Photoelastic modulators are optical devices with a broad range of applications. These devices typically utilize a transverse interaction mechanism between acoustic and optical waves, resulting in a fundamental trade-off between the input aperture and the modulation frequency. Commercially available modulators with centimeter square apertures have operating frequencies in the vicinity of 50 kHz. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a birefringence-free photoelastic modulator operating at approximately 2.7 MHz with a centimeter square aperture, increasing the operating frequency substantially compared to existing approaches. Using the modulator and polarizers, we demonstrate close to $\pi$ radians polarization modulation amplitude with sub-watt drive power, translating to nearly 100% intensity modulation efficiency at the fundamental (2.7 MHz) and second harmonic (5.4 MHz) frequencies., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

This paper introduces the first theoretical framework for quantifying the efficiency and performance gain opportunity size of adaptive inference algorithms. We provide new approximate and exact bounds for the achievable efficiency and performance gains, supported by empirical evidence demonstrating the potential for 10-100x efficiency improvements in both Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing tasks without incurring any performance penalties. Additionally, we offer insights on improving achievable efficiency gains through the optimal selection and design of adaptive inference state spaces.

As Moore's Law loses momentum, improving size, performance, and efficiency of processors has become increasingly challenging, ending the era of predictable improvements in hardware performance. Meanwhile, the widespread incorporation of high-definition sensors in consumer devices and autonomous technologies has fueled a significant upsurge in sensory data. Current global trends reveal that the volume of generated data already exceeds human consumption capacity, making AI algorithms the primary consumers of data worldwide. To address this, a novel approach to designing AI-centric sensing systems is needed that can bridge the gap between the increasing capabilities of high-definition sensors and the limitations of AI processors. This paper provides an overview of efficient sensing and perception methods in both AI and sensing domains, emphasizing the necessity of co-designing AI algorithms and sensing systems for dynamic perception. The proposed approach involves a framework for designing and analyzing dynamic AI-in-the-loop sensing systems, suggesting a fundamentally new method for designing adaptive sensing systems through inference-time AI-to-sensor feedback and end-to-end efficiency and performance optimization.

Polarization modulators have a broad range of applications in optics. The acceptance angle of a free-space polarization modulator is crucial for many applications. Polarization modulators that can achieve a wide acceptance angle are constructed by attaching a piezoelectric transducer to an isotropic material, and utilize a resonant transverse interaction between light and acoustic waves. Since their demonstration in the 1960s, the design of these modulators has essentially remained the same with minor improvements in the following decades. In this work, we show that a suitable single crystal with the correct crystal orientation, functioning as both the piezoelectric transducer and the acousto-optic interaction medium, could be used for constructing a highly efficient free-space resonant polarization modulator operating at megahertz frequencies and exhibiting a wide acceptance angle. We construct the modulator using gallium arsenide, an optically isotropic and piezoelectric crystal, and demonstrate polarization modulation at 6 MHz with an input aperture of 1 cm in diameter, acceptance angle reaching $\pm30^\circ$, and modulation efficiency exceeding 50%. Compared to state-of-the-art resonant photoelastic modulators, the modulator reported in this work exhibits greater than 50 fold improvement in modulation frequency for the same input aperture, while simultaneously reducing the thickness by approximately a factor of 80. Increasing the modulation frequency of photoelastic modulators from the kilohertz to the megahertz regime and substantially reducing their thickness lead to significant performance improvements for various use cases. The capability to modulate the intensity of an optical beam has scientific and practical significance. In this work, we demonstrate Y-Z cut lithium niobate acousto-optic modulators with record-high modulation efficiency, requiring only $1.5~\text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ for 100% modulation at 7 MHz. These modulators use a simple fabrication process; coating the top and bottom surfaces of a thin lithium niobate wafer with transparent electrodes. The fundamental shear acoustic mode of the wafer is excited through the transparent electrodes by applying voltage with frequency corresponding to the resonant frequency of this mode, confining an acoustic standing wave to the electrode region. Polarization of light propagating through this region is modulated at the applied frequency. Polarization modulation is converted to intensity modulation by placing the modulator between polarizers. Intensity modulators are an essential component in optics for controlling free-space beams. Many applications require the intensity of a free-space beam to be modulated at a single frequency, including wide-field lock-in detection for sensitive measurements, mode-locking in lasers, and phase-shift time-of-flight imaging (LiDAR). Here, we report a new type of single frequency intensity modulator that we refer to as a longitudinal piezoelectric resonant photoelastic modulator. The modulator consists of a thin lithium niobate wafer coated with transparent surface electrodes. One of the fundamental acoustic modes of the modulator is excited through the surface electrodes, confining an acoustic standing wave to the electrode region. The modulator is placed between optical polarizers; light propagating through the modulator and polarizers is intensity modulated with a wide acceptance angle and record breaking modulation efficiency in the megahertz frequency regime. As an illustration of the potential of our approach, we show that the proposed modulator can be integrated with a standard image sensor to effectively convert it into a time-of-flight imaging system., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures

