A data‐driven model for predicting the surface temperature using neural networks was proposed to alleviate the computational burden of numerical weather prediction (NWP). Our model, named TPTNet uses only 2 m temperature measured at the weather stations of the South Korean Peninsula as input to predict the local temperature at finite forecast hours. The turbulent fluctuation component of the temperature was extracted from the station measurements by separating the climatology component accounting for the yearly and daily variations. The effect of station altitude was then compensated by introducing a potential temperature. The resulting turbulent potential temperature (TPT) data at irregularly distributed stations were used as input for predicting the TPT at forecast hours through three trained networks based on convolutional neural network, Swin Transformer, and a graph neural network. By comparing the prediction performance of our network with that of persistence and NWP, we found that our model can make predictions comparable to NWP for up to 12 hr. Plain Language Summary: We developed a new model called TPTNet to predict local temperatures using only temperature measurements from weather stations in South Korea. This model aims to reduce the heavy computational demands of traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) methods. By analyzing 20 years of data, we separated the regular temperature patterns that change yearly and daily from the more unpredictable fluctuations. We also adjusted the model for the altitude of each weather station. We trained three different types of neural networks for this purpose: a convolutional neural network, a Swin Transformer, and a graph neural network. When we tested our model with new data from 2020, it made reliable temperature predictions for up to 12 hr, performing as well as, or even better than, traditional NWP methods. Aims Mammography, commonly used for breast cancer screening in women, can also predict cardiovascular disease. We developed mammography-based deep learning models for predicting coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores, an established predictor of coronary events. Methods and results We evaluated a subset of Korean adults who underwent image mammography and CAC computed tomography and randomly selected approximately 80% of the participants as the training dataset, used to develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict detectable CAC. The sensitivity, specificity, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), and overall accuracy of the model's performance were evaluated. The training and validation datasets included 5235 and 1208 women, respectively [mean age, 52.6 (±10.2) years], including non-zero cases (46.8%). The CNN-based deep learning prediction model based on the Resnet18 model showed the best performance. The model was further improved using contrastive learning strategies based on positive and negative samples: sensitivity, 0.764 (95% CI, 0.667–0.830); specificity, 0.652 (95% CI, 0.614–0.710); AUROC, 0.761 (95% CI, 0.742–0.780); and accuracy, 70.8% (95% CI, 68.8–72.4). Moreover, including age and menopausal status in the model further improved its performance (AUROC, 0.776; 95% CI, 0.762–0.790). The Framingham risk score yielded an AUROC of 0.736 (95% CI, 0.712–0.761). Conclusion Mammography-based deep learning models showed promising results for predicting CAC, performing comparably to conventional risk models. This indicates mammography's potential for dual-risk assessment in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. Gastric cancer is a significant health concern, particularly in Korea, and its accurate detection is crucial for effective treatment. However, a gastroscopic biopsy can be time-consuming and may, thus, delay diagnosis and treatment. Thus, this study proposed a gastric cancer diagnostic method, CADx, to facilitate a more efficient image analysis. Owing to the challenges in collecting medical image data, small datasets are often used in this field. To overcome this limitation, we used AutoAugment's ImageNet policy and applied cut-and-paste techniques using a sliding window algorithm to further increase the size of the dataset. The results showed an accuracy of 0.8317 for T-stage 1 and T-stage 4 image classification and an accuracy of 0.8417 for early gastric cancer and normal image classification, indicating improvements of 7 and 9%, respectively. Furthermore, through the application of test-time augmentation to the early gastric cancer and normal image datasets, the image classification accuracy was improved by 5.8% to 0.9000. This study examines the effectiveness of various deep learning algorithms in nowcasting using weather radar data from South Korea. Herein, the algorithms examined include RainNet, ConvLSTM2D U-Net, a U-Net-based recursive model, and a generative adversarial network. Moreover, this study used S-band radar data from the Ministry of Environment to assess the predictive performance of these models. Results show the efficacy of these algorithms in short-term rainfall prediction. Specifically, for a threshold of 0.1 mm/h, the recursive RainNet model