Using the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have imaged [C II] 157.74 and [O I] 63.18 micron line emission from a bright photodissociation region (PDR) associated with an ionized ``bubble'' located in the Nessie Nebula, a filamentary infrared dark cloud. A comparison with ATCA data reveals a classic PDR structure, with a uniform progression from ionized gas, to photodissociated gas, and on to molecular gas from the bubble's interior to its exterior. [O I] line emission from the bubble's PDR reveals self-absorption features. Toward a FIR-bright protostar, both [O I] and [C II] show an absorption feature at a velocity of $-18$ km/s, the same velocity as an unrelated foreground molecular cloud. Since the gas density in typical molecular clouds is well below the [O I] and [C II] critical densities, the excitation temperatures for both lines are low (~20 K). The Meudon models demonstrate that the surface of a molecular cloud, externally illuminated by a standard G_0 = 1 interstellar radiation field, can produce absorption features in both transitions. Thus, the commonly observed [O I] and [C II] self-absorption and absorption features plausibly arise from the subthermally excited, externally illuminated, photodissociated envelopes of molecular clouds. The luminous young stellar object AGAL337.916-00.477, located precisely where the expanding bubble strikes the Nessie filament, is associated with two shock tracers: NH3 (3,3) maser emission and SiO 2-1 emission, indicating interaction between the bubble and the filament. The interaction of the expanding bubble with its parental dense filament has triggered star formation.

The [CII] 158$\mu$m fine-structure line is the dominant cooling line of moderate-density photodissociation regions (PDRs) illuminated by moderately bright far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation fields. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of gas and dust in PDRs. One focus is a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by the [CII] line to test models of the photoelectric heating of neutral gas by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules and very small grains. We make use of a one-square-degree map of velocity-resolved [CII] line emission toward the Orion Nebula complex, and split this out into the individual spatial components, the expanding Veil Shell, the surface of OMC4, and the PDRs associated with the compact HII region of M43 and the reflection nebula NGC 1977. We employed Herschel far-infrared photometric images to determine dust properties. Moreover, we compared with Spitzer mid-infrared photometry to trace hot dust and large molecules, and velocity-resolved IRAM 30m CO(2-1) observations of the molecular gas. The [CII] intensity is tightly correlated with PAH emission in the IRAC 8$\mu$m band and far-infrared emission from warm dust. The correlation between [CII] and CO(2-1) is very different in the four subregions and is very sensitive to the detailed geometry. Constant-density PDR models are able to reproduce the observed [CII], CO(2-1), and integrated far-infrared (FIR) intensities. We observe strong variations in the photoelectric heating efficiency in the Veil Shell behind the Orion Bar and these variations are seemingly not related to the spectral properties of the PAHs. The [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex stems mainly from moderately illuminated PDR surfaces. Future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope can shine light on the PAH properties that may be linked to these variations.

Ionized interstellar gas is an important component of the interstellar medium and its lifecycle. The recent evidence for a widely distributed highly ionized warm interstellar gas with a density intermediate between the warm ionized medium (WIM) and compact HII regions suggests that there is a major gap in our understanding of the interstellar gas. Here we investigate the properties of the dense warm ionized medium (D-WIM) in the Milky Way using spectrally resolved SOFIA GREAT [NII] 205 micron line emission and Green Bank Telescope hydrogen radio recombination lines (RRL) data, supplemented by Herschel PACS [NII] 122 micron data, and spectrally resolved 12CO. We observed eight lines of sight in the 20deg 50% of the observed [CII] intensity along these LOS. The kinetic temperatures we derive are too low to explain the presence of N+ resulting from electron collisional ionization and/or proton charge transfer of atomic nitrogen. The [CII] $158\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ fine-structure line is one of the dominant coolants of the neutral interstellar medium. It is hence one of the brightest far-infrared emission lines and can be observed not only in star-forming regions throughout the Galaxy, but also in the diffuse interstellar medium and in distant galaxies. [CII] line emission has been suggested to be a powerful tracer of star-formation. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of interstellar gas and dust. This includes a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by the [CII] line to test models of gas heating. We make use of a one-square-degree map of velocity-resolved [CII] line emission towards the Orion Nebula complex, including M43 and NGC 1977. The [CII] intensity is tightly correlated with PAH emission in the IRAC $8\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ band and far-infrared emission from warm dust. The correlation between [CII] and CO(2-1) is affected by the detailed geometry of the region. We find particularly low [CII]-over-FIR intensity ratios towards large columns of (warm and cold) dust, which suggest the interpretation of the "[CII] deficit" in terms of a "FIR excess". A slight decrease in the FIR line-over-continuum intensity ratio can be attributed to a decreased heating efficiency of the gas. We find that, at the mapped spatial scales, predictions of the star-formation rate from [CII] emission underestimate the star-formation rate calculated from YSO counts in the Orion Nebula complex by an order of magnitude. [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex arises dominantly in the cloud surfaces, many viewed in edge-on geometry. [CII] emission from extended faint cloud surfaces may contribute significantly to the total [CII] emission on galactic scales.

