In this paper, we present price and transaction information of fed cattle marketings to explore if differences exist in the quality grade of cattle marketed under different transaction types. In particular, we explore regional differences in marketings for cash, formula, forward, grid, and negotiated grid transactions from 2012 to 2022. Analysis shows that despite an industry trend toward higher-quality grade animals, most lowquality grade cattle are marketed in Texas, Oklahoma, or New Mexico using nonnegotiated pricing methods. Over the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in the use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to recover unconventional oil and gas in the Permian Basin of southeastern New Mexico (NM) and western Texas. Fracking generates enormous quantities of wastes that contain technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM), which poses risks to human health and the environment because of the relatively high doses of radioactivity. However, very little is known about the chemical composition and radioactivity levels of Permian Basin fracking wastes. Here, we report chemical as well as radiochemical compositions of hydraulic fracking wastes from the Permian Basin. Radium, the major TENORM of interest in unconventional drilling wastes, varied from 19.1 ± 1.2 to 35.9 ± 3.2 Bq/L for 226Ra, 10.3 ± 0.5 to 21.5 ± 1.2 Bq/L for 228Ra, and 2.0 ± 0.05 to 3.7 ± 0.07 Bq/L for 224Ra. In addition to elevated concentrations of radium, these wastewaters also contain elevated concentrations of dissolved salts and divalent cations such as Na+ (31,856–43,000 mg/L), Ca2+ (668–4123 mg/L), Mg2+ (202–2430 mg/L), K+ (148–780 mg/L), Sr2+ (101–260 mg/L), Cl− (5160–66,700 mg/L), SO42− (291–1980 mg/L), Br− (315–596 mg/L), SiO2 (20–32 mg/L), and high total dissolved solid (TDS) of 5000–173,000 mg/L compared to background waters. These elevated levels are of radiological significance and represent a major source of Ra in the environment. The recent discovery of large deposits of recoverable oil and gas in the Permian Basin will lead to more fracking, TENORM generation, and radium releases to the environment. We describe the instrumentation, calibration, and uncertainty of the network of ground-based, in situ, cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS) greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements deployed in the Permian basin. The primary goal of the network is to be used in conjunction with atmospheric transport modeling to determine methane emissions of the Delaware sub-basin of the Permian Basin oil and natural gas extraction area in Texas and New Mexico. Four of the measurements are based on tall communications towers, while one is on a building on a mountain ridge, with the recent addition of a small tower at that site. Although methane (CH4) is the primary specie of interest, carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and the isotopic ratio of methane (δ13CH4) are also reported for a subset of the sites. Measurements were reported following WMO X2004A scale for CH4, and the WMO X2019 scale for CO2. CRDS instruments were calibrated for CH4 and CO2 in laboratory prior deployment. For H2S, data was offset-corrected using the minimum 40-min running mean value of the day, and for δ13CH4, calibrations were based on laboratory data. We describe the characteristics of the data set with a set of illustrative analyses. Methane and carbon dioxide showed strong seasonality, with a well-defined diurnal cycle during the summer, which was opposed to the winter, when a diurnal cycle was absent. CH4 enhancements to the background, during the winter, are up to twice the summer values, which is attributed to the changes in boundary layer depth and wind speed. The largest CH4 enhancements occurred when winds blow from the center of the Delaware sub-basin, where most of the methane emissions come from. The magnitude of enhancements of CO2 did not present seasonality. H2S enhancements indicated a potential source northeast of the tower where the inlet is installed. Isotopic ratios of methane indicated that oil and natural gas extraction is the source of local methane in the region. The focus of this study is the 1938 Rio Grande Compact water supply. The compact is an interstate agreement signed in 1938 between the states of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas to evenly apportion the waters of the Rio Grande Basin. A shortage