Abstract

Tribe Brassiceae The line of advancement was from Raphanus sativus (less advanced) to Eruca sativa (advanced) through the intermediate level (12 studied species). Eruca sativa exhibits number of advanced characters viz. dissected siphonostele, unsplitting sepal median bundles throughout, the petals vascular supply derived from complexes, the two outer staminal bundles arose from complex shared with nectaries and non-vascularized septum. Tribe Lepidieae Due to the small number of species, authors unreliably suggested that Coronopus didymus and Lepidium sativum, occupied an advanced level. Abstract

Tribe Anchonieae Matthiola incana, M. livida and M. longipetala exhibited number of primitive characters viz. continuous siphonostele, ramified sepal median bundles, sepal marginal bundles, dependent petal supply derived from one source (complex), six staminal bundles to six fertile stamens, outer staminal bundles from central stele, fused septum, lateral carpellary bundles derived from the central stele, many ovules and vascularized nectaries. This is in agreement withAl-Shehbaz (1989). For all the foregoing characters, tribe Anchonieae occupied a less advanced level (Figs 6; 7).

Abstract

A resemble in Acacia s.l. spp. morphology causes a great confusion about its identification. So, the current study's objectives are using morphological and molecular traits for accurate identification of Acacia s.l. taxa, assess the discrimination of the newly proposed genera of Vachellia and Senegalia and detect the genetic variations between studied taxa. The morphological characters of 24 taxa of genus Acacia s.l. were investigated with emphasis on seeds. DNA fingerprint and the genetic relationships among the studied taxa were investigated by using 10 (RAPD) and 10 (ISSR) markers that showed a relatively equal polymorphism (about 15%). RAPD marker generated a total of 395 fragments of which 64 bands were polymorphic, while ISSR primers generated a total of 314 fragments, 46 of them were polymorphic. The generated dendrogram that based on 893 traits divided the studied taxa of Acacia s.l. into two major groups; Acacia s.s. group and Vachellia group that containing Senegalia taxa. The complementary use of morphological and molecular data gave an accurate characterization and clear the genetic variation between studied taxa of Acacia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe molecular identification of different taxa of genus Acaciaplays a critical role to understand the evolutionary history of this important plant that has many medicinal and ecological benefits and distributed in many regions around the world (Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas). This is the first study that used DNA barcoding (rbcLand matK) with 24 taxa of genus Acaciacollected from Saudi Arabia for molecular identification, genetic resources preservation, detect genetic variations accompanied with a phylogenetic view and test the ability of DNA barcoding to segregate Senegaliaand Vachelliafrom AcaciaMill taxa. Results showed that the GC ratio and transition/transversion bias (R) of rbcL(1.25) was higher than matK(0.95). This study resulted in the re-definition of some previously recorded species of Acaciainto recently proposed genera,13 species under Vachelliaand 2 species under Senegalia.The aim of the present study is to assess the ability of rbcLand matKloci to recognize Senegaliaand Vachelliafrom other taxa of Acaciaand assess the evolutionary relationship among them. This work will help to determine the position of Acaciacollected from Saudi Arabia in the new generic classification and provide a clear view of the genetic relationships within the genera.