achieved a critical success index (CSI) of 0.826, an F1 score of 0.781, and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.378. However, for a higher threshold of 5 mm/h, the model achieved an average CSI of 0.498, an F1 score of 0.577, and a MAE of 0.307. Furthermore, some models exhibited spatial smoothing issues with increasing rainfall-prediction times. Background: The Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT) has been widely used to evaluate the neurocognitive functions in various clinical groups with a broad range of ages. However, despite its usefulness, the scoring method is as complex as the figure. Such a complicated scoring system can lead to the risk of reducing the extent of agreement among raters. Although several attempts have been made to use RCFT in clinical settings in a digitalized format, little attention has been given to develop direct automatic scoring that is comparable to experienced psychologists. Therefore, we aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) scoring system for RCFT using a deep learning (DL) algorithm and confirmed its validity. Methods: A total of 6680 subjects were enrolled in the Gwangju Alzheimer's and Related Dementia cohort registry, Korea, from January 2015 to June 2021. We obtained 20,040 scanned images using three images per subject (copy, immediate recall, and delayed recall) and scores rated by 32 experienced psychologists. We trained the automated scoring system using the DenseNet architecture. To increase the model performance, we improved the quality of training data by re-examining some images with poor results (mean absolute error (MAE) ≥ 5 [points]) and re-trained our model. Finally, we conducted an external validation with 150 images scored by five experienced psychologists. Results: For fivefold cross-validation, our first model obtained MAE = 1.24 [points] and R-squared ( R 2 ) = 0.977. However, after evaluating and updating the model, the performance of the final model was improved (MAE = 0.95 [points], R 2 = 0.986). Predicted scores among cognitively normal, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia were significantly different. For the 150 independent test sets, the MAE and R 2 between AI and average scores by five human experts were 0.64 [points] and 0.994, respectively. Conclusion: We concluded that there was no fundamental difference between the rating scores of experienced psychologists and those of our AI scoring system. We expect that our AI psychologist will be able to contribute to screen the early stages of Alzheimer's disease pathology in medical checkup centers or large-scale community-based research institutes in a faster and cost-effective way. Background: A considerable volume of possible applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of rhinology exists, and research in the area is rapidly evolving. Objective: This scoping review aims to provide a brief overview of all current literature on AI in the field of rhinology. Further, it aims to highlight gaps in the literature for future rhinology researchers. Methods: OVID MEDLINE (1946-2022) and EMBASE (1974-2022) were searched from January 1, 2017 until May 14, 2022 to identify all relevant articles. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist was used to guide the review. Results: A total of 2420 results were identified of which 62 met the eligibility criteria. A further 17 articles were included through bibliography searching, for a total of 79 articles on AI in rhinology. Each year resulted in an increase in the number of publications, from 3 articles published in 2017 to 31 articles published in 2021. Articles were produced by authors from 22 countries with a relative majority coming from the USA (19%), China (19%), and South Korea (13%). Articles were placed into 1 of 5 categories: phenotyping/endotyping (n = 12), radiological diagnostics (n = 42), prognostication (n = 10), non-radiological diagnostics (n = 7), surgical assessment/planning (n = 8). Diagnostic or prognostic utility of the AI algorithms were rated as excellent (n = 29), very good (n = 25), good (n = 7), sufficient (n = 1), bad (n = 2), or was not reported/not applicable (n = 15). Conclusions: AI is experiencing an increasingly significant role in rhinology research. Articles are showing high rates of diagnostic accuracy and are being published at an almost exponential rate around the world. Utilizing AI in radiological diagnosis was the most published topic of research, however, AI in rhinology is still in its infancy and there are several topics yet to be thoroughly explored. Although ultrasound plays an important role in the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD), image interpretation requires extensive training. High operator variability and limited image quality control of ultrasound images have made the application of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) challenging. This study assessed the effect of integrating computer-extracted measurable features with the convolutional neural network (CNN) on the ultrasound image CAD accuracy of CKD. Ultrasound images from patients who visited Severance Hospital and Gangnam Severance