1. A Modeling Framework for Equitable Deployment of Energy Storage in Disadvantaged Communities

Abstract: This paper provides an analytical framework to incorporate the deployment of behind-the-meter energy storage coupled with rooftop solar, and their associated revenue streams, in the context of equitable energy policy interventions. We propose an extension to the Justice40 optimization model by adding storage and incorporating more realistic solar compensation mechanisms, such as net-billing, which allows for temporal revenue differentiation and the economic viability of behind-the-meter energy storage devices. The extended model includes household-level PV plus storage co-deployment alongside existing interventions, such as weatherization, rooftop PV only, community solar, and community wind. From a modeling perspective, we propose a novel approximation method to represent storage operations and revenue streams without expanding the temporal dimension of model, thus maintaining its computational efficiency. The proposed model is validated using a case study in Wayne County, Michigan, involving 3,651 energy insecure households.

2. Impurity Parallel Velocity Gradient instability

Abstract: In magnetized plasmas, a radial gradient of parallel velocity, where parallel refers to the direction of magnetic field, can destabilise an electrostatic mode called as Parallel Velocity Gradient (PVG). The theory of PVG has been mainly developed assuming a single species of ions. Here, the role of impurities is investigated based on a linear, local analysis, in a homogeneous, constant magnetic field. To further simplify the analysis, the plasma is assumed to contain only two ion species - main ions and one impurity species - while our methodology can be straightforwardly extended to more species. In the cold-ion limit, retaining polarization drift for both main ions and impurity ions, and assuming Boltzmann electrons, the system is described by 4 fluid equations closed by quasi-neutrality. The linearized equations can be reduced to 2 coupled equations: one for the electric potential, and one for the effective parallel velocity fluctuations, which is a linear combination of main ion and impurity parallel velocity fluctuations. This reduced system can be understood as a generalisation of the Hasegawa-Mima model. With finite radial gradient of impurity parallel flow, the linear dispersion relation then describes a new instability: the impurity-modified PVG (i-PVG). Instability condition is described in terms of either the main ion flow shear, or equivalently, an effective flow shear, which combines main ion and impurity flow shears. Impurities can have a stabilising or destabilising role, depending on the parameters, and in particular the direction of main flow shear against impurity flow shear. Assuming a reasonable value of perpendicular wavenumber, the maximum growth rate is estimated, depending on impurity mass, charge, and concentration., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. 3. Magnetically Driven Turbulence in the Inner Regions of Protoplanetary Disks

Abstract: Given the important role turbulence plays in the settling and growth of dust grains in protoplanetary disks, it is crucial that we determine whether these disks are turbulent and to what extent. Protoplanetary disks are weakly ionized near the mid-plane, which has led to a paradigm in which largely laminar magnetic field structures prevail deeper in the disk, with angular momentum being transported via magnetically launched winds. Yet, there has been little exploration on the precise behavior of the gas within the bulk of the disk. We carry out 3D, local shearing box simulations that include all three low-ionization effects (Ohmic diffusion, ambipolar diffusion, and the Hall effect) to probe the nature of magnetically driven gas dynamics 1-30 AU from the central star. We find that gas turbulence can persist with a generous yet physically motivated ionization prescription (order unity Elsasser numbers). The gas velocity fluctuations range from 0.03-0.09 of the sound speed $c_s$ at the disk mid-plane to $\sim c_s$ near the disk surface, and are dependent on the initial magnetic field strength. However, the turbulent velocities do not appear to be strongly dependent on the field polarity, and thus appear to be insensitive to the Hall effect. The mid-plane turbulence has the potential to drive dust grains to collision velocities exceeding their fragmentation limit, and likely reduces the efficacy of particle clumping in the mid-plane, though it remains to be seen if this level of turbulence persists in disks with lower ionization levels., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

4. Modeling the secular evolution of embedded protoplanetary discs

Abstract: Context: Protoplanetary discs are known to form around nascent stars from their parent molecular cloud as a result of angular momentum conservation. As they progressively evolve and dissipate, they also form planets. While a lot of modeling efforts have been dedicated to their formation, the question of their secular evolution, from the so-called class 0 embedded phase to the class II phase where discs are believed to be isolated, remains poorly understood. Aims: We aim to explore the evolution between the embedded stages and the class II stage. We focus on the magnetic field evolution and the long-term interaction between the disc and the envelope. Methods: We use the GPU-accelerated code \textsc{Idefix} to perform a 3D, barotropic, non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) secular core collapse simulation that covers the system evolution from the collapse of the pre-stellar core until 100 kyr after the first hydrostatic core formation and the disc settling while ensuring sufficient vertical and azimuthal resolutions (down to $10^{-2}$ au) to properly resolve the disc internal dynamics and non-axisymmetric perturbations. Results: The disc evolution leads to a power-law gas surface density in Keplerian rotation that extends up to a few 10 au. The magnetic flux trapped in the disc during the initial collapse decreases from 100 mG at disc formation down to 1 mG by the end of the simulation. After the formation of the first hydrostatic core, the system evolves in three phases. A first phase with a small ($\sim 10$ au), unstable, strongly accreting ($\sim10^{-5}$ $\mathrm{M_\odot \, yr^{-1}}$) disc that loses magnetic flux over the first 15 kyr, a second phase where the magnetic flux is advected with a smooth, expanding disc fed by the angular momentum of the infalling material..., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Changes in body perception influence behavior and emotion and can be induced through multisensory feedback. Auditory feedback to one's actions can trigger such alterations; however, it is unclear which individual factors modulate these effects. We employ and evaluate SoniWeight Shoes, a wearable device based on literature for altering one's weight perception through manipulated footstep sounds. In a healthy population sample across a spectrum of individuals (n=84) with varying degrees of eating disorder symptomatology, physical activity levels, body concerns, and mental imagery capacities, we explore the effects of three sound conditions (low-frequency, high-frequency and control) on extensive body perception measures (demographic, behavioral, physiological, psychological, and subjective). Analyses revealed an impact of individual differences in each of these dimensions. Besides replicating previous findings, we reveal and highlight the role of individual differences in body perception, offering avenues for personalized sonification strategies. 6. Genomic variation of European beech reveals signals of local adaptation despite high levels of phenotypic plasticity

