Search

As mass-losing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars evolve to planetary nebulae (PNe), the mass outflow geometries transform from nearly spherical to extreme aspherical. The physical mechanisms governing this transformation are widely believed to be linked to binarity and the associated production of disks and fast jets during transitional (post-AGB) evolutionary stages. We are carrying out a systematic ALMA survey ($P$re-planet$A$ry $N$ebulae high-angular-res$O$lution su$R$vey with $A$L$MA$ or PANORAMA) of a representative sample of bipolar and multipolar post-AGB objects. We have obtained high angular-resolution (0".1-0".4) observations of the CO(3--2) and/or 6--5 emission in order to probe the spatio-kinematic structure of the collimated outflows and the central disk/torii. The results are remarkable, generally showing the presence of bipolar or multipolar high-velocity outflows, dense toroidal waists, and in one case, a geometrically-thin circular ring around the central bipolar nebula. A high degree of point-symmetry characterizes the morphology of the mass ejecta. In this contribution, we present these and other highlights from our survey. We aim to use 2D/3D radiative transfer modeling in order to derive accurate outflow momenta, masses and mass-loss rates for our sample, and build hydrodynamical models that can explain the observed spatio-kinematic structures. These results will then be used to distinguish between different classes of PN-shaping binary interaction models.

Planetary nebulae (PNe), the ejected envelopes of red giant stars, provide us with a history of the last, mass-losing phases of 90 percent of stars initially more massive than the Sun. Here, we analyse James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observation (ERO) images of the PN NGC3132. A structured, extended H2 halo surrounding an ionised central bubble is imprinted with spiral structures, likely shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at 40-60 AU. The images also reveal a mid-IR excess at the central star interpreted as a dusty disk, indicative of an interaction with another, closer companion. Including the previously known, A-type visual companion, the progenitor of the NGC3132 PN must have been at least a stellar quartet. The JWST images allow us to generate a model of the illumination, ionisation and hydrodynamics of the molecular halo, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate complex stellar outflows. Further, new measurements of the A-type visual companion allow us to derive the value for the mass of the progenitor of a central star to date with excellent precision: 2.86+/-0.06 Mo. The planetary nebula (PN) NGC3132 is a striking example of the dramatic but poorly understood, mass-loss phenomena that (1-8) Msun stars undergo during their death throes as they evolve into white dwarfs (WDs). From an analysis of JWST multiwavelength (0.9-18 micron) imaging of NGC3132, we report the discovery of an asymmetrical dust cloud around the WD central star (CS) of NGC3132, seen most prominently in the 18 micron~image, with a surface-brightness limited radial extent of >~2 arcsec. We show that the A2V star located 1.7 arcsec to CS's North-East (and 0.75 kpc from Earth) is gravitationally-bound to the latter, by the detection of relative orbital angular motion of (0.24+/-0.045) deg between these stars over ~20 yr. Using aperture photometry of the CS extracted from the JWST images, together with published optical photometry and an archival UV spectrum, we have constructed the spectral-energy distribution (SED) of the CS and its extended emission over the UV to mid-IR (0.091-18 micron) range. We find that fitting the SED of the CS and the radial intensity distributions at 7.7, 12.8 and 18 micron with thermal emission from dust requires a cloud that extends to a radius of >~1785 au, with a dust mass of ~1.3 x 10^(-2) M(Earth) and grains that are 70% silicate and 30% amorphous carbon. We propose plausible origins of the dust cloud and an evolutionary scenario in which a system of three stars -- the CS, a close low-mass companion, and a more distant A2V star -- forms a stable hierarchical triple system on the main-sequence but becomes dynamically unstable later, resulting in the spectacular mass-ejections that form the current, multipolar PN., Comment: 23 pages, 5 tables, 8 figures (ApJ, in press) references added, minor revision of Fig 5 caption, minor typos corrected

