Wolves use howls to maintain large territories, intra-pack communication and social bonding. Besides their physical presence, howls are also instrumental in creating fear and impacting foraging behaviour among the lower cascade. Anthropocene-led behavioural alteration in vocalization has been observed in a wide range of species, but the effect on wolf howl is unknown. In this context, we have studied the howling behaviour of the Indian wolf through playback surveys (n = 264) across the anthropogenic gradient. We found a disparity in their howl response – based on the distance to villages. In the low disturbed East-Maharashtra (EM), wolves mostly avoided responding to howling surveys (HS) if done within 1200 m of villages [response rate (RR) = 0.03 ± 0.021], but they did respond once it was done far from villages (>1200 m) (RR = 0.226 ± 0.075). In high human-density West-Maharashtra (WM), wolves showed high RR within 1200 m from the villages (RR = 0.148 ± 0.031). But the RR within 500 m from villages was less as howling near villages might lead to easy detection. The collared wolf data showed significantly high RR (0.635 ± 0.067) in their home-range core, but low RR if the core area was close to a village. Therefore, howling too close to a village is disadvantageous, although their tolerance for responding to HS has increased in the human-dominated landscape. The extent of the village may increase further with development, which will leave fewer areas for the wolf to defend territory with a long-range howl. The wolves might behaviourally adapt to a human-modified landscape by reducing their howling intensity. Adaptation to a fragmented habitat may save the wolves from extinction, but the repercussions of the fundamental behavioural alteration might adversely impact wolf behaviour and the ecological cascade. Whereas ecologists are mainly concerned with the extinction of species, this study highlights the vulnerability of fundamental behaviour of a keystone species attributed to human-induced contemporary evolution. Background: Children inherently want to remain engrossed in the activities as easily as possible within their ecological environment and academic curricular ambit. Covid-19 adversely affected our physical, social, and mental conditions and children were no exception. Objectives: To understand the experiences of teachers who have been doing virtual teaching to children during COVID-19; To understand the impact of virtual teaching and COVID-19 on physical and mental health of children. Materials and Methods: The qualitative study was conducted in the Kashmir valley and school teachers teaching students from class Ist to class 8th were involved in the study. Participants were selected purposefully based on the inclusion criteria. One-to-one in-depth interviews were conducted with sixteen (16) school teachers, using a preformed interview guide. Data analysis was performed using the thematic analysis method. Results: Data analysis yielded four overarching themes and twelve subthemes viz:- 1) Attitudes towards online sessions among teachers (2) factors affecting the physical and mental health of children (3) Effectiveness of online classes for individual lines of children's mental development (4) External and internal factors impacting child development and pedagogy. Conclusion: The study result explicitly showed mental and physical health of children got considerably affected by online teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic. Online teaching especially to children is less yielding in terms of effective academic consequences. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has led to severe disruption in routine activities, significant mortality and morbidity. Adolescents are particularly prone to mental health issues. The present study aims to estimate prevalence of depression and anxiety and its determinants among school-going adolescents in Kashmir valley of India. Results: The Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents and Generalised Anxiety Disorder questionnaire were used to screen for depression and anxiety among school-going adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years during January and February 2021. Out of the 439 adolescents who had responded, 426 (97.03%) were included in final analysis. The adolescents had a mean age of 17.5 + 1.26 years and comprised of 57% males. The overall prevalence of depression was 16% and was associated with a past history of COVID-19 infection. Anxiety was present in 20% of adolescents. The prevalence was 14% for boys and 27.5% for girls. On logistic regression, anxiety was associated with female gender, past history of personal COVID-19 infection, history of COVID-19 diagnosis in family and hospital admission due to COVID-19 in family. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression are major public health problems among adolescents. Introduction: Real-time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) can be considered to be the gold standard for diagnosis of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). Though it is highly accurate but has some limitations in terms of its use, which means that Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) can support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Aim: To estimate sensitivity, specificity and degree of agreement of STANDARD Q COVID-19 Antigen Detection Kit in comparison to real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Government Medical College, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, in April 2021. Socio-demographic and clinical information was collected on a pretested schedule after which two consecutive nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from each subject. One sample was tested using the STANDARD Q COVID-19 antigen test and the other was tested using qRT-PCR. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated using standard formulas. Cohen's Kappa was calculated and Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison. Results: The study included 473 subjects with a mean age of 38.4±12.2 years. Around 1/4th (124 subjects) of subjects were symptomatic at testing with the most common symptoms being fever (57.2%), cough (50%), sore throat (43%), myalgia (25%) and diarrhoea (13%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio and negative likelihood ratio were estimated to be 54.4%, 99.2%, 71.49 and 0.46, respectively. The Cohen's Kappa between the two tests was 0.644. Cycle threshold value was significantly lower in subjects with symptoms and those with a positive rapid test among those positive on qRT-PCR. Background: The antenatal period is an important landmark where the services provided to mothers through antenatal care (ANC) checkups also act as a way for additional interventions influencing maternal and child health. This study aimed to know about the perception and practice among the patients of ANC checkups (ANCs) regarding COVID-19 and what are the implications of it on their routine check-ups. Methods: We conducted this study from 15 April, 2020 to 03 May, 2020, Phase 2 {Country wide lockdown in India}, which was imposed for over 19 days. The sample size was kept open and we used convenient type of sampling and included all those pregnant women who attended the clinic for ANC checkup amid the countrywide lock down. Each patient of ANC checkup was interviewed by the treating doctor using a predesigned structured questionnaire containing questions based on demographic information and the perception and practices regarding corona virus infection. Results: The majority, 66 (79.5%) were in the age group of 26–35 years, 63 (75.9%) were in the second and third trimester of their pregnancy, 72 (86.7%) were from urban areas, 26 (31.3%) and 17 (20.5%) were having education level of bachelor's and higher, respectively. The majority 39 (47%) reported that they are worried that someone they know may have the coronavirus infection and they are unaware about it, 57 (68.7%) feel the nature of the disease as fatal, all ANCs reported that their families are taking initiatives to prevent corona virus infection and they should take extra precautions for corona virus infection, 6 (7.2%) reported that any member of their family has been quarantined during the period, 81 (97.6%) feel that primary precautions like hand washing, social distancing, wearing a face mask, and isolation and quarantine will help in the reduction of infection, 69 (83.1%) choose to report to hospital if any of their close relatives are down with symptoms of corona virus. India's urbanization has resulted in a significant change in many regions for both agricultural land and agricultural land use. However, there is limited understanding about the relationship between the two primary changes occurring to India's agricultural land – the urban expansion on agricultural land and agricultural land use intensity. Our primary goal here is to examine agricultural land change patterns and processes, and their main driving forces in Aligarh region (Uttar Pradesh) during the time periods from 2011 to 2018. We have conducted a remote sensing and GIS based analysis of change pattern using multi-temporal Landsat imageries for the years 2011 and 2018 by investigating the magnitude of changes in agricultural land use intensity across the district in a geographical perspective. Our study captured gradual decrease in the agricultural land in Aligarh district. The results also show that urban expansion is associated with a decline in agricultural land use intensity. The region experienced agriculture transition, and the urban expansion trend persisted till 2018. In terms of the drivers, we believe that the population and economic factors are most influential in shaping urban centers, while lower incentive and climatic shifts are the key drivers of decrease in agricultural land. Our study highlights the drastic effects of socio-economic and climatic changes on links between urbanization, and agricultural land which implies that urban land expansion is highly likely in future and consequently, will create pressure on the country's food security. In India researchers have been studying mental health and its correlates for the last three decades rigorously. The objective of this review is to identify and sort out studies that has been conducted in India concerning mental health of Indian women and its correlates (sociological & economic status, job pressure & marital status). These studies are focused wholly on women of India (working & non-working). This piece of research gave us a direction and identified the gap and work to fill it through researches. Background: India is responding to achieve the target of zero human death from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Objectives: To study the rising pattern, seasonal predisposition and trend analysis of animal bite cases attending the anti-rabies clinic of a tertiary care hospital. Methodology: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the anti-rabies clinic of Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Data were collected from the animal bite register maintained at the said clinic. Data were entered into Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analysed with the application of mean, proportion and trend analysis. Results: Total number of animal bite cases were 49508 in last 14 years (2004-2017). The rising case pattern has been observed since the year 2009.The maximum number of cases being 7324 in the year 2016 followed by 6548 in the year 2017 respectively. The seasonal predisposition of animal bite cases was seen in the month of March and June. On-trend analysis, forecasting for 2018, 2019 and 2020 showed 7570, 8108 and 8645 cases respectively. Conclusion: We conclude that the animal bite cases are on an increase in the future years and applicable management measures with intersectoral coordination ought to be started vigorously in endemic areas. An agroclimatic study was conducted to assess the climatic risks in fitting of rainfed crops based on weekly probabilistic values of Moisture Adequacy Index, (MAI) which is the ratio of actual evapotranspiration (AET) to potential evapotranspiration (PET). MAI was estimated at 50 and 75 per cent probability levels, compared to water demand of crops at different phases of growth and thereby to identify appropriate planting schedules for maize and rice based cropping systems in coarse, medium and fine textured soils in different districts under drought prone region (Zone IIIB) of Bihar. The AET was calculated by climatic water balance method using historical weather data. The results revealed that the crops grown in coarse textured soil had to endure greater water stress of different magnitudes at different phases of crop growth than those in medium and fine textured soils. During kharif season, maize could be successfully grown without water stress at any phases of growth across various districts and soils. Although adoption of crops during rabi season becomes risky, toria could be fitted in the cropping sequence for this drought prone region in fine textured soil. Results emanated from the study were of practical implication for field application and for breeding appropriate varieties matching with water availability period. The plankton and semi-plankton samples collected from four floodplain lakes (beels) of Barpeta district of lower Brahmaputra river basin, Assam state, northeastern India (NEI) revealed eighteen rotifer species of biodiversity and biogeographic interest belonging to five families and six genera. One species is new to the Indian Rotifera and one species is new to Assam. Our collections are characterized by two Australasian elements, five Oriental endemics, seven paleotropical species, and one cosmo (sub) tropical species. Nine species, restricted to date to NEI, are examples of regional distribution importance in India while six species depicted disjunct distribution in the country. Interestingly, seven species are categorized as Eastern hemisphere elements. All the taxa are illustrated to warrant validation as an increasing magnitude of 'unverifiable records' is a serious impediment for the progress of rotifer