A distributional multimedia model was developed and applied to the Lake Biwa-Yodo River Basin in Japan to reproduce the mercury level in different environmental media. This model was developed based on a Level III steady-state fugacity model, and the space was divided into four environmental media (atmosphere, water, soil, and sediment). The mass transfer of Hg in this model consists of emission, deposition, sedimentation inside one medium, and advection between different media. The dissolution rate and ion exchange equilibrium have also been considered. We estimated Hg emissions in the Lake Biwa-Yodo River Basin from 1957 to 2009 based on the Pollutant Release and Transfer Registry (PRTR) system and the domestic usage of Hg in Japan. The distribution of emission was based on land data, including industrial land area, industrial location, and proportion of the population. The calculated and observed Hg concentrations were compared to evaluate the model. At both large scale and small scale, results showed that the distributional model could predict Hg concentrations in all environmental media. Sediment and soil media showed the accumulation of Hg by showing the higher concentrations than that of other media. In terms of geographical distribution, the urban area and downstream of the river showed high Hg concentrations owing to high Hg emissions. The Hg concentration in the atmosphere was affected by the transboundary pollution. Thus, the distributional multimedia model could reliably calculate the environmental Hg concentration and be utilized in environmental monitoring and management.

Candida vulturna is a recently discovered and not widely documented ascomycetous yeast phylogenetically related to the outbreak-causing and multidrug-resistant Candida auris. A middle-aged Japanese man with no discernible immunodeficiency was admitted to hospital with ileal diverticulitis. Following laparoscopic right hemicolectomy against abscess formation on postoperative day (POD) 7, continuous fungemia occurred due to Candida haemulonii, identified using a conventional method by confirming the biochemical phenotype. Micafungin was initiated; however, the fungus was persistently isolated from blood cultures. Eventually, the antifungal agent was changed to a combination of liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB) and caspofungin (CPFG), which cleared the infection, and no pathogens were detected in the blood cultures on POD 31. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed septic emboli in the lungs and spleen; however, no evidence of vasculitis was observed. Moreover, sequential echocardiography did not reveal any signs of infectious endocarditis. Finally, CPFG and L-AMB were administered to the patient for 7 and 9 weeks, respectively, during which the patient's symptoms did not relapse. The strain was later genetically identified as C. vulturna. This case report illustrates a clinical presentation of C. vulturna and provides the diagnostic approach and treatment methods for this pathogen.

Although hyperglycemia and hypertension are well-known risk factors for glomerular injury in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), specific risk factors for tubular injury remain unclear. We aimed to clarify the differences between risk factors for glomerular injury and risk factors for tubular injury in individuals with T2D. We categorized 1243 subjects into four groups based on urinary biomarkers, including the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) and L-type fatty acid-binding protein-to-creatinine ratio (uL-ABPCR) as a normal (N) group (uACR < 30 mg/gCr and uL-FABPCR < 5 μg/gCr; n = 637), a glomerular specific injury (G) group (uACR ≥ 30 mg/gCr and uL-FABPCR < 5 μg/gCr; n = 248), a tubular specific injury (T) group (uACR < 30 mg/gCr and uL-FABPCR ≥ 5 μg/gCr; n = 90), and a dual injury (D) group (uACR ≥ 30 mg/gCr and uL-FABPCR ≥ 5 μg/gCr; n = 268). Logistic regression analysis referencing the N group revealed that BMI, current smoking, and hypertension were risk factors for the G group, creatinine (Cr) and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index were risk factors for the T group, and BMI, hypertension, HbA1c, Cr, and duration of diabetes were risk factors for the D group. While hypertension was a distinct specific risk factor for glomerular injury, the FIB-4 index was a specific contributor to the prevalence of tubular injury. On the other hand, the logistic regression analysis revealed that the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) did not show any significant association with the G group, T group, or D group. Taken together, the development of liver fibrosis rather than liver steatosis is an inherent threat relating to tubular injury in individuals with T2D.

The currents of gyre (circulation) flow play an important role in the transportation and mixing of dissolved or suspended nutrients and chemical substances. In recent years, climate change has affected the flow field in Lake Biwa. However, how much climate change can influence the flow field has not been clarified enough yet. In the present study, using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, we investigated the effect of changes in air temperature, wind speed, and precipitation on the change of the flow field in Lake Biwa. For sensitivity analysis, numerical simulations were performed for a baseline case using realistic meteorological data from 2007 to 2012, as well as hypothetical cases using meteorological data. The analysis revealed that the changes in air temperature and precipitation changed stratification and vorticity in the surface layer in each season. The strength of the stratification affected the gyre strength in the surface layer. The change in wind speed, on the other hand, changed the wind stress acting on the lake's surface, influencing the strength of gyre significantly. Increased wind speed lengthened the radius of the gyre in Lake Biwa, while decreased wind speed made it weaker above and below the thermocline. HIGHLIGHTS The currents of gyre flow play an important role in the transportation and mixing of dissolved or suspended nutrients and chemical substances.; The significant feature of the flow field in Lake Biwa, Japan is the system of several gyres formed in the surface layer of the lake.; The change in wind speed altered the wind stress acting on the surface of the lake, which significantly influenced the strength of the gyre.;

