This chapter invites instructors to consider practices to help students explore the intersection of social media and academic digital spaces. It argues that doing so increases digital literacy and digital citizenship in students.

Plant phylogenetics has been revolutionised in the genomic era, with target capture acting as the primary workhorse of most recent research in the new field of phylogenomics. Target capture (aka Hyb-Seq) allows researchers to sequence hundreds of genomic regions (loci) of their choosing, at relatively low cost per sample, from which to derive phylogenetically informative data. Although this highly flexible and widely applicable method has rightly earned its place as the field’s de facto standard, it does not come without its challenges. In particular, users have to specify which loci to sequence—a surprisingly difficult task, especially when working with non-model groups, as it requires pre-existing genomic resources in the form of assembled genomes and/or transcriptomes. In the absence of taxon-specific genomic resources, target sets exist that are designed to work across broad taxonomic scales. However, the highly conserved loci that they target may lack informativeness for difficult phylogenetic problems, such as that presented by the rapid radiation of Erica in southern Africa. We designed a target set for Erica phylogenomics intended to maximise informativeness and minimise paralogy while maintaining universality by including genes from the widely used Angiosperms353 set. Comprising just over 300 genes, the targets had excellent recovery rates in roughly 90 Erica species as well as outgroups from Calluna, Daboecia, and Rhododendron, and had high information content as measured by parsimony informative sites and Quartet Internode Resolution Probability (QIRP) at shallow nodes. Notably, QIRP was positively correlated with intron content, while including introns in targets—rather than recovering them via exon-flanking “bycatch”—substantially improved intron recovery. Overall, our results show the value of building a custom target set, and we provide a suite of open-source tools that can be used to replicate our approach in other groups (https://github.com/SethMusker/TargetVet).

Scholarship demonstrates that ePortfolios enable students to collect work over time and reflect upon personal, academic, and career growth. However, a discussion on whether ePortfolios helps first-year students describe their equity-mindedness and document their campus belonging perspectives remains mostly unexplored. The purpose of this point-in-time, qualitative research study is to describe first-year students' experiences completing an on-campus physical walkthrough each spring quarter of 2017, 2018, and 2019. All first-year students were enrolled in a yearlong Freshman Inquiry course at Portland State University in Oregon. This study utilizes Saldaña's (2016) in vivo coding approach to analyze students' survey responses and summative essays. The research design begins with students answering an anonymous pre-learning survey each spring quarter, then completing an on-campus walkthrough during the same spring quarter utilizing a Campus Equity Walkthrough Evaluation (CEWE) learning ePortfolio and concludes with students writing a summative reflective essay. The study found three themes: (a) Before completing the CEWE, students defined equality and equity interchangeably with fairness; (b) while completing it, students showed surprise at the variety of on-campus student resources; and (c) after completing the CEWE, students identified inclusion and exclusion experiences on campus based on their social identities. The results suggest that the CEWE shifted first-year students' understanding of equity-mindedness in three ways: (a) First-year students identify racialized structures and practices on campus, (b) the equity-minded ePortfolio framework develops students' capacity for self-reflection, and (c) students determine that racialized structures and practices on campus impact their campus belonging.

Much has been written about the necessity for graduates to be aware of their skill set and transferability for the workplace. Degree programs in Scotland have long relied on guidance from the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) on the taxonomy or wording of level learning outcomes (LLOs), which are the building blocks of degrees. More recently, a meta-skills framework created by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) offers clarity around meta-skills and suggests relevant wording, but these do not always align with academic taxonomies. The current research sought to explore the relationship between LLOs and meta-skills further from an academic and student perspective. A qualitative approach consisting of staff interviews and student focus groups from a range of creative business courses was adopted. A thematic analysis revealed gaps in staff and student understanding of LLOs and meta-skill terminology. The findings support the argument that skills should be linked more obviously to modular learning and recommendations are made as to how these could be communicated effectively to aid understanding around the transferability of university-acquired skills to the workplace.