biodiversity in India. Background: The emergence of antimalarial drug resistance malaria parasite is widespread in North eastern region of India. During January 2012-December 2013, we conducted active surveillance for detection of antifolate resistance-associated genetic polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite from different malaria endemic areas of Assam. Materials and Methods: A total of 281 field samples were collected from suspected malaria patients of which 106 malaria P. falciparum positive cases were detected in microscopic slide examination. A nested PCR was done for amplification of a 648 bp portion of the dhfr gene and 710 bp portion of the dhps gene. Results: Mutation analysis revealed existence of three different haplotypes of the P. falciparum dhfr gene of which ANRNI was highly prevalent (90%). Triple mutant haplotypes AIRNI (N51I + C59R + S108N) of the dhfr gene associated with pyrimethamine resistance were prevalent in Chirang district of Assam. Whereas, dhps mutation study revealed that triple mutant haplotype AGEAA (S436A + A437G + K540E) associated with Sulphadoxine resistance was found among 26% of P. falciparum field isolates. However, P. falciparum dhfr-dhps two locus mutation analysis showed that there were a total of nine dhfr-dhps genotypes. Conclusion: It was noticed that 93.62% (88/94) isolates had mutations in the sequences of both enzymes, which is an indication of prevalence of high grade of Sulphadoxine -- pyrimethamine resistance in P. falciparum malaria parasites in Assam. BACKGROUND: An assessment of cancer incidence in population is required for prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and resource allocation. This will also guide in the formation of facilities for diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up for these patients. The demographic trend of cancer will help to identify common types and etiological factors. Efforts at clinical, research and administrative levels are needed to overcome this problem. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Present retro prospective study was conducted in regional cancer center of a tertiary care hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After permission from ethics committee, a retro prospective study of 1 year duration was undertaken to study the profile of cancer patients and to compare it with other cancer registries in India. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Pearson's Chi-square test and simple linear regression were used. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version-16 (University of Bristol information services (www.bristol.ac.uk/is/ learning/resources) was used. RESULTS: The overall incidence of cancer in Kashmir is on the increase and common sites of cancer are esophagus and gastroesophageal (GE) junction, lung, stomach, colorectal, lymphomas, skin, laryngopharynx, acute leukemias, prostate and brain in males.In females common sites are breast, esophagus and GE junction, ovary, colorectal, stomach, lung, gallbladder, lymphomas, acute leukemias and brain. CONCLUSION: Cancers of esophagus, stomach and lungs have a high incidence both in men and women in Kashmir. Future studies on sources and types of environmental pollution and exposures in relation to these cancers may improve our understanding of risk factors held responsible for causation of these malignancies in this region. Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is one of the dreaded mosquito borne viral diseases mostly prevalent in South Asian countries including India. It is important to study the detail of the JE affected areas in terms of environmental and social factors that determines the outbreak of the disease. A comprehensive study was conducted during the period 2003-2007 in Dibrugarh, a JE endemic district of Assam. Effect of landscape and socio-economic factors on mosquito vector density was investigated with remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) inputs and developed the methodology .for predicting spatial distribution of occurrence JE in the district. The methodology was validated during subsequent 5 years (2008-2012) and accuracy of forecasts has been assessed. Wetlands have been found to be the most preferred habitat type for majority of the JE transmitting mosquitoes followed by paddy growing areas and ponds. Based on the spatial distribution of habitat types, villages in the district divided into three categories of vector abundance and hence the risk of JE. Among socio-economic determinants, pig rearing habitat of the villagers have been found to be most significant. Based on the pig rearing distribution pattern in the village, all the villages have been categorized into three categories of JE virus reservoir abundance viz. high, medium and low. Along with these two categorization approaches, villages were also categorized into three relative scale based on retrospective data on disease intensity. Final JE risk map was prepared with integration of vector abundance map with the map of host abundance and retrospective disease intensity in GIS domain. JE risk maps were prepared at the beginning of the disease season that is at the beginning of April for past five years (2008-2012). Actual cases occurred in the district was overlaid on the JE risk map to verify the accuracy of forecasts. The present study was undertaken with the objective to investigate the intraspecific variation of Channa punctatus on the basis of morphometric characters using the truss network system that was constructed from the fish body. Fish samples were collected from the Narora (n = 62) and Kanpur sites (n = 46) of the Ganga River, the Firozabad site in the Yamuna River (n = 66) and at the Lucknow site of the Gomti River (n = 60). Data were subjected to principal component analysis, discriminant function analysis and univariate analysis of variance. The first principal component ( PC I) analysis explained 47.75% of total variation while PC II and PC III explained 8.18 and 7.48%, respectively. The step-wise discriminant function analysis retained seven variables that significantly discriminated the populations. Using these variables 81.85% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples. Misclassification was higher for the samples from Ganga River (19.6% at the Kanpur site and 19.4% for the Narora site). Of the total 27 transformed morphometric measurements, 23 exhibited significant differences among the populations. Visceral Leishmaniasis or Kala Azar is endemic in certain regions of India. In endemic areas, the constellation of fever, progressive weight loss, weakness, pronounced splenomegaly, anemia, leukopenia, and hypergammaglobulinemia is highly suggestive of visceral leishmaniasis. Demonstration of the parasite in liver, splenic or bone marrow aspirates is confirmatory. We present a case in which Leishmania donovani (LD) bodies were demonstrated on splenic aspirate. An application of spatial statistics analyse has been demonstrated for identifying Japanese Encephalitis (JE) incidence hotspots to prioritise interventions in a JE endemic district of Assam. Spatial