Background This article explores the Canadian artist Greg Curnoe's experiments with computer- based composition with an emphasis on the Computer Journals project (1969-1971). The Computer Journals project is situated in relation to the art scene in London, Ontario, the development of computer art during the late 1960s, and contemporary theories of technology and culture. Analysis It is argued that the project elaborates an innovative analysis of the relationship between technology and creativity that offers a critical understanding of power, agency, and expression. Conclusion and implications It is suggested that a return to Curnoe's computer-based work offers an alternative to dominant schools of media theory and the philosophy of technology in Canada during the second half of the twentieth century, as well as anticipating contemporary discussions of digital media and creativity. As home computers became a growing presence in middle- and upper-class American households in the 1980s, many journalists were given the task of helping consumers make sense and find practical uses for these systems in a home and family environment. Out of this new and somewhat beguiling content challenge for the media emerged a number of monthly magazines covering a variety of topics related to the new home computer marketplace. This article examines the content of such magazines through two research questions. The first looks at prevalent topics in computer magazine articles in presenting discursive frames about home computing to readers. The second considers how the content provided consumer insight to both actual and potential uses of home computers. Looking at articles published from 1984-1985 in three large-circulation general computer magazines, the study finds three discursive frameworks--advisory, instructive, and social/cultural--routinely present within both the topics and the content of the magazines. Betting strategies are often expressed formally as martingales. A martingale is called integer-valued if each bet must be an integer value. Integer-valued strategies correspond to the fact that in most betting situations, there is a minimum amount that a player can bet. According to a well known paradigm, algorithmic randomness can be founded on the notion of betting strategies. A real X is called integer-valued random if no effective integer-valued martingale succeeds on X . It turns out that this notion of randomness has interesting interactions with genericity and the computably enumerable degrees. This paper analyzes to which extent research published in Computer Standards & Interfaces (CSI) has a technical focus. We find that CSI has been following its scope very closely in the last three years and that the majority of its publications have a technical focus. Articles published in CSI constantly cite research from various technical disciplines, but there are also a limited number of references to non-technical literature. Mostly technical journals cite CSI papers, with a few exceptions of non-technical journals. Standard software testing might not catch important defects, and formal methods can be difficult to use. But, there's a middle ground between the two. This middle ground involves adding five steps to standard testing and employing test randomization, model-based testing, and a more aggressive use of assertions (also called self-tests). This article explains why Paddy Power decided to adopt CD, describes the resulting CD capability, and reports the huge benefits and challenges involved. These experiences can provide fellow practitioners with insights for their adoption of CD, and the identified challenges can provide researchers valuable input for developing their research agendas. We introduce the notion of entropy on arbitrary lattices and we study several of its properties. Explicit forms for entropy are obtained for entropies on graded lattices that satisfy certain regularity conditions. Abstract: Version 1.0 of the Guide to the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK) was released in September 2012. The SEBoK contained over 1000 articles and almost 700 books as references. 224 of the references were cited as primary references. This paper disaggregates the references by several dimensions. Interesting insights include the most cited references; topics where references are sparse, indicating immaturity of the field; the longitudinal distribution of references; organizations with the most authors cited; and the most active research topics. An introduction to this special issue of "Computer Supported Cooperative Work: The Journal of Collaborative Computing," focusing on collective intelligence in organizations, is presented.

The year 2012 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of BA framework for information systems architecture,[ written by John Zachman and published in the IBM Systems Journal. The first part of this paper reviews the Zachman and similar frameworks and concludes that there are a number of limitations in the framework approach when applied to today's technology environment and business problems. These include the inability of the problem owner to properly describe a solution, the partitioning approach, and the decision-making processes in the context of uncertainty and change. The second part of this paper analyzes today's problems and allocates them to one of three classifications: tame, complex, and wicked, depending on the degree of certainty and stability of knowledge and decisions in both the problem and the solution domains. The final part outlines an approach to problem-solving and architecture development using techniques borrowed from cybernetics and control theory. It proposes that partitioning should be determined by the nature of the problem and potential solutions; that feedback loops should be implemented in order to control the process; that the architect should work across the business problem and solution spaces; and that decisions should be related to business value. The article presents a letter of the editor that gives a short account of the history of the IEEE Transactions on Computers journal. It is stated that the journal has been operating for more than 50 years. The journals from the very first copy is numbered EC1 through EC16. The name is derived from the origin of the publication which is "Electronic Computer." The name of the publication is changed to its current name by deleting the redundant word "Electronic." A list of the members of the publication is also given in the article. Some of the accomplishments of the journal are listed as well.

E-business environments pose unique challenges to the measurement of information technology payoff. In this paper we discuss some of those challenges as stemming from issues such as the productivity paradox, level of measurement, choice of metrics and the process of measurement. Further, we discuss those characteristics that make investments in E-business environment different from other types of IT investment.
