Abstract

Atomic and magnetization density measurements of a nickel twist grain boundary when varied with distance from the interface plane imply that the reduced atomic density of the grain boundary contributes to the improvement of the magnet moment at the grain boundary. A symmetry change at the grain boundary also changes the density of states, enhancing the magnetic moments of nickel atoms in the grain boundary. Reduction in atomic density enhances the magnetization density of the nickel boundary.

Abstract

The short-time (12 h) ball milling of the amorphous Co56Fe16Zr8B20 (at. %) alloy resulted in the formation of bcc-Fe nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix. X-ray diffraction (XRD) using synchrotron radiation, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), vibrating sample magnetometery (VSM), and the Faraday magnetic balance experiments were used to characterize the materials. XRD and DSC show that the fraction of crystallized bcc-Fe gradually increases with the milling time. The VSM measurements confirm the structure observations showing that the saturation magnetization increases with the milling time as the fraction of crystallized bcc-Fe increases. After 12 h of milling, the powder sample exhibited a Curie temperature of the amorphous phase TCam, which is approximately 55 K higher compared to the as-quenched ribbon (TCam=601 K). Thermomagnetic measurements of heat-treated ribbons suggest that such an increase in TCam is not only due to temperature rises during the milling but may also be attributed to the combination of mechanical and thermal effects connected with the nature of milling. 47. Alternative Solutions for Data Storage Using Magnetic Films Exchange-Coupled Through Non-Magnetic Layer

Abstract

We describe an alternative solution to encode information in magnetic films that goes beyond the conventional way of digital magnetic recording. In our approach the information is stored via a continuous variable, namely the remanent coupling angle between two magnetic films that are separated by a nonmagnetic spacer layer. Using the technique of nuclear resonant scattering (NRS) [1, 2] we show with good precision, how this coupling angle can be conveniently adjusted with high degree of remanence by shortly applied external magnetic fields. Moreover this effect is explained using a micromagnetic model [3, 4]. Extremely important for future applications of this concept, we demonstrate, that the remanent coupling angles can be read out via magneto-optical or magneto-resistance effects. In principle, this approach allows to design novel memory cells for advance data storage devices, where multiple states per unit cell can be generated and recorded.

Abstract

The mechanically induced crystallization of the CoFeZrB metallic glass by short-time ball mining (BM) technique is presented. The thermomagnetic measurements of heat-treated ribbons have indicated that the increase in Curie temperature of the amorphous phase is not only due to temperature rises during the milling but also due to the combination of mechanical and thermal effects connected with the nature of milling.