The megagenus Erica L. (Ericaceae), as it is recognised today, includes 851 species of evergreen shrubs or small trees, the majority of which are endemic to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. From the first descriptions in Linnaeus’s Genera plantarum, a succession of authors ascribed the steadily accumulating numbers of known species to various of a total of 72 different genera. Until the latter half of the twentieth century, so called ‘minor genera’ such as Philippia Klotzsch and Blaeria L. were still recognised for many African species. The now uncontroversial inclusive circumscription of Erica, and a substantial proportion of its currently recognised species diversity, was conceptualised, described, and illustrated by the South African botanists E. G. H. (‘Ted’) Oliver and Inge M. Oliver in a succession of works published from 1964 to the present day. We review the historical development of generic delimitation in Erica sens. lat., focusing on the contribution of the Olivers to the current state of systematic knowledge of the genus, and presenting an overview and complete lists of literature and of taxa that they authored.

Estimates of the number of vascular plant species currently under threat of extinction are shockingly high, with the highest extinction rates reported for narrow-range, woody plants, especially in biodiversity hotspots with Mediterranean and tropical climates. The large genus Erica is a prime example, as a large proportion of its 851 species, all shrubs or small trees, are endemic to the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) of South Africa. Almost two hundred are known to be threatened and a further hundred are ‘Data Deficient’. We need to target conservation efforts and research to fill the most problematic knowledge gaps. This can be especially challenging in large genera, such as Erica, with numerous threatened species that are closely related. One approach involves combining knowledge of phylogenetic diversity with that of IUCN threat status to identify the most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species. We present an expanded and improved phylogenetic hypothesis for Erica (representing 65% of described species diversity) and combine this with available threat and distribution data to identify species and geographic areas that could be targeted for conservation effort to maximise preservation of phylogenetic diversity (PD). The resulting 39 EDGE taxa include 35 from the CFR. A further 32 high PD, data deficient taxa are mostly from outside the CFR, reflecting the low proportion of assessed taxa outside South Africa. The most taxon-rich areas are found in the south-western CFR. They are not the most phylogenetically diverse, but do include the most threatened PD. These results can be cross-referenced to existing living and seed-banked ex situ collections and used to target new and updated threat assessments and conservation action.

To support the work of the Global Conservation Consortium for Erica and update the Erica checklist in the World Flora Online (WFO), we have curated the taxonomic backbone in the WFO by expanding it to include updated nomenclatural information from the International Plant Name Index, missing names present in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), the Botanical Database of Southern Africa (BODATSA), and from the “International register of heather names” database, a data source not readily available online. The result is the most robust database of Erica names to date, including 851 species, 111 subspecies, 244 varieties, and 2787 synonyms, which is a reliable reference for initiatives such as the Erica identification aid, conservation prioritisation, and gap analyses. We disambiguate common orthographic variants within the database and present an overview of these. We also comment on the correct orthography of E. heleophila Guthrie & Bolus and E. michellensis Dulfer and the validity of E. tegetiformis E.G.H.Oliv. are discussed, and the use of E. adunca Benth. for a South African species rather than E. triceps Link, which is here regarded as insufficiently known and of uncertain application, is clarified.