Abstract: Abstract Local adaptation is key for ecotypic differentiation and species evolution. Understanding underlying genomic patterns can allow the prediction of future maladaptation and ecosystem stability. Here, we report the whole-genome resequencing of 874 individuals from 100 range-wide populations of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), an important forest tree species in Europe. We show that genetic variation closely mirrors geography with a clear pattern of isolation-by-distance. Genome-wide analyses for genotype-environment associations (GEAs) identify relatively few potentially adaptive variants after correcting for an overwhelming signal of statistically significant but non-causal GEAs. We characterize the single high confidence genomic region and pinpoint a candidate gene possibly involved in winter temperature adaptation via modulation of spring phenology. Surprisingly, allelic variation at this locus does not result in any apparent fitness differences in a common garden. More generally, reciprocal transplant experiments across large climate distances suggest extensive phenotypic plasticity. Nevertheless, we find indications of polygenic adaptation which may be essential in natural ecosystems. This polygenic signal exhibits broad- and fine-scale variation across the landscape, highlighting the relevance of spatial resolution. In summary, our results emphasize the importance, but also exemplify the complexity, of employing natural genetic variation for forest conservation under climate change.

7. Apelin-13 administration allows for norepinephrine sparing in a rat model of cecal ligation and puncture-induced septic shock

Abstract: Abstract Background Infusion of exogenous catecholamines (i.e., norepinephrine [NE] and dobutamine) is a recommended treatment for septic shock with myocardial dysfunction. However, sustained catecholamine infusion is linked to cardiac toxicity and impaired responsiveness. Several pre-clinical and clinical studies have investigated the use of alternative vasopressors in the treatment of septic shock, with limited benefits and generally no effect on mortality. Apelin-13 (APL-13) is an endogenous positive inotrope and vasoactive peptide and has been demonstrated cardioprotective with vasomodulator and sparing life effects in animal models of septic shock. A primary objective of this study was to evaluate the NE-sparing effect of APL-13 infusion in an experimental sepsis-induced hypotension. Methods For this goal, sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in male rats and the arterial blood pressure (BP) monitored continuously via a carotid catheter. Monitoring, fluid resuscitation and experimental treatments were performed on conscious animals. Based on pilot assays, normal saline fluid resuscitation (2.5 mL/Kg/h) was initiated 3 h post-CLP and maintained up to the endpoint. Thus, titrated doses of NE, with or without fixed-doses of APL-13 or the apelin receptor antagonist F13A co-infusion were started when 20% decrease of systolic BP (SBP) from baseline was achieved, to restore SBP values ≥ 115 ± 1.5 mmHg (baseline average ± SEM). Results A reduction in mean NE dose was observed with APL-13 but not F13A co-infusion at pre-determined treatment time of 4.5 ± 0.5 h (17.37 ± 1.74 µg/Kg/h [APL-13] vs. 25.64 ± 2.61 µg/Kg/h [Control NE] vs. 28.60 ± 4.79 µg/Kg/min [F13A], P = 0.0491). A 60% decrease in NE infusion rate over time was observed with APL-13 co-infusion, (p = 0.008 vs NE alone), while F13A co-infusion increased the NE infusion rate over time by 218% (p = 0.003 vs NE + APL-13). 8. Planet-disk-wind interaction: the magnetized fate of protoplanets

Abstract: Models of planet-disk interaction are mainly based on 2D and 3D viscous hydrodynamical simulations. Accretion is classically prescribed by an alpha parameter which characterizes the turbulent radial transport of angular momentum (AM) in the disk. This accretion scenario has been questioned for a few years and an alternative paradigm has been proposed that involves the vertical transport of AM by MHD winds. We revisit planet-disk interaction in such context, with a focus on the planet's ability to open a gap and produce meridional flows. Accretion, magnetic field and wind torque in the gap are also explored, as well as the gravitational torque exerted by the disk onto the planet. We carry out high-resolution 3D global non-ideal MHD simulations of a gaseous disk threaded by a large-scale vertical magnetic field harboring a planet in a fixed circular orbit using the GPU-accelerated code Idefix. We consider various planet masses and disk magnetizations. We find that gap-opening always occurs for sufficiently massive planets, with deeper gaps when the planet mass increases and when the initial magnetization decreases. We propose a gap opening criterion when accretion is dominated by MHD winds. We show that accretion is unsteady and comes from surface layers in the outer disk, bringing material directly towards the planet poles. A planet gap is a privileged region for magnetic field accumulation, leading to nearly sonic accretion stream through the gap. For massive planets, the wind torque induces an asymmetric gap, both in depth and in width, that gradually erodes the outer gap edge, reducing the outer Lindblad torque and potentially reversing the migration direction of Jovian planets in magnetized disks after a few hundreds of orbits. For low-mass planets, we find strongly fluctuating gravitational torques that are mostly positive on average, indicating a stochastic outward migration.

