Background: We hereby report the first occurrence of Helobdella octatestisaca in North Africa, specifically in Tunisia, as a likely introduced species from the Neotropical Region. Historically, leeches bearing a prominent chitinous scute on their dorsal surface were commonly diagnosed as H. stagnalis. Most probably, H. octatestisaca had previously been misidentified as H. stagnalis in Tunisia. Methods and results: The identification was primarily based on morphological evidence, supplemented by genetic data obtained from COI DNA barcoding. The morphology of the examined specimens was consistent with the original species description, notably characterized by the presence of four pairs of testisacs. To support our findings, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis using the Maximum Likelihood method based on COI alignment constructed with the newly obtained sequence from Tunisian specimens and complete or nearly complete 'Folmer fragment' sequences of congeners sourced from the GenBank database. Conclusions: This study highlights the first identification of H. octatestisaca in North Africa and suggests that previous records of H. stagnalis in Tunisia likely misidentified this species. The present study examined the histopathological changes and some parameters of oxidative stress in the testes of the freshwater leech Limnatis nilotica, following their exposure to 50 µg l−1 of cadmium (Cd). The protective effects of salicylic acid (SA) in mitigating Cd-induced oxidative and histopathological injury were also investigated. We found that Cd exposure caused several histopathological changes in leech testes, such as vacuolisation of spermatogenic cysts which were strongly destroyed and disorganised. Biochemical study showed oxidative stress damage marked by a substantial increase in malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxidase levels as well as disturbance in the activity of the leech antioxidant system. Interestingly, the testes from the Cd and SA leech-exposed group exhibited increased enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant mechanism defenses, including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, oxidized glutathione, thiols, and ascorbic acid, in comparison with the testes of leeches exposed to Cd alone. Thus, SA supplementation considerably attenuated the histopathological lesions induced by Cd exposure, thereby restoring the normal appearance of the testes. In summary, the findings of this study indicate that SA treatment ameliorated the testicular histopathological and oxidative stress-induced damages caused by exposure to Cd through enhancing the antioxidant defense system. This study was carried out to investigate a paradigm of predation under natural conditions in Bizerta lagoon. The free-living marine polyclad flatworm Imogine mediterranea was found to feed on the commercial mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Such predation could represent a real threat to mytiliculture at this site. Our field experiments have shown that the mortality of the commercial mussel as a result of active predation by this polyclad is approximately 52% when one polyclad and one prey were placed together in a same experimental container. We found a statistically significant relationship between the size of the polyclad and the extent to which the mussels were disabled or completely eaten. Moreover, in our field experiments, the times required for predation-caused decreases of populations of the bivalves, that is, LT10, LT25 and LT50, decreased significantly with increases in the size of the polyclad. The time, LT50, required for polyclads to kill half of the bivalve population in field experiments was approximately 4.5 days. A simple disabling (an attack by the polyclad on the adductor muscle of the mussel) was shown to be sufficient to cause irreversible changes leading to mortality. Furthermore, disabling and mortality were found to be linearly correlated. The importance of mucous secretions, pharyngeal type and body musculature in supporting predation by polyclads is discussed. We suggest that measures to control the polyclad pest could incorporate the control of this flatworm's embryonic and postembryonic developmental stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the process of spermatogenesis in the leech Hirudo troctina Johnson, 1816 using light, fluorescent and transmission electron microscopy. At the onset of spermatogenesis in testes, the pear-shaped spermatogonia divide mitotically without full cytokinesis and as a result isogenic groups are formed (clusters, clones) with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 spermatogonia and, finally, 256 primary spermatocytes occur. The final meiotic divisions of spermatocytes give rise to clones with 1024 spermatids. There are hundreds of developing germ-line clones in each testis. In each clone, the male germ cells divide in full synchrony and they are in the same phase of spermatogenesis. During complex spermiogenesis each spermatid becomes a filiform spermatozoon with a helicoid nucleus, which is characterized by the presence of a long acrosome with two regions - anterior and posterior, which are followed by a helicoid nucleus, a midpiece with only one mitochondrion and a long flagellum. Our results were compared to those on other clitellate annelids that have been studied to date, especially to sperm formation in Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus, 1785. Up to now in Tunisia, freshwater Hirudinida are represented by two mainly haematophagous families: Hirudinidae and Glossiphonidae, and a predatory one: the family Erpobdellidae. The present study provides new information on the diversity and taxonomy of erpobdellid leeches. Identification was based, in addition to morphological data, on the length of sperm ducts and the lengths of ovisacs in relation to the neurosomite (ns) and on the shape and size of the male atrium. Five taxons are found. Two subspecies are reported for the first time in the country: Dina punctata punctata Johansson, 1927 and Dina punctata maroccana Nesemann and Neubert, 1994. Tunisian populations of two species, Erpobdella testacea (Savigny, 1820) and Trocheta africana Nesemann and Neubert, 1994, are described, with records of new localities. The new Trocheta tunisiana n. sp. is discovered and described in detail. Trocheta species live in springs in elevated areas while Erpobdella seem to prefer low altitude reservoirs. A comprehensive comparison of the three genera is presented. The disparity between the actual systematics and phylogeny is discussed. This study gives also a detailed distribution of the five species in the north of Tunisia with notes on ecological preference of the genus Dina. Finally a key for the determination of freshwater erpobdellid species from Tunisia is proposed.

There has been very few papers on leeches of Batracobdella algira. The aim of the presently reported study was to provide the measurements and, for the first time, description and characteristics of the reproductive and digestive systems of B. algira. The material used in this study was collected from frogs, Rana saharica Boulenger, 1913, in April 1987 by H. Hotz in Béja in Tunisia (11 individuals) and by R. Ben Ahmed in 2008 from the skin of Bufo mauritanicus Schlegel, 1841 in Nabeul in Tunisia (18 individuals). The relative length of the specimens ranges between 1.48 and 4.07. The digestive system of leeches has a standard structure for the species from the family Glossiphoniidae. Male and female gonopores are separated by two annuli. Ovisacs are as long as 5 neurosomits. The characteristic features of the male reproductive system of Batracobdella are sperm ducts, which are twisted in a small area and placed near to atrium. This study will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of the host-parasite relation.
