Abstract

We experimentally probe the non-resonant feeding of photons into the optical mode of a two dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity from the discrete emission from a quantum dot. For a strongly coupled system of a single exciton and the cavity mode, we track the detuning-dependent photoluminescence intensity of the polariton peaks at different lattice temperatures. At low temperatures we observe a clear asymmetry in the emission intensity depending on whether the exciton is at higher or lower energy than the cavity mode. At high temperatures this asymmetry vanishes when the probabilities to emit or absorb a phonon become similar. For a different dot-cavity system where the cavity mode is detuned by \Delta E>5 meV to lower energy than the single exciton transitions emission from the mode remains correlated with the quantum dot as demonstrated unambiguously by cross-correlation photon counting experiments. By monitoring the temporal evolution of the photoluminescence spectrum, we show that feeding of photons into the mode occurs from multi-exciton transitions. We observe a clear anti-correlation of the mode and single exciton emission; the mode emission quenches as the population in the system reduces towards the single exciton level whilst the intensity of the mode emission tracks the multi-exciton transitions.

Abstract

We present an experimental and theoretical study of a system consisting of two spatially separated self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots strongly coupled to a single optical nanocavity mode. Due to their different size and compositional profiles, the two quantum dots exhibit markedly different DC Stark shifts. This allows us to tune them into mutual resonance with each other and a photonic crystal nanocavity mode as a bias voltage is varied. Photoluminescence measurements show a characteristic triple peak during the double anticrossing, which is a clear signature of a coherently coupled system of three quantum states. We fit the entire set of emission spectra of the coupled system to theory and are able to investigate the coupling between the two quantum dots via the cavity mode, and the coupling between the two quantum dots when they are detuned from the cavity mode. We suggest that the resulting quantum V-system may be advantageous since dephasing due to incoherent losses from the cavity mode can be avoided.

Abstract

We experimentally and theoretically investigate dephasing of zero dimensional microcavity polaritons in electrically tunable single dot photonic crystal nanocavities. Such devices allow us to alter the dot-cavity detuning in-situ and to directly probe the influence on the emission spectrum of varying the incoherent excitation level and the lattice temperature. By comparing our results with theory we obtain the polariton dephasing rate and clarify its dependence on optical excitation power and lattice temperature. For low excitation levels we observe a linear temperature dependence, indicative of phonon mediated polariton dephasing. At higher excitation levels, excitation induced dephasing is observed due to coupling to the solid-state environment. Abstract

We report the design, fabrication and optical investigation of electrically tunable single quantum dot - photonic crystal defect nanocavities operating in both the weak and strong coupling regimes of the light matter interaction. Unlike previous studies where the dot-cavity spectral detuning was varied by changing the lattice temperature, or by the adsorption of inert-gases at low temperatures, we demonstrate that the quantum confined Stark effect can be employed to quickly and reversibly switch the dot-cavity coupling simply by varying a gate voltage. Our results show that exciton transitions from individual dots can be tuned by ~4 meV relative to the nanocavity mode before the emission quenches due to carrier tunneling escape. This range is much larger than the typical linewidth of the high-Q cavity modes (~0.10 meV) allowing us to explore and contrast regimes where the dots couple to the cavity or decay by spontaneous emission into the 2D photonic bandgap. In the weak coupling regime, we show that the dot spontaneous emission rate can be tuned using a gate voltage, with Purcell factors >=7. New information is obtained on the nature of the dot-cavity coupling in the weak coupling regime and electrical control of zero dimensional polaritons is demonstrated for the highest-Q cavities (Q>=12000). Vacuum Rabi splittings up to ~0.13 meV are observed, much larger than the linewidths of either the decoupled exciton or cavity mode. These observations represent a voltage switchable optical non-linearity at the single photon level, paving the way towards on-chip dot based nano-photonic devices that can be integrated with passive optical components.

Photoluminescence and electroluminescence measurements are combined to probe the cavity mode structure and demonstrate a local electrical contact to the quantum dots. Measurements performed as a function of the electric field enable us to probe the capture, relaxation and recombination dynamics of photogenerated carriers inside the quantum dots emitting into a modified photonic environment. Furthermore, the two dimensional photonic crystal is probed by spatially dependent photocurrent spectroscopy indicating a 3.5x enhancement of the local radiative lifetime of the QDs inside the photonic crystal environment.

Abstract

We demonstrate the ability to control the spontaneous emission dynamics of self-assembled quantum dots via the local density of optical modes in 2D-photonic crystals. We show that an incomplete 2D photonic bandgap is sufficient to significantly lengthen the spontaneous emission lifetime ($>2\times$) over a wide bandwidth ($\Delta\lambda\geq40$ nm). For dots that are both \textit{spectrally} and \textit{spatially} coupled to strongly localized ($V_{mode}\sim1.5(\lambda/n)^{3}$), high $Q\sim2700$ optical modes, we have directly measured a strong Purcell enhanced shortening of the emission lifetime $\geq5.6\times$, limited only by our temporal resolution. Analysis of the spectral dependence of the recombination dynamics shows a maximum lifetime shortening of $19\pm4$. From the directly measured enhancement and suppression we show that the single mode coupling efficiency for quantum dots in such structures is at least $\beta=92%$ and is estimated to be as large as $\sim97%$., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The strong piezoelectric fields accompanying a surface acoustic wave on a semiconductor quantum well structure are employed to dissociate optically generated excitons and efficiently trap the created electron hole pairs in the moving lateral potential superlattice of the sound wave. The resulting spatial separation of the photogenerated ambipolar charges leads to an increase of the radiative lifetime by orders of magnitude as compared to the unperturbed excitons. Abstract

The acquisition of S-wave seismic data, separating SH (orthogonal to the seismic line) and SV (parallel to the seismic line) wavefields on the same seismic line, is not so frequent. However, this type of acquisition allows obtaining important information on the investigated area; in particular the anisotropy of the sediments, which can be detected from the differences between the corresponding two velocity fields. In this work, we analysed the SV- and SH-wave data in order to answer two questions: how can we estimate anisotropy from the comparison of the velocities of the SV and SH wavefields? What information can be obtained about the dip and strike angles of the anisotropic layers from this analysis? For this purpose, we used the travel time tomography to obtain the two velocity fields (VSV and VSH) and to exploit the computed ray paths from which we can know the directions of each ray segment crossing the model, associated with each VS component. We, then, used them, together with the with the VSV/VSH values obtained from the tomography, to estimate the anisotropy and the orientation of the anisotropic layer, defined by the slope (dip) and the azimuth angle (strike). Furthermore, we tried to define a possible relationship between the VSV and VSH components with the anisotropy parameters, the direction of the rays and the geometry of the anisotropic layer. Contains fulltext : 231585.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), The purpose of the present note is to draw attention to the potential role of a recently discovered visual illusion in creating traffic accidents. The illusion consists in a compelling and immediate experience that the space behind an occluding object in the foreground is empty. Although the illusion refers to a region of space, which is invisible due to occlusion (a blind spot), there is evidence to suggest that it is nevertheless driven by visual mechanisms and that it can be just as deceptive and powerful as ordinary visual illusions. We suggest that this novel illusion can make situations involving blind spots in a road user's field of view even more dangerous than one would expect based on the lack of visibility by itself. This could be because it erroneously makes the road user feel that (s)he has actually seen everything there is to see, and thus has verified that the blind spot is empty. This hypothesis requires further testing before definitive conclusions can be drawn, but we wish to make researchers and authorities involved in the analysis of traffic accidents and on-the-spot crash investigations aware of its potential role in order to encourage registration of relevant data and facilitate further research.
