2. The Influence of the Coaches’ Demographics on Young Swimmers’ Performance and Technical Determinants

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between the coaches’ demographics (academic degree and/or coaching level and/or coaching experience) and young swimmers’ performance and technical ability. The sample was composed by 151 young swimmers (75 boys and 76 girls: 13.02 ± 1.19 years old, 49.97 ± 8.77 kg of body mass, 1.60 ± 0.08 m of height, 1.66 ± 0.09 m of arm span), from seven different clubs. Seven coaches (one per club) were responsible for the training monitoring. Performance and a set of biomechanical variables related to swim technique and efficiency were assessed. The swimmers’ performance was enhanced according to the increase in the coaches’ academic degree (1: 75.51 ± 10.02 s; 2: 74.55 ± 9.56 s; 3: 73.62 ± 7.64 s), coaching level (1: 76.79 ± 11.27 s; 2: 75.06 ± 9.31 s; 3: 73.65 ± 8.43 s), and training experience (≤5-y training experience: 75.44 ± 9.57 s; >5-y training experience: 74.60 ± 9.54 s). Hierarchical linear modeling retained all coaches’ demographics characteristics as main predictors (being the academic degree the highest: estimate = -1.51, 95% confidence interval = -0.94 to -2.08, p = 0.014). Hence, it seems that an increase in the demographics of the coaches appears to provide them with a training perspective more directed to the efficiency of swimming. 9. An updated checklist of myiasis-inducing Diptera species in livestock in Northeastern Brazil

Abstract

Apresentamos aqui uma lista atualizada, baseada em dados da literatura e em estudos de campo realizados de 2009 a 2013, relacionada à ocorrência de espécies de Diptera causadoras miíases na região Nordeste do Brasil, de acordo com o ambiente e o hospe- deiro no qual a espécie foi observada. A maioria dos casos de miíases envolveu ovelhas e não teve seu agente causal identificado. Dezenove espécies previamente conhecidas como agentes obrigatórios ou facultativos foram registrados em vários ambientes, incluindo a re- gião semi-árida, onde caprinos são frequentemente criados. Somente duas espécies foram identificadas como agentes causadores de miíases em animais domésticos, Cochliomyia hominivorax e Dermatobia hominis. A presença de espécies invasoras pode estar associada com a expansão local de miíases secundárias em animais domésticos., We present here an updated checklist, based upon data from the literature and from field surveys performed from 2009 to 2013, related to the occurrence of myiasis-inducing Diptera species in Northeastern Brazil, according to the environment and host on which the species was observed. Most cases of myiasis involved sheep and have not had their causal agent identified. Nineteen species previously known as obligatory or facultative agents were regis- tered in several environments, including the semi-arid region, where goats are often farmed. Only two species were actually identified as causal agents of myiasis on domestic animals, Cochliomyia hominivorax and Dermatobia hominis. The presence of invasive species may be associated with local expansion of secondary myiasis in domestic animals.

In the 226 stomachs of fish ranging between 100 and 311 cm lower jaw -fork length (LJFL), 44 items were identified, including 31 fishes and 13 cephalopods. Seventy stomachs were empty (23.6 %). M. nigricans fed preferentially on heavy and muscular scombrid fishes especially upon the skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus, 1758), probably to sustain their high metabolism, and on a variety of other items composed mainly by epipelagic species of fish and cephalopods. 20. Diversity and bioactive potential of endospore-forming bacteria cultured from the marine sponge Haliclona simulans.

Abstract

Aims: Despite the frequent isolation of endospore-formers from marine sponges, little is known about the diversity and characterization of individual isolates. The main aims of this study were to isolate and characterize the spore-forming bacteria from the marine sponge Haliclona simulans and to examine their potential as a source for bioactive compounds. Methods and Results: A bank of presumptive aerobic spore-forming bacteria was isolated from the marine sponge H. simulans. These represented c. 1% of the total culturable bacterial population. A subgroup of thirty isolates was characterized using morphological, phenotypical and phylogenetic analysis. A large diversity of endospore-forming bacteria was present, with the thirty isolates being distributed through a variety of Bacillus and Paenibacillus species. These included ubiquitous species, such as B. subtilis, B. pumilus, B. licheniformis and B. cereus group, as well as species that are typically associated with marine habitats, such as B. aquimaris, B. algicola and B. hwajinpoensis. Two strains carried the aiiA gene that encodes a lactonase known to be able to disrupt quorum-sensing mechanisms, and various isolates demonstrated protease activity and antimicrobial activity against different pathogenic indicator strains, including Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes. Conclusions: The marine sponge H. simulans harbours a diverse collection of endospore-forming bacteria, which produce proteases and antibiotics. This diversity appears to be overlooked by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods that do not specifically target sporeformers. Significance and Impact of Study: Marine sponges are an as yet largely untapped and poorly understood source of endospore-forming bacterial diversity with potential biotechnological, biopharmaceutical and probiotic applications. These results also indicate the importance of combining different methodologies for the comprehensive characterization of complex microbial populations such as those found in marine sponges. 21. Kinematical Characterisation of a Basic Head-out Aquatic Exercise during an Incremental Protocol.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between musical cadence and kinematical characteristics of a basic head-out aquatic exercise, when immersed to the breast. Six young women with at least one year of experience conducting head-out aquatic classes were videotaped in the sagital plane with a pair of cameras providing a dual projection from both above and underwater performing 5 incremental bouts (120 b.min-1, 135 b.min-1, 150 b.min-1, 165 b.min-1 and 180 b.min-1) of the basic head-out aquatic exercise "rocking horse". There was a decrease of the cycle period throughout the incremental protocol. Relationships between horizontal or vertical displacements with music cadence were not significant. On the other hand, increased cadence imposed increased segmental and centre of mass' velocities. As a conclusion expert and fit subjects seem to increase segmental velocity with increasing musical cadence to avoid the decrease of the segmental range of motion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of depth on drag during the underwater gliding. CFD simulations were applied to the flow around a 3D model of a male adult swimmer in a prone gliding position with the arms extended at the front. The domain to perform the simulations was created with 3.0 m depth, 3.0 m width and 11.0 m length. The drag coefficient and the hydrodynamic drag force were computed, using a steady flow velocity of 2.50 m/s for depths of 0.20, 0.50, 1.0, 1.50, 2.0, 2.50 and 2.80 m. As the depth increased, the drag coefficient and drag force decreased. The water depth seems to have a positive effect on reducing hydrodynamic drag during the gliding after starts and turns, although a compromise between decreasing drag (by increasing water depth) and gliding travel distance should be a main concern of swimmers.
