Exploring the expression of landscape identity in the 21st century, the article asks how garden and landscape types so strongly associated with historical periods and places in the Islamic world, such as the chahar bagh , or terraced garden, can inspire new contemporary landscape design to push design ideas forward rather than merely imitate the past. In the tension between a historic identity that derives from past visual traditions and the desire for a modern identity that expresses new social values, do certain qualities mark a space as belonging to an Islamic historical tradition? The article does not provide a survey of historic Islamic gardens or the many new Islamic gardens and parks built in recent decades. Its aim is first to explore the tension between tradition and innovation within the history of Islamic gardens and then to sample five contemporary sites that have addressed tradition and innovation in different ways in the modern era. Vineyards provide space for microhabitats and require a very specific way of management. Vineyard vegetation undergoes succession over time, which affects insect communities. The selected vineyards are located in Moravia in the Czech Republic. The vegetation of the vineyards consisted of 48 species of annual dicotyledons, 63 species of perennial dicotyledons, 9 species of annual grasses, and 10 species of perennial grasses. During the observation, 9 species of carabid beetles were recorded in the monitored vineyards. The composition of the vegetation in the vineyards changes with the age of the vineyard. Over time, representatives of the perennial dicotyledons, perennial grasses groups increase and representatives of the group annual dicotyledons decrease. The age of the vineyards also changed the carabid beetle community - the Anchomenus dorsalis species was more common in older vineyards. The Dolichus halensis, Leistus ferrugineus and Platynus assimilis species were more frequently recorded in summer and fall in older vineyards. The other species preferred younger vineyards. A higher abundance was recorded in summer and fall, which may be due to a higher food supply and sufficient amount of microhabitats for hibernation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the phenology of urban trees can help mitigate the heat island effect by strategically planting and managing trees to provide shade, reduce energy consumption, and improve urban microclimates. In this study, we carried out the first evaluation of high spatial resolution satellite images from Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope images to quantify urban street tree phenology in downtown Beijing. The major research goals are to evaluate the consistency in pixel-level spring–summer growth period phenology and to investigate the capacity of high-resolution satellite observations to distinguish phenological transition dates of urban street trees. At the city scale, Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope show similar temporal NDVI trends in general. The pixel-level analysis reveals that green-up date consistency is higher in areas with medium (NDVI > 0.5) to high (NDVI > 0.7) vegetation cover when the impacts of urban surfaces on vegetation reflectance are excluded. Similarly, maturity date consistency significantly increases in densely vegetated pixels with NDVI greater than 0.7. At the street scale, this study emphasizes the efficacy of NDVI time series derived from PlanetScope in quantifying the phenology of common street tree genera, including Poplars (Populus), Ginkgos (Ginkgo), Chinese Scholars (Styphnolobium), and Willows (Salix), in downtown Beijing to improve urban vegetation planning. Based on PlanetScope observations, we found that the four street tree genera have unique phenological patterns. Interestingly, we found that the trees along many major streets, where Chinese Scholars are the major tree genus, have later green-up dates than other areas in downtown Beijing. In conclusion, the three satellite observation datasets prove to be effective in monitoring street tree phenology during the spring–summer growth period in Beijing. PlanetScope is effective in monitoring tree phenology at the street scale; however, Landsat-8 may be affected by the mixture of land covers due to its relatively coarse spatial resolution. The first step to achieving ecological sustainability and intensification in agricultural systems is to have a comprehensive agroecological analysis of agricultural systems. This research analyzed the agroecological ecosystem of potato cultivation in the Torbat-e Heydariyeh Region of Iran over fifteen years (2001-2016). Based on the results, potato yield increased by 0.28 t ha-1 yr-1. The average potential yield of potato was calculated by the FAO method to be 64 t.ha-1. Also, the potential yield did not increase significantly during the study period. The average yield gap of potato was calculated to be 32.44 t ha-1. Also, with increasing yield, the yield gap showed a decreasing trend. The ecosystems experienced a steady rise in intensification, and the stability decreased. It was observed that although nitrogen fertilizer application was increased, its efficiency dropped from 110 kg tuber per kg of nitrogen fertilizer to 70 kg. Due to the decreasing trend of NUpE (Nitrogen uptake efficiency) and NUE (Nitrogen use efficiency) during the studied years, the NUE gap was the main factor in increasing nitrogen consumption, increasing intensification, and reducing stability in the studied systems. Therefore, changing the management method to increase the efficiency of nitrogen consumption can be suggested as the first step for moving towards ecological intensification and improving the sustainability of potato production systems. The renin–angiotensin system (RAS)—a classical blood pressure regulator—largely contributes to healthy organ development and function. Besides, RAS activation promotes age‐related changes and age‐associated diseases, which are attenuated/abolished by RAS‐blockade in several mammalian species. RAS‐blockers also increase rodent lifespan. In previous work, we discussed how RAS‐blockade downregulates mTOR and growth hormone/IGF‐1 signaling, and stimulates AMPK activity (together with klotho, sirtuin, and vitamin D‐receptor upregulation), and proposed that at least some of RAS‐blockade's aging benefits are mediated through regulation of these intermediaries and their signaling to mitochondria. Here, we included RAS‐blockade's impact on other aging regulatory pathways, that is, TGF‐ß, NF‐kB, PI3K, MAPK, PKC, Notch, and Wnt, all of which affect mitochondria. No direct evidence is available on RAS/RAS‐blockade‐aging regulatory pathway–mitochondria interactions. However, existing results allow to conjecture that RAS‐blockers neutralize mitochondrial dysfunction by acting on the discussed pathways. The reviewed evidence led us to propose that the foundation is laid for conducting clinical trials aimed at testing whether angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB)—even at subclinical doses—offer the possibility to live longer and in better health. As ACEi and ARB are low cost and well‐tolerated anti‐hypertension therapies in use for over 35 years, investigating their administration to attenuate/prevent aging effects seems simple to implement. Amphitricia flachi (Brenske, 1892) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Rhizotrogini) is an emerging insect pest of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) in the Philippines. The larva of this pest feeds on the roots of cacao, and the adult emerges from the root, as evidenced by an exit hole