Recent studies have reported that methylmercury (MeHg) induces neuronal apoptosis, which is accompanied by abnormal neurological development. Despite the important role of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in maintaining the structure and function of the brain, as well as improving neuronal apoptosis induced by MeHg, the exact mechanism remains unknown. The present study hypothesized that the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated JNK signaling pathway may be associated with the protective effect of DHA against MeHg-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. Cell Counting Kit-8, TUNEL staining, flow cytometry, ROS detection, PCR and western blot analysis were performed. The results demonstrated that MeHg inhibited the activity of PC12 cells, causing oxidative damage and promoting apoptosis; however, DHA significantly attenuated this effect. Mechanistic studies revealed that MeHg increased intracellular ROS levels and JNK protein phosphorylation, and decreased the expression levels of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, whereas DHA reduced ROS levels and JNK phosphorylation, and increased Bcl-2 expression. In addition, the ROS inhibitor N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) was used to verify the experimental results. After pretreatment with NAC, expression levels of Bcl-2, Bax, phosphorylated-JNK and JNK were assessed. Bcl-2 protein expression was increased and the Bcl-2/Bax ratio was increased. Moreover, the high expression levels of phosphorylated-JNK induced by MeHg were significantly decreased. Based on the aforementioned results, the present study indicated that the effects of DHA against MeHg-induced PC12 cell apoptosis may be mediated via the ROS/JNK signaling pathway.

To investigate prenatal exposure to arsenic and its effect on birth size, we conducted a cross-sectional study in Wujiang City, Jiangsu, China, from June 2009 to June 2010. A total of 1722 mother-infant pairs were included in the study. A questionnaire was administered to the pregnant women and umbilical cord blood(UCB) samples were collected. Arsenic concentration in UCB was detected by inductively coupled plasma emission mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The birth size included birth weight, birth body length and head circumference of the newborns. The effects of arsenic exposure on birth size were assessed by multiple linear regression analysis. Arsenic concentrations in UCB ranged from 0.11 to 30.36 μg/L, the median was 1.71 μg/L. In this range of exposure, arsenic concentration was significantly negatively associated with birth weight, especially among male infants. Our results showed that prenatal exposure to arsenic level was low in Wujiang City, China. However, low prenatal arsenic exposure could have negative effects on birth weight. Our research provided evidence for the adverse effects of prenatal low-level arsenic exposure on the intrauterine growth of the fetus.

As common environmental pollutants, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are widely applied in industry and agriculture have adverse effects on neurodevelopment. However, evidence on the neurotoxicity of POPs in neural development of offspring is limited. This study explored the relationship between prenatal exposure to POPs and neurodevelopment of 18-month-old toddlers in a mother-child cohort in Shanghai, China. In this study, we determined exposure levels of 37 POPs in cord blood serum collected at the time of delivery. The detection rate of pollutants HCB, β-HCH, and p,p′-DDE was higher than 60%, so these will be discussed in the following analysis. From birth to approximately 18 months, we followed up infants to longitudinally explore whether POPs influenced their language, motor, and cognitive development according to a Bayley-Ⅲ assessment . Based on multivariable regression analyses, the β-HCH concentration in cord serum was negatively related to motor development scores in children at 18 months by adjusting for the covariates, but there was no change in language and cognition. Further piecewise linear regression analysis showed that a cord serum β-HCH concentration greater than 0.2 μg/L had a significantly negative correlation with the motor development scores. p,p′-DDE was positively associated with language development at 18 months before and after adjusting for covariates. But prenatal HCB levels were not associated with any of the Bayley-Ⅲ subscales at 18 months. We concluded that prenatal exposure to β-HCH might have adverse effects on infants’ motor development. The minimum harmful concentration of β-HCH was estimated at 0.2 μg/L in cord serum. The unexpected positive association between p,p′-DDT and language development could be due to live birth bias.

The intensity and form of changes in closed lakes, upstream lakes and outflow lakes on the Third Pole (TP) differ based on their drainage mode. Researchers’ insufficient understanding of the hydrological networks associated with lakes hampers studies of the relationship between lakes and climate. In this study, we establish a comprehensive hydrological network for each lake (>1 km2) on the TP using 106 Landsat images, 236 Chinese topographic maps, and SRTM DEM. Three-hundred-ninety-seven closed lakes, 488 upstream lakes and 317 outflow lakes totaling 3,5498.49 km2, 7,378.82 km2, and 3,382.29 km2, respectively, were identified on the TP using 2010 data. Two-hundred-thirty-four closed lakes were found to not be linked to upstream lakes. The remaining 163 closed lakes were connected to and fed by the 488 upstream lakes. The object-oriented analyses within this study indicated that more rapid changes occurred in the surface extent of closed lakes than in upstream lakes or outflow lakes on the TP from 1970 s to 2010. Furthermore, the water volume of the examined closed lakes was almost nine times greater than that of the upstream lakes from 2003 to 2009. All the examined closed lakes exhibited an obvious water volume change compared to the corresponding upstream lakes in the same basin. Furthermore, two case studies illustrate that the annual and seasonal dynamics associated with the changes in closed lakes may reflect climate change patterns, while the upstream lake dynamics may be more controlled by the lakeshore terrain and drainage characteristics. The lake inventory and hydrological network catalogued in this study provide a basis for developing a better understanding of lake response to climate change on the TP.

Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) have recently become one of the primary natural hazards in the Himalayas. There is therefore an urgent need to assess GLOF hazards in the region. Cirenmaco, a moraine-dammed lake located in the upstream portion of Zhangzangbo valley, Central Himalayas, has received public attention after its damaging 1981 outburst flood. Here, by combining remote sensing methods, bathymetric survey and 2D hydraulic modeling, we assessed the hazard posed by Cirenmaco in its current status. Inter-annual variation of Cirenmaco lake area indicates a rapid lake expansion from 0.10 ± 0.08 km2 in 1988 to 0.39 ± 0.04 km2 in 2013. Bathymetric survey shows the maximum water depth of the lake in 2012 was 115 ± 2 m and the lake volume was calculated to be 1.8 × 107 m3. Field geomorphic analysis shows that Cirenmaco glacial lake is prone to GLOFs as mass movements and ice and snow avalanches can impact the lake and the melting of the dead ice in the moraine can lower the dam level. HEC-RAS 2D model was then used to simulate moraine dam failure of the Cirenmaco and assess GLOF impacts downstream. Reconstruction of Cirenmaco 1981 GLOF shows that HEC-RAS can produce reasonable flood extent and water depth, thus demonstrate its ability to effectively model complex GLOFs. GLOF modeling results presented can be used as a basis for the implementation of disaster prevention and mitigation measures. As a case study, this work shows how we can integrate different methods to GLOF hazard assessment.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), known as common environmental pollutants, which have adverse effects on neurobehavioral development, are widely applied in industry and agriculture. However, evidence about neurodevelopmental toxicity of POPs in humans is limited. This study aimed to explore the relationship between prenatal exposure to POPs and birth outcome of the newborn including birth length, weight, and head circumference. In this study, 1522 mother-child pairs were included in this study and cord blood samples were collected, which were detected to determine exposure level of 37 POPs in total. After delivery, the neonatal anthropometric indices detection (birth length, weight, and head circumference) was performed. According to the multivariate linear regression, the newborn with high detection rates (≥75 percentile) of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH), p,p’-dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (p,p’-DDE) in the umbilical cord blood were demonstrated negative relationship with birth head circumference after adjusting for confounding factors, but not related with birth length and weight. After confirming that there was a nonlinear relationship between HCB and birth head circumference based on sex stratification through the generalized additive model (GAM), further two-piecewise linear regression model was conducted to explore the saturation threshold effect between HCB and birth head circumference, which showed cord serum HCB concentration greater than 0.5 μg/L was negatively associated with birth head circumference in girls. Our study provided evidence for the adverse influence of HCB, β-HCH and p,p'-DDE exposure during pregnancy on the birth head circumference of offspring. Although HCB induced reduction of birth head circumference was found in girls, the mechanism of gender difference remained unclear. Further studies are needed to explore the effect of POPs on the growth and development of offspring based on in vivo or in vitro experimental models.

As a rare systemic autoinflammatory disease, adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) has heterogeneous clinical manifestations, response to treatment and outcome. This study tried to assess the clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, and treatments of Chinese AOSD patients, and make a retrospective analysis.We collected from 7 hospitals in China a total of 517 Chinese patients with AOSD who satisfied the Yamaguchi criteria. We retrospectively evaluated their clinical features, laboratory tests, treatments and compared them with published data from different studies. All the data in this study were from medical records and further statistic analyses.We evaluated a total of 517 AOSD patients, 72% female, average age of onset was 37.7; spiking fever, rash and arthralgia occurred in 472 (91.3%), 413 (79.9%), 378 (73.1%) cases, respectively. There were 439/513 (85.6%) cases with leukocytosis and 456/476 (95.8%) cases with raised serum ferritin. The highest frequently used medications and regimens for remission were glucocorticoids (498/517, 96.3%), methotrexate (273/517, 52.8%) and hydroxychloroquine (174/517, 33.7%). 84.4%. 357/423 of AOSD cases were able to achieve initial remission with different regimens, mostly including glucocorticoids, methotrexate or hydroxychloroquine. 47.2% of them (244/517) received 30D≤60 mg/d of prednisone to reach final clinical remission. Further analysis indicated that risk factors, such as skin rash, pericarditis, splenomegaly and delayed diagnosis, are highly related to the dosage of prednisone for remission.Glucocorticoids are mostly selected to induce remission in China and half of them required ~0.5-1mg/kgbw prednisone. In patients with skin rash, pericarditis, splenomegaly or delayed diagnosis, a higher dosage of prednisone was needed to obtain remission.