Hospital in South Korea between 2011 and 2018 were used. A Mask regional CNN model was used for organ segmentation and measurable feature extraction. Data on kidney length and kidney-to-liver echogenicity ratio were extracted. The ResNet18 model classified kidney ultrasound images into CKD and non-CKD. Experiments were conducted with and without the input of the measurable feature data. The performance of each model was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). A total of 909 patients (mean age, 51.4 ± 19.3 years; 414 [49.5%] men and 495 [54.5%] women) were included in the study. The average AUROC from the model trained using ultrasound images achieved a level of 0.81. Image training with the integration of automatically extracted kidney length and echogenicity features revealed an improved average AUROC of 0.88. This value further increased to 0.91 when the clinical information of underlying diabetes was also included in the model trained with CNN and measurable features. The automated step-wise machine learning–aided model segmented, measured, and classified the kidney ultrasound images with high performance. Harmful algal bloom (HAB) caused by Magalefidinium polykrikoides becomes frequent in Korean coastal waters during the mid-1990s and is now annual events on the southern coast of Korea. HAB often leads to high rates of fish mortality and subsequent economic losses in aquaculture. In addition, non-harmful algal blooms (non-HABs) caused by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium sp., Mesodinium rubrum , and the diatom Skeletonema sp. occur simultaneously in time and space. Because HAB and non-HABs are difficult to discriminate using multi-band satellite data, most previous studies have attempted only detection or qualitative classification with limited data. In contrast, in this current study, we aimed to quantitatively discriminate M. polykrikoides bloom associated HAB from non-HABs around the southern coast of Korea using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) imagery with a spatial resolution of 300 m and 16 spectral bands for the first time. To identify the effect of non-HAB patches on the performance of the CNN model, five CNN models were trained with OLCI images as input and ground-truth HAB maps as output data. The appropriate figure-of-merits values (FOMs) with sensitivity of 0.53, precision of 0.92, and F-measure of 0.67 were reasonable when the CNN model trained using the dataset with the highest ratio of non-HABs patches was applied to HAB images. Even when non-HAB images were applied to the models, the CNN model exhibited the lowest error pixel count. Therefore, we confirmed that the CNN model, which can discriminate red tide blooms with subtle differences between the spectrum bands and spatial characteristics, helps solve the complexity and ambiguity in discriminating HAB from non-HABs. Despite various economic crisis situations around the world, the courier and delivery service market continues to be revitalized. The parcel shipping volume in Korea is currently 3.37 billion parcels, achieving a growth rate of about 140% compared to 2012, and 70% of parcels are from metropolitan areas. Given the above statistics, this paper focused on the development of an underground logistics system (ULS), in order to conduct a study to handle the freight volume in a more eco-friendly manner in the center of metropolitan areas. In this paper we first analyzed the points at which parcel boxes were damaged, based on a ULS. After collecting image data of the parcel boxes, the damaged parcel boxes were detected and classified using computerized methods, in particular, a convolutional neural network (CNN), MobileNet. For image classification, Google Colaboratory notebook was used and 4882 images were collected for the experiment. Based on the collected dataset, when conducting the experiment, the accuracy, recall, and specificity of classification for the testing set were 84.6%, 82% and 88.54%, respectively,. To validate the usefulness of the MobileNet algorithm, additional experiments were performed under the same conditions using other algorithms, VGG16 and ResNet50. The results show that MobileNet is superior to other image classification models when comparing test time. Thus, in the future, MobileNet has the potential to be used for identifying damaged boxes, and could be used to ensure the reliability and safety of parcel boxes based on a ULS. With recent advancements in image processing and printing technology, home printers have improved in performance and grown more widespread. As such, they have been increasingly used in counterfeiting and forgery. Most counterfeit bills in Korea have been created using home scanners and printers. The identification of printer model is thus necessary to rapidly track down criminals and solve crimes. Household printers can be largely divided into inkjet and laser printers. These two types of printers print halftone textures instead of continuous images. This study proposed a technique of printer classification based on halftone textures that can be observed in printed documents. Since halftone textures are expressed as periodic