Abstract Background Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women, many of whom have surgery for persistent pain. Recurrence of symptoms following an operation is common. Although hormonal treatment can reduce this risk, there is uncertainty about the best option. Objectives To evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of long-acting progestogen therapy compared with the combined oral contraceptive pill in preventing recurrence of endometriosis-related pain and quality of life. Design A multicentre, open, randomised trial with parallel economic evaluation. The final design was informed by a pilot study, qualitative exploration of women’s lived experience of endometriosis and a pretrial economic model. Setting Thirty-four United Kingdom hospitals. Participants Women of reproductive age undergoing conservative surgery for endometriosis. Interventions Long-acting progestogen reversible contraceptive (either 150 mg depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or 52 mg levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) or combined oral contraceptive pill (30 µg ethinylestradiol, 150 µg levonorgestrel). Main outcome measures The primary outcome was the pain domain of the Endometriosis Health Profile-30 questionnaire at 36 months post randomisation. The economic evaluation estimated the cost per quality-adjusted life-years gained. Results Four hundred and five women were randomised to receive either long-acting reversible contraceptive (N = 205) or combined oral contraceptive pill (N = 200). Pain scores improved in both groups (24 and 23 points on average) compared with preoperative values but there was no difference between the two (adjusted mean difference: −0.8, 95% confidence interval −5.7 to 4.2; p = 0.76). The long-acting reversible contraceptive group underwent fewer surgical procedures or second-line treatments compared with the combined oral contraceptive group (73 vs. 97; hazard ratio 0.67, 95% confidence interval 0.44 to 1.00). The mean adjusted quality-adjusted life-year difference between two arms was 0.043 (95% confidence interval −0.069 to 0.152) in favour of the combined oral contraceptive pill, although this cost an additional £533 (95% confidence interval 52 to 983) per woman. Limitations Limitations include the absence of a no-treatment group and the fact that many women changed treatments over the 3 years of follow-up. Use of telephone follow-up to collect primary outcome data in those who failed to return questionnaires resulted in missing data for secondary outcomes. The COVID pandemic may have affected rates of further surgical treatment. Conclusions At 36 months, women allocated to either intervention had comparable levels of pain, with both groups showing around a 40% improvement from presurgical levels. Although the combined oral contraceptive was cost-effective at a threshold of £20,000 per quality-adjusted life-year, the difference between the two was marginal and lower rates of repeat surgery might make long-acting reversible contraceptives preferable to some women. Future work Future research needs to focus on evaluating newer hormonal preparations, a more holistic approach to symptom suppression and identification of biomarkers to diagnose endometriosis and its recurrence. Plain language summary What was the question? Endometriosis is a condition where cells similar to ones that line the womb are found elsewhere in the body. Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women, many of whom have surgery for persistent pain. Unfortunately, symptoms often return and some women will need repeat operations. Hormonal contraceptives can prevent the return of endometriosis-related pain: either long-acting reversible contraceptives (injections or a coil, fitted inside the womb) or the combined oral contraceptive pill (often called ‘the pill’). We do not know which is the best option. The aim of this trial was to find out which of these two hormone treatments was more effective in terms of symptom relief, avoidance of further surgery and costs. What did we do? Four hundred and five women with endometriosis, who were not intending to get pregnant, participated in a clinical trial. Half of the participants took long-acting reversible contraceptives, and the other half took the pill for 3 years following endometriosis surgery. The choice of treatment was made at random by a computer to ensure a fair comparison, although those allocated to the long-acting contraceptive could choose between injections or the coil. Participants completed questionnaires about their symptoms and life quality at intervals up to 3 years. What did we find? Both treatments were equally good at reducing pain but more women using the pill had repeat operations. The pill was a little more costly overall but associated with a slightly higher quality of life. What does this mean? Both treatments are equally effective in reducing pain up to 3 years after surgery for endometriosis. The differences in costs are small and the choice of treatment should be based on personal preference. Scientific summary Background Endometriosis, which affects up to 1 in 10 women, is characterised by the proliferation of endometrial cells outside the uterus, usually within the pelvis. These endometriotic deposits undergo cyclical proliferation in response to ovarian oestrogen, resulting in internal bleeding, scarring and adhesion formation, which causes pain and has a serious impact on quality of life in affected women. Surgical removal or destruction of endometriotic tissue is currently the preferred treatment but the risk of recurrence is high. Recurrence can be controlled by post-surgical hormonal treatment to reduce circulating levels of oestrogen but there is uncertainty as to the clinical and cost-effectiveness of two commonly used modalities: long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) and the combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP). Progestogen-based LARCs used in the trial were the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) or depot medroxyprogesterone acetate injection (DMPA). Objectives To evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of LARCs compared with COCP in preventing recurrence of endometriosis-related pain and quality of life. Design A multicentre, open, randomised trial with parallel economic evaluation. The final design was informed by a pilot study, qualitative exploration of women’s lived experience of endometriosis and a pretrial economic model. Setting Thirty-four NHS hospitals within the UK. Participants Women of reproductive age undergoing laparoscopic surgery for pelvic pain due to endometriosis were eligible if they fulfilled the following criteria: Inclusion criteria: Aged 16–45 years. No immediate plans to conceive. Scheduled for laparoscopic conservative surgery, or diagnostic laparoscopy with concurrent surgery if endometriosis is found, for pelvic pain associated with endometriosis. Willing to be randomised to one long-acting progestogen (LNG-IUS or DMPA) and COCP. The following women were also eligible if they had recurrent pain and were to have conservative surgery for endometriosis: Had one or more previous diagnostic laparoscopies. Had previous laparoscopic conservative surgery for endometriosis, provided that this did not involve rectovaginal dissection or bowel resection. Used postoperative medical treatment, including the treatment options included in the trial. Previous use of treatment options included in the trial as contraceptives. Use of preoperative gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa), provided that this was stopped at least 4 weeks prior to laparoscopy. Exclusion criteria: No endometriosis identified at diagnostic laparoscopy. Infertility. Any plans for further elective endometriosis