- Abstract
The solvent dependent excited state dynamics of 4-hydroxy-3-(piperidin-1-ylmethyl)-1-naphthaldehyde (compound 2), a candidate for a molecular switch based on intramolecular proton transfer, was investigated by ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations. In acetonitrile a mixture of molecules in the enol and zwitterionic proton transfer (PT) form exists in the ground state. However, the zwitterion is the energetically favored one in the electronically excited state. Optical excitation of the enol form results in intramolecular proton transfer and formation of the PT form within 1.4 ps. In addition we observe the appearance of a long living species with a rate of 1/(330 ps) which returns to the original ground state on time scales beyond 2 ns and which is attributed to the triplet state. In toluene the enol form is the only observed ground state tautomer, but no light induced proton transfer occurs. Again the long living triplet state is formed, even with a faster rate of 1/(11 ps). In methanol hydrogen bonds between 2 and solvent molecules stabilize strongly the PT form in the ground as well as in the excited state. Also in this case no light induced intramolecular proton transfer was observed but the formation of a long living species was. However, its absorption spectrum is distinctly different from the triplet state seen in acetonitrile and methanol.

- Abstract
We have measured the forward-backward asymmetry in e+e-→bb and e+e-→cc processes using hadronic events containing muons or electrons. The data sample corresponds to 4100000 hadronic decays of the Z0. From a fit to the single lepton and dilepton p and pT spectra, we determine Abb=0.086±0.015±0.007 and Acc=0.083±0.038±0.027 at the effective center-of-mass energy √s=91.24 GeV. These measurements yield a value of the electroweak mixing angle sin2 θw=0.2336±0.0029. © 1992.

- Abstract
We have studied the four-fermion processes ee → eeee, eeμμ, eeττ, μμμμ, μμττ, eeqq and μμqq with the L3 detector at LEP. For an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-, corresponding to 960 000 hadronic Z decays, we find a total of 67 candidate events. The rate and kinematical distributions are found to be consistent with first order Monte Carlo calculations based on the Standard Model. No significant structure is seen in the dilepton invariant or recoil mass spectra. © 1994.

Using the L3 detector, the branching ratio BR(b → πνX) has been measured using a sample of Z → bb events tagged by high momentum and high transverse momentum leptons in one hemisphere and with missing energy in the opposite hemisphere. From a sample of 948 000 hadronic events we find BR(b → πνX) = (2.4 ± 0.7 (stat.) ± 0.8 (syst.))%. © 1994.

- Abstract
The L3 detector at LEP has been used to determine the number of light neutrino families by measuring the cross section of single photon even in e+e- collisions at energies near the Z0 resonance. We have observed 61 single photon candidates with more than 1.5 GeV of deposited energy in the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter, for a total integrated luminosity of 3.0 pb-1. From a likelihood fir to the single photon cross sections, we determin Nν=3.24 ± 0.46 (statistical) ±0.22 (systematic). © 1992.

- Abstract
A more precise determination of the B0-B0 mixing parameter in Z0 decays based on a fourfold increase in statistics has been made using the 1990 and 1991 L3 data. The analysis of the dilepton events, muons and electrons, gives: χB = 0.121 ± 0.017 (stat) ± 0.006 (sys). Using the value of χd measured at the γ(4S) we derive the following limit for χs:χs > 0.16 (90% CL). © 1992.

- Abstract
We have measured the total and differential cross sections of the reaction e+e- → γγ(γ) at center-of-mass energies around 91 GeV, with an integrated luminosity of 14.2 pb-1. The results are in good agreement with QED predictions. We set lower limits, at 95% confidence level, on the QED cutoff parameters of Λ+ > 139 GeV, Λ- > 108 GeV and on the mass of an excited electron of me* > 127 GeV. We searched for Z0 rare decays with photonic signitures in the final state. Upper limits, at 95% confidence level, for branching ratio of Z0 decaying into π0γ/γγ, νγ and γγγ are 1.2 × 10-4, 1.8 × 10-4, 3.3 × 10-5 respectively. © 1992.

- Abstract
A study of twelve distinct decay channels of the ηc has been performed with the L3 detector at LEP, for an integrated luminosity of 30 pb-1. Summing all channels, 28 candidate events have been identified, with an estimated background of 11 events. The two-photon radiative width is evaluated to be Γγγ(ηc) = 8.0 ± 2.3 ± 2.4 keV. © 1993.

- Abstract
We have measured the time integrated B0B0 mixing parameter and the forward-backward asymmetry in the process e+e- → bb using hadronic events containing muons or electrons. The data sample corresponds to 1,044,000 hadronic decays of the Z. From a fit to the momentum and transverse momentum distributions for single lepton and dilepton events, we have determined the B0B0 mixing parameter to be χB = 0.123 ± 0.012 (stat.) ± 0.008 (sys.), and the bb forward-backward asymmetry at the effective center-of-mass energy √s = 91.30 GeV to be Abb = 0.087 ± 0.011 (stat.) ± 0.004 (sys.) This measurement corresponds to a value of the effective electroweak mixing angle of sin2θw = 0.2335 ± 0.0021. © 1994.