order and association of JE reporting villages in the study area have been analysed using spatial statistics analytical techniques. Data on historical morbidity pattern of JE collected at village level provided the required stratification base for delineating the JE incidence hot spots. Spatial statistics parameters such as mean centre, standard deviational ellipse and spatial autocorrelation have been calculated for JE reporting villages. Strong spatial autocorrelation (p<0.01) among the JE reporting villages have been observed in terms of morbidity pattern as indicated by Moran's 1 index. General G statistics has been calculated to categorize JE prone villages and tested for statistical significance. Based on this G statistics. The article discusses inconsistencies and inadequacies in the implementation of the 2001 Indian Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights (PPV & FR) Act. Some of inadequacies in PPV & FR Act involve the slow approach in the maintenance of database of existing varieties, notification of species eligible for registration, and duration of registration. Inconsistencies in the law are also discussed.

This paper deals with the diversity and seasonal variations of macro-benthic infauna and associated environmental factors influencing the benthic community in the inshore waters of southern Indian coast. Four seasonal collections (2006–2007) were made at three different depths (5, 15 and 25 m) in the inshore waters of Pazhayar, Parangipettai and Cuddalore and at 5 m near State Industrial Promotion Council of Tamilnadu (SIPCOT), covering 10 stations in Bay of Bengal. Altogether, 80 infaunal samples (Van-veen grab 0.1 m2) were collected which revealed the occurrence of 132 species representing five diverse groups. Polychaetes were the dominant group (45%), followed by bivalves (31%) and gastropods (16%). Diversity (H’log2) was maximum (4.601) at Parangipettai 25 m during the pre-monsoon season, and the minimum (0.954) was in SIPCOT during monsoon. Comparison of two major studies conducted by National family health survey (NFHS-2) in 1998–1999 and NFHS-3 in 2005–2006 shows that prevalence of obesity among Indian women has elevated from 10.6% to 12.6% (increased by 24.52%). The prevalence is more profound in the women of age between 40–49 years (23.7%), residing in cities (23.5%), having high qualification (23.8%), belonging to Sikh community (31.6%) and households in the highest wealth quintile (30.5%). Highest percentage of obese women is found in Punjab (29.9%). Although this number seems small in the international perspective, it is significant because of the sheer size of population in India. While the problem of under-nutrition still exists in many parts of India, the additional burden of obesity due to increasing sedentary lifestyle, junk food habits in some urban and economically sound areas is really alarming. At Tata Steel, Jamshedpur works the hot metal production capacity was enhanced from 3·57 mT in 1997–1998 to 5·51 mT in 2007–2008 with the same number of cast houses, thereby, increasing the thermal load on the runner system. Maximising trough availability and ensuring zero breakouts were the means to fulfill the objective of handling the increased furnace production. Significant changes in trough refractory design and introduction of new materials like prefabricated shapes helped to improve reliability of the troughs. The paper presents the design and mode of operation of main troughs of different blast furnaces (BFs) operated at Jamshedpur works, modification of trough design in the upgraded G-BF and its performance and details of improvements made in the trough back-up refractory lining, its wear monitoring and cooling systems. Sulfate aerosols have been found to be the major contributors to precipitation acidity. Thus, in view of the long-term ecological repercussions they have on aquatic ecosystems and their acidity-potential, the present analysis focuses on a case study application of the layer-averaged aerosol-scavenging model (Okita et al., 1996) for predicting values of the wet scavenging coefficient and sulfate concentrations in precipitation samples on the basis of the information available for some selected Indian cities. Through sensitivity analysis (Pandey et al., 1997) the scavenging coefficient has been found to be very strongly dependent on precipitation intensity. The mangrove ecosystem is being intensively studied with the hope of discovering new chemical entities with biomedical potentials. A number of biologically active compounds with varying degrees of action such as anticancer, antiulcer, antioxidant, antidiabetic and antimicrobial properties have been isolated from mangroves. Totally 81 mangrove species have been reported worldwide, of which 46 species are reported to occur in India. Among these, around 36 mangrove species are used in traditional medicine. Approximately 249 bioactive compounds have been isolated from 18 species, and the remaining species are yet to be screened. Biologically active compounds such as limonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, flavonoids, esters, quinones, phenols, acids, aliphatic alcohol, amides, lactones, aliphatic ketones, and benzodioxols have been derived from the leaves, stems, barks, fruits, and seeds of Indian mangrove plants. This review examines the current trends in the screening and biological activity of metabolites from the Indian mangroves. Nees (Acanthaceae), commonly known as Kalmegh is used both in Ayurvedic and Unani system of medicines for a number of ailments related to digestion, hepatoprotection, hypoglycemic, and as anti-bacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, vermicidal and antiacene. Ten accessions of A. paniculata from different sources were screened to assess the yield and its components besides andrographolides on three harvesting dates viz. 70, 100, 130 days after plantation corresponding to calendar months of September, October and November. The results revealed its successful growth in the subtropical region of Jammu, with last week of October ideal for obtaining maximum dry herbage (931.3kg/ha) and total andrographolide yield (61.83kg/ha), respectively. On the basis of leaf/stem ratio the relative estimates of total andrographolide is higher in October (46%) than September (15%) or November (39%). Ecosystems are balanced by nature and each component in the system has a role in the sustenance of other components. A change in one component would invariably have an effect on others. Stomatopods (mantis shrimps) are common and ecologically important predatory crustaceans in tropical marine waters. The ecological role of mantis shrimps and potential impacts of trawling in a marine ecosystem were estimated using Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) Version 5.0 software, by constructing a mass balanced Ecopath model of Parangipettai (Porto Novo) ecosystem. Based on fisheries information from the region, 17 ecological groups were defined including stomatopods. Both primary and secondary data on biomass, P/B, Q/B and diet composition were used as basic