Albedo, which impacts the surface heat budget of a glacier, is a dominant factor governing snow and ice melt variability. We analyzed variations in albedo on the Dongkemadi Glacier (92°4.94′E, 33°05.88′N) using MODIS daily snow albedo products. The results show that the summer albedo over the accumulation zone and the ablation zone all presented a decreasing trend from 2002 to 2012, and both precipitation and summer temperature were critical factors that impacted variations in the albedo of the glacier. We linked the albedo variation with the measured mass balance of the glacier and found that 2006 and 2010 were high-melt years at the Dongkemadi Glacier, with lower albedo and a more negative mass balance. The area around the equilibrium line altitude (ELA) on the glacier was very sensitive to albedo feedback. Glacial lake outburst floods are among the most serious natural hazards in the Himalayas. Such floods are of high scientific and political importance because they exert trans-boundary impacts on bordering countries. The preparation of an updated inventory of glacial lakes and the analysis of their evolution are an important first step in assessment of hazards from glacial lake outbursts. Here, we report the spatiotemporal developments of the glacial lakes in the Poiqu River basin, a trans-boundary basin in the Central Himalayas, from 1976 to 2010 based on multi-temporal Landsat images. Studied glacial lakes are classified as glacier-fed lakes and non-glacier-fed lakes according to their hydrologic connection to glacial watersheds. A total of 119 glacial lakes larger than 0.01km(2) with an overall surface area of 20.22km(2) (+/- 10.8%) were mapped in 2010, with glacier-fed lakes being predominant in both number (69, 58.0%) and area (16.22km(2), 80.2%). We found that lakes connected to glacial watersheds (glacier-fed lakes) significantly expanded (122.1%) from 1976 to 2010, whereas lakes not connected to glacial watersheds (non-glacier-fed lakes) remained stable (+2.8%) during the same period. This contrast can be attributed to the impact of glaciers. Retreating glaciers not only supply meltwater to lakes but also leave space for them to expand. Compared with other regions of the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH), the lake area per glacier area in the Poiqu River basin was the highest. This observation might be attributed to the different climate regimes and glacier status along the HKH. Glacial melting in the Tibetan Plateau affects the water resources of millions of people. This study finds that—partly owing to changes in atmospheric circulations and precipitation patterns—the most intensive glacier shrinkage is in the Himalayan region, whereas glacial retreat in the Pamir Plateau region is less apparent.

Glacial retreat on the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions is characteristic since the 1960s and has intensified in the past 10 yr. The magnitude of glacial retreat is relatively small in the interior of the Tibetan Plateau and increases to the margins of the plateau, with the greatest retreat around the edges. Glacial retreat in this region is impacting the hydrological processes in the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions. The glacial retreat has caused an increase of more than 5.5% in river runoff from the plateau. In some areas, such as the Tarim River basin, the increase in river runoff is greater. Glacial retreat has also caused rising lake levels in the areas with large coverage of glaciers, such as the Nam Co Lake and Selin Co Lake areas. Rising lake levels are devastating grasslands and villages near the lakes.

Glaciers in the Muztag Ata and Konggur mountains of the eastern Pamir plateau, northwestern China, have been monitored by applying aerial photo stereo models (1962/66) and Landsat TM (1990) and ETM+ (1999) images, all of which have been compared in order to detect areal and frontal changes through the past four decades. The mean frontal retreat of glaciers in the Muztag Ata and Konggur mountains increased from 6.0 ma−1 between 1962/66 and 1990 to 11.2ma−1 between 1990 and 1999, with an overall glacier length reduction of 9.9% for the whole study period. The glacier area has decreased by 7.9%, mainly due to changes observed in the most recent period (1990–99), when the annual area loss almost tripled to 1.01 km2 a−1. Based on meteorological data from Taxkogan station since 1957, we conclude that climate change, particularly the rise in summer temperature after 1994, is the main forcing factor in glacier shrinkage.