lattices, the images were transformed via FFT, which is highly effective at expressing periodicity. ResNet, known for its superior gradient flow, was used for training. The experiment was conducted on 12 color laser jets and 2 inkjets. Scans of bills printed by each printer were used, and halftone texture analysis was performed on these images for printer model classification. Each image was cropped into several parts; one of the cropped parts was analyzed. The analysis showed that laser printers could be 100% distinguished from inkjet printers. An accuracy of 98.44% was achieved in make classification. When 50 cropped images were used instead of a single image, the technique achieved 100% accuracy in model classification. The proposed technique is non‐destructive; it offers high accessibility and efficiency as it can be performed using a scanner alone, without requiring additional optical equipment. Abusive behaviors have become a common issue in many online social media platforms. Profanity is common form of abusive behavior in online. Social media platforms operate the filtering system using popular profanity words lists, but this method has drawbacks that it can be bypassed using an altered form and it can detect normal sentences as profanity. Especially in Korean language, the syllable is composed of graphemes and words are composed of multiple syllables, it can be decomposed into graphemes without impairing the transmission of meaning, and the form of a profane word can be seen as a different meaning in a sentence. This work focuses on the problem of filtering system mis-detecting normal phrases with profane phrases. For that, we proposed the deep learning-based framework including grapheme and syllable separation-based word embedding and appropriate CNN structure. Background: The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) innervates and regulates the sensation of the mandibular teeth and lower lip. The position of the IAN should be monitored prior to surgery. Therefore, a study using artificial intelligence (AI) was planned to image and track the position of the IAN automatically for a quicker and safer surgery. Methods: A total of 138 cone-beam computed tomography datasets (Internal: 98, External: 40) collected from multiple centers (three hospitals) were used in the study. A customized 3D nnU-Net was used for image segmentation. Active learning, which consists of three steps, was carried out in iterations for 83 datasets with cumulative additions after each step. Subsequently, the accuracy of the model for IAN segmentation was evaluated using the 50 datasets. The accuracy by deriving the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) value and the segmentation time for each learning step were compared. In addition, visual scoring was considered to comparatively evaluate the manual and automatic segmentation. Results: After learning, the DSC gradually increased to 0.48 ± 0.11 to 0.50 ± 0.11, and 0.58 ± 0.08. The DSC for the external dataset was 0.49 ± 0.12. The times required for segmentation were 124.8, 143.4, and 86.4 s, showing a large decrease at the final stage. In visual scoring, the accuracy of manual segmentation was found to be higher than that of automatic segmentation. Featured Application: The underwater target classification algorithm proposed in this paper can be applied to an active sonar system to detect long-range targets. Detection and classification of unidentified underwater targets maneuvering in complex underwater environments are critical for active sonar systems. In previous studies, many detection methods were applied to separate targets from the clutter using signals that exceed a preset threshold determined by the sonar console operator. This is because the high signal-to-noise ratio target has enough feature vector components to separate. However, in a real environment, the signal-to-noise ratio of the received target does not always exceed the threshold. Therefore, a target detection algorithm for various target signal-to-noise ratio environments is required; strong clutter energy can lead to false detection, while weak target signals reduce the probability of detection. It also uses long pulse repetition intervals for long-range detection and high ambient noise, requiring classification processing for each ping without accumulating pings. In this study, a target classification algorithm is proposed that can be applied to signals in real underwater environments above the noise level without a threshold set by the sonar console operator, and the classification performance of the algorithm is verified. The active sonar for long-range target detection has low-resolution data; thus, feature vector extraction algorithms are required. Feature vectors are extracted from the experimental data using Power-Normalized Cepstral Coefficients for target classification. Feature vectors are also extracted with Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients and compared with the proposed algorithm. A convolutional neural network was employed as the classifier. In addition, the proposed algorithm is to be compared with the result of target classification using a spectrogram