near the base of the tree, thereby causing significant damage and eventually death to the tree. The pest was monitored from different cacao plantations in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija; Bani, Pangasinan; Sariaya, Quezon; and Tuy, Batangas. High elevation habitats within the Mediterranean biome are expected to be disproportionally exposed to climate change impacts in comparison to the ecosystems of the lower and drier sites. The distribution and structure of alpine ecosystems greatly depend on temperature variables including growing season length. Tree-line shifts, structural change of alpine plant communities and shifts of the alpine-nival ecotone are among the most commonly observed impacts of climate change. The Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA) network has developed a common methodology and facilitates a global approach for studying the effects of climate change in alpine ecosystems with repeated measurements in permanent plots. Mt Olympus, Greece, was the last target region to join the network. In this study we use the vegetation data from the baseline survey on Mt Olympus to describe floristic patterns along an elevational gradient of four summits. To examine compositional, life-form and chorological differences between- and within-summits we analyzed data from 32 plots. Moreover, we fitted generalized linear models to distinguish important environmental variables for the occurrence of plant taxa. Our results demonstrate that elevation was the dominant factor influencing vegetation changes along the examined gradients. Additional, the life-form spectrum does not provide sufficient information to be used as index for monitoring climate change impacts on vegetation composition. Instead, the use of the species matrix provides enough information regarding the between-summits dissimilarities. We also identified a number of plant taxa that are highly related to either low or high elevations. These taxa could be used as early warning indices of compositional shifts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Republic of Croatia is spread in geographical and climatic conditions that support a great diversity of habitats and associated plant taxa, many of which can be used for food or medicine. However, urbanization, loss of natural habitats, as well as changes in people's dependence on the natural resources from the surrounding environment may lead to the loss of valuable knowledge about the use of plants and mushrooms. With the aim of studying and preserving this knowledge in the continental north-western part of Croatia, an ethnobotanical survey was undertaken at the two study areas—Valpovo and Đurđevac, which included a total of 17 settlements. A total of 103 informants, 65% female and 35% male, aged between 22 and 83 years, participated in an interview using pre-planned questionnaires. The informants reported 131 plants belonging to 55 families and 17 mushroom taxa. The largest number of plants belonged to the families of Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, and Apiaceae. In both areas, the informants cultivate and also gather wild plants, but these practices are better preserved in the area of Đurđevac where 109 taxa from 47 families were recorded. In addition to cultivated and gathered plants, informants from the Valpovo area also reported the use of purchased plants. Plants and mushrooms are mostly used as food (21 plant taxa and 17 mushrooms), but plants also serve as medicine (68 taxa), as both food and medicine (35 taxa), feed for cattle (11 taxa), repellent (four taxa), and/or space freshener (two taxa). The most frequently used wild plants are Chamomilla recutita, Mentha x piperita, and Urtica dioica, while Boletus edulis, Agaricus campestris, and Macrolepiota procera are the most often used mushrooms. The results indicate that the local people in the studied north-western part of Croatia still nurture the practice of cultivating and gathering plants and that herbal remedies are considerably important among the informants. Olea europaea L. 1753, is one of the oldest and most distinctive trees in the Mediterranean region. Its nutritional, social, cultural, and economic value is very important for populations in arid regions, where it is widely distributed. A sign of a sustainable environment in many agricultural regions is the existence of a wide variety and abundance of arthropod groups. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the diversity of arthropods subservientin in olive agro-systems in the arid region by using several sampling techniques, namely classic sight hunting, visual inspection, Barber pots, and yellow traps. The inventory is carried out over a period of 5 months, from February to June 2023, in three stations in M’Sila (northeastern Algeria). Three classes of arthropods were found: Insecta, Arachnida, and Malacostraca. Captures were numerically dominated by Insecta, representing 96.88% of total captures. Arachnida and Malacostraca classes represented about 2.74 and 0.38%, respectively. During this research, a total of 1861 arthropod individuals were collected and identified into 83 species, 79 genera, 53 families, and 15 orders. The most abundant orders were: Diptera (42.56%), Hymenoptera (28.11%), and Coleoptera (7.32%). However, we found a significant difference in species composition according to habitat (P < 0.01). The species were determined, and the ecological indices were calculated (Shannon Value, Evenness values and Simpson reciprocal index). The dominant functional feeding groups were phytophages (41.91 %), predators (32.94%), and polyphages (22.14%). The arthropods included several olive pests such as Euphyllura olivina (Costa) (Hemiptera: Liviidae), Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), Prays oleae (Bernard) (Lepidoptera: Praydidae), Liothrips oleae Costa (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae), and Oxycenus maxwelli (Keifer) (Arachnida: Eriophyidae). Atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS), an increasingly recognized disorder, may cause ischemic nephropathy and renovascular hypertension, that may occur separately or together. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) resulting from atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis usually have high-grade stenosis of both renal arteries or stenosis to a solitary functioning kidney. Patients at risk for bilateral renal artery stenosis are also at risk for other disorders that can present with similar clinical findings but cannot be corrected by surgery or angioplasty; these include hypertensive nephrosclerosis and atheroembolic kidney disease. In clinical decision-making about screening for and therapy of ARAS, we balance the chance of improving renal function and blood pressure with the risks of interventional procedures. In this article we provide an overview of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of ARVD based on consensus recommendations from a panel of physician experts who attended the recent KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) Controversies Conference on central and peripheral arterial diseases in chronic kidney disease. The rapid progress in this field necessitates an update. Vulnerable plaque is closely related to the occurrence of ischemic stroke. Therefore, early accurate identification of plaque vulnerability is crucial in risk stratification. In the development of vulnerable plaques, the change of the adventitia is earlier than that of the intima. Currently, researchers focused on the ultrasound detection of intraplaque and intima, but adventitia was often ignored in the examination. Real-time elastography technology (RTE) provides an estimation of adventitia stiffness, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) provides the quantification of adventitial VV. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the value of adventitia in the early diagnosis of plaque vulnerability by combining CEUS and RTE based on histopathology. Rabbit carotid atherosclerosis models were established, and CEUS and RTE were performed. Normalized maximal video-intensity enhancement (MVE) was calculated to quantify adventitial VV density, and strain values were acquired to evaluate the adventitial elasticity. After removal of the lesion lumen, histological analysis of each excised plaque and adventitia was performed, and vulnerable plaques (n = 32) and stable group (n = 13) were distinguished. Normalized MVE of the adventitial VV and adventitial strain values in the vulnerable group was significantly higher than those in the stable group. Normalized MVE and strain values had a positive linear correlation with histological findings. Normalized MVE of the adventitial VV combined with adventitial strain values could identify plaque vulnerability with the area under the curve of 0.913 (sensitivity 90% and specificity 97%). Accordingly, the multimodal ultrasound detection strategy of adventitia has a high diagnostic value for early plaque vulnerability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seasonal pollen allergy is a major public health concern, with many different pollen aeroallergens being present in the atmosphere at varying levels during the season. In Norway, information about spatiotemporal variation of pollen aeroallergens is currently lacking, leading to reduced ability to manage and treat seasonal allergies. Seven pollen aeroallergens (alder, hazel, willow, birch, pine, grass and mugwort) were monitored daily for 16 years from 12 regions and coalesced to create regional pollen calendars. Seasonal statistics, such as seasonal pollen integral (SPIn), onset, duration and periods of high and very high concentrations, were calculated for all pollen types and regions. High days were further modelled with SPIn in a linear regression framework to investigate the connection between the strength of the season and number of days above high pollen thresholds. The tree pollen season occurred between January and mid-July, with the pollen aeroallergens birch and pine being the most prominent in all regions. The herb pollen season was observed to occur between June and mid-August, although mugwort was almost completely absent. The grass pollen season was mostly mild on average but more severe in some regions, primarily Kristiansand. South-east regions of Oslo, Kristiansand and Lillehammer had the overall highest pollen load, while northern regions of Bodø, Tromsø and Kirkenes had the overall lowest pollen loads. SPIn and days above high pollen thresholds had positive highly significant relationships (R2 > 0.85) for all pollen types, bar mugwort. Regional pollen calendars and seasonal statistics contribute to reliable information that can be used by medical professionals to effectively and timely manage and treat seasonal pollen allergies in Norway. Cellular senescence, a condition where cells undergo arrest and can assume an inflammatory phenotype, has been associated with initiation and perpetuation of inflammation driving multiple disease processes in rodent models and humans. Senescent cells secrete inflammatory cytokines, proteins, and matrix metalloproteinases, termed the senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which accelerates the aging processes. In preclinical models, drug interventions termed "senotherapeutics" selectively clear senescent cells and represent a promising strategy to prevent or treatmultiple age-related conditions in humans and veterinary species. In this review, we summarize the current available literature describing in vitro evidence for senotheraputic activity, preclinical models of disease, ongoing human clinical trials, and potential clinical applications in veterinary medicine. These promising data to date provide further justification for future studies identifying the most active senotherapeutic combinations, dosages, and routes of administration for use in veterinary medicine. Introduction: The use of treated municipal wastewater (TWW) represents a relevant opportunity for irrigation of agricultural crops in semi-arid regions to counter the increasing water scarcity. Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) are often detected in treated wastewater, posing a risk to humans and the environment. PhACs can accumulate in soils and translocate into different plant tissues, reaching, in some cases, edible organs and entering the food chain. Methods: This study evaluated the uptake and translocation processes of 10 PhACs by olive trees irrigated with TWW, investigating their accumulation in different plant organs. The experiment was conducted in southern Italy, in 2-year-old plants irrigated with three different types of water: freshwater (FW), TWW spiked with 10 PhACs at a concentration of 200 µg L-1 (1× TWW), and at a triple dose (3× TWW), from July to October 2021. The concentration of PhACs in soil and plant organs was assessed, collecting samples of root, stem, shoot, leaf, fruit, and kernel at 0 (T0), 50 (T1), and 107 (T2) days of irrigation. PhACs extraction from soil and plant organs was carried out using the QuEChERS method, and their concentrations were determined by high-resolution mass spectrometry coupled with liquid chromatography. Results: Results of uptake factors (UF) showed a different behavior between compounds according to their physicochemical properties, highlighting PhACs accumulation and translocation in different plant organs (also edible part) in 1× TWW and 3× TWW compared to FW. Two PhACs, carbamazepine and fluconazole, showed interactions with the soil-plant system, translocating also in the aerial part of the plant, with a translocation factor (TF) greater than 1, which indicates high root-to-leaf translocation. Discussion: Findings highlight that only few PhACs among the selected compounds can be uptaken by woody plants and accumulated in edible parts at low concentration. No effects of PhACs exposure on plant growth have been detected. Despite the attention to be paid to the few compounds that translocate into edible organs, these results are promising for adapting wastewater irrigation in crops. Increasing knowledge about PhACs behavior in woody plants can be important for developing optimized wastewater irrigation and soil management strategies to reduce PhACs accumulation and translocation in plants. Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a skin inflammation caused by contact with urine or faeces or both. It has a negative effect on the patient's quality of life and is indicative of the care provided. However, globally there is a lack of empirical data on the prevalence of IAD. Aim: To identify, for the first time, the proportion of older adults in extended care settings in Ireland affected by IAD. Design: Cross-sectional, multisite, point prevalence survey, across three community extended care settings for older people in Ireland. Methods: Two clinical nurse specialists, using the Scottish Excoriation and Moisture Related Skin Damage Tool, identified the presence of IAD through clinical observation and visual skin inspection. IAD prevalence was calculated for the total population and incontinent population sets using percentages and confidence intervals (CI). Results: The prevalence of incontinence was 86.4% (n=165), a significantly higher proportion were female (P=0.003). The point prevalence of IAD across the total population and incontinent population was 11.5% (22/191; 95% CI, 7.4–19.9%) and 13.3% (22/164; 95% CI, 8.5–19.5%), respectively. Being incontinent was associated with being female, more dependent (Barthel), having possible cognitive impairment, poorer mobility (Braden and Waterlow) and a high risk of pressure ulcers (Waterlow). A logistic regression analysis found no predictor variables for IAD among the variables that met the cut-off point for this analysis. Conclusions: The study provides the first point prevalence empirical data on the occurrence of IAD in Ireland. It can inform decision-making on future planning and budgeting of new quality improvement projects and act as a benchmark for ongoing auditing of IAD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Robusta coffee is one of Malaysia’s most planted species due to its ability to adapt to the local climate. Nonetheless, the coffee species was perceived as having lower quality and economic value due to bitterness and astringency. It is widely believed that higher caffeine and chlorogenic acid contents in Robusta coffee beans contributed to the unfavourable bitter and astringent flavour. Hence, the present study intends to evaluate the effect of spontaneous wet fermentation (SWF) of locally grown Robusta (Coffea canephora L.) coffee towards the microbiological properties, phytochemical constituents, in particular caffeine and chlorogenic acids (CGA), total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant properties. The SWF of green Robusta coffee beans from University Agricultural Park (UAP), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, took place at ambient temperatures between 25 to 28°C, and the pH decreased from 5.2 to 3.64 over five days of fermentation. The total plate count, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts were significantly increased to approximately 7 Log10 CFU/g. The SWF has reduced caffeine content by 35%, while the CGA has decreased by roughly 20%. The SWF also led to an increase in TPC of approximately 31.5% and an increase in antioxidant activity of approximately 60%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: (-)-Fenchone is a naturally occurring monoterpene found in the essential oils of Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Thuja occidentalis L., and Peumus boldus Molina. Pharmacological studies have reported its antinociceptive, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal, and antioxidant activities. Methods: The preventive antiulcer effects of (-)-Fenchone were assessed through oral pretreatment in cysteamine-induced duodenal lesion models. Gastric healing, the underlying mechanisms, and toxicity after repeated doses were evaluated using the acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer rat model with oral treatment administered for 14 days. Results: In the cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcer model, fenchone (37.5–300 mg/kg) significantly decreased the ulcer area and prevented lesion formation. In the acetic acid-induced ulcer model, fenchone (150 mg/kg) reduced (p < 0.001) ulcerative injury. These effects were associated with increased levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), interleukin (IL)-10, and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). Furthermore, treatment with (-)-Fenchone (150 mg/kg) significantly reduced (p < 0.001) malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NF-κB). A 14-day oral toxicity investigation revealed no alterations in heart, liver, spleen, or kidney weight, nor in the biochemical and hematological parameters assessed. (-)-Fenchone protected animals from body weight loss while maintaining feed and water intake. Conclusion: (-)-Fenchone exhibits low toxicity, prevents duodenal ulcers, and enhances gastric healing activities. This study aims to collect data on medicinal plants collected from Senalba Chergui forest (Djelfa, Algeria) and used in traditional medicine by the local population. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out with 107 informants through direct interviews using a structured questionnaire. The results showed that women (71%) use medicinal plants more than men, older people have more information than the young. Furthermore, the vast majority of users of medicinal plants are illiterate. 32 species belonging to 21 families and 27 genera are identified. Rufescens (Link) Deb (64%), Rosmarinus officinalis L (63%), Stipa parviflora Desf (61%), Pistacia terebinthus L (60%) and Rosmarinus tournefortii de Noé (50%). The Lamiaceae and Asteraceae families were dominant the most often, we emphasize that the leaves were the most used (53.13%). The results show that decoction (59.38%) was the most commonly used method to prepare remedies. It appears that gastrointestinal diseases were the most often treated mainly orally. The genus Phagnalon Cass., included in the Asteraceae family, has a wide distribution, expanding from Macaronesia in the West to the Himalayas in the East, from South France and Nord Italy to Ethiopia and Arabian Peninsula. Various species of Phagnalon have been used in the popular medicine of several countries as medicinal herbs and food. The extracts and the secondary metabolites, have a varied application spectrum at several biological levels, with antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antitumor, etc. properties having been reported. The essential oils of four taxa, Phagnalon rupestre, Phagnalon saxatile var. viride, and Phagnalon rupestre subsp. illyricum var. metlesicsii collected in Sicily (Italy), never previously investigated, and of Phagnalon graecum collected in Greece, were analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). All the oils were very rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons, with β-pinene as main constituent. Chemotaxonomic considerations with respect to all the other oils of Phagnalon taxa were carried out. The present study aimed to determine the major cause of the high mortality affecting farmed gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and controlling this disease condition. Fifteen diseased S. aurata were sampled from a private fish farm located at Eldeba Triangle, Damietta, fish showed external skin hemorrhages, and ulceration. Bacterial isolates retrieved from the diseased fish were identified biochemically as Pseudomonas putida and then confirmed by phylogenetic analysis of the 16 S rRNA gene sequence. P. putida was also isolated from three batches of tilapia-trash feed given to S. aurata. Biofilm and hemolytic assay indicated that all P. putida isolates produced biofilm, but 61.11% can haemolyse red blood cells. Based on the antibiotic susceptibility test results, P. putida was sensitive to florfenicol with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging between 0.25 and 1.0 µg mL− 1, but all isolates were resistant to ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Pathogenicity test revealed that P. putida isolate (recovered from the tilapia-trash feed) was virulent for S. aurata with LD50 equal to 4.67 × 107 colony forming unit (CFU) fish− 1. After intraperitoneal (IP) challenge, fish treated with 10 mg kg− 1 of florfenicol showed 16.7% mortality, while no mortality was recorded for the fish group that received 20 mg kg− 1. The non-treated fish group showed 46.7% mortality after bacterial challenge. HPLC analysis of serum florfenicol levels reached 1.07 and 2.52 µg mL− 1 at the 5th -day post-drug administration in the fish groups received 10 and 20 mg kg− 1, respectively. In conclusion, P. putida was responsible for the high mortality affecting cultured S. aurata, in-feed administration of florfenicol (20 mg kg− 1) effectively protected the challenged fish. At a time of mounting ecological crises and biodiversity loss, there is an urgent need for nature-based solutions. Equestrian properties cover a considerable proportion of the European rural and peri-urban landscape and provide much potential for integrating ecosystem services, such as the inclusion of small landscape features. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and quality of landscape features (LF) to help determine how the equine sector can contribute to the agro-ecological transition. Using a citizen science approach, 87 commercial and 420 private yard owners reported the type, frequency and geometric dimension of LFs and additional biodiversity enhancing features. A hierarchical multivariate regression was used to determine how equine property characteristics explain variation in the Percentage Property Coverage (PPC) of LFs. The model explained 47% of the variation of PPC. The variables that explained significant variation in PPC included Yard size, Number of LFs, Tree rows, Fruit orchard, Wild hedges, Flowering strips, Buffer strips, Embankments and Cluttered corners. Commercial yards are significantly larger with significantly more horses and on average only 9% (±13.87%) of the property was covered by LFs whilst private yards had significantly more coverage of LFs with on average 12% (±14.77%). These findings highlight the substantial yet untapped potential of equine yards in fostering biodiversity, suggesting that the equine sector could play an important role in the agro-ecological transition. To encourage more biodiverse-inclusive yard designs, tailored strategies should consider the diverse factors influencing equine yard design, including existing knowledge, client demands, financial considerations, and equine health and welfare. The kidney's microstructure, which comprises a highly convoluted tubular and vascular network, can only be partially revealed using classical 2D histology. Considering that the kidney's microstructure is closely related to its function and is often affected by pathologies, there is a need for powerful and high-resolution 3D imaging techniques to visualize the microstructure. Here, we present how cryogenic contrast-enhanced microCT (cryo-CECT) allowed 3D visualization of glomeruli, tubuli, and vasculature. By comparing different contrast-enhancing staining agents and freezing protocols, we found that the preferred sample preparation protocol was the combination of staining with 1:2 hafnium(IV)-substituted Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate and freezing by submersion in isopentane at −78°C. This optimized protocol showed to be highly sensitive, allowing to detect small pathology-induced microstructural changes in a mouse model of mild trauma-related acute kidney injury after thorax trauma and hemorrhagic shock. In summary, we demonstrated that cryo-CECT is an effective 3D histopathological tool that allows to enhance our understanding of kidney tissue microstructure and their related function. Simple Summary: Onion thrips are a major threat to onion crops, causing damage and yield loss. This study tested various pest control methods, including habitat manipulations, biological control agents, and physical barriers, in experimental and commercial field conditions with the aim of managing thrips populations. The results showed that modifying habitats with straw mulch and flower strips effectively reduced thrips numbers and improved onion yields. However, the use of exclusion nets had a negative effect on yields, and the other control methods produced results similar to those obtained for the untreated control. Notably, the use of biological agents on their own did not provide effective thrips control. This research provides valuable insights for sustainable and effective pest management in onion production. Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) can pose a significant threat to onion crops, causing leaf damage, reduced bulb size and quality, and yield loss during severe infestations. Conventional insecticide use has been the primary method for managing this pest species, but the efficacy of this approach is inconsistent. Furthermore, emerging pest resistance is a growing concern in some regions. This two-year field study aimed to assess the effectiveness of several pest management strategies in controlling onion thrips populations and limiting their impact on onion yields. The strategies tested consisted of habitat manipulations (including flower strips and straw mulch), biological control agents (Stratiolaelaps scimitus, Neoseiulus cucumeris, Amblyseius swirskii, and Beauveria bassiana), as well as physical barrier control methods (exclusion nets, kaolin, and mineral oil). Habitat manipulation techniques, particularly the use of flower strips, reduced thrips populations by up to 50% and increased onion yields by 25%. In contrast, exclusion nets had a detrimental effect on onion yields, and the other alternative control methods produced results comparable to those obtained for untreated controls. When used alone, biological control agents were not effective at maintaining thrips populations below economically damaging levels. Background: To better understand ischaemia-related molecular alterations, temporal changes in angiogenic Aminopeptidase N (APN/CD13) expression and glucose metabolism were assessed with PET using a rat model of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Methods: The mechanical occlusion of the base of the left hindlimb triggered using a tourniquet was applied to establish the ischaemia/reperfusion injury model in Fischer-344 rats. 2-[18F]FDG and [68Ga]Ga-NOTA-c(NGR) PET imaging performed 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days post-ischaemia induction was followed by Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining for APN/CD13 in ischaemic and control muscle tissue extracts. Results: Due to a cellular adaptation to hypoxia, a gradual increase in [68Ga]Ga-NOTA-c(NGR) and 2-[18F]FDG uptake was observed from post-intervention day 1 to 7 in the ischaemic hindlimbs, which was followed by a drop on day 10. Conforming pronounced angiogenic recovery, the NGR accretion of the ischaemic extremities differed significantly from the controls 5, 7, and 10 days after ischaemia induction (p ≤ 0.05), which correlated with the Western blot and immunohistochemical results. No remarkable radioactivity was depicted between the normally perfused hindlimbs of either the ischaemic or the control groups. Conclusions: The PET-based longitudinal assessment of angiogenesis-associated APN/CD13 expression and glucose metabolism during ischaemia may continue to broaden our knowledge on the pathophysiology of PAD. New localities are reported for the recently found in Bulgaria Ephemerum crassinervium subsp. sessile and Thamnobryum neckeroides, and the occurrence of Pseudephemerum nitidum is confirmed. THE use of medicinal plants in Morocco has a long history and plays an important role in health care of the Moroccan population. This study is one of the first ethnobotanical studies that compare the ethnomedicinal knowledge of two types of expert informants on medicinal and aromatic plants conducted in contrasted regions of Morocco. It documented medicinal plant uses in three provinces (Meknes, Fez and Taounate) using semi-structured interviews. Overall, 85 herbalists and 78 cooperative directors shared their knowledge of 151 plant