Biological approaches with the core of manganese-oxidizing bacteria (MnOB) are cheap and environmentally friendly solutions for the removal of bivalent manganese (Mn(II)). These bacteria typically worked well in the pH range of 5.5 – 8.0 but poorly under pH below 5.5. In this study, we isolated an acid-tolerant manganese-oxidizing bacterium (Achromobacter sp. strain QBM-4) from acid mine drainage (AMD), which was effective for Mn(II) removal at pH 4.0. Under optimized treatment conditions (i.e., 60.0 mg·L−1 Mn(II), 100.0 mg·L−1 Fe(III), and 35.0 °C), the Mn(II) removal efficiency reached 93.6 ± 0.8% at an initial pH of 4.0. Approximately 68.0% of the Mn(II) was removed through adsorption, and the remainder was attributed to oxidation. The Mn(II) oxidation rate was ~ 0.05 mM·d−1 (initial pH of 4.0), comparable with other MnOB performing under near-neutral solutions. Ferric ions (Fe(III)) can form amorphous iron hydroxides, facilitating sorptive removal and catalytic oxidation of Mn(II). In contrast, ferrous ions (Fe(II)) reductively dissolve manganese oxides, inhibiting Mn(II) removal. A mechanism for the biological removal of Mn(II) was proposed, and the performance of Achromobacter sp. strain QBM-4 was further verified in three types of mine drainage.

Free ammonia (FAN) inhibition is commonly encountered during high solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) of pig manure. The performance of HSAD is highly related to its operational water regime; however, little information is available regarding the dynamics of free ammonia with varied water regimes. In this work, four treatments were set with equal amount of water supply but varied addition frequencies, i.e. add once but at different times in treatments T1 and T2, add twice in T3 while it was three times in treatment T4. In this study, exogenous Megasphaera elsdenii inoculum and acetate supplementation were introduced at the acidogenic phase to regulate the acidogenic fermentation pathway and assess their effects on food waste (FW) carbon conversion in two-phase anaerobic digestion (AD) system. These two additives significantly accelerated organic removal efficiency and subsequently increased FW hydrolysis and acidogenesis by 16% and 35%, respectively. As expected, two exogenous additives promoted butyrate fermentation during FW acidogenesis. With regard to the role of exogenous additives, both hydrogen and butyrate yields increased by over 60%. This desired increment resulted in a 25% increase in methane production. The overall carbon conversion from FW in the integrated two-phase AD system was enhanced by biochemical additives, which was 1.3-fold higher than that in control without any additives. Collectively, findings demonstrate the feasibility of regulating acidogenic fermentation via exogenous biochemical additives and its benefits on FW carbon conversion during AD process.

Implementing this will helps to avoid the negative environmental impact and global warming. The application of the circular bioeconomy (CB) and the circular economic models have been shown to be a great opportunity for facing the waste and by-products issues by bringing sustainable processing systems which allow to the value chains be more responsible and resilient. In addition, biorefinery approach coupled to CB context could offer different solution and insights to conquer the current challenges related to decrease the fossil fuel dependency as well as increase efficiency of resource recovery and processing cost of the industrial residues. It is worth to remark the important role that the biotechnological processes such as fermentative, digestive and enzymatic conversions play for an effective waste management and carbon neutrality.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can clearly reflect composting components changes, thus it is supposed to indicate the humification process during composting. To demonstrate this, three compost mixtures and two techniques were arranged. DOM evolution was detected by three spectral techniques. This research explored the influence of distillers' grains amendment on the humification performance and microbial communities during rice straw composting. The composition of dissolved organic matter and maturity index were analyzed by the fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis. High-throughput sequencing and redundancy analysis were employed for revealing the structure dynamics for microbial community and their shaping factors, respectively. Results indicated that addition of distillers' grains effectively increased the microbial activity, which was beneficial to the organic matter degradation and nitrogen conservation. Microbial community structures were significantly changed with different amendment strategies. Nitrate, water soluble carbon, organic matter, ammonium were the key parameters influencing the variation of bacterial community in different treatments. Water soluble carbon significantly affected the dominant fungal community dynamics. These results showed that addition of distillers' grains effectively improved the nutritional status and changed the microbial communities during rice straw composting.