and convolutional neural network. Experimental data were obtained using a hull-mounted active sonar system operating on a Korean naval ship in the East Sea of South Korea and a real maneuvering underwater target. From the experimental data with 29 pings, we extracted 361 target and 3351 clutter data. It is difficult to collect real underwater target data from the real sea environment. Therefore, the number of target data was increased using the data augmentation technique. Eighty percent of the data was used for training and the rest was used for testing. Accuracy value curves and classification rate tables are presented for performance analysis and discussion. Results showed that the proposed algorithm has a higher classification rate than Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients without affecting the target classification by the signal level. Accurate electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation is crucial in the clinical ECG workflow because it is most likely associated with a disease that can cause major problems in the body. In this study, we proposed an ECG-signal multi-classification model using deep learning. We used a squeeze-and-excitation residual network (SE-ResNet), which is a residual network(ResNet) with a squeeze-and-excitation block. Experiments were performed for seven different types of lead-II ECG data obtained from the Korea University Anam Hospital in South Korea. These seven types are normal sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, premature ventricular contraction and first-degree atrioventricular block. We compared the SE-ResNet with a ResNet, as a baseline model, for various depths of layer (18/34/50/101/152). We confirmed that the SE-ResNet had better classification performance than the ResNet, for all layers. The SE-ResNet classifier with 152 layers achieved F1 scores of 97.05% for seven-class classifications. Our model surpassed the baseline model, ResNet, by +1.40% for the seven-class classifications. This paper is concerned with posture recognition using ensemble convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in home environments. With the increasing number of elderly people living alone at home, posture recognition is very important for helping elderly people cope with sudden danger. Traditionally, to recognize posture, it was necessary to obtain the coordinates of the body points, depth, frame information of video, and so on. In conventional machine learning, there is a limitation in recognizing posture directly using only an image. However, with advancements in the latest deep learning, it is possible to achieve good performance in posture recognition using only an image. Thus, we performed experiments based on VGGNet, ResNet, DenseNet, InceptionResNet, and Xception as pre-trained CNNs using five types of preprocessing. On the basis of these deep learning methods, we finally present the ensemble deep model combined by majority and average methods. The experiments were performed by a posture database constructed at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea. This database consists of 51,000 images with 10 postures from 51 home environments. The experimental results reveal that the ensemble system by InceptionResNetV2s with five types of preprocessing shows good performance in comparison to other combination methods and the pre-trained CNN itself. While the exchange of data files or programs on the Internet grows exponentially, most users are vulnerable to infected files, especially to malicious non-executables. Due to the circumstances between South and North Korea, many malicious actions have recently been found in Hangul Word Processor (HWP) non-executable files because the HWP is widely used in schools, military facilities, and government institutions of South Korea. The HWP file usually has one or more byte streams that are often used for the malicious actions. Based on an assumption that infected byte streams have particular patterns, we design a convolutional neural network (CNN) to grasp such patterns. We conduct experiments on our prepared 534 HWP files, and demonstrate that the proposed CNN achieves the best performance compared to other machine learning models. The ocean environment has a significant influence on aquaculture, marine transportation, and the construction of coastal and offshore structures. In this regard, we describe a deep-learning based wave height classification method using monoscopic ocean videos. Images and videos as input for learning were obtained using a monoscopic camera, and the wave height was measured using an acoustic Doppler current profiler installed in the southwestern area of Korea. Initially, the sea states and average wave height were classified from single snapshots using only a convolutional neural network (CNN). Subsequently, the average wave height was classified from sequential snapshots using a combined deep learning algorithm with long short-term memory (LSTM) and CNN. The combined network with an appropriate data augmentation was found to be effective and showed good performance. Inter-floor noise, i.e., noise transmitted from one floor to another floor