The Orion Molecular Cloud is the nearest massive-star forming region. Massive stars have profound effects on their environment due to their strong radiation fields and stellar winds. Velocity-resolved observations of the [CII] $158\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ fine-structure line allow us to study the kinematics of UV-illuminated gas. Here, we present a square-degree-sized map of [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex obtained by the upGREAT instrument onboard SOFIA, covering the entire Orion Nebula (M42) plus M43 and the nebulae NGC 1973, 1975, and 1977. We compare the stellar characteristics of these three regions with the kinematics of the expanding bubbles surrounding them. The bubble blown by the O7V star $\theta^1$ Ori C in the Orion Nebula expands rapidly, at $13\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. Simple analytical models reproduce the characteristics of the hot interior gas and the neutral shell of this wind-blown bubble and give us an estimate of the expansion time of $0.2\,\mathrm{Myr}$. M43 with the B0.5V star NU Ori also exhibits an expanding bubble structure, with an expansion velocity of $6\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. Comparison with analytical models for the pressure-driven expansion of H\,{\sc ii} regions gives an age estimate of $0.02\,\mathrm{Myr}$. The bubble surrounding NGC 1973, 1975, and 1977 with the central B1V star 42 Orionis expands at $1.5\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, likely due to the over-pressurized ionized gas as in the case of M43. We derive an age of $0.4\,\mathrm{Myr}$ for this structure. We conclude that the bubble of the Orion Nebula is driven by the mechanical energy input by the strong stellar wind from $\theta^1$ Ori C, while the bubbles associated with M43 and NGC 1977 are caused by the thermal expansion of the gas ionized by their central later-type massive stars.

Determining the properties of the warm ionized medium (WIM) at the leading edge of spiral arms is important for understanding its dynamics and cloud formation. The inner edge of the Scutum arm tangency is a unique location in which to disentangle the WIM from other components. We use high spectral resolution [C II] 158 micron and [N II] 205 micron fine structure line observations taken with the upGREAT and GREAT instruments on SOFIA, along with auxiliary HI and 13CO observations. The observations were in and out of the Galactic plane along 18 lines of sight between longitude 30deg and 32deg. We detect strong [N II] emission throughout the Scutum tangency. At VLSR = 110 to 125 km/s, where there is little, if any, 13CO, we could disentangle the [N II] and [C II] emission that arises from the WIM at the inner edge. We find an average electron density, about 0.9 cm{-3} in the plane, and about 0.4 cm{-3} above the plane. For VLSR < 110 km/s there is [N II] emission tracing highly ionized gas throughout the arm's molecular layer. This ionized gas has a high density, n(e) ~ 30 cm{-3}, and a few percent filling factor. Thus, [N II] and [C II] at the Scutum arm tangency reveal a highly ionized gas with about 10 to 20 times those of the interarm WIM, which is best explained by a model in which the interarm WIM is compressed as it falls into the potential well of the arm. The widespread distribution of [N II] in the molecular layers shows that high density ionized gas is distributed throughout the Scutum arm. The n(e) derived from [N II] for these molecular cloud regions are about 30 cm{-3}, and probably arise in the ionized boundary layers of clouds. This [N II] emission from the ionized boundary layers is probably the result of the shock compression of the WIM as it impacts the arm's neutral gas, but some could arise from extended HII regions., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