in deliveries is at the center of a lawsuit that began in 2011, went to the Supreme Court in 2013, and has not been resolved. This research statistically characterized the differences between water available and water delivered by Colorado and New Mexico, signatories of the Rio Grande Compact with Texas, to understand changes over time and uncover potential autocorrelations. Unexpected changes in water deliveries can have serious financial impacts on communities, thus the importance of shedding light into the behavior of the differences between water available and delivered. One of the findings of the research was that the annual credit/debit time series for Colorado was significantly correlated with the current and immediately previous scheduled delivery as well as with itself in the two previous years, and the behavior is explained by a transfer function model (TFM). For New Mexico, the annual credit/debit series did not display a clear pattern; therefore, it was not possible to characterize its relationship with scheduled delivery with the method examined. This technical note contributes to the extensive body of literature of the Rio Grande Compact in a way no other study has done as well as contributing to the wealth of literature related to the use of the transfer function model in hydrology. The main contribution of the study is the methodology developed and used, which could be useful to other river systems and transboundary water sharing agreements. This paper discusses various water management issues facing federal, state, and local agencies charged with managing the water resources of the Rio Grande River Basin and its major tributaries. The Rio Grande—3,058 km (=1,900 mi) long—is the fourth longest river in the United States. The river's basin is 870,236 km2(=336,000 mi2) and for roughly two-thirds of its length it forms the United States–Mexican border. It is a major recreational resource providing world class trout fishing near its headwaters in Colorado's San Juan Mountains and shoreline, angling, and boating opportunities near the Colorado–New Mexico border. The Rio Grande is the principal tourist attraction of Big Bend National Park and flows through downtown Albuquerque and El Paso. Many reaches are wide and broad, but almost all are relatively shallow and not navigable by commercial ships. Nevertheless, it is one of the most important renewable water resources of the southwestern United States and North America. The issue of the “manageability” of the river in the face of social forces and disparate administrative jurisdictions that adversely impact Rio Grande flows is a thread linking various sections of the paper together. The length of the river; the fact that major reaches lie in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas; and its unique role as an international boundary pose complex management problems. This paper seeks to develop an understanding of Mexican American incarceration including an examination of historical experiences in three selected states: California, New Mexico, and Texas. A caste model of inequality is considered to determine if it is useful in understanding the risk of imprisonment for Mexican Americans. Blalock's (1967) theory regarding ethnic concentration and increased discrimination is also used to allow for systematic analyses of the data. Finally, analyses of the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics study number 3029 (2001) are presented for partial evaluation of the impact of caste, of Blalock's (1967) theory, and to inform suggestions for improved data collection and future research. There was no consistent support for the expectations of overrepresentations of Mexican Americans in California or Texas prisons. Neither was there consistent support for the expectation that Mexican Americans sentenced in counties with high concentrations of Mexican Americans would receive longer sentences than would Anglos. This paper presents the results of a nationwide survey of educators for grades 6-12 who specialize in family and consumer sciences education (N=380). The paper examines teacher reports about their self-efficacy in online learning during the switch to off-campus instruction. Data revealed that district communication to teachers indicating that they were doing a good job and teachers having had prior online interactions with students were significantly related to the teachers' positive perceptions of self-efficacy.