surgery (for deep disease or endometrioma). Contraindications to the use of hormonal treatment with oestrogen or progestogens. Suspicion of malignancy. Interventions Four hundred and five women were randomised in a one-to-one ratio via secure internet facility to either LARCs or COCP. The LARC was either 150 mg DMPA or 52 mg LNG-IUS. The COCP formulation contained 30 µg ethinylestradiol and 150 µg levonorgestrel. The LARC (LNG-IUS or DMPA) was selected before randomisation by the patient if a preference was apparent (or alternatively allocated randomly if there was no opinion). Outcome measures Primary outcome Pain as evaluated by the pain domain of the Endometriosis Health Profile – 30-item (EHP-30) questionnaire at 36 months post randomisation. Secondary outcomes (evaluated at 6 months, 1, 2 and 3 years): The four core domains of the EHP-30 questionnaire (control and powerlessness; emotional well-being; social support; self-image). The six modular domains of the EHP-30 (work; relationships with family; sexual relationships; feelings about medical profession; feelings about treatment; feelings about infertility). Pelvic pain measured by visual analogue scale (VAS) during periods; during intercourse; at any time. Responses to the question ‘compared to 1 month ago, would you say your pelvic pain has “Got much better”, “Got a little better”, “Not changed much”, “Got worse”’. Fatigue, as measured by Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) score. Menstrual regularity. Generic quality of life questionnaire [EuroQol-5 Dimensions, five-level version (EQ-5D-5L)], including index and thermometer scores. Capabilities, as a measure of well-being (ICEpop CAPability, ICECAP measure). Further therapeutic surgery or second-line treatment for endometriosis as a proxy for recurrence or ‘treatment failure’, defined as having undergone hysterectomy, surgery for endometriosis, laparoscopy or taking GnRHa treatment. Discontinuation rates of randomised treatment (time to first treatment change), with reasons for change. Serious adverse events. The economic evaluation estimated the cost per quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained. Sample size To detect an 8-point difference on the EHP-30 pain domain with 90% power (p = 0.05) and assuming the standard deviation (SD) to be 22 points required 160 participants per group, 320 in total. To account for any loss to follow-up (estimated to be 20%), this target was inflated to 400. Eight points is equivalent to 0.36 SD, which can be considered halfway between a small (0.2 SD) to moderate (0.5 SD) effect size. This size of sample would also give us good power (80%) to detect a 10-point difference in the two stratified analyses of LNG-IUS versus COCP and DMPA versus COCP provided that these subgroups had a roughly even split. Results A total of 405 women were allocated to receive either LARC (N = 205) or COCP (N = 200) following laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis. The two randomised groups were comparable in terms of age [29.6 years (6.7 years) vs. 29.3 years (6.6 years)]; body mass index [27.0 kg/m2 (10.6 kg/m2) vs. 26.3 kg/m2 (5.5 kg/m2)]; early-stage endometriosis: stages I and II (79% vs. 79%); complete surgical excision (92% vs. 90%); white ethnicity (91% vs. 92%) and previous hormonal treatment (27% vs. 23%). Pain scores improved in both groups (24 and 23 points on average) compared with preoperative values but there was no statistically significant difference between LARC and COCP at 3 years [adjusted mean difference: −0.8; 95% confidence interval (CI) −5.7 to 4.2; p = 0.76]. The choice of LARC (LNG-IUS or DMPA) did not alter these findings. Most of the other domains of the EHP-30 were improved in both groups at all time points compared with preoperative scores, with no consistent evidence of any difference between groups when estimates of uncertainty were considered. Women in the LARC group had fewer surgical procedures or second-line treatments compared with those taking COCP (73 vs. 97 events, occurring in 50 vs. 61 women due to repeat interventions), translating to a 33% reduction in time to treatment failure [hazard ratio (HR) 0.67, 95% CI 0.44 to 1.00]. Participants in the LARC group had a slightly higher mean EQ-5D-5L score at 36 months compared with those in the COCP arm (0.693 and 0.686, respectively). The mean adjusted imputed QALY difference between the two arms was 0.043 (95% CI −0.069 to 0.152) in favour of COCP, where participants in LARC group had a lower QALY value than those randomised to COCP (1.937 and 1.976, respectively). Despite this, the COCP group was estimated to be more expensive than the LARC group by £533 (95% CI 52 to 983) per woman over 36 months of follow-up. Limitations In the absence of a no-treatment arm, we were unable to demonstrate the effect of surgery alone on preventing recurrence of pain symptoms. While we are able to comment on the effectiveness of a strategy of postoperative prescription of LARC versus COCP, the true impact of these interventions is difficult to gauge as the prolonged duration of follow-up meant that many women had discontinued their allocated treatments. The predominance of white women in the recruited sample limits our ability to be confident about how our results might apply to women from other ethnic backgrounds. Use of telephone follow-up to collect primary outcome data in those who failed to return full questionnaires resulted in missing data for some of the secondary outcomes. While all patients were recruited prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of women who required further surgery may be underestimated, given the negative impact of COVID-19 on waiting lists for elective surgery throughout the UK. It is possible that this may have led to an increase in the use of GnRHa treatment by women who were unable to access surgery for their symptoms. Conclusions At 36 months, women allocated to LARCs or COCP had comparable levels of pain, with both groups showing around 40% improvement from presurgical levels. Although COCP is likely to be considered more cost-effective at a threshold of £20,000 per QALY, the difference between the two is marginal. LARCs may be preferred by some women as they are associated with lower rates of surgery, particular hysterectomy and operations for recurrence of endometriosis. Future work Future research needs to focus on evaluating newer hormonal preparations, a more holistic approach to symptom suppression and identification of biomarkers to diagnose endometriosis and its recurrence. Active measures need to be adopted to improve the inclusivity of clinical research and ensure that the ethnic mix within participants mirror that of the general population. Species identification is fundamental to all aspects of biology and conservation. The process can be challenging, particularly in groups including many closely related or similar species. The problem is confounded by the absence of an up-to-date taxonomic revision, but even with such a resource all but professional botanists may struggle to recognise key species, presenting a substantial barrier to vital work such as surveys, threat assessments, and seed collection for ex situ conservation. Genus Erica: An Identification Aid is a tool to help both amateurs and professionals identify (using a limited number of accessible characteristics) and find information about the 851 species and many subspecific taxa of the genus Erica. We present an updated version 4.00, with new features including integrating distribution data from GBIF and iNaturalist, links to taxonomic resources through World Flora Online, and a probability function for identifications, that is freely available for PCs. It remains a work in progress: We discuss routes forward for collaboratively improving this resource.