inputs. The mass balanced model gave a total system throughput of 14,756tkm−2 year−1. The gross efficiency of 0.000942 indicated higher contribution of lower food chain groups in the fishery though the mean trophic level was 3.08. The immature and developing stage of the ecosystem was indicated by the ratio of total primary production and total respiration (1.832) and the net system production (2643.30tkm−2 year−1). Key indices (flow to detritus, net efficiency and omnivory index), split mortality rates and mixed trophic impact of different ecological groups were obtained from the model. A flow diagram was constructed to illustrate the trophic interactions, which explained the biomass flows in the ecosystem with reference to stomatopods. Two temporal simulations were made, with 10 year durations in the mass balanced Ecopath model by using ecosim routine incorporated in EwE software. The effect of decrease in biomass of stomatopods in the ecosystem was well defined, in the first run with increase in stomatopod fishing mortality, and the group showed a high positive impact on benthopelagic fish biomass increase (129%). The simulation with increase in trawling efforts resulted in the biomass decline of different ecological groups as elasmobranchs to 1%, stomatopods to 2%, crabs and lobsters to 36%, cephalopods to 63%, mackerel to 78%, and shrimps to 89%. Present study warns stomatopod discards and further increase in trawling efforts in the region and it explained the need for ecosystem based fisheries management practices for the sustainability of marine fisheries. By combining global positioning system observations of surface displacements and the locations of aftershocks, we infer that the 8 October 2005 Kashmir earthquake occurred on multiple fault planes. Mean slip of ~5.1 m occurred on a rupture between Bagh and Balakot with strike 331° and dip 29°. Additional slip occurred at depth on a NNE-dipping fault plane extending WNW from Balakot, and on an intersecting nearly flat dislocation at ~5 km depth, forming an active wedge thrust. Both the simple fault plane and the blind wedge accommodate convergence between Peshawar and Leh, Ladakh, accumulating at 7 ± 2 mm/yr, suggesting a 680 ± 150 yr recurrence interval for Kashmir 2005-like events. Background There is sparse data available on foot sarcomas treated on contemporary protocols. Methods This retrospective analysis involved 27 cases of foot sarcomas managed with multi-modality treatment under Sarcoma Clinic, at tertiary care hospital between January 2014 to May 2019. Baseline demographics, radiographic tumour characteristics, histological diagnosis, type of treatment received and oncological outcomes were noted for all cases. Statistical analysis was done by STATA version 13.0. Survival curves were analyzed by Kaplan Meir test and univariate analysis was done by Log Rank test. Results Median age was 26 years (range: 20 – 46 years). Median duration of symptoms were 11 months (Range: 5 – 24 months). Radiologically mean largest diameter of tumour was 6.5 cm (CI: 1.1 – 12 cm). Seven tumours (26%) arose from bone and 20 form soft tissue (74%). In tumours arising from bone, metatarsal was most commonly site of involvement (3 out of 7). Most common histology was synovial sarcoma (44%) f/b Ewing's sarcoma (26%) f/b others (RMS, DFSP, MPNST, angiosarcoma). Ten patients (37%) had metastatic disease at presentation, lung being most common site (80%). Histological discordance with review diagnosis was seen in 50 % cases. Amputation was needed in 10 cases (37%) (palliative - 5, curative - 5) while limb salvage surgery was done in 10 (all curative). Adjuvant radiation was given in 7 out of 10 cases (70%). At last follow up 16 out of 27 patients (60%) were alive without disease, 4 (11%) with disease while 8 (29%) have died. With median follow-up of 43 months (Range 8 - 63 months) median PFS was 22 months. Median PFS in non-metastatic group was 48 months, while in metastatic group it was 8 months. On univariate analysis, median OS was significantly different between metastatic vs non-metastatic group (HR 10.93, p = 0.03). Conclusions Foot sarcomas happen in young adults irrespective of pathology with synovial sarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma being most common histologies. Amputation rates are quite high even considering small size, owing to anatomy of the region as noted in previous studies. The treatment required for non metastatic disease is multimodality including use of radiation. If treated in multidisciplinary clinic outcomes can certainly be improved. Background: The pandemic exacerbated burnout experienced by healthcare personnel, whose mental health had long been a public health concern before COVID-19. This study used the Copenhagen burnout inventory (CBI) tool to assess burnout and identify predictors among Indian healthcare workers managing COVID-19., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to December 2022, after the third pandemic wave. A web-based, fillable Google form was used to recruit COVID-19 management professionals from multiple Jaipur district hospitals. Healthcare professionals provided socio-demographic, work-related, and CBI scores. Multiple linear regression was used to control for model covariant independent variables., Results: We evaluated the responses of a total of 578 participants with a mean age of 36.59 ± 9.1 years. Based on the CBI cut-off score of 50, 68.1% reported burnout. A total of 67.5%, 56.4%, and 48.6% of healthcare workers reported work-related, personal, and patient-related burnout, respectively. High burnout scores were significantly associated with the nursing profession ( β  = 7.89, 95% CI; 3.66, 12.11, p  < 0.0001). The p -value indicates the probability of observing the data if the null hypothesis is true, and the confidence interval shows the range within which we can be 95% confident that the true effect lies. An independent relationship exists between male gender and higher personal-related burnout scores ( β  = 4.45, 95% CI 1.9-6.9)., Conclusion: This study identified key indicators that need further emphasis and the need for organizational and individual-level burnout monitoring in healthcare delivery sectors. Health workers continue to experience burnout due to a combination of personal, professional, and patient-related factors. Background: The biological characteristics of mosquito vectors vary, impacting their response to control measures. Thus, having up-to-date information on vector bionomics is essential to maintain the effectiveness of existing control strategies and tools, particularly as India aims for malaria elimination by 2030., Objective: This study aims to assess the proportions of vector species resting indoors and outdoors, determine their preference for host biting/feeding, identify transmission sites, and evaluate the susceptibility of vectors to insecticides used in public health programs., Methods: Mosquito collections were conducted in 13 districts across 8 Indian states from 2017 to 2020 using various methods to estimate their densities. Following morphological identification in the field, sibling species of Anopheles mosquitoes were identified molecularly using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-specific alleles. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections in the vectors were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and PCR assays. In addition, we assessed the insecticide susceptibility status of primary malaria vectors following the World Health Organization (WHO) protocol., Results: Anopheles culicifacies, a primary malaria vector, was collected (with a man-hour density ranging from 3.1 to 15.9) from all states of India except those in the northeastern region. Anopheles fluviatilis, another primary vector, was collected from the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Odisha. In Haryana and Karnataka, An. culicifacies sibling species A predominated, whereas species C and E were predominant in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. An. culicifacies displayed mainly endophilic behavior across all states, except in Madhya Pradesh, where the proportion of semigravid and gravid mosquitoes was nearly half of that of unfed mosquitoes. The human blood index of An. culicifacies ranged from 0.001 to 0.220 across all study sites. The sporozoite rate of An. culicifacies ranged from 0.06 to 4.24, except in Madhya Pradesh, where none of the vector mosquitoes were found to be infected with the Plasmodium parasite. In the study area, An. culicifacies exhibited resistance to DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane; with <39% mortality). Moreover, it showed resistance to malathion (with mortality rates ranging from 49% to 78%) in all districts except Angul in Odisha and Palwal in Haryana. In addition, resistance to deltamethrin was observed in districts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, and Karnataka., Conclusions: Our study offers vital insights into the prevalence, resting behavior, and sibling species composition of malaria vectors in India. It is evident from our findings that resistance development in An. culicifacies, the primary vector, to synthetic pyrethroids is on the rise in the country. Furthermore, the results of our study suggest a potential change in the resting behavior of An. culicifacies in Madhya Pradesh, although further studies are required to confirm this shift definitively. Endometriosis, affecting approximately 10% of reproductive-aged women globally, poses significant challenges, including chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and infertility. In low- and middle-income countries like India, accessibility to affordable infertility care remains a concern. This multicenter prospective cohort study, conducted across six tertiary care hospitals in India from 2017 to 2022, aims to explore the natural progression of conception and pregnancy outcomes in women with endometriosis. Of the 257 participants, 19.1% conceived during the study, revealing significant geographic and income-based variations (p < 0.001, p = 0.01). Dysmenorrhea (p < 0.001) and dyspareunia (p=0.027) were correlated with conception, while no such associations were found with chronic pelvic pain or menstrual factors. Lesion type, number, and severity showed no conclusive link with conception. Natural conception occurred in 70% of cases, with an average post-surgery conception time of 282.1 days. Live birth rate was 85.7%, while complications included placenta previa (16.4%), preeclampsia (4.1%), and preterm births (4.1%). This study, one of the first in India on endometriosis-related fertility progression, emphasizes the need for comprehensive understanding and management of conception and pregnancy outcomes. HIV infection has been a global public health threat and overall reported ~ 40 million deaths. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is attributed to the retroviruses (HIV-1/2), disseminated through various body fluids. The temporal progression of AIDS is in context to the rate of HIV-1 infection, which is twice as protracted in HIV-2 transmission. Q-PCR is the only available method that requires a well-developed lab infrastructure and trained personnel. Micro-PCR, a portable Q-PCR device, was developed by Bigtec Labs, Bangalore, India. It is simple, accurate, fast, and operationalised in remote places where diagnostic services are inaccessible in developing countries. This novel micro-PCR determines HIV-1 and HIV-2 viral load using a TruePrep™ extractor device for RNA isolation. Five ml blood samples were collected at the blood collection centre at AIIMS, New Delhi, India. Samples were screened for serology, and a comparison of HIV-1/2 RNA was done between qPCR and micro-PCR in the samples. The micro-PCR assay of HIV-RNA has compared well with those from real-time PCR (r = 0.99, i < 0.002). Micro-PCR has good inter and intra-assay reproducibility over a wide dynamic range (1.0 × 10 2 -1.0 × 10 8  IU/ml). The linear dynamic range was 10 2 -10 8  IU/ml. The clinical and analytical specificity of the assay was comparable, i.e., 100%. Intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation ranged from 1.17% to 3.15% and from 0.02% to 0.46%, respectively. Moreover, due to the robust, simple, and empirical method, the Probit analysis has also been done for qPCR LODs to avoid uncertainties in target recoveries. The micro-PCR is reliable, accurate, and reproducible for early detection of HIV-1 and HIV-2 viral loads simultaneously. Rapid urban population growth, the urbanization of poverty, and the proliferation of slums are being driven to a great extent by this dynamic form of globalization. Consequently, the multifaceted effects of globalization on the poor and low-income populations in the cities need to be better understood in this context, both at the individual level and within the community. Therefore, the present study was conducted to highlight the various determinants affecting the lives and enhancing the vulnerability of the dwellers of four slum settlements present in various areas of Jammu City, India. Emphasis was made to integrate biological, physical, social, and spatial facets of vulnerability to understand the complex dynamics of urban areas in developing countries. A descriptive survey design was used for questions concerning the social and environmental aspects. Social aspects including age, sex, education, religion, caste, profession, and family income that correspond to social stratification acted as baseline information, while both indoor and outdoor environments such as housing conditions, sanitation, personal habits, solid waste disposal, disaster proneness, and air and water pollution problems were taken into consideration to assess the environmental aspect. Results indicated that the slum settlement has a migratory population with permanent or temporary settlements. The status of education and skill level is poor which results in poor economic development and social well-being of the dwellers in slums. The study also identified vulnerability of the population on social and environmental front which could result into severe health issues. Introduction: Tuberculosis