Objective: To examine the relationship between the cognitive assessment of stress (cognitive appraisal) caused in a scenario requiring basic life support (BLS) and the roles during BLS/personality traits in nursing students. Methods: We conducted an anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey for 264 freshman and senior nursing students. The study period was one month from June 2019. The questionnaire included characteristics, roles (active involvement group/passive involvement group/no involvement group), Cognitive Appraisal Rating Scale (CARS), and Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI). We only included data for female students (107 people) in the analysis because very little data is available for male students. This study developed a coupled atmospheric–marine model using the COAWST model system for the Harima Nada area between spring 2010 and winter 2011 to evaluate the seasonal influence of the Kako River’s discharge in the sea. The Kako River is one of the largest rivers in southwest Japan, contributing almost half of the freshwater discharged in the Harima Nada region in the Seto Inland Sea. Validation was conducted for the entire period, showing a good performance for the atmospheric and marine variables selected. Multiple experiments injecting an inert tracer in the Kako River estuary were performed to simulate the seasonal river water distribution from the estuary into the sea and to analyze the seasonal differences in concentration patterns and mean residence times in Harima Nada. Because the study area is shallow, the results were evaluated at the surface and 10 m depth layers and showed significant seasonal differences in tracer distribution, circulation patterns, and mean residence times for the region. On the other hand, differences seemed to not be significant during the same season at different depths. The obtained results also agreed with the area’s natural water circulation, showing that the Kako River waters tend to distribute towards the west coast of Harima Nada in the warmer seasons but shift towards the east in winter. The influence of the Kako River in the center of the study area is seasonal and strongly dependent on the direction of the horizontal velocities more than their magnitude. The mean residence times varied seasonally from approximately 30 days in spring to 12 days in fall. The magnitude of the horizontal velocity was found to be maximum during summer when circulation patterns at the surface and 10 m depth in the central part of Harima Nada also seem to promote the strongest horizontal and vertical mixes.

A distributional multimedia model was developed based on one-box model and applied to the Lake Biwa-Yodo River basin in Japan to assess the risk of heavy metal lead. As a useful approach to evaluate the environmental risks, the one-box model could predict the lead concentration by assuming the target area as a homogenies box and calculating mass balance between four environmental media. However, the homogeneity of such wide area assumed by the one-box model is inappropriate. The result of one-box model was not accurate, which cannot show the spatial distribution of pollutants or show the internal transfer of pollutants over time. In this study, the distributional model improved the previous model by incorporating spatial gradients, internal advections and finer meshes. The model was applied to the region from 1957 to 2016 based on the amount of pollutant emission data from the Ministry of Economy's official report, measured meteorological data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, land-use data from the Ministry of Transport, and the river discharge of the hydrology model. The calculated lead concentrations were compared to the observed concentrations at several monitoring stations. The results of this study indicated that the simulated concentration had a gradient inside the region. The area near the emission point and downstream of the river showed relatively high concentrations. For any location, the pollutant concentration is affected by direct emissions, and by adjacent areas due to wind and river discharge. The sediment and water media accumulated more pollutants, and the atmospheric concentration was underestimated in the major pollutant discharge area. This was attributed to underestimation of the distribution of lead emissions in urban areas.

Background/Aims The safety and efficacy of filgotinib, a once-daily oral Janus kinase 1 preferential inhibitor, were evaluated in Japanese patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) in the phase 2b/3 SELECTION trial. Methods SELECTION (NCT02914522) was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial comprising 2 induction studies and a maintenance study. Adults with moderately to severely active UC were randomized in induction study A (biologic-naïve) or B (biologic-experienced) to receive filgotinib 200 mg, 100 mg, or placebo once daily for 11 weeks. Patients in clinical remission or Mayo Clinic score response at week 10 entered the 47-week maintenance study. Efficacy and safety outcomes were assessed in Japanese patients enrolled in Japan. Results Overall, 37 and 72 Japanese patients were enrolled in Japan in induction studies A and B, respectively, and 54 entered the maintenance study. Numerically higher proportions of filgotinib 200 mg-treated than placebo-treated patients achieved clinical remission in induction study A (4/15 [26.7%] vs. 0/6 [0%]) and the maintenance study (5/20 [25.0%] vs. 0/9 [0%]), but not induction study B (1/29 [3.4%] vs. 1/14 [7.1%]). Both doses were well tolerated, and no new safety signals were noted. Herpes zoster was reported in 1 filgotinib 200 mg-treated patient in each of induction study A (2.3%, 1/44) and the maintenance study (5.0%, 1/20). Conclusions These data, alongside those of the overall SELECTION population, suggest the potential of filgotinib 200 mg as a viable treatment option for Japanese patients with UC. Owing to small patient numbers, data should be interpreted cautiously.