9. FU Orionis disk outburst: evidence for a gravitational instability scenario triggered in a magnetically dead zone

Abstract: Context: FUors outbursts are a crucial stage of accretion in young stars. However a complete mechanism at the origin of the outburst still remains missing. Aims: We aim at constraining the instability mechanism in FU Orionis star itself, by directly probing the size and the evolution in time of the outburst region with near-infrared interferometry, and to confront it to physical models of this region. Methods: FU Orionis has been a regular target of near-infrared interferometry. In this paper, we analyze more than 20 years of interferometric observations to perform a temporal monitoring of the region of the outburst, and compare it to the spatial structure deduced from 1D MHD simulations. Results: We measure from the interferometric observations that the size variation of the outburst region is compatible with a constant or slightly decreasing size over time in the H and K band. The temporal variation and the mean sizes are consistently reproduced by our 1D MHD simulations. We find that the most compatible scenario is a model of an outburst occurring in a magnetically layered disk, where a Magneto-Rotational Instability (MRI) is triggered by a Gravitational Instability (GI) at the outer edge of a dead-zone. The scenario of a pure Thermal Instability (TI) fails to reproduce our interferometric sizes since it can only be sustained in a very compact zone of the disk <0.1 AU. The scenario of MRI-GI could be compatible with an external perturbation enhancing the GI, such as tidal interactions with a stellar companion, or a planet at the outer edge of the dead-zone. Conclusions: The layered disk model driven by MRI turbulence is favored to interpret the spatial structure and temporal evolution of FU Orionis outburst region. 10. Spiral-wave-driven accretion in quiescent dwarf nov{\ae}

Abstract: In dwarf nov{\ae} and low-mass X-ray binaries, the tidal potential excites spiral waves in the accretion disc. Spiral wave driven accretion may be important in quiescent discs, where the angular momentum transport mechanism has yet to be identified. Previous studies were limited to unrealistically high temperatures for numerical studies or to specific regimes for analytical studies. We perform the first numerical simulation of spiral wave driven accretion in the cold temperature regime appropriate to quiescent discs, which have Mach numbers > 100. We use the new GPU-accelerated finite volume code Idefix to produce global hydrodynamics 2D simulations of the accretion discs of dwarf nov{\ae} systems with a fine-enough spatial resolution to capture the short scale-height of cold, quiescent discs with Mach numbers ranging from 80 to 370. Running the simulations on timescales of tens of binary orbits shows transient angular momentum transport that decays as the disc relaxes from its initial conditions. We find the angular momentum parameter {\alpha} drops to values << 0.01 , too weak to drive accretion in quiescence.

11. IDEFIX: a versatile performance-portable Godunov code for astrophysical flows

Abstract: Exascale super-computers now becoming available rely on hybrid energy-efficient architectures that involve an accelerator such as Graphics Processing Units (GPU). Leveraging the computational power of these machines often means a significant rewrite of the numerical tools each time a new architecture becomes available. To address these issues, we present Idefix, a new code for astrophysical flows that relies on the Kokkos meta-programming library to guarantee performance portability on a wide variety of architectures while keeping the code as simple as possible for the user. Idefix is based on a Godunov finite-volume method that solves the non-relativistic HD and MHD equations on various grid geometries. Idefix includes a wide choice of solvers and several additional modules (constrained transport, orbital advection, non-ideal MHD) allowing users to address complex astrophysical problems. Idefix has been successfully tested on Intel and AMD CPUs (up to 131 072 CPU cores on Irene-Rome at TGCC) as well as NVidia and AMD GPUs (up to 1024 GPUs on Adastra at CINES). Idefix achieves more than 1e8 cell/s in MHD on a single NVidia V100 GPU and 3e11 cell/s on 256 Adastra nodes (1024 GPUs) with 95% parallelization efficiency (compared to a single node). For the same problem, Idefix is up to 6 times more energy efficient on GPUs compared to Intel Cascade Lake CPUs. 12. Self-consistent gyrokinetic modelling of turbulent and neoclassical tungsten transport in toroidally rotating plasmas

Abstract: The effect of toroidal rotation on both turbulent and neoclassical transport of tungsten (W) in tokamaks is investigated using the flux-driven, global, nonlinear 5D gyrokinetic code GYSELA. Nonlinear simulations are carried out with different levels of momentum injection that drive W to the supersonic regime, while the toroidal velocity of the main ions remains in the subsonic regime. The numerical simulations demonstrate that toroidal rotation induces centrifugal forces that cause W to accumulate in the outboard region, generating an in-out poloidal asymmetry. This asymmetry enhances neoclassical inward convection, which can lead to central accumulation of W in cases of strong plasma rotation. The core accumulation of W is mainly driven by inward neoclassical convection. However, as momentum injection continues, roto-diffusion, proportional to the radial gradient of the toroidal velocity, becomes significant and generate outward turbulent flux in the case of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence. 13. Whole-genome screening for near-diagnostic genetic markers for four western European white oak species identification

Abstract: Abstract Key message Mining genome-wide DNA sequences enabled the discovery of near-diagnostic markers for species assignment in four European white oaks (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Quercus pubescens Willd., Quercus pyrenaica Willd., and Quercus robur L.) despite their low interspecific differentiation. Near-diagnostic markers are almost fully fixed in one species and absent in the three others. As a result, only a handful of markers are needed for species identification, making this genetic assay a very promising operational taxonomic assignment procedure in research and forestry. Context Identifying species in the European white oak complex has been a long-standing concern in taxonomy, evolution, forest research, and management. Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Q. robur L., Q. pubescens Willd., and Q. pyrenaica Willd. are part of this species complex in western temperate Europe and hybridize in mixed stands, challenging species identification. Aims Our aim was to identify near-diagnostic single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for each of the four species that are suitable for routine use and rapid diagnosis in research and applied forestry. Methods We first scanned existing whole-genome and target-capture data sets in a reduced number of samples (training set) to identify candidate diagnostic SNPs, i.e., genomic positions being characterized by a reference allele in one species and by the alternative allele in all other species. Allele frequencies of the candidates SNPs were then explored in a larger, range-wide sample of populations in each species (validation step). Results We found a subset of 38 SNPs (10 for Q. petraea, 7 for Q. pubescens, 9 for Q. pyrenaica, and 12 for Q. robur) that showed near-diagnostic features across their species distribution ranges with Q. pyrenaica and Q. pubescens exhibiting the highest (0.876) and lowest (0.747) diagnosticity, respectively. Conclusions We provide a new, efficient, and reliable molecular tool for the identification of the species Q. petraea, Q. robur, Q. pubescens, and Q. pyrenaica, which can be used as a routine tool in forest research and management. This study highlights the resolution offered by whole-genome sequencing data to design near-diagnostic marker sets for taxonomic assignment, even for species complexes with relatively low differentiation.

