Phasor-based interdependencies of multiple harmonic sources, especially Distributed Energy Resources, on distribution networks are analyzed in this paper. A new index, Phasor Harmonic Index (IPH), is proposed by the authors. IPH considers both harmonic source magnitude and phase angle for different harmonic orders. Other commonly used harmonic indices are based solely on magnitude of waveforms. A very detailed model of a distribution network is used in the harmonic assessment. With the help of the detailed distribution network model, the phase couplings and the phase balancing impacts on harmonic propagation between three phases are investigated. Moreover, effects of harmonic source phase angle deviations are analyzed at both the customer side and the substation side. The paper describes the development of an adaptive out-of-step relay, from the formulation of its concept to its field implementation at the Florida-Georgia interface. Adaptive relaying seeks to make adjustments to the relay characteristics as system conditions change, thereby making the relay more attuned to the prevailing power system conditions. The work described here began as a theoretical examination of the out-of-step relaying application, its possible shortcomings, and the opportunities to make adaptive improvements. It is shown that for a system that behaves primarily as a two-machine power system, the out-of-step relay could be made more secure by applying the principle of equal area criterion. The paper describes the theory of such a relay, its hardware configuration, and the system as it is installed in the field. The newly developed technology of synchronized phasor measurements plays an important role in the realization of this relay. The paper includes a summary of the field experience gathered over a period of one year. The paper describes one of the first field measurements of positive sequence voltage phasors at key system buses during a recent switching operation at Plan Scherer of the Georgia Power Company. The phasor measurements were synchronized using time transmissions from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. The data show the first ever observation of power swings recorded via synchronized phasors at several points on an integrated power network. Measurements were made on the Georgia Power Company (GPC) system, the Florida Power and Light (FPL) system, and on the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) system. The disturbance was also simulated on a stability program. Results of the simulation, and a comparison with the observed field data are also included

The power grid is going through significant changes with the introduction of renewable energy sources and the incorporation of smart grid technologies. These rapid advancements necessitate new models and analyses to keep up with the various emergent phenomena they induce. A major prerequisite of such work is the acquisition of well-constructed and accurate network datasets for the power grid infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a robust, scalable framework to synthesize power distribution networks that resemble their physical counterparts for a given region. We use openly available information about interdependent road and building infrastructures to construct the networks. In contrast to prior work based on network statistics, we incorporate engineering and economic constraints to create the networks. Additionally, we provide a framework to create ensembles of power distribution networks to generate multiple possible instances of the network for a given region. The comprehensive dataset consists of nodes with attributes, such as geocoordinates; type of node (residence, transformer, or substation); and edges with attributes, such as geometry, type of line (feeder lines, primary or secondary), and line parameters. For validation, we provide detailed comparisons of the generated networks with actual distribution networks. The generated datasets represent realistic test systems (as compared with standard test cases published by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)) that can be used by network scientists to analyze complex events in power grids and to perform detailed sensitivity and statistical analyses over ensembles of networks.

Background: To our knowledge, there is no useful and accurate prognostic biomarker or biomarkers for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), a tumor with uncertain biological behavior, and unpredictable clinical progress. The purposes of this study were: a) to determine the expresión profile of Connexin 43, Bcl-2, Bax, E-cadherin, and Ki67 in patients with OSCC; b) identify the GJCA1 rs12197797 genotypic composition., Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study using genomic DNA and biopsy samples extracted from the oral mucosa with/without OSCC, older than 18 years, both genders, attended at Facultad de Odontología, Universidad Nacional Córdoba. Immunostaining for Cx43, Bcl-2, Bax, E-cadherin, and Ki67 and genotyping GJA1 rs12197797 by RFLP were performed. Odds Ratio (95% CI), Spearman Coefficient were estimated. Mann-Whitney test was applied to analyze immunostaining between controls/cases (p <0.05 was set for statistical significance)., Results: GG (mutant) was the most frequent genotype in patients with OSCC diagnosis (53.2%) in relation to CC "healthy" genotype (p=0.00487; OR=7.33; CI95% [1.1-54.7]). And, the allele G (mutant) had a presence in 75.5% of OSCC patients. However, no significant association was observed between alleles C/G and diagnosis (p=0.0565). The heterozygous genotype was the most frequent in the patients of both groups Cx43 and E-cadherin markers were lower in OSCCs in relation to controls. Ki67 and Bcl-2 immunolabeling were high on OSCC, and Bax immunomarker was diminished in OSCC., Conclusions: We hypothesized that the oral epithelium losses Connexin 43 and E-cadherin in the membrane, which modifies cell differentiation. The Ki67 and Bcl2 overexpression would increase the cell density in the tissue, by promoting proliferation and decreasing apoptosis. And, this study shows evidence that patients who carry on allele G of GJA1rs12197797 could be at risk of developing OSCC.

