1. Asymptotics of the $\phi^4_1$ measure in the sharp interface limit

Abstract

We consider the $\phi^4_1$ measure in an interval of length $\ell$, defined by a symmetric double-well potential $W$ and inverse temperature $\beta$. Our results concern its asymptotic behavior in the joint limit $\beta, \ell \to \infty$, both in the subcritical regime $\ell \ll \rme^{\beta C_W}$ and in the supercritical regime $\ell \gg \rme^{\beta C_W}$, where $C_W$ denotes the surface tension. In the former case, in which the measure concentrates on the pure phases, we prove the corresponding large deviation principle. The associated rate function is the Modica-Mortola functional modified to take into account the entropy of the locations of the interfaces. Further, we provide the sharp asymptotics of the probability of having a given number of transitions between the two pure phases. In the supercritical regime, the measure does not longer concentrate and we show that the interfaces are asymptotically distributed according to a Poisson point process., Comment: 38 pages

4. Improving asthma care with Asthma-COPD Afterhours Respiratory Nurse at Emergency (A-CARE)

Abstract

Background Emergency departments (ED) are important providers of asthma care, particularly after-hours. We identified gaps for quality improvement such as suboptimal adherence rates to three key recommendations from the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines for discharge management asthma guidelines. These were: the prescription of oral and inhaled corticosteroids (OCS and ICS) and issuance of outpatient follow-up for patients discharged from the ED.Aim To achieve an adherence rate of 80% to GINA guidelines for ED discharge management by providing after-hours asthma counselling services.Methods We implemented Asthma-COPD Afterhours Respiratory Nurse at Emergency (A-CARE) according to the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework to provide after-hours asthma counselling and clinical decision support to ED physicians three nights a week. Data on adherence rates to the GINA guidelines were collected and analysed on a run chart.Results After 17 months’ follow-up, a sustained improvement was observed in patients reviewed by A-CARE in the median adherence rates to OCS prescription (58% vs 86%), ICS initiation (27% vs 67%) and issuance of follow-up (69% vs 92%), respectively. The overall impact was, however, limited by a suboptimal referral rate to A-CARE (16%) in a clinical audit of all ED patients with asthma. Nonetheless, in this audit, attendance rates for patients referred to our respiratory department for follow-up were higher in those receiving asthma counselling compared with those who did not (41.7% vs 15.9%, p=0.0388).Conclusion Sustained improvements in the adherence rates to guidelines were achieved for patients reviewed by A-CARE but were limited in overall impact due to suboptimal referral rate. We plan to improve the quality of asthma care by implementing further PDSA cycles to increase the referral rates to A-CARE.

Abstract

We study the time evolution of an incompressible fluid with axial symmetry without swirl when the vorticity is sharply concentrated on $N$ annuli of radii of the order of $r_0$ and thickness $\varepsilon$. We prove that when $r_0= |\log \varepsilon|^\alpha$, $\alpha>1$, the vorticity field of the fluid converges for $\varepsilon \to 0$ to the point vortex model, in an interval of time which diverges as $\log|\log\varepsilon|$. This generalizes previous result by Cavallaro and Marchioro in [J. Math. Abstract

We consider an incompressible fluid with axial symmetry without swirl, assuming initial data such that the initial vorticity is very concentrated inside $N$ small disjoint rings of thickness $\varepsilon$, each one of vorticity mass and main radius of order $|\log\varepsilon|$. When $\varepsilon \to 0$, we show that, at least for small but positive times, the motion of the rings converges to a dynamical system firstly introduced in [NoDEA Nonlinear Diff. Eq. Appl. 6 (1999), 473-499]. In the special case of two vortex rings with large enough main radius, the result is improved reaching longer times, in such a way to cover the case of several overtakings between the rings, thus providing a mathematical rigorous derivation of the leapfrogging phenomenon., Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure; typos corrected, references updated