The emerging research college or university is one of the most formidable resources a region has to reinvent and grow its economy. This paper is the first of two that outlines a process of building research universities that enhance regional technology development and facilitate flexible networks of collaboration and resource sharing. Although the strategies described were undertaken at larger public research universities, the paper's analysis of the factors influencing innovation, alongside key research management interventions, provides a framework for adapting this process to fit the needs of a full range of educational institutions. Major benefits were weighed against major costs associated with recent saltcedar control efforts along the Middle Pecos River, New Mexico. The area of study was restricted to both sides of the channel and excluded tributaries along the 370 km between Sumner and Brantley dams. Direct costs (helicopter spraying, dead tree removal, and revegetation) within the study area were estimated to be $2.2 million but possibly rising to $6.4 million with the adoption of an aggressive revegetation program. Indirect costs associated with increased potential for erosion and reservoir sedimentation would raise the costs due to increased evaporation from more extensive shallows in the Pecos River as it enters Brantley Reservoir. Actions such as dredging are unlikely given the conservative amount of sediment calculated (about 1% of the reservoir pool). The potential for water salvage was identified as the only tangible benefit likely to be realized under the current control strategy. Estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) using Landsat TM data allowed estimation of potential water salvage as the difference in ET before and after treatment, an amount totaling 7.41 million m3 (6010 acre-ft) per year. Previous saltcedar control efforts of roughly the same magnitude found that salvaged ET recharged groundwater and no additional flows were realized within the river. Thus, the value of this recharge is probably less than the lowest value quoted for actual in-channel flow, and estimated to be < $63,000 per year. Though couched in terms of costs and benefits, this paper is focused on what can be considered the key trade-off under a complete eradication strategy: water salvage vs. erosion and sedimentation. It differs from previous efforts by focusing on evaluating the impacts of actual control efforts within a specific system. Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) is a relatively unexplored seed legume crop with a high interest for production of galactomannan (guar gum), which is highly valued for industrial purposes. Until now no crop simulation models exist for guar. This paper describes the adaptation of the CROPGRO module of the Cropping System Model (CSM) to simulate guar growth and yield based on literature knowledge as well as optimization against growth analysis and yield data collected in multiple field experiments conducted in Texas and New Mexico. CSM-CROPGRO is a mechanistic model that simulates daily crop growth and development dependent on daily weather, soil properties, crop management, and genetic parameters. Model adaptation started with CROPGRO-Soybean as the template and involved setting tissue compositions, and especially the cardinal temperature dependencies of processes including the rate of leaf appearance, rate of progress to reproductive events, photosynthesis, pod addition, and seed growth rate, all parameterized in the species file. Adapted cultivar parameters include life cycle phase durations, duration to end of leaf area expansion, pod adding duration, leaf photosynthesis, seed size, seed protein, seed lipid, and individual seed filling duration. Compared to soybean, guar appears more sensitive to cold temperature because the cardinal base temperatures for photosynthesis, rate of leaf appearance, leaf area expansion, and seed growth had to be increased by 2–4 ˚C. The model adaptations highlight the drought tolerance of guar, with slower leaf and root senescence and greater tolerance of N-fixation under drought. The model simulated well the time-series growth of two cultivars under irrigated and rainfed conditions at Chillicothe, TX and gave acceptable simulations of end-of-season biomass, pod, and seed yield of guar in response to different weather, irrigation, soils, and seasons across three sites. This paper reviews the need for grant writing skills within various types of organizations and the resulting proposal for including grant writing within business administration curriculum at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. An introduction precedes the results of a survey regarding current grant writing courses within AACSB schools of business and is followed with a specific grant writing curriculum proposal. To grant is to give, and thousands of government agencies, corporations, foundations and trusts disburse billions of dollars each year. Recipients of these grants include many employers of business administration program graduates including non-profit entities, educational institutions, and business organizations. Regardless of the types of recipients, grants are largely awarded based on the assessment of grant proposals submitted. As the competition for grant opportunities increases, so does the need for grant writing skills enabling applicants to submit proposals that stand out among the submissions. Therefore, the inclusion of grant writing skills within undergraduate and/or graduate business programs is proposed. This paper includes an introduction regarding the availability and types of grant. Secondly, a survey of all southwestern-region AACSB accredited schools of business identifies the presence of grant writing and/or related courses within current undergraduate and graduate business administration curricula. Thirdly, a proposed sample grant writing course outline is presented including a course description, and units of instruction.