The young and well-studied planetary nebula NGC 7027 harbors significant molecular gas that is irradiated by luminous, point-like UV (central star) and diffuse (shocked nebular) X-ray emission. This nebula represents an excellent subject to investigate the molecular chemistry and physical conditions within photon- and X-ray-dominated regions (PDRs and XDRs). As yet, the exact formation routes of CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ in PN environments remain uncertain. Here, we present $\sim$2$"$ resolution maps of NGC 7027 in the irradiation tracers CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$, obtained with the IRAM NOEMA interferometer, along with SMA CO and HST 2.12~$\mu$m H$_2$ data for context. The CO$^+$ map constitutes the first interferometric map of this molecular ion in any PN. Comparison of CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ maps reveal strikingly different emission morphologies, as well as a systematic spatial displacement between the two molecules; the regions of brightest HCO$^+$, found along the central waist of the nebula, are radially offset by $\sim$1$"$ ($\sim$900 au) outside the corresponding CO$^+$ emission peaks. The CO$^+$ emission furthermore precisely traces the inner boundaries of the nebula's PDR (as delineated by near-IR H$_2$ emission), suggesting that central star UV emission drives CO$^+$ formation. The displacement of HCO$^+$ radially outward with respect to CO$^+$ is indicative that dust-penetrating soft X-rays are responsible for enhancing the HCO$^+$ abundance in the surrounding molecular envelope, forming an XDR. These interferometric CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ observations of NGC 7027 thus clearly establish the spatial distinction between the PDR and XDR formed (respectively) by intense UV and X-ray irradiation of molecular gas., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries are surrounded by massive disks of gas and dust that are similar to protoplanetary disks around young stars. We assembled a catalog of all known Galactic post-AGB binaries with disks. We explore the correlations between the different observables with the aim of learning more about potential disk-binary interactions. We compiled spectral energy distributions of 85 Galactic post-AGB binary systems. We built a color-color diagram to differentiate between the different disk morphologies traced by the infrared excess. We categorized the different disk types and searched for correlations with other observational characteristics of these systems. Between 8 and 12% of our targets are surrounded by transition disks, that is, disks having no or low near-infrared excess. We find a strong link between these transition disks and the depletion of refractory elements on the surface of the post-AGB star. We interpret this link as evidence of a mechanism that stimulates the dust and gas separation within the disk and that also produces the transition disk structure. We propose that such a mechanism is likely to be due to a giant planet carving a hole in the disk, effectively trapping the dust in the outer disk parts. We propose disk evolutionary scenarios, depending on the presence of such a giant planet in the disk. We advocate that giant planets can successfully explain the link between the transition disks and the observed depletion of refractory materials. If the planetary scenario is confirmed, disks around post-AGB binaries could be a unique laboratory for testing planet-disk interactions and their influence on the late evolution of binary stars. The question of whether such planets are first- or second-generation bodies remains to be considered. Observations of molecular clouds, prestellar cores, and protoplanetary disks have established that the HNC/HCN ratio may be a potent diagnostic of molecular gas physical conditions. The processes that govern the relative abundances of these molecules nevertheless remain poorly understood. We seek to exploit the wide range of UV irradiation strengths within the 1 pc diameter Helix planetary nebula to explore the potential role of UV radiation in driving HNC/HCN. We performed IRAM 30 m and APEX 12 m radio line observations across six positions within the Helix Nebula, making use of radiative transfer and photodissociation modeling codes to interpret the results for line intensities and line ratios in terms of the molecular gas properties. We have obtained the first detections of the plasma-embedded Helix molecular knots (globules) in HCN, HNC, HCO+, and other trace molecules. Analysis of the HNC/HCN integrated line intensity ratio reveals an increase with radial distance from the Helix central star. In the context of molecular line ratios of other planetary nebulae from the literature, the HNC/HCN ratio appears to be anticorrelated with UV emission over four orders of magnitude in incident flux. Models of the photodissociation regions within the Helix using the RADEX and Meudon codes reveal strong constraints on column density of the molecular gas, as well as pressure and temperature. Analysis of the molecular ion HCO+ across the Helix indicates that X-ray irradiation is likely driving HCO+ production in the outer regions of planetary nebulae, where photodissociation is limited, yet cold gas and ionized molecules are abundant. Although the observational results clearly indicate that UV irradiation is important in determining the HNC/HCN ratio, our PDR modeling indicates that the UV flux gradient alone cannot reproduce the observed variation of HNC/HCN across the Helix., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

