Purpose This study aims to determine how to influence the customer journey of mobile food ordering applications (MFOAs) users. It researches how available information could influence customers’ intention to use MFOAs platforms in the prepurchase stage and explores the potential of personalized information to improve customer satisfaction with these services in the postpurchase stage. Design/methodology/approach This research followed a mixed design, combining qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative (online survey) research and using both content analysis and partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings Two types of available information (firm-generated information and online customer reviews) had a positive influence on the behavioral intention to use MFOAs. Additionally, findings showed that different web personalization strategies, namely, content personalization, functional personalization and system-driven personalization, were useful tools to create customer satisfaction with this type of platform. Research limitations/implications The study discusses limitations regarding the sample and sampling process, indicator variables and measures. Practical implications The present research provides actionable insights for online food delivery providers. Originality/value This study addresses a research gap in the literature and provides a novel and richer understanding of customer behavior toward mobile food delivery platforms. Also, it adds to the personalization research by identifying and testing a range of web personalization strategies.

The Internet of Things is advancing as a new technological paradigm with enormous economic and societal implications. Network connectivity provides the basis. With this in mind, past and current conflicts surrounding the licensing and enforcement of standard essential patents (SEPs) in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector cast a shadow over IoT development. Focusing on the European approach based on competition law, this article explores the extent to which the existing legal framework, which has been mainly developed against the backdrop of problems in the mobile industry, will be capable of responding adequately to the challenges raised by the IoT.

Diarrheic diseases account for the annual death of approximately 1.9 million children under the age of 5 years, and it is a major cause of work absenteeism in developed countries. As diarrheagenic bacteria, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) attach to cells in the small intestine, causing local disappearance of microvilli and inducing the formation of actin-rich pedestals that disrupt the intestinal barrier and help EPEC adhere to and infect intestinal cells. Antibiotics and other bioactive compounds can often be found by analyzing traditional medicines. Here a crude aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa, which typically grows in subtropical and tropical areas and is a popular medicinal tisane in many countries, was analyzed for antibacterial activity against EPEC. In standard microdilution assays, the extract showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 6.5 mg/ml against EPEC growth. Time-kill kinetics assays demonstrated significant 24 h bactericidal activity at 25 mg/ml. The extract is able to impede pedestal induction. Not only did the extract inhibit preformed pedestals but it prevented pedestal induction as well. Remarkably, it also promoted the formation of EPEC filaments, as observed with other antibiotics. Our results in vitro support the potential of Hibiscus sabdariffa as an antimicrobial agent against EPEC.

ResumenBrucella abortus es el agente causal de la brucelosis bovina, enfermedad zoonótica que se encuentra ampliamente distribuida en el mundo. Actualmente existen ocho biovariedades de B. abortus. En Argentina se encuentra con mayor frecuencia la biovariedad 1, pero también se suele aislar la biovariedad 2, que es más patogénica que la anterior. Resulta necesario contar con métodos de tipificación que tengan la resolución suficiente para permitir el seguimiento epidemiológico de los brotes de brucelosis y de los programas de control de la enfermedad. Debido a la gran homogeneidad genética que existe entre las distintas especies del género Brucella, ha sido dificultoso el desarrollo de herramientas moleculares para realizar el análisis epidemiológico de los aislamientos. La publicación del genoma de varias especies de Brucella facilitó el diseño de estas herramientas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue emplear un esquema de análisis multilocus de VNTR en aislamientos de Argentina obtenidos en nuestro laboratorio. De los 56 aislamientos analizados se obtuvieron 47 perfiles genotípicos diferentes. El empleo de este esquema permitió asignarles a dichos aislamientos la biovariedad correspondiente. A través del análisis goeBURST se pudo relacionar a todos los genotipos entre sí, y además, proponer al genotipo de la biovariedad 2 como fundador.AbstractBrucella abortus is the causative agent of bovine brucellosis, a worldwide zoonosis. Up to date, eight biovars of B. abortus have been described. In Argentina, biovar 1 is the most frequently isolated. However, biovar 2, which is more pathogenic than biovar 1, is also found. Molecular methods for subtyping isolates are necessary for allowing epidemiological surveillance and control of eradication programs. Due to the genetic homogeneity of the genus Brucella, the development of molecular typing tools has been difficult. The publication of microorganism genomes facilitates the design of this approach. The aim of this work was to employ a Multiple Locus VNTR Analysis (MLVA) scheme for strains from Argentina isolated in our laboratory. From the 56 isolates analyzed, 47 different genotypic profiles were obtained. All the strains typed as biovar 2 showed the same profile. This scheme allowed assigning each isolate to the biovar it belongs to. All the genotypes were related using the goeBURST analysis and biovar 2 was proposed as founder.

The competition-related provisions in the TRIPS Agreement were very much influenced by the context in which the Agreement was concluded. The inclusion of competition provisions served a specific purpose. Competition law was basically seen as a tool to facilitate the transfer of technology. Twenty years after the entry into force of TRIPS, the legal landscape within which IPRs are exercised has experienced tremendous changes on the IP front, as well as on the competition law front. IP protection tends to be raised beyond the minimum standards of TRIPS, questionable protection has been granted specially in the field of patents, enforcement mechanisms and remedies have been strengthened and IP portfolios are strategically used in the markets. From an international perspective, higher IP standards have been exported through bilateral and regional trade agreements. Competition law is developing at a very fast speed, especially in emerging and developing economies. Moreover, competition law and IP laws are increasingly understood as being complementary to each other. A strict and “conflict oriented” reading of TRIPS’ competition provisions does not help to cope with the new strategies of innovation and the new forms of use of IPRs. We argue in this paper that a flexible reading of the competition-related provisions in TRIPS provides enough room for applying competition law as an innovation instrument. Hence, the application of competition law to combat IP-related restraints of competition that inhibit innovation would be covered by the rationale of the TRIPS Agreement just as much as an application of competition law aimed at enhancing access to and dissemination of IP-protected products.