through walls or ceilings in an apartment building or an office of a multi-layered structure, causes serious social problems in South Korea. Notably, inaccurate identification of the noise type and position by human hearing intensifies the conflicts between residents of apartment buildings. In this study, we propose a robust approach using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn and identify the type and position of inter-floor noise. Using a single mobile device, we collected nearly 2000 inter-floor noise events that contain 5 types of inter-floor noises generated at 9 different positions on three floors in a Seoul National University campus building. Based on pre-trained CNN models designed and evaluated separately for type and position classification, we achieved type and position classification accuracy of 99.5% and 95.3%, respectively in validation datasets. In addition, the robustness of noise type classification with the model was checked against a new test dataset. This new dataset was generated in the building and contains 2 types of inter-floor noises at 10 new positions. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major global health concern. Its early diagnosis is extremely important, as it determines treatment options and strongly influences the length of survival. Histologic diagnosis can be made by pathologists based on images of tissues obtained from a colonoscopic biopsy. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs)—i.e., deep neural networks (DNNs) specifically adapted to image data—have been employed to effectively classify or locate tumors in many types of cancer. Colorectal histology images of 28 normal and 29 tumor samples were obtained from the National Cancer Center, South Korea, and cropped into 6806 normal and 3474 tumor images. We developed five modifications of the system from the Visual Geometry Group (VGG), the winning entry in the classification task in the 2014 ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Competition (ILSVRC) and examined them in two experiments. In the first experiment, we determined the best modified VGG configuration for our partial dataset, resulting in accuracies of 82.50%, 87.50%, 87.50%, 91.40%, and 94.30%, respectively. In the second experiment, the best modified VGG configuration was applied to evaluate the performance of the CNN model. Subsequently, using the entire dataset on the modified VGG-E configuration, the highest results for accuracy, loss, sensitivity, and specificity, respectively, were 93.48%, 0.4385, 95.10%, and 92.76%, which equates to correctly classifying 294 normal images out of 309 and 667 tumor images out of 719. LS has become a significant challenge in South Korea due to its many abandoned coal mines. Therefore, preparing LS zoning maps is vital to controlling damage caused by LS. In this study, genetic algorithm (GA) and binary whale optimization algorithm were used to select the most influential conditioning factors from the initial set of 19 factors. Subsequently, the whale optimization algorithm, and Laplacian whale optimization algorithm (LXWOA) were utilized to determine the optimal hyperparameter values for the convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The results showed that the CNN-GA-LXWOA algorithm provided a more accurate and reliable LS susceptibility map, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.9606, root mean square error of 0.2974 and accuracy of 91.09%. This algorithm covered 95.6% of past subsidence occurrences in the high and very high LS susceptibility classes, demonstrating its suitability for predicting future subsidence areas. We found that six main factors (elevation, drift, lineament density, slope, distance to railroads, and railroad density) control LS occurrence in Taebaek, followed by groundwater depth, lithology, and profile curvature. The proposed model may be applied for other regions with different parameters and environmental factors due to its flexible structure. Purpose The pathological cascade of Alzheimer's disease (AD) begins decades before the development of clinical symptoms (Jack et al, 2010). Thus, predicting Alzheimer's before disease onset can minimize the socioeconomic burden and delay the cognitive impairments of patients. The Rey-complex figure task (RCFT) was revisited as the sensitive neurocognitive evaluator that is associated with cerebrospinal fluid amyloid β, tau levels and neurodegeneration observed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (Seo et al, 2021). But the application of these findings is limited in real life. Assessing brain biomarker content with positron emission tomography (PET) is not readily accessible to ordinary patients, and the scoring system of RCFT is unstable due to the interrater gap in scores. To overcome this problem, we propose AI, deep-learning-based solutions for RCFT scoring, and MRI-based PET prognosis. Method We obtained 20,040 scanned RCFT images from Gwangju Alzheimer's and Related Dementia cohort in Korea. The images copy, immediate recall, and delayed recall) rated by experienced psychologists were fed into an input for the DL model. DenseNet (Huang et al, 2017) architecture