In this paper, we present the design and the analysis of an electrochemical circuit for measuring the concentrations of therapeutic drugs using structure-switching aptamers. Aptamers are single-stranded nucleic acids, whose sequence is selected to exhibit high affinity and specificity toward a molecular target, and change its conformation upon binding. This property, when coupled with a redox reporter and electrochemical detection, enables reagent-free biosensing with a sub-minute temporal resolution for in vivo therapeutic drug monitoring. Specifically, we design a chronoamperometry-based electrochemical circuit that measures the direct changes in the electron transfer (ET) kinetics of a methylene blue reporter conjugated at the distal-end of the aptamer. To overcome the high-frequency noise amplification issue when interfacing with a large-size (> 0.25 mm2) implantable electrode, we present a sample-and-hold (S/H) circuit technique in which the desired electrode potentials are held onto noiseless capacitors during the recording of the redox currents. This allows disconnecting the feedback amplifiers to avoid its noise injection while reducing the total power consumption. A prototype circuit implemented in 65-nm CMOS demonstrates a cell-capacitance-insensitive input-referred noise (IRN) current of 15.2 pArms at a 2.5-kHz filtering bandwidth. Tested in human whole blood samples, changes in the ET kinetics from the redox-labeled aminoglycoside aptamers at different kanamycin concentrations are measured from the recorded current waveforms. We investigate synthesis of a large effective aperture using a sparse array of subarrays. We employ a multi-objective optimization framework for placement of subarrays within a prescribed area dictated by form factor constraints, trading off the smaller beam width obtained by spacing out the subarrays against the grating and side lobes created by sparse placement. We assess the performance of our designs for the fundamental problem of bearing estimation for one or more sources, comparing performance against estimation-theoretic bounds. Our tiled architecture is motivated by recent progress in low-cost hardware realizations of moderately sized antenna arrays (which play the role of subarrays) in the millimeter wave band, and our numerical examples are based on 16-element (4x4) subarrays in the 60 GHz unlicensed band., Comment: submitted for publication

A perturbed gut microbiome has recently been linked with multiple disease processes, yet researchers currently lack tools that can provide in vivo, quantitative, and real-time insight into these processes and associated host-microbe interactions. We propose an in vivo wireless implant for monitoring gastrointestinal tract redox states using oxidation-reduction potentials (ORP). The implant is powered and conveniently interrogated via ultrasonic waves. We engineer the sensor electronics, electrodes, and encapsulation materials for robustness in vivo, and integrate them into an implant that endures autoclave sterilization and measures ORP for 12 days implanted in the cecum of a live rat. The presented implant platform paves the way for long-term experimental testing of biological hypotheses, offering new opportunities for understanding gut redox pathophysiology mechanisms, and facilitating translation to disease diagnosis and treatment applications., Comment: Minor revision. A time-of-flight (ToF) imaging system is proposed and its working principle demonstrated. To realize this system, a new device, a free-space optical mixer, is designed and fabricated. A scene is illuminated (flashed) with a megahertz level amplitude modulated light source and the reflected light from the scene is collected by a receiver. The receiver consists of the free-space optical mixer, comprising a photoelastic modulator sandwiched between polarizers, placed in front of a standard CMOS image sensor. This free-space optical mixer downconverts the megahertz level amplitude modulation frequencies into the temporal bandwidth of the image sensor. A full scale extension of the demonstrated system will be able to measure phases and Doppler shifts for the beat tones and use signal processing techniques to estimate the distance and velocity of each point in the illuminated scene with high accuracy., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