The Brazilian economy entered a deep recession in 2015-2016 and since then has shown a sluggish recovery. In this paper, we offer an interpretation for the slow growth based on Minsky's financial instability hypothesis and recent literature on financialization and growth. We analyze the balance sheet of large non-financial companies over the period 2012-2019, a period that comprises the positive investment cycle-initiated during the commodities boom which lasted from the second half of the 2000s until 2014-the 2015-2016 recession, and the period preceding the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on Minsky's taxonomy of financial profiles, we map a proxy for financial instability at the firm level based on Davis et al. (2019). We also propose an aggregate financial stability index. We conclude that after the 2015-2016 recession, companies have been restructuring their debt profile and adopting a defensive behavior, increasing their liquidity preference. Our analysis supports the interpretation that, even with the sharp fall in domestic real interest rates, the degree of confidence on expectations to recover investment in productive assets is low. This corroborates with the thesis that agents' decisions do not respond only to supply stimulus, but are guided by expectations of future returns, which fundamentally depend on the performance of aggregate demand. Objective: Connexins (Cxs) are important to control growth and cell differentiation of dental tissues. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of chronic exposure to sodium fluoride (NaF) on Cxs expression and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in dental pulp, and on morphometric parameters of adult rat mandible and incisors., Design: Three groups of male Wistar rats (22 days-old) were given water containing: (a) 0.3 mg/L (Control), (b) 10 mg/L and (c) 50 mg/L of NaF for eight weeks. Incisor pulp homogenates were prepared for determination of Cx32, Cx43 and Cx45 gene expression, using semi-quantitative RT-PCR, and of ALP activity. Morphometric parameters of mandible and incisors were determined on radiographs., Results: Cx43 gene expression increased with exposure to NaF in a dose-dependent manner. Cx32 mRNA levels were higher than controls in the 10mg/L NaF group only; Cx45 mRNA levels were lower in groups given 10 and 50mg/L of NaF than in controls. ALP activity was higher in both high-NaF dose groups compared to the control group (p<0.05). Lower incisor diameter was lower in the 50 mg/L NaF than in the control group (p<0.01). None of the mandibular growth parameters were affected by NaF treatment., Conclusion: Our results showed that fluorotic alterations in rat incisor were associated with increased Cx43 expression and ALP activity, as well as with changes in the expression pattern of different Cxs in pulp tissue. Background: Turner syndrome (TS) patients usually have low bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of osteoporotic fractures. We have previously demonstrated an association of bb (BsmI polymorphic site) and ff (FokI polymorphic site) vitamin D receptor (VDR) genotypes with reduced BMD in TS patients., Aim: To analyze the relationship between VDR-Cdx2 polymorphism and BMD as well as bone metabolic variables in TS patients., Methods: Fifty-five TS patients and 59 control women were studied. VDR-Cdx2 genotypes were determined using TaqMan probes in a real time thermocycler. Lumbar and femoral BMD were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and serum intact parathyroid hormone, osteocalcin and beta3-CrossLaps were determined by electrochemiluminescence., Results: Patients with genotype GG had higher levels of both osteocalcin and beta-CrossLaps as compared to patients with genotype GA (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively)., Conclusion: Patients carrying genotype GG have higher levels of bone formation and resorption markers. This indicates a more active bone turnover that could impact on their future bone mineral density.

The role of 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) on the intestinal NCX activity was studied in vitamin D-deficient chicks (-D) as well as the hormone effect on NCX1 protein and gene expression and the potential molecular mechanisms underlying the responses. Normal, -D and -D chicks treated with cholecalciferol or 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) were employed. In some experiments, -D chicks were injected with cycloheximide or with cycloheximide and 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) simultaneously. NCX activity was decreased by -D diet, returning to normal values after 50 IU daily of cholecalciferol/10 days or a dose of 1μg calcitriol/kg of b.w. for 15 h. Cycloheximide blocked NCX activity enhancement produced by 1,25(OH)(2)D(3). NCX1 protein and gene expression were diminished by -D diet and enhanced by 1,25(OH)(2)D(3). Vitamin D receptor expression was decreased by -D diet, effect that disappeared after 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) treatment. Rapid effects of 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) on intestinal NCX activity were also demonstrated. The abolition of the rapid effects through addition of Rp-cAMPS and staurosporine suggests that non genomic effects of 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) on NCX activity are mediated by activation of PKA and PKC pathways. In conclusion, 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) enhances the intestinal NCX activity in -D chicks through genomic and non genomic mechanisms., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