We model basin and Moho structure in the Permian Basin region of west Texas and southeastern New Mexico using a method for waveform matching via global optimization of P‐to‐S receiver functions, vertical autocorrelograms, and horizontal autocorrelograms. The algorithm is driven by Particle Swarm Optimization, whose search history can be used to assess the strength of data constraints on model parameters. A common drawback in receiver function modeling is the need to assume a value for Vp before Vs and layer thickness can be estimated. But constraints on Vp can be provided by vertical autocorrelograms of teleseismic arrivals, which detect reverberating P waves, because the phase delay times depend only on Vp and interface depth. P‐to‐S receiver functions and vertical and radial autocorrelograms are computed for M > 5.5 events at 30°–100° epicentral distance, then edited and binned by ray parameter. Synthetic seismograms are computed for layered models using a 1D reflectivity method. The free parameters in the algorithm include basin depth, basin Vp, basin Vp/Vs, and thickness and Vp/Vs of the crystalline crust. Where vertical autocorrelograms prove insufficient for determining basin Vp, Vp is assumed from nearby stations that were modeled successfully. We find an average basin Vp of 4.57 km/s and basin depths to ∼8 km. Moho depths are generally 40–48 km. A basin depth of at least 3.5 km is typically needed to produce sufficient phase separation to allow an average Vp to be determined with confidence. Modeling autocorrelograms jointly with receiver functions therefore improves constraints on deep basin structure. Plain Language Summary: The Permian Basin is a sedimentary basin in west Texas and southeastern New Mexico that harbors a large reservoir of oil and gas. In this study, distant earthquakes recorded by seismometers in the Permian Basin region are used as sources for imaging the structure of both the Permian Basin and the Earth's crust beneath the Basin. Processing techniques, including receiver function and autocorrelogram computation, are used to strip the individual earthquake signature from the recorded earthquakes, leaving only the signal due to the geologic structure beneath the seismic stations. Structure beneath each of the stations is then modeled by producing receiver functions and autocorrelograms that would be expected from different geologic structure to best match the real data. We find an average basin P wave velocity of 4.57 km/s and basin depths to ∼8 km. Crustal depths are generally 40–48 km. A basin depth of at least 3.5 km is typically needed for basin P wave velocities to be reasonably modeled. Understanding the intermittent hydraulic connectivity between ephemeral streams and alluvial aquifers is a key challenge for managing water resources in arid environments. The lower Rio Grande flows for short, discontinuous periods during the irrigation season through the Mesilla Basin in southeastern New Mexico and southwestern Texas. Hydraulic connections between the Rio Grande and the Rio Grande alluvial aquifer in the Mesilla Basin vary spatially and temporally and are not well understood. Self-potential (SP) monitoring and time-lapse electric resistivity tomography (ERT) were therefore performed along linear cross-sections spanning the riverbed and flood plain for more than 4 months to monitor the transient hydraulic connection between the river and the alluvial aquifer by measuring time-lapse changes in the electric potential field in the riverbed and flood plain. The monitoring period began on 21 May 2022, when the riverbed was completely dry, continued through the irrigation season while streamflow was provided by reservoir releases from upstream dams, and ended on 4 October 2022, when the riverbed was again dry. SP monitoring data show (1) a background condition in the dry riverbed consisting of (a) a positive electric potential anomaly with a maximum amplitude of about +100 mV attributed predominantly to a subsurface vertical salt concentration gradient and (b) diurnal electric potential fluctuations with amplitudes of 40,000–90,000 mV attributed to near-surface heat conduction driven by weather variability, in addition to (2) a streaming potential anomaly during the irrigation season with a maximum amplitude of about −3500 mV whose transient behavior clearly exhibited a change from the background anomaly to depict exclusively losing streamflow conditions that persisted through the irrigation season. Time-lapse ERT monitoring results depict rapid infiltration of streamflow into the subsurface and imply the river and Rio Grande alluvial aquifer established a full hydraulic connection within a few hours after streamflow arrival at the monitoring site. SP monitoring data show an apparent transition from hydraulic connection to disconnection at the end of the irrigation season and indicate that the