8. Experimental investigation of the mechanical behaviour of soft carbonate rock/grout interfaces for the design of offshore wind turbines

Abstract

Since a few years, in France, the development and construction of offshore wind farms in different sites of the country is investigated. The wind turbines will be installed in soft carbonate rock formations (calcarenite, limestone), the mechanical properties of which can vary in a significant way according to the location of the site. Once installed, the bored piles will be sealed with grout in the hosting rock. It is well known that the mechanical behaviour of piles is mainly governed by the behaviour of the interface at the contact between the structure and the hosting rock. The study of the mechanical behaviour of these interfaces, being the weakest points in terms of mechanical resistance, is of great importance for the improvement of the design methods of such infrastructures. The shear response of the rock/grout interface is studied with laboratory experiments in the 3SR lab (Grenoble). The interface's mechanical properties are characterised by a series of shear tests under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS), these conditions being the most representative of the in-situ conditions. Interface samples of a roughness representative of the in-situ drilling traces, are tested under different levels of applied normal stiffness. The shear response is studied for both monotonic and cyclic shear paths, while all tests are performed under wet conditions. The failure mechanisms are explored, taking into account the contrasting mechanical properties of the two materials composing the interface, as well as, the evolution of the geometrical profile of the interface. The correlation between roughness and the mechanical response of the interface is investigated and the importance of an existing roughness is discussed.

Abstract

This study is a part of a wide multi-scale research based on in situ experiments and laboratory tests. The latest, radial water injections in the centre of the lower joint wall are done at constant normal stress ranging from 0 to 110 MPa and at pressures from 0 to 4 MPa. Four hydromechanical tests have been performed in the L3S laboratory on fractured limestone samples (two diaclase and two bedding plane). The measurement analysis shows a relation between the contact surface variations and the flow values inside the fracture. The hydromechanical modelling performed using 3DEC code can be improved compared with the previous analysis due to the modification of the relation between the joint hydraulic opening and the joint mechanical closure. The gap between simulations and measurements can be related to fracture asperity degradation and turbulent flow that have not been taken into account in the modelling., Cette étude s'inscrit dans une recherche multi échelles basée sur des expérimentations in situ et des essais de laboratoire. Les essais, injections radiales d'eau au centre de l'éponte inférieure, sont fait à contrainte normale constante de 0 à 110 MPa et pour des pressions de 0 à 4 MPa. Quatre essais hydromécaniques ont été réalisés au laboratoire L3S sur des échantillons de calcaire fracturé (deux diaclases et deux joints de stratification). L'analyse des mesures montre une corrélation entre les variations de la surface de contact et le débit hydraulique dans la fracture. La modélisation hydromécanique réalisée à l'aide du code 3DEC peut être améliorée à partir de l'analyse précédente à travers la modification de la relation entre l'ouverture hydraulique et la fermeture mécanique du joint. L'écart entre les valeurs mesurées et calculées est lié en particulier à la dégradation des aspérités de la fracture sous forte contrainte et à la turbulence des écoulements non prises en compte dans la modélisation.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present one of the most important phases of a series of cyclic direct shear tests on granular soil and rough material interface under constant normal stiffness (CNS) condition. These cyclic interface tests were performed in order to simulate the situation along the pile shaft subjected to a large number of cycles due to environmental or anthropic loadings. This post-cyclic phase can be performed by one single large cycle after the cyclic phase in order to characterize the change of interface resistance. The principal characteristic of interface subjected to cyclic loading is the progressive contraction. This phenomenon leads to the degradation in normal stress acting on the pile shaft and consequently the shear resistance decreases. The influence of relative density of granular soil, initial normal stress, level of stress ratio, cyclic amplitude and imposed normal stiffness on the post-cyclic responses is discussed. Abstract