species belonging to 64 families. This study revealed a rich diversity of medicinal plants in the three studied provinces, with a remarkable distinction in knowledge between herbalists and cooperative directors. Concerning the species used, the Asteraceae (16spp.), Lamiaceae (14spp.), Apiaceae (13spp.) and Fabaceae (10spp.) were the dominant families. Origanum compactum Benth was the most cited species (95%). Respiratory system diseases were the most frequent targets of the medicinal plants used (Informant agreement ratio= 0.95), whereas musculoskeletal system disorders were the lowest (0.81). This study can help identify those medicinal plants with the highest importance and utilization in these provinces. This information can hopefully be of interest to both future researchers, for pharmacological testing and conservation, and policy makers to better improve the medicinal plant research and assist those working in this sector. Wild fruits and vegetables (WFVs) have been vital to local communities for centuries and make an important contribution to daily life and income. However, traditional knowledge of the use of wild fruits is at risk of being lost due to inadequate documentation. This study aimed to secure this knowledge through intermittent field visits and a semi-structured questionnaire. Using various ethnobotanical data analysis tools and SPSS (IBM 25), this study identified 65 WFV species (52 genera and 29 families). These species, mostly consumed as vegetables (49%) or fruits (43%), were predominantly herbaceous (48%) in wild and semi-wild habitats (67%). 20 WFVs were known to local communities (highest RFC), Phoenix sylvestris stood out as the most utilized species (highest UV). Surprisingly, only 23% of the WFVs were sold at markets. The survey identified 21 unique WFVs that are rarely documented for human consumption in Pakistan (e.g., Ehretia obtusifolia, Euploca strigosa, Brassica juncea, Cleome brachycarpa, Gymnosporia royleana, Cucumis maderaspatanus, Croton bonplandianus, Euphorbia prostrata, Vachellia nilotica, Pongamia pinnata, Grewia asiatica, Malvastrum coromandelianum, Morus serrata, Argemone mexicana, Bambusa vulgaris, Echinochloa colonum, Solanum virginianum, Physalis angulata, Withania somnifera, Zygophyllum creticum, and Peganum harmala), as well as 14 novel uses and five novel edible parts. Despite their ecological importance, the use of WFVs has declined because local people are unaware of their cultural and economic value. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder of unknown etiology. The leading hypothesis involves an antigen-triggered dysregulated T-cell-driven immunologic response leading to non-necrotic granulomas. In cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), the inflammatory response can lead to fibrosis, culminating in clinical manifestations such as atrioventricular block and ventricular arrhythmias. Cardiac manifestations frequently present as first and isolated signs or may appear in conjunction with extracardiac manifestations. The incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) is high. Diagnosis remains a challenge. For a definite diagnosis, endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is suggested. In clinical practice, compatible findings in advanced imaging using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and/or positron emission tomography (PET) in combination with extracardiac histological proof is considered sufficient. Management revolves around the control of myocardial inflammation by employing immunosuppression. However, data regarding efficacy are merely based on observational evidence. Prevention of SCD is of particular importance and several guidelines provide recommendations regarding device therapy. In patients with manifest CS, outcome data indicate a 5-year survival of around 90% and a 10-year survival in the range of 80%. Data for patients with silent CS are conflicting; some studies suggest an overall benign course of disease while others reported contrasting observations. Future research challenges involve better understanding of the immunologic pathogenesis of the disease for a targeted therapy, improving imaging to aid early diagnosis, assessing the need for screening of asymptomatic patients and randomized trials. Vascular diseases pose major health challenges, and understanding their underlying molecular mechanisms is essential to advance therapeutic interventions. Cellular senescence, a hallmark of aging, is a cellular state characterized by cell-cycle arrest, a senescence-associated secretory phenotype macromolecular damage, and metabolic dysregulation. Vascular senescence has been demonstrated to play a key role in different vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, peripheral arterial disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, chronic venous disease, and venous ulcers. Even though cellular senescence was first described in 1961, significant gaps persist in comprehending the epigenetic mechanisms driving vascular senescence and its subsequent inflammatory response. Through a comprehensive analysis, we aim to elucidate these knowledge gaps by exploring the network of epigenetic alterations that contribute to vascular senescence. In addition, we describe the consequent inflammatory cascades triggered by these epigenetic modifications. Background: Phytopathogenic fungi remain the main infectious agents in plants, causing severe damage to the environment and human health. Thus, to reduce the usage of synthetically derived fungicides and perform agricultural crop production, the search for new control strategies including plant extracts constitutes an eco-friendly and safe alternative. Objectives: This study aimed to quantify the phytochemical constituents of the three plant (Mentha pulegium L., Mentha spicata L., and Mentha longifolia L.) extracts and to screen their phytochemical composition including total phenolic (TPC), flavonoids (TFC) and condensed tannins contents (TCTC), and to evaluate their antioxidant activities. The efficacy of all mint extracts will be investigated against phytopathogenic fungal species. Materials and Methods: The three plant extracts were screened to assess their total phenolic, flavonoids, and condensed tannin contents using spectrophotometric assays. The antioxidant activities include 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and β-carotene assays. The antifungal activities were investigated on phytopathogenic species including Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Trichoderma sp. Results: Quantitative analyses of phytochemical constituents of Mentha genus extracts revealed that both ethyl acetate (EtAc) and chloroformic (Chl) extracts are a rich source of phenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins. Ethyl acetate extract of M. longifolia (EtAc L) displayed the highest content of phenols (69.9 ± 1.35 mg GAE/g DW) and flavonoids (53.26 ± 2.11 mg CE/g DW), while M. pulegium ethyl acetate extract (EtAc P) has the highest condensed tannins content (2.13 ± 0.4 mg CE/g DW). Moreover, the tested extracts exhibited potent antioxidant activities at low concentrations for EtAc L, followed by M. spicata (EtAc S), and EtAc P (IC50 = 35.76 ± 1.32 µg/mL for scavenging DPPH free radicals; EC50 527.96 ± 5.45 µg/mL for FRAP, and IC50 = 106.3 ± 3.75 µg/mL for β-carotene bleaching test). Finally, all tested extracts were able to inhibit the growth of several phytopathogenic micro-organisms on both agar and broth media. Conclusion: The Mentha extracts derived from the three mint species (i.e., L, P, and S) could be used for their antifungal