A phenomenological theory of the fluctuations of velocity occurring in a fully developed homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow is presented. The focus is made on the fluctuations of the spatial (Eulerian) and temporal (Lagrangian) velocity increments. The universal nature of the intermittency phenomenon as observed in experimental measurements and numerical simulations is shown to be fully taken into account by the multiscale picture proposed by the multifractal formalism, and its extensions to the dissipative scales and to the Lagrangian framework. The article is devoted to the presentation of these arguments and to their comparisons against empirical data. In particular, explicit predictions of the statistics, such as probability density functions and high order moments, of the velocity gradients and acceleration are derived. In the Eulerian framework, at a given Reynolds number, they are shown to depend on a single parameter function called the singularity spectrum and to a universal constant governing the transition between the inertial and dissipative ranges. The Lagrangian singularity spectrum compares well with its Eulerian counterpart by a transformation based on incompressibility, homogeneity and isotropy and the remaining constant is shown to be difficult to estimate on empirical data. It is finally underlined the limitations of the increment to quantify accurately the singular nature of Lagrangian velocity. The multifractal nature of solar photospheric magnetic structures are studied using the 2D wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) method. This relies on computing partition functions from the wavelet transform skeleton defined by the WTMM method. This skeleton provides an adaptive space-scale partition of the fractal distribution under study, from which one can extract the multifractal singularity spectrum. We describe the implementation of a multiscale image processing segmentation procedure based on the partitioning of the WT skeleton which allows the disentangling of the information concerning the multifractal properties of active regions from the surrounding quiet-Sun field. The quiet Sun exhibits a average H\"older exponent $\sim -0.75$, with observed multifractal properties due to the supergranular structure. On the other hand, active region multifractal spectra exhibit an average H\"older exponent $\sim 0.38$ similar to those found when studying experimental data from turbulent flows., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We propose and test a wavelet transform modulus maxima method for the au- tomated detection and extraction of coronal loops in extreme ultraviolet images of the solar corona. This method decomposes an image into a number of size scales and tracks enhanced power along each ridge corresponding to a coronal loop at each scale. We compare the results across scales and suggest the optimum set of parameters to maximise completeness while minimising detection of noise. For a test coronal image, we compare the global statistics (e.g., number of loops at each length) to previous automated coronal-loop detection algorithms.

We study the influence of a structural disorder on the thermodynamical properties of 2D-elastic chains submitted to mechanical/topological constraint as loops. The disorder is introduced via a spontaneous curvature whose distribution along the chain presents either no correlation or long-range correlations (LRC). The equilibrium properties of the one-loop system are derived numerically and analytically for weak disorder. LRC are shown to favor the formation of small loop, larger the LRC, smaller the loop size. We use the mean first passage time formalism to show that the typical short time loop dynamics is superdiffusive in the presence of LRC. Potential biological implications on nucleosome positioning and dynamics in eukaryotic chromatin are discussed.

We explore the large-scale behavior of nucleotide compositional strand asymmetries along human chromosomes. As we observe for 7 of 9 origins of replication experimentally identified so far, the (TA+GC) skew displays rather sharp upward jumps, with a linear decreasing profile in between two successive jumps. We present a model of replication with well positioned replication origins and random terminations that accounts for the observed characteristic serrated skew profiles. We succeed in identifying 287 pairs of putative adjacent replication origins with an origin spacing approximately 1-2 Mbp that are likely to correspond to replication foci observed in interphase nuclei and recognized as stable structures that persist throughout subsequent cell generations.

This study proposes a novel framework based on magnitude cumulant and surrogate analyses to reliably detect and estimate the intermittency coefficient from short-length coarse-resolution turbulent time series. Intermittency coefficients estimated from a large number of neutrally stratified atmospheric surface layer turbulent series from various field campaigns are shown to remarkably concur with well-known laboratory experimental results. In addition, surrogate-based hypothesis testing significantly reduces the likelihood of detecting a spurious non-zero intermittency coefficient from non-intermittent series. The discriminatory power of the proposed framework is promising for addressing the unresolved question of how atmospheric stability affects the intermittency properties of boundary layer turbulence.

We use singular value decomposition techniques to generalize the wavelet transform modulus maxima method to the multifractal analysis of vector-valued random fields. The method is calibrated on synthetic multifractal 2D vector measures and monofractal 3D fractional Brownian vector fields. We report the results of some application to the velocity and vorticity fields issued from 3D isotropic turbulence simulations. This study reveals the existence of an intimate relationship between the singularity spectra of these two vector fields which are found significantly more intermittent than previously estimated from longitudinal and transverse velocity increment statistics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

We generalize the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) method to multifractal analysis of 3D random fields. This method is calibrated on synthetic 3D monofractal fractional Brownian fields and on 3D multifractal singular cascade measures as well as their random function counterpart obtained by fractional integration. Then we apply the 3D WTMM method to the dissipation field issue from 3D isotropic turbulence simulations. Recently, Ghashghaie et al. have shown that some statistical aspects of fully developed turbulence and exchange rate fluctuations exhibit striking similarities (Nature 381, 767 (1996)). The authors then suggested that the two problems might be deeply connected, and speculated on the existence of an `information cascade' which would play the role in finance of the well known Kolmogorov energy cascade in turbulence.
