResultsSleep onset and wake time measurements did not differ significantly between the app and actigraphy; however, wake after sleep onset was longer (13.5, SD 19.5 minutes) with the app, resulting in a longer actigraphy-measured total sleep time (TST) of 20.2 (SD 66.7) minutes. The obesity group had a significantly longer TST with both methods. App-measured circadian rhythm indicators were significantly lower than their actigraphy-measured counterparts. The obesity group had significantly lower interdaily stability (IS) than the control group with both methods. The multivariable-adjusted model revealed a negative correlation between BMI and app-measured IS (P=.007). Body fat percentage (BF%) and visceral adipose tissue area (VAT) showed significant correlations with both app-measured IS and actigraphy-measured IS. The app-measured midpoint of sleep showed a positive correlation with both BF% and VAT. Actigraphy-measured TST exhibited a positive correlation with BMI, VAT, and BF%, while no significant correlation was found between app-measured TST and either BMI, VAT, or BF%. ConclusionsOur findings suggest that IS is strongly correlated with various adiposity indicators. Further exploration of the role of circadian rhythm, particularly measured through human-smartphone interactions, in obesity prevention could be warranted.

Background and Purpose: No consensus exists on the ideal duration of rehabilitation in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The aim of this study is to identify demographic and clinical characteristics associated with rehabilitation duration (RD) in patients with ICH during hospitalization. Methods: This retrospective study followed consecutive patients admitted to a tertiary care center between 2016 and 2019 with primary diagnosis of ICH. The primary outcome, RD was calculated by adding the total number of therapy (speech, occupational, and physical) minutes received during admission, divided by the hospital length of stay. Variables abstracted included demographic and clinical characteristics (ICH score, neurosurgical procedure). Multiple linear regression models were used to measure adjusted association between select predictors and mean RD. Results: A total of 316 ICH patients (62.5 ± 15.9 years, 49 % White) were included in the final analysis. Compared to Whites, other racial minorities (β= -9.017, p = 0.002) received rehabilitation therapy for a significantly shorter duration in the adjusted model. Age was significantly associated with having higher RD (β=0.320, p < 0.001). Patients with lobar ICH (β= -7.486, p = 0.014) had significantly shorter RD compared to deep. ICH score was significantly associated with having a lower RD (β= -8.624, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Age, race, ICH score, and location were significantly associated with RD. Non-White patients had significantly shorter RD, indicating a potential racial disparity in the rehabilitation of patients with ICH.

In recent years, global climate changes and human activities have significantly reshaped ecosystems, posing a challenging aspect for research—accurately understanding how climate and human activities affect vegetation. This study employs the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) model to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution of Net Primary Productivity (NPP) in the Central Yunnan Urban Agglomeration (CYUA) from 1982 to 2019. It measures human activity intensity using the Comprehensive Human Activity Intensity Index (CHAII), which is derived from human activity intensity of land surface, population density, economic conditions, and remote sensing data. Spatial autocorrelation analysis is used to assess human activity clustering. The study employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to quantify the impacts of climate change and human activities on NPP in CYUA across different spatiotemporal scales. The findings are as follows: (1) Human activities in CYUA exhibit a spatial distribution radiating from Kunming City and display distinct spatial autocorrelation characteristics. (2) Increasing human activity reduces NPP. In areas with higher and more concentrated human activity, it suppresses NPP, while positively affecting neighboring areas. The threshold of human activity intensity affecting NPP varies across space and time, with higher thresholds in cities with greater human activity intensity compared to those with lower intensity. (3) NPP and precipitation exhibit a closely positive correlation. Reduced precipitation weakens this correlation. Rising temperatures since 2000 have negatively impacted NPP, especially in regions with higher human activity intensity. (4) This study provides a new institutional perspective for the analysis and formulation of adaptive strategies in regions where ecosystems are jointly impacted by climate change and human activities. Future research can further refine the study of NPP responses to human activities in cities with varying development levels, diverse urban organizational structures, and different urban expansion patterns.