Study Design A cadaveric study. Purpose To investigate the anatomical features of segmental arteries and veins in the anterior part of the spinal column to prevent segmental vessel injury. Overview of Literature The lateral transpsoas approach to the lumbar intervertebral discs (IVD) is associated with the risk of segmental vessel injury. Previous studies have described the vascular anatomy on the lateral part of the vertebral body. However, there are no studies that describe the segmental vessels on its anterior aspect. Here, we report the important anatomical features of the segmental arteries and veins that can intersect the anterior part of the IVD. These vessels are considered at risk of vascular injury when placing the anterior retractors during lateral lumbar interbody fusion or cutting the anterior longitudinal ligament during anterior column realignment. Methods Five formalin-embalmed human cadavers were used. We assessed the proportion of segmental arteries and veins that intersected the IVD in the L2–L5 range and their course on the anterior part of the spinal column. Results The segmental arteries and veins commonly intersect the anterior part of the IVD (artery, 28.1%; vein, 42.1%). Seven of 10 (70%) segmental arteries at L2 intersected the IVD, but only one artery intersected the IVD at L3 and L4. The proportions of segmental veins that intersected the IVD were 60%, 50%, and 16.7% at L2, L3, and L4, respectively. Conclusions The segmental arteries and veins frequently intersect the IVD in the anterior part of the spinal column. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these individual anatomical features to prevent vascular damage during lateral lumbar interbody fusion surgery.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Thrombin exerts various pathophysiological functions by activating protease‐activated receptors (PARs). Recent data have shown that PARs influence the development of glomerular diseases including diabetic kidney disease (DKD) by regulating inflammation. Heparin cofactor II (HCII) specifically inactivates thrombin; thus, we hypothesized that low plasma HCII activity correlates with DKD development, as represented by albuminuria. Materials and Methods Plasma HCII activity and spot urine biomarkers, including albumin and liver‐type fatty acid‐binding protein (L‐FABP), were determined as the urine albumin‐to‐creatinine ratio (uACR) and the urine L‐FABP‐to‐creatinine ratio (uL‐FABPCR) in 310 Japanese patients with diabetes mellitus (176 males and 134 females). The relationships between plasma HCII activities and those DKD urine biomarkers were statistically evaluated. In addition, the relationship between plasma HCII activities and annual uACR changes was statistically evaluated for 201/310 patients (115 males and 86 females). Results The mean plasma HCII activity of all participants was 93.8 ± 17.7%. Multivariate‐regression analysis including confounding factors showed that plasma HCII activity independently contributed to the suppression of the uACR and log‐transformed uACR values (P = 0.036 and P = 0.006, respectively) but not uL‐FABPCR (P = 0.541). In addition, plasma HCII activity significantly and inversely correlated with annual uACR and log‐transformed uACR increments after adjusting for confounding factors (P = 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively). Conclusions The plasma HCII activity was inversely and specifically associated with glomerular injury in patients with diabetes. The results suggest that HCII can serve as a novel predictive factor for early‐stage DKD development, as represented by albuminuria.

Study Design Human ligamentum flavum–derived cells (HFCs) were obtained from surgical samples for a basic experimental study. Purpose We sought to evaluate the inflammatory response of human ligamentum flavum cells to investigate hypertrophic changes occurring in the ligamentum flavum. Overview of Literature Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a disease commonly observed in the elderly. The number of patients with LSS has increased over time, yet the pathomechanisms of LSS still have not been fully elucidated. One of the clinical features of LSS is hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum, which results in narrowing of the lumbar spinal canal. Some reports have suggested that ligamentum flavum hypertrophy is associated with inflammation and fibrosis; meanwhile, the p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase is involved in the hypertrophy of human ligamentum flavum cells. Methods HFCs were obtained from patients with LSS who underwent surgery. HFCs were stimulated by tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and a p38 MAP kinase inhibitor, SB203580. Phosphorylation of the p38 MAP kinase was analyzed by western blotting. The concentration of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the conditioned medium was measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay and IL-6 messenger RNA expression levels were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results TNF-α induced the phosphorylation of p38 MAP kinase in a time-dependent manner, which was suppressed by the p38 MAP kinase inhibitor, SB203580. TNF-α also stimulated IL-6 release in both a time- and dose-dependent manner. On its own, SB203580 did not stimulate IL-6 secretion from HFCs; however, it dramatically suppressed the degree of IL-6 release stimulated by TNF-α from HFCs. Conclusions This is the first report suggesting that TNF-α stimulates the gene expression and protein secretion of IL-6 via p38 MAP kinase in HFCs. A noted association between tissue hypertrophy and inflammation suggests that the p38 MAP kinase inflammatory pathway may be a therapeutic molecular target for LSS.