The period 1944 - 1952 saw the rise and fall of the mobile markets of Johannesburg, an experiment in municipal food hawking. The scheme was an attempt to counter the high food prices of the period. Much controversy surrounded the introduction of the mobile food vans. At first the vans served the lower-income areas of White Johannesburg but later geographically extended their zone of operation into higher income suburbs. At the peak of the programme, seven vans were in action. The decline of the mobile markets was attributed to their high operating costs, a precipitous fall in consumer patronage, intense competition from private retailers and hawkers, and to the return of more normal marketing conditions after the war.

In 1915, after two decades of neglect by the Transvaal Gold Mining Estates Company (TGME), village sanitation as well as cemetery, pound and slaughter-management was placed in the hands of the Pilgrims Rest Health Committee (PRHC). The TGME, however, retained effective control over land use and disposal and over the supply and cost of water and electricity. The insignificant and impecunious health committee had therefore to rely inevitably on the mining company's assistance in the form of labour and the use of its stores, offices and workshops. The foundations and dimensions of the aforesaid dependence are the subject matter of this article.

In the country areas where sparse settlement and light traffic did not warrant the construction of railways, the South African Railways operated a road transport service for passengers and small freight since 1912. White passengers were accommodated more comfortably than blacks, and protected their privilege fiercely. Educated, middle-class black passengers in particular objected to the rough physical conditions under which they travelled, and requested superior facilities that would reflect their higher social standing. The Railways struggled to operate a service that would satisfy its critics, yet be financially viable in the face of fluctuating demand.