activities to provide sustainable crop pest management. Recent rapid economic and infrastructure growth in India has led to degraded environmental conditions. Congested and densely populated urban areas have seen increased pollution, water pollution, and habitat and biodiversity loss. Urban green spaces (UGSs) are vital for improving such environmental qualities and coping with environmental challenges within cities. UGSs provide numerous tangible and intangible environmental, recreational/social, and economic benefits, also acknowledged as ecosystem services. This study assessed residents' perceptions of UGSs ecosystem services in Delhi, India. The main objectives were to (1) understand residents' visiting patterns of UGSs and corresponding socio-economic correlations (2) assess residents' knowledge and perceptions of ecosystem services and disservices, and (3) ranking of ecosystem services provided by UGSs based on significance to the residents. This study is based on a survey of 620 randomly selected respondents in UGSs throughout the city. Most respondents knew about ecosystem services in UGSs and believed the ecosystem services outweighed any ecosystem disservices. The results also showed the importance of improving urban microclimate and environmental quality was emphasized. Interestingly, ecosystem services like improve mental health and aesthetic beauty rated high. The improvement of wildlife habitat, fresh water, water flow regulation & runoff mitigation and the collection of fuelwood, fruits, honey and medicine were not seen as important by the respondents. Residents more readily recognized UGSs' direct benefits over the indirect benefits. Awareness of economic benefit was relatively high. The advent of automatic pollen and fungal spore monitoring over the past few years has brought about a paradigm change. The provision of real-time information at high temporal resolution opens the door to a wide range of improvements in terms of the products and services made available to a widening range of end-users and stakeholders. As technology and methods mature, it is essential to properly quantify the impact automatic monitoring has on the different end-user domains to better understand the real long-term benefits to society. In this paper, we focus the main domains where such impacts are expected, using Europe as a basis to provide qualitative estimates and to describe research needs to better quantify impacts in future. Our study aimed to quantify the pollen trapped by the seeds and relate it with the airborne pollen concentrations. Individual Populus spp. tuft-like seeds were sampled while suspended twice a day in 2017 and 2018 during the seed dispersal season. The seeds were submitted to laboratory treatment for pollen extraction, which was quantified using an optical microscope. Airborne pollen was monitored using a seven-day Hirst-type volumetric spore sampler. A correlation analysis was performed between the airborne pollen, the pollen on the seeds, and the meteorological parameters. A total of 26 pollen grains/mg was counted in the airborne tuft-like seeds, with 26 different taxa being identified, compared with the 18 pollen taxa identified in the airborne samples. Quercus, Poaceae, Urticaceae, Pinus, and Platanus were the most frequent pollen found on the seeds, while in the atmosphere, pollen from Urticaceae, Quercus, and Cupressaceae were the most representative. A tendency of higher pollen concentrations found in the afternoon samples, both airborne and on the seeds, was observed. Correlations between the meteorological parameters and pollen concentration found airborne and in the seeds were overall not significant. Thus, airborne poplar tuft-like seeds can trap and transport pollen, most of which has been recognized to induce respiratory allergies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Societal Impact statement: Reduced fungicide use lowers environmental pollution and enables safer food production. The usage of fungicides in apple orchards can be reduced through the application of sanitation practices which decrease the inoculum sources of apple scab disease on fallen leaves. This study found two non‐chemical sanitation practices, namely the collection of fallen leaves (CFL) and CFL combined with straw mulch in tree rows, were beneficial. These two practices are not only biologically and environmentally valuable, as they reduce disease levels and can replace chemical fungicides, but they are also economically efficient options for integrated and organic orchards compared to non‐sanitized ones. Summary: Severe fungicide use can be reduced by applications of sanitation practices in order to reduce scab incidence, yield and fruit quality losses in apple orchards. In a 5‐year study, we aimed to investigate the effect of sanitation practices on biological and cost–benefit parameters in two sustainable apple management systems, and to find significant correlations among the parameters.We investigated the effect of five sanitation treatments (lime sulphur, leaf collection, mulching, lime sulphur + leaf collection, leaf collection + mulching) on four biological (scab incidence, fruit parameters: total yield, yield class I and II) and seven cost–benefit (three cost types, three annual revenue types, income surplus/deficit) parameters in integrated and organic apple orchards. Correlation, linear regression and principal component analyses (PCA) were performed to find correlations among biological and cost–benefit parameters.Results showed that fruit scab incidence was 3.4–8.1 times higher, while total yield was 1.4–1.8 times lower in the organic management system than in the integrated one. The treatment of leaf collection and/or leaf collection + mulching showed higher total cost (180.3 and 675.2 EUR ha−1) but lower scab incidence (5.3 and 27.3%; 4.8 and 26.7%, integrated and organic, respectively) and higher yield with greater total revenues (10,235 and 10,329 EUR ha−1; 8,136 and 8,230 EUR ha−1, integrated and organic, respectively) and income surpluses (851 and 451 EUR ha−1; 897 and 496 EUR ha−1, integrated and organic, respectively) compared to non‐sanitized control treatments in most cases. Other sanitation treatments provided fewer biological and/or no financial benefits. Results from correlation and linear regression analyses indicated strong relationships among the factors of total yield vs surplus, class I vs surplus, and fruit scab vs class II) in both management systems. Further relationships were detected among almost all parameters in the PCA.Overall, our study demonstrated that two non‐chemical sanitation treatments could not only reduce scab incidence and increase fruit yield, but could show positive cost–benefit outcomes in both management systems. The Campus of the Sapienza University of Rome, frequented daily by several thousands of students and workers, collects allergenic airborne pollen from many sources. Here, we report the results of detailed pollen monitoring of 49 pollen types within the University Campus, allowing us to trace the main local and regional sources of airborne pollen throughout the year. The amount of allergenic pollen has been calculated for each daily record to evaluate the risk of exposure for students and workers on Campus in relation to academic activities and to suggest possible mitigation measures. Our results show that the maximum pollen concentrations are recorded from March to May, and the highest floristic richness occurs in April–June. We distinguish massive local pollen producers from pollen of regional origin and local ornamental and invasive taxa. Pollen with extreme allergenicity