To create advanced materials with minimal energy consumption and environmental impacts, a green and sustainable powder processing technology is essential. The authors have developed this technique based on powder grinding technology. In this paper, the authors will explain the recent progress of the smart powder processing, and its applications. Firstly, particle bonding process, and novel one-pot processing methods to synthesize nanoparticles, to create nanostructured composite granules and to form nano-porous films on substrates in dry phase will be discussed. Their applications on the advanced material fabrications contributing to the sustainable economy will also be explained. Then, the use of grinding technology in wet processing to synthesize nanoparticles and control their morphology will be explained. Smart powder processing can be a foundation to move forward material development technologies and create many more high-quality advanced materials in the future.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident caused an accumulation of 137Cs in coastal sediment. The 137Cs supply from rivers to the ocean can affect the long-term fate of 137Cs in coastal sediment. Since the Fukushima coastal river basins include large decontaminated and evacuation order areas, considering the decontamination work and resumption of agriculture is important for predicting the 137Cs supply. We conducted a 30-year prediction of the 137Cs supply from the Fukushima coastal rivers to the ocean using a distributed radiocesium prediction model, considering the effects of human activities. In river basins with decontaminated and evacuation order areas, human activities reduced the total 137Cs outflow from agricultural lands, urban lands, and forest areas to the rivers and the 137Cs supply to the ocean by 5.0% and 6.0%, respectively. These results indicated that human activities slightly impacted the 137Cs outflow and supply. The 137Cs supply from rivers impacted by the accident to the coastal sediment was estimated to correspond to 11–36% of the total 137Cs in the coastal sediment in the early phase of the accident. Therefore, the 137Cs supply from rivers to the ocean is important for the long-term behavior of 137Cs in coastal sediment.

The central concern in the fabrication of carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced metal composites is the well balance between uniform dispersion and structural integrity of CNTs. Rapid and uniform self-assembly of CNTs and spherical Aluminum (Al) particles into a core-shell structure is realized by a smart mechanical powder processing. The factors influencing the dispersion uniformity and structural integrity of CNTs during the processing are studied, including the size of Al particles, mixing speed and mixing time. It is revealed that a size of 35 μm is preferred for the Al particles to tear apart the CNT clusters and obtain a uniform dispersion of CNTs on Al surface. Different composite states, CNTs are singly dispersed, thickly wrapped, or embedded in the Al particles, can be obtained by changing the mixing speed. Well coordination between the CNT dispersion homogeneity and structural integrity could be achieved under suitable processing condition. Therefore, it can be adopted as an efficient and intelligent technology to achieve the desired performance in CNT/Al composites.

Abstract Mechanochemical reactions can be induced in a solution by the collision of balls to produce high-temperature and high-pressure zones, with the reactions occurring through a dissolution–precipitation mechanism due to a change in solubility. However, only a fraction of the impact energy contributes to the mechanochemical reactions, while the rest is mainly consumed by the wear of balls and the heat generation. To clarify whether the normal or tangential component of collisions makes a larger contribution on the reaction, herein we studied the effect of collision direction on a wet mechanochemical reaction through combined analysis of the experimental reaction rates and simulated ball motion. Collisions of balls in the normal direction were found to contribute strongly to the wet mechanochemical reaction. These results could be used to improve the synthesis efficiency, predict the reaction, and lower the wear in the wet mechanochemical reactions.

Rapid urbanization has led to increased environmental pollution in Vietnam, especially air pollution issues. In this study, we used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with an automated identification and quantification system database to detect and quantitate compounds in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5). A total of 288 compounds classified in 19 pollutant categories based on their origins were detected in PM2.5 samples collected in three areas of Hanoi during winter. The total content of substances detected ranged from 41.08 to 795.00 ng.m−3. The characteristics and concentrations of organic pollutants differed among the industrial, urban, and agricultural sampling areas, with average concentrations of 179.00, 112.10, and 529.40 ng.m−3, respectively. In this comprehensive study on trace organic compounds conducted with samples collected at three sites, we investigating the basic impact of three main factors on the environment. This study contributes to the literature by providing a data set on the content of trace organic substances in the air at the study site.

