4. Game-Based Activities Targeting Visual Literacy Skills to Increase Understanding of Biomolecule Structure and Function Concepts in Undergraduate Biochemistry

Abstract

Introductory biochemistry courses are often challenging for students because they require the integration of chemistry, biology, physics, math, and physiology knowledge and frameworks to understand and apply a large body of knowledge. This can be complicated by students' persistent misconceptions of fundamental concepts and lack of fluency with the extensive visual and symbolic literacy used in biochemistry. Card sorting tasks and game-based activities have been used to reveal insights into how students are assimilating, organizing, and structuring disciplinary knowledge, and how they are progressing along a continuum from disciplinary novice to expert. In this study, game-based activities and card sorting tasks were used to promote and evaluate students' understanding of fundamental structure-function relationships in biochemistry. Our results suggest that while many markers of expertise increased for both the control and intervention groups over the course of the semester, students involved in the intervention activities tended to move further towards expert-like sorting. This indicates that intentional visual literacy game-based activities have the ability to build underdeveloped skills in undergraduate students.

6. Cygnet psycho-educational intervention programme for parents of children on the autistic spectrum : a study exploring changes in the parents' perceived self-efficacy, wellbeing and their children's behaviour

Abstract

Aim: When a child receives a diagnosis of autism, their parents will often find it difficult to understand the condition and its impact on the child’s behaviour. As a result, parents often seek help to obtain a better understanding of autism and strategies to help them address these difficulties. The Cygnet programme is a parenting intervention designed to meet such needs delivered by educational psychologists in the United Kingdom. To date, there has been little research on the effectiveness of this intervention. Method: This study consisted of a small-scale evaluation of cohorts attending seven separate programmes within one local authority. A non-randomised, mixed methods was adopted and comprised an intervention group (n=24) of parents who attended a Cygnet programme and a control group (n=16) of parents on the waiting list to attend the programme. All parents completed standardised questionnaires of perceived parental self-efficacy, wellbeing and child behaviour at three time points (0, 6 and 18 weeks). A sample (n=6) of programme attendees were interviewed to provide qualitative data. Findings: The quantitative data obtained did not demonstrate statistically significant differences between the two groups. However, the qualitative data found that the Cygnet Intervention was beneficial for parents of a child with autism. All the parents interviewed were extremely positive about the programme, not just for the knowledge they acquired and subsequently were able to utilise, but for the contact they had with parents in a similar situation. The study also found statistically significant associations between perceived self-efficacy and wellbeing and perceived wellbeing and child behaviour for the Intervention group, which were not replicated in the Control Group. Conclusions: Attendance on the Cygnet programme provided the parents with increased self-efficacy and wellbeing with some perceived improvements in their child’s behaviour. Limitations of this study and areas for future research were also discussed.

Abstract

As the urgency to limit global warming has intensified, negative emissions technology such as direct air capture and carbon sequestration are increasingly considered in climate mitigation scenarios. When Iceland opened the commercial-grade direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) facility in 2021, this marked a breakthrough for DACCS technology as a scalable climate mitigation solution. This study investigates the adoption of DACCS in Iceland and the potential for diffusion into other contexts as a global decarbonization solution. We implement expert interviews to analyze the adoption of technology, and to identify the various requirements of scaling DACCS into local and global contexts. Using inductive thematic analysis, we characterize the diverging perspectives on the role of carbon dioxide removal as a climate mitigation solution and also identify pathways toward technology upscaling at national, regional, and global scales. Despite the successful technology demonstration of DACCS, we find that experts hold different mental models of climate mitigation generally, characterized as "nature vs. technology." We also find that experts clearly articulate the necessary conditions for the diffusion of DACCS more broadly, including explicit regulatory measures as guardrails against a "license to pollute" as well as bilateral governance structures that include financial investment. Finally, we find that the importance of public acceptance of the technology was noted among all expert groups. Limited data exist on the acceptance of DACCS paired with renewable energy and this is a future research recommendation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Extensive portions of the human genome have unknown function, including those derived from transposable elements. One such element, the DNA transposon Hsmar1, entered the primate lineage approximately 50 million years ago leaving behind terminal inverted repeat (TIR) sequences and a single intact copy of the Hsmar1 transposase, which retains its ancestral TIR-DNA-binding activity, and is fused with a lysine methyltransferase SET domain to constitute the chimeric SETMAR gene. Here, we provide a structural basis for recognition of TIRs by SETMAR and investigate the function of SETMAR through genome-wide approaches. As elucidated in our 2.37 Å crystal structure, SETMAR forms a dimeric complex with each DNA-binding domain bound specifically to TIRDNA through the formation of 32 hydrogen bonds. We found that SETMAR recognizes primarily TIR sequences (-5000 sites) within the human genome as assessed by chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing analysis. In two SETMAR KO cell lines, we identified 163 shared differentially expressed genes and 233 shared alternative splicing events. Among these genes are several pre-mRNA-splicing factors, transcription factors, and genes associated with neuronal function, and one alternatively spliced primate-specific gene, TMEM14B, which has been identified as a marker for neocortex expansion associated with brain evolution. Taken together, our results suggest a model in which SETMAR impacts differential expression and alternative splicing of genes associated with transcription and neuronal function, potentially through both its TIR-specific DNA-binding and lysine methyltransferase activities, consistent with a role for SETMAR in simian primate development. 32. Acute care physical therapist evaluation and intervention for an adult after right hemispherectomy. (Case Report)