Abstract

BackgroundThe Internet is a crucial source of health information, providing access to vast volumes of high-quality, up-to-date, and relevant healthcare information. Its impact extends beyond information access, influencing medical practice through the widespread adoption of telemedicine and evidence-based medicine. Despite the significant global increase in internet usage, Africa lags in internet penetration, particularly in utilizing the internet for health information. This study aims to systematically review the literature to explore barriers to accessing health information on the Internet in African countries.MethodsThe study was conducted from January 1 to February 28, 2023. It followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline to systematically review published studies investigating the utilization of the Internet for health information in African countries. A comprehensive search was conducted across various databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Hinari, CINAHL, and Global Health. The inclusion criteria were applied, resulting in the selection of six studies that formed the basis for our analysis.ResultThis systematic review identifies eleven barriers to accessing health information on the internet. These include a lack of ownership of smart electronic devices, infrequent internet use, limited internet access, low E-health and computer literacy, slow internet connection, high cost of internet access, insufficient information search skills, residing in rural areas, dealing with diverse fields, and having low perceptions.ConclusionImproving our understanding of barriers to accessing health information online is essential for policymakers, governments, academics, and healthcare professionals. To enhance the use of the Internet for health information and strengthen the overall health system, policymakers should prioritize increasing Internet accessibility, reducing costs, improving connections, offering basic computer skills training, and ensuring the availability of electronic devices in all institutions.

Abstract

Background: The Internet has become a pivotal resource for accessing health information globally, offering unprecedented convenience and breadth of resources. This cross-sectional study examines the implications of Internet use for health information seeking and the influencing factors among undergraduate health science students in Southwest Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from November 10 to December 10, 2023. The study enrolled 423 students. Data were collected using a pretested and structured self-administered questionnaire. Data entry and analysis were performed using EpiData V4.6 and STATA V17, respectively. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with the outcome variable. Statistical significance was determined using a P-value of less than 0.05. Result: A total of 423 respondents participated in this study, resulting in a 100 % response rate. Among them, 67.4 % (95 % CI: 63.0%–72.0 %) reported using the Internet for health purposes. Factors significantly associated with this usage included being a third-year student or above (AOR = 2.33, 95 % CI: 1.36–3.99), owning a smartphone (AOR = 2.41, 95 % CI: 1.14–5.10), having good awareness (AOR = 2.81, 95 % CI: 1.55–5.09), holding a favorable attitude (AOR = 9.58, 95 % CI: 5.10–18.00), and possessing adequate e-health literacy (AOR = 5.25, 95 % CI: 2.89–9.46). Conclusion: This study underscores the internet's primary role in accessing information on diseases, treatments, healthy lifestyles, and prevention. Key factors such as e-health literacy, attitude, awareness, smartphone usage, and study timing significantly influence this trend. Understanding these factors is vital for optimizing internet resources for health information dissemination.

Abstract

Background: Child sexual abuse is a grave issue with significant consequences for the well-being and development of children worldwide. Understanding the scope of this problem is essential, particularly in Ethiopia, where protecting the nation's youth is crucial. Although child sexual abuse is a critical issue, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment of its prevalence and associated factors in Ethiopia. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting a meta-analysis and systematic review to explore the current prevalence and contributing factors of female child sexual abuse in Ethiopia. Methods: This study followed the PRISMA checklist, focusing on Ethiopian studies. Nine relevant studies were identified from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Medline, and the Cochrane Library for the final meta-analysis and systematic review. The analysis was performed with STATA version 11, utilizing a structured checklist for data extraction. To assess heterogeneity, the Cochrane Q test statistic and I2 tests were employed. To check for publication bias, Egger's weighted regression, Begg's test, and a funnel plot were utilized. Results: A total of 1230 research articles were initially identified for this systematic review and meta-analysis. After screening, nine studies met the eligibility criteria, with a combined sample size of 3930 children across all studies. The pooled prevalence of child sexual abuse among female students was 36.83 % [95 % CI: 24.35–49.32]. This meta-analysis identified several factors significantly associated with child sexual abuse: children living alone (OR = 4.45, 95 % CI: 2.65–7.46), living with friends (OR = 3.49, 95 % CI: 2.35–5.18), alcohol consumption (OR = 2.72, 95 % CI: 1.70–4.35), cigarette smoking (OR = 3.83, 95 % CI: 1.66–8.83), parental conflicts (OR = 2.50, 95 % CI: 1.43–4.36), lack of open discussion about reproductive health (OR = 3.44, 95 % CI: 1.84–6.42), and family control practices (OR = 1.92, 95 % CI: 1.16–3.17). Conclusion: The pooled prevalence of child sexual abuse among female students (36.83 %) highlights a critical need for focused preventive efforts. Key risk factors identified include living alone or with friends, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, parental conflicts, limited reproductive health discussions, and controlling family practices. Addressing these through community education, family support, and open communication on reproductive health could help reduce abuse risk among vulnerable groups.