Numerical simulations are performed to determine the angular dependence of the MIe scattering cross-section intensities of pure water droplets and pollutants such as contaminated water droplets and black carbon as a function of the wavelength of the incident laser light, complex refractive index, and size of the scatterer. Our results show distinct scattering features when varying the various scattering parameters, thereby allowing the identification of the scattering particle with specific application to the identification of atmospheric pollutants including black carbon. Regardless of the type of scatterer, the scattering intensity is nearly uniform with a slight preference for forward scattering when the size of the particle is within 20% of the incident laser’s wavelength. The scattering patterns start to exhibit distinguishable features when the size parameter equals 1.77, corresponding to an incident laser wavelength of 0.355 μm and a particle radius of 0.1 μm. The patterns then become increasingly unique as the size parameter increases. Based on these calculations, we propose a time-gated lidar scheme consisting of multiple detectors that can rotate through a telescopic angle and be placed equidistantly around the scattering particles to collect the backscattered light and a commercially available Q-switched laser system emitting at tunable laser wavelengths. By using a pulsed laser with 10-ns pulse duration, our scheme could distinguish scattering centers that are at least 3 m apart. Our scheme called MIe Scattering Time-gated multi-Static LIDAR (MISTS–LIDAR) would be capable of identifying the type of atmospheric pollutant and mapping its location with a spatial resolution of a few meters.

Abstract The global pandemic of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli is associated with sequence type 131 (ST131). However, mechanisms of ST131 spread remain unclear. This study searched for proteins with amino acid substitutions specific for ST131 and used proteomics analysis to clarify ST131 characteristics. Five proteins had ST131-specific amino acid substitutions: uncharacterized protein YahO with E34A (m/z 7655); UPF0337 protein YjbJ with V59D, D60S and T63K (m/z 8351); uncharacterized protein YnfD with S106T (m/z 8448); and acid stress chaperone HdeA with Q92K and N94S (m/z 9714). Soluble cytochrome b562 (m/z 11783) showed seven amino acid substitutions, and the sequence differed between clade C of the pandemic clade and non-C. In silico analysis showed YahO protein-protein interaction with YjbJ, possibly related to biofilm formation. Although the function of soluble cytochrome b562 is electron transport of unknown function, its involvement in biofilm formation was predicted. HdeA was a gastric acid resistance-related protein. The function of YnfD was completely unclear. In conclusion, ST131-specific protein amino acid substitutions consisted mainly of a gastric acid resistance protein and proteins of unknown function (possibly involved in biofilm formation), which might be mechanisms for long-term colonization in the human intestinal tract.

In the present study, the fibrous fumed alumina compact with low thermal conductivity is prepared with a mechanical processing technique. The thermal conductivity of the compact remains low up to a temperature of 350°C. For the fibrous compact, the mechanical processing parameters play important role on controlling the thermal insulation capability. The thermal conductivity of compact increases from 0.036 to 0.042 W/m∙K by increasing the rotating speed of rotor. On the other hand, the value remains low by increasing processing time. The strength is decreased due to the increase of processing time. Thus, a lower rotating speed and a shorter processing time could result in a compact with favorable thermal insulation and strength. The results can be related to the surface structure of the coated alumina fibers and granulated structure within the compacts.

The particle’s surface property plays an important role on controlling the thermal insulation performance of fibrous silica compacts. In the present study, the effect of addition of hydrophobic silica on the thermal conductivity of the fibrous silica compacts is investigated. The measurement was conducted using laser flash method and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) method. The thermal conductivity of fibrous silica compacts is only 0.042 W/m K. The addition of 5% hydrophobic silica further reduces the thermal conductivity of fibrous silica compacts to 0.033 W/m K. The thermal conductivity reaches a constant value with higher hydrophobic silica content. The flexural strength decreases with the increase of hydrophobic silica content. A compromise between the thermal insulation and strength is needed. The performance of fibrous silica compacts shows strong dependence on the surface structure of glass fibers.