In diffuse interstellar clouds the chemistry that leads to the formation of the oxygen bearing ions OH+, H2O+, and H3O+ begins with the ionization of atomic hydrogen by cosmic rays, and continues through subsequent hydrogen abstraction reactions involving H2. Given these reaction pathways, the observed abundances of these molecules are useful in constraining both the total cosmic-ray ionization rate of atomic hydrogen (zeta_H) and molecular hydrogen fraction, f(H2). We present observations targeting transitions of OH+, H2O+, and H3O+ made with the Herschel Space Observatory along 20 Galactic sight lines toward bright submillimeter continuum sources. Both OH+ and H2O+ are detected in absorption in multiple velocity components along every sight line, but H3O+ is only detected along 7 sight lines. From the molecular abundances we compute f(H2) in multiple distinct components along each line of sight, and find a Gaussian distribution with mean and standard deviation 0.042+-0.018. This confirms previous findings that OH+ and H2O+ primarily reside in gas with low H2 fractions. We also infer zeta_H throughout our sample, and find a log-normal distribution with mean log(zeta_H)=-15.75, (zeta_H=1.78x10^-16 s^-1), and standard deviation 0.29 for gas within the Galactic disk, but outside of the Galactic center. This is in good agreement with the mean and distribution of cosmic-ray ionization rates previously inferred from H3+ observations. We present a study of star formation in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy through the association of three star formation indicators: 6.7 GHz CH3OH masers, 22 GHz H2O masers, and enhanced 4.5 micron emission (`green') sources. We explore how star formation in the Galactic center (l < 1.3 deg, |b| < 10', where l and b are Galactic longitude and Galactic latitude) compares with that of the Galactic disk (6 deg < l < 345 deg, |b| < 2 deg). Using an automated algorithm, we search for enhanced 4.5 micron emission sources toward 6.7 GHz CH3OH masers detected in the Parkes Methanol Multibeam Survey. We combine these results with our 22 GHz H2O maser survey of the CMZ carried out with the Mopra telescope. We find that the correlation of CH3OH masers with green sources is a function of Galactic latitude, with a minimum close to b=0 and increasing with |b| (toward the central part of the Galaxy, 6 deg < l < 345 deg, |b| < 2 deg). We find no significant difference between the correlation rate of CH3OH masers with green sources in the CMZ and the disk. This suggests that although the physical conditions of the gas are different in the Galactic center from that of the Galactic disk, once gravitational instability sets in at sufficiently high densities, signatures of star formation appear to be similar in both regions. Moreover, the detection of green sources, even at the distance of the Galactic center, shows that our technique can easily identify the early stages of star formation, especially in low extinction regions of the Galaxy. Through the association of H2O and CH3OH masers, we identify 15 star-forming sites in the CMZ. We find no coincident H2O and CH3OH masers outside the CMZ (with limited H2O maser survey coverage outside the CMZ), possibly indicating a difference in the maser evolutionary sequence for star-forming cores in the Galactic center region and the disk.

Identified as extinction features against the bright Galactic mid-infrared background, infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are thought to harbor the very earliest stages of star and cluster formation. In order to better characterize the properties of their embedded cores, we have obtained new 24um, 60-100um, and sub-millimeter continuum data toward a sample of 38 IRDCs. The 24um Spitzer images reveal that while the IRDCs remain dark, many of the cores are associated with bright 24um emission sources, which suggests that they contain one or more embedded protostars. Combining the 24um, 60-100um, and sub-millimeter continuum data, we have constructed broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 157 of the cores within these IRDCs and, using simple gray-body fits to the SEDs, have estimated their dust temperatures, emissivities, opacities, bolometric luminosities, masses and densities. Based on their Spitzer/IRAC 3-8um colors and the presence of 24um point source emission, we have separated cores that harbor active, high-mass star formation from cores that are quiescent. The active `protostellar' cores typically have warmer dust temperatures and higher bolometric luminosities than the more quiescent, perhaps `pre-protostellar', cores. Because the mass distributions of the populations are similar, however, we speculate that the active and quiescent cores may represent different evolutionary stages of the same underlying population of cores. Although we cannot rule out low-mass star-formation in the quiescent cores, the most massive of them are excellent candidates for the `high-mass starless core' phase, the very earliest in the formation of a high-mass star., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 107 pages in total (72 pages of on-line only material).

The Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey is a new survey of Galactic 13CO (1-0) emission. The survey used the SEQUOIA multi pixel array on the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 14 m telescope to cover a longitude range of l = 18 deg-55.7 deg and a latitude range of |b| < 1 deg, a total of 75.4 square degrees. Using both position-switching and On-The-Fly mapping modes, we achieved an angular sampling of 22 arcsec, better than half of the telescope's 46 arcsec angular resolution. The survey's velocity coverage is -5 to 135 km/s for Galactic longitudes l <= 40 deg and -5 to 85 km/s for Galactic longitudes l > 40 deg. At the velocity resolution of 0.21 km/s, the typical rms sensitivity is sigma(TA*)~0.13 K. The survey comprises a total of 1,993,522 spectra. We show integrated intensity images (zeroth moment maps), channel maps, position-velocity diagrams, and an average spectrum of the completed survey dataset. We also discuss the telescope and instrumental parameters, the observing modes, the data reduction processes, and the emission and noise characteristics of the dataset. We present a multiwavelength study of the infrared dark cloud MSXDC G034.43+00.24. Dust emission, traced by millimeter/submillimeter images obtained with the IRAM, JCMT, and CSO telescopes, reveals three compact cores within this infrared dark cloud with masses of 170--800 Msun and sizes < 0.5 pc. Spitzer 3.6-8.0 um images show slightly extended emission toward these cores, with a spectral enhancement at 4.5 um that probably arises from shocked H2. In addition, the broad line widths (Delta V ~ 10 km/s) of HCN (4-3), and CS (3-2), and the detection of SiO (2-1), observed with the JCMT and IRAM telescopes, also indicate active star formation. Spitzer 24 um images reveal that each of these cores contains a bright, unresolved continuum source; these sources are most likely embedded protostars. Their millimeter to mid-IR continuum spectral energy distributions reveal very high luminosities, 9000-32,000 Lsun.