was used as the backbone. Finally, we conducted an external validation with 150 images scored by five experienced psychologists. The PET prognosis platform, NeuroAI, computes PET positivity rate based on T1, T2 Flair image, Apoe4 type, and demographics of patients. Results and discussion Our model obtained mean absolute error (MAE) = 1.24 [points] and R-squared (R²) = 0.977 for 5-fold cross-validation. For the 150 independent test sets, the MAE and R² between our model and average scores by five human experts were 0.64 [points] and 0.994, respectively. Our results suggested no fundamental difference between the rating scores of human experts and those of our AI psychologists. Background and objectives: Most deep-learning-related methodologies for electrocardiogram (ECG) classification are focused on finding an optimal deep-learning architecture to improve classification performance. However, in this study, we proposed a methodology for fusion of various single-lead ECG data as training data in the single-lead ECG classification problem. Methods: We used a squeeze-and-excitation residual network (SE-ResNet) with 152 layers as the baseline model. We compared the performance of a 152-layer SE-ResNet trained on ECG signals from various leads of a standard 12-lead ECG system to that of a 152-layer SE-ResNet trained on only single-lead ECG data with the same lead information as the test set. The experiments were performed using five different types of rhythm-type single-lead ECG data obtained from Konkuk University Hospital in South Korea. Results: Experiment results based on the combination from the relationship experiments of the leads showed that lead –aVR or II revealed the best classification performance. In case of -aVR, this model achieved a high F1 score for normal (98.7%), AF (98.2%), APC (95.1%), and VPC (97.4%), indicating its potential for practical use in the medical field. Conclusion: We concluded that the 152-layer SE-ResNet trained by fusion of single-lead ECGs had better classification performance than the 152-layer SE-ResNet trained on only single-lead ECG data, regardless of the single-lead ECG signal type. The adverse health effects associated with the inhalation and ingestion of naturally occurring radon gas produced during the uranium decay chain mean that there is a need to identify high-risk areas. This study detected radon-prone areas using a geographic information system (GIS)-based probabilistic and machine learning methods, including the frequency ratio (FR) model and a convolutional neural network (CNN). Ten influencing factors, namely elevation, slope, the topographic wetness index (TWI), valley depth, fault density, lithology, and the average soil copper (Cu), calcium oxide (Cao), ferric oxide (Fe 2 O 3), and lead (Pb) concentrations, were analyzed. In total, 27 rock samples with high activity concentration index values were divided randomly into training and validation datasets (70:30 ratio) to train the models. Areas were categorized as very high, high, moderate, low, and very low radon areas. According to the models, approximately 40% of the study area was classified as very high or high risk. Finally, the radon potential maps were validated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis. This showed that the CNN algorithm was superior to the FR method; for the former, AUC values of 0.844 and 0.840 were obtained using the training and validation datasets, respectively. However, both algorithms had high predictive power. Slope, lithology, and TWI were the best predictors of radon-affected areas. These results provide new information regarding the spatial distribution of radon, and could inform the development of new residential areas. Red tides caused by Margalefidinium polykrikoides occur continuously along the southern coast of Korea, where there are many aquaculture cages, and therefore, prompt monitoring of bloom water is required to prevent considerable damage. Satellite-based ocean-color sensors are widely used for detecting red tide blooms, but their low spatial resolution restricts coastal observations. Contrarily, terrestrial sensors with a high spatial resolution are good candidate sensors, despite the lack of spectral resolution and bands for red tide detection. In this study, we developed a U-Net deep learning model for detecting M. polykrikoides blooms along the southern coast of Korea from PlanetScope imagery with a high spatial resolution of 3 m. The U-Net model was trained with four different datasets that were constructed with randomly or non-randomly chosen patches consisting of different ratios of red tide and non-red tide pixels. The qualitative and quantitative assessments of the conventional red tide index (RTI) and four U-Net models suggest that the U-Net model, which was trained with a dataset of non-randomly chosen patches including non-red tide patches, outperformed RTI in terms of sensitivity, precision, and F-measure level, accounting for an increase of 19.84%, 44.84%, and 28.52%, respectively. The M. polykrikoides map derived from U-Net provides the most reasonable red tide patterns in all water areas. Prompt updates of land cover maps are important, as