remains a global health problem worldwide and the risk progression of Tuberculosis to Drug Resistant Tuberculosis is influenced by various factors. These include immunocompromised status, past history of tuberculosis, life style and nutritional level. Hence, identifying the population at risk of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is essential and may help in developing appropriate case-finding strategies. Therefore, the present study was designed to study the contributing risk-factors associated with Drug resistant Tuberculosis., Materials and Methods: In this prospective observational study, we assessed 189 Pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed patients during the period of 2 years at government recognized tertiary care centers. Data was collected from all these patients checked to investigate risk factors associated with Drug resistant tuberculosis development by multivariant analysis., Results: Of the 189 participants, 36 were diagnosed with drug resistant tuberculosis and 153 with drug sensitive tuberculosis. Factors associated with drug resistant tuberculosis include low-weight (OR 8.50; p = 0.0008430991), low-BMI (p = 0.0000527166), lower economic status (OR-2.1351; p = 0.048608696) and tobacco (OR-4.5192; p = 0.0023003189) were found clinically and statistically significant in development of drug resistant tuberculosis. Binary logistic regression was performed to ascertain the effects of various statistically significant factors. Due to the workload and lack of a critical mass of trained operational researchers within their ranks, health systems and programmes may not be able to dedicate sufficient time to conducting operational research (OR). Hence, they may need the technical support of operational researchers from research/academic organisations. Additionally, there is a knowledge gap regarding implementing differentiated tuberculosis (TB) care in programme settings. In this 'how we did it' paper, we share our experience of implementing a differentiated TB care model along with an inbuilt OR component in Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India. This was a health system initiative through a collaboration of the State TB cell with the Indian Council of Medical Research institutes and the World Health Organisation country office in India. The learnings are in the form of eleven tips: four broad principles (OR on priority areas and make it a health system initiative, implement simple and holistic ideas, embed OR within routine programme settings, aim for long-term engagement), four related to strategic planning (big team of investigators, joint leadership, decentralised decision-making, working in advance) and three about implementation planning (conducting pilots, smart use of e-tools and operational research publications at frequent intervals). These may act as a guide for other Indian states, high TB burden countries that want to implement differentiated care, and for operational researchers in providing technical assistance for strengthening implementation and conducting OR in health systems and programmes (TB or other health programmes). Following these tips may increase the chances of i) an enriching engagement, ii) policy/practice change, and iii) sustainable implementation.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the leading cause of acute viral hepatitis globally, with zoonotic potential, and pigs are considered the major reservoir. To determine the seroprevalence of HEV infection in pigs reared in backyard conditions in the northeastern region of India, blood samples were collected from 400 pigs from five northeastern states (80 samples from each state) and tested for IgG antibodies against HEV using an ELISA assay. Questionnaires on farm characteristics and management practices were completed, and risk factors associated with HEV were studied using univariate and multivariate analysis. The apparent seroprevalence of HEV infection was 51% (46.1-55.9, 95% CI), with a true prevalence of 52.98% (47.22-58.75, 95% CI). The risk factors significantly associated with higher HEV seropositivity were as follows: lack of disinfection (OR 4.65), feeding swill (restaurant and bakery waste) (OR 2.55), failure to follow the all-in-all-out production system (OR 3.47), and medium holding size (OR 9.83), which refers to mixed rearing of younger and older age groups. This study demonstrates that HEV is widespread among pigs reared in northeastern India. Objectives: The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic started by affecting the older age groups with comorbidities but gradually advanced to severely affect even young adults. This study attempts to clinically evaluate critically ill young and middle-aged adults hospitalized with COVID-19 and study the association of risk factors and the markers of inflammation and coagulation with their outcome., Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study on 146 patients was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Western India. History taking, clinical examination, laboratory investigations, and chest X-rays were done for all patients, and investigations were repeated after 3 days. Treatment, including ventilation, was given according to standard guidelines., Results: Difficulty in breathing was the most common chief complaint, and the majority of patients had a normal body temperature on admission. Involvement of >2 lung zones on chest X-ray, a high neutrophil to lymphocyte (N/L) ratio, the presence of complications, raised D-dimer and serum ferritin, and invasive ventilation were all associated with higher mortality. While the presence of a single comorbidity did not affect the outcome, a combination of multiple comorbidities increased the mortality., Conclusion: The presence of multiple comorbidities and complications along with radiological abnormalities and raised D-dimer and serum ferritin are associated with critically ill COVID-19 patients and may indicate a higher risk of mortality. Administration of remdesivir has no significant influence on the outcome, but tocilizumab decreases the mortality. D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) maintains the intracellular d-serine level which modulates the activity of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor and its dysfunction has been linked to several neurodegenerative disorders. In targeted next-generation sequencing study by our group, E121K mutation in DAO was associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in patients from India. However, variations in molecular mechanisms caused by this mutation which leads to ALS have not been studied. Hence, we carried out comparative biophysical characterization and assay studies of the wildtype- and mutant E121K-DAO. We observed that the purified E121K-DAO was inactive and exhibited a lower affinity for the FAD cofactor and benzoate inhibitor. Structural studies revealed that the E121K mutant has higher beta-sheet content, melting temperature, and oligomeric states compared to the wildtype. Kinetic study of aggregation of the variants using thioflavin-T