This paper examines the experience of students transitioning between online and in-person live event projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon longitudinal qualitative data collected over a 3-year period, we explored how students perceived the challenges, their own development, and the pedagogical changes. Events management pedagogy relies on experiential learning and the hosting of student-led in-person events. The absence of in-person events and teaching had a significant negative impact on students, not caused by the adjustment to learning environment or assessment but by the act of change itself. Students ultimately recognized the value of experiential learning online and the benefits of developing digital skills, communication, resilience, adaptability, and confidence, leading to the embedding of online communications and virtual elements within 2022's live event projects. This paper considers the lessons learned from transitioning between in-person and digital event projects and evaluates the future of online tools for experiential learning in higher education.

In support of ongoing taxonomic work on the large and complex flowering plant genus Erica (Ericaceae), we document nineteen pairs of homonyms representing currently used illegitimate names. We provide replacements for thirteen names and new typifications for five. We relegate five names to synonymy: Erica aemula Guthrie & Bolus under Erica distorta Bartl.; Erica armata Klotzsch ex Benth. under Erica umbrosa H. A. Baker; Erica capensis T.M. Salter under Erica turbiniflora Salisb.; Erica lanata Andrews under Erica flaccida Link; and Erica tomentosa Salisb. under Erica velutina Bartl. Finally, we suggest conservation of Erica aristata Andrews. The new names are: Erica adelopetala E.C. Nelson & E.G.H. Oliv. replacing Erica insignis E.G.H. Oliv.; Erica bombycina E.C. Nelson & Pirie replacing Erica niveniana E.G.H. Oliv.; Erica concordia E.C. Nelson & E.G.H. Oliv. replacing Erica constantia Nois. ex Benth.; Erica didymocarpa E.C. Nelson & E.G.H. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate intravenous scleral and intracameral aqueous angiography in normotensive (n = 4) and hypertensive glaucomatous (n = 6) ADAMTS10-mutant canine eyes. ANIMALS STUDIED: Ten ADAMTS10-mutant dogs were used in this study. PROCEDURES: Dogs were sedated and one eye from each dog underwent scleral angiography following intravenous injection of 0.25% indocyanine green (ICG). After a 24-h recovery period, the same eye underwent aqueous angiography via intracameral administration of ICG. Imaging of identical scleral sectors from the same eye was performed using a Heidelberg Spectralis® Confocal Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope. Intrascleral vessel depth and lumen diameters were measured using Heidelberg Spectralis® optical coherence tomography and computer software. RESULTS: Scleral angiography permitted visualization of vascular components associated with conventional aqueous humor outflow pathways with an average time from injection to fluorescence of 35.8 ± 10.6 s (mean ± SD). Two normotensive eyes (2/10;20%) demonstrated turbulent dye movement, while 4 hypertensive eyes (4/10;40%) exhibited laminar flow. Aqueous angiography demonstrated dye fluorescence within the post-trabecular conventional aqueous humor outflow pathways in all 10 eyes at 34.3 ± 11.0 s post-injection. Sectoral and dynamic outflow patterns were observed primarily within the superotemporal sector in nine eyes (9/10; 90%). Seven eyes (7/10; 70%) demonstrated pulsatile dye movement and five eyes (5/10; 50%) exhibited laminar flow. The degree of laminar movement of dye was greatest in hypertensive eyes. Vessel lumen diameters measured 133.85 ± 28.36 µm and 161.18 ± 6.02 µm in hypertensive and normotensive eyes, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Aqueous angiography allowed for visualization of fluorescent dye in the superotemporal sclera. Laminar flow and smaller lumen vessels were observed mainly in hypertensive eyes.