We consider a communication channel where there is no common clock between the transmitter and the receiver. This is motivated by the recent interest in building system-on-chip radios for Internet of Things applications, which cannot rely on crystal oscillators for accurate timing. We identify two types of clock uncertainty in such systems: timing jitter, which occurs at a time scale faster than the communication duration (or equivalently blocklength); and clock drift, which occurs at a slower time scale. We study the zero-error capacity under both types of timing imperfections, and obtain optimal zero-error codes for some cases. Our results show that, as opposed to common practice, in the presence of clock drift it is highly suboptimal to try to learn and track the clock frequency at the receiver; rather, one can design codes that come close to the performance of perfectly synchronous communication systems without any clock synchronization at the receiver., Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Communications

In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework for analyzing the measurable information content of an unknown scene through an active electromagnetic imaging array. We consider monostatic and multistatic array architectures in a one-dimensional setting. Our main results include the following: (a) we introduce the space-bandwidth product (SBP), and show that, under the Born approximation, it provides an accurate prediction of the number of the degrees of freedom (DoF) as constrained by the geometry of the scene and the imaging system; (b) we show that both monostatic and multistatic architectures have the same number of DoF; (c) we show that prior DoF analysis based on the more restrictive Fresnel approximation are obtained by specializing our results; (d) we investigate matched-filter (back-propagation) and pseudoinverse image reconstruction schemes, and analyze the achievable resolution through these methods. Our analytical framework opens up new avenues to investigate image formation techniques that aim to reconstruct the reflectivity function of the scene by solving an inverse scattering problem, and provides insights on achievable resolution. We propose the use of a combination of ultrasonic and magnetic fields in conductive media for the creation of RF electrical current via the Lorentz force, in order to achieve current generation with extreme sub-wavelength resolution at large depth. We demonstrate the modeling, generation, and measurement of Lorentz current in conductive solution, and show that this current can be localized at a distance of 13 $cm$ from the ultrasonic source to a region about three orders of magnitude smaller than the corresponding wavelength of electromagnetic waves at the same operation frequency. Our results exhibit greater depth, tighter localization, and closer agreement with prediction than previous work on the measurement of Lorentz current in a solution of homogeneous conductivity. The proposed method of RF current excitation overcomes the trade-off between focusing and propagation that is fundamental in the use of RF electromagnetic excitation alone, and has the potential to improve localization and depth of operation for RF current-based biomedical applications., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures; submitted to Applied Physics Letters

We propose and demonstrate an ultrasonic communication link using spatial degrees of freedom to increase data rates for deeply implantable medical devices. Low attenuation and millimeter wavelengths make ultrasound an ideal communication medium for miniaturized low-power implants. While small spectral bandwidth has drastically limited achievable data rates in conventional ultrasonic implants, large spatial bandwidth can be exploited by using multiple transducers in a multiple-input/multiple-output system to provide spatial multiplexing gain without additional power, larger bandwidth, or complicated packaging. We experimentally verify the communication link in mineral oil with a transmitter and receiver 5 cm apart, each housing two custom-designed mm-sized piezoelectric transducers operating at the same frequency. Two streams of data modulated with quadrature phase-shift keying at 125 kbps are simultaneously transmitted and received on both channels, effectively doubling the data rate to 250 kbps with a measured bit error rate below 1e-4. We also evaluate the performance and robustness of the channel separation network by testing the communication link after introducing position offsets. These results demonstrate the potential of spatial multiplexing to enable more complex implant applications requiring higher data rates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