Magnesium-based composites are a focal point in biomaterials research. However, the rapid degradation rate of magnesium alloys does not align with the healing time of bone tissue. Additionally, the host reaction caused by magnesium implantation hampers its full osteogenic potential. To maintain an appropriate microenvironment, it is important to enhance both corrosion resistance and osteogenic activity of the magnesium matrix. In this study, a composite scaffold composed of mineralized collagen and magnesium alloy was utilized to investigate the regulatory effect of mineralized collagen on mouse macrophages and evaluate its impact on mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in terms of osteogenesis, immune response, and macrophage-induced osteogenic differentiation. This experiment examined the biocompatibility of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and macrophage-induced osteogenic differentiation in vitro, and examined the expression levels of relevant pathways proteins. Magnesium calcium alloys/mineralized collagen exhibited extensive spreading, facilitated by broad and abundant pseudopodia that firmly adhered them to the material surface and promoted growth and pseudopodia formation. The findings revealed that magnesium calcium alloy/mineralized collagen scaffold materials induced osteogenic differentiation mainly through M2 polarization of macrophages. This effect was mainly mediated by promoting the integrin α2β1-FAK-ERK1/2 signaling pathways and inhibiting the RANK signaling pathways.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) rank among the most prevalent types of head and neck cancer globally. Unfortunately, a significant number of patients receive their diagnoses at advanced stages, limiting the effectiveness of available treatments. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a pivotal player in HNSCC development, with macrophages holding a central role. Macrophages demonstrate diverse functions within the TME, both inhibiting and facilitating cancer progression. M1 macrophages are characterized by their phagocytic and immune activities, while M2 macrophages tend to promote inflammation and immunosuppression. Striking a balance between these different polarization states is essential for maintaining overall health, yet in the context of tumors, M2 macrophages typically prevail. Recent efforts have been directed at controlling the polarization states of macrophages, paving the way for novel approaches to cancer treatment. Various drugs and immunotherapies, including innovative treatments based on macrophages like engineering macrophages and CAR-M cell therapy, have been developed. This article provides an overview of the roles played by macrophages in HNSCC, explores potential therapeutic targets and strategies, and presents fresh perspectives on the future of HNSCC treatment.

Abstract Heart rhythm complexity (HRC), a subtype of heart rate variability (HRV), is an important tool to investigate cardiovascular disease. In this study, we aimed to analyze serial changes in HRV and HRC metrics in patients with inferior ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) within 1 year postinfarct and explore the association between HRC and postinfarct left ventricular (LV) systolic impairment. We prospectively enrolled 33 inferior STEMI patients and 74 control subjects and analyzed traditional linear HRV and HRC metrics in both groups, including detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and multiscale entropy (MSE). We also analyzed follow-up postinfarct echocardiography for 1 year. The STEMI group had significantly lower standard deviation of RR interval (SDNN), and DFAα2 within 7 days postinfarct (acute stage) comparing to control subjects. LF power was consistently higher in STEMI group during follow up. The MSE scale 5 was higher at acute stage comparing to control subjects and had a trend of decrease during 1-year postinfarct. The MSE area under scale 1–5 showed persistently lower than control subjects and progressively decreased during 1-year postinfarct. To predict long-term postinfarct LV systolic impairment, the slope between MSE scale 1 to 5 (slope 1–5) had the best predictive value. MSE slope 1–5 also increased the predictive ability of the linear HRV metrics in both the net reclassification index and integrated discrimination index models. In conclusion, HRC and LV contractility decreased 1 year postinfarct in inferior STEMI patients, and MSE slope 1–5 was a good predictor of postinfarct LV systolic impairment.

Abstract From an initial pool of 2303 studies, ten eligible and potential studies were selected through rigor inclusion and exclusion criteria for this systematic review to examine music therapy's effect on dementia. The review included 967 participants, with the majority being female. A significant number of studies were conducted in Taiwan. Although several cognitive ability assessment methods were employed in the selected studies, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was the most commonly used tool for evaluating the effects of music therapy on dementia. Overall, the current review demonstrates that music therapy can be a valuable strategy for treating patients with dementia, with its outcomes including improved cognitive function and potentially slowing the progression of the disease's severity. Therefore, this study can significantly contribute to future studies and practices aimed at using music therapy to treat dementia.

Abstract Background To investigate the risk factors associated with the development of occult peritoneal metastasis in advanced gastric cancer, and establish and externally validate a nomogram for predicting the occurrence of occult peritoneal metastasis in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Methods A total of 111 patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent laparoscopic exploration or peritoneal lavage cytology examination at the Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School from August 2014 to December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients diagnosed between 2019 and 2021 were assigned to the training set (n = 64), while those diagnosed between 2014 and 2016 constituted the external validation set (n = 47). In the training set, patients were classified into two groups based on preoperative imaging and postoperative pathological data: the occult peritoneal metastasis group (OPMG) and the peritoneal metastasis negative group (PMNG). In the validation set, patients were classified into the occult peritoneal metastasis group (CY1P0, OPMG) and the peritoneal metastasis negative group (CY0P0, PMNG) based on peritoneal lavage cytology results. A nomogram was constructed using univariate and multivariate analyses. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using Harrell’s C-index, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), decision curve analysis (DCA), and calibration plots. Results This study analyzed 22 potential variables of OPM in 111 gastric cancer patients who underwent laparoscopic exploration or peritoneal lavage cytology examination. Logistic regression analysis results showed that Lauren classification, CLDN18.2 score and CA125 were independent risk factors for OPM in patients with gastric cancer. We developed a simple and easy-to-use prediction nomogram of occult peritoneal metastasis in advanced gastric cancer. This nomogram had an excellent diagnostic performance. The AUC of the bootstrap model in the training set was 0.771 and in the validation set was 0.711. This model showed a good fitting and calibration and positive net benefits in decision curve analysis. Conclusion We have developed a prediction nomogram of OPM for gastric cancer. This novel nomogram has the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy for occult peritoneal metastasis in gastric cancer patients.