spatial information of land cover is widely used in many areas. However, current manual digitizing methods are time consuming and labor intensive, hindering rapid updates of land cover maps. The objective of this study was to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) based land cover classification model that allows for rapid land cover classification from high-resolution remote sensing (HRRS) images. The model comprises of three modules: pre-processing, land cover classification, and post-processing modules. The pre-processing module separates the HRRS image into multiple aspects by overlapping 75% using the sliding window algorithm. The land cover classification module was developed using the convolutional neural network (CNN) concept, based the FusionNet network and used to assign a land cover type to the separated HRRS images. Post-processing module determines ultimate land cover types by summing up the separated land cover result from the land cover classification module. Model training and validation were conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed model. The land cover maps and orthographic images of 547.29 km2 in area from the Jeonnam province in Korea were used to train the model. For model validation, two spatial and temporal different sites, one from Subuk-myeon of Jeonnam province in 2018 and the other from Daseo-myeon of Chungbuk province in 2016, were randomly chosen. The model performed reasonably well, demonstrating overall accuracies of 0.81 and 0.71, and kappa coefficients of 0.75 and 0.64, for the respective validation sites. The model performance was better when only considering the agricultural area by showing overall accuracy of 0.83 and kappa coefficients of 0.73. It was concluded that the developed model may assist rapid land cover update especially for agricultural areas and incorporation field boundary lineation is suggested as future study to further improve the model accuracy. Malware detection of non-executables has recently been drawing much attention because ordinary users are vulnerable to such malware. Hangul Word Processor (HWP) is software for editing non-executable text files and is widely used in South Korea. New malware for HWP files continues to appear because of the circumstances between South Korea and North Korea. There have been various studies to solve this problem, but most of them are limited because they require a large amount of effort to define features based on expert knowledge. In this study, we designed a convolutional neural network to detect malware within HWP files. Our proposed model takes a raw byte stream as input and predicts whether it contains malicious actions or not. To incorporate highly variable lengths of HWP byte streams, we propose a new padding method and a spatial pyramid average pooling layer. Four data-driven methods—random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), feed-forward neural network (FNN), and convolutional neural network (CNN)—are applied to discriminate surface and underwater vessels in the ocean using low-frequency acoustic pressure data. Acoustic data are modeled considering a vertical line array by a Monte Carlo simulation using the underwater acoustic propagation model, KRAKEN, in the ocean environment of East Sea in Korea. The raw data are preprocessed and reorganized into the phone-space cross-spectral density matrix (pCSDM) and mode-space cross-spectral density matrix (mCSDM). Two additional matrices are generated using the absolute values of matrix elements in each CSDM. Each of these four matrices is used as input data for supervised machine learning. Binary classification is performed by using RF, SVM, FNN, and CNN, and the obtained results are compared. All machine-learning algorithms show an accuracy of >95% for three types of input data—the pCSDM, mCSDM, and mCSDM with the absolute matrix elements. The CNN is the best in terms of low percent error. In particular, the result using the complex pCSDM is encouraging because these data-driven methods inherently do not require environmental information. In this study, we propose a method for the automated detection of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) from a single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) using a convolutional neural network (CNN). A CNN model was designed with six optimized convolution layers including activation, pooling, and dropout layers. One-dimensional (1D) convolution, rectified linear units (ReLU), and max pooling were applied to the convolution, activation, and pooling layers, respectively. For training and evaluation of the CNN model, a single-lead ECG dataset was collected from 82 subjects with OSA and was divided into training (including data from 63 patients with 34,281 events) and testing (including data from 19 patients with 8571 events) datasets. Using this CNN model, a precision of 0.99%, a recall of 0.99%, and an F1-score of 0.99% were attained with the training dataset; these values were all 0.96% when the CNN was applied to the testing dataset. These results show that the proposed CNN model can be used to detect OSA accurately on the basis of a single-lead ECG.
