Abstract

Norm enforcement may be important for resolving conflicts and promoting cooperation. However, little is known about how preferred responses to norm violations vary across cultures and across domains. In a preregistered study of 57 countries (using convenience samples of 22,863 students and non-students), we measured perceptions of the appropriateness of various responses to a violation of a cooperative norm and to atypical social behaviors. Our findings highlight both cultural universals and cultural variation. We find a universal negative relation between appropriateness ratings of norm violations and appropriateness ratings of responses in the form of confrontation, social ostracism and gossip. Moreover, we find the country variation in the appropriateness of sanctions to be consistent across different norm violations but not across different sanctions. Specifically, in those countries where use of physical confrontation and social ostracism is rated as less appropriate, gossip is rated as more appropriate. Little is known about people's preferred responses to norm violations across countries. Abstract

Summary: White bass (Morone chrysops), striped bass and their interspecific hybrid are important game fishes, whereas the hybrid striped bass is an important aquaculture species in the US. Numerous state, federal and private hatcheries, therefore, rear these species for stocking purposes as well as for food fish. Although striped bass populations (both wild and domesticated) have been extensively evaluated, relatively little effort has been directed toward the study and improvement of white bass. In this study, we developed SNP resources to examine the genetic relationships among a long‐term domesticated white bass line and five potential founder stocks for selective breeding collected from drainages in Arkansas, Texas and Alabama. Using genotyping‐by‐sequencing, we generated 13 872 genome‐wide SNP loci across the six populations. Stringent filtering of SNP‐calling parameters identified 426 informative SNP loci. Population genetic and structure analyses using these loci revealed only moderate genetic differentiation between populations (global Fst = 0.083) and indicated two major genetic clusters. A final 57‐SNP assay was successfully designed and validated using the MassARRAY system. The developed SNP panel assigned 96 additional genotyped individuals to their population of origin with 100% accuracy. The SNP resources developed in this study should facilitate ongoing efforts in selective breeding and conservation of white bass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The cardiac surgical operating room (OR) is a complex environment in which highly trained subspecialists interact with each other using sophisticated equipment to care for patients with severe cardiac disease and significant comorbidities. Thousands of patient lives have been saved or significantly improved with the advent of modern cardiac surgery. Indeed, both mortality and morbidity for coronary artery bypass surgery have decreased during the past decade. Nonetheless, the highly skilled and dedicated personnel in cardiac ORs are human and will make errors. Abstract

A computational fluid dynamics code for application to traditional incompressible flow problems has been developed. The method is actually a slight compressibility approach which takes advantage of the bulk modulus and finite sound speed of all real fluids. The finite element numerical analog uses a dynamic differencing scheme based, in part, on a variational principle for computational fluid dynamics. The code was developed in order to study the feasibility of damping seals for high speed turbomachinery. Preliminary seal analyses have been performed.

Abstract

The concept of desired family size is widely accepted, and numerous studies have been undertaken to measure its level in certain population groups. The determination of desired family size has generally followed the direct question procedure through which the respondent states some whole number as representing her family size wishes at some specified period in her life. Limitations of this method have been recognized, and some research has been conducted toward the development of other techniques of measuring desired family size. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a method of estimating desired family size based on the concept of paired comparison, where the response is restricted in order to reduce respondent bias. Abstract

This paper seeks to achieve four goals, each of which forms the basis for a section in the presentation. First, the rationale of risk assessment is fully described. In this section, some of the necessary conditions are identified that make disease prediction worth pursuing. The second section discusses some essential background to the understanding of risk assessment in dentistry. In this segment, attention is focused on population-based and individual-based perspectives, alternative approaches to expressing health risk, and methods for comparing the predictive accuracy of alternative risk assessment models. The third section of the paper develops a conceptual framework for risk assessment in dentistry. Particular emphasis is devoted to the identification of risk factors and their incorporation into alternative statistical models. In the fourth section, empirical data are offered by which certain comparisons of the alternative risk models can be drawn. 41. Modification of Cotton Water Relations and Growth with Mepiquat Chloride1

Abstract

Manipulation of crop architecture through the use of chemical bioregulators suggests the potential to improve plant water use and production efficiency. A bioregulator, mepiquat chloride (1,1‐dimethyl piperidinium chloride), was evaluated in field grown cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.) during 1979, 1980, and 1981 to determine effects on several plant water relations parameters and crop development in a semiarid environment. All experiments were conducted on an Olton loam soil (fine, mixed, thermic family of Aridic Paleustolls). A broadcast, foliar application was made at the rate of 50 g active ingredient (a.i.)/ha during the early square (young floral bud) Stage. Increases in leaf water potential (Ψw), solute potential (Ψw), and turgor pressure (Ψp) in mepiquat chloride treated plants were recorded during midmorning and at daily minimum Ψw. The earliest Ψw increase wass measured 12 days after application. Changes in Ψw ranged from no significant differences to a 0.63 MPa increase in treated plants, 77 days after application under a high soil water level. Increased Ψs and Ψp in treated plants occurred most frequently during the midmorning period and increases Of 0.20 MPa were measured. Improvements in plant water status were not restricted to low soil water availability and occurred across a range of control Ψw from −1.43 to −3.43 MPa. Increased abaxial transpiration rate, associated with decreased diffusive resistance, was measured in treated plants, particularly during the afternoon. No difference in seasonal soil water extraction was measured between treatments, even in tests in which leaf area index (LAI) was reduced 33% by mepiquat chloride application. Leaf area index reductions were attributable to both fewer leaves per plant and reduced leaf size. Differences in the growth parameters between treated and untreated plants were most evident when conditions for growth were optimum. A maximum decrease in plant height of 25 cm was measured 43 days after application in a high soil water level experiment. Reductions of one to two mainstem nodes were measured in treated plants. The number of bolls per plant throughout the season was not altered by mepiquat chloride application, and there were no differences in lint yield as a result of treatment.

Abstract

Three diverse samples of men and women aged 35-64 years living in urban Poland, rural Poland, and the United States are described and subsequently analyzed using systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure separately as dependent variables in multiple regression. Several demographic, behavioral, and biologic factors are included in the models as independent variables. Heart rate, Quetelet index, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and the natural logarithm of triglycerides were statistically significant in accounting for variation in systolic pressure in men in all three samples, whereas only heart rate and Quetelet index were significant in women in all samples. In the analysis of diastolic pressure, Quetelet index, heart rate, and ethanol consumption were statistically significant in men in all three samples, while only Quetelet index and heart rate were significant in women in all samples.