Fast outflows and their interaction with slow shells (generally known as the fossil circumstellar envelope of asymptotic giant branch stars) play an important role in the structure and kinematics of protoplanetary and planetary nebulae (pPNe, PNe). To properly study their effects within these objects, we also need to observe the intermediate-temperature gas, which is only detectable in the far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre (submm) transitions. We study the physical conditions of the outflows presented in a number of pPNe and PNe, with a focus on their temperature and excitation states. We carried out Herschel/HIFI observations in the submm lines of 12CO in nine pPNe and nine PNe and complemented them with low-J CO spectra obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope and taken from the literature. The spectral resolution of HIFI allows us to identify and measure the different nebular components in the line profiles. The comparison with large velocity gradient (LVG) model predictions was used to estimate the physical conditions of the warm gas in the nebulae, such as excitation conditions, temperature, and density. We found high kinetic temperatures for the fast winds of pPNe, typically reaching between 75 K and 200 K. In contrast, the high-velocity gas in the sampled PNe is colder, with characteristic temperatures between 25 K and 75 K, and it is found in a lower excitation state. We interpret this correlation of the kinetic temperature and excitation state of fast outflows with the amount of time elapsed since their acceleration (probably driven by shocks) as a consequence of the cooling that occurred during the pPN phase.

The new generation of VLTI instruments (GRAVITY, MATISSE) aims to produce routinely interferometric images to uncover the morphological complexity of different objects at high angular resolution. Image reconstruction is, however, not a fully automated process. Here we focus on a specific science case, namely the complex circumbinary environments of a subset of evolved binaries, for which interferometric imaging provides the spatial resolution required to resolve the immediate circumbinary environment. Indeed, many binaries where the main star is in the post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) phase are surrounded by circumbinary disks. Those disks were first inferred from the infrared excess produced by dust. Snapshot interferometric observations in the infrared confirmed disk-like morphology and revealed high spatial complexity of the emission that the use of geometrical models could not recover without being strongly biased. Arguably, the most convincing proof of the disk-like shape of the circumbinary environment came from the first interferometric image of such a system (IRAS08544-4431) using the PIONIER instrument at the VLTI. This image was obtained using the SPARCO image reconstruction approach that enables to subtract a model of a component of the image and reconstruct an image of its environment only. In the case of IRAS08544-4431, the model involved a binary and the image of the remaining signal revealed several unexpected features. Then, a second image revealed a different but also complex circumstellar morphology around HD101584 that was well studied by ALMA. Context. Stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) are long-period variables that present strong flux variations at almost all wavelengths, including the SiO maser lines. The periods of these variations are of 300-500 days in Mira-type stars and somewhat shorter in semi-regular variables. The variability of the SiO lines on short timescales has been investigated, but the data are inconclusive. Aims. We aim to study the time evolution of the SiO maser lines in Mira-type and semi-regular variables at short timescales. We also discuss the origin of the observed fast variations. Methods. We observed the SiO maser lines at 7 mm (28SiO v=1,2 J=1-0) and 3 mm (28SiO v=1 J=2-1) using the 40 m Yebes antenna and the 30 m IRAM telescope, respectively, with a minimum spacing of 1 day. We studied the semi-regular variables RX Boo and RT Vir and the Mira-type variables U Her, R LMi, R Leo, and $\chi$ Cyg. We performed a detailed statistical analysis of the variations on different timescales. Results. RX Boo shows strong and fast variations in the intensity of the different spectral features of the SiO lines at 7 mm and 3 mm. On a timescale of one day, we find variations of >10% in 25% of the cases. Variations of greater than $\sim$50% are often found when the observations are separated by 2 or 3 days. A similar variation rate of the SiO lines at 7 mm is found for RT Vir, but the observations of this object are less complete. On the contrary, the variations of the SiO maser line intensity in the Mira-type variables are moderate, with typical variation rates around <10% in 7 days. This phenomenon can be explained by the presence of particularly small maser-emitting clumps in semi-regular variables, which would lead to a strong dependence of the intensity on the density variations due to the passage of shocks.