Abstract

In [Phys. Rev. 94 (1954), 511-525], P.L. Bhatnagar, E.P. Gross and M. Krook introduced a kinetic equation (the BGK equation), effective in physical situations where the Knudsen number is small compared to the scales where Boltzmann's equation can be applied, but not enough for using hydrodynamic equations. In this paper, we consider the stochastic particle system (inhomogeneous Kac model) underlying Bird's direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC), with tuning of the scaled variables yielding kinetic and/or hydrodynamic descriptions. Although the BGK equation cannot be obtained from pure scaling, it does follow from a simple modification of the dynamics. Abstract

With the growth of social media platform influence, the effect of their misuse becomes more and more impactful. The importance of automatic detection of threatening and abusive language can not be overestimated. However, most of the existing studies and state-of-the-art methods focus on English as the target language, with limited work on low- and medium-resource languages. In this paper, we present two shared tasks of abusive and threatening language detection for the Urdu language which has more than 170 million speakers worldwide. Both are posed as binary classification tasks where participating systems are required to classify tweets in Urdu into two classes, namely: (i) Abusive and Non-Abusive for the first task, and (ii) Threatening and Non-Threatening for the second. We present two manually annotated datasets containing tweets labelled as (i) Abusive and Non-Abusive, and (ii) Threatening and Non-Threatening. The abusive dataset contains 2400 annotated tweets in the train part and 1100 annotated tweets in the test part. The threatening dataset contains 6000 annotated tweets in the train part and 3950 annotated tweets in the test part. We also provide logistic regression and BERT-based baseline classifiers for both tasks. In this shared task, 21 teams from six countries registered for participation (India, Pakistan, China, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, and Taiwan), 10 teams submitted their runs for Subtask A, which is Abusive Language Detection and 9 teams submitted their runs for Subtask B, which is Threatening Language detection, and seven teams submitted their technical reports. The best performing system achieved an F1-score value of 0.880 for Subtask A and 0.545 for Subtask B. For both subtasks, m-Bert based transformer model showed the best performance.

Abstract

We consider interacting particle dynamics with Vicsek type interactions, and their macroscopic PDE limit, in the non-mean-field regime; that is, we consider the case in which each particle/agent in the system interacts only with a prescribed subset of the particles in the system (for example, those within a certain distance). In this non-mean-field regime the influence between agents (i.e. the interaction term) can be normalised either by the total number of agents in the system (\textit{global scaling}) or by the number of agents with which the particle is effectively interacting (\textit{local scaling}). We compare the behaviour of the globally scaled and the locally scaled systems in many respects, considering for each scaling both the PDE and the corresponding particle model. In particular we observe that both the locally and globally scaled particle system exhibit pattern formation (i.e. formation of travelling-wave-like solutions) within certain parameter regimes, and generally display similar dynamics. The same is not true of the corresponding PDE models. Indeed, while both PDE models have multiple stationary states, for the globally scaled PDE such (space-homogeneous) equilibria are unstable for certain parameter regimes, with the instability leading to travelling wave solutions, while they are always stable for the locally scaled one, which never produces travelling waves. Abstract

We consider a stochastic $N$-particle system on a torus in which each particle moving freely can instantaneously thermalize according to the particle configuration at that instant. Following [2], we show that the propagation of chaos does hold and that the one-particle distribution converges to the solution of the BGK equation. The improvement with respect to [2] consists in the fact that here, as suggested by physical considerations, the thermalizing transition is driven only by the restriction of the particle configuration in a small neighborhood of the jumping particle. In other words, the Maxwellian distribution of the outgoing particle is computed via the empirical hydrodynamical fields associated to the fraction of particles sufficiently close to the test particle and not, as in [2], via the whole particle configuration. Abstract

We study the time evolution of an incompressible fluid with axial symmetry without swirl, assuming initial data such that the initial vorticity is very concentrated inside $N$ small disjoint rings of thickness $\varepsilon$ and vorticity mass of the order of $|\log\varepsilon|^{ -1}$. When $\varepsilon \to 0$ we show that the motion of each vortex ring converges to a simple translation with constant speed (depending on the single ring) along the symmetry axis. We obtain a sharp localization of the vorticity support at time $t$ in the radial direction, whereas we state only a concentration property in the axial direction. This is obtained for arbitrary (but fixed) intervals of time. This study is the completion of a previous paper arXiv:1904.04785 [math-ph], where a sharp localization of the vorticity support was obtained both along the radial and axial directions, but the convergence for $\varepsilon\to 0$ worked only for short times., Comment: 23 pages, LaTex; small changes in abstract and introduction, typos corrected, added an appendix with the proof of Lemma 4.1, and, with respect to version 2, Lemma 3.2 corrected (which implies very slight changes in other parts of the manuscript).