is dominant from mid-January to mid-March and in May with Cupressaceae/Taxaceae, Corylus and Olea; high allergenicity from late March to late April with Platanus, Ostrya, Ginkgo and Moraceae; and medium allergenicity from late April to the beginning of May with Quercus and Pinus. In August–December, pollen concentration is relatively low. Diversified mitigation actions are suggested in relation to the provenance, allergenicity and emission period of pollen. In this study, we tested the use of lichen biomonitoring techniques for the assessment of air quality disparities at the urban scale. We based our evaluation on the results of a previous lichen biomonitoring study carried out in Milan (Northern Italy), which estimates the contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and its distribution over the area, also providing an evaluation of the main emission sources. Therefore, we used the traditional methodologies for environmental justice assessment: the proximity-based and the distribution-based approaches. The workflow we propose is a data-driven selection of emission sources that contributes to overcoming the dichotomy between the two approaches and is now widely debated in the scientific community. A socio-economic deprivation index was elaborated for each census unit of Milan city and then related to the proximity of the emission sources previously selected. The results suggested that in the surrounding of industries and railways, the deprivation is higher, while the proximity of main roads is inhabited by wealthier populations. The distribution-based approach was run through a quantile regression analysis, and the outcome indicated that among the wealthier groups, an increase in contamination is followed by an increase in socio-economic deprivation, whilst among the deprived groups, people with greater economic opportunities tend, however, to live in worse air quality conditions due to the proximity of communication routes. This study poses the potential to review the classical methods of EJ assessment, providing a reliable workflow applicable in urban areas—the most vulnerable in terms of air quality disparities in the present and in the future. The development of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, aimed at reducing pesticide use, has myriad ecological and agronomic benefits to terrestrial ecosystems and the environment, but can also lead to different biological and economic outcomes depending on the production system. The most common facet of IPM in apple is the reduction and/or alternative use of pesticides but also includes cultural, mechanical and biological controls. Using apple as a model system, we performed a meta-analysis of 55 studies from 20 countries to quantify the effects of IPM on beneficial invertebrates, pest and disease pressure, and crop productivity (i.e., fruit yield and quality). We also explored different feeding guilds (i.e., tissue-chewing, sap-sucking or boring/mining herbivores, and beneficial natural enemy predators or parasitoids) to determine whether invertebrate responses to IPM differ between feeding strategies. By scoring IPM adoption based on the relative number of facets of IPM used in each study, we also determined whether the level of IPM implemented in apple farming systems alters the responses of invertebrates and pathogens. Our results demonstrate how IPM adoption increases the performance of natural enemies, while simultaneously reducing pest and disease pressure overall. However, the effects of IPM on disease pressure may depend on the level of IPM adoption because disease pressure increased when multiple facets of IPM were adopted (i.e., as the level of IPM adoption increased). Apple quality was not limited by IPM adoption, yet fruit yield decreased overall. While both natural enemy feeding guilds (predators and parasitoids) responded positively to IPM adoption, only two of the three pest feeding guilds (tissue-chewing and sap-sucking herbivores) decreased under IPM, with boring/mining herbivores showing no response. These results demonstrate the complex benefits and limitations that can occur under IPM and call for economic risk assessments based on these differences. The current study was intended to determine the effects of humanin analogue (HNG) supplementation on semen freezability and oxidative stress parameters of cryopreserved bull spermatozoa. A total of 24 semen ejaculates, from Frieswal breeding bulls, were selected for the experiment. Samples with ≥70% progressive motility, ≥500 million spermatozoa/mL, and >2 mL volume were utilized for further processing, supplementation, and cryopreservation. Each sample was divided into four equal groups and the experiment consisted of three treatment groups and one control group. In the control group, the spermatozoa were frozen in an extender without HNG, while in the other three groups, HNG supplementation was done at a concentration of 2, 10, and 20 μM, respectively. The fortification of HNG at a concentration of 10 and 20 µM significantly (p < 0.05) improved the percent post-thaw motility and kinetic variables as assessed by CASA, viability, acrosome- and plasma membrane-integrity as compared to 2 µM and control group. The supplementation showed significant (p < 0.05) controlled oxidative stress as exhibited by a reduction in lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species levels. The supplemented groups also exhibited significant (p < 0.05) improvements in total antioxidant levels, increased mean percentage of spermatozoa exhibiting high mitochondrial membrane potential, DNA integrity, acrosome-intact noncapacitated spermatozoa, and zona binding ability. In conclusion, the supplementation of humanin analogue at 10 and 20 µM significantly improved the post-thaw semen quality, functional parameters, and zona binding ability and controlled the oxidative stress in cryopreserved spermatozoa. Thus, the supplementation of its analogue may potentially prove to be a valuable approach for the improvement of semen freezability in crossbred Frieswal bulls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Populations of natural enemies of insect pests are declining owing to agricultural intensification and indiscriminate use of pesticides, and this may be exacerbated in agricultural systems that clear all margin plants after the cropping season for other uses such as fodder. Retaining a diversity of noncrop flowering vegetation outside the cropping season may support more resilient and effective natural pest regulation. Methods: We tested the potential for non-crop vegetation to support natural enemies in fields across two locations after harvesting the primary crops of lablab and maize. Results: A total of 54 plant species were recorded across the sites in Kenya with 59% of them being annuals and 41% perennials. There was a significant seasonal variation in plant species richness (ANOVA: F1, 16 = 33. 45; P< 0.0001) and diversity (ANOVA: F1, 16 = 7.20; P = 0.0511). While time since harvesting was a significant factor influencing the overall abundance of natural enemies (ANOVA: F2, 1,133 = 8.11; P< 0.0001), they were generally higher in abundance in locations with margin plants or where a diversity of margin plants was observed. Discussion: These findings demonstrate that flowering plants in agricultural systems offer refuge and alternative food for natural enemies and potentially other beneficial insects between cropping seasons. The conservation of natural enemies between crops may lead to more effective natural pest regulation early in the following crop, thus reducing reliance on insecticides application.