To achieve a cleaner production, textile wastewater with high organic and salt content can be treated by using Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis (BMED) to minimize acid and base consumption in a dyeing process. While the dye molecules may foul the ion exchange membranes and strongly affect the desalination process. This work aimed to investigate the performance and fouling mechanisms of BMED during desalination of sodium sulfate from Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR). Results showed that maintaining the zeta potential of RBBR above −25 mV may mitigate fouling of AEM during the BMED process. This confirms that, zeta potential of charged foulants (RBBR) plays a key role in terms of controlling membrane fouling. Accordingly, a new parameter “critical salt concentration” was introduced to control membrane fouling. Furthermore, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), FT-IR and electrochemical analysis confirmed that fouling of anion exchange membrane by RBBR was due to electrostatic interaction. Finally, it was calculated that 72.02% of sodium and 66.9% of sulfate in the feed were converted to NaOH and H2SO4, respectively. This study proves that BMED process may be an alternative way treating textile wastewater with high salinity and the presence of dye molecules.

Composting technologies have come a long way, developing from static heaps and windrow composting to smart, artificial intelligence-assisted reactor composting. While in previous years, much attention has been paid to identifying ideal organic waste streams and suitable co-composting candidates, more recent efforts tried to determine novel process-enhancing supplements. These include various single and mixed microbial cultures, additives, bulking agents, or combinations thereof. However, there is still ample need to fine-tune the composting process in order to reduce its impact on the environment and streamline it with circular economy goals. In this review, we highlight recent advances in integrating mathematical modelling, novel supplements, and reactor designs with (vermi-) composting practices and provide an outlook for future developments. These results should serve as reference point to target adjusting screws for process improvement and provide a guideline for waste management officials and stakeholders.

In recent years, 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has attracted much attention as the precursor of bio-polyester materials. A coupled process of ultrasonic-assisted dilute acid pretreatment and MnO2 was designed in this study to directly produce FDCA from lignocellulosic biomass, which is different from the traditional preparation process. Moreover, the critical parameters in the process were analyzed and optimized by the response surface method. The yield of FDCA could reach 52.1% under the optimal conditions. The reaction mechanism indicated that heavy metal elements in lignocellulosic biomass could play the role of the Lewis acid catalyst to promote the formation of FDCA to a certain extent. With the increase of temperature, the heavy metals transfer in biomass from the solid phase to the liquid phase increased, but most of them remain in the former. Therefore, further purification and treatment measures are worthy of attention.

Pyrolysis and gasification of food waste has been identified as a potential emerging waste-to-energy technology. This chapter presented an overview on pyrolysis and gasification of food waste. The characteristics of various pyrolysis and gasification reactors and the parameters such as moisture content, temperature, and copyrolysis are summarized in this chapter. The characteristics and utilization of gas, liquid, and biochar produced during pyrolysis and gasification are discussed. The main factors that affect the pyrolysis and gasification of food waste are the proportion of various materials, the pyrolysis and gasification temperatures, the type of reactor, and the operating parameters. Furthermore, improvements in pyrolysis and gasification of food waste are proposed. To improve resource recovery, it is necessary to optimize the control parameters, increase the reaction rate, promote the high value of the target product, inhibit the formation of other products and pollutants, and investigate the mechanism of the operation parameters so as to produce more useful products toward zero discharge in the further study.

The aim of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive review of the emerging technologies applied in food waste (FW) treatment from the aspect of cascade utilization, i.e., various high-value products derived from FW, fast volume reduction by biodrying, and energy recovery by comanagement of FW and domestic wastewater. Various value-added products can be selectively extracted from the FW matrix through combined biochemical, chemical, or thermal/physical approaches, including biomolecules (sugars, peptides, amino acids, etc.) and calcium-based and carbon-based absorbent materials. The biodrying process can be a promising alternative to treat humid FW at a large volume and high-quality refuse-derived fuel can be harvested. Anaerobic digestion processes often encounter difficulties such as frequent process failure and long retention time of the substrate, thus the feasibility of incorporating FW into domestic wastewater treatment plants via different scenarios is discussed.