14. Particle dynamics in a turbulent electric field

Abstract: Charged particle velocity-space diffusion in a prescribed one-dimensional turbulent electric field is investigated through numerical trajectories in phase-space and compared against quasi-linear theory (QL), including resonance broadening (RB). A Gaussian spectrum electric field of variable amplitude E is studied in conjunction with two plasma dispersion relations, namely, the Langmuir and ion-acoustic dispersion. A first parameter scan shows that RB effects become significant for a Kubo number K of a few percent. A Kubo number scan shows that diffusion increases as a power law of D∝K3∝E3/2 for large Kubo numbers. Moreover, at large Kubo numbers, transport processes include significant diffusion measured at velocities much higher than the resonant region, where QL and RB predict negligible diffusion. For times much larger than the trapped particle flight time τb and the autocorrelation time τ0, the velocity distribution departs from a Gaussian. Nevertheless, measurements show that the variance increases linearly in time, with a Hurst parameter of H∼0.5, where the diffusion scales as K5/2∝E5/4 and K3/2∝E3/4 for small and large Kubo number, respectively.

15. Global linear stability analysis of kinetic Trapped Ion Mode (TIM) turbulence in tokamak plasma using spectral method

Abstract: Trapped ion modes (TIM) belong to the family of ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes, which are one of the important ingredients in heat turbulent transport at the ion scale in tokamak plasmas. It is essential to properly estimate their linear growth rate to understand their influence on ion-scale turbulent transport. A global linear analysis of a reduced gyro-bounce kinetic model for trapped particle modes is performed, and a spectral method is proposed to solve the dispersion relation. Importantly, the radial profile of the particle drift velocity is taken into account in the linear analysis by considering the magnetic flux {\psi} dependency of the equilibrium Hamiltonian H_{eq}({\psi}) in the quasi-neutrality equation and equilibrium gyro-bounce averaged distribution function F_{eq} . Using this spectral method, linear growth-rates of TIM instability in presence of different temperature profiles and precession frequencies of trapped ions, with an approximated constant Hamiltonian and the exact {\psi} dependent equilibrium Hamiltonian, are investigated. The growth-rate depends on the logarithmic gradient of temperature \kappa_{T} , density \kappa_{n} and equilibrium Hamiltonian \kappa_{\Lambda} . With the exact {\psi} dependent Hamiltonian, the growth rates and potential profiles are modified significantly, compared to the cases with approximated constant Hamiltonian. All the results from the global linear analysis agree with a semi-Lagrangian based linear Vlasov solver with a good accuracy. This spectral method is very fast and requires very less computation resources compared to a linear version of Vlasov-solver based on a semi-Lagrangian scheme.

18. Magnetised Winds in Transition Discs I: 2.5D Global Simulations

Abstract: Protoplanetary discs (PPDs) are cold, dense and weakly ionised environments that witness the planetary formation. Among these discs, transition discs (TDs) are characterised by a wide cavity in the dust and gas distribution. Despite this lack of material, many TDs strongly accrete onto their central star, possibly indicating that a mechanism is driving fast accretion in TDs cavities. The presence of radially extended 'dead zones' in PPDs recently revived the interest in magnetised disc winds (MDWs), where accretion is driven by a large magnetic field. We propose that TDs could be subject to similar winds, explaining their fast-accreting and long-lived cavities. We present the results of the first 2.5D global numerical simulations of TDs harbouring MDWs using the PLUTO code. We impose a cavity in the gas distribution and consider a power law distribution for the large-scale magnetic field strength. We assume weakly ionised discs subject to ambipolar diffusion, as expected in this range of densities and temperatures. Our simulated TDs reach a steady state with an inner cavity and an outer 'standard' disc. The accretion rates remain approximately constant through the entire discs, reaching $10^{-7}~M_\odot/\text{yrs}^{-1}$ for typical surface density values. The MDW launched from the cavity is more magnetised with a much larger lever arm than the MDW launched from the outer disc. The material in the cavity is accreted at sonic velocities, and the cavity itself is rotating at 70% of the Keplerian velocity due to the efficient magnetic braking imposed by the MDW. Overall, our cavity matches the dynamical properties of an inner jet emitting disc (JED) and of magnetically arrested discs (MADs) in black hole physics. Abstract: Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Abstract: Abstract Effective population size (Ne) is a pivotal evolutionary parameter with crucial implications in conservation practice and policy. Genetic methods to estimate Ne have been preferred over demographic methods because they rely on genetic data rather than time‐consuming ecological monitoring. Methods based on linkage disequilibrium (LD), in particular, have become popular in conservation as they require a single sampling and provide estimates that refer to recent generations. A software program based on the LD method, GONE, looks particularly promising to estimate contemporary and recent‐historical Ne (up to 200 generations in the past). Genomic datasets from non‐model species, especially plants, may present some constraints to the use of GONE, as linkage maps and reference genomes are seldom available, and SNP genotyping is usually based on reduced‐representation methods. In this study, we use empirical datasets from four plant species to explore the limitations of plant genomic datasets when estimating Ne using the algorithm implemented in GONE, in addition to exploring some typical biological limitations that may affect Ne estimation using the LD method, such as the occurrence of population structure. We show how accuracy and precision of Ne estimates potentially change with the following factors: occurrence of missing data, limited number of SNPs/individuals sampled, and lack of information about the location of SNPs on chromosomes, with the latter producing a significant bias, previously unexplored with empirical data. We finally compare the Ne estimates obtained with GONE for the last generations with the contemporary Ne estimates obtained with the programs currentNe and NeEstimator.