Background: Turner syndrome (TS) patients present low bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk, probably due to a genetic defect aggravated by hormonal deficiency., Aim: To study the relationship between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms and BMD and bone parameters in TS patients., Methods: DNA from 65 TS patients and 110 controls was amplified by PCR and digested with FokI, BsmI and ApaI restrictases. Lumbar and femoral BMD were determined by DEXA and serum intact parathyroid hormone, osteocalcin and beta-CrossLaps by electrochemiluminescence., Results: Genotype distribution within the ApaI site was different in both groups: genotype Aa was more abundant in TS (63.8% vs. 41.3%; p<0.01), whereas AA predominated in controls (33.9% vs. 15.5%; p<0.01). Patients carrying genotype bb (BsmI) or ff (FokI) had lower BMD than those with other genotypes (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively)., Conclusion: BsmI and FokI polymorphic sites of VDR could be genetic determinants of BMD in TS patients.

Calcium is essential for bone and tooth formation, achievement of optimal peak bone mass and also for regulation of physiological processes. The calcium demand depends on age, gender and different physiological processes. These requirements are higher during childhood, pregnancy and lactation. Dietary Ca2+ deficiency modifies Ca2+ homeostasis and the metabolism of calciotropic hormones and increases the efficiency of intestinal Ca2+ absorption and renal reabsorption, altering bone metabolism. The low Ca2+ diet is associated with hypertension and risk of cancer.

The aim of this study was to determine genotypes and clinical aspects associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women from Córdoba, Argentina. Polymorphisms were assessed by RFLP-PCR technique using BsmI and FokI for vitamin D receptor gene (VDR) and XbaI and PvuII for estrogen receptor-alpha gene (ERalpha) as restrictases. Sixty-eight healthy, 54 osteopenic, and 64 osteoporotic postmenopausal women were recruited. Femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD were inversely correlated with age in the entire analyzed population. Height was lower in osteopenic and osteoporotic women as compared to healthy women (P < 0.05). Weight and body mass index (BMI) were the lowest in osteoporotic women (P < 0.01 versus healthy group). Serum procollagen type I Nterminal propeptide (PINP) was higher in osteoporotic women as compared to the other groups. Distribution of VDR and ERalpha genotypes was similar in the three groups. Genotype bb (VDR) was associated with low values of lumbar BMD in the healthy group (P < 0.05 versus genotype Bb), and with low values of femoral BMD (P < 0.05 versus genotype BB) in osteoporotic women. BB*Pp interaction was associated with the highest femoral neck BMD (P < 0.05), whereas the bb*xx interaction was associated with the lowest femoral neck BMD in the total population analyzed (P < 0.05). In conclusion, parameters such as age, height, weight, BMI, serum PINP, VDR genotypes, and interactions between VDR and ERalpha genotypes could be useful to predict a decrease in BMD in Argentine postmenopausal women.

The biological role of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) has generally been related to calcium homeostasis, but this hormone also has fundamental effects on processes of cellular proliferation and differentiation. The genomic actions of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) are mediated by the vitamin D receptor (VDR) present in target cells. However, VDR transcriptional regulation is not well understood, probably attributable to the complexity of the VDR gene and its promoter. In the present study, it is demonstrated that administration of the pituitary transcription factor Pit-1 (originally found in the pituitary gland but also present in other nonpituitary cell types and tissues) to the MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) cell line induces a significant increase in VDR mRNA and protein levels. Conversely, Pit-1-targeted small interference RNA markedly reduced expression of VDR in MCF-7 cells. Reporter gene assays demonstrated that the effect of Pit-1 is mediated by its binding to a region located between -254 and -246 bp from the VDR transcription start site. Selective mutations of this site completely abolished VDR transcription. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis showed that binding of Pit-1 to the VDR promoter leads additionally to recruitment of cAMP response element-binding protein binding protein, acetylated histone H4, and RNA polymerase II. Surprisingly, Pit-1 binding also recruits VDR protein to the VDR promoter. Using several cell lines with different levels of VDR expression, it was demonstrated that up-regulation of VDR transcription by Pit-1 is dependent on the presence of VDR protein, suggesting that transcriptional expression of VDR in a given cell type is dependent on, among other factors, its own expression levels.