Abstract Background Statins are generally well-tolerated and serious side effects are infrequent, but some patients experience adverse events and reduce their statin dose or discontinue treatment altogether. Alirocumab is a highly specific, fully human monoclonal antibody to proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), which can produce substantial and sustained reductions of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Methods The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, phase 3 ODYSSEY NIPPON study will explore alirocumab 150 mg every 4 weeks (Q4W) in 163 Japanese patients with hypercholesterolemia who are on the lowest-strength dose of atorvastatin (5 mg/day) or are receiving a non-statin lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) (fenofibrate, bezafibrate, ezetimibe, or diet therapy alone). Hypercholesterolemia is defined as LDL-C ≥ 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L) in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or non-familial hypercholesterolemia with a history of documented coronary heart disease, or ≥120 mg/dL (3.1 mmol/L) in patients with non-familial hypercholesterolemia classified as primary prevention category III (i.e. high-risk patients). During the 12-week double-blind treatment period, patients will be randomized (1:1:1) to receive alirocumab subcutaneously (SC) 150 mg Q4W alternating with placebo for alirocumab Q4W, or alirocumab 150 mg SC every 2 weeks (Q2W), or SC placebo Q2W. The primary efficacy endpoint is the percentage change in calculated LDL-C from baseline to week 12. The long-term safety and tolerability of alirocumab will also be investigated. Here we evaluated the effect of using water retentive pavement or WRP made from fly ash as material for main street in a real city block. We coupled computational fluid dynamics and pavement transport (CFD-PT) model to examine energy balance in the building canopies and ground surface. Two cases of 24 h unsteady analysis were simulated: case 1 where asphalt was used as the pavement material of all ground surfaces and case 2 where WRP was used as main street material. We aim to (1) predict diurnal variation in air temperature, wind speed, ground surface temperature and water content; and (2) compare ground surface energy fluxes. Using the coupled CFD-PT model it was proven that WRP as pavement material for main street can cause a decrease in ground surface temperature. The most significant decrease occurred at 1200 JST when solar radiation was most intense, surface temperature decreased by 13.8°C. This surface temperature decrease also led to cooling of air temperature at 1.5 m above street surface. During this time, air temperature in case 2 decreased by 0.28°C. As the radiation weakens from 1600 JST to 2000 JST, evaporative cooling had also been minimal. Shadow effect, higher albedo and lower thermal conductivity of WRP also contributed to surface temperature decrease. The cooling of ground surface eventually led to air temperature decrease. The degree of air temperature decrease was proportional to the surface temperature decrease. In terms of energy balance, WRP caused a maximum increase in latent heat flux by up to 255 W/m2 and a decrease in sensible heat flux by up to 465 W/m2.

Traffic-related air pollution in street canyons can cause health problems for pedestrians. In order to clarify the behavior of reactive pollutants, such as NOx and O3, in street canyons, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled with a chemistry model and tree canopy model was developed, and then, a set of numerical experiments were performed to investigate the impacts of chemical reactions and aerodynamic effects of trees planted in a canyon. The results were compared with the observation data. Through the results of the numerical experiments designed to simulate a realistic urban street canyon, it was found that chemical reactions have a dominant impact on the NO/NO2 ratio and O3 concentration. While the tree canopy had little impact on the NO/NO2 ratio, it had a moderate impact on the flow field in the canyon and the amount of NOx and O3 in the canyon. In accordance with the aerodynamic effects of tree canopies, the local NOx concentration in the experiments increased and decreased by up to 51% and 11%, respectively. The current findings of this study demonstrate the utility of the proposed model for conducting air quality investigations in urban areas.

This study conducted analyses on biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) emission sources contributing to urban ozone (O3) concentration in Osaka Prefecture, Japan in summer 2010 by using the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) version 3.5.1 and the Community Multiscale Air Quality model (CMAQ) version 5.0.1. This prefecture is characterized by highly urbanized area with small forest area. The contributions of source regions surrounding Osaka were estimated by comparing the baseline case and zero-out cases for BVOC emissions from each source region. The zero-out emission runs showed that the BVOC emissions substantially contributed to urban O3 concentration in Osaka (10.3 ppb: 15.9% of mean daily maximum 1-h O3 concentration) with day-by-day variations of contributing source regions, which were qualitatively explained by backward trajectory analyses. Although O3 concentrations were especially high on 23 July and 2 August 2010, the contribution of BVOC on 23 July (35.4 ppb: 25.6% of daily maximum O3) was much larger than that on 2 August (20.9 ppb: 14.2% of daily maximum O3). To investigate this difference, additional zero-out cases for anthropogenic VOC (AVOC) emissions from Osaka and for VOC emissions on the target days were performed. On 23 July, the urban O3 concentration in Osaka was dominantly increased by the transport from the northwestern region outside Osaka with large contribution of O3 that was produced through BVOC reactions by the day before and was retained over the nocturnal boundary layer. On 2 August, the concentration was dominantly increased by the local photochemical production inside Osaka under weak wind condition with the particularly large contribution of AVOC emitted from Osaka on the day.

Biomass burning (BB) is a major source of atmospheric particles over Indochina during the dry season. Moreover, Indochina has convoluted meteorological scales, and regional meteorological conditions dominate the transport patterns of pollutants. This study focused on the impacts of BB emission inventories and atmospheric reanalyses on simulated PM10 over Indochina in 2014 using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Meteorological fields to input to CMAQ were produced by using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulation with the United States National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final (NCEP FNL) Operational Global Analysis or European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis (ERA-interim). The Fire INventory from NCAR (FINN) v1.5 or the Global Fire Emissions Database including small fires (GFED v4.1s) was selected for BB emissions for the air quality simulation. The simulation case with NCEP FNL and FINN v1.5 (FNL + FINN) performed best throughout 2014, including the season when BB activities were intensified. The normalized percentage difference for maximum daily mean PM10 concentrations at Chiang Mai for FNL + FINN and the two simulation cases applying GFED v4.1s for BB emissions (−53% to −27%) was much larger than that between the FNL + FINN and ERA + FINN cases (10%). BB emission inventories more strongly impacted PM10 simulation than atmospheric reanalyses in highly polluted areas by BB over Indochina in 2014.