Abstract: The building of planetary systems is controlled by the gas and dust dynamics of protoplanetary disks. While the gas is simultaneously accreted onto the central star and dissipated away by winds, dust grains aggregate and collapse to form planetesimals and eventually planets. This dust and gas dynamics involves instabilities, turbulence and complex non-linear interactions which ultimately control the observational appearance and the secular evolution of these disks. This chapter is dedicated to the most recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics of gaseous and dusty disks, covering hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, gas-dust instabilities, dust clumping and disk winds. Abstract: PurposeWe aimed to characterize long-term quality of life (QOL) trajectories among patients with breast cancer treated with adjuvant chemotherapy and to identify related patterns of health behaviors.MethodsFemale stage I-III breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in CANTO (CANcer TOxicity; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01993498) were included. Trajectories of QOL (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 Summary Score) and associations with trajectory group membership were identified by iterative estimations of group-based trajectory models and multivariable multinomial logistic regression, respectively.ResultsFour trajectory groups were identified (N = 4,131): excellent (51.7%), very good (31.7%), deteriorating (10.0%), and poor (6.6%) QOL. The deteriorating trajectory group reported fairly good baseline QOL (mean [95% CI], 78.3/100 [76.2 to 80.5]), which significantly worsened at year-1 (58.1/100 [56.4 to 59.9]) and never recovered to pretreatment values through year-4 (61.1/100 [59.0 to 63.3]) postdiagnosis. Healthy behaviors were associated with better performing trajectory groups. Obesity (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] v lean, 1.51 [95% CI, 1.28 to 1.79]; P < .0001) and current smoking (aOR v never, 1.52 [95% CI, 1.27 to 1.82]; P < .0001) at diagnosis were associated with membership to the deteriorating group, which was also characterized by a higher prevalence of patients with excess body weight and insufficient physical activity through year-4 and by frequent exposure to tobacco smoking during chemotherapy. Additional factors associated with membership to the deteriorating group included younger age (aOR, 1-year decrement 1.01 [95% CI, 1.01 to 1.02]; P = .043), comorbidities (aOR v no, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.06 to 1.40]; P = .005), lower income (aOR v wealthier households, 1.21 [95% CI, 1.07 to 1.37]; P = .002), and endocrine therapy (aOR v no, 1.14 [95% CI, 1.01 to 1.30]; P = .047).ConclusionThis latent-class analysis identified some patients with upfront poor QOL and a high-risk cluster with severe, persistent postchemotherapy QOL deterioration. Screening relevant patient-level characteristics may inform tailored interventions to mitigate the detrimental impact of chemotherapy and preserve QOL, including early addressal of behavioral concerns and provision of healthy lifestyle support programs.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity is associated with improved symptom control in patients with breast cancer but its association with chemotherapy completion or response is unclear. METHODS: Using a prospective design, 1075 breast cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy between March 2012 and February 2017 were studied. Physical activity was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire [GPAQ-16], quantified in standardised MET-h/wk. Chemotherapy completion was defined as the proportion of patients completing planned treatment course, requiring dose reduction, or requiring dose delay. Response was evaluated by pathologic complete response (pCR). Associations between physical activity and primary outcomes were assessed using multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS: There was no differences between any chemotherapy completion outcome on the basis of physical activity classification. The percent of patients not completing planned treatment was 5.7% for ≦0.33 MET-h/wk, compared with 6.8% for 0.34-16.65 MET-h/wk, and 4.6% for ≥16.6 MET-h/wk (p = 0.52). No significant relationships were observed between physical activity dose classification and pCR for the overall cohort or upon stratification by clinical subtype. CONCLUSION: Future studies are required to further investigate the relationship between pre-treatment levels of physical activity and function on treatment completion and response in breast and other cancer populations. 25. Rapid Variations of Earth's Core Magnetic Field

Abstract: Evidence of fast variations in the Earth's core field are seen both in magnetic observatory and satellite records. We present here how they have been identified at the Earth's surface from ground-based observatory records and how their spatio-temporal structure is now characterised by satellite data. It is shown how their properties at the core mantle boundary are extracted through localised and global modelling processes, paying particular attention to their time scales. Finally are listed possible types of waves in the liquid outer core, together with their main properties, that may give rise to these observed fast variations.

Abstract: Summary: Modeling tumor metabolism in vitro remains challenging. Here, we used galactose as an in vitro tool compound to mimic glycolytic limitation. In contrast to the established idea that high glycolytic flux reduces pyruvate kinase isozyme M2 (PKM2) activity to support anabolic processes, we have discovered that glycolytic limitation also affects PKM2 activity. Surprisingly, despite limited carbon availability and energetic stress, cells induce a near-complete block of PKM2 to divert carbons toward serine metabolism. Simultaneously, TCA cycle flux is sustained, and oxygen consumption is increased, supported by glutamine. Glutamine not only supports TCA cycle flux but also serine synthesis via distinct mechanisms that are directed through PKM2 inhibition. Finally, deleting mitochondrial one-carbon (1C) cycle reversed the PKM2 block, suggesting a potential formate-dependent crosstalk that coordinates mitochondrial 1C flux and cytosolic glycolysis to support cell survival and proliferation during nutrient-scarce conditions.

