Abstract

Whey proteins can exhibit antioxidant activity. The objectives of this study were to formulate model whey based beverages with well-established antioxidants (plant polyphenols, vitamins and astaxanthin) to investigate (1) the antioxidant shelf life over a 24-week period and (2) the antioxidant activity after upper gastrointestinal transit. Pilot scale processing (pasteurization, ultra-high temperature or spray drying) was used to prepare beverages which were representative of current product formats. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion of test samples was performed using the standardised INFOGEST method and antioxidant activity of samples was determined using ABTS, FRAP and ORAC. Results from the antioxidant shelf life study provided evidence that powder products functionality was preserved. Whey beverages (pasteurised or spray dried) increased or maintained antioxidant activity during gastrointestinal transit. Combination of whey with additional antioxidant ingredients increased the bioactivity of formulated products; however, this greater bioactivity was altered after gastrointestinal transit, depending on processing type and antioxidant methodology.

Abstract

The bhp gene present in bacteria which degrade polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) was introduced into a non-essential region of Pseudomonas chromosome. The growth of the pseudomonas strain was not affected and the bacterial cells could use biphenyls for their carbon requirements. Under laboratory conditions the PCB degrading ability was unaffected and cultures of the Pseudomonas did not contain any cells which had lost this ability. Pseudomonads are found in the roots of plants and the genetically altered strains can be used for bioremediation of contaminated soil.

Abstract

Reform of local government in Ireland has tended to involve both reform initiatives that mirror broader trends in public service reform nationally, as well as reform initiatives that are distinctive to the local government sector. Amongst the former we can include managerial reforms, digitisation and efforts to make local government more open and accountable. Other initiatives have included changes to the service portfolio of local government, pointing to an enhanced role in some fields and a reduced role in others. Some reforms can be characterised as enduring – in that they have been recurring themes in successive reform programmes. Other reform themes have been somewhat more occasional or sporadic and arguably brought about by the specific circumstances in which they were implemented. Looking to the future, we might speculate that upcoming challenges may include how public services generally can cope with diversity in addressing challenges that are likely to vary in different parts of Ireland, for example, based on distinctions between urban, suburban and rural areas. The article appeals for a more evidence-based approach to reform in the local government sector – this should be aided by existing research contributions and the enhanced evaluation capacity that exists in the Irish public service.

Abstract

Following nearly each U.S. conflict abroad, the U.S. military-media relationship has been dramatically altered. Each alteration was an attempt to "fix" what was perceived to have gone wrong with the U.S. military-media relationship in the previous conflict rather than to optimize it for a future conflict. The U.S. can no longer afford to experiment with the military-media relationship now that the character of warfare has changed as a result of the rapid and broad dissemination of information on and away from the battlefield. Embedded media are a critical capability for the U.S. military within this new character of warfare where our news-oriented culture has an expectation for immediate access to the latest information. Institutionalizing embedded media into the mainstream military, by consistently integrating them throughout the planning, training and execution of U.S. Military operations, will help to narrow the cultural gap between the U.S. Armed Forces and the American public and will also work with and not against significant advances in communication technologies. Abstract

Recently, we and others have described a novel class of chromosome aberrations that involves constitutive heterochromatin on human chromosome 1 (cytogenetic band 1q12). These anomalies are particularly frequent in B cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL) and multiple myeloma (MM) and, remarkably, almost invariably involve partial or total gain of chromosome 1q (including 1q12 heterochromatin) and the formation of novel heterochromatin/euchromatin junctions. This review discusses the pathological significance of these anomalies in light of i) recent integrated gene expression and array comparative genomic hybridisation (aCGH) profiling in MM and ii) increasing evidence of a key role for heterochromatin in the control of normal and pathological gene silencing. Abstract

Shoulder dislocation and subluxation occur frequently in athletes, with peaks in the second and sixth decades. The majority of traumatic dislocations are in the anterior direction. The most frequent complication of shoulder dislocation is recurrence--a complication that occurs much more often in the adolescent population. The dynamic (muscular) and static (predominantly capsuloligamentous and labral) restraints to shoulder instability are now well defined. Recent surgical procedures for shoulder instability have become less interventional and have focused on restoring disrupted static restraints.