Recently, composite particles covered with different kinds of fine particles have been fabricated using various mechanical methods in a dry phase. However, the quantitative analysis of the composite process has not yet been conducted systematically. In this paper, a mechanical processing method called MECHANOFUSION was used to investigate the composite process of glass beads and titanium dioxide fine particles. As a first trial, the ratio of fine particles fixed onto core particles and the BET specific surface area of the processed particles were measured as a function of the processing time. Consequently, the composite process was described as the following two steps: The first is the adhering step whereby fine particles adhere to the core particles' surface, and the second is the compacting step of the fine particle layers. Furthermore, it was found that the BET specific surface area of the processed powder was correlated with the energy consumption per weight of material in the apparatus.† This report was originally printed in J. In this paper, the effect of powder processing conditions on the fracture strength of advanced ceramics is discussed. Manufacturing processes of silicon nitride ceramics and alumina ceramics are utilized to explain the relationship between powder processing conditions and major fracture origin in the ceramics. The preparation conditions of powder slurry are found affecting the structure and strength of powder granules, which can influence the properties of green compact and thus the quality of sintered ceramics. These phenomena can be investigated by using new characterization tools such as the liquid immersion method and the observation technique using thinned ceramics specimen under the transmission mode. Also, very small amount of coarse particles contained in the powder slurry is found starting the fracture in ceramics by using wet sieve analysis and the observation technique with thinned ceramic specimen. As a result, it is found that the major ceramics fracture is originated from the large pores and coarse particles in powder granules, green compact and sintered ceramics. They can be unintentionally introduced in the manufacturing steps of ceramics, such as powder slurry preparation, spray drying, and forming process of green compact. By making use of these characterization tools, effective processing conditions to eliminate the large pores and coarse particles can be identified for producing high quality advanced ceramics.

Smart powder processing stands for novel powder processing techniques that create advanced materials with minimal energy consumption and environmental impacts. Particle bonding technology is a typical smart powder processing technique to make advanced composites. The technology has two main unique features. Firstly, it creates direct bonding between particles without any heat support or binders of any kind in the dry phase. The bonding is achieved through the enhanced particle surface activation induced by mechanical energy, in addition to the intrinsic high surface reactivity of nanoparticles. Using this feature, desired composite particles can be successfully fabricated. The second feature of this technology is its ability to control the nano/micro structure of the assembled composite particles. As a result, it can custom various kinds of nano/micro structures and can produce new materials with a simpler manufacturing process in comparison to wet chemical techniques. In this paper, its application examples for making advanced materials will be explained.These two features lead to the achievement of minimizing energy consumption and environmental impacts when producing advanced materials. By making use of the particle bonding principle, a new one-pot processing method to synthesize nanoparticles without applying extra heat was developed. Furthermore, by carefully controlling the bonding between different kinds of materials in the composite particles, effective separation of elemental components can be achieved. It leads to the development of a novel technique for recycling advanced composite materials and turns them to high-functional applications. In this paper, these approaches will also be introduced. It is our goal to signify the particle bonding technology as a potential advanced processing technique for producing powder materials.

Studies in actual urban settings that integrate chemical reaction modeling, radiation, and particular emissions are mandatory to evaluate the effects of traffic-related air pollution on street canyons. In this paper, airflow patterns and reactive pollutant behavior for over 24 h, in a realistic urban canyon in Osaka City, Japan, was conducted using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled with a chemical reaction model (CBM-IV). The boundary conditions for the CFD model were obtained from mesoscale meteorological and air quality models. Inherent street canyon processes, such as ground and wall radiation, were evaluated using a surface energy budget model of the ground and a building envelope model, respectively. The CFD-coupled chemical reaction model surpassed the mesoscale models in describing the NO, NO2, and O3 transport process, representing pollutants concentrations more accurately within the street canyon since the latter cannot capture the local phenomena because of coarse grid resolution. This work showed that the concentration of pollutants in the urban canyon is heavily reliant on roadside emissions and airflow patterns, which, in turn, is strongly affected by the heterogeneity of the urban layout. The CFD-coupled chemical reaction model characterized better the complex three-dimensional site and hour-dependent dispersion of contaminants within an urban canyon.

