The main focus of the chapter is to introduce and describe the central characteristics of common good leadership and establish existing connections to servant leadership. The multiple notions of the common good have originated in different philosophical traditions, and common good leadership overlaps with a variety of positive and propositive leadership styles, particularly servant leadership; therefore, the most relevant traits and skills of both leadership styles will be analyzed, providing insights into whether leading for the common good can be considered an act of service and if acts of service are enough to drive collective actions towards the common good. Literature review and content analysis were used as the methodologies of the study.

This chapter analyzes the phenomenon known as the great resignation or the big quit, which entails the massive voluntary resignations or mass exodus of workers that have been taking place in different organizations across the globe. Although the notion has acquired relevance during the COVID-19 pandemic and is connected to reassessing or revaluating work and the fragility of life, it was first developed in 2019 by Professor Antony Klotz of Texas A&M University. Different factors associated with this phenomenon are described, along with changes that will occur in the world of work in order to deal with The Great Resignation.

This chapter presents an overview of occupational health in remote work from the self-care perspective. A literature review regarding remote working conditions and their effects on health and well-being is included, along with an analysis of the most relevant self-care and practices that have been developed for working at the distance. The study focuses on faculty, specifically at a private university in Puebla, Mexico, and the effects of the pandemic-induced remote work schemes on their well-being, along with the most common ailments that emerged from remote working conditions and self-care practices that can be adopted to prevent or reduce them. A survey was conducted among faculty members to understand the health implications of remote work and what people have been doing to deal with them. The concept of health circles is introduced to help explain specific actions taken to promote self-care and group care.

Although there are classical and modern leadership styles, from a historical perspective, hybrid leadership practices have been the norm. It is essential to state that the idea of hybrid leadership is not new, nor has it resulted from hybrid working conditions. This chapter analyzes hybrid leadership from different perspectives, tracing its origins, the start of publications in the field, and its evolution. A short bibliometric analysis is included to provide a general background about how the study of hybrid leadership has evolved. The different leadership styles and models connected to hybrid leadership will be analyzed, as well as its main characteristics. The goal is to present an overview of hybrid leadership and how it has been applied in different contexts.

This chapter analyzes grief in organizations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has become a challenge that human resources professionals need to include in their future strategies. The chapter provides a literature review surrounding the concepts of grief and loss, especially pandemic-related grief and grief in the workplace. Additionally, it includes the most relevant scales used to evaluate grief and bereavement related to different types of loss. Best practices are included to present a general overview of how grief and loss can be dealt with in a way in which the positive emotions can be used to outcast lasting negative emotions. A modified version of the pandemic grief scale was applied in a private business school in Mexico to analyze the impact of grief in the workplace during the health crisis.

This chapter presents a study performed in a private university in the state of Puebla, Mexico to analyze the effects of remote work on the health and well-being of faculty during the third trimester of 2020 that could lead to burnout. The study includes working conditions, psychosomatic factors, and emotional exhaustion. Results have been analyzed based on gender differences. The university authorities decided to take on the challenge of identifying and tackling increasing well-being issues, especially considering two official regulations in the country that deal with psychosocial risks and remote work. Different activities and webinars were developed to help faculty and staff make self-care part of their daily routine during social distancing, thus reducing added stress and burnout.

La pandemia de COVID-19 trajo consigo un incremento sustancial del trabajo remoto que inició como una respuesta de emergencia, pero que se mantuvo durante más de un año en ciertos sectores y funciones. Hasta antes de la pandemia, se habían analizado los beneficios del trabajo remoto en cuanto a la salud mental, el bienestar general y el incremento en la productividad laboral, bajo condiciones donde el trabajador decidía cómo y dónde quería trabajar. La modificación forzada a la rutina laboral y a las condiciones generales del empleo resultaron en una serie de afectaciones negativas tanto en la salud como en el bienestar general de los trabajadores remotos. Este artículo presenta una recopilación exhaustiva de los riesgos y problemas en la salud ocupacional de los empleados remotos, así como recomendaciones para reducirlos y evitarlos.