This study aims to evaluate airborne transmission risk in university towns during the COVID-19 pandemic based on surveys of indoor environmental quality (IEQ). Both on-site measurements and questionnaire surveys were carried out in public buildings in university towns in Changsha, China. Air temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration in one library, ten classrooms, eight canteens, seven restaurants, and sixteen malls were measured. 2220 valid questionnaires concerning occupants’ sensation on thermal environment, air movement, and indoor air quality were collected. A 3-level evaluation method of airborne transmission risk that is dependent on building type and indoor CO2 concentration was developed. Excessive CO2 concentration is found in library (1045 ppm), classrooms (1151 ppm), restaurants (1242 ppm), and malls (1057 ppm). The percentage time of “high risk” accounts for 18–100% in these buildings. The results reveal a serious problem: numerous public buildings in China and probably other resource limited countries are not basically prepared and equipped to cope with airborne transmission. This fact should be taken into account when developing guidelines and formulating mitigation measures. Real-time monitoring and displaying IEQ and thus the transmission risk level should be an important way to be widely implemented in public buildings.

Bioremediation has drawn widespread concern in passivating heavy metals, but the intense toxicity of heavy metals to biological cells limits the application of functional strains. Herein, goethite-modified biochar (GMB) was chosen as the carrier to immobilize phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) of strain L1 for lead and cadmium remediation. Batch experiments showed that the GMB-L1 possessed excellent adsorption performance with a maximum adsorption of 496.54 and 178.18 mg/g for Pb and Cd, respectively. Moreover, adding GMB-L1 in contaminated soil converted heavy metals (Pb and Cd) into more stable fractions and reduced TCLP-extracted heavy metal concentrations (73.24% of Pb and 57.25% of Cd). The GMB-L1 was proved to accomplish Pb and Cd remediation via the process of chemical precipitation, surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and biomineralization, which was accompanied by the transformation of heavy metals into a more stable crystal structure, such as Pb5(PO4)3OH and Cd5(PO4)3OH. Therefore, the co-system of GMB and strain L1 could be regarded as a prospective option for efficiently remedying environmental heavy metal pollution.

ObjectiveTo establish a radiomics model based on intratumoral and peritumoral features extracted from pre-treatment CT to predict the major pathological response (MPR) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy.MethodsA total of 148 NSCLC patients who underwent neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy from two centers (SRRSH and ZCH) were retrospectively included. The SRRSH dataset (n=105) was used as the training and internal validation cohort. Radiomics features of intratumoral (T) and peritumoral regions (P1 = 0-5mm, P2 = 5-10mm, and P3 = 10-15mm) were extracted from pre-treatment CT. Intra- and inter- class correlation coefficients and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were used to feature selection. Four single ROI models mentioned above and a combined radiomics (CR: T+P1+P2+P3) model were established by using machine learning algorithms. Clinical factors were selected to construct the combined radiomics-clinical (CRC) model, which was validated in the external center ZCH (n=43). The performance of the models was assessed by DeLong test, calibration curve and decision curve analysis.ResultsHistopathological type was the only independent clinical risk factor. Background Racial and ethnic minority groups are at a higher stroke risk and have poor poststroke outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of race reporting and proportions of race and ethnicity representation in stroke‐related clinical trials. Methods and Results This is a descriptive study of stroke‐related clinical trials completed between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2020, and registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. Trials conducted in the United States, related to stroke and enrolling participants ≥18 years, were considered eligible. Trials were reviewed for availability of published results, data on race and ethnicity distribution, and trial characteristics. Overall, 60.1% of published trials reported race or ethnicity of participants, with a 2.6‐fold increase in reporting between 2010 and 2020. White patients represented 65.0% of the participants, followed by 24.8% Black, 2.4% Asian or Pacific Islander, and