The objective of the present study was to compare the performance of three serological tests for diagnosis of Brucella abortus infections in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). Serum samples collected from 696 adult females were submitted to the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA-C), (I-ELISA), fluorescence polarization test (FPA), 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-ME) and complement fixation test (CFT). The gold standard was the combination of CFT and 2-ME, considering as positive the reactors in both CFT and 2-ME, and as negative those non-reactors. ROC analyses were done for C-ELISA, I-ELISA and FPA and the Kappa agreement index were also calculated. The best combinations of relative sensitivity (SEr) and relative specificity (SPr) and Kappa were given by C-ELISA (96.9%, 99.1%, and 0.932, respectively) and FPA (92.2%, 97.6 and 0.836, respectively). The C-ELISA and FPA were the most promising confirmatory tests for the serological diagnosis of brucellosis in buffaloes, and for these tests, cut-off values for buffaloes may be the same as those used for bovines.O presente estudo objetivou comparar o desempenho de três testes para o sorodiagnóstico da Brucella abortus em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis). Soros de 696 fêmeas bubalinas adultas foram submetidos aos testes: teste imunoenzimático indireto (ELISA-I), teste imunoenzimático competitivo (ELISA-C), teste de polarização fluorescente (TPF), 2-mercaptoetanol (2-ME) e teste de fixação do complemento (FC). Foi empregada, como gold standard, a combinação de dois testes, FC e 2-ME. A curva ROC foi construída para os três testes: ELISA-I, ELISA-C e PF e, com base nos resultados desta análise, foi calculado o índice de concordância Kappa para cada teste. As melhores combinações de sensibilidade (Sr) e especificidade (Er) e os melhores resultados de Kappa foram alcançados pelo ELISA-C (96,9%, 99,1% e 0,932, respectivamente), seguido pelo PF (92,2%, 97,6%, e 0,836, respectivamente). Concluiu-se que os resultados dos estudos com os testes ELISA-C e PF em bovinos podem ser inferidos para búfalos com razoável segurança e que ambos demonstraram ser testes confirmatórios promissores para a espécie estudada.

The study compared the performance of three screening serological tests: buffered plate antigen (BPA), RoseBengal produced with 1119-3 Brucella abortus strain (RB1119-3), and Rose-Bengal produced with 99 Brucella abortus strain (RB99). Sera from 696 adult female animals were submitted to BPA, RB1119-3, RB99, 2mercaptoethanol test (ME), and complement fixation test (FC). The gold standard was the combination of CF and ME. The Kappa values for BPA, RB99, and RB1119-3 were 0.82, 0.74, and 0.70, respectively. The relative sensitivity and specificity for the same tests were 0.98 and 0.96, 0.92 and 0.94, and 0.95 and 0.92, respectively. These results indicate that BPA is a better screening test than RB for buffalo, regardless of the B. abortus strain in RB.

Self-assembled phases based on monoglycerides are promising candidates for drug delivery systems. Alterations of these phases need to be performed by addition of substances which are biocompatible. Inverse bicontinuous cubic phases are altered by the addition of five amino acids, namely, glycine, phenylalanine, alanine, glutamine, and tryptophan. These natural molecules have a diversity of side chains which predicts their polarity and subsequently their interaction with the interfacial region. Whereas polar amino acids cause a slight shrinking of the fully hydrated phase, amino acids with a nonpolar side chain expand it. Tryptophan is also able to provoke a growth of inverse hexagonal, micellar cubic, and micellar structures. Amino acid concentrations in the aqueous phase, even above the amino acid's solubility, further affect all aforementioned structures and cause a significant enlargement of up to 26%. Besides the amino acids' impact on the structural sizes, they also affect the phase transition temperatures.

This contribution represents the comments of the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law, Munich (Germany), on the DG Competition White Paper of April 2008 on damages actions for breach of the EC antitrust rules. The White Paper forms part of the European Commission’s strategy of enhancing private enforcement of European competition law through damage claims. The White Paper was preceded by several comparative reports and a by Green Paper. It is likely that it will form the basis for future policy instruments in the field of private enforcement. The present contribution discusses some recurring issues of private antitrust enforcement in Europe. It proceeds to analyse eight specific legal issues that the White Paper had put forward for public comment: standing of indirect purchasers and collective redress; access to evidence; binding effect, across Member States’ borders, of decisions adopted by national competition authorities; the fault requirement as a prerequisite to civil liability; definition and quantification of damages; the passing-on defence; limitation periods; costs of damages actions; and, finally, the interaction between leniency programs and actions for damages. The paper advocates excluding the passing-on defence, and instead implementing a separate mechanism for dividing the overcharge between purchasers on different levels of the distribution chain. Overall, we welcome the proposal to give private damage claims a more prominent role as an instrument for enforcing the competition rules in Europe. Nevertheless, the enforcement of the widely harmonised European competition rules by means of national rules on civil procedure might create tensions with traditional legal principles in some Member States.