The Community Multiscale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) v5.0.2 was applied to PM2.5 simulation in Japan, which is strongly affected by long-range transport (LRT) from anthropogenic sources in the Asian Continent, for one year from April 2010 to March 2011. The model performance for LRT and local pollution (LP) of PM2.5 was evaluated to identify the model processes that need to be improved. CMAQ well simulated temporal and spatial variation patterns of PM2.5 but underestimated the concentration level by 15% on average. The contribution of LRT was estimated from the difference between the baseline simulation case and a zero-emission case for anthropogenic emissions in the continent. The estimated LRT contribution to PM2.5 was 50% on average and generally higher in the western areas of Japan (closer to the continent). Days that were dominantly affected by LRT or LP were determined based on the contribution of LRT to sulfate, which was fairly well simulated and strongly affected by LRT among major PM2.5 components. The underestimation of PM2.5 was larger in LP days (by 26% on average) than LRT days (by 10% on average). Therefore, it is essential to improve local emissions, formation, and loss processes of precursors and PM2.5 in Japan.

Climatic factors such as air temperature and wind speed can affect the structure of stratification in Lake Biwa. In general, the rise in air temperature and the decrease in wind speed weaken the vertical mixing and strengthen the structure of the stratification, which interrupts the transport of the substances. However, how much the change of each climate element can influence the structure of the stratification is not clarified. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effects of each element on the stratification quantitatively. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the change in air temperature and wind speed on the seasonal change of stratification in Lake Biwa by using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model. Numerical simulations were carried out for a baseline case using realistic meteorological data from 2007 to 2012 and hypothetical cases using meteorological data with modified air temperature or wind speed for sensitivity analysis. The analysis showed that the increase and decrease in air temperature changed the vertical water temperature uniformly in almost all layers. Thus, the strength of the stratification is hardly changed. The increase and decrease in wind speed, however, altered the water temperature near the surface of the lake, so that it significantly influenced the stratification. The increase in wind speed made the water parcels of the surface layer well mixed, and the decrease in wind speed made the mixed layer thinner.

This study evaluated the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 3.7 for simulating a series of rainfall events in August 2014 over Japan and investigated the impact of uncertainty in sea surface temperature (SST) on simulated rainfall in the record-high precipitation period. WRF simulations for the heavy rainfall were conducted for six different cases. The heavy rainfall events caused by typhoons and rain fronts were similarly accurately reproduced by three cases: the TQW_5km case with grid nudging for air temperature, humidity, and wind and with a horizontal resolution of 5 km; W_5km with wind nudging and 5-km resolution; and W_2.5km with wind nudging and 2.5-km resolution. Because the nudging for air temperature and humidity in TQW_5km suppresses the influence of SST change, and because W_2.5km requires larger computational load, W_5km was selected as the baseline case for a sensitivity analysis of SST. In the sensitivity analysis, SST around Japan was homogeneously changed by 1 K from the original SST data. The analysis showed that the SST increase led to a larger amount of precipitation in the study period in Japan, with the mean increase rate of precipitation being 13 ± 8% K−1. In addition, 99 percentile precipitation (100 mm d−1 in the baseline case) increased by 13% K−1 of SST warming. These results also indicate that an uncertainty of approximately 13% in the simulated heavy rainfall corresponds to an uncertainty of 1 K in SST data around Japan in the study period.

Water temperature near the surface of a lake increases with increasing air temperature, which results in stratification. The strength of stratification substantially influences the transport of water parcels from the surface to the bottom of a lake. In recent years, the stratification in Lake Biwa—the largest freshwater lake in Japan—has been stronger. However, it is difficult to reproduce the stratification well in the simulations. In the present study, we built a hydrodynamic model for the purpose of analyzing the structure of the stratification in detail. Using the model, we evaluated the reproducibility of the seasonal and annual changes of vertical water distribution and flow field in Lake Biwa from 2007 to 2011. The hydrodynamic model results show that the vertical water distribution approximately agrees with the field observations based on the statistical analysis. The seasonal change of thermal stratification is reasonably reproduced by the hydrodynamic model simulations. In the simulation, there are mainly two circulation flows at the surface layer of the lake. The first flows anticlockwise and the second flows clockwise in the northern part of Lake Biwa. In order to compensate for the surface water flow, the water under the thermocline sometimes flows in the opposite direction under each circulation flow.

This study utilized the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 3.5.1 to evaluate the impact of urbanization on summertime precipitation in Osaka, Japan. The evaluation was conducted by comparing the WRF simulations with the present land use and no-urban land use (replacing “Urban” with “Paddy”) for August from 2006 to 2010. The urbanization increased mean air temperature by 2.1°C in urban areas because of increased sensible heat flux and decreased mean humidity by 0.8 g kg−1 because of decreased latent heat flux. In addition, the urbanization increased duration of the southwesterly sea breeze. The urbanization increased precipitation in urban areas and decreased in the surrounding areas. The mean precipitation in urban areas was increased by 20 mm month−1 (27% of the total amount without the synoptic-scale precipitation). The precipitation increase was generally due to the enhancement of the formation and development of convective clouds by the increase in sensible heat flux during afternoon and evening time periods. The urbanization in Osaka changes spatial and temporal distribution patterns of precipitation and evaporation, and consequently it substantially affects the water cycle in and around the urban areas of Osaka.