Certain planetary nebulae contain shells, filaments, or globules of cold gas and dust whose heating and chemistry are likely driven by UV and X-ray emission from their central stars and from wind-collision-generated shocks. We present the results of a survey of molecular line emission in the 88-236 GHz range from nine nearby (<1.5 kpc) planetary nebulae spanning a range of UV and X-ray luminosities, using the 30 m telescope of the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique. Rotational transitions of thirteen molecules, including CO isotopologues and chemically important trace species, were observed and the results compared with and augmented by previous studies of molecular gas in PNe. Lines of the molecules HCO+, HNC, HCN, and CN, which were detected in most objects, represent new detections for five planetary nebulae in our study. Specifically, we present the first detections of 13CO (1-0, 2-1), HCO+, CN, HCN, and HNC in NGC 6445; HCO+ in BD+303639; 13CO (2-1), CN, HCN, and HNC in NGC 6853; and 13CO (2-1) and CN in NGC 6772. Flux ratios were analyzed to identify correlations between the central star and/or nebular UV and X-ray luminosities and the molecular chemistries of the nebulae. This analysis reveals a surprisingly robust dependence of the HNC/HCN line ratio on PN central star UV luminosity. There exists no such clear correlation between PN X-rays and various diagnostics of PN molecular chemistry. The correlation between HNC/HCN ratio and central star UV luminosity demonstrates the potential of molecular emission line studies of PNe for improving our understanding of the role that high-energy radiation plays in the heating and chemistry of photodissociation regions., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Most planetary nebulae (PNe) show beautiful, axisymmetric morphologies despite their progenitor stars being essentially spherical. Angular momentum provided by a close binary companion is widely invoked as the main agent that would help eject an axisymmetric nebula, after a brief phase of engulfment of the secondary within the envelope of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star, known as a common envelope (CE). The evolution of the AGB would be thus interrupted abruptly, its (still quite) massive envelope fully ejected to form the PN, which should be more massive than a PN coming from the same star were it single. We test this hypothesis by deriving the ionised+molecular masses of a pilot sample of post-CE PNe and comparing them to a regular PNe sample. We report on the astrometric registration of VLBI images of the SiO and water masers in OH231.8+4.2, the iconic Proto-Planetary Nebula also known as the Calabash nebula, using the KVN and Source/Frequency Phase Referencing. This, for the first time, robustly confirms the alignment of the SiO masers, close to the AGB star, driving the bi-lobe structure with the water masers in the out-flow. We are able to trace the bulk motions for the water masers over the last few decades to be 19 km/s and deduce that the age of this expansion stage is 38$\pm$2 years. The combination of this result with the distance allows a full 3D reconstruction, and confirms that the water masers lie on and expand along the known large-scale symmetry axis and that the outflow is only a few decades old, so mass loss is almost certainly on-going. Therefore we conclude that the SiO emission marks the stellar core of the nebular, the water emission traces the expansion, and that there must be multiple epochs of ejection to drive the macro-scale structure., Comment: Figure 6 is 3D