This chapter analyses the effects of remote work on family relationships during confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study is centered on faculty and staff members from a private business school in Puebla, Mexico. The research was conducted almost five months after the university closed its doors and moved all its activities online, having participants time to adapt to the new normal. A scale was developed and validated, and later on, it was applied in a country where family values, cultures, and traditions are strong. The scale included five distinct areas of study: remote working conditions, time and task management, work performance, stress, and family relations. All the business school faculty and administrative staff were invited to participate in the study. Results show employees' perceptions about how working remotely positively or negatively affected their relationships at home and their productivity at work, leading to the design of best practices and useful guidelines that will minimize the adverse effects of remote work while enhancing the positive ones.

This chapter presents a general overview of workplace spirituality. A bibliometric analysis was developed to show the evolution of research in the field; the most relevant areas of study; leading institutions in which research is being performed; funding agencies; top authors, journals, and publishers; as well as additional relevant information. Different conceptualizations and topics connected to spirituality at work have been included. Differentiations are established between spirituality and religion. Various scales developed to assess spirituality at work are included, along with guidelines about how spirituality can be promoted in the workplace.

This chapter analyzes the evolution of the new ways of working, especially in terms of algorithms and machine learning. Special attention is given to algorithmic management and its ethical concerns, as well as to practical examples of the application of algorithms in different sectors. Faculty discussions about how to best prepare students to deal with human-machine interactions at work are presented, with algorithmic management and accountability the discussion's central axis. In algorithmic management, there are distinct positions to analyze; one that favors innovation and efficiency and privileges dignified work and ethics. A brief proposal on introducing algorithmic ethics into the programs offered at a private business school in Mexico is included.

This chapter describes the digital competencies that have become essential in the workforce and how higher education institutions (HEIs) are trying to keep up in a moment in which faculty members have been acquiring digital skills alongside students. A field study was conducted with faculty from HEIs in Mexico to identify the differences between the digital skills that faculty possessed previous to the pandemic and those acquired as a result of remote work. It also analyzes the digital tools they have been provided with to perform their jobs, the training they have received, and the digital skills that they still lack to help students acquire the digital competencies demanded in the workforce. The objective is to identify areas of opportunity and create general guidelines that will help develop critical digital skills. A literature review of the most relevant aspects of digital dexterity and digital competence in higher education (HE) is presented. An analysis of the current context and how it is producing changes faster than before is also included.

This chapter analyzes the situation of the tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The health crisis's main effects are explained, as well as how the sector is learning to function under strict sanitary and hygiene measures, relying more on technology than before. The opportunities and challenges in a low contact economy are described. Post-pandemic fear, crowded conditions, mass tourism, travel guilt and shaming, extensive job losses, fixed costs, and employee morale are the challenges identified. The opportunities include variants of slow tourism, products and services for the remote worker, and the digitalization of the sector.

This chapter will describe scenario planning and establish its value in facing crises and chaotic situations. It explains how research in the field has evolved and describes context conditions such as uncertainty, crisis, and chaos, which provide fertile grounds for scenario planning. A bibliometric analysis is presented to illustrate the increase in the study of scenario planning as a tool to deal with uncertainty. Examples from scenario planning around the world are introduced to show its global application and potential. A comparative analysis is presented based on different exercises in scenario planning developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide an insight into the key uncertainties linked to the health crisis and how a broad perspective can help provide clarity in chaotic environments.

This chapter presents virtual collaboration in remote project management as a way to develop sustainable business practices. As temporary organizations, virtual projects have grown substantially, mainly because of the confinement conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. A study was conducted to identify the main issues that employees working in virtual projects in the state of Tamaulipas in Mexico have faced. A survey based on the remote work and its effects scale was used. The most relevant tools and techniques that have been applied in virtual collaboration in remote project management are briefly described. The objective is to shed light on the importance of technology, time and task management, team collaboration and integration, communication, and trust to develop successful projects.