This paper deals with a laboratory and in situ study on the improvement of lateral friction along inclusions embedded in fine grained soils. Several soil-inclusion interfaces are considered and characterised by direct shear at constant normal stress and at constant normal stiffness, between silt and concrete/silica sand/silica sand + geotextile/silica sand + metallic grid. The performances of metric inclusions arc measured by pull-out tests, compared and simply modelled. Taking advantage of the dilatancy of sand, properly managed, is highlighted. Abstract

ABSTRACTTo understand the role of the contact conditions in the friction of ice on structure, we have performed cyclic friction tests at—10° C between laboratory grown columnar ice and a micro-concrete. This paper defines the performed tests. The obtained results allow the study of the mechanical behaviour of the interface and of the wear of concrete. Effects of time and contact conditions on friction are analysed, which leads to the formulation of empirical friction laws and to the definition of the physical mechanisms involved at the interface. The role of these mechanisms is tested in a simple model of the ice-concrete contact.

Abstract

ABSTRACTVery limited displacements of the existing buildings are adressed during the construction of tunnels at shallow depth using a tunnelling machine in urban alluvium environment. The authors first present the section of the tunnel (Lyon Vaise subway) investigated and analyse the loading history corresponding to the staged construction. Then they propose a 2D finite element modelisation of the processes of excavation and supporting, inspired by the principles of the inverse calculation, for the first tube, and for both tubes. Finally they evaluate the suitability of their approach by comparison to the results of the classical method of calculation (deconfining) and to the results of auscultation of this section of the tunnel.

Abstract

ABSTRACTMany civil engineering problems, such as retaining walls, soil nailed structures or piles involve interaction between soil and structural elements. Behaviour of interfaces between soils and structures plays a keys role in the design and analysis of these structures. The ring simple shear apparatus is especially designed for studying and measuring interface behaviour between soil (there, dry sand) and steel element. The results presented herein are obtained by friction between a steel cylinder, smooth or rough, and samples of Hostun graved. The main factors which affect the friction and its mobilisation are overburden pressure, the roughness of the surface and the relative density of the soil. An observation at the bottom of the sample allows the determination of the displacement and the rotation of the grains inside the interface layer.

The materials expected in situ are quite well know but there is a lack of data concerning the contacts between pre-compacted bentonite blocks within the engineered barrier or between the engineered and the natural barriers. However, such interfaces are critical regarding to the underground water flow and pollutant transport. The thesis deals with experimental and numerical investigations on the hydromechanical behaviour of Argilite/Bentonite and Argilite/Mortar interfaces. Compression and shear hydromechanical tests have been performed using the direct shear box for rock joints, BCR3D, developped at the Laboratory 3S to highlight the important parameters with regards to the evolution of the intrinsic transmissivity. Moreover, the shear tests show the influence of the rock wall roughness and of the initial value of normal stress on the mechanical response of the interface. Some experimental aspects, one of which is the bentonite erosion, have been studied from a numerical point of view to improve our understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour., Face au problème du devenir des déchets nucléaires, les nations concernées ont envisagé plusieurs stratégies, et ont notamment entrepris l'étude de faisabilité de sites de stockage en grande profondeur ainsi qu'une étude générale sur l'ensemble du problème, tant du point de vue des barrières (géologiques ou ouvragées) que du point de vue des colis radioactifs. Ainsi, les matériaux constitutifs des barrières sont connus dans leurs grandes lignes mais les contacts entre géomatériaux sont susceptibles d'être des zones critiques en terme d'écoulement de fluides. Ce travail de thèse, réalisé au laboratoire 3S, porte sur la caractérisation du comportement hydromécanique de diverses interfaces entre géomatériaux. Les contacts Argilite Mortier et Argilite Bentonite ont été étudiés en compression et/ou en cisaillement hydromécanique, grâce au dispositif de cisaillement BCR3D, afin de dégager les caractéristiques de leur comportement et d'identifier les paramètres ayant une influence sur leur transmissivité. De plus, les essais de cisaillement mettent en évidence le rôle majeur de la rugosité de l'éponte rocheuse et du niveau initial de contrainte normale sur la réponse hydromécanique des interfaces testées.