Desertification in Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau is part of Chinese desertification. In the past decades, due to the climate warming, the climate condition in Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau has been relatively dry. This has resulted in permafrost degradation and other environmental problems. In addition, the vegetation and the soil layer were also destroyed by unreasonable economic activities. Cultivated and grassland lands have become deserted. Nowadays, the desertification is still expending. In this paper, the factors affecting the desertification in Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau were examined, and the desertification as well as its relationship with permafrost degradation was also discussed.

temperature Abstract. Recent studies have detected the amplitude of spring plant phenology in whole Tibet Plateau and growing season by remote sensing technology. However, few studies have examined that how the plant phenology has changed in the past decade. At the regional scale, we investigated the phenological variations in five regions (Dingri, Gaize, Pula, Yangtze River and Yellow River source areas) in the hinterland of the Tibetan Plateau from 2001 to 2010 using remote sensing technology. To analyze differentiation of vegetation phenology, we characterize the green up variation along a gradient from outer edge to inland horizontal zonation on the Tibetan Plateau using remote sensing technology. To examine phenological inter-annual variation, we found that a significant lengthening of vegetation growing season has been occurring in most study regions, marked by an earlier beginning. Taking 31°N as the boundary, the beginning of the growing season (BGS) for alpine vegetation in Dingri area in the southern Tibetan Plateau delayed of 11.6 days from 2001 to 2010, however it shows an obvious advance trend in northern area of the Tibetan Plateau. Interestingly, the advance days of BGS is increasing from 5.1 days/decade to 13.1 days/decade in northern Tibet Plateau during the last decade. The inter-annual variation of the end of the growing season for alpine vegetation was not obvious, and most of the study regions had natural inter-annual fluctuations. Analysis of the meteorological records in the study areas shows that spring temperature rising appears to be a critical factor contributing to the earlier green up and prolonged growing season in the northern TP; nevertheless, spring precipitation plays a more important role than spring temperature in Dingri region in the southern Tibetan Plateau.

Mountain glaciers contribute water resource, but produce glacier hazards. This paper presents glacier change in Xiate ancient road and analyses glacier hazards to planning highway. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (TM/ETM+) images and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM), we obtain glacier boundary, then calculating glacier area. At last, we get some conclusions. (1) Change rate of glacier area in Xiate River is larger than Muzhaerte River, glacier area change in Xiate River is −0.59km2/a and glacier area change in Muzhaerte River is −5.12km2/a, which is associated with climate of two basins; (2) The area and length of glaciers which are 5km away from planning highway are decreased. In the two rivers, change of glacier area is similar, but change of glacier length is very different; (3) some glaciers may be hazardous to the planning highway, such as muzhaerte glacier and tamugetashi glacier.

It is significant to know the trend of glacier and lake change before build a new highway under global warming background. Area changes in mountain glaciers and lakes along Wusun road in Chinese Tien Shan over the past four decades are examined, based on Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), topographical maps and China Glacier Inventory data using Geographical Information System(GIS) and remote-sensing. This study shows that the glaciers in the study area have undergone recession during 1973–2007. Over the past 34 years the total glacier area decreased from 177.53 km2 to 130.75 km2. The area of glaciers away from planning highway 5 kilometers had decreased about 7.78% with the retreat rate 0.115 km2/a between 1973 and 1990; from 1990 to 2007 the area had decreased 19.91%, and the retreat rate was 0.24 km2/a. Akekule is the best great lake with 2.46 km2 in 1990 in this region and its area increased about 0.48% and 0.75% with expanding rate 0.012 km2/a and 0.019 km2/a for the period of 1990–2000 and 2000–2010, respectively. Lakes accelerated expansion may mainly affected by the glacier recession and increasing ice melting water. Some glaciers may be hazardous to the planning highway.

A major monitoring area, a part of the middle reaches of Heihe basin, was selected. The Landsat TM data in summer of 1990 and 2000 were used with interpretation on the computer screen, classification and setting up environmental investigation database (1:100000) combined with DEM, land cover/land use, land type data and etc., according to the environmental classification system. Then towards to the main problems of environment, the spatial statistical analysis and dynamic comparisons were carried out using the database. The dynamic monitoring results of 1999 and 2000 show that the changing percentage with the area of 6 ground objects are as follows: land use and agriculture land use increased by 34.17% and 19.47% respectively, wet land and water-body also increased by 6.29% and 8.03% respectively; unused land increased by 1.73% and the biggest change is natural/semi-natural vegetation area, decreased by 42.78%, the main results above meat with the requirements of precise and practical conditions by the precise exam and spot check. With the combinations of using TM remote sensing data and rich un-remote sensing data, the investigations of ecology and environment and the dynamic monitoring would be carried out efficiently in the arid area. It is a dangerous signal of large area desertification if the area of natural/semi-natural vegetation is reduced continuously and obviously.