transitional phase between connection and disconnection may last substantially longer than the transition from disconnection to connection. The combination of SP and ERT monitoring demonstrated herein shows the potential for broader applications of time-lapse monitoring of hydraulic intermittency and near-surface heat fluxes in different rivers. Purpose/Objectives: This study investigated the use of electronic and paper-based point-of-service (POS) systems in school nutrition programs (SNPs), including associated challenges and the desired skills and existing training practices for personnel handling such systems. Methods: A questionnaire was developed based on interviews with 25 SNP management staff, pilot-tested, and revised. The link to the online questionnaire was emailed to 1,500 SNP directors in 14 states. An additional 500 paper-based questionnaires were mailed to SNP directors in small districts or private/charter schools. Descriptive statistics were summarized using SPSS software. Results: There were 319 respondents, and 272 used an electronic system only; 22 of them used a paperbased system only; 21 used a combination of electronic and paper-based POS systems; and 4 contained missing data. Technical support from vendors (n = 221) was the most important factor for electronic POS system selection. The ability to customize reports (n = 35, 10.0%) and interface with district student data management systems (n = 21, 6.6%) were indicated as the main challenges. Small school or district size (n = 29, 9.1%) was the main reason for using a paper-based POS system. Concerns for paper-based system users pertained to accuracy of reimbursable meal counts (n = 28, 8.8%) and time lag in data processing (n = 27, 8.5%). Good customer service (n = 183, 57.4%) and computer literacy (n = 160, 50.2%) were desirable skills for POS handlers. Multiple individuals such as district directors and POS system vendors were involved in providing POS training which varied in frequency, format, and length between small and large districts. Applications to Child Nutrition Professionals: Electronic POS systems were more prevalent than paper-based systems in SNPs, but challenges existed for both types of systems. School nutrition management staff should consider price, compatibility, functionality, and technical support prior to purchasing a POS system. For SNPs where paper-based POS systems are used, best practices in data management may need to be developed and communicated with directors to improve accuracy of reports. POS training by qualified individuals should be provided regularly to ensure accuracy of transactions and reporting.

Four upward propagating streamers in two carrot sprites over northwest Texas were recorded at 100,000 frames per second at 07:46:35 UT, 2 June 2019, from the Langmuir Laboratory near Socorro, New Mexico. The streamers reached velocities of 50–80 × 106 m/s with accelerations up to 25 × 1010 m/s/s. The upward motion ended with the top of the streamers near 90 km altitude. At this time, the streamers reached maximum brightness. The streamer head then dissolved and the brightness decayed exponentially with time constants between 0.078 and 0.097 ms. We interpret the dissolution and decay to be the result of interaction with the bottom of the ionosphere. Assuming the decay to be dictated by electric field relaxation, the ambient D region electron density would be 107 to 108 m−3. The analysis suggests that sprite observations can provide multipoint measurements of the D region ionosphere impacted by powerful lightning capable of triggering sprites. The Rio Grande cooter (Pseudemys gorzugi) is an imperiled freshwater turtle native to the southwestern United States and northeastern Mexico. Previous studies investigating P. gorzugi diet have focused on the population occupying the Black River drainage in southeastern New Mexico, while Texas populations have remained unexamined. During the summer and fall of 2020, we studied the dietary habits of P. gorzugi and the syntopic red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) at San Felipe Creek, Texas, USA using fecal content and stable isotope analyses. We also compared the isotopic niches of these 2 co-occurring turtle species. Filamentous algae were, volumetrically, the most important food item for male, female, and juvenile P. gorzugi. Stable isotope mixing models indicated that lotic and lentic filamentous algae had the greatest proportional contribution to P. gorzugi and T. s. elegans diets, respectively. Stable isotope dietary mixing models also indicate T. s. elegans had a more carnivorous diet, composed mostly of red-rimmed melania (Melanoides tuberculata) and red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Carnivory in this species was further supported by enriched δ15N values and higher trophic position estimates. Pseudemys gorzugi and T. s. elegans had δ13C and