Abstract: Abstract Background The American Bashkir Curly Horse is frequently advertised to horse‐allergic riders and claimed to be a so‐called hypoallergenic breed that elicits fewer symptoms. Previous studies quantifying selected allergens in different breeds did not find a reduced allergen content in Curly Horses. Here, we provide a comprehensive proteomic analysis of horse hair extracts and a molecular analysis of the major allergen Equ c 1 with the aim of identifying differences in the Curly Horse breed that might explain their presumed reduced allergenic potential. Methods Horse hair extracts were prepared from Curly and American Quarter Horse breeds, separated by gender and castration status, extracts from other breeds served as controls. Extracts and native Equ c 1 (nEqu c 1) were analyzed by mass spectrometry. IgE‐binding capacities of nEqu c 1 and its recombinant variants were tested by ELISA using sera of patients sensitized to horses. Structures and ligand binding abilities were analyzed by computational modeling and fluorescence quenching assays. Results All known respiratory horse allergens are present in hair extracts of Curly and Quarter Horses and share identical allergen‐specific peptides. Lipocalin allergens are the most abundant proteins in horse hair extracts and contain several post‐translational modifications. We identified two new variants of Equ c 1 that have similar IgE‐binding capacities but show structural differences in their binding cavities and altered ligand binding behavior. There are no differences in IgE‐binding of Equ c 1 derived from Curly Horses compared to other horse breeds. Conclusion Our data do not support the claim that Curly Horses are less allergenic than other breeds.

30. Gravito-turbulence and dynamo in poorly ionised protostellar discs. I. Zero-net-flux case

Abstract: In their early stages, protoplanetary discs are sufficiently massive to undergo gravitational instability (GI). This instability is thought to be involved in mass accretion, planet formation via gas fragmentation, the generation of spiral density waves, and outbursts. A key and very recent area of research is the interaction between the GI and magnetic fields in young protoplanetary discs, in particular whether this instability is able to sustain a magnetic field via a dynamo. We conduct three-dimensional, stratified shearing-box simulations using two independent codes, PLUTO and Athena++, to characterise the GI dynamo in poorly ionised protostellar discs subject to ambipolar diffusion. We find that the dynamo operates across a large range of ambipolar Elssaser number Am (which characterises the strength of ambipolar diffusion) and is particularly strong in the regime Am=10-100, with typical magnetic to thermal energy ratios of order unity. The dynamo is only weakly dependent on resolution (at least for Am <100), box size, and cooling law. The magnetic field is produced by the combination of differential rotation and large-scale vertical roll motions associated with spiral density waves. 34. A systematic description of wind-driven protoplanetary discs

Abstract: (shortened) Planet forming discs are believed to be very weakly turbulent in the regions outside of 1 AU. For this reason, it is now believed that magnetized winds could be the dominant mechanism driving accretion in these systems. However, there is today no self-consistent way to describe discs subject to a magnetized wind, in a way similar to the $\alpha$ disc model. In this article, I explore in a systematic way the parameter space of wind-driven protoplanetary discs and present scaling laws which can be used in reduced models \`a la alpha-disc. Methods: I compute a series of self-similar wind solutions, assuming the disc is dominated by ambipolar and Ohmic diffusions. These solution are obtained by looking for stationary solutions in the finite-volume code PLUTO using a relaxation method and continuation. Results: Self-similar solutions are obtained for values of plasma beta ranging from 10^2 to 10^8, for several Ohmic and ambipolar diffusion strengths. Mass accretions rates of the order of 10^{-8} Msun/yr are obtained for poloidal field strength beta=O(10^4) or equivalently 1 mG at 10 AU. The resulting magnetic lever arms are typically lower than 2, possibly reaching 1.5 in weakest field cases. Finally, I provide a complete set of scaling laws and semi-analytical wind solutions, which can be used to fit and interpret observations. Conclusions: Magnetized winds are unavoidable in protoplanetary discs as soon as they are embedded in an ambient poloidal magnetic field. Abstract: Astrophysical disks are likely embedded in an ambient vertical magnetic field. This ambient field is known to drive magneto-rotational turbulence in the disk bulk but is also responsible for the launching of magnetized outflows at the origin of astrophysical jets. The vertical structure and long-term (secular) evolution of such a system lack quantitative predictions. It is nevertheless this secular evolution that is proposed to explain time variability in many accreting systems such as X-ray binaries. We compute and analyze global 3D ideal-MHD simulations of an accretion disk threaded by a large-scale magnetic field. We evaluate the role of the turbulent terms in the equilibrium of the system. We then compute the transport of mass, angular momentum, and magnetic fields in the disk to characterize its secular evolution. We perform a parameter survey to characterize the influence of disk properties on secular transport. We find that weakly magnetized disks drive jets that carry away a small fraction of the disk angular momentum. The mass-weighted accretion speed remains subsonic although, there is always an upper turbulent atmospheric region where transonic accretion takes place. We show that a strongly magnetized version of the magneto-rotational instability drives this turbulence. The disk structure is drastically different from the conventional hydrostatic picture. The magnetic field is always dragged inwards in the disk, at a velocity that increases with the disk magnetization. Beyond a threshold on the latter, the disk undergoes a profound radial readjustment. It leads to the formation of an inner accretion-ejection region with a supersonic mass-weighted accretion speed and where the magnetic field distribution becomes steady, near equipartition with the thermal pressure. Abstract: This paper demonstrates a system capable of combining a sparse, indirect, monocular visual SLAM, with both offline and real-time Multi-View Stereo (MVS) reconstruction algorithms. This combination overcomes many obstacles encountered by autonomous vehicles or robots employed in agricultural environments, such as overly repetitive patterns, need for very detailed reconstructions, and abrupt movements caused by uneven roads. Furthermore, the use of a monocular SLAM makes our system much easier to integrate with an existing device, as we do not rely on a LiDAR (which is expensive and power consuming), or stereo camera (whose calibration is sensitive to external perturbation e.g. camera being displaced). To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first evaluation results for monocular SLAM, and our work further explores unsupervised depth estimation on this specific application scenario by simulating RGB-D SLAM to tackle the scale ambiguity, and shows our approach produces reconstructions that are helpful to various agricultural tasks. Abstract: It has been shown that observing a face being touched or moving in synchrony with our own face increases self-identification with the former which might alter both cognitive and affective processes. The induction of this phenomenon, termed enfacement illusion, has often relied on laboratory tools that are unavailable to a large audience. However, digital face filters applications are nowadays regularly used and might provide an interesting tool to study similar mechanisms in a wider population. Digital filters are able to render our faces in real time while changing important facial features, for example, rendering them more masculine or feminine according to normative standards. Recent literature using full-body illusions has shown that participants' own gender identity shifts when embodying a different gendered avatar. Here we studied whether participants' filtered faces, observed while moving in synchrony with their own face, may induce an enfacement illusion and if so, modulate their gender identity. We collected data from 35 female and 33 male participants who observed a stereotypically gender mismatched version of themselves either moving synchronously or asynchronously with their own face on a screen. Our findings showed a successful induction of the enfacement illusion in the synchronous condition according to a questionnaire addressing the feelings of ownership, agency and perceived similarity. However, we found no evidence of gender identity being modulated, neither in explicit nor in implicit measures of gender identification. We discuss the distinction between full-body and facial processing and the relevance of studying widely accessible devices that may impact the sense of a bodily self and our cognition, emotion and behaviour.