This review arose from the European Radio Astronomy Technical Forum (ERATec) meeting held in Firenze, October 2015, and aims to highlight the breadth and depth of the high-impact science that will be aided and assisted by the use of simultaneous mm-wavelength receivers. Recent results and opportunities are presented and discussed from the fields of: continuum VLBI (observations of weak sources, astrometry, observations of AGN cores in spectral index and Faraday rotation), spectral line VLBI (observations of evolved stars and massive star-forming regions) and time domain observations of the flux variations arising in the compact jets of X-ray binaries. Our survey brings together a large range of important science applications, which will greatly benefit from simultaneous observing at mm-wavelengths. Such facilities are essential to allow these applications to become more efficient, more sensitive and more scientifically robust. In some cases without simultaneous receivers the science goals are simply unachievable. We have searched for 22 GHz H2O and 43/86/129 GHz SiO masers in bright IRAS point sources in the SMC and LMC, to test whether the kinematics of the mass loss from these stars depends on metallicity. H2O masers were detected in the red supergiants IRAS04553-6825 and IRAS05280-6910, and tentatively in the luminous IR object IRAS05216-6753 and the AGB star IRAS05329-6708. SiO masers were detected in IRAS04553-6825. The outflow velocity increases between the H2O masing zone near the dust-formation region and the more distant OH masing zone from 18 to 26 km/s for IRAS04553-6825 and from 6 to 17 km/s for IRAS05280-6910. The total sample of LMC targets is analysed in comparison with circumstellar masers in the Galactic Centre. The photon fluxes of circumstellar masers in the LMC are very similar to those in the Galactic Centre. The expansion velocities in the LMC appear to be 20% lower than for similarly bright OH masers in the Galactic Centre, but the data are consistent with no difference in expansion velocity. OH/IR stars in the LMC appear to have slower accelerating envelopes than OH/IR stars in the Galactic Centre. Masers in the LMC have blue-asymmetric emission profiles. This may be due to the amplification of stellar and/or free-free radiation, rather than the amplification of dust emission, and may be more pronounced in low metallicity envelopes. SiO maser strength increases with the photometric amplitude at 2.2 micron but is independent of the photometric amplitude at 10 micron. This suggests a strong connection between shocks in the dust-free SiO masing zone and the dust formation process. We report the detection of 22 GHz H2O maser emission from the red supergiant IRAS04553-6825 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is the first known source of circumstellar H2O maser emission outside the Milky Way. The measured flux density is comparable to that expected from scaling the galactic red supergiant NML Cyg. The peak velocity agrees with the SiO maser peak velocity. A near-infrared spectrum indicates that IRAS04553-6825 has a typical LMC metallicity. We argue that, possibly as a result of the low metallicity, the H2O emission probably occurs near or within the dust formation radius, rather than further out as appears to be the case in NML Cyg and galactic OH/IR stars., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics Main Journal

We report on the detection of SiO J=2--1 v=1 (86 GHz) maser emission from the red supergiant IRAS04553--6825 in the LMC. It has thereby become the first known source of SiO maser emission outside the Milky Way. We used the Swedish-ESO Submm Telescope at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla. With the help of good atmospheric conditions, the excellent performance of the brand new 3~mm SIS receiver, and 26 hours total observing time we reduced the noise level to only 63~mJy rms. This allowed us to detect the 0.28~Jy maser peak. Integrating the flux of the maser profile resulted in a 6.9~${\sigma}$ detection. The SiO maser peak was situated 16~km~s$^{-1}$ redward of the center of the already known, double peaked OH maser emission. We argue that the SiO maser peak velocity coincides with the stellar velocity, which is supported by a spectrum of H$\alpha$ that we took four months later. This would mean that the outflow velocity of the circumstellar matter around IRAS04553--6825 is v$_{\rm exp} \sim 26$~km~s$^{-1}$, which is typical for galactic red supergiants, instead of the abnormally low 11~km~s$^{-1}$ inferred from the OH data alone. The peak intensity of the SiO maser emission is not incompatible with ranges found in galactic RSGs, but the total integrated photon flux is lower than expected for this extremely red and luminous supergiant., Comment: 4 pages, accepted by Astron.