δ15N signatures that significantly differed, and the 2 species showed little overlap in isotopic niche space, suggesting a low likelihood of intense resource competition. Our results demonstrate that the diet of P. gorzugi, and the isotopic niche overlap between P. gorzugi and T. s. elegans at San Felipe Creek differ from that in the Black River drainage of New Mexico. The information provided here contributes toward a more complete understanding of P. gorzugi ecology, is useful for identifying suitable habitat worthy of conservation, and can help guide the development of feeding regimes for captive assurance colonies. La tortuga de Río Grande (Pseudemys gorzugi) es una tortuga de agua dulce en peligro nativa del suroeste de los Estados Unidos y el noreste de México. Estudios previos que han investigado la dieta de P. gorzugi se han enfocado en la población que ocupa el drenaje del Black River en el sureste de Nuevo México, sin embargo, las poblaciones de Texas no han sido examinadas. In February 2015 a large group of scholars, researchers, and practitioners interested in P-20 finance issues gathered in St. Louis, Missouri, for the National Education Finance Academy's annual conference, on February 25-27, 2015 to discuss, among multiple topics, the state of P-20 finance in all 50 states. There were 35 states represented in the round table session and representatives of 30 of those states submitted their manuscripts to the "Journal of Education Finance" for publication. This is the third year that JEF has published the State of the States manuscripts as a service to those interested in trends around P-20 finance and the 28 states represents the highest number of states included in the report to date. However, it is the intention to have all 50 states represented by 2016 and individuals interested in representing currently unrepresented states should contact Drs. Weiler and Hartman. Presenters at the 2015 National Education Finance Academy's State of the States Round table session were directed to address the following topics: (1) Funding priorities/trends for P-12 and/or higher education (2) Changes to the funding formula for P-12 and/or higher education; (3) Pressing issues affecting P-12 and/or higher education funding; (4) Exclusive to P-12: Diverting funds from public school districts; and (5) Exclusive to Higher Education: Trends in state funding for public institutions. The following information summarizes some of the more prevalent trends observed in the submissions. Abstract: Reasoning that life in the U.S.–Mexico border region is sufficiently different from life in non-border regions this paper asks whether proximity to the border has a significant impact on presidential voting. County level data from four border states, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, over five presidential elections, 1992–2008, are examined using a both cross-sectional and panel data analysis. The authors conclude that there is a border effect that favors Democratic candidates and that fades as distance from the border increases. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Species delimitation is fundamental to deciphering the mechanisms that generate and maintain biodiversity. Alpha taxonomy historically relied on expert knowledge to describe new species using phenotypic and biogeographic evidence, which has the appearance of investigator subjectivity. In contrast, DNA‐based methods using the multispecies coalescent model (MSC) promise a more objective approach to describing biodiversity. However, recent criticisms suggest that under some conditions the MSC may over‐split lineages, identifying species that do not reflect biological reality. Here, we reconcile these approaches using empirical data for the Greenthroat Darter complex (Etheostoma lepidum), a small freshwater fish species with a disjunct distribution in Texas and New Mexico, USA. We demonstrate that MSC methods recognizes all nine sampled populations as distinct species, sometimes splitting specimens from a single locality into multiple species. However, environmental, phenotypic, and biogeographic evidence do not corroborate the nine species supported by the MSC. Instead, collective evidence indicates that E. lepidum is comprised of just three species that are consistent with the molecular phylogeny: Etheostoma lepidum (Greenthroat Darter) in rivers draining the eastern Edwards Plateau, Etheostoma cf. lepidum (Texas Darter) in the Concho and San Saba rivers, and Etheostoma cf. lepidum (Pecos Darter) in the Pecos River. The Pecos Darter is likely highly imperiled due to its localized distribution and reliance on vanishing spring‐fed stream habitats. The impending biodiversity crisis makes integrative and swift species delimitation more necessary than ever. Our study exemplifies how classic taxonomic expertise combined with molecular phylogenetics can produce