Abstract: We analyze a sample of 12 HST-selected edge-on protoplanetary disks for which the vertical extent of the emission layers can be constrained directly. We present ALMA high angular resolution continuum images (0.1arcsec) of these disks at two wavelengths, 0.89mm and 2.06mm (respectively ALMA bands 7 and 4), supplemented with archival band 6 data (1.33mm) where available. For most sources, the millimeter continuum emission is more compact than the scattered light, both in the vertical and radial directions. Six sources are resolved along their minor axis in at least one millimeter band, providing direct information on the vertical distribution of the millimeter grains. For the second largest disk of the sample, the significant difference in vertical extent between band 7 and band 4 suggests efficient size-selective vertical settling of large grains. Furthermore, the only Class I object in our sample shows evidence of flaring in the millimeter. Along the major axis, all disks are well resolved. Four of them are larger in band 7 than in band 4 in the radial direction, and three have a similar radial extent in all bands. For all disks, we also derive the millimeter brightness temperature and spectral index maps. We find that the disks are likely optically thick and that the dust emission reveals low brightness temperatures in most cases (<10K). The integrated spectral indices are similar to those of disks at lower inclination. The comparison of a generic radiative transfer disk model with our data shows that at least 3 disks are consistent with a small millimeter dust scale height, of a few au (measured at r=100au). This is in contrast with the more classical value of h_g\sim10au derived from scattered light images and from gas line measurements. Abstract: Protoplanetary discs are made of gas and dust orbiting a young star. They are also the birth place of planetary systems, which motivates a large amount of observational and theoretical research. In these lecture notes, I present a review of the magnetic mechanisms applied to the outer regions R>1 AU of these discs, which are the planet-formation regions. In contrast to usual astrophysical plasmas, the gas in these regions is noticeably cold (T<300 K) and dense, which implies a very low ionisation fraction close to the disc midplane. In these notes, I deliberately ignore the innermost R~0.1 AU region which is influenced by the star-disk interaction and various radiative effects. I start by presenting a short overview of the observational evidence for the dynamics of these objects. I then introduce the methods and approximations used to model these plasmas, including non-ideal MHD, and the uncertainties associated with this approach. In this framework, I explain how the global dynamics of these discs is modelled, and I present a stability analysis of this plasma in the local approximation, introducing the non-ideal magneto-rotational instability. Following this mostly analytical part, I discuss numerical models which have been used to describe the saturation mechanisms of this instability, and the formation of large-scale structures by various saturation mechanisms. Finally, I show that local numerical models are insufficient since magnetised winds are also emitted from the surface of these objects. Abstract: Dwarf novae (DNe) and low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) show eruptions that are thought to be due to a thermal-viscous instability in their accretion disk. These eruptions provide constraints on angular momentum transport mechanisms. We explore the idea that angular momentum transport could be controlled by the dynamical evolution of the large scale magnetic field. We study the impact of different prescriptions for the magnetic field evolution on the dynamics of the disk. This is a first step in confronting the theory of magnetic field transport with observations. We develop a version of the disk instability model that evolves the density, the temperature and the large scale vertical magnetic flux together. We take into account the accretion driven by turbulence or by a magnetized outflow. To evolve the magnetic flux, we use a toy model with physically motivated prescriptions depending mainly on the local magnetization. We find that allowing magnetic flux to be advected inwards provides the best agreement with DNe lightcurves. This leads to a hybrid configuration with an inner magnetized disk, driven by angular momentum losses to an MHD outflow, sharply transiting to an outer weakly-magnetized turbulent disk, where the eruptions are triggered. The dynamical impact is equivalent to truncating a viscous disk so that it does not extend down to the compact object, with the truncation radius dependent on the magnetic flux and evolving as $\dot{M}^{-2/3}$. Models of DNe and LMXBs lightcurves typically require the outer, viscous disk to be truncated in order to match observations. There is no generic explanation for this truncation. Abstract: Large-scale vertical magnetic fields are believed to play a key role in the evolution of protoplanetary discs. Associated with non-ideal effects, such as ambipolar diffusion, they are known to launch a wind that could drive accretion in the outer part of the disc ($R> 1$ AU). They also potentially lead to self-organisation of the disc into large-scale axisymmetric structures, similar to the rings recently imaged by sub-millimetre or near-infrared instruments (ALMA and SPHERE). The aim of this paper is to investigate the mechanism behind the formation of these gaseous rings, but also to understand the dust dynamics and its emission in discs threaded by a large-scale magnetic field. To this end, we performed global magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) axisymmetric simulations with ambipolar diffusion using a modified version of the PLUTO code. We explored different magnetisations with the midplane $\beta$ parameter ranging from $10^5$ to $10^3$ and included dust grains -- treated in the fluid approximation -- ranging from $100 \mu$m to 1 cm in size. We first show that the gaseous rings (associated with zonal flows) are tightly linked to the existence of MHD winds. Secondly, we find that millimetre-size dust is highly sedimented, with a typical scale height of 1 AU at $R=100$ AU for $\beta=10^4$, compatible with recent ALMA observations. We also show that these grains concentrate into pressure maxima associated with zonal flows, leading to the formation of dusty rings. Abstract: Gravitational instability (GI) controls the dynamics of young massive protoplanetary discs. Apart from facilitating gas accretion on to the central protostar, it must also impact on the process of planet formation: directly through fragmentation, and indirectly through the turbulent concentration of small solids. To understand the latter process, it is essential to determine the dust dynamics in such a turbulent flow. For that purpose, we conduct a series of 3D shearing box simulations of coupled gas and dust, including the gas's self-gravity and scanning a range of Stokes numbers, from 0.001 to ~0.2. First, we show that the vertical settling of dust in the midplane is significantly impeded by gravitoturbulence, with the dust scale-height roughly 0.6 times the gas scale height for centimetre grains. This is a result of the strong vertical diffusion issuing from (a) small-scale inertial-wave turbulence feeding off the GI spiral waves and (b) the larger-scale vertical circulations that naturally accompany the spirals. Second, we show that at R=50 AU concentration events involving sub-metre particles and yielding order 1 dust to gas ratios are rare and last for less than an orbit. Moreover, dust concentration is less efficient in 3D than in 2D simulations. We conclude that GI is not especially prone to the turbulent accumulation of dust grains. Abstract: We report the first large-scale palaeoproteomics research on eastern and southern African zooarchaeological samples, thereby refining our understanding of early caprine (sheep and goat) pastoralism in Africa. Assessing caprine introductions is a complicated task because of their skeletal similarity to endemic wild bovid species and the sparse and fragmentary state of relevant archaeological remains. Palaeoproteomics has previously proved effective in clarifying species attributions in African zooarchaeological materials, but few comparative protein sequences of wild bovid species have been available. Using newly generated type I collagen sequences for wild species, as well as previously published sequences, we assess species attributions for elements originally identified as caprine or ‘unidentifiable bovid’ from 17 eastern and southern African sites that span seven millennia. We identified over 70% of the archaeological remains and the direct radiocarbon dating of domesticate specimens allows refinement of the chronology of caprine presence in both African regions. These results thus confirm earlier occurrences in eastern Africa and the systematic association of domesticated caprines with wild bovids at all archaeological sites. The combined biomolecular approach highlights repeatability and accuracy of the methods for conclusive contribution in species attribution of archaeological remains in dry African environments.