A state-of-the-art multi-omics approach was applied to improve our understanding of the aetio-pathogenesis of a highly prevalent, performance-limiting disorder of racehorses: mild-to-moderate equine asthma (MMEA). This is a prerequisite to improving prophylactic, management, and therapeutic options for this condition. Although a number of risk factors have been identified, options for intervention are limited. This study applied a multi-omic approach to reveal key inflammatory pathways involved in inflammatory cell recruitment to the lower airways and highlight distinct MMEA inflammatory profiles. We compared bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cell gene and protein expression data from horses with non-inflammatory BALF cytology with those isolated from horses with neutrophilic, mastocytic, mixed neutrophilic/mastocytic, and eosinophilic/mastocytic inflammation. The analyses on transcriptomic/proteomic data derived from BALF from horses with neutrophilic cytology showed enrichment in classical inflammatory pathways, and horses with mastocytic inflammation showed enrichment in pathways involved in hypersensitivity reactions related to nonclassical inflammation potentially mimicking a Th2-immune response. The mixed eosinophilic/mastocytic group also presented with a nonclassical inflammatory profile, whereas the mixed neutrophilic/mastocytic group revealed profiles consistent with both neutrophilic inflammation and hypersensitivity. Our adopted multi-omics approach provided a holistic assessment of the immunological status of the lower airways associated with the different cytological profiles of equine asthma.

Abstract Background Upon arrival, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is lower in new immigrants than their native counterparts in the U.S. With longer residency in the U.S., these differences converge over time, followed by higher prevalence among immigrants than native U.S. residents. Results from the Live Well project in the Greater Boston area demonstrate the viability of utilizing a culturally adapted, community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to reduce weight gain among newly immigrated mother–child dyads. Methods Haitian, Latina, and Brazilian mother–child dyads (n = 390), new to the U.S. (fewer than 10 years) were enrolled in a one- to two-year long CBPR lifestyle intervention that targeted dietary and physical activity behaviors. Attendance was recorded to establish dose. Demographics, anthropometrics, and relevant covariates were collected from participants at baseline, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated using objectively measured height and weight. Linear mixed regression models were used to assess change in BMI and BMI z-score of mothers and children respectively. Results At baseline, nearly 75% of mothers and 50% of children were either overweight or obese (BMI ≥ 25.0 and BMI z-score ≥ 85th percentile, respectively). Only 20% of mothers attended all 12 intervention sessions in year 1. Using intent-to-treat analyses, no significant time, intervention, or time × intervention effects were observed for weight change of mothers or children at follow-up. Mothers in the highest quantile (those who attended all 12 intervention sessions) had significant reductions in BMI at 18 months (1.76 units lower, 95%CI: -3.14, -0.37) and 24 months (2.61 units, 95%CI -3.92, -1.29) compared to mothers in the lower quantiles, including those with no exposure. Such dose effects on BMI z-scores were not noted for children. Conclusions Findings from Live Well demonstrate the viability of utilizing a CBPR approach to address overweight and obesity among immigrant mothers. Given the higher-than-expected prevalence of overweight and obesity among mother–child dyads by ~ 6 years of U.S. residency, and lower maternal participation rates in the intervention, additional research is necessary to identify the optimal intervention length, retention strategies, and approach to jointly support healthy maternal and child weight.

Abstract The bringing together of multiple knowledge sources, such as Indigenous knowledge (IK) and Environmental science Knowledge (ESK), is a topic of considerable interest and significance in environmental research. In the areas of resource management for example, the bringing together of IK and ESK datasets has raised considerable interest for its potential to increase understanding and provide insights into complex phenomena such as the effects of climate change and variability on wildlife health and distribution. The potential benefits that exist from merging these knowledge sources have been widely acknowledged. However, navigating the complex processes involved in knowledge linking continues to pose significant challenges. This systematic mapping protocol will guide the collection and analysis of literature to examine the approaches and methods used in published studies that aim to bring together Indigenous and Environmental science Knowledge in environmental research. The particular focus of this examination is placed on identification of the types of approaches and methods used to merge IK and ESK datasets at the stages of data analysis, results, and interpretation/discussion in the research process. Through a scoping exercise, a draft search string was developed based on a predetermined list of keywords. Consultation was held with a senior Indigenous scholar to advise on the keywords used and consideration for IK likely to be represented in the collected literature. The final search string will be applied to online bibliographic databases to collect studies published in peer‐reviewed journals. The final capture of the search will be screened in two stages: (1) at the level of title and abstract and (2) at full‐text. All studies included will be coded using a standardised coding template and a narrative synthesis approach will be used to identify patterns in the evidence, including knowledge gaps and clusters. Practical implication: The resulting systematic map, following the outlined procedures in this protocol and considering guidelines from the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (CEE) and Reporting standards for Systematic Evidence Syntheses (ROSES), can serve to support and inform future research endeavours engaged in working towards the linking of IK and ESK, with practical implications for communities and policymakers.