Anaerobic digestion has been recognized as an economical and effective way for food waste treatment and resource recovery. This chapter presented an overview on the researches about anaerobic digestion of food waste. Biochemical parameters and synergistic effect together with possible inhibition factors are analyzed to characterize the microbial catalyzed bioelectrochemical process. Phased anaerobic digestion (AD) and emerging AD-based bioelectrochemical systems including microbial fuel cell, microbial electrodialysis cell, and microbial electrosynthesis are introduced and evaluated. Resource recovery from AD of food waste in terms of CH4, H2, CH4, and H2 and volatile fatty acids are summarized. For the promotion of resource recovery, more attention should be paid to integrated technologies that can produce more useful products toward zero discharge. Furthermore a technological route for food waste conversion based on anaerobic digestion was proposed.

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production plays an important role in the process of anaerobic digestion (AD), which is often the critical factor determining the metabolic pathways and energy recovery efficiency. Fermenting bacteria and acetogenic bacteria are in syntrophic relations during AD. Thus, clear elucidation of the interspecies electron transfer and energetic mechanisms among syntrophic bacteria is essential for optimization of acidogenic. This review aims to discuss the electron transfer and energetic mechanism in syntrophic processes between fermenting bacteria and acetogenic bacteria during VFAs production. Homoacetogenesis also plays a role in the syntrophic system by converting H2 and CO2 to acetate. Potential applications of these syntrophic activities in bioelectrochemical system and value-added product recovery from AD of organic wastes are also discussed. The study of acidogenic syntrophic relations is in its early stages, and additional investigation is required to better understand the mechanism of syntrophic relations.

Microalgae technology is a promising method for treating piggery digestate, while its removal ability of humic acids (HAs) is poor. Here, an electric field-microalgae system (EFMS) was used to improve the removal of HAs from the piggery digestate. Results indicated that the removal of HAs by EFMS relied on the initial concentration of HAs, electrical intensity, the initial inoculation concentration of microalgae and pH. Values of these parameters were optimized as electrical intensity of 1.2 V/cm, microalgae initial inoculation concentration of 0.1 g/L and pH 5.0. The HAs removal efficiency by EFMS (55.38%) was 13% and 38% higher than that by single electric field and microalgal technology. It was observed that oxidation, coagulation and assimilation contributed to the removal of HAs, suggesting that EFMS could serve as an attractive and cost-effective technique for the removal of HAs from the piggery digestate.

This experiment was carried out to explore the effects of biochar, biogas residue and their combination amendment on enzyme activities and their stoichiometry during agricultural waste composting. A comprehensive analysis of the variation in, and stoichiometric correlations between, β-glucosidase (BG), N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) were determined. The results showed that biochar, biogas residue, and their combined addition significantly increased those enzyme activities. The potential C:P and N:P acquisition activities represented by ln(BG): ln(AKP) and ln(LAP + NAG): ln(AKP), were significantly decreased with biogas residue addition. BG, NAG and LAP were significantly negatively correlated with temperature, organic matter and water-soluble carbon. Redundancy analysis also showed that moisture and water-soluble carbon were significantly related to the variations of enzyme activities. Biochar and biogas residue changed the characteristics of the composting substrate, thus affecting the activity and stoichiometry of functional enzymes involved in C, N and P cycling.

Agriculture bio-waste is one of the largest sectors for nutrient circulation and resource recovery. This review intends to summarize the possible scheme through coupling chemical conversion of crop straws to biochar and biological conversion of livestock waste to value-added products thus reaching key nutrient circulation. Chemical conversion of crop straws to biochar was reviewed through summarizing the preparation methods and functional modification of biochar. Then, high-solid two-phase anaerobic conversion of agriculture bio-waste to value-added products and improved performance of bio-conversion through byproduct gases reuse and biochar supplementation were reviewed. Finally, high quality compost production through amendment of biochar and residual digestate was proposed with analysis of reduced nitrogen emission and carbon balance. The biological mechanism of synergistic regulation of carbon and nitrogen loss during bio-conversion with biochar was also reviewed. This will provide a model for synergistic conversion of agricultural wastes to value added products pursuing key nutrient circulation.