Abstract: Abstract Background Global warming raises serious concerns about the persistence of species and populations locally adapted to their environment, simply because of the shift it produces in their adaptive landscape. For instance, the phenological cycle of tree species may be strongly affected by higher winter temperatures and late frost in spring. Given the variety of ecosystem services they provide, the question of forest tree adaptation has received increasing attention in the scientific community and catalyzed research efforts in ecology, evolutionary biology and functional genomics to study their adaptive capacity to respond to such perturbations. Results In the present study, we used an elevation gradient in the Pyrenees Mountains to explore the gene expression network underlying dormancy regulation in natural populations of sessile oak stands sampled along an elevation cline and potentially adapted to different climatic conditions mainly driven by temperature. By performing analyses of gene expression in terminal buds we identified genes displaying significant dormancy, elevation or dormancy-by-elevation interaction effects. Our Results highlighted that low- and high-altitude populations have evolved different molecular strategies for minimizing late frost damage and maximizing the growth period, thereby increasing potentially their respective fitness in these contrasting environmental conditions. More particularly, population from high elevation overexpressed genes involved in the inhibition of cell elongation and delaying flowering time while genes involved in cell division and flowering, enabling buds to flush earlier were identified in population from low elevation. Conclusion Our study made it possible to identify key dormancy-by-elevation responsive genes revealing that the stands analyzed in this study have evolved distinct molecular strategies to adapt their bud phenology in response to temperature.

Abstract: Summary: Metabolic rewiring is essential for cancer onset and progression. We previously showed that one-carbon metabolism-dependent formate production often exceeds the anabolic demand of cancer cells, resulting in formate overflow. Furthermore, we showed that increased extracellular formate concentrations promote the in vitro invasiveness of glioblastoma cells. Here, we substantiate these initial observations with ex vivo and in vivo experiments. We also show that exposure to exogeneous formate can prime cancer cells toward a pro-invasive phenotype leading to increased metastasis formation in vivo. Our results suggest that the increased local formate concentration within the tumor microenvironment can be one factor to promote metastases. Additionally, we describe a mechanistic interplay between formate-dependent increased invasiveness and adaptations of lipid metabolism and matrix metalloproteinase activity. Our findings consolidate the role of formate as pro-invasive metabolite and warrant further research to better understand the interplay between formate and lipid metabolism.