- Abstract
From the analysis of the reactions e+e-→l+l-(nγ) (l=e,μ,τ) we observe four events, one e+e-γγ and three μ+μ-γγ, with the invariant mass of the photon pairs close to 60 GeV. These events were selected from a data sample collected in the L3 detector corresponding to 950 000 produced Z0's. More data are necessary to ascertain the origin of these events. © 1992.

- Abstract
We report on a detailed study of the energy and particle flow in the event plane of three-jet events (qqg) and radiative two-jet events (qqγ) in hadronic Z decays recorded with the L3 detector. We find a significant decrease in particle and energy density in the angular region between quark and antiquark jets for qqg events as compared with qqγ events. Several QCD model predictions are compared with the observed effect. © 1995.

The aim of the current report is to shed light on the tautomerism of 4-((Phenylimino)methyl) naphthalene-l-ol in solution, which was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. It was found that this compound does not have the typical tautomeric behavior of its analog 4-Phenylazo-naphthalen-l-ol. The complicated equilibrium between the enol- and keto-like forms and two kinds of dimers that can exist in solution, is strongly dependent on the proton acceptor/donor abilities of the solvent. Using advanced data treatment quantitative information about the tautomeric and dimeric equilibrium constants was obtained. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We update the results of a search for the Standard Model neutral Higgs boson using a data sample corresponding to 1 062 000 hadronic Z decays. We report on a general search for neutral and charged Higgs bosons with no assumption that the Higgs sector consists of a single doublet as in the minimal standard model. No signal inconsistent with background is observed in any of the decay channels analysed. From the results of direct searches, model independent limits on Higgs bremsstrahlung and on Higgs pair production from the Z0 are presented. We interpret the bremsstrahlung limits in the general two-doublet model. Z0 lineshape measurements further restrict the parameter space available in the two-doublet model. Finally, the results are interpreted in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

We have searched for anomalous Z --> gamma gamma gamma events with the L3 detector at LEP. No significant deviations from the expected QED e(+)e(-)-->gamma gamma gamma events are observed. The branching ratio upper limit for a composite Z decaying directly into three photons is found to be 1.0 x 10(-1) at 95% C.L. The branching ratio upper limits for the process Z-->gamma X,X-->gamma gamma are in the range of 0.4 to 1.3 x 10(-5), depending on the mass and width of the scalar particle X. In the context of a model with magnetic monopoles coupling to the Z, we find BR(Z-->gamma gamma gamma) < 0.8 x 10(-5) at 95% C.L; this results in a lower mass limit of 510 GeV for a magnetic monopole.

We report on a detailed study of the energy and particle flow in the event plane of three-jet events q(q) over barg$ and radiative two-jet events in hadronic Z decays recorded with the L3 detector. We find a significant decrease in particle and energy density in the angular region between quark and antiquark jets for q(q) over barg$ events as compared with events. Several QCD model predictions are compared with the observed effect.

We have studied the four-fermion processes ee --> eeee, eemumu, eetautau, mumumumu, mumutautau, eeqq and mumuqq with the L3 detector at LEP. For an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1, corresponding to 960000 hadronic Z decays, we find a total of 67 candidate events. The rate and kinematical distributions are found to be consistent with first order Monte Carlo calculations based on the Standard Model. No significant structure is seen in the dilepton invariant or recoil mass spectra.

In this report we summarize the major results from the first three years of running of the L3 detector at the Large Electron Positron collider (LEP). The L3 detector was designed to measure electrons, photons and muons with high precision; it has achieved (DELTAE/E) almost-equal-to 1.4% for electrons and photons at E = 45 GeV and (DELTAp/p) almost-equal-to 2.5% for muons at p = 45 GeV. Most of the experimental results presented are based on approximately 500 000 Z events. The data provide four independent checks of the Standard Model weak neutral currents to an accuracy of almost-equal-to 1%. These are: the measurement of Z parameters; the measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry of lepton pairs; the measurement of asymmetry parameters from Z --> bbBAR decays; and the measurement of the tau lepton polarization asymmetry. The data also provide information on weak charged currents from measurements of b hadrons such as decay width, lifetime, and B0-B0BAR mixing, and from measurements Of tau leptons such as their lifetime and branching ratios. The large number of Z events and the resolution of the L3 detector allow precision tests of QED and QCD, including the production of pi0, eta and hard photons. Leptonic final states with hard isolated photons are analyzed and high mass photon pairs are observed. Higgs boson production has not been observed and limits are given in the context of the Standard Model and its supersymmetric extensions. We also present upper limits on rare Z decays such as Z --> gammagammagamma and on flavor violating decays such as Z --> etau, mutau. Finally, upper limits obtained in the search for various new particles and new interactions are reported.