Wastewater treatment is in a dilemma: more energy and efforts have to be put forth to obtain an effluent with better quality, while a significant amount of sludge is generated and the treatment or disposal expenses are high. Even if the sludge is disposed of properly, the components can be released and pollute the environment again. Therefore, conversion and recovery of the contaminants to resources is the way out of the dilemma. An ion exchange membrane (IEM) is a special type of membrane, which allows charged solutes to pass through it while retaining uncharged components. Attributed to this character, IEMs are taking more important roles in separation and conversion processes recently. They act as key elements in many resource recovery systems, such as in separation and concentration, salt valorization, energy conversion, and even in microbial systems. Performance of two novel designed anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBRs) for wastewater treatment at long hydraulic retention time (HRT, 47 days) and high sludge concentration (22 g·L−1) was investigated. Results showed steady chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal (> 98%) and mean biogas generation of 0.29 LCH4·g−1COD. Average permeates flux of 58.70 L·m−2·h−1 and 54.00 L·m−2·h−1 were achieved for reactors A and B, respectively. On top of reactor configuration, long HRT caused biofilm reduction by heterotrophic bacteria Chloroflexi resulting in high membrane flux. Mean total membrane resistances (2.23 × 109 m−1) and fouling rates (4.00 × 108 m−1·day−1) of both reactors were low suggesting better membrane fouling control ability of both AnMBRs. Effluent quality analysis showed the effluent soluble microbial products (SMP) were dominated by proteins compared to carbohydrates, and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) analysis revealed effluent from both reactors had low aromaticity with SUVA < 1 (L·mg−1·m−1) except for the first ten days.

Recently, efficient disposal of food waste (FW) with potential resource recovery has attracted great attentions. Due to its easily biodegradable nature, rich nutrient availability and high moisture content, FW is regarded as favorable substrate for anaerobic digestion (AD). Both waste disposal and energy recovery can be fulfilled during AD of FW. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) which are the products of the first-two stages of AD, are widely applied in chemical industry as platform chemicals recently. Concentration and distribution of VFAs is the result of acidogenic metabolic pathways, which can be affected by the micro-environment (e.g. pH) in the digester. Hence, the clear elucidation of the acidogenic metabolic pathways is essential for optimization of acidogenic process for efficient product recovery. This review summarizes major acidogenic metabolic pathways and regulating strategies for enhancing VFAs recovery during acidogenic fermentation of FW.

Resource recovery from piggery biogas slurry has become an inevitable demand for sustainable development of pig industry. Microalgae show great potential in recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from piggery slurry, but struggle to utilize organic pollutants, as most of them are inert components (e.g., humic acids, HAs). In this study, nano-TiO2 was used to enhance the utilization of HAs by microalgae from piggery biogas slurry. Results showed that the optimal conditions for microalgal growth and HAs removal by the microalgae-TiO2 coupling system were TiO2 dosage of 0.30 g/L, microalgal inoculation concentration of 0.40 g/L, light intensity of 360 µmol photon/(m2·s) and temperature of 30 °C, with the microalgal chlorophyll concentration of 6.51 mg/L and HAs removal efficiency of 50.14%. Analysis of HAs composition variations in the piggery biogas slurry indicated that the decrease of HAs was caused by their decomposition into small molecules under the photocatalytic reactions of TiO2.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste is widely accepted as a promising technology for both waste disposal and resource recovery. With the advancing of AD technology, to exploit the capacity of organic waste for maximum energy/resource recovery becomes the new focus and hence, improve the viability of this technology for practical application. Product inhibition and mass transfer are the common limitations encountered during AD of putrescible organic waste. Biochar materials have been widely used to promote AD process in recent years. This review summarizes the mechanism and regulation strategies of biochar and its modified derivatives in promoting AD of solid waste (mainly food waste) from the three aspects of hydrolysis, syntrophic acetogenesis, and methane production. At the same time, the relationship between carbon materials and electron transfer among anaerobic microbes is summarized from the perspective of microbial community. In addition, the market application of this technology was evaluated.