a more robust description of threatened biodiversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Populations with higher genetic diversity and larger effective sizes have greater evolutionary capacity (i.e., adaptive potential) to respond to ecological stressors. We are interested in how the variation captured in protein‐coding genes fluctuates relative to overall genomic diversity and whether smaller populations suffer greater costs due to their genetic load of deleterious mutations compared with larger populations. We analyzed individual whole‐genome sequences (N = 74) from three different populations of Montezuma quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae), a small ground‐dwelling bird that is sustainably harvested in some portions of its range but is of conservation concern elsewhere. Our historical demographic results indicate that Montezuma quail populations in the United States exhibit low levels of genomic diversity due in large part to long‐term declines in effective population sizes over nearly a million years. The smaller and more isolated Texas population is significantly more inbred than the large Arizona and the intermediate‐sized New Mexico populations we surveyed. The Texas gene pool has a significantly smaller proportion of strongly deleterious variants segregating in the population compared with the larger Arizona gene pool. Our results demonstrate that even in small populations, highly deleterious mutations are effectively purged and/or lost due to drift. However, we find that in small populations the realized genetic load is elevated because of inbreeding coupled with a higher frequency of slightly deleterious mutations that are manifested in homozygotes. Overall, our study illustrates how population genomics can be used to proactively assess both neutral and functional aspects of contemporary genetic diversity in a conservation framework while simultaneously considering deeper demographic histories. The causative agent of Chagas disease, Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted by triatomine vectors. The insect is endemic in the Americas, including the United States, where epidemiological studies are limited, particularly in the Southwestern region. Here, we have determined the prevalence of T. cruzi in triatomines, and feral cats and dogs, and wild animals, the infecting parasite genotypes and the mammalian host bloodmeal sources of the triatomines at four different geographical sites in the U.S.-Mexico border, including El Paso County, Texas, and nearby cities in New Mexico. Using qualitative polymerase chain reaction to detect T. cruzi infections, we found 66.4% (n = 225) of triatomines, 45.3% (n = 95) of feral dogs, 39.2% (n = 24) of feral cats, and 71.4% (n = 7) of wild animals positive for T. cruzi. Over 95% of T. cruzi genotypes or discrete typing units (DTUs) identified were TcI and some TcIV. Furthermore, Triatoma rubida was the triatomine species most frequently (98.2%) collected in all samples analyzed. These findings suggest a high prevalence of T. cruzi infections among triatomines, and feral and wild animals in the studied sites. Therefore, our results underscore the urgent need for implementation of a systematic epidemiological surveillance program for T. cruzi infections in insect vectors, and feral and wild animals, and Chagas disease in the human population in the southwestern region of the United States. Author summary: Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and one of the major transmission routes is the contaminated feces of blood-feeding triatomine insect vectors, popularly known as kissing bugs. In recent years, this disease has become an important public health concern to the United States and other nonendemic regions of the world. Despite many studies about the prevalence of T. cruzi in triatomines, and domestic, feral and wild animals in central and southern Texas, there have been no studies in west Texas and New Mexico. In this study, we report the presence of triatomines in residences in El Paso County, TX, and surrounding communities in New Mexico (cities of Anthony and Las Cruces), as well as T. cruzi infections in feral and wild animals. Using two molecular techniques to analyze the bloodmeal source in triatomines, we detected 12 different mammalian bloodmeal sources, including human and canine. Finally, parasite genotyping showed that most (95%) of the samples belonged to the genotype TcI, which is prevalent in North America. Our findings indicate that the El Paso County and surrounding communities (>950,000 people) are high risk areas for T. cruzi transmission to humans, feral cats and dogs, and wild animals. Thus, there is an urgent necessity for a public health epidemiological surveillance program for T. cruzi infections in kissing bugs, feral and wild animals, and in the human population in the U.S.-Mexico border region.