confirmed that the E121K-DAO was more prone to aggregation. Microscopic visualization showed that the aggregation proceeds through an intermediate step involving the formation of fibrillar structures in the E121K mutant. Historically, industrialization has been a catalyst for built-up expansion generated by economic growth that transforms a landscape. In India, there is a paucity of exploration into how the economic shift transforms the cityscape. Therefore, the objective of current research work was to monitor built-up growth induced by industrialization using Landsat datasets and registered industry data. The k-means clustering technique was applied for assessing land use/land cover, Shannon entropy for sprawl, and Pearson for correlation between industrial growth and built-up expansion. The results manifest exponential trend in industrialization with 102-year registered industry record along with increase in built-up density from 0.30 in 1989 to 0.69 by 2019 and in the entire Delhi; it rose from 0.16 to 0.39. Furthermore, Shannon entropy confirmed the sprawl and the strong positive correlation was found among built-up of industrial areas and built-up of Delhi and registered industries. The striking chorological change in industrial as well as city's landscape was observed co-occurring with the dynamics of economic reforms. Background: Modern response to pandemics, critical for effective public health measures, is shaped by the availability and integration of diverse epidemiological outbreak data. Tracking variants of concern (VOC) is integral to understanding the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in space and time, both at the local level and global context. This potentially generates actionable information when integrated with epidemiological outbreak data., Methods: A city-wide network of researchers, clinicians, and pathology diagnostic laboratories was formed for genome surveillance of COVID-19 in Pune, India. The genomic landscapes of 10,496 sequenced samples of SARS-CoV-2 driving peaks of infection in Pune between December-2020 to March-2022, were determined. As a modern response to the pandemic, a "band of five" outbreak data analytics approach was used. This integrated the genomic data (Band 1) of the virus through molecular phylogenetics with key outbreak data including sample collection dates and case numbers (Band 2), demographics like age and gender (Band 3-4), and geospatial mapping (Band 5)., Results: The transmission dynamics of VOCs in 10,496 sequenced samples identified B.1.617.2 (Delta) and BA(x) (Omicron formerly known as B.1.1.529) variants as drivers of the second and third peaks of infection in Pune. Spike Protein mutational profiling during pre and post-Omicron VOCs indicated differential rank ordering of high-frequency mutations in specific domains that increased the charge and binding properties of the protein. Low density Polyethylene (LDPE) in various forms has become a part of life. Its accretion due to non degradable nature is concern, endangering life on earth. Amongst various methods of LDPE disposal bioremediation is regarded as ecofriendly & widely accepted. Current investigation was an attempt to isolate potent PE degrading fungus from municipal landfill soils of Bhopal, India loaded with plastic waste.16 fungal isolates were recorded from the site; PE deteriorating fungus was screened using mineral salt agar medium amended with 3% LDPE powder as sole carbon source. The isolate Penicillium citrinum showed fast fungal colony growth in screening medium was selected for biodegradation study. P.citrinum showed 38.82 ± 1.08% weight loss of untreated LDPE pieces; to improve the degradation capacity nitric acid pretreatment was performed; biodegradation was significantly stimulated by 47.22 ± 2.04% after it's pretreatment. Laccase, lipase, esterase & manganese peroxidase activities were assayed by spectrophotometer. LDPE biodegradation was analyzed by weight loss %, change in pH during fungal growth, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) & thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR spectra showed appearance of new functional groups assigned to hydrocarbon biodegradation, confirming enzymatic role in process. Changes in FTIR spectra of LDPE samples (untreated & pretreated) before & after biodegradation & surface changes in the biodegraded LDPE (indicated from FE-SEM) confirmed depolymerization of LDPE. Further changes in thermal decomposition rates of biodegraded samples in comparison to control, validate biodegradation. This is the first report signifying high competence of P.citrinum in LDPE degradation without prior pretreatment.

This current study examines the impact of renewable energy consumption, agriculture, and globalization on carbon emissions in India over the period from 1980 to 2018. For long-run estimates, we apply Gregory-Hansen's co-integration test, bootstrap ARDL approaches, fully modified ordinary least squares, and dynamic OLS. The empirical results of long-run estimates indicate that a 1% increase in renewable energy consumption, agriculture, and economic globalization will increase carbon emissions by 0.764%, 1.675%, and 0.517%, respectively. Moreover, this study confirms the detrimental effect of these variables on carbon dioxide emissions. Economic globalization coefficients indicate that the scale effect is valid in India. To reduce TB deaths in resource-limited settings, a differentiated care strategy can be used to triage patients with high risk of severe illness (i.e., those with very severe undernutrition, respiratory insufficiency, or inability to stand without support) at diagnosis and refer them for comprehensive assessment and inpatient care. Globally, there are few examples of implementing this type of strategy in routine program settings. Beginning in April 2022, the Indian state of Tamil Nadu implemented a differentiated care strategy called Tamil Nadu- Kasanoi Erappila Thittam (TN-KET) for all adults aged 15 years and older with drug-susceptible TB notified by public facilities. Before evaluating the impact on TB deaths, we sought to understand the retention and delays in the care cascade as well as predictors of losses. During April-June 2022, 14,961 TB patients were notified and 11,599 (78%) were triaged. Of those triaged, 1,509 (13%) were at high risk of severe illness; of these, 1,128 (75%) were comprehensively assessed at a nodal inpatient care facility. Of 993 confirmed as severely ill, 909 (92%) were admitted, with 8% unfavorable admission outcomes (4% deaths). Median admission duration was 4 days. From diagnosis, the median delay in triaging and admission of severely ill patients was 1 day each. Likelihood of triaging decreased for people with extrapulmonary TB, those diagnosed in high-notification districts or teaching hospitals, and those transferred out of district. Predictors of not being comprehensively assessed included: aged 25-34 years, able to stand without support, and diagnosis at a primary or secondary-level facility. Inability to stand without support was a predictor of unfavorable admission outcomes.
