Abstract

To fabricate and use PDLC-based smart windows, electro-optical (EO) properties such as high transparency at low driving voltages, high contrast ratios (CR), and a wide viewing angle are critical. Thus, there is always a need to either develop new materials with excellent performance or to improve the existing ones. Doping materials (other than the LC and polymeric materials) such as dyes and nanomaterials, can also be used to adjust the EO properties. Sudan black B (SBB) dye and newly available LC material were doped in PDLC material in order to address such a scenario. In our investigation, we found that the doping SBB dye at a weight ratio of 1wt%and LC material with 60 wt% into NOA65 prepolymer PDLC resulted in a great performance of PDLC devices e.g. a high CR response (8.8) and high transmittance even at a low deriving voltage (5 Volt). Abstract

Polymer-surfactant mixed systems have attracted much attention due to their importance from the academic as well as applied point of view. Therefore, to evaluate the thermodynamic properties of polymer-surfactant self-assembled system, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB and CTAB/PEO mixture was determined at different CTAB/PEO ratios and various molecular masses of PEO by employing surface tensiometric, conductometric, and light scattering techniques. The CMC of CTAB was increased as the concentration and molecular mass of the polymer increased. Using surface tensiometry, the thermodynamics of adsorption, surface excess concentration and the minimum area occupied by surfactant molecules for different surfactant-polymer mixtures were also evaluated. CMC, area per molecule, free energy of micellization and degree of counter ion binding were also determined. It was found that most of these parameters increased as the concentration of polymer increased, whereas the surface excess concentration was found to decrease by increasing the polymer ration in the mixed system. The hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of the micelle particles calculated from dynamic light scattering technique showed a similar trend. Most of the results from different techniques support each others.

48. Heavy metal ions in milk samples collected from animals feed with city effluent irrigated fodder

Abstract

Untreated city effluent is used as source of irrigation in Faisalabad, Pakistan for raising different crops including fodder which is used for feeding the animals in the cattle’s farms. This paper reports a study to assess the risks and opportunities associated with this practice by determining heavy metals concentration in milk, which is used in daily life excessively. Heavy metals and other properties were measured in typical effluents, four soils and three fodder crops. It was found that the city effluent increased heavy metals concentrations in the soil and ultimately in fodder. Furthermore Heavy metals concentrations in the milk were found above those normally associated with suitability for human consumption. It is recommended that effluent should be treated before it’s used for raising different crops.