Abstract

Background and Purpose. Hemispherectomy is performed to help control intractable seizures, yet little research quantifies and projects the clinical course of the impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities of patients who have undergone the procedure. This case report describes the physical therapist preoperative and postoperative examination, evaluation, and intervention during the acute hospitalization of an adult who underwent a right hemispherectomy. Case Description. The patient was a 27-year-old man who had intractable seizures despite having tried multiple drug regimens and undergoing several surgical interventions after a brain injury at age 5 years. He underwent a right functional hemispherectomy and then had 9 postoperative physical therapy sessions during his acute hospitalization. Outcomes. The patient made rapid gains, surpassing all initial goals. At discharge, the patient had distal left-sided sensorimotor impairments, but he was able to ambulate 121.9 m (400 ft) with assistance to maintain his balance. Discussion. The patient's posthemispherectomy recovery was rapid. His brain injury at a young age may have triggered preoperative transfer of function to the unaffected left hemisphere. The prognosis for this patient's improvements of impairments and functional limitations was better than initially expected, perhaps because of the redundant features and plasticity of the central nervous system. Abstract

The session explores the potential for “Patron Driven Acquisition” (PDA) as a model for the acquisition of online video. Today, PDA has become a standard model of acquisition in the eBook market, more effectively aligning spend with use and increased return on investment (ROI). PDA is an unexplored model for acquisition of video, for which library collection development is complicated by higher storage and delivery costs, labor overheads for content selection and acquisition, and a dynamic film industry in which media and the technology that supports it is changing daily. Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and La Trobe University in Australia launched a research project in collaboration with Kanopy to explore the opportunity for PDA of video. The study relied on three data sources: (1) national surveys to compare the video purchasing and use practices of colleges, (2) on-campus pilot projects of PDA models to assess user engagement and behavior, and (3) testing of various user applications and features to support the model. The study incorporates usage statistics and survey data and builds upon a peer-reviewed research paper presented at the VALA 2014 conference in Melbourne, Australia. This session will be conducted by the researchers and will graphically present the results from the study. It will map out a future for video PDA, and how libraries can more cost-effectively acquire and maximize the discoverability of online video. The presenters will also solicit input and welcome questions from audience members.

Abstract

The VErtex LOcator (VELO) is the silicon microstrip vertexing and triggering sub-detector of the LHCb experiment. It consists of a series of forward disks with the active region ex- tending to just 8 mm from the LHC beams. The current status of the VELO is presented. Due to the high radiation environment, the VELO may have to be replaced after some years, possibly with new materials. A candidate material is Czochralski silicon. We present here promising new results on the first test beam of a large, high resistivity Czochralski microstrip silicon detector read out with LHC speed electronics. The performance was studied before and after irradiation with high energy protons. A signal to noise of over 20:1 was obtained from the detector and significant charge collection efficiencies were measured at relatively modest voltages after a fluence of 4.3 × 1014 1 MeV neutron equivalents (neq) per cm². Studies using the Transient Current Technique probed the electric field within MCz test detectors and proved that MCz silicon does not type invert up until a radiation level of at least 5 × 1014 24 GeV/c p/cm². This would mean the VELO could possibly replace, in a potential upgrade, n+ -on-n DOFZ sensors and the complicated processing involved, for standard p+ -